From the North, South or West, take the I-81 exit for Route 30 East at Chambersburg toward Gettysburg. After crossing over South Mountain, look for road signs directing you to “Land of Little Horses” and “KOA Campground”. These signs will alert you to the right hand turn from Route 30 onto Knoxlyn Road. After making the turn onto Knoxlyn Road, our farm lane entrance will be 1.4 miles on the right. As the host farm for the Annual Gettysburg Stars and Stripes Sale, Barbara and I wish a sincere welcome to friends and prospective buyers to the 6th Annual Sale. Once again, the Stars and Stripes Sale Group of breeders, have brought in superior Simmental genetics for your consideration. As in previous years, sale cattle will be placed in open lots here on the farm prior to sale. They will be sorted by kind, relaxed and grazing so you can view them in their natural state. The sale consignors and breeders will be available throughout the day on Friday May 3rd and Saturday May 4th to answer any questions you might have. While you are at the farm on Friday afternoon viewing the cattle, plan on staying for some late afternoon/ early evening refreshments with the consignors and buyers. We highly encourage you to call and make your reservations early as this sale occurs at the start of the Gettysburg tourist season. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Gettysburg Stars and Stripes sale. The sale will be held in the historic town of Gettysburg, PA. The sale host Tom and Barbara Vossler along with a great group of breeders have assembled a star spangled offering of genetics. The sale last year was a big success with cattle selling to 22 different states and Canada with the customer approval rating high. Also, those in attendance had a great time so it will be worth the drive to Gettysburg. Over the past years many breeders have commented on the sale, the people and the beautiful setting of the historic town of Gettysburg. Dont forget this year the celebration has already started with the 150th year anniversary of the Battle at Gettysburg. The sale being the first Saturday in May the Stars and Stripes group of breeders are able to offer more bred cows and pairs. Celebrating the
Battle of Gettysburg Gettysburg – A name widely
known in U.S. and World history. In the third year of the American Civil War, 90,000 Northern soldiers and 75,000 Southern soldiers, 72,000 horses and mules and the crews of over 600 cannon met in mortal combat in three days of battle. This was the largest battle ever conducted on the North American continent, one of the pivotal battles in the American Civil War and a defining moment in the history of the United States of America. While there was some fighting in the town of Gettysburg, population 2,400 citizens, most of the battle was fought on about 6,000 acres of agricultural land comprising thirty-eight separate farms surrounding the town. During the course of the battle many of these farms were severely damaged if not outright destroyed. While the Confederate invasion of the north was turned back by the Union victory at Gettysburg, not all was lost for the Confederacy in the overall campaign. During the nearly four weeks the Confederate Army spent north of the Potomac River among the highly productive farms of Maryland and Pennsylvania, Confederate soldiers “liberated” nearly 24,000 head of cattle, 22,000 head of sheep, and thousands of hogs from the northern farms and drove the livestock south of the Potomac River into Virginia. Celebrating the Battle of Gettysburg
T
his year marks the 150th anniversary of the battle and celebrations of the anniversary period are already underway. Four million visitors are expected in Gettysburg between Memorial Day and Labor Day to participate in anniversary activities. This number is comparable to the 1.6 to 1.8 million visitors who come to Gettysburg in a “normal” year. To help celebrate the famous battle here, the Gettysburg Stars and Stripes Sale consignors offer Our Gettysburg Connection.
