M. BLAKE NELSON AMAA Executive Vice President

Greetings, After a very busy but successful state fair run, fall is quickly approaching. I always look forward to this time of year, cooler weather, crop harvest, cattle sales and football; it doesn’t get much better than that. Interest in Maine-Anjou genetics continues to grow and I believe the fall sales will reflect this. Just watching the online sale sites, I have noticed an increased amount of High Maine and Maine Angus cattle selling. We have a tremendous product and we have to get the word out! Promoting our product is key. I believe that we have to educate the industry on what we have to offer today. Unfortunately there is still a large number of the commercial sector that think of us as a show driven breed only and we have production concerns like calving ease and longevity. I think we all have to communicate to every segment that the cattle have changed. Birthing issues have been addressed and the cattle are more moderate and versatile than they were in the past. Some may say that many breeds can provide this and that is true, but Maine-Anjou can also inject muscle, docility, efficiency and still keep frame and maturity under control. Developing your marketing program is essential to succeed in this increasingly competitive sales environment that we see today. Some things to consider and ask yourself before you get going and investing dollars: Mass vs Targeted, Personal vs NonPersonal, Quick vs Slow, One way interaction vs Two way, Cost vs Exposure? These are just a few things to get started. What are some avenues of promotion and marketing our product? I believe that OCTOBER 2021 6

there is no replacement for personal contact. In this day an age when it feels that you have to send out a text or e-mail just to let the household know that it is “dinner time”, calling a potential customer or making a farm visit can be refreshing and very effective. In agriculture most producers appreciate eye to eye conversation. This may even have more value today than it did for past generations because direct communication has decreased due to Covid and society trends. Some great opportunities to make these contacts can be at conventions, cattlemen’s meetings, the local stockyards or coffee shop just to name a few. Another great thing about personal contact is you have immediate two way interaction with the potential customer, your conversation or promotional items may prompt questions and interest. If you believe in what your MaineAnjou cattle have to offer then interact and tell people about them, there is no replacement for your own convictions and faith in what you are producing. One avenue that we often use is print advertising. Targeted magazine ads can be extremely effective, especially when trying to market to a specific audience. Consistency within a specific magazine builds brand recognition and familiarity with your program. This can not only spark interest, but also let the customer feel more acquainted with your product. The Voice and other industry magazines are great avenues to consider. Regional publications and your local newspaper can be very cost effective especially when you are marketing bulls or replacement females. Ultimately you have to honestly access your cattle and decide if they should be promoted for a local market or if they have the attributes to attract customers from a larger audience. Social Media is the hottest venue and must be seriously considered as a marketing source. The speed of communicating through social media has changed our world. Whether it is for the better or not that is for you to decide, but without a doubt it is here and for real. Utilizing social media is extremely quick, cost effective,

and can reach a large population mass. Today’s society thrives on having everything at their fingertips and cattlemen are no different. E-mail blasts are a great way to send a specific message to a targeted group, our goal is to prompt action by the customer. The AMAA offers these e-blasts services so please contact Lindsey and she will be glad to assist you. Utilizing search engines can expose a large mass of folks to your product through the use of analytics and key words. Just about every major search engine (ex. Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.) offers these services and they are typically user friendly in setting them up. The use of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be very potent and give you instant contact with a big group. This is one of the most cost effective venues to promote your cattle and it can still have a personal touch to certain generations. I would encourage you to look into this options, if you are not comfortable I bet your kids or grandkids will lend a hand. A weekly promotion of your bulls, matriarch cows, and sale cattle can all be great topics to showcase in these posts. Does it reach them? Is it credible? Does it create interest? These are some of the questions that I have heard about the use of social media, what is the answer? I don’t know, but if it increases your sales and ultimately your bottom-line it is working. Ultimately, I call on you to promote our cattle. It takes all of us to tell our story and reach both current and potential customers. The AMAA will be happy to help you with any questions on any of these topics you may have so please contact us, we are here to help you. Just a reminder, when sorting your spring born calves please consider some of the AMAA sponsored options in marketing them; the Bright Lights Sale in Oklahoma City and Power in the Pens Sale in Denver. If you have any interest or questions regarding these programs please contact myself or Josh. Best Regards, Blake MAINE-ANJOU- Vision, Vigor, Value!

