What Would We Do Different... by John Boddicker, executive vice president Gosh, to be young again! Each and every year at our National Junior Show, it is a delight to see the youth of the Maine-Anjou breed renew old friendships, make new friends, tackle the challenges of contests and have a great time doing it. Competition is a good thing when everyone keeps it in perspective. I heard a comment once that has always stayed with me, it has its application to the actual livestock show as well as contest competition. First, you have to start with a good project animal or have sound knowledge of the contest subject. Second, you have to know how to manage. Third, your presentation has to be good. Fourth, you have to have a little bit of luck. Apply these four principles and we can do anything in life. When you stop to think about it, the biggest winners, year in and year out, may not be the ones who garnered the purple ribbon or won first prize in the contest. It may very well be the individual who gave that speech in front of a crowd or a young exhibitor who got up the courage to explain to a stranger why they should buy his or her animal. Those are the life learning experiences that make the National Junior Show what it is really about. The following section is authored by Dr. Val Farmer and was published in the May 15, 2010 issue of the Iowa Farmer Today. The

whole article is not reprinted, but please enjoy what we have chosen to focus on as it fits in to our youth and junior program.
On Work and Success
● Success at work is no substitute for happiness in the home. ● Success has a price. The price of success is hard work. ● What is truly worthwhile takes time and effort. ● There are no shortcuts to greatness. ● Find a need and fill it with quality. Your product or service will not sell itself. You have to do it. ● Do quickly and well what you ask others to do. It will give you moral authority in leadership. ● Other people know more than you think. Respect others wisdom and ideas. ● Love learning. All your life. There is so much to learn. ● Learn to be a team player. There is great power when committed people work together for common goals. ● Be generous with your praise and recognition of other’s efforts and accomplishments. ● Rejoice in other’s successes. ● Be a self-starter. Don’t wait to be told what to do. ● Put things first. Start with the end in mind. ● True solutions lie in solving
other people’s problems as you solve your own. ● When you cheat, you are only cheating yourself. ● Don’t look for the easy way. It is by doing hard things that we grow. ● Have courage to stand up for what is right, even if it costs you dearly. Your word is your bond. As we move from one junior show to the next, may all of our junior members mature along the way, find ways to improve in needed areas and truly enjoy what each day given to us has to offer. I would be remiss to not once again thank all who had a hand in making the 2010 National Junior Show the success it was. If we were to print a list of names it would be a long one, made up of individuals who tirelessly worked together for the participating junior members and their families to have a wonderful experience in Spencer, Iowa. Mission accomplished, great job!
Regional Junior Shows One of our junior programs that has not gained as much traction as we had anticipated is that of our regional show format. The two main objectives for starting this program were: 1. To give Maine-Anjou youth in different regions, that may not be able to attend a National Junior Show, a small glimpse of what that experience may be like.

Headquarters Headquarters 2. To give Maine-Anjou breeders in that region a chance to support and expand their junior market. Presently the four regional sites are: (also listed on the AJMAA junior page www.maine-anjou. org) Southeast Regional, held in conjunction with the Georgia Junior Beef Futurity, Perry, Ga., July 17, 2010. Eastern Regional, held in conjunction with the Keystone International Livestock Show (KILE), Harrisburg, Pa.,

Oct. 2, 2010. Western Regional, held in conjuntion with Cal Poly’s Western Bonanza, Paso Robles, Calif., February 2011. Southwest Regional, held in conjunction with the Oklahoma Youth Expo, Stillwater, Okla., April 2011. The AMAA is going to renew its effort to make these regional events a meaningful event for participating juniors. We would ask any breeder in those given regions to step forward and help support the show in your
respective region. If we can accomplish the two original objectives for having the regional format, the Maine-Anjou breed will have taken another small step to insure its future. The Quest for Data... by Dave Steen, commercial developmental director
The last two years the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) has held a National Maine-Anjou Bull Test at the Green Springs Bull Test Center in Nevada, Mo. The results for the two sales were favorable with the first year being better than last year. Ten bulls were delivered in the first trial with nine making the sale. The second year saw 24 bulls being delivered with 15 bulls making the sale. In both tests the bulls were included in a 112 day feeding period that included the 60 day residual feed intake (RFI) test. In both tests Maine-Anjou bulls were efficient with RFI averages of -1.27 and -0.1447. To offer the availability of tested Maine-Anjou genetics nationwide, the AMAA has decided to discontinue the National Bull Test. Instead we will offer a number of other bull testing sites available throughout the country. With bull testing sites potentially being closer to your marketing areas, this will help to promote your genetics and improve both bull and female sales in your area. Bull Test Sites Available ● Iowa Beef Improvement Association (IBIA), Kelli Carolan, bull test director. There will be three testing sites available with three sales per year. ● Site one will be Amana Farms, Amana, Iowa with a delivery date the first Monday in October and the sale in March at the Bloomfield Livestock Auction, Bloomfield, Iowa.

