Holiday Greetings, I hope you have a blessed and safe holiday season. This past year has been challenging for all of us, from the weather to the markets, and I think we all are looking forward to a fresh start in the New Year.

As we look to 2020 we can feel positive about the demand and growing interest in Maine-Anjou and Maine Angus genetics.

I would like to review some of the great events and actions that were made at the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) in 2019. The year started off with a bang with high interest at the Bright Lights Sale, grossing $311,790, with an average of $6,125 on the bulls and $5,300 on the females. It was a great National Western with a lot of traffic buzz for Maine genetics. This was followed later in the spring with the 2019 Maine Max Bull Test in Wamego, Kan., which included 35 bulls and the sale averaged $2,300 with cattle going to six different states.

Utilizing the latest technology in the advancement of the breed is always a major focus and the 2019 Spring Genetic Evaluation included the first genetically enhanced EPDs to ever be used by the AMAA. This has increased predictability and accuracy for younger cattle and cattle with few performance records. This step was taken by the AMAA Board to have Angus Genetics, Inc., (AGI) run this evaluation to stay current in providing the best information for our membership and their customers.

The AMAA continues to find opportunities for Maine-Anjou to be utilized within the dairy sector as they have focused on producing more beef.

Currently there are over 2,500 dairy cattle that have been bred to Maine-Anjou bulls to calve in the spring of 2020. Although this may not create a large market for live cattle, the use of Maine-Anjou semen could easily be 10-25,000 within the next couple of years if they like the product produced. From our previous dairy ventures we have found that Mainesired dairy cross calves are born easily, are predominately black, stay extremely healthy, grow fast and have drastically improved red meat yields.

The 2019 National Junior Heifer Show

in Des Moines, Iowa held in late June was a huge success. The show featured over 550 head of cattle and kids from 26 different states. The junior show continues to thrive and is highlighted by the best young cattle people in the world. Once again we would like to thank the Iowa Maine-Anjou Association for their tremendous hospitality and all of Lindsey’s hardwork!

One of the other highlights is the use of Maine-Anjou feeder steers being utilized in research projects at South Dakota State University (SDSU). Josh did a great job locating these cattle and coordinating with SDSU to have our cattle involved in the research. A special thank you to the VanHove and Ringkob operations for providing the calves for this trial.

The staff has also branched out in promoting Maine-Anjou by attending the International Marketing Room at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as well as the Florida Cattlemen’s Convention to spread the word and we have increased the use of social media with multiple videos as well as promotional posts. Greater promotion is a major focus for the future!

The AMAA 50th Anniversary celebration was held in Louisville, Ky., on November 17, 2019. There was a great mixture of attendees including some of our early members to some of the bright up-andcoming breeders of today. There were almost 100 attendees from as far away as Texas and Montana. Highlights of the event included recognizing our 30 plus year members, keynote speaker Mark Core, recognizing our Maine Man of the Year, Mr. Rick Carlson and 2019 Breeder of the Year, Morton Cattle Company. One of the great moments of the afternoon was announcing our 2019 Heritage Road Hall of Fame inductees, Kenny and Audrey Bremer of K&A Farms, Blakesburg, Iowa.

It was a great afternoon of fellowship, recognition and excitement for the future of the AMAA! These are just some of the highlights of 2019. We are excited about the growing interest and industry buzz about MaineAnjou and what opportunities 2020 will present!

I hope this finds you well and the beginning of the New Year brings a fresh start to all of us in the agriculture sector.

We have faced a tough year in 2019. For us, the Spring means the next calf crop at home and a chance to see if the breeding decisions we made will create progress or not. It brings to light the question of how to balance breeding cattle to generate look and performance that we want, and yet answers the request of our customer base.

This past Fall at the American MaineAnjou Association (AMAA) Annual Board Meeting, I made light to the fact that I feel as if the cattle industry has gone through a stent in the last decade – that is that seedstock breeders, with guidance of breed associations, push agendas that have segmented the beef industry into a specific trend. That trend is quite obviously based around marbling, achieving the lowest birth weights possible, and increasing EPD driven livestock. Without question, it has made significant impacts and improvements to the beef industry. It has led to us making a more uniform product regardless of breed influence. But, let’s touch base on where that has left us with regards to what the next step is and how we reach whatever that goal may be.

