Can the End of Another Year Be Near Already?

American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Mission Statement The AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior, value added performance, docility and carcass excellence for the beef industry while also providing expanded membership services for adult and junior members. The unfortunate answer to that is yes! I am sure I am not alone with the following thought but as the years pile up on one, the clock does seem to be ticking a little faster. I overheard a gentleman once say the one thing a person cannot slow down is the movement on the clock. 2014 has been a banner year in many ways for anyone in the cow/calf business. Prices being paid for feeder cattle are some like we have never seen before. The market this fall for show prospects has been incredibly active with what appears to be a record number being placed in new homes. Fall production sales of registered breeding cattle has followed the trend with average sale prices exceeding most everyone’s expectations. For some time now we in the cattle industry have realized the decline in supply, that part of the business does not appear to be changing in the foreseeable future. Some statistics that keep everyone thinking that way are: • So far in 2014 total red meat production is down 5.2%. • 2013 the cow population was as low as it has been since the 1950’s. A comparison shows that in 1975 the count was 132 million while in 2013 that number dropped to 89 million.

4

November/December 2014

• Through mid October of 2014 total livestock slaughter numbers were down with the cattle industry showing: − Cattle down 7.1% − Calves/veal down 21.7% The lower inventory numbers obviously put pressure on the demand side, evidenced by the curve in the higher priced cattle market. Specifically what has this meant to the Maine-Anjou breed? Regardless of industry trends, GOOD cattle bring GOOD prices! So yes, the Maine-Anjou breed has followed the whole industry trend with GOOD feeder cattle selling at the top of the market, show heifer prospects selling VERY well and production sales easily topping past sale averages. I am quite sure the breed sales scheduled for late fall, early winter have the potential to set some all time breed highs! As mentioned many times in this article, keep the performance genetics as well as phenotypic design in mind when making breeding, selling or buying decisions - it lends to much more longevity in one’s program!

Highlights of 2014 • Two major fundraising events for the Reaching Beyond Foundation were very successful! • 2014 National Junior Heifer Show set a record for highest number of entries! • AMAA registration count and income are on a steady incline! • Maine-Anjou sale averages run at a high pace! • Commercial Connection Program is off and running. What lies ahead in 2015? • Heritage Road inductees introduced and portraits hung at the AMAA.

• Strong possibility a new Windows based program will be in place at the AMAA. • Reaching Beyond Foundation fundraising has a new look and blueprint to meet its goals. • Best ever National Junior Heifer show in Springfield, Ill. • New destination and exciting program planned for National Youth Leadership Conference. • Commercial Connection program builds momentum. • Our 50K research project begins to show its rewards with published genomically enhanced EPDs. • New era of leadership at AMAA takes the helm.

Boddicker Announces Retirement After a long and successful tenure of leadership, John Boddicker, Executive Vice President of the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) since March of 1990 has announced he will retire on Dec. 1, 2015. “I think I speak for all Maine-Anjou owners and breeders in saying we owe a heartfelt debt of gratitude to John”, said Jirl Buck, AMAA Board President. “His dedication and contributions to the breed’s success for over 25 years has simply been amazing. He will leave the breed at an all-time level of excitement and a financially strong organization.” During Boddicker’s tenure as Executive VicePresident of the AMAA he has also led other national

organizations serving as a Director of the National Pedigreed Livestock Council and a past president of the U.S. Beef Breeds Council. He has been a constant motivator to Maine-Anjou breeders, promoter of the youth organization and willing to face challenges as they came. By announcing his retirement over a year in advance, this allows the AMAA the opportunity to not only select a successor but also allow for time together to mentor and train before Boddicker officially retires. Information on the position and selection process will be forthcoming.

Happy Holidays The American Maine-Anjou Association would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and prosperous New Year!

