he idea that there are predictable patterns in the inheritance of DNA that help inform what a phenotype will be, go as far back as 1863, with Gregor Mendel and his well-known pea experiments. He learned, through years of experimenting, that there was a predictable relationship between the pea shape of two “parent” plants, and that of their “offspring”. These Basic Laws of Inheritance are the same philosophy applied to simply inherited traits such as coat color and polled status in cattle. However, as technology and research progressed, Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance transformed into the study of animal breeding, along with many others. One of the simplest equations an Animal Breeder learns in is P = G + E. In simpler terms, an animal’s phenotype, or what we visibly see, is a combination of their genotype, or genetic potential, and the environment in which they are raised. That equation is the basis for a majority of the work that geneticists do today. Understanding that the environment and management practices of an animal may vary based on geography, nutrition

and many other circumstances, animal breeders focus on using their training to estimate the genetic potential, or breeding value, of an animal to help cattlemen better predict their phenotypic performance. To do that, they calculate EPDs, or expected progeny differences. Just like Mendel’s idea of inheritance of simple traits, the same overall concept is applied with more complicated traits such as carcass weight and calving ease. For quite some time, genetic evaluations have been used to characterize the genetic potential of registered cattle to ensure the correct animals are being selected and propagated for key economically relevant traits. To do this, seedstock producers invest heavily into reporting the key pieces of information that go into calculating an EPD – including individual animal pedigrees, recording phenotypes for key traits on that animal themselves, and then any phenotypes reported on the progeny of that animal. The overall outcome being, if you know the EPD or genetic potential of a sire and dam, you can then use that as a proxy for how their offspring will perform, on CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

average. When an EPD is reported back to the seedstock producer, the true estimate of genetic merit in an animal is summarized in three different ways: 1) Expected Progeny Difference (EPD): This is the estimate of genetic merit that an animal will pass on to their offspring and is normally the first number listed following the trait abbreviation. They can be used to rank animals according to their potential to make genetic change within a herd, or when making bull buying decisions. For example, if within a bull sale catalog, you are comparing a bull whose weaning weight EPD is +53 to another whose EPD is +63, one would expect the second bull’s progeny to weigh 10 lbs more on average than the first. Therefore, if the second bull is purchased and sires 30 progeny in a season, that is 300 extra pounds of weaning weight expected from the second animal as compared to the first. 2) Accuracy: This value ranges from 0 to 1 and is as an estimate of the confidence that the EPD provided

is in fact the ‘true’ EPD of the animal. genetic potential on an animal given the information provided to the evaluation at that time. As more progeny records and phenotypes on an animal are reported, geneticists inherently know more about that animal. This results in the EPD fluctuating up and down over time. 3) Percentile Rank: Normally the last, or bottom value, a percentile rank reports where the specific EPD for that animal ranks across the entire breed. Ranging from 1 to 100, if an animal is in the top 1%, they are one of the best animals in the database for that trait of interest. While sometimes useful to gain bearings as to what a “good” or “bad” EPD looks like, it is recommended that seedstock producers use the EPD when making selection and bull buying decisions. So how did we transition from EPDs to GE-EPDs? Due to basic biology, officially termed Mendelian sampling, there are over one quintillion possible combinations of DNA that full sibling calves can inherit, no matter the sire. Traditionally it has taken several years of recording phenotypes of progeny

to characterize which calves inherited the “good” genes from their parents. Genomic testing is a tool to characterize what specific genetic merit an animal inherited at a younger age than has been feasible from pedigree information and progeny records alone. The use of genomics, or DNA, in genetic evaluations has been happening for about a decade, providing “Genomic Enhancement” to the EPDs producers were already accustomed to. Experience has shown the addition of genomic information to an existing pedigree based evaluation has several impacts: 1) It increases the accuracy of the EPD. This provides more confidence in a bull’s performance, and a decrease in the likelihood that the EPD will drastically shift over time. 2) It decreases the generation interval. Genomically testing an animal provides as much information to a genetic evaluation as if they had already sired from 8 to 33 calves, depending on the trait. This provides the ability to make decisions faster, decreasing the generation interval. 3) It allows for more accurate CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