We have spent the last few years telling commercial breeders what they should want in their bulls instead of asking them what they need in the breeding stock they purchase. It’s safe to say that we have made changes that have been very impactful to the beef industry, but at times

it feels that we have forgotten what truly secures our profits. That the profits on the commercial breeder – that’s in the trenches that sells cattle at weaning or after being processed through a Vac-45 program. They are the guys that make the world turn.

Moving forward as seedstock producers and cattlemen/women, be sure to take stock of your marketing plan and decisions. We are in a customer service business that relies heavily on us making sure we answer the request of the buyers that frequent our sales and places of our industry discussions and conferences.

It has never been more important, as cow inventory goes up and supply of available genetics to buyers increase, that we must become more proactive in culturing relationships. Be sure to ask your customer what they need or how you can make a better product. The beef business, like every other commodity driven venture, is based on consistency and customer satisfaction.

Be sure to stay tuned into the Voice and social media in the months to come for updates on the fed cattle trial at South Dakota State University and know that they are off to a great start! First report is that they reached a nearly 4:1 Feed to Gain Ratio and around 3.7 a day. I hope that Christmas and the New Year’s found your family well. I look forward to the Spring and what’s new in advancing the Maine-Anjou breed another step in a positive direction!

Each year the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) holds their National Maine-Anjou Show at a rotating location between the American Royal, Kansas City, Mo., North American International Livestock Association (NAILE) Louisville, Ky., and the Fort Worth Stock Show, Fort Worth, Texas. Special this year, the National Maine-Anjou Show & Annual Meeting was also the host of a very special, milestone birthday for the AMAA, 50 years. Held in conjunction with the 2019 NAILE, the AMAA celebrated 50 great years of existence with breeders from across the country in attendance.

The 50 year celebration was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 17. Kicking off the afternoon was keynote speaker, Mark Core, Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer for Vermeer, Inc. and longtime Maine-Anjou breeder, who lead attendees in the afternoon session.

Mark’s message was clear in describing how far the AMAA has come in its 50 years, but most importantly what is our plan for the next 50, what is our True North? He challenged members to take a look at their practices, to figure out where they excel, what they need to work on and how you can combine this skill set to become the best you can be as a marketer and breeder.

Following Mark’s presentation, Blake Nelson gave the annual meeting report and awards were presented to the following operations; K&A Farms, 2019 Heritage Road Hall of Fame, Morton Farms, 2019 Breeder of the Year and Rick Carlson, 2019 Maine Man of the Year.

A highlight for attendees was also the recognizing of those Legacy Breeders who have held a continuous AMAA membership for greater than 30+ years.

The AMAA was proud to recognize these operations and is thankful for their continued service and commitment to the Maine-Anjou breed.

As we look to the future and our True North, the message is clear, the people who support your endeavors are the key to success. The AMAA has always been fortunate in having a great support system and some of the best breeders in the nation. As we look to the future, it is bright, as we continue on the journey for the next 50 years. Congratulations to the AMAA on their celebration of this momentous, milestone birthday.

Commitment, hard work, and dedication are just a few of the words used when describing this year’s Hall of Fame inductee, K&A Farm, Kenny & Audrey Bremer. Located in Blakesburg, Iowa, K&A was established in 1968 and they started raising cattle in 1971 after Kenny returned from Vietnam. Maine-Anjou cattle were introduced in 1973 to the K&A herd and K&A Farm became an official member of the American Maine-Anjou Association in 1975.

Kenny decided on the Maine-Anjou breed because of their docile temperaments and their excellent performance. Growing up on a diversified Iowa livestock Farm, Kenny knew what it would take to be successful in the cattle business. Kenny was showing cattle before anyone had ever heard of Maine-Anjou and raising and exhibiting livestock has been an important part of his life ever since.

K&A Farm is no stranger to the spotlight.

They have garnered numerous awards on the local, state, national and international level. Kenny & Audrey’s children, Kevin, Keith, Raelynn and Kendall have all shared in this spotlight and have now passed down their knowledge and passion to their grandchildren.

