The Value of Genomic Testing

One factor to consider during selection

“Bull selection is one of the most important management decisions a producer can make. Bulls are assessed phenotypically (appearance), genotypically (their genetic potential), and on their individual performance (feed efficiency, carcass ultrasound, etc.). Selection criteria may vary depending on individual operation goals or planned matings. The first step of a bull purchase should be to identify herd goals and determine if those traits can be improved through genetics. Bulls have a tremendous impact on the genetics of a cow herd, and according to Iowa State University Extension, the returns on investment between good and below-average sires for traits of interest can be 15% or greater. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) provide an estimation of the genetic potential of an animal as a parent” (Lewis and Becker, 2020).

Too often seedstock producers and bull buyers get caught up in the actual weights, ultrasound data, etc., when selecting sires. EPDs provide a measure by which animals within a breed can be compared to one another for their genetic potential as parents for specific traits. EPDs incorporate multiple sources of information, including full pedigree, an animal’s own record, and progeny information. As additional sources of information become available, the accuracy of the EPD value increases” (Spangler, 2011).

“Expected Progeny Differences represent the genetic component of an animal’s phenotype that is expected to be passed on to the next generation. Studies have shown that using EPDs are seven to nine times more effective than selecting based on actual phenotypes. While most producers think of increasing the economic efficiency of their operation by changing management systems (i.e., grazing schemes, calving dates, etc.) or utilizing different nutritional programs, the importance of correct genetic selection is all too often overlooked. If selection is based on nongenetic factors, as is the case when selecting on actual or adjusted measurements instead of EPDs or economic indexes, then an inefficiency is automatically built into the cow/ calf enterprise. It is critical to understand how to interpret EPDs,

“A bull’s EPDs are enhanced over time as more performance data is collected, particularly data on a sire’s progeny. Accuracy is a measure of confidence in an EPD. Cattle with genomicallyenhanced EPDs have a greater EPD accuracy. For example, a genomic-enhanced Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD is of similar accuracy to a CED EPD after that animal has recorded 28 progeny. Genomically enhanced EPDs provide a better prediction of an animal’s future merit compared to nongenomically-enhanced EPDs. Bulls with genomically-enhanced EPDs are not necessarily superior to bulls with EPDs that have not been genomically enhanced, but their EPDs are more accurate” (Lewis and Becker, 2020). “Genomic-enhanced EPDs are to be used in the exact same way other EPDs are used, as a comparison between animals. These EPDs include all available records, including ultrasound, carcass, and genomic profile results. As data is added to an animal’s record, the EPD is expected to change to reflect the animal’s true genetic merit. Accuracy values associated with the EPD are the best indicator of the possible amount of change expected in the EPD and will increase as more information is added” (Northcut, 2010).

“There are many factors to consider when purchasing a breeding bull. Utilizing GE-EPDs along with other available selection tools and visual analysis is extremely valuable in this important economic decision-making process”. In addition to considering a bull’s EPDs, performance measurements, and pedigree, a bull should be thoroughly evaluated for visual traits such as structural soundness, foot shape, testicle shape, muscling, rib shape, and disposition. AmericanInternational Charolais Association

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

Female Enrollments

Female enrollments for 2023 are open January 1, 2023. Regardless of the program you choose, your active females should be enrolled. There are 2 enrollment programs:

WHR – Each active female is enrolled at $16 until April 1. For the $16 you get the registration and transfer of the calf born in 2023. You will also get EPDs on unregistered calves with weight data in valid contemporary groups. The enrollment fee goes up after April 1.

PPR – Each active female is enrolled, however there is no fee attached to the enrollment. You will pay the traditional registration and transfer fees as you register and transfer the calves, depending on the age of the calf. EPDs on unregistered calves is not part of the PPR program.

Animals Held in the System

If an animal is registered online and held in the system, you can transfer that animal at any time. If an animal was registered online, but wasn’t held in the system, it will not be able to be transferred online. You will need to fill out the back of the certificate that was mailed to you and send it back to the office to be transferred.

WHITE GOLD Task force working to capture value for commercial producers of Charolais-influenced cattle.

There aren’t too many scenes that’ll make a commercial cattle producer – and their banker – prouder than looking at a growthy, stout, smoky calf standing almost as tall as his black or baldie mama. The picture can change depending on the location of the ranch – he might be looking at the same scale-busting calf next to a good tiger-striped mama down south.

