President’s Report Fall is almost here and harvest is humming! I hope you have all had an amazing summer blessed with good grass and calves who push the scale down. We enjoyed a very good Annual General Meeting in Wyoming, ON on the August long weekend. Some important business was discussed and the opportunity for some farm tours to look at some great Maine-Anjou and Maine influenced cattle. Thank you to the Ontario association for putting on a great weekend.
Maine-Anjou females in Canada will be offered through mulitple sales across Canada. The cattle industry certainly needs this boost in sales. I certainly look forward to visiting with you this fall at one of these sales or at Agribition. Feel free to give me a call to discuss our great breed of cattle or anything else that is on your mind. OFFICE MAnager’s Report Hello Everyone! Wow, I can not believe that summer is gone and we have our Summer edition of the Maine Mail out. I hope everyone had a great summer and that your weather was good!
Epd’s were on the agenda at the AGM and we are working on getting pricing so we can move forward to add this information to our registry.
The Annual General meeting was held in Wyoming, Ontario and I hope that everyone that attended had a good time. I am sure it was wonderful to get together with all the members of the Maine-Anjou Association and have some laughs and get caught up on news. I would like to thank the Ontario Association for the hospitality on behalf of the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association.

Alberta Association News
Westerner Days in Red Deer was the site for the first Canadian Junior Maine Anjou show. Juniors were given the opportunity to showcase their skills in judging, grooming, sales talk, photography, print marketing, and the livestock quiz. Thank you to the sponsors, Westerner Days, Canadian Maine Association, and Alberta Junior Association for working together to get the Canadian junior show up and going. Thank you to Della and Piper Whelan for the extra attention they spend on the skills portion and younger members. Our Alberta General Meeting took place at Westerner days following the Maine Anjou show. This years Jack Lee Memorial Award for the Maine booster went to Shannon Maines and the Commercial Cattleman of the year was given to Grant and Audrey Gaschnitz. The hilight of our meeting was a walk down memory lane led by Lyle Taylor. This was a great opportunity for many of the new and younger breeders to learn about the history of Maine Cattle. Thanks Lyle. The Alberta association continues to place 4-H as one of our highest priorities. Thank you to Della Whelan for all the time spent ensuring every 4-H member with a Maine Anjou calf gets recognized. Our most recent report with clubs still to report had 30 clubs with 102 Maine projects. 6 champion steers, 7 reserve, 6 champion females, 5 reserves. So if my math is correct, and yes I used a calculator, 24% of the Maine calves used for 4-H were champions! Be sure and give those kids showing Maine calves a pat on the back when you see them. Send us your 4-H pictures and we will get them up on the website. Our new website will be up and running by fall. Check it out @ www.albertamaine-anjou.com. Plan to attend Farmfair International this fall in Edmonton. This is the 40th anniversary for Farmfair with many national breed shows planned. The Maine Anjou show is scheduled for November 6th at noon. I look forward to a great fall for the beef industry and Maine cattle. Good luck to everyone with their fall sales and shows. Maine-Anjou in Manitoba had a fairly successful year. There were a number of 4-H kids that had very successful campaigns with their Maine calves. We would like to congratulate those 4-H members who showed Maine calves. In December, Wilkinridge Stock Farms had a female sale sending cattle to 4 provinces and North Dakota. This was the largest sale of purebred Maine-Anjou cattle in Canada in several years. We held our Annual General Meeting in January in Brandon, MB. The weather is always so nice in Brandon in January. We planned our advertising program for the coming year as well as other business. Election of officers saw them remaining the same with Sid Wilkinson - President, Myron Lees -Vice President, Connie Johnson - Secretary, and Sandi Underhill - Minister of Finance. Douglas Test Station had several Maine bulls from Doug Kerr. The bulls did well on test but the sale was disappointing. Wilkinridge Stock Farms had a successful bull sale in April selling both Maine-Anjou and Red Angus bulls. Other breeders also reported having successful bull sales from their homes. Every year we gain more new buyers for Maine bulls. We hope you have a successful AGM in Ontario and would like to invite you to Manitoba for the AGM in 2014. CMAA Annual General Meeting - Wyoming, ON
WOW....what a great weekend in Wyoming, Ontario! The Maine-Anjou breeders who attended the AGM weekend found out about Ontario hospitality. If anyone went home hungry it was there own fault.
On Sunday, the tours of local breeders started early in the morning. This was to get the blood pumping for those that socialized with fellow breeders into the wee hours of the night.
The weekend started on Friday, August 2 with a hospitality evening in the bar at the Forest Golf & Country Club where everyone enjoyed some local singing talent. The board of directors had a meeting to discuss business in the meeting room.