MAINE-ANJOU Commercial Connection

JOSHUA CRIBBS AMAA Director of Commercial Development

Fall is here, and like most of you I am excited for weaning calves, gearing up for sale season, and looking forward to the fall run of livestock shows and production sales. Maine-Anjou cattle are a hot topic of discussion these days, and respected breeders and livestock traders across the country are joining the team. As Maine Angus cattle have grown in popularity, so have the calls for high and purebred MaineAnjou cattle to be the cornerstone of making the next generation of hybrid seedstock. We’ve had a tough summer in the Upper Midwest, Great Plains, and Western United States, with a severe lack of summer rains. All things considered, cattle sales and the fall outlook appear strong – feeder cattle sales and the futures look good as we move further into the fall run. We’ve seen MaineAnjou feeder cattle have strong showings on Superior this late summer/fall. It seems that cattle with muscle and lean growth have strong value to the feeder and the yard. For those who are fall calving, you are looking forward to a whole different part of the production cycle – seeing the decisions you made during breeding season come OCTOBER 2021 10

to fruition and beginning to think about what to use to make the next generation. I would encourage you to look to the 2021 Sire Catalog posted on the website or social media as you search for the next AI sire you might want to incorporate. As we move into a different type of busy for the year and travel begins to ramp up, it goes without saying that we look forward to visiting and looking through cattle with as many of you as we can. Walking through your herds and operations provides us with a better understanding of what is across the country and allows us to better serve the AMAA + AJMAA membership as well as those wanting to be a part of the Maine-Anjou breed. From the time I started with the Association until now, it has done nothing but grow toward a stronger breed with a following that is stable and committed. Being at the state fair open shows this summer has proven that quality Maine-Anjou genetics span across the U.S. In this issue you will see advertising for the Annual Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale in Oklahoma City and the Power in the Pens Bull Sale, to be hosted

online and in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. If you have questions or want to be a part of either of these sale offerings, please don’t hesitate to reach out and discuss the options and advantages of both. We look forward to the remainder of the fall and working with you on furthering the breed’s impact and footprint of modern Maine-Anjou cattle. It’s progressive. It’s powerful. It’s Modern Maine-Anjou!

Cattle Visions Providing the Tools of the AI Trade Think of Cattle Visions as the Amazon of the cattle genetics industry – reasonable pricing, fast delivery and a wide assortment of products – similar to the Internet giant, but with a personal touch. A distinct focus on customer service has been essential to the Cattle Visions business model, a company supplying semen and artificial insemination (AI) supplies to cattle producers from coast to coast, in all spheres of the cow-calf sector. “We want to be remembered as the best service provider in the genetics business. We’ve seen tremendous success and we appreciate that; we hope it continues,” OCTOBER 2021 16

Lance Ellsworth says. “It’s more than that, I would assume most people want to aspire to be the best in their field, however I also want Cattle Visions to be remembered as a company that helped positively impact peoples’ lives.” A Business Was Born Since Cattle Visions was founded in 2002, millions of units of semen have been shipped in and out of the facility on Highway 63 in Clark, Missouri, just north of Columbia. In the nearly 20 year history of the business, thousands of delivery trucks have been in and out of the yard and

hundreds of cattlemen and cattlewomen have attended AI schools put on by the small staff. Lance Ellsworth, co-founder and coowner of Cattle Visions, grew up in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, where he still lives today on the family farm. He was active in 4-H and FFA and showed cattle with his family. He attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he was active on the livestock judging team. Out of college, Ellsworth began his career in the cattle genetics business, first with Western Breeders Service, an AI company in Madison, Wisconsin, and later