Either way, producers have long known that capitalizing on the magic of heterosis compounded with the use of a terminal-breed sire is a profitable way to max out the scales at weaning, as yearlings or fat cattle. With the nation’s Jan. 1 beef cow inventory hitting one of the lowest numbers seen in recent history due to widespread drought, it is more important than ever for the commercial rancher to take advantage of a bullish market predicted for calves and feeders over the next few years.

With a much smaller herd and the need to go slow with restocking as the land recovers from drought –hopefully before the next one hits – every pound will count. Unfortunately, the market is set up today based on premiums for black-hided cattle and given that the cattle cycle has been in the heavy-supply stage, where every segment after the ranch has enjoyed the ability to be choosey, it has meant good cattle of all colors don’t always get sold for the value they bring to the industry at every stage.

It’s a problem Charolais seedstock producers are not willing to deal with any longer. So much so that the American-International Charolais Association has created a task force of progressive breeders and outside consultants to explore every possible opportunity to make sure their commercial bull buyers get additional or new market access for their calves.

“Numerous closeout sheets from Charolais-influenced cattle harvested at Tyson plants in the past two years document these cattle produce carcasses that compete extremely well on the rail,” says AICA Executive Vice President Clint Rusk. “It is imperative this carcass value be reflected in the live market.”

Charolais breeders are not alone in their quest to fix the problem.

“Our task force is already working with another task force led by Tom Brink, chief executive o cer of the Red

Angus Association of America, to explore a change in the way feeder cattle are marketed,” Rusk explains. “Our Charolais breeders agree with those who say feeder cattle should be marketed on their genetic merit rather than the color of their hide.”

Last year, Brink released an important white paper with results of a survey of feedlot managers that shows they also see a great need for change in the feeder cattle market. When asked if black-hided feeder cattle are superior to non-black cattle of equal weight, sex and health history, 75% disagreed with that statement.

In fact, 92% of the survey participants agreed or strongly agreed with this statement: “For the beef industry to continue improving its overall cattle quality and value, hide color should be replaced with more objective genetic criteria as a key price-determining factor(s) in the U.S. feeder cattle market.”

What will it take to make those changes so smoky or cream-colored calves can get premiums for their performance? For the Charolais task force, all options are on the table, from feeder cattle marketing programs, better utilization of existing grids for Charolaisinfluenced cattle, data gathering from private sources to solidify how these cattle excel in terms of feed e ciency, average daily gain and overall performance at the feedlot and packer in terms of both red meat yield and quality grade on the rail.

They are working on getting Charolais-influenced cattle into the latest sustainability research projects to study their e ciency advantages relative to other breeds. If carbon capture and greenhouse emissions play a role in the future of beef, breeders on the task force believe the breed’s natural e ciency and performance will be a competitive advantage in that arena.

The task force has met with major packing company executives to determine how Charolais-influenced cattle are perceived on their end and what the association can do to help increase demand for the cattle at the retail level. They’ve also initiated discussions on private branding with meat marketing experts.

Basically, these breeders are reaching out to every segment of the industry to lay groundwork leading to a premium structure for Charolais-influenced cattle at the commercial level. Charolais-influenced cattle are already

Q: What is your favorite thing about the Charolais Breed?

A: Most who know me, know that I’ve always had a spot in my heart for the Maine-Anjou and Chianina breeds. Within the last couple of years, I have found a love for the Charolais breed. I have been very successful in the show ring with white cows and now, my genetics are starting to be successful, too. It’s a whole different level when you can watch the animals you raise find success in the show ring. The people within the Charolais breed also make the time spent with white cows second to none.

A: Outside of showing livestock, I enjoy being outside, spending extra time during the summer at the lake and being with friends and family. I have also found many clubs and organizations to be involved in while at Iowa State.

Q: What do you want to accomplish as an AIJCA board member?

A: I hope to continue to increase involvement throughout the association. Involvement increases can be seen in many ways. As a team, we can work to push juniors from our state to participate in contests. I hope that by becoming a junior board member, I can also be an encouragement to younger members to step outside of your comfort zone, and even sometimes outside of a breed that you grew up with, to not only better yourself, but those around you as well. I can also work to increase involvement through the Iowa Junior Charolais Association, whether that be promoting more frequent meetings or having social gatherings periodically.

Q: What are you planning on doing after you graduate college?

A: Post graduation, I hope to find a job in an agriculture classroom or within an ag firm in the marketing/communications department. I hope to be working within the agriculture industry and starting a family of my own. I look forward to staying involved in the show cattle industry while continuing to raise show heifers and bulls to sell.

Q: How many different states have you shown cattle in?

A: Based on a rough count, I think I’ve shown in more than 10.

Q: What are your Hobbies/Interests? (Outside of the Charolais Industry)Q: Where was your first Charolais Junior National and how many total have you attended?