● Site two will be Van Meter Feedyards, Guthrie Center, Iowa with a delivery date the first Monday in November. The sale is slated for the third Saturday in April at the Tama Livestock Auction. ● Site three will be Van Meter Feedyards, Guthrie Center, Iowa with a delivery date the first week in November. The sale will be held at the Dunlap Livestock Auction, Dunlap, Iowa the first Friday in April. ● Average total cost with sale commission included, is approximately $600 to $650 per bull. There is a $60 entry fee for Iowa producers. Bulls consigned from other states will be charged a $160 entry fee with $100 refunded back to the consignor if their bull makes the sale. ● Illinois Performance Bull Test is slated for February. The sale will be held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield, Ill. ● Western Illinois University (WIU) Bull Testing Program will hold a sale in March at the WIU Livestock Center in Macomb, Ill. ● Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association (WBIA) Annual Performance Selected Bull Sale will be held in April at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, Wis. ● Tifton and Calhoun Georgia Bull Test. A total of 117 bulls, representing nine breeds or breed combinations, are presently being tested. ● Connors Bull Test, Warner, Okla. A succesful and long standing multi-breed tradition,
Connors holds both a successful spring and fall sale supported by a large group of Oklahoma bred Maine-Anjou bulls. ● Oklahoma Beef Improvement Test (OBI), Stillwater, Okla. A multi-breed bull test that has received a small number of Maine-Anjou bulls for testing. ● B & B Cattle Company Bull Development Program, Brad Barrett, Normangee, Texas. ● Midland Bull Test, Columbus, Mont., held sales April 7, 8 and 9, 2010. With a large number of bulls that were RFI tested, this created added value. The breeds represented: Angus, Gelbvieh, Salers, Charolais, Simmental, Red Angus, South Devon, Hereford, Murray Grey and Braunvieh. All breeds received a 120 day test that included a 70 day RFI test for feed efficiency. ● Multi-bull testing sites are available in the following states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming. This complete list of states will give those of you interested an idea of possible bull testing sites that are available in a close proximity to your area. It is my belief the Maine-Anjou breed must continue to strive to produce

Commercial Connection the superior performance and carcass traits that we have been known for. I am not advocating that all bulls need to be tested and sold through a bull test, but it does present another marketing avenue to showcase your genetics to the public. We have a breed that can compete and do it efficiently! These types of tests let you, the breeder, promote your product. Thank you to all of the seedstock breeders that consigned and supported the National MaineAnjou bull test the last two years. It was greatly appreciated! The possibility of another National Maine-Anjou bull test may be revised at a later date. Tri County Steer Carcass Furturity/Iowa State University Lewis, IA (TCSCF) For the second year, the AMAA will offer producers the option to feed their cattle to obtain carcass and feeding information from the Tri County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF). This futurity began in 1982 with 35 Iowa producers consigning 105 head. Since that time heifers have been added to the program allowing for feedlot and carcass evaluation to be obtained and ultimately tracking feedlot profitability animal by animal. The TCSCF board of directors regulates the program with oversight by the Iowa State University Extension staff. The ISU Extension Feed Specialist