Throughout the years Kenny has been a true champion of the Maine-Anjou breed, promoting them however and wherever possible. He has held titles on the Iowa Maine-Anjou Association Board of Directors, American Maine-Anjou Association Board of Directors along with bringing home several awards from each organization. Kenny was awarded the National Breeder of the Year Award in 1984 and was named Maine Man of the Year in 1993.

Kenny played a significant role in organizing the National Junior Show and helping to grow it to what it is today. He is primarily responsible for starting the popular bull sale the National Western Stock Show, now known as the Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale.

From red to predominately black cattle, K&A Farm has witnessed and taken part in many changes with the breed of the years. K&A Farm has stood the test of time and we are grateful for their continued faith and love for this breed.

Breeder of the Year

Dr. Robert Morton of Morton Cattle Company, Stratford, Oklahoma, strives to build an operation that they and the Maine-Anjou breed can be proud of. Morton has been a member of the American Maine-Anjou Association since 1989 when he began buying Maine-Anjou females for his son, Louis, to exhibit. In 2012 Brett Carter and his family joined the operation as herdsman. With Brett’s knowledge of the Maine-Anjou business and his ability to be progressive as a cattle breeder, Morton Cattle Company has now grown to 400 mother cows that calve in both the spring and fall and 150 ET calves born each year.

Starting with registered Angus cows, Morton became interested in the Maine-Anjou breed more than 30 years ago. Through advice from a friend and longtime Maine-Anjou breeder, Glen Ferris, Morton was introduced to Jirl Buck. From that meeting, a lifelong friendship and partnership began. Buck has been an integral part of growing the Morton program along with helping to market their genetics.

Morton Cattle Company’s philosophy of focusing on fertility, soundness and productivity has worked to create an elite female. This has been aided by only retaining documented and registered females within the operation so even bull serviced calves are registerable. It is their goal to buy and raise females that not only succeed in the showring, but also come home and become high quality, elite females in the herd. This philosophy has paid dividends with the Grand or Reserve Grand Champion Female at the last 4 of the last five junior nationals holding a MTF prefix, additionally, many top five and regional show champion finishes have been earned as well as exhibiting the Grand Champion Maine-Anjou Pen-of-Three Bulls at the 2019 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Morton includes that with the support and guidance from Jirl Buck and the expertise and hard work of Brett Carter, Morton Cattle Company would not have achieved the success they have experienced recently.

A champion outside the ring, Dr. Morton is a tremendous supporter of the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) and their respective programs. He has supported the junior organization to the fullest extent possible, including donating the 2016 Bright Lights “Lot 1” donation female.

Very passionate about the purebred cattle business, Morton Cattle Company knows the value of pedigrees, performance and quality. Morton Cattle Company continues to strive to become a genetic source for breeders to come for high quality females and herd bulls. With a love for the people who are involved in this industry you can plan to see the MTF prefix in the Maine-Anjou breed for many years to come.

Rick Carlson, along with wife, Rosemary, daughter Rachael, and Rachael’s husband, Justin, make up the Carlson Maine-Anjou operation.

Beginning in the Shorthorn breed, the Carlson’s bought their first Maine-Anjou female out of the Denver Maine-Anjou sale in 2003. Over the years the Carlson’s have accumulated genetics from all across the country with a focus on cow families and elite genetic EPD profiles to comprise their herd. In 2005 Rachael captured the Reserve Show Heifer of the Year award with a female named DCC Playmate 140P. In 2006 DCC Playmate 76R was named Show Heifer of the Year. 140P and 76R have since gone on to be foundation females in their herd producing many outstanding progeny.

Rick became further interested in Maine-Anjou after studying each breed and what they had to offer to not only their herd, but the industry as a whole. With a background in the meat packing and commercial industries, Rick liked the complementation of Maine-Anjou when crossed with Angus cattle. Additionally their phenotypic look was superior to the other breeds that they researched. Even today, Rick is quick to remind everyone that this sentiment still holds true and the Maine-Anjou breed is still the way to go.

Rick has been a faithful advocate of the breed for many years, he has served as Secretary/ Treasurer on the American Maine-Anjou Association Board of Directors, President of the Missouri Maine-Anjou Association as well as his continued role spearheading special projects for the AMAA in the recent years.