evaluation of traits that are hard to measure, or are measured later in life like carcass traits, stayability, and heifer pregnancy. Selling bulls with genomically enhanced EPDs is a standard practice to ensure that when a young bull is sold to a commercial rancher, he will perform as expected. Genomic testing increases the confidence a seedstock producer has in the bulls they are selling, as well as the confidence the commercial customer has in their purchase. For the future, the path to having dramatically improved offerings of bulls requires the addition of genomic testing, today. The increased accuracy from genomic testing leads to improved selection of animals that meet an operation’s breeding objectives. This ultimately leads to an improved overall quality of your bull offering and alignment with the needs of your customer base.

ach year, about this time, youngsters involved in every seedstock breed’s junior program begin to make decisions about which of their projects to enter in the respective national junior shows. Many states work for years in advance to raise money, find venues and submit proposals to host a national junior show. Even states with fewer junior members are no less enthusiastic about competing to showcase their state’s commitment to the beef industry and the youth that will one day be making decisions. To say these annual national events are a big deal is an understatement. In 2019, the AIJCA national event featured 623 head of cattle, 296 juniors and 312 adults. Even last year, during the pandemic challenges we faced, 372 youth, accompanied by 325

based protein competition and the global food supply are incredibly complicated issues. The science gets lost in political debates and misinformation that simply lack any foundation in reality. These are life changing issues that cannot be addressed without the fundamental understanding the role animals and agriculture serve in public health, the environment, the economy and the sustainability of affordably converting cellulose (grass) to protein. It isn’t unreasonable to think these challenges will be addressed by youngsters that got their first opportunity to see the bigger picture at a junior cattle event or their 4-H or FFA projects. The AIJCA “Southern Tradition” provides at least six scholarship opportunities for the contestants. The American-International Junior Charolais Foundation (AIJCF) is another critical opportunity

The AIJCA youth events are among the largest junior shows in America. Participation at the national junior show has been one of the most wholesome family activities looked forward to each year by every member of the family. This year, Perry, Georgia, has been selected to host the 2021 AIJCA Junior National. From June 19, when cattle check-in begins until Saturday, June 26, when cattle and kids begin to return home, the 2021 “Southern Tradition” schedule is jam-packed with cattle shows, academic, public speaking, cooking and just-forfun contests. In fact, kids can compete in at least 13 contests, as individuals and as team members, in addition to the cattle show. Over the years, we’ve discussed the importance of junior events. For anyone raised in agriculture or more specifically, the beef business, the benefits are obvious. Possibly an even more important benefit is to the youngster that isn’t being raised on a farm or ranch but has the chance to participate through a 4-H or FFA project. Today, approximately 14% of the U.S. population lives across 72% of the nation’s land area. In other words, there are 331 million people in the United States and only 46 million live in rural America. Although the rural exodus has slowed the past couple of years, the majority of the population loss has been felt through the center of the country where agriculture is a state’s huge economic driver. The issues of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, plant-

for financial support. Last year, more than $48,000 in scholarships were awarded through AIJCA. The American Charolais Foundation also contributes through fundraising efforts earmarked for youth and professional scholarships. On the surface, the “Southern Tradition” in Perry, Georgia, gives fellow Georgians the opportunity to showcase their state in its Sunday clothes while hosting Charolais families from across the country. No doubt the majority of livestock production is focused on developing the science and technology to make cattle better, improve the marketing infrastructure and trying to plan for the next catastrophic event like a hurricane, blizzard, flood or pandemic. The bigger picture, however, is that we are challenged to make the most of the time that we have to influence or mentor a young person that will become a decision maker in the future. The AIJCA youth events are among the largest junior shows in America. We simply can’t underestimate the short window of time we have to channel a kid’s curiosity and make certain they understand the value and importance of the contributions made across the entire agriculture spectrum. If you have any doubt about the significance of the AIJCA national events, join us in Perry, Georgia, June 20-25.

