Indianola Chamber of Commerce A Letter from the Chamber President

Vision Statement

I am so excited about what’s taking place with the Indianola Chamber of Commerce!

To create a business and community partnership through collaboration and celebration which establishes Indianola as an exciting, profitable and livable community.

Our board identified what you think it really means to be a Chamber.

We listened to all of you and we’ve discovered residents look to us to help our member businesses effectively do business here and to showcase what a great community we have to those who live here, visit here and do business here.

Our programs and events educate and inform our business owners, giving them the tools and resources they need to be successful here, opportunities to partner with each other, and occasions to highlight services and talents. The latest tool we’re excited about to help with this is the new and improved website launched earlier this year, and a smartphone application so anyone can use the site and all its resources from anywhere.

Because Indianola is such a vibrant community, full of events, including many held on The Square, we’re thrilled to announce our offices are moving onto The Square. This will give us the opportunity to be “closer to the action” and be easily accessible to visitors and tourists.

This space also will give us the chance to collaborate more easily with Warren County Economic Development and the Downtown Merchants Association, as well as help our member businesses by providing greater access to brochures and business and tourism spotlights.

Plans and directs the activities of the fire department and ambulance service, including establishing a fire prevention program, inspecting buildings and premises, overseeing emergency response and protecting life and property from fires.

The goal of the Indianola Street Department is to make the city’s transportation system safe and free of any type of debris. It maintains pavement for all public right-of-ways, city-owned parking lots, sidewalks, and nearly 90 miles of streets.

The human resources department recruits employees, administers employee benefits and oversees supervision of risk management functions such as workers’ compensation and liability.

IMU Electric System The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) electric department was established in May 1890 to provide electric service to the residents of Indianola. The electric utility is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees. IMU serves the electric requirements of the citizens of Indianola located within its established territorial boundaries.

The Indianola Public Library promotes life-long learning and enjoyment with free and equal access to information, educational and recreational resources for the entire community. The library director oversees all library activities subject to the general library board of trustees and municipal restrictions.

The Community Development Department safeguards the health, property and public welfare through the regulated and orderly development of land and land uses within the city of Indianola.

It protects life and property from all hazards subject to structure design, construction, occupancy, repair, removal or demolition. The Community Development Department also enforces the city zoning ordinances.

IMU purchases energy on a wholesale basis but is equipped to provide 47.5MW of electricity with local generating units. Two substations and a loop-feed transmission system provide customers with a redundant supply of power. IMU currently serves 6,300 electric meters with average annual sales of 116,430,000 kWh’s.

The current annual peak demand for Indianola is 34.07MW. IMU also offers a variety of energy efficiency incentives for qualifying customers. Please go to www.i-m-u.com for a list of available programs.

IMU Water System The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) water department was established in 1905 and is governed by the same five-member Board of Trustees as the electric department.

Indianola’s water is supplied by four deep-water wells that extend approximately 2,600 feet down into the Jordan Aquifer. The IMU water department is responsible for maintaining 90 miles of water mains, 675 fire hydrants and 1,500 valves in the Indianola distribution system. Indianola’s raw and finished water data is available on our web site at www.i-m-u.com.

IMU Network Services Indianola Municipal Utilities offers access to telephone, internet, video and other network services via a fiber optic network connected directly to the customers’ premise. IMU’s open access fiber system allows private service providers to deliver secure, reliable service with virtually unlimited bandwidth. IMU is also able to tailor network uses of dedicated dark fiber and redundancy solutions to customers’ specifications.

The Center and Park feature miles of trails, fishing, prairie plantings, a butterfly garden, a small reading/bird watching room, a full kitchen, a classroom, large deck and displays on two levels.

Banner Lakes is a state park offering family-oriented fun with everything from cold weather trout fishing to a 3-level mountain bike trail and a public shooting range.

Barker Park

Barker Park features a playground, picnic tables with seating for 18, a ball field and half basketball court.

Buxton Park

Community trails A series of intersecting trails appropriate for walking and biking connect the community and beyond. They include the McVay Trail, 1.6 miles from trail head on E. Fifth St. to Pickard Park. It also connects to Carlisle through Summerset Park, a distance of 11 miles. The 1.0 mile Jerry Kelley Trail connects Memorial Park to the Summerset Trail.

Pickard Park also has walking and hiking trails.

Dayton Park

Dayton features a half-basketball court, picnic and playground area and ball field.

DeNelsky Park

This unique park features natural woodlands, open spaces and native grasses and flowers, which provides environmental and wildlife appreciation and education opportunities, in addition to serving as a neighborhood park with picnic tables and a grill. Take the half mile cell phone tour along a level, mowed grass path to learn about the park’s flora and fauna.

Downey Memorial/DOG Park

Downey Memorial Park is home to the off-leash dog playground.

Fenced areas allow large and small dogs to run and play off-leash.

McCord is home to a sand volleyball court, half basketball court, playground, trails and shelter, as well as picnic tables with seating for 72.

Memorial Park and Aquatic Center

Memorial Park has a large shelter and grills, playground, picnic tables with seating for 96, an amphitheater and skate park. The park neighbors the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

Moats Park

N. Jefferson Way (Hwy. 65/69) and Girard Ave., 4 acres

Moats Park offers a softball field, playground, the Christopher M. Street Memorial Basketball Courts, as well as a shelter and seating for 72.

Pickard Park

2 miles East of Hwy. 65/69 on Hwy. 92, 160 acres

Pickard Park is a haven for outdoor activities, with two playgrounds, a half basketball court, 18-hole disc golf course, camping, hiking and picnic areas and a shelter with grilling space. The park also features two softball complexes and 10 horseshoe courts.

Attractions Des Moines Metro Opera Des Moines Metro Opera is a summer festival of opera that has grown far beyond that title. National Balloon Museum The National Balloon Museum dedicates itself to providing the public with a comprehensive understanding of ballooning and its history through its exhibitions and collections. The museum archives more than 200 years of ballooning, hosts 24,000 visitors a year (with 20 countries in attendance) and operates on more than 2,000 volunteer hours annually. Admission to the museum is free. Donations are accepted. The National Balloon Museum is a volunteer organization and is operated solely on donations and free-will offerings.

National Balloon Classic For more than 40 years Indianola and Warren County have hosted a hot air balloon festival. If you haven’t been to the Classic, now is a good time to start, and if you have been joining us for years, we hope you will continue.

Warren County Historical Society The Warren County Historical Society was created to collect, preserve and inspire interest in the history of Warren County. Among the displays are a one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1917, a replica of a pioneer church, a Quaker meeting house and others. The genealogical library is open by appointment.