became the general manager of SemexBeef. “It’s where I developed most of my contacts traveling throughout the country, visiting herds, researching genetics and pedigrees,” he says. That is how Ellsworth met Carl Newbrough, an AI business veteran who worked for the Genetic Horizons group in Missouri, a company under the Semex management umbrella. When Genetic Horizons closed, Newbrough decided to start a business of his own. Together, the two began a new venture, Cattle Visions. Newbrough managed the facility and a small staff in Missouri and Ellsworth handled bull procurement and marketing. Newbrough retired a few years ago and sold his shares to Jared Royer, who had worked for Cattle Visions for several years. Together Ellsworth and Royer lead a team of professionals that work together to care for the livestock housed at the facility, manage the warehouse, use safe practices around liquid nitrogen, handle the logistics of their shipping volume and keep customer service at the forefront of their thoughts and actions. Meeting of the Minds The company has grown to include more than just cattle genetics. Cattle Visions sells semen, semen certificates and AI supplies, as well as hosting AI schools, providing local arm service and synchronization, and consulting on breeding projects. In 2019 a custom collection barn/housing facility

Lance Ellsworth, co-founder/owner of Cattle Visions, Elkhorn, Wis.

was built for bulls to be kept on the property. The Cattle Visions website heading reads: Helping Beef Producers Succeed with Artificial Insemination -- “Our genetic line up and professional services will bring your cattle visions to reality.” And it’s clear that the employees at Cattle Visions are using all their tools to help cattlemen and women put their best foot forward when AI-ing their herd. When the business first started, Ellsworth would travel to Missouri every other week. Since that time, Heather Dodd works at her desk in the Cattle Visions office. his young family helping with the new bull paperwork, has grown and managing inventory, working with bull his own involvement in his family farm owners, training new employees on has changed. Now he works solely from company-wide computer programs, as his phone and laptop at home, traveling well as answering phone calls and web primarily to bull sales and tradeshows. “I inquiries. “Something that is very different used to do all the marketing, bull leasing, representative correspondence and sign up about our company is that we do not have ownership in most of our bulls like development so to speak. As we’ve grown, I’ve been able to delegate and other people some of our competitors. We help multiple producers market their bulls,” says Dodd. can help with all of that which is great,” “We distribute, not just for multiple farms, says Ellsworth. but we distribute for multiple companies One of those people is Heather Dodd, as well – Origen, Select Sires, Semex. That lead customer service representative. Dodd joined the Cattle Visions staff in 2009. helps us provide more options for our customers. We save them shipping costs Dodd’s own knowledge of AI was limited because all of this semen can ship in one when she joined the team. She had a few tank and they don’t pay anything extra to commercial cows at home but had a lot get that semen offered by other companies, to learn about the business. What she brought to the team was years of customer we offer it at the same price.” service experience. She got educated on Shipping the “lingo” as she went along and learned Getting semen to the customer requires about several new-to-her breeds of cattle – a lot of logistics, a lot of delivery drivers like the South Poll bull signed on by Cattle and a lot of semen shippers. Dodd says that Visions recently. 300 semen shippers can be in circulation Dodd’s main responsibilities revolve on any given spring day, and it’s not around customer service, everything from OCTOBER 2021 17

Semen shippers lined up at Cattle Visions. unusual for 60 – 70 tanks to go out per day at the height of the busy season (MidMarch through June 1). Packing that many tanks per day requires all hands on deck from the Cattle Visions team. “We don’t stay open any longer, because the FedEx delivery in the morning until the pick-up time in the evening is the same, so we are all just working full speed ahead during those hours,” says Dodd. “We work well together as a team, that’s the key that keeps us on top of it … everybody pitches in where needed.” The cost of shipping semen is set by FedEx and UPS. All semen is shipped in 26-pound tanks, regardless of the number of straws, and they must be returned to the Cattle Visions facility, so two-way shipping is included. Because of this set cost, there’s no minimum order requirement for semen shipments from Cattle Visions. “We’ve always heard that most cow herds East of the Mississippi have an average herd size of 13, so we’ve always catered to the customer – especially as embryo flushing has become more popular. They will only need 2 or 3 units for a flush or even 1 these days,” says Ellsworth. OCTOBER 2021 18