A consistent champion for Maine-Anjou, Rick’s goal remains steadfast in gaining widespread commercial acceptance for our breed. Through current projects like the bull coop, Rick’s goal is becoming a reality.

ANNUAL MEETING The American Maine-Anjou Association’s (AMAA) Annual Membership Meeting was called to order

by AMAA Board President, Landon Nagel, at 2:15 pm in Louisville, Ky. Board members present were Brian Fox, Leon Matlock, Hardy O’Hara, Cliff Randall, Andy Jones, Jim Opperman, DJ Folkerts, Wyatt DeJong & Beau Ebersole.

AMAA staff present was Blake Nelson, Lindsey Broek, Josh Cribbs, Paige Jones, and Rhonda Boddicker. Additionally many members and guests were present for the meeting.

The invocation was given by Wyatt Dejong.

AMAA President Nagel recognized retiring board members Cliff Randall, Cory Thomsen, Hardy O’Hara and Troy Jones.

They were presented with a gift to show appreciation for their dedicated service.

President Nagel introduced the incoming board members, Brent Tolle, Cali O’Hara, Michael Cramer and Eric Walker.

President Nagle recognized the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) Board of Directors and thanked them for their service to the junior membership.

Cliff Randall, AMAA Secretary/Treasurer, presented the secretaries report and the minutes from the previous annual meeting. Motion was made and approved to accept the minutes as stated.

Randall also presented the current AMAA financial report. Motion was made

and approved to accept the report as given.

Blake Nelson introduced the AMAA staff members that were present and gave an update on the status of the association’s current and future projects.

President Nagel opened up the floor for new business. There was none.

Then opened up the floor for any old business to discuss the motion was made and seconded to adjourn. Motion carried.

BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S MEETING The American Maine-Anjou Association’s (AMAA) Board of Director’s meeting was held in Louisville, Ky., November 15.

Motion made to accept as written and motion carried Motion was made from finance committee by Leon Matlock, seconded by Hardy O’Hara to move $72,733.28 out of Junior American Funds and 80,000 out of the Mainstay funds to a more conservative investment. Motion carried.

Motion was made from the sale committee by Wyatt DeJong, seconded by Hardy O’Hara to direct association staff to implement sale rubric for the Bright Lights sale order in Denver.

The show committee selected Judges for the national shows in the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021.

Discussion of the 2020 Hall of Fame Ceremony was held.

Cliff Randall moved for closed session, seconded by Leon Matlock.

Wyatt Dejong moved to end closed session. seconded by Beau Ebersole.

2020 DUES If you have not paid your 2020 dues please do so as soon as possible. Dues run from January 1 to December 31 of each year no matter when you pay them. Active adult accounts will receive the Voice Magazine as long as dues are current. You may pay your dues by logging into your online account, send the postcard that was mailed out in October with a check or call in payment.

MAPP ENROLLMENT MAPP inventories were due December 15, 2019. An invoice will be mailed to all MAPP participants who did not return inventories by the deadline. These invoices will not be adjusted and will be expected to be paid in full within 60 days from the date of the invoice. Any unpaid balances after the 60 days will be removed from MAPP and will require a $50 reactivation fee, plus back fees to re-enter the herd program.

REGISTRATIONS: Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets.

The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for registration work that is completed through Digital Beef.

The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms are included in this issue and can also be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person.

Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete.

Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.

BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.

DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file.

If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records.

The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org.

Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday.

We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: If you wish to obtain a Maine Angus registration select the MA/Angus box when registering online. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements, please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that AMAA staff can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put

Maine Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine Angus it will be recoded as a Mainetainer.

A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer or Maine Angus.

MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine- Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood.

• The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage.

• Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds.

• A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test.

• A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test.

MAINE ANGUS COLOR REQUIREMENTS: • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color.

White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail.

• Starting Jan. 1, 2019 all animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers..

NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maineanjou.org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.

OBITUARY VINCENT LEE BLAKLEY

Vincent Lee Blakley passed away on November 16, 2019 at the age of 76.