New EPDs − Calving Ease and Maternal Calving Ease As I write this article, the fall harvest in the midwest has been an ongoing challenge with consistent intermittent rains and mud! However, those that have had a few good days are finding yields that are beyond remarkable! Good luck and a safe harvest to all. The same can be basically said for the cattle market, unbelievable high prices! A sale report from a livestock auction market in western Iowa for the week of Oct. 6, 2014 reported the top of the sale was a set of 532 lb. replacement heifers that brought $1,928 per head and the top five weight steers brought $1,770 per head. Wow! With the cow numbers at historic lows, replacement heifers being retained at lower numbers and pasture availability very limited, the stage for a great cattle market looks like it should be good for some time to come. If you read the title of this article, you know that it is relating to the American Maine-Anjou Association’s (AMAA) new Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) EPDs. These new EPDs were developed and first introduced in 2013 in our national sire summary. The timing and release of these new EPDs was critical as a number of breeds already have these associated calving EPDs included in their profiles. Plus, calving ease issues have rapidly climbed to the top because of a major shortage of labor on ranches especially at calving time. Most producers basically want problem free cattle, cows that present a calf naturally or with very little assistance, wean a heavy calf and calves at or about

6

November/December 2014

the same time each year. Is that too much to ask for? I don’t think so. It should be expected! The CED EPD describes the heritable component of a sire’s ability to produce calves with minimal dystocia or calving difficulty when mated to heifers. It is the best selection tool to use to reduce calving difficulty. A sire with a 10 CED EPD is expected to have 6% more unassisted births than a sire with a four CED EPD. Units are in a percentage of additional unassisted births. Controlling the percentage of heifers experiencing calving difficulty (dystocia) during their first calving is a goal of many producers. Service sires bred to these heifers can have a large influence on the rate of calving difficulty. The CED EPD uses both calving ease scores for calves born to heifers and birth weights from calves born to all ages of dams to predict calving ease. Please remember, the CED EPD describes the additional percentage of calves expected to be born unassisted. The MCE EPD provides an indicator of the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve unassisted. The units of measure are the additional percentage of unassisted births. A sire with MCE EPD of six is expected to sire daughters that have 4% more unassisted births than a bull with a two MCE EPD. In comparing the numbers of the CED EPD and MCE EPD, the larger number is more desirable. The birth weight EPD number that is smaller is more desirable. Here is a comparison of MaineTainer and Maine-Anjou sires from the 2014 genetic evaluation.

From this data you can see some close similarities, but the type of EPD ranges show there are some big differences also. This is great information for both your selection of sires and for use in your sales approach. As I indicated earlier, this type of EPD information along with each animal’s complete EPD profile, is updated twice annually and printed in the AMAA Sire Summary. You can print off the sire summary from the AMAA Web site and if you haven’t done so, please study the vast amount of information that is available for you to use. You will be amazed! These CED EPDs have several key features making them extremely useful to Maine-Anjou breeders. First, the Multiple-Breed International Cattle Evaluation (MB-ICE) calving ease system is the first multibreed calving ease evaluation. Similar to the weight trait evaluation, MB-ICE system accounts for breed composition differences in dystocia and birth weight. Second, this genetic evaluation uses the genetic association between birth weight and calving ease in a multiple trait genetic model. Third, the evaluation incorporates external EPD data for sires with progeny in the MB-ICE evaluation. Please enjoy the following article, “Use Calving Ease Scores to Monitor and Reduce Dystocia” by Bob Weaber, Ph.D., PAS, Cow-calf Extension Specialist, Kansas State University. Thank you, Mr. Weaber, for allowing us to reprint this article.

Use Calving Ease Scores to Monitor and Reduce Dystocia

by Bob Weaber, Ph.D., PAS Cow-calf Extension Specialist, Kansas State University The old management adage “If you don’t measure it, you can’t improve it!” holds true for many beef