A: I am late to the game, so I didn’t attend my first Charolais Junior National until 2019 when it was held in Fort Worth. Since then, I’ve attended 3 junior nationals. At each junior national, I work to meet more people, become more involved and leave a lasting impact on those around me.

Q: What is your favorite junior national contest and why is it your favorite?

A: I always enjoy participating in the quiz bowl contest. This is an opportunity to work with kids of all ages to answer industry questions about the Charolais breed and the beef industry as a whole. Both working with younger members and answering industry questions makes for lots of laughs, as well as new friends each and every year.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

A: My dad always told me not to get myself painted in a corner whenever we were getting ready for shows. For a while, it was just an ongoing joke, but now I’ve learned it’s a valuable lesson with everything I do in life to plan ahead and control what I am able to.

well-liked in the industry. Ranchers appreciate the cattle for their performance, feeders love them for their e ciency and packers value their cutability, ability to grade Choice or better, as well as putting more product in the box. The task for these seedstock folks is to find ways to capture the realworld value of Charolais-influenced calves.

Marcine Moldenhauer is one of the industry experts AICA has tapped to advise the task force. She has experience both as a breeder of Charolais, Red Angus and Maine-Anjou, 25 years in cattle procurement as a cattle buyer, strategic supply manager and leading the premium sales and marketing team for a major packer. For the last 15 years as owner of Meatlink Management, LLC, her livestock and meat business consulting firm, she has worked with multiple companies in multiple countries, breed associations, chefs and specialty fed cattle beef programs on the challenges and how to approach creating and supplying a branded beef program.

“Packers know the value of Charolais-cross cattle, they do cutting tests, they track performance, they know,” she explains. “They know Charolais-cross are going to yield from live to carcass and from carcass to the box; the packers know these cattle have very favorable quality grades with low yield grades. They know these cattle are a good value. However, because over the last 10 years or so there have been plant closings and increased supply, the packers have simply not had to pay more for these types of cattle.”

For years, USDA has only recognized “Angus” as 51% black hided, those cattle that are percentage Angus (red or black), have not been accepted into “Angus” brands, such as black-nosed Charolais or the blonde-hided cattle. She believes in order to compete with that, it’s necessary to cultivate either a foodservice, retail or a small restaurant partner – better yet one of each – that understands the value and sees an opportunity for them.

“This is why Cargill, for one, created their Sterling Silver brand over 25 years ago,” she adds. “The other challenge is to create multi-tiered brands where Charolais-cross cattle that are USDA Select or higher all have a home in a branded beef program. You want multiple programs for the Charolais-influenced cattle to go into. The reality is the packer is not going to find your customer for you, that will be the breed’s job.”

One of the breeders on the task force is Brett DeBruycker of Montana, who says the Charolais association is up for the challenge.

“We’re being very aggressive in fleshing out the different opportunities,” he says. “I think the association is refocusing on what is most important to our business, and that is the commercial cattle producer. I’ll admit we fell

behind in promoting what our breed can do.

“For instance, I have documentation that pink-nosed, straightbred Charolais cattle qualified for the following premiums in the summer of 2022. Steers received $80/head and heifers received $85/head on the U.S. Premium Beef grid. These cattle added value to the industry by grading and yielding well on the rail,” he adds.

“You’ve got to hand it to Angus, they were out helping packers sell meat, spending money as an association talking to retailers while we, as a breed, were focusing on breed improvement and adding value to our customers and the industry through increased performance, e ciency and carcass quality,” DeBruycker adds. “Hindsight being 2020, we should have been helping packers sell Charolais beef. One of the things I have learned on this task force is how vitally important it is for our breed to talk to consumers.”

A few years ago, he took a phone call from a gentleman from France who recently moved to Washington state. The man was very excited to have found DeBruycker Charolais online because he had been looking for Charolais beef since moving to the U.S. The man told him in France, Charolais is considered a delicacy and everybody there wants to eat it. DeBruycker says more U.S. consumers would share that fondness for beef from the white breed if they got a chance to taste it and know where it came from.

Mark Nelson is also advising the Charolais task force, and he too has seen the other side of the business having ran the Angus America program for Cargill for seven years. He says part of what the breed needs to keep its eyes on is being ready for the future, when the cattle cycle turns again and cattle numbers are on the rise.

“I think in the next five years, ranchers will benefit from high prices due to short supplies,” he says. “But we all know those high prices won’t last. So, the breed needs to have something up and running on all cylinders by then so folks with Charolais-cross calves will be able to use them when they really need them. There is so much potential with this breed. Charolais is the kingpin of what they do. The cattle have really been begging for their breeders to do something like this because the cattle merit it.”