The son of Priscilla Worden and Emmett Blakley was born April 5, 1943 at the Franklin Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma. As a young boy he was raised in the Oologah area, where he attended school until transferring to Claremore as a sophomore so he could be in vocational agriculture as well as FFA. He then served as the State FFA Northeast Vice President 1961-1962. As a Junior and Senior he had a talk show where he discussed various subjects. He was a member of the Claremore graduating class of 1961. Upon graduating Vincent became reacquainted with Nancy Moore. A young girl he met in grade school at 4-H camp. They began dating and married on November 22, 1963. They began their life in agriculture by purchasing his grandfathers farm. In their early years they built the first and largest dry lot dairy operation in Oklahoma.

Vincent was known to be a forward thinker and was always willing to listen to new ideas.

He was a long time member of the Rogers County Fair Board. Vincent along with a dear friend Glen Spafford were founders of the Rogers County Young Stockman’s 4-H Club in the 1960s and is still a club that meets today. In 1989Vincent and others created the Oklahoma Club Calf Association, a youth JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

organization that over the years has provided awards, scholarships and opportunities to thousands of youth in the state of Oklahoma.

Vincent was passionate about showing as a child, but became even more passionate when his children and grandchildren began showing. Every thing Vincent did revolved around the development of agriculture and youth. Throughout the years he has hosted agriculture field days and farm tours to everyone from grade schools to senior citizens from all over the country including foreign countries.

In his later years he received much joy from watching his grandchildren. They showed livestock, played sports, and gave speeches and other FFA activities. He would travel all across the country just to see his grandchildren do what they loved, or to help anyone in need.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Priscilla Worden, and Emmett Blakley.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Blakley, Son Lyle Blakley and wife Rae, Daughter Lynda Runner and Husband Mike, Son Lyndsey Blakley and wife Kali, Extended Family/daughter Amber Spafford, grandchildren Rashele Blakley, Reighly Hendrix and Husband Bailey, Larahmy Blakley, Blake Runner, Bailie Runner, Neecey Blakley, Bram Blakley, Hunter Blakley, Lydia Blakley, and Dakota Hicks. Sister, Carolyn Jordan and Husband Don; brother, Mickey Jo Blakley wife Kay; step-sisters, Darlene Brauner and Gaylyn Haynes and husband Tom along with many nieces and nephews.

OBITUARY WILLIAM “BILLY” THOMAS THORNE William “Billy” Thomas Thorne Jr., 50, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 21, 2019. He was born in Columbia, Missouri, March 23rd, 1969 to Bill and Nina Thorne. Billy married Susan Green on January 9, 1991, in Las Vegas where they started their lifetime of adventures together.

He is survived by his wife Susan Thorne, parents, Bill and Nina Thorne, sister, Kelley Bateman and her husband John Bateman, two nieces, Katie Kneale and her husband John Kneale, and Jordan Bateman.

Billy left this world with more laughter, which is the best cure for anything. Fun is so underrated in the world we live in today. Billy was relentless in chasing his dreams on his own terms and without fear of judgement.

Two of Billy’s great accomplishments were winning the All-Around Award in The Texas Club Calf Association and being named Grand Champion Steer at Houston Livestock Show. He later fulfilled his dreams of being a chef and opened a restaurant with Susan known as the Xtreme Cuisine. He loved fiercely and deeply. Billy had a contagious sense of humor that would fill any room with an overwhelming spirit of joy. He had a heart bigger than his humor. Billy was a member of the Episcopal Church and loved The Lord with all his heart. God’s faithfulness is everlasting, He is here, He is good, He loves us, and He heals. This world is hard and scary, and it is also phenomenal and glorious. Billy cherished his tribe and wanted everyone to win in their own race of life unapologetically. Billy is what the world needs more of: truth, fun, freedom to live your truth, love, and laughter.

A START FOR MAINE-ANJOU

IN THE DAIRY-BEEF SECTOR

BY JOSH CRIBBS, AMAA COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR In the cattle industry as an association – regardless of breed beliefs or alliances to certain breed agendas – all we can ever hope for the breed we provide service for is the cattle find versatility and profit to sustain the operation in which they are used. Knowing that not all breeds are suited for different environments, it’s tough to be everything to everyone. To be honest it’s naive to think that any cattle breed can cover all facets of the beef industry!

There are sectors, however, that MaineAnjou genetics can make a sizable impact and be a strong benefit to the bottom line for those who want to add power and balance on the fat cattle grid.