production traits. It is especially true for dystocia or calving difficulty. It is important for producers to review their current data collection scheme and the data they use in selection of bulls to remedy problems in their herd. Many producers still collect birth weights of calves as part of their performance record collection system. Producers are encouraged to transition to collection of calving ease scores instead of or in addition to birth weights. Birth weight only accounts for 55-60% of the genetic variation in calving ease. So, selection for reduced birth weight alone won’t improve calving ease as much as selecting directly on calving ease. And since birth weight is strongly correlated with other growth traits, reduction in birth weight is usually associated with decreased growth performance at weaning and yearling. When selecting a Maine-Anjou service sire for use on virgin heifers, it is recommended to focus on selection of Maine-Anjou influence bulls with CED EPDs of 10.7 or greater. If you are using artificial insemination, select bulls with high accuracy CED EPDs to further minimize risk of dystocia events. For cow-calf producers, calving ease is the economically relevant trait associated with dystocia. Economically relevant traits (ERTs) are those that directly generate revenue or incur costs in beef production systems. In the case of a commercial cow-calf producer, dystocia (or lack of ‘calving ease’) is what generates costs in a cow herd through direct losses of calves and their dams, increased labor costs, and certainly lower reproductive rates among cows that have experienced dystocia. Birth weight is an indicator trait. In this case, birth weight provides some information on calving ease. Birth weight alone doesn’t directly generate revenue or incur costs independent of calving ease. It’s important to recognize that there is an optimal range of birth weights in beef cattle. Certainly, too heavy of a calf is a problem during delivery of the calf hence our selection, at least historically, for lower birth weights. However, too small of a calf at birth is problematic as well. This is especially true for winter/spring calving herds. During severe cold stress, low body weight calves are more susceptible to hypothermia

November/December 2014

CommerCial ConneCtion

and subsequent death or disease issues. Indeed, very low birth weight calves in northern latitudes can dramatically reduce survivability for calves born in winter months. Recording calving ease scores is easy and should be done at or shortly after birth. The Beef Improvement Federation recommended calving ease scores are listed below and in the front of the NCBA IRM red books. Monitoring calving ease in heifers and cows will allow producers to select sires with optimal calving ease and moderate levels of birth weight; helping to minimize dystocia. The calving ease records may also allow identification of sires that are causing problems. Sire selection for improved calving ease should focus on Calving Ease EPD, and for sires of replacement females, Calving Ease Maternal EPD should be considered. Calving Ease Maternal describes the genetics associated with the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve without assistance. Calving Ease Score

The Cost of Registrations and Transfers

by Ed Creason

What is the cost to register and transfer an animal? Registrations and transfers are an important part of the registered cattle industry. Taking care of these in a timely fashion can be beneficial and even save the producer money. We are going to look at an example of a herd of 50 cows and a herd of 100 cows and the effect on timing of registrations and transfers in Maine-Anjou Performance Program (MAPP) or Breeder's Choice (BC). In Table 1 we have listed options for registrations and transfers. Ideally, we would like to get cattle registered and transferred as soon as possible. Registering and transferring animals promptly can benefit you in several ways, it can save you money, time down the road (doing everything at once and not having to hunt for information at a later date) and it gets the data reported sooner on the sires and dams in the breed making their data more accurate. In Table 2 we have listed the cost of registrations and transfers for a 50 head cow herd. When we look at registrations, being enrolled in MAPP can save you $10 per head, this can add up with the more cattle you register. If you purchase a block of 50 registrations for the year, you will receive a 20% discount on 12 November/December 2014

registrations, a good deal for you! What is the cost of waiting to register your calves? If you wait until they are over 13 months of age it will cost another $1,250 to register them. If you wait until they are over 24 months of age it will cost you $3,750 more than it would if you registered them before they were 13 months of age. What is the cost of waiting to transfer your cattle? We are figuring that you will transfer 40% of your cattle a year and if you wait to transfer them until after 60 days of sale it will cost you an additional $300. Let’s look at the very best deal you can get for your registrations and transfers on 50 cows versus what wouldn’t be ideal. If you are enrolled in MAPP and buy a block of 50 registrations ($1,000) and transfer all of your cattle within 60 days of sale, ($300) it will cost you $1,300 for the year. If you are enrolled in Breeders Choice and register your calves between 13 and 24 months of age ($3,000) and transfer your cattle after the 60 days of sale ($600) it will cost you $3,600 for the year. The worst case scenario of waiting will cost you $6,100 for the year. Plus, you can get an extra 10% off your registration work if you do it online (only one discount is honored)! We haven’t looked at every possible scenario, but you can see the differences