With the vastness of the catalog at Cattle Visions, inventory management is a big part of the job. “In our slower season, we take the time to contact owners of semen that is no longer selling so we can make room for the new stuff that’s going to come in the fall. Even if we’re not shipping semen out so fast and furious, there’s lots of work to do be done in the meantime,” Marketing Semen As part of her day to day, Dodd deals with bull owners to help market their bull’s semen. To have a bull listed on Cattle Visions, the process is straightforward. • Approval by Cattle Visions owner • Signed contract • Send a professional promotional photo of the bull and a short write-up to Cattle Visions • Ship a small amount of semen to the Cattle Visions office to have on hand • Finally the bull is added to the website and semen is listed as in stock Show cattle, purebred cattle, commercial cattle and heritage breeds, as well as maternally focused and carcass-forward cattle all have originated from semen

straws stored at and sold by Cattle Visions. Ellsworth enjoys that he gets to cater to the purebred breeders and show cattle aficionados, as they do not have as many semen options available from other larger cattle genetics companies. “Diversification has been pretty key to our success as far as having the ability to carry bulls that cover different niches of the markets. Since I grew up showing animals, the purebred sector and most specifically the show ring has been a major avenue that I’ve stressed,” says Ellsworth. “To me, it’s important that the bulls we lease are marketable towards those segments. But we’re willing to entertain anything that has some viability and can serve the greater good of the beef industry.” Maine-Anjou bulls have been carried by Cattle Visions from the start. Maine-Anjou Personally, Ellsworth showed a few Maine-Anjou steers in his youth and added that in his Genetic Horizons and Semex days, they carried Maine-Anjou semen. “When we started Cattle Visions, we put a little more emphasis on the breed because

that was an area that was really growing,” Ellsworth says. He enjoys the broadening of the breed to include the Maine Angus and commends American Maine-Anjou Association Executive Vice President Blake Nelson for really enhancing the breed’s promotability with that program. “I like the fact that they’ve become more data driven throughout the years as well,” Ellsworth says. “In general, I think the cattle have the opportunity to succeed in the future – to cater to both the show ring and the commercial man quite well by gathering premiums in the end with the carcass quality.” GOET I-80, born in 2009, is a standout in terms of semen sales. Even at twelve years old this past spring, he was still a top pick for Cattle Visions customers. “He’s proven calving ease and was used by purebred breeders and the club calf industry which has made him so popular,” says Ellsworth. Innovation Like any business, Cattle Visions tries to reward their clientele for their loyalty. In the past year or so, Dodd and Royer have developed a customer rewards program to help offset the cost of AI. “The majority of our customer base is the smaller producer and we have a lot of customers who have smaller herds, are 4-H / FFA kids, or someone just starting out in the business. We wanted to think of a way we could reward them, because they’re not going to purchase any large quantities of semen right away,” Dodd says.

The program keeps track of how many units of semen the customer buys, and every time they hit 40 straws, the customer gets free ground shipping on his or her next order. Education and Resources Part of the model at Cattle Visions includes teaching others to AI cows and providing resources to do it better, or get more cows bred. Several AI schools are put on by the company every year at the facility in Clark, Missouri. Originally advertising was required to fill two schools per year, but now Cattle Visions hosts as many as 12, two-day classes per year. All classes have limited seats to allow for lots of practice with live animals and classroom work during the sessions, and sign up is done through the Cattle Visions website. Interested parties can sign up for an email list to be notified when the dates are announced. According to Dodd, more than 1,000 people are on that list. Additionally, Cattle Visions has a team of independent sales reps located throughout the country. Nearly 300 individuals are in their data base and often have their own inventory of Cattle Visions bulls in their semen tanks. “We also have field reps across the country that we’ll try to connect our customers with so that will save on shipping costs and sometimes save them on time, or even provide someone to breed their cows for them,” says Dodd. Additionally, the owners, employees and