iving back to an organization that has played an important role in their lives, Larry and Robbie Lehman have been strong supporters of AICA events and activities - a dedication that ignited when Charolais cattle swooned their way into the heart of their family ranch in Tioga, Texas. After Larry’s 25-year career in telecommunications, the Lehmans entered a new chapter in life when moving their family from St. Louis to Texas in the mid90s. The Lehmans, both natives of Texas, quickly jumped into building the Lehman Charolais herd with the purchase of two show heifers for daughters, Lori and Laci in 1994. The herd grew to over a 100 head by 1997 and a Junior National Champion female was exhibited in 1998. With a herd of more than 300 head, Lehman Charolais had one of the top five Charolais female sales in the country every year from 2003 until 2011. They were named AICA Seedstock Producer of the Year in 2009. In 20  

2010, they served as a host for the Charolais World Congress sponsoring a junior heifer show allowing interaction between junior members and Charolais breeders from around the world. Committed to family life and Charolais cattle, the Lehmans fervently believe junior activities are the future of the Charolais breed and have created a living legacy by the work they have put into supporting junior members. No strangers to AIJCA events, the Lehmans were actively involved in the 2000, 2007 and 2013 AIJCA Junior Nationals. Larry has served as chairman of the American-International Junior Charolais Foundation since 2000. The Foundation oversees the investment of endowment funds that make it possible for the organization to annually award over $40,000 in scholarships to deserving AIJCA members. Larry also has chaired the AICA’s Junior Council since 1999, which supports the junior organization and promotes leadership CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

and interaction among its members. Robbie has served four years as both an advisor to the Texas Junior Charolais Association and as a member of the AICA Junior Council. She was also a member of the first AIJCA Advisory Council and received the first AIJCA Junior Advisor of the Year award in 2001. Larry and Robbie were recognized as AIJCA Junior National Conference Honorees in 2004 and AIJCA Junior National Show Dedicatees in 2008. Helping to ensure continued success of both the AICA and AIJCA, Larry served as AICA President in 2013-2014. He also served as Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee for many years. Together the Lehmans continue to see a bright future for the AICA and those who choose to support and be active in its events. They stand strong behind an organization that has embellished the livelihood of their family with continuing friendships and indepth learning experiences.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 14, 2021

For further information contact: Chairman, Executive Search Committee (314) 378-3255 NATIONAL SEARCH BEGINS AFTER J. NEIL ORTH ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT After more than two decades of serving as the executive vice president of the American International Charolais Association (AICA), J. Neil Orth has recently announced his retirement. Before taking the helm at AICA, Orth spent more than 30 years as director of field services for the Drovers Journal and executive vice president of the International Brangus Breeders Association. Throughout Orth’s career, he has been an ardent supporter of young people through his work serving on many livestock show boards and committees and breed association junior programs. However, his most important contribution is through his mentoring of young men and women that have gone on to become outstanding career beef industry professionals. As a breed executive, Neil’s ability to work across all demographics, both domestically and internationally, earned respect among his peers and a greater understanding of the complexities of beef production in America. His ability to encourage committees and boards to accept the incumbent fiduciary responsibilities resulted in sound financial positions. Under his leadership, AICA invested in technology upgrades and the implementation of programs that lead to its growth as one of the largest beef cattle breed associations in America. In notifying the AICA board of his retirement, Orth said, “This breed has value throughout the beef industry after nearly a century of proven contributions toward quality. The financial commitments that have been made to technology improvements make our ability to service the membership a near real-time experience. In other words, I am confident in the position we are in and feel this is the right time for me to step away.” A national search for the executive vice president position will begin immediately. Industry professionals with proven leadership skills can apply to AICA.EVP.Search@kreagermitchell.com. ###