registrations for the year you BC MAPP Difference receive a 30% $35 $25 $10 discount on registrations, $60 $50 $10 again, a good $110 $100 $10 deal for you! What is the $15 $15 $0 cost of waiting to register $30 $30 $0 your calves? If you wait until $465 $330 $135 they are over $743.75 $531.25 $212.50 13 months of age it will cost $1,400 $1,000 $400 $1,968.75 $1,406.25 $562.50 another $2,500 to register $2,450 $1,750 $700 them. The worst case scenario, waiting will cost you $12,200 for the year. Again, you can get an extra 10% off your registration work if you do it online (only one discount is honored)! We have not looked at every possible scenario, but you can see the differences in the programs and what time can cost you. What happens if you sell an animal and the buyer says that they don’t want you to transfer it or they don’t care if you transfer it? Do you transfer it anyway? You absolutely go ahead and transfer the animal because now is the best time to do the transfer.

You have to figure out what your time would cost you. If you wait to register and transfer the animal, it could cost you at least $80 more than it would have if you would have registered and transferred the animal at the best rates. These scenarios should help you figure out what works best for your operation and you. There are a few ways that you can benefit from getting your registration and transfer work in to the office in a timely fashion. Remember what the cost of waiting can be!

Fall = Fun

by Bevan Holmgren The smells of fall are in the air; smoke rising from fall fires, freshly harvested corn fills the air and the smell of Revive on my new show heifer in the barn has me looking forward to the fall shows. This will be my first American Royal and I couldn’t be more excited. The North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Maine-Anjou junior show is Saturday, November 15 and the junior MaineTainer show is Sunday, November 16. Showing on the green shavings in Freedom Hall is such an amazing experience. The country store at NAILE is a great place to get an early start on Christmas shopping for all of the showmen in your life. January brings the opportunity to head to Denver for the National Western Stock Show. It is the super bowl of cattle shows. Mountains, trains, a big trade show and some of the best cattle in the world make for an awesome time! The Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale is an excellent opportunity to sell and to purchase outstanding Maine-Anjou genetics. The cat walk in the yards is stunning at sunrise and makes for a wonderful view on show day. I can’t wait to see everyone during our fall show run! Don’t forget, we are hosting an online auction on Dec. 11, 2014. Contact a junior board member or Devon for more information on the sale or to donate an item. All proceeds will benefit the 2015 National Junior Show in Springfield, Ill., June 20-25.

Important onlIne regIstratIon InformatIon

Due to changes with our online registration login, current members using this service will have to create an online account. Here are the steps: • Type in your breeder number and password as you normally would. • You will be prompted to enter an e-mail address. • Enter a valid e-mail address and your normal password (you do not need to change your password). This information will be updated to your account and you may login as you normally would from that point on. Note: Online registrations are not automatically registered. They’re completed in the order they’re received.

Busy season Is fast approachIng

To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season, please follow the tips below: Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering owns the dam with exception of ET calves. If ET, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH typed and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at maine@kc.rr.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. Rush work is processed ahead of regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail so please do not procrastinate to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers that they are purchasing from a reputable business person. As always, we appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.

RegistRations foR upcoming shows

It is now time to register show animals for winter shows. Please keep in mind during the winter show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.

Rush oRDeRs

If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 as of Dec. 31, 2013 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it will be considered a rush unless otherwise specified. It is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no sameday turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WILL NOT deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. If a paper is needed within two weeks, a rush will be required at this time of year. Thank you.

ANNOUNcEMENTS

REGISTRATION NUMBERS

Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site, maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed by clicking on “Search the Maine-Anjou Breed” or by logging into your account.

dNA, Th ANd phA REqUIREMENTS

Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, so please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new selfbilling sheet for foundation fees.

BUll cAlf REGISTRATION

If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three weeks.

ONlINE TRANSfERS

Please dispose of any old self-billing worksheets and registration forms you may have to avoid work being held for price differences.

Registered animals with certificates are now able to be transferred online but must be completed by the current owner by logging into his/her online account to complete the transfer. If the buyer is responsible for the transfer fees, the seller must indicate this in the comment line, otherwise the seller will be charged the transfer fees. Remember, anytime you transfer an animal your dues must be paid unless the animal being transferred is the last animal in your inventory. You will be able to see your current inventory when logging in to your account online.