Mountain View Farm – Tom and Barbara Vossler • 717-337-1615 or 717-752-6823 – Mountain View Farm sits less than two miles from the battlefield. The Vossler’s purchased the property in 1999 and then built-up the present farm. At the time of the battle a small dairy was operating on the land. While there was no actual fighting on the farm during the battle, it is likely Confederate soldiers “liberated” livestock, food and forage from the property as it was behind Confederate lines for the three days of the battle. Tom and Barbara grew up in Allegany County, New York. Three of Tom’s ancestors fought in the Union Army during the war. His great-great uncle, Captain Henry Fuller, was killed in action in “the Wheatfield” of the Rose Farm at Gettysburg on the second day of the battle. A great-great grandfather and another great-great uncle survived the war and returned to their farms and families in western New York State once the war ended. Barbara’s great-great grandfather, John James Speed Lee, left Fairfax County, Virginia as a young man and settled in Allegany County, New York prior to the start of the Civil War. He was a first cousin of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. CLO Simmentals – Cliff and Lynn Orley • 717-964-2243 or 717-269-0128 – Cliff and Lynn’s farm is in Lebanon County Pennsylvania near Hershey. Cliff grew up in Summit County, Ohio. The 29th Ohio Infantry Regiment was recruited in part in Summit County and mustered into service in August, 1861. The 29th saw action on Culp’s Hill, part of the Culp farm, on the second and third day of the battle. They suffered 7 killed, 31 wounded of the 315 men engaged at Gettysburg. Lynn grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, not far from their current farm. The 99th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was recruited in Philadelphia and in Lancaster County. The 99th saw action along the Emmitsburg Road, between the Trostle and Sherfey farms during the second day of the battle. They incurred 18 killed, 81 wounded and 11 missing of their 277 soldiers engaged in battle at Gettysburg. Rocky Hollow Simmentals – Tommy and Tina Cline – Wythe County, Virginia • 276-620-8448 – Virginia was one of eleven states to join the Confederacy but in fact did not secede from the Union until after the war had started. Virginia was well represented at Gettysburg with 20,776 men in the ranks of whom 1,012 were killed, 2,373 wounded, and 1,415 missing or captured for an overall casualty rate of 23.1%, or nearly one of every four men Tina’s ancestor Captain John W. Jones fought for the Confederacy and participated in the Gettysburg battle. Buena Vista Simmentals – Jim and Betty Bosley – Hardy County, West Virginia • 304-530-6636 – When Virginia seceded from the Union, the people of Northwestern Virginia objected by seceding from Virginia, established their own state government and applied for U.S. statehood. On June 20th, 1863, ten days before the start of the Gettysburg battle, West Virginia was admitted to the Union. The 7th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was raised in part in Hardy County in the latter half of 1861 and fought in the Union Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg. Of their 319 men who saw action, five were killed, forty-one were wounded and one turned-up missing in action. Next door to Jim and Betty’s farm is “Willow Wall”, the home place of Confederate Captain John Hanson McNeill, a partisan ranger and commander of Company E, 18th Virginia cavalry. McNeill did not survive the war. Kevin and Ward Bishop – Salem County, New Jersey • 856-358-3923 or 856-297-3813 – The 12th New Jersey Infantry Regiment was organized in September 1862. Members of the unit included men from Salem County. The 12th saw action on the 2nd and 3rd day at Gettysburg mainly in attacks in and around the Bliss Farm located between Cemetery Ridge and Seminary Ridge. Of the 532 members of the 12th New Jersey engaged in the battle, 23 were killed, 83 wounded and 9 were missing in action. Anvil Acres – Earl and Brenda Griffith – Washington County, Maryland • 301-432-8911 – Maryland was one of four “border states” in the war, that is, a slave-holding state on the border between the Confederate south and the Union north which chose not to secede from the Union. The border states, where loyalties (and families) were split, provided troops to both sides. Within a few miles of Earl’s and Brenda’s farm near Boonsboro, the Battle of Antietam (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg) was fought on September 19th, 1862. The Antietam battle is notable in American Civil War history as the bloodiest single day in the war where the two opposing sides combined for over 4,800 killed, 18,500 wounded and over 2,700 missing in action. Lady Bug Farm – Ken and Mary Gumaer – Niagara County, New York. • 716-735-7904 – The 8th New York Cavalry Regiment was recruited and organized in the fall of 1861. Men from Niagara County were part of this unit. The 8th New York troopers were among the first of the Union soldiers to become engaged against advancing Confederate troops in the early morning hours of the first day of the battle. Of the 623 members of the 8th engaged in the battle, two were killed, twenty-two wounded and sixteen were missing in action. JEH Simmentals – Jack Herr – Lebanon County, Pennsylvania • 717-507-8342 – The 149th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was organized in August, 1862 in part from men recruited in Lebanon County. The 149th saw significant action on the first day of the battle at the McPherson Farm where their stalwart hasty defense attempted to stop the Confederate advance. Although they slowed the Confederate advance they could not stop it and the 149th retreated through the town to Cemetery Hill. Of the 450 members of the 149th engaged