MAINE-ANJOU Headquarters

M. BLAKE NELSON AMAA Executive Vice President

Greetings, I hope that your spring is off to a good start and the arctic blast that fell upon our nation in mid-February is behind you. Bull sales and shows are in full swing and I know many of you are keeping busy with spring calving. The Cattlemen’s Congress turned out to be a great event for Maine-Anjou with the largest number of head shown in over a decade. The Bright Lights sale was as strong top to bottom as it has been in recent years and the Maine Exchange sale set a new record. The interest at the sales the last few months has been very strong. Some of the sales that I have attended in South Dakota, Iowa and Oklahoma have all been consistent with the offerings and sellers being rewarded. At these sales we are seeing some new faces and also some former breeders that are circling back to see what the Modern Maine-Anjou has to offer. As no surprise, you see that the animal’s quality and presentation are at the top of the list for most buyers and then we see pedigree, performance and data come to play into the market value of that animal for that day. This is a topic that is forever debatable, but Josh and I have spent much time studying and debating on what cattlemen are interested when buying Maine-Anjou genetics. To no surprise we see phenotype as the first sort for most, then we see the MARCH/APRIL 2021

8

paperwork come into play. We know that Maine-Anjou can quickly enhance the physical attributes of an animal more than any breed, but in order to get as much value for our seedstock as we can we have to supply the predictability and facts that will enhance their performance no matter what our customer desires. You often see Josh and I begging for data to be turned in on your herds so that we can build better genetic predictors through Epds. We feel like the current genetics within our breed are as good as any breed when it comes to maximizing the cattle’s appearance, but as a breed, we need to strengthen our data to appeal to a wider variety of cattlemen and increase the value of our product. Look at this from a marketing aspect, it is not any different than you going to buy a new one ton dually and you know the base model will probably get the job done or you can get the King Ranch package that supplies convenience, comfort and performance enhancements that you are willing to pay the extra for. In the seedstock cattle business that is the base model (phenotype) and the enhanced package (High accuracy DNA Epds, large amounts of data collected on offspring, outstanding individual weights and scan data etc). I guess where I am going with this is that all of us need to put ourselves in the customer’s shoes. If we are the consumer

how can we get at the best value? Cattlemen are no different and they also do not mind paying extra for their wants. You, the MaineAnjou breeders, have done a great job of improving the physical attributes of the breed and you have created market value. Now, let’s keep a common sense approach and take the next step to increase the price ceiling for our animals. To this point this year has proven that Maine-Anjou is back in the conversation within the industry, now we must all do our part to deliver the goods and show them why they should be utilizing Maine-Anjou in their programs. The new genetic evaluation has been completed by AGI and the new Epds have been updated on Digital Beef for your animals, please check them out and let us know if you have any questions. As always if we can assist you in anyway, please let us know. Thank you for a great year at AMAA and we hope to see you down the road! Take care, Blake MAINE-ANJOU - Vision, Vigor, Value!

MAINE-ANJOU Commercial Connection

JOSHUA CRIBBS AMAA Director of Commercial Development

The start of the year brought about a few changes, and it all started with a tremendous sale in Oklahoma City. In this issue, you will find a sale report from the 2021 Bright Lights Sale. In my time with the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA), this was the strongest and most active sale I have witnessed to date. You’ll also find overwhelming growth and excitement for the Maine-Anjou breed throughout the pages of this issue. We have had many new potential AI sires surface over the last year. Interest is growing for the Maine Angus program, too. We continue to see growth in numbers and questions regarding the program from Angus breeders. It’s certainly a testament to the breeders we have within our registry and their actions to be proactive and aggressive in growing the Modern Maine-Anjou brand. MARCH/APRIL 2021

10

As always it seems that High Maines and Purebreds are capturing premiums. Without a doubt, being able to inject that first generation of hybrid vigor is of strong value to the customer base. It seems as we move toward finishing off the bull selling season the interest has been strong for Maine-Anjou cattle and genetics. The question can arise as to what we do next and how are we to further our breed for those who want to be a part of it. As breeders and cattlemen, I believe it’s our obligation to always be aware of those things going on around us; breeding philosophy, cattle trends (both commercially and in the showring), and being aware of what breeders within the Maine-Anjou breed are trying to accomplish. I always look forward to traveling the country and visiting breeders and their

operations. Having a feel of what is out there for genetics and cattle is vital for me to do my job effectively. Spending time with bull customers and commercial cattlemen only strengthens our supply chain and builds upon the brand that you all work so hard to create. We look forward to the rest of the Spring, as well as moving into the Summer as we work our way toward Junior Nationals and summer visits.

Hey there AMAA and AJMAA! I am Cameron Luedtke and I am currently serving as one of your Region 3 American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) Directors. I am Originally from Midlothian, Texas, and I currently attend South Plains College in Levelland, Texas as a first-year student. My favorite part about serving on the AJMAA board is interacting with our novice program and seeing the future of our breed get excited to be involved, just like I did at a young age. Another update, we will be having our online sale this year! This will take place on March 25 on SC Online Sales and we will keep you up to date with all the information. We have gathered a lot of really

great lots and look forward to presenting them to you! We are very excited to “Let the Good Times Roll” in Chickasha, Okla., this summer! We are on schedule for June 19-24 and have a week packed full of fun planned for everyone. On our website we have lots of information posted about the week including hotel and camping information, our tentative schedule, ways to get involved, our trade show, and more and we will be updating accordingly throughout the months. Covid-19 has had everyone on their toes about all the stock shows and we hope and plan to have as “normal” as possible Junior National in Oklahoma this summer and we can’t wait to see all of y’all there in June!

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Paige at paige@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.

REGISTRATIONS: Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets. The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for

registration work that is completed through Digital Beef. The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950. MAPP ENROLLMENT Anyone in the MAPP program that did not return their inventories by the deadline should have received

an invoice. The AMAA gave several notices before billing, thus no invoices will be amended. Nonpaying members will be removed from MAPP if not paid within 60 days of the invoice date. Once removed, the member may re-enter the MAPP program by paying the current year MAPP, dues and a $50 reactivation fee. FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.

way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.

ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that

DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file.

If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. To submit a sample through the association, please follow the DNA request instructions on our website, maine-anjou.org, under the Genetics/Testing tab. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered.

Instead the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks. MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: If you wish to obtain a Maine Angus registration select the MA/ Angus box when registering online. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements, please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that AMAA staff can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine Angus it will be recoded as a MaineTainer. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show. MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine- Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA,

OTHER AMAA UPDATES: Please make sure to update any change in address, phone numbers or e-mails with the AMAA by e-mailing us at maine@amaapc. com, or by logging into your online account. ESSENTIAL BUSINESS is a bull that will generate high income potential as an AI sire. This animal is massive in design, yet when set in motion is as fluid as you can make one. He is incredible in the angles of his shoulder, knee, pasterns and hock. You can find sound ones, and you can find big boned, powerful ones, but to ask one individual to possess both traits puts ESSENTIAL BUSINESS in a league of his own.