also assists with data collection, genetic evaluation, marketing and sorting. In the last seven years TCSCF has evaluated more than 40,000 cattle from 13 states. Carcass EPDs will be generated on the calves in this trial that are sire identified. These cattle are presently being harvested at the Tyson plant in Denison, Iowa where complete carcass data is being collected. Thank you to the four producers that delivered a total of 38 head in the fall of 2009. Your support of this feeding trial is very much appreciated. Producers are: • Rick & Rosemary Carlson, Plattsburg, Mo., nine steers and four heifers • Mike Holden, Scranton, Iowa, 10 steers • Jim Opperman, Manning, Iowa, 10 steers • Doug Ferguson, Blue Springs, Neb., five steers Early carcass data has shown the strength of the Maine-Anjou breed. I will report the complete results in the October Commerical issue of the Voice. Tri-County feedyards, located in southwest Iowa, is approximately one hour east of Omaha, Neb. There is no limit to the amount of cattle you may enter. Please consider helping to make this carcass futurity an annual event for the Maine-Anjou breed. A continual increase in the number of cattle that are delivered helps to substantiate the strength of the Maine-Anjou breed. Please join us this fall. We would appreciate your

participation. Iowa Steer and Heifer Tests TCSCF will offer four delivery dates for steers and heifers in October, November, December and January. The exact delivery dates are undecided at this time. These tests will be for calves weaned a minimum of 30 - 45 days. It is recommended to use a modified live vaccine (MLV) at weaning or a cow safe MLV two weeks prior to weaning. If a killed vaccine is your only option, repeat at three weeks. They have dropped the Haemophilus Sommus vaccine from the recommended list. You and your veterinarian can decide if you should use a pasteurella vaccine. Cattle may be delivered on more than one date. Please contact Dave if you have questions concerning the TCSCF program. Entries should be returned to TCSCF along with $20 per head pen reservation deposit by the dates in the table below. This fee will be credited back to your account. Producers delivering a minimum of 10 head can receive $300 per head payment. Feed cost will be deducted from the proceeds of the cattle when they are sold. No one will be billed for feed! Town Hall Meetings The AMAA will be holding “Town Hall” meetings again this year throughout the country to share timely information and data with today’s commercial producers to enhance the use and sale of Maine-Anjou genetics. With the use of powerpoints, pictures, brochures, carcass data and feeding closeout information we are able to show producers the value that is the Maine-Anjou breed. Whenever possible we will use feedlot managers, successful cattlemen using Maine-Anjou genetics, order buyers who know their value or whatever it takes within our means to sell the Maine-Anjou breed. To date we have held seven meetings in the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Nebraska, Tennessee and Florida. These meetings have created a great amount of interest from producers with numerous questions regarding Maine-Anjou genetics, particularly bulls. These
Town Hall meetings are designed to inform cattlemen about the Maine-Anjou breed and it’s ability to create value for producers both on and off the rail. This information is backed up with actual carcass and closeout data and producer testimonials that have been a great asset to the Maine-Anjou breed. We are open to any suggestions that you may have. Finance charges are now being applied to all accounts that are over 60 days past due. The following charges will apply: $5 charge per month on an outstanding balance of $250 and under; $10 charge per month on an outstanding balance of $251 to $500; $20 charge per month on an outstanding balance of $501 to $1000 and $25 charge per month on an outstanding balance of $1001 and above.

Keep in mind there is a moratorium on registration costs during the calendar year of 2010. If you are enrolled in MAPP, any animal can be registered for $20, regardless of age; if you are in Breeders Choice, the registration fee is $30.

It is now time to register show animals for winter shows. Please keep in mind during the winter show season, you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($25 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.

Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site at www.maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed the following day by clicking on “Breed Information,” then “Search the Maine-Anjou Breed.”

DUES REQUIREMENT
Please note if a buyer submits a registration and/or transfer from an owner that is not currently a dues-paid member, that buyer will be charged for the seller’s membership fee or annual dues (adult dues are $100). The exception to this rule is if all animals owned by that individual (non - or inactive member) are being transferred or cancelled at the same time as what the buyer has submitted, the membership fee would be waived. In that regard, work is held until complete payment is received.