This is never more obvious than with a group and operation settled west of Lubbock, Texas in the little town of JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

Muleshoe. The only town in the county of Bailey, with a population of 5,082 – in an area where the Friday Night Lights of high school football are king – sits a family operation built from scratch into a business that makes a sizable impact in the dairy industry and has started to create a niche market in the dairy beef industry using Maine-Anjou genetics.

Although the story of Boehning Dairy starts with Brian, the patriarch and founder of the family owned and operated farm, it’s entrance into the dairy beef industry began around 2014 when Brian hired Chief Financial Officer and Maine-Anjou enthusiast, Jimmy Black. Jimmy grew up in Clovis, New Mexico on his family farm and attended Colorado State University where he received a degree in animal

science before starting his career in the financial sector and Ag lending business that spanned a 37-year career near Bakersfield, California.

Upon retirement and moving back to Clovis, he went to work for a company that handled organic grain and started to sell Ag commodities to a growing west Texas population of dairy farms that were carving out their market share and helping to build consistency in a product that was filling the shelf at your local grocery store. After a few years, he transitioned to becoming part of the team at Boehning Group, and that is where our story of how Maine-Anjou genetics and them becoming apart of the business begins.

Jimmy, a Maine-Anjou breeder himself in past years and knowing the beef

industry and the strength of Maine genetics, approached Brian about breeding Holstein cows to Maine-Anjou bulls to create a group of F1 replacement heifers that they could use to diversify the operation. Jimmy shared how the group of cows they are currently running came to be is through the fourth service via Artificial Insemination (AI). One of the most important things that Jimmy said is that the Dairy industry success is dependent on those cows getting bred and keeping them in lactation. He said that they see increased conception on beef semen versus dairy semen. Every cow on the dairy gets bred three times AI in succession to Holstein bulls, and on the fourth is bred to Purebred Maine -Anjou bulls. “The long and short of it is that the dairy wanted to try and minimize the loss they were seeing with the production of straight Holstein calves” said Jimmy. He said that those cattle get fed and merchandised through the feedlot sector and sold on a grid that rewards premiums.

The first time they executed the Maine-Anjou, Holstein cross, they kept 300 half-blood cows that they use to tool replacements out of for commercial breeders to purchase. Those half-blood cows get bred multiple ways, including back to Maine genetics, in hopes to balance power, performance, and milking ability to the ¼ blood Holsteins.

10 percent of their fed cattle each year are dairy beef. With birth weights in

the 60’s and mature cow size at 1,400 pounds, they make the perfectly tooled cow for an environment that most would not believe to be productive grazing lands from the outside looking in.

The most unique aspect of the business is the attention to detail and their management of the operation on a daily business. So many times operations with scope get scrutinized, but it is in operations such as this all across the Ag industry that make a sizable impact in our nation’s food supply. The Boehning Group’s attention to wildlife management and refuge is tremendous and speaks volumes for their understanding of leaving the wildlife environment intact and thriving. They have a very extensive understanding of how to manage their waste and manure and put it back into the ecosystem so that it helps to create a thriving environment for the wildlife they are surrounded by.

The biggest attention to detail is with regards to their management of the water resources they have and making sure that they properly reduce water and over usage by reducing pump size and making sure they don’t overextend their use at times of need. The annual rainfall for their area is around 18 inches so they are sure to make everything count.

Jimmy says that Brian and the family are dedicated to the management of the land and make certain that the practices they use are sustainable for years to

come.

The biggest questions of how MaineAnjou genetics will perform from a commercial sector standpoint is what the cutout value of the fed progeny will be and can Maine cattle do what Simmental, Limousin or Angus not do, and that is balance the grid.

According to a set of data that Jimmy and the Boehning Family supplied, a group they fed and slaughtered had some extremely promising results. The group killed 12 percent Prime and 66 percent Choice for a total of 78 perfect Choice or better. With Quality Grade results that strong, it would question if there would be Yield Grade concerns. In fact, these cattle stayed far away from the national averages. They saw zero discounts on the rail for Yield Grade, in fact there were no YG 4s or YG 5s in the group – only confirming the things that Maine-Anjou breeders know to be true. That it is a fact Maine bulls add muscle without removing Quality Grade and there is some true value in that in today’s beef industry.