So, from a commercial perspective what does this mean for their Charolais-influenced calves being born now? It means those white bulls in the pasture will bring home gold for you now by putting extra pounds on the scale when every pound is likely to be worth much more than it has been when cattle numbers were high. And, if the Charolais task force does the job it hopes to accomplish, you’ll have not just more pounds to sell in the future but also more premiums and demand for those high-performing calves. MARIE DOWNEY (19), PRATTVILLE, ALABAMA

How did you get involved in the Charolais breed?

Marie – I personally have been involved with the Charolais breed since I was 9, when I first started showing cattle. My grandpa bought his first Charolais in 1965, but our herd in Alabama started with the calves that my sisters and I showed. My dad was already connected to the Charolais breed thanks to his dad and brothers, so when I became old enough to have a show calf, Charolais was the breed I got involved with. Charolais were not a very common breed at our shows when I first began showing, and many times, it was just me and my sisters in the AOB division with our purebred Charolais. Since then, our numbers have grown, and through this breed, I have formed many lifetime friendships and connections.

What other activities do you participate in?

Marie – In high school, I was heavily involved in my church youth group and in sports, mainly basketball and soccer. Now that I am in college, my main focus is at the Baptist Student Union, where I am part of the Leadership Team. I am also part of the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Club (which allowed me to attend the Mississippi State Fair this year), the Society of Women in Engineering, and American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

What is your favorite memory that you have made?

Marie – It is really hard to pinpoint one exact favorite memory, however, I love calving season. I like going out in the pasture, searching for the hiding cow and calf, and then the most nervewracking part, pinning the calf to tag and check on it. I remember teaching one of my show calves to eat pears… It was adorable to watch her follow me in circles trying to get another bite of pear.

What is your cattle operation based on?

Marie – Our operation is a fairly small one, derived from the best of our show projects. Due to limited grazing space, we prioritize sound structure above all else. Then, we place emphasis on breeding performance. Our main goal is to produce sound breeding bulls for our Fall Sale every November, where we sell the bulls we have raised with a few other consigners. However, the heifers we either show until we retire them to our herd, or we put them in production sales.

How do you stay involved in the AIJCA?

Marie – The main involvement I have with the Junior Charolais Association is the Junior National Show & Leadership Conference every summer. Although I love the showing portion of Junior National, my favorite part to the week is competing in the different events hosted at there. I like to be as involved as possible with the contests outside of the actual showing. My favorite competitions are the Interview/Resume and Photo contests. I enjoy the Interview

contest simply because I enjoy the nature of the competition, but I also like the photo contest, because it reminds me to take pictures of the things I enjoy so greatly, yet rarely remember to capture in a photo. I also really like the team-based events, like team fitting and quiz bowl, as it often enables me to meet and work with new people.

Who has been your role model in the Charolais breed?

Marie – There are many people who have had a huge influence on me in the Charolais Breed. My dad first and foremost who is the sole reason I am involved in anything cattle related. He has been my primary source of knowledge of cattle and also a source of general wisdom, typically given while working with the cows. But also people like Mr. Bobby Keahey and Mr. Willie Franklin Sykes to name a few, who have always loved and supported me and my sisters in our endeavors with the Charolais breed. I admire not only their generosity but also the operations that they manage.

As for in the show area, I look up to my cousin, Nathan. Although he is no longer showing himself, he still has a passion for showing and is pretty good at it as well. He always has time to stop and teach, whether that be about clipping and fitting, general showmanship tips, or something more general about herd management. And lastly, my Uncle Dale who took me to my first show ever, and then asked me to show in it (the highlight of the trip, despite my initial fear of going in the ring). He has always pushed me to do new things and he is always extremely patient when teaching me how to do said things.

What are your future goals?

Marie – I really have no specific goals, just going where the Lord leads me. I am currently studying Chemical Engineering at Mississippi State, with hopes to Co-op sometime in the near future. While this is not directly related to the Charolais Industry, I want to stay involved with either my family’s herd operations, or maybe even one of my own after graduation.

ONE-MILLIONTH CHAROLAIS BULL

For nearly 70 years, the American-International Charolais Association has registered and recorded Charolais cattle. Beginning with the very first registered Charolais bull in 1957, he could be recognized not only by his name, Champ Rue, but also by his historic registration number, M1. Fast forward to winter of 2023, the American-International Charolais Association prepared to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity for its breeders. The one-millionth registration of a Charolais bull.