Summer Splash 2010 Intro by Kasey Herman, AMAA Director of Youth Activities The 2010 National Junior Show was a successful week with good weather, great food and catching up with old friends. Juniors from 22 states gathered in Spencer, Iowa to participate in a week full of activities at the 2010 National Junior Maine-Anjou Show, Summer Splash. Two hundred thirty participants exhibited 260 head of Maine-Anjou and MaineTainer cattle during two days of phenomenal cattle shows, while participating in a week full of educational, fun contests. The National Junior Show allows juniors from all over the United States to show off their hard work and dedication. It brings them together for the opportunity to make friendships that will last a lifetime, learn new skills from participating in contests and the thrill of competition. Thank you to all the sponsors, contributors, judges and volunteers for everything you did to make this week a huge success.
Make plans to join us next year in Kansas City, Mo., June 26 - July 2, 2011.

2010 SWEEPSTAKES WINNERS
E
very year at the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show, junior members participate in a number of contests throughout the week with hopes to earn points towards an overall sweepstakes championship within their age division. The individual sweepstakes is the highest honor an individual is awarded at the national banquet. Individuals earn points in every contest they participate in. Points are awarded to first through fifth place in each contest with additional participation points awarded to everyone involved in each contest.
An overall state sweepstakes award is also given based on each state’s participation. Points are awarded for each individual from a specific state participating in a contest. The more juniors entered in a specific contest for a state, the more points awarded to that state. This year’s sweepstakes winners are: Skyler Miller, Wyo., junior; P.D. Miller, Wyo., intermediate, and Cody Green, Ark.; senior. Iowa was able to beat out Oklahoma in the state sweepstakes category this year!

2010 AJMAA Junior Board Minutes
Meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. by President, Laurie Reid. Roll call was announced, all states were present except for Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Florida. It was noted that there were fill in delegates for South Carolina due to Carrie Elmore running as a queen candidate and could not vote. Cameron Alexander, Ohio and Matt David, La., filled in for South Carolina, because they were from the same region. A treasurer’s report was given by Candace Muir. There was no old business to be discussed. Queen and Board candidates introduced themselves. Expiring board terms were Laurie Reid, Region III; Candace Muir, At-Large; Cody Green, Region I and Rashele Blakley, Region III.
elections were held. Viaing for a position in the Region 1 election was Olivia

Foster and Rachael Carlson. Rachael Carlson won the Region 1 candidate position. Viaing for a postion in Region II was Bailey Core, Core was the automatic winner. Viaing for a position in the Region III election was between Bailey Buck and Lisa Reid. Reid won the Region III candidate position. Two positions were available for the At-Large director. The first vote was between Mackenzi Dorsey and Ryan Holaway. Mackenzi Dorsey won the At-Large position. For the second position At-Large, Olivia Foster, Bailey Buck and Ryan Holaway were the candidates. Bailey Buck won the position. This is a one year term due to filling requirements for region II. The position to serve as National Maine-Anjou Queen was voted on, but not announced. There was no new business discussed. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

RUSH ORDERS
If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a TIMELY MANNER to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order they are received; the rush fee is currently $25 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff’s responsibility to call breeders who fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. We will do our best to complete rush work received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday-Friday), so it will go out the next business day. There is no same-day turn-around. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. Thank you!

Please submit any TH/PHA status on your cattle if you have not already done so. Please include registration numbers. Status can be viewed on our Web site by clicking on "Search the MA Breed" keying in a registration number and looking at the GAB status. You can obtain the appropriate forms for sample submission on our Web site as well, by clicking on "Genetic Abnormality Information" found on the left side of the homepage. Please note we are now accepting results from AgriGenomics, Igenity labs or Pfizer Animal Health.
ATTEnTIOn ALL BREEDERS SUBMITTInG PHA/TH SAMPLES Please be patient and keep in mind that it takes approximately two to three weeks to process samples and then get the results back to you. It is up to you to forward a photocopy of results to our office. Make sure the registration numbers are listed on the photocopy so we can match the sample with the correct animal.

Please keep in mind that we currently require all donor dams and AI sires to have BOTH TH and PHA on file at the AMAA. Owners of such individuals will continue to receive notices until the AMAA has documentation with the status. If the donor dam or AI sire is no longer alive, please submit a disposal code with such information. Granted, the option is available on deceased AI sires to send a sample of thawed semen. Make sure the sample is packaged properly to reduce the chance of crushing the straw through the mail and the lab not having a viable sample to test.