at Gettysburg, 53 were killed, 172 wounded and 111 missing or captured. Folly Farm – Bill and Kathy Lay – Harford County, Maryland • 410-679-0882 – The 1st Maryland Battalion was a Confederate infantry unit recruited largely in Baltimore, just down the road from Bill and Kathy’s farm. The unit saw significant action on the Culp Farm in its attempts to capture the Union defensive position on Culp’s Hill on the second and third day of the battle. Of the 400 men in the 1st Maryland, 56 were killed, 118 wounded and 15 missing or captured for a nearly 50% casualty rate. Pond View Farm – Rick, Debbie and Shane Smithson – Harford County, Maryland • 443-463-4641 – A Union cavalry regiment organized in Harford County in the fall of 1861 was Company A, Purnell Legion Maryland Cavalry. The unit saw action on the third day of the battle near the Rummel Farm (today’s East Cavalry Field). This was the only engagement during the battle which featured opposing mounted cavalry units. They suffered no casualties in their brief engagement with Confederate J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalrymen Hudson Pines Farm – David Rockefeller and Miranda Kaiser – Westchester County, New York • 914-631-1154 or 815499-0522 – The 95th New York Infantry Regiment was organized over the winter of 1861-62 with men recruited in New York City, and Westchester and Rockland counties. The regiment saw action on the McPherson Farm on the first day of the battle and gained fame for its charge, along with the 6th Wisconsin and 14th Brooklyn regiments, at the unfinished railroad cut against a Mississippi brigade commanded by Brigadier General Joseph Davis, nephew of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The 261 men of the 95th New York suffered 7 killed, 62 wounded and 46 men missing or captured. Simme Valley Ranch – Jeanne White – Cayuga County, New York • 607-423-4888 – Jeanne was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Battery A / 1st Rhode Island Artillery was organized over the summer of 1861. The unit of 6 cannon and 139 men saw action at Gettysburg on the second and third day of the battle and played a major role in the repulse of the Confederate attack known in popular history as “Pickett’s Charge”. Battery A (Arnold’s Battery) suffered 3 killed, 28 wounded and 1 missing in action. Stewart’s Simmental Cattle – Greg, Grady and Sam Stewart – Jefferson County, Pennsylvania • 717-350-5235 – Although Greg and Grady currently live in Dauphin County, Greg was born and raised in Jefferson County where his dad still lives. The 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was organized in part from men recruited from Jefferson County. The 62nd saw action on the second day of the battle in “the bloody wheat-field” of the Rose Farm. Of the 426 men of the 62nd Pennsylvania engaged in the battle, 28 were killed, 107 wounded and 40 became missing in action or captured. Campbell Show Calves – Jamie and Jackie Campbell – Greene County, Pennsylvania • 724-263-0955 – The 140th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was recruited in Greene and adjoining counties and entered service in the fall of 1862. The regiment was ordered as reinforcing troops into “the Bloody Wheat-field” of the Rose Farm on the second day of the battle where the majority of their casualties occurred. They also fought on the third day of the battle. The 140th Pennsylvania went into battle with 515 men in the ranks of whom 37 were killed, 144 wounded and 60 missing or captured.

In Remembrance August 10, 1947 to October 21, 2012 Ken and Jeanne White have been a major part of the Simmental family of breeders in the Northeastern United States for many years. Whether they came to a cattle sale or cattle show, they always brought great, functional cattle. Ken White was a man who will be remembered for many attributes. The infectious smile was one of the first things you would notice. When he smiled, shook your hand and said he was glad to see you, you knew very well that he meant every word of it. Ken always had a positive outlook on any situation. Not one to grumble or complain, he always looked on the bright side in even the most difficult of situations. This was true even in the last weeks of his life. Ken was always one of the first to step up and lend a hand in any task that needed to be done and there were so many things that he could do well. We are fortunate to have known Ken White and proud to have called him our friend. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Complimentary guided tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield on Friday, May 3 rd & Sunday, May 5 th Gettysburg. A name widely known in U.S. and World history. In the third year of the American Civil War, 90,000 Northern soldiers, 70,000 Southern soldiers, 72,000 horses and mules, over 600 cannon, met in mortal combat in three days of battle. This was the largest battle ever conducted on the North American continent. The battle was conducted over 6,000 acres of approximately 38 separate farms surrounding the town of Gettysburg. Mountain View Farm, host farm for the Gettysburg Stars and Stripes Sale, sits less than two miles from the battlefield. The Stars and Stripes Sales Group is pleased to offer a complimentary tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield as part of this year’s sale. Tour leaders this year are Dr. Carol Reardon of Penn State University and Colonel Tom Vossler, host for the sale. Carol and Tom are both military historians who specialize in history of the American Civil War. They recently completed their book on the Battle at Gettysburg entitled A Field Guide to Gettysburg. The book will be released for sale by the University of North Carolina Press in June and may be preordered now. The tour Tom and Carol will lead will include a lot of what is in their book.