The chance to obtain this registration number was offered as lot 23 in the 44th National Charolais Sale in Denver, Colorado on January 14, 2023. There, Thomas Ranch, Harrold, South Dakota, and Hansen Farms, Turton, South Dakota; along with The Friends of Charolais Youth Syndicate were able to achieve the winning bid of $18, 750 to obtain this historic registration number for SVY Mayfield 30H.

Success is not an unfamiliar trend for Mayfield. As shortly after Thomas Ranch and Hansen Farms acquired him, he was named Supreme Champion Bull over all breeds at the 2022 Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan where he was exhibited by Serhienko Cattle Co, Maymont, Saskatchewan and Cays Cattle from Kinistino, Saskatchewan. He was then brought to the U.S. only about three weeks prior to the National Western Stock Show. Showing him at Denver was a tough decision for the partnership to make, however, it paid off when he was named Grand Champion Bull at the National Roll of Excellence Charolais Show.

The National Western Stock Show was full of trying choices for the owners of Mayfield. However, when it came to deciding on bidding on the lot 23 in the 44th National Charolais Sale, it seemingly came easy. sale shortly before. There, they presented a package of two hundred units of semen by SVY Mayfield 30H, which sold for $140,000 to Aces Wild Ranch in Millsap, Texas. This success assisted to making the decision to bid on lot 23, however a chance to “Cement this bull in history and still greatly benefit the foundation”, is what truly made the decision for BJ Hansen.

When it comes to the history of the Charolais breed, Thomas Ranch and Hansen Farms individually and as a partnership certainly draw a long line. Dating back to the late sixties, both families were pioneers for producing Charolais cattle in South Dakota. As their partnership grew, they have achieved much between the two operations.

However, the accolades won can only begin to describe their involvement and dedication to the Charolais breed. The Thomas and Hansen families have a long history with the American Charolais Foundation (ACF). Both played a crucial role in helping the ACF Youth and Education Fund take off. In 2015 the first donation heifer, TR Ms Wrangler 5532C, was sold in a dispersal sale at Thomas Ranch. Yet, this was only the beginning of the support for the ACF from Thomas and Hansen duo. Hansen Farms purchased the donation female and later sold her daughter, HFCS Ms Ember E160, three times to accumulate $18,500 in funds for the ACF Youth & Education Fund in 2018.

The American Charolais Foundation is dedicated to meeting the challenges of the future and finding ways to keep the breed progressing in all ways. Amidst its’ creation, the ACF based itself on finding ways to provide additional research, breed development and educational activities benefiting the beef cattle industry and the Charolais breed. The one-millionth registered bull is a stepping stone in the progression of the Charolais breed and proves the strides made by early breeders to be worthwhile.

The 117th National Western Stock Show continued the annual celebration of western heritage and tradition with near record attendance. Over seven hundred thousand guests were in attendance.

The 44th National Charolais Sale held in the Stockyards Event Center Wagner Equipment Sale Arena, established a record-breaking National Sale gross. Charolais breeders and cattlemen from across the country, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom were in the seats and actively bid on the seedstock offering from 11 states. The National Sale saw selections made from 11 states and Canada.

Building a

The Charolais breed has a 52 year history of building the breed’s future.

Development of the AIJCF began in 1970 when breed leaders met and formulated the initial plans to provide leadership and scholarship opportunities for Charolais youth.

These efforts lead to the AIJCF’s first leadership and scholarship programs being introduced at the 1973 National Junior Leadership Conference.

Through the early 1980’s, AIJCF programs continued to expand with the support of Charolais breeders nationwide.

1985 was a benchmark year for AIJCF when major contributions allowed for the program’s first endowed scholarships. Today, eight endowed scholarship funds form the foundation for the program.

In 2022, AIJCF awarded 28 youth from 17 states more than $42,000 in scholarships. An additional $4,250 is awarded to 9 exhibitors at the Junior National Show and Leadership Conference. Selection criteria includes academic and leadership excellence. The Raymond Hicks Fund provides support for the Junior National Leadership Conference.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Charges dependent upon stage of production will be invoiced to advertisers who cancel previously submitted advertising.

DISCOUNTS

A 5% discount for all advertising will be given if prepaid for one year. No agency commissions allowed on breeder rates.

CLOSING DATES

All advertising copy (including photos) must be in the Charolais Journal office by the 25th of the second month preceding publication, i.e. Jan. 25 for the March issue or the first working day thereafter. A $100 late fee will be applied to all late advertisements. Proof deadline: 20th of the second month preceding publication, i.e. Jan. 20 for March issue.