Summer Splash by Ryan Jones, AJMAA President
Vacation, what’s that? For as long as I can remember my family vacation has consisted of the week long trek to Maine-Anjou Junior Nationals. From June 1925 the Clay County Fairgrounds in Spencer, Iowa opened their doors for juniors from as far away as Georgia and South Carolina to Wyoming and Colorado. The Iowa Maine-Anjou Association could not have done a better job putting on one of the most succesful events I have attended. The week began with check-in on Sunday afternoon and picked up rapidly with the parade of states Sunday night. Immediately following the parade of states there was a free concert by up and coming country artist Neil Hewitt. Activities like this would set the tone for the rest of the week. Monday through Wednesday were filled with contests, activities and the opportunity to catch up with old friends. Thursday began with judge Steve Reimer, S.D., evaluating a competitive group of steers, MaineTainers and bulls. Friday, John Rayfield, Texas, worked through a tough set of Maine-Anjou females. The annual banquet brought mixed emotions as we bid farewell to four outstanding
board members and welcomed five new ones. With the Summer Splash we welcomed the two newest employees of the American Maine-Anjou Association. It was the first junior national with our new Director of Youth Activities, Kasey Herman and the new Editor of the Voice, Lindsey Broek. Both ladies have done a spectacular job. I would personally like to thank the Iowa Maine-Anjou Association again. Russ Salton and his crew put in countless hours of hard work to make the show a huge success. They went above and beyond providing meals and finding exceptional prizes. Without them, the week would not have gone as smoothly and flawlessly as it did. All of the junior exhibitors were amazing during the entire week. I am proud to say I’m a member of the AJMAA. I can’t wait to see everyone this fall at all of the major shows and I have already started the countdown to Rock in' to 2011 in Kansas City! See you there!

Board Minutes AMAA Board of Directors Meeting June 23, 2010 • Spencer, Iowa Meeting was called to order by President Larry Breon at 3 p.m. Board members present were: Larry Breon, Bill Thorne, Marty Van Vliet, John Dickerson, Troy Jones, Larry Nielsen, Mike Holden, Jirl Buck, Phil Core, Fred Nessler, Mike Hartman. Absent: Josh Enlow, Mark Beauprez, Jerry Adamson, Scott Bilslend. Motion was made and seconded to accept the secretary’s report as printed in the Voice. Motion passed.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Breed Improvement Motion was made and seconded to update the present Cornerstone Dam program in two areas: 75% females and above do not have to have a 75% or above calf in order to be considered. A MaineTainer dam category will also be added. Motion passed. Discussion was held regarding the registration of cloned animals, specifically the regulation that states: Cell-cloned animals must have the permission of the breeder of the source animal before eligibility to register is allowed. John Boddicker was instructed to check with legal counsel and report back at the November meeting regarding the possible deletion of this regulation in order to register a cloned animal. Building & Grounds Motion was made and seconded to resurface the parking lot and accept the updated bid if not in excess of 110% of the previous 2009 submitted bid. Motion passed. Motion was made and seconded to accept a bid to carpet specified heavily traveled areas at AMAA office. Motion passed. Finance Motion was made and seconded to accept the treasurer's report. The judge selection process this year will be repeated for the 20112012 open show schedule. Please forward all new judges names to the AMAA office by Oct. 15, 2010. Youth The 2011 National Junior Show will be held in Kansas City, Mo., June 26 - July 2. AJMAA...Leaders in the Making by: Lindsey Broek
With the livestock industry in a tumultuous roller coaster of ups and downs, it is important for us to educate the youth of today, who ultimately are the leaders of the future. By encouraging involvement in organizations such as 4-H, FFA and Junior Boards we are able to prepare them for what lies ahead. Two past American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) junior board members have maximized these opportunities and are putting the skills they learned during these youth experiences to good use as they prepare to be two of the young leaders in the future of the agriculture industry. I know you will enjoy their stories. Tera Rooney grew up in the heart of cattle country in Satanta, Kan. Through the years she has been an active participant in 4-H, AJMAA and has exhibited countless champions across the country.