Eugene W. Meyer, Sr. 81, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2020. He was born on July 4, 1939 in Fergus Fall, Minnesota, to the late Walter H. and Irene (Rossow) Meyer. He moved to southwest Missouri in 1953. He was a 1958 graduate of Neosho High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and served his country until June of 1964. Coming home from the service he returned to Sarcoxie, Missouri to reside on the family farm. On December 22, 1962 he was united in marriage to Mary Sue Guy. Together they shared fifty-eight years. Gene was employed with Tamko Roofing for thirty-three years, and was also engaged in full time farming. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sarcoxie. His greatest joy was spending time at his grandchildren’s activities. Gene is survived by his wife, Mary; four children, Cammie Nagel (Larry), of Reeds, Eugene Meyer, Jr. (Lori), of Sarcoxie, Mishell Hoover, of Carthage and Leann McCallister (Mike), of Monett; eleven grandchildren, Brandon Clemons (Bailie), Ana McConnell, Kyle McCallister (Kaitlyn), Matthew Meyer (Hailey), Kelli McCallister, Elisha Meyer, Kassie McCallister, Emily Meyer, Caden Hoover, Karlee McCallister and Jalynn Hoover; great-grandchildren, Knox Clemons, Chad McConnell, Lucas Meyer, and was so looking forward to welcoming Archer Clemons to the family; three sisters and one brother; as well as a host of other family and friends. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, Missouri. Obituary

Devona L. Sever, 61, of Kearney died Monday, March 15, 2021, at her home. Devona married Lamont “Monty” Sever on May 30, 1980. They resided on the Sever Ranch south of Dupree raising registered Charolais cattle. The family moved to Eustis in May 1993. While living in Eustis, Devona worked at Nebraska State Bank in Cozad and then as the business manager at Eustis-Farnam Public Schools. In 2005, Devona and Monty moved to Kearney where Devona worked at Platte Valley State Bank and Bruning Bank. Devona took great pride in her career and was noted as an exceptional team player by her colleagues. Devona was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her children and her “little angels,” as she called her grandchildren, made her very proud in all their accomplishments. Devona’s notoriously tidy and welcoming home was full of cherished treasures made especially for her by her loved ones. In her free time, she delighted in hearing and telling jokes, playing cards and Words With Friends, reading, crocheting and spending time with family and friends. She was selfless, loving, strong and kind. When it came to her 28  

family, she gave it all. Devona was beautiful inside and out. She poured out love, demonstrated incredible strength and was an inspiration to all. In November 2019, Devona was diagnosed with ALS and braved the progression of this disease with grace and dignity until she passed away on March 15, 2021. Obituary

Richard Zeisler, 77 of Butte, Nebraska, died Thursday, April 1, 2021, at his residence. Richard Lee Zeisler, son of Herman and Florence (Ludemann) Zeisler, was born on October 15, 1943, in Lynch, Nebraska. He attended District 49 his grade school years west of Butte, Nebraska. Richard then attended and graduated from Butte Public School in 1961. He entered National Guard basic training in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. On August 30, 1975, Richard married Sheryl Mathers at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Naper, Nebraska. They made their home on the family farm west of Butte, where they raised their five children: Jesse, Mark, Jonathan, Sarah, and Luke. Faith was of utmost importance to Richard. He was a devout lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Naper, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a passionate Sunday School teacher for over forty years. Richard was also a member of American Legion Post 51 and American Legion Riders. Richard spent his life farming and ranching. He taught his family the value of hard work and a job well done as he operated a dairy and raised a registered Charolais herd. He enjoyed visiting with friends, many which he would meet along the way when on a Harley ride. Many miles were traveled, and special memories made as family rode along with him on the Harley. Richard loved to spend time with all of his grandchildren, sharing his wisdom, and watching them grow. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Florence; and in-laws, Emery and Berniece Mathers. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Sheryl; children, Jesse (Kimberly) of Naper, Mark (Tiffany) of Spencer, Jonathan (Ashley) of Bonesteel, SD, Sarah (Kris) Thayer of Logan, IA, and Luke (Chaney) of Naper; 13 grandchildren, Natasha, Ethan, and Savannah Zeisler, Jory, Jaylon, Daydra, and Elly Zeisler, Avery, Taylor, and Jordyn Zeisler, and Landon, Noah, and Caleb Thayer; brother, Ralph (Linda) Zeisler; brothers-in-law, Leonard Mathers, Tom (Colleen) Mathers, Patrick (Carol Ann) Mathers, and Don Mathers; sisters-in-law, Helen (Robert) Nichols, Charlotte Dague, Kay (Kenny) Reiman, Sharon (Harold) Reiser, and Marge (Gary) Nolan; and many nieces and nephews.