To bring things into perspective from year 2000 to 2016, there has been a swing in hide color by 15 percent in favor of more Holstein influenced cattle flooding into the slaughter cattle market.

That increase in numbers and shift in percentage is a market signal that the total cattle numbers relative to breed is shifting, and the dairy industry is gathering numbers and carving out a portion of the beef eating consumer.

To adapt and drive hide color back into favor there is going to be a growing demand to inject beef cattle into the dairy industry. It’s a sector the MaineAnjou breed can make a strong impact in. Maine bulls bring Holsteins back into the area of acceptable mature cow size, which should aid more than anything in carcass weight, but also more importantly carcass length. Creating market share within the fed cattle industry is key to driving demand for our brand and the Maine-Anjou breed.

Jimmy finished the afternoon by stating that the operation will continue to create and feed Maine-Anjou dairy beef cattle to reduce the loss seen when feeding all dairy-influenced cattle. He looks forward to continued years of success on the rail with Maine-Anjou and is certain they will only continue to accomplish what he thought would happen when he first moved that direction in 2015.

WHITNEY WALKER LEADERSHIP CHAIRMAN

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that all of y’all had a very Happy Holiday Season, and with the turn of the New Year, we are all anticipating the start of the National Western Stock Show in Denver and the exciting new updates to the yards! My name is Whitney Walker and I am in my second term on the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) Board, serving as one of your Region 1 Directors and Leadership Chairman. I am from Prairie Grove, Ark.; where my parents, Eric and Linsay Walker, raised my brother, Mason, and sister ,Catelyn, on our family ranch where we run 600 head of Maineinfluenced and Simmental cattle. I am now a freshman at Oklahoma State University, studying Agricultural Business and Agricultural Leadership. Although all three of us kids grew up showing cattle, we have found our passions in different areas as we’ve gotten older, where Mason enjoys the goat industry, I still love the cattle industry more than anything, and Catelyn was a trailblazer and dove into working cow horse competitions!

No matter where we all spend our time, all three of us would tell anyone that the Maine-Anjou breed will always be the place we come back to!

This past November, the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) had the honor of holding our 50th Anniversary show at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. The days were long while working the ring; but, the quality of livestock and friendliness of the exhibitors that came through the ring made it so worth it. From the High Maine show to the MaineTainers, there were so many high quality cattle that any MaineAnjou breeder would be proud to stand behind! That same weekend, we held our annual meeting, where we got to hear from Mr. Mark Core of Iowa and finding our “True North”, we honored Kenny and Audrey Bremer of K&A Farms with the Heritage Road Hall of Fame Award, and celebrated the progressive growth of our breed!

We hope to see each and every one of you in Denver and Fort Worth in the next

few weeks. Along with the upcoming shows, don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 31 - June 3rd for our National Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC) for our junior members in Kansas City, Mo. This is an event that Lindsey and our junior board have been wanting to re-initiate and we are all so excited for this year and we hope that all you kids and parents are too! You won’t want to miss out on the chance to learn, grow and make lifelong friendships. We wish everyone a safe trip to Denver and we’ll see you there!

It’s that time of the year. Summer has come and gone, the calves are weaned or about there and we’re selecting our spring sale prospects, replacement heifers and potential show strings. Well, guess what else this time of the year means? The Neogen laboratory in Lincoln, NE is entering their busiest season too. Thousands of sample submissions are arriving each day and customer expectations are running wild. The goal of this article is to provide insight and realistic perspective which will set you up for DNA testing success. When it comes to DNA testing, the earlier we can start, the more we ensure your ability to capture the full value of testing you have paid for, which is the main goal for all producers. Below we are going to outline the simple steps each breeder can follow to submit your DNA samples and receive results on time, setting yourself up for triumph instead of despair and frustration.

The most critical part of submitting DNA is to set up expectations based upon facts, especially if you’re operating with a deadline looming such as a sale or show. There’s brutal honesty outlined within the steps below when it comes to expectations surrounding DNA turnaround and to be frank, adjustments will need to be made on your calendar based upon these timelines. Let’s say you absolutely need results in hand by March 6, 2020 so you can sale your animal’s in April and all AMAA submission instructions are followed, you should submit the samples for testing no later than January 7th. An even more optimal time frame would be sending in samples by December 24th, allowing some extra time, especially to account for the holiday rush and aftermath.