Tera is the 22 year old daughter of Pat and Jeanette Rooney, also of Satanta. Her involvement in 4-H and livestock exhibition provided key experiences that led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Animal Science and graduate degree of Veterinary medicine this fall at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. While attending

Kansas State, she was very active on campus. Tera was a member of the following organizations during her undergraduate years: Collegiate Cattlewomen, Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority, Food for Thought, College of Agriculture Ambassador, Assistant Dean Search Committee and Tough Enough to Wear Pink. Along with her school involvement, Tera own’s and operates Teramisu, a cake and pastry business.

Tera was a member of the AJMAA for many years, serving as Queen for the 2005-2006 term, Region II Director for the 20072008 term and President for the 2008-2009 term. It was during this time that Rooney discovered “many doors were opened to make so many of the connections that I have today.” Some of Rooney’s fondest memories include junior board activities. One particular character building experience was in Denver with Cody Green and Jason Salton when her vehicle was towed. “Thank goodness for Cody’s parents who had to go along to retrieve the vehicle from the shady part of town.” Leadership is a trait that Rooney feels is acquired and nurtured by involvement in organizations such as the AJMAA. When Tera
was told by Jirl Buck, owner of Buck Cattle Co., Madill, Okla., her leadership skills rivaled those of past president Jason Salton, Tera said “You’ll never know how much that means to a person”. Tera said Jason Salton was always the junior member she emulated. “It’s a wonderful system when younger members have such great examples of leadership and commitment to look up to.” With agriculture under the microscope and groups like the Humane Society of the United State (HSUS) and PETA challenging our current system of production, we need strong leaders in the industry of the future. When asked how the AJMAA has prepared her for the tough questions regarding these areas, Tera brought up some very good points. Rooney points out that the cattle industry is actually “really fortunate” if you look at the big picture. Rooney said it is evident that there is a lot more customer confidence in our conventional production practices than that of the poultry and swine industries. However, “this doesn’t mean we can relax” said Rooney. “After my term on the junior board, I really looked for opportunities to involve myself in advocacy for our industry”. Rooney noted that it is easy to advocate for the show cattle industry, because most of those animals get treated better than many people in the world, but she emphasized that we need to look beyond the showring for opportunities to speak up for our industry. Rooney feels her involvement with the AJMAA junior board

allowed her to learn to speak with other producers in the industry and understand different perspectives for production goals. She felt it helped her get a feel for the Maine-Anjou breed’s place in the cattle industry of the future. Rooney has indicated “I can see these same values being fostered in a lot of our current junior members; let me tell you that has excited me about the future of the AJMAA and AMAA!” Another future leader who has made his way up through the ranks of the AJMAA is Trae Simmons, a native of Tipton, Indiana.

Trae is the 23 year old son of Mark and Carla Simmons. Trae is a graduate of Butler Community College and Texas Tech University. While attending these two schools, Trae was involved in a number of different activities. He was a member of the 20072008 Livestock Judging Team and Ag Club Board member at Butler. Simmons was on the 2009 National Champion Livestock Judging team and participated in