field reps try to attend cattle trade shows throughout the country at large livestock shows or beef expos throughout the spring. Some of these events include the National Western Stock Show in Denver, North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines and the World Beef Expo in West Allis, Wisconsin. The crew can deliver semen to the show for customers, pass out semen catalogs and visit with owners about their herd sires or new purchases. Dodd personally enjoys going to the tradeshows and meeting customers in person. It’s great to get to meet someone and put a face with a voice you’ve been hearing on the phone for the past ten years, she adds. The staff at Cattle Visions is passionate about their business. Customer service has never been sacrificed, whether the team is dealing with a blown semen straw or a lost shipper. “It’s so hard to predict from year to year, you don’t know just how busy you’re going to be. It’s interesting how we have grown, but one thing we’ve never compromised is the customer service. The customer is always number one. If our customers are not happy about something, we really do listen and meet and try to make any necessary changes,” says Dodd. Another part of customer relations is the small celebrations, the walls of the classrooms are decorated with success stories of first AI calves born from AI school graduates. Extremely good purebred animals are selling for higher and higher end value. When those animals are sired by Cattle Visions bulls, those customer victories are celebrated on social media and on bull listings in the catalog or on the website. “There’s a line in our sire directory that says, ‘We love seeing everyone’s purple banners and high sellers in their production sales’ … that has always rang true for me,” Lance Ellsworth. #####

The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950. MAPP ENROLLMENT MAPP enrollment will be open Sept. 1 - Dec. 15, 2021. Inventories must be submitted no later than Dec. 15, 2021. FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already

been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.

2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.

ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by

DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. To submit a sample through the association, please follow the DNA request instructions on our website, maine-anjou.org, under the Genetics/Testing tab. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks. MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: If you wish to obtain a Maine Angus registration select the Maine Angus box when registering online. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements, please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that AMAA staff can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine Angus it will be recoded as a MaineTainer. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have

MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show.

• A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test.

MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine- Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test.

MAINE ANGUS COLOR REQUIREMENTS: • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. • Starting Jan. 1, 2019 all animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers.

OCTOBER 2021 23

Fall DNA

Reminders Fall sale & show season is here, as well as fall calving and it is time to register those spring calves you just weaned. It is a busy time of year for everyone with many different things going on, so we have compiled a list of some important things to remember regarding DNA & testing. • NEW – All samples turned in on a hair card will be charged an additional $4 per sample starting January 1, 2022. • AMAA will accept blood cards, tissue sampling units (TSU), semen straws or hair cards. • NEW - The CC Panel price has dropped to $95 and this is the most inclusive test we offer at AMAA. With this test you will receive 100 thousand DNA markers which includes parentage as well as genomics. The panel also includes several defect tests including TH and PHA. This is the recommended choice for those wishing to improve their herd. • All bulls born after January 1, 2014 must be TH and PHA free by test or pedigree in order to register. If a bull is found to be a carrier, he can register as a foundation or performance bull only, but all progeny will have to test free of that defect in order to register. Foundation bulls will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring. • All AI sires regardless of breed and/or commercial, must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering any progeny. • All donor dams must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering their ET calves. If a donor is dead before a sample was procured, you must DNA, TH and PHA test all ET calves in order to register them. • Planning to sell a bull in either or the Bright Lights or Power in the Pens Maine-Anjou Sale? Have an AI promotional sire? Now is the time to start getting your DNA and testing in order and be ready by the first of the year! These are just a few things to take note of as the busy season sets in. If you have any questions regarding DNA or registrations please e-mail Rylee at rylee@amaapc.com or call her at 816-431-9950 Ext. 1.

OCTOBER 2021 44

Hi everyone, my name is Emma Preston. This is my second year on the board, and I was recently elected to be this years Vice President. I am a freshman at Iowa State University majoring in Agriculture Studies with an emphasis in International Ag, Food Science and Safety, and Microbiology. My favorite thing about being on the board is having the opportunity to work with the juniors and novice at the junior national. We are all super excited for the upcoming year! Kansas City is approaching quickly, and the Louisville entries are now open. Also, we are bringing back the National Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC) this spring!

This conference is March 31-April 3 in Kansas City, Mo. This conference is an excellent opportunity to meet new people and spend time with the board and other AJMAA members. We will have speakers, tours, and activities planned for a fun weekend for ages 14-21! A full schedule and registration information will be coming out soon, watch the AJMAA Facebook & Instagram pages for more information.