With DNA it’s best to start early and give all areas of this wheel extra time cushion and save yourself and others unnecessary stress. Outlined below is each step translated to expected business days and turn around.

STEP 1 – It is highly encouraged to mail

samples in a way where you are supplied with a tracking number. In my opinion it is worth the $8-$20 to have peace of mind, especially since you’ve already invested time, energy and expense in to collecting the samples. Typical mailing time can vary from 1-10 days depending on shipping method.

STEP 2 – As long as your samples arrive with the proper AMAA paperwork, they typically go in to test within 3-7 business days, depending on sample volume being received at the lab and varies depending on the time of year. The lab is extremely busy October-March so plan on the seven business days for this step, just to be safe.

STEP 4 – AMAA downloads the results in to their database and reports them to the breeder. This process and timeline is dependent upon AMAA workload but it’s safe to assume three business days with regards to this calendar planning.

Step 5 – AMAA runs two genetic evaluations each year. One in the spring and fall. If you submit a DNA genomic test prior to the data being pulled for the genetic evaluation then once updated EPD’s are published your animal’s records will reflect DNA enhanced EPD’s. In between evaluations your animal will have interim EPD’s assigned until the next evaluation is completed. This step is not included in the timeline below since it occurs twice a year.

STEP 3 – DNA is being run on the samples

Given the above steps, it could take 4-6 weeks and results are reported electronically to from the time a breeder submits their samples to AMAA via our Lab Information Management the lab for them to receive DNA results back from Software (LIMS). Typically, from the time a the Association. may be three samples you’ll need to re-collect and submit through testing again. If you are ahead of the game and start early, there’s still time to get the resubmits completed prior to your final deadline.

It’s important to note there is not a way to expedite DNA testing or magically make the results appear so there’s no room for procrastination or excuses for being late. My best recommendation is to make sure you follow your Association’s DNA instructions closely, gather samples using proper collection techniques and start early, this is the ultimate recipe for success. It is advised for breeders to implement a DNA testing calendar that works for your operation and do your best to stick to it. You may end up testing a few more animal’s than needed by doing it early but the payoff from having all the information is well worth it. Keep in mind, DNA testing is an important investment in the future of the genetics for your operation and that of your customers. There’s too much riding on the results arriving in time to throw a hail Mary or be found crossing your fingers a week before the sale or show. The time to get started testing your spring sale animals, replacement heifers and show prospects is NOW. So the moral of the entire story is, please don’t delay, go out collect those DNA samples and get them mailed to Neogen with proper paperwork TODAY!

MAINE ANGUS WHAT IS MAINE ANGUS?

The Maine Angus program is an initiative created by the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) to showcase the complementation of Maine-Anjou genetics when crossed with Angus or Red Angus cattle.

This program will reveal Maine-Anjou cattle’s ability to enhance feed efficiency and red meat yield when placed on British based genetics.

This program should provide seedstock that will increase production and carcass yield through heterosis.

The name Maine Angus is both strong and informative by stating exactly what breeds are present in said animal.

The standard requirement is that both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA). This will provide confirmed lineage and genetic information along with valuable EPDs. Through a partnership with the AAA our EPDs will be updated with the latest genetic evaluation by the AAA which will provide the breeders and customers the best genetic prediction available. This program is focused on producing quality registered offspring that will JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

aid in the incorporation of Maine-Anjou genetics into the mainstream of the USA beef sector.

PROGRAM STANDARDS

Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine-Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood.

• Both parents must be registered at the AMAA, AAA or RAAA to confirm lineage.

• Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds.

• A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA

and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test.

• A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test.

MAINE ANGUS COLOR STANDARDS

All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. Feet and legs must be solid black or red.

• NOTE: All Maine Angus animals that do not meet the color requirment, but were registered prior to Jan. 1, 2019, will retain their Maine Angus papers. They will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, but are still eligible to show as MaineTainers.

• If an animal is registered Maine Angus, but is found to not meet the color requirements, they will be reverted to a MaineTainer registration.