Block and Bridle at Texas Tech. After graduation Trae plans to pursue a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. While there, he will serve as the head livestock judging coach at Coffeyville Community College. Trae credits a lot of his drive to be involved in the livestock industry to the AJMAA junior board and junior nationals. One of Trae’s fondest memories comes from his very first junior national. From an early age, 9 to be exact, Trae has had a love for the MaineAnjou breed. His first heifer was purchased just to attend the 1997 Maine-Anjou Junior National held in Columbus, Ohio. Although details from that week are sparse, Trae does remember pulling out of the fairgrounds after the show was completed almost in tears because that week was over. “At that point I made my dad promise we would go the next year, and from that point I have not missed a junior national until my eligibility was up,” says Simmons. It was at that very first show that Simmons determined he wanted to be part of the AJMAA board some day. “The board members were always the people I looked up to,” says Simmons. Trae was elected to the board in 2005 at the junior national in Springfield, Missouri. “Being a board member has taught me to be responsible, trustworthy and to be a role model to the younger generation, not only in the Maine-Anjou breed, but the industry as a whole” remarked Simmons. The past couple of years have been a whirlwind of change for the cattle industry. Practices that have gone on for hundreds of years are now being questioned and challenged by groups of people who have never even seen a cow or a calf. When asked how the AJMAA has prepared Trae
for what is to come in the next five to 10 years he said it well. “Right now the entire industry is under a microscope, with that will come change and we need to change in the right direction.” Although he does not feel the cattle industry will ever be as integrated as the poultry or swine industries, he feels we do need to keep up with the times. With input costs rising and a gap between the commercial cattle industry and the showring broadening, Simmons feels it is important for the Maine-Anjou breed to continually strive to make its mark with the commercial cattleman. In order for the breed to succeed and push forward in the next five to 10 years he feels we need to push for the development of breed EPDs and performance, along with continuing to collect the pertinent data that shows how Maine-Anjou genetics can indeed produce profitability in the nation’s cowherd. Simmons feels that in addition to being a showring breed we should strive to put our mark in the commercial industry. The key to the success of the Maine-Anjou breed can also be found in the youth. Simmons encourages us as Maine-Anjou breeders to do whatever it takes to get kids around the country involved. “There are many outstanding Maine-Anjou breeders that produce great Maine-Anjou cattle every year. If we can keep the junior and showring side strong, while we push for the growth of our commercial markets, I do believe Maine-Anjou cattle can and will stand up to the tests of years to come”.

What a “splash” Junior National 2010 was! As I sit here “recovering” from a long week of kids, contests and cows, I can’t help but smile. Being my first, I can honestly say I had no idea what was in store. Although I have attended junior national events in the past, I learned to truly appreciate the tremendous amount of work and countless hours of preparation it takes to put on an event of this magnitude. I am in awe of the amazing volunteer effort and gracious support so generously given by so many, all to help develop and encourage the breeders of tomorrow, our youth members. With that, I would like to start by saying a very special thank you to Russ and Sue Salton, Brian and Joni Worden, Diana Sampson, Mark and Deb Core, Kevin Braun, Brad and Juli Nelson, Marty Van Vliet, Sumner Mapes, Beau Ebersole and the entire Iowa Maine-Anjou Association for their exceptional efforts to host this event. The City of Spencer welcomed us with open arms, and I don’t think I am the only one who is truly grateful for our buddy Luke and the Spencer Event Center for all the hard work they put in while we were there. They gave new meaning
to the phrase “ask and you shall receive.” Without their support, this event would not have been as successful as it was. I also want to say a special thank you to Tera Rooney. For those of you who do not know Tera, she is a past junior board president who has donated countless hours of her free time to this organization and the juniors. Summer Splash 2010 could not have been done without her. Please, if you see any one of those supporters mentioned, take a minute and say thank you. Without them we may still be working on tallying contest results! Another huge success this year was the silent auction held during the week of junior national with the proceeds benefiting the National Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC). Thank you to all those who donated items to the silent auction, it was a HUGE success! All in all it raised approximately $7,000 for the juniors! At this year's banquet, they had set the room for 480 people, and the room was filled to capacity. It is great to see both the youth and adult breeders come together to recognize each others achievements. The banquet also had a fundraiser of its own in the
sale of the traveling steer. I am not sure what they put in the food that night, but boy did we sell it! Four times to be exact. Thank you to Mike and Kathy Bell, Phil Lautner, Miles and Kim DeJong and Willow Springs Ranch! They each purchased the steer at one point or another. It is terrific to see these succesful breeders give back so generously to support youth developement. The money raised will be put towards junior national 2011 when we will be Rock in' to Kansas City! Finally, I would like to congratulate the newest member of the American Maine-Anjou Association, Kasey Herman, our junior director. Kasey, congratulations on your first junior national, you did it! The youth members of today are the leaders of tomorrow and this event is one of the crucial ways we can foster the development of key skill sets they will need to help support and promote our breed in years to come. Thank you to everyone who helped with or supported the 2010 Summer Splash in Spencer, Iowa. We greatly appreciate your generosity and investment in the future of the AMAA.