Phillips Cattle Co, Mark and Kerri Phillips of Denfield, ON, hosted everyone for breakfast. After breakfast, there was a wagon tour to the Denfield Stockyards and Auction Barn and a pasture tour of their cattle. Crawford Farms, John and Corey Crawford of Glencoe, ON. hosted everyone for lunch. There was a fine display of their show cattle and there were speakers from Kenpal Feed, Cangrow Crop Solutions, and more speakers and displays. Then there was a tour of their facilities and their operation. A pasture tour of their cows and calves was also given by the Crawfords. The tour then moved back to Wyoming to tour K-Rod Kattle, where Kody Roddick showed his cattle and his operation. The cow tour continued across the road to Nordick Maine Anjou. Murray and Norma Preece showed their cattle and facilities. The tour then continued down the road to “Joe’s Saloon” where we enjoyed the ambiance of the barn saloon and socializing with our fellow breeders. We were fed a delicious BBQ and treats by Kody, Murray and Norma.
On Saturday, the CMAA AGM was held at the PlymptonWyoming Agricultural Society’s banquet hall. The meeting commenced in the morning with homemade muffins, loaves and coffee. The meeting carried on until lunch was served at noon. A fulfilling lunch was served by the society’s volunteer ladies. One prominent breeder asked “would it be ok it he had seconds as the dessert was to die for”. The meeting continued and many great ideas and decisions were accomplished. One would be the decision to get EPD’s on our great cattle. Three new directors were elected: Kody Roddick, Tracy Wood and Scott McCormack. Thanks to Murray Preece for your hard work and dedication to the CMAA board. That evening there was a delicious roast beef banquet served. After the banquet, we heard from three guest speakers.....one from the CCA, one from the OCA and the Lambton County Cattlemen’s Association and a local breeder, who gave us his rendition of the past and future cattle business. The CCA director was presented with a framed print from the CMAA and the OMAA for their silent auction as their upcoming meeting in London. After the speakers, the many donated silent auction items were concluded and handed out.
Most people returned to their farms on Monday after enjoying a great weekend. A few stayed on to see Niagara Falls. Thanks to all who attended and supported our silent auction. Many thanks to all of our great sponsors for helping out financially and with gifts for the weekend. Also, special thanks to the committee that helped me accomplish such a great weekend.

Style Maines is transitioning out of cattle over this next year. The cows and bred heifers have been sold to Kyle, Larry and Shara Smith and family of Wimborne, Alberta. These animals have been bred to Style Maine bulls for next spring calving. We are excited for the Smiths as they move into raising and selling bulls and heifers and showing their upcoming production. OMAA Provincial Maine-Anjou Online Sale November 27 - 30, 2013 - Cattle In Motion
The Ontario Maine-Anjou Association has made it a priority to have a venue available for individuals to purchase Maine-Anjou cattle this year! We have constructed a committee to develop a successful online sale to be held in late November, 2013. ~ The sale will be held 100% online through Cattle In Motion from November 27th-30th, 2013. ~ All sale entries will be publicized through Cattle In Motion and through the sale committee’s various avenues of publication. ~ All entries will be pictured and/or videoed either at home at their farm or at the Provincial Show in Lindsay. There will be adequate space for 3-4 pictures for each entry to be posted. It should be noted that all picturing and videography should be completed with cattle in clean, tidy condition. ~ Semen and Embryos may also be consigned. ~ Initial estimates of cost will be $200/entry. There will not be any additional deductions of commission. This estimate is based on having 30 total sale entries. A final price point will be calculated once the number of entries has been finalized. PRECONDITIONING - A CO-OPERATIVE EFFORT by Roy Lewis DVM
Preconditioning is a great way to reduce respiratory diseases in the feedlot and keep death loss to a minimum. Of all the calves that die, there are also those that become chronic poor-doers and have to be culled out of the system. This article will review the very good points about preconditioning. The theory has always been wean on the farm where stress is the least and have the calves preimmunized with the initial vaccinations against diseases like IBR, BVD, BRSV, Mannheim, Pasteurella and Histophilus at least two weeks before the weaning date. This theory makes sense and it really does work. We see this every year with producers who maintain ownership of their calves. Often their treatment rate is also very low in spite of in many cases no metaphylactic or prophylactic antibiotics given. Calves are used to the pens, know where the water source is and don’t have to contend with the stresses of transportation and being mixed with calves from multiple owners. All these things wreak havoc on the calves’ immune system. Another must procedure is deworming to remove parasites and alleviate how they tax the calves immune system. In certain conditions vitamins and minerals such as selenium may be administered. Don’t forget the multivalent clostridial vaccination as well. Discuss with your veterinarian the best approach. A lot of producers are upping the ante by having calves immunized in the spring at pasture turnout when they are very young (one month or younger). By boostering vaccines at weaning they are re-stimulating an already primed immune system so good protection to most diseases with this process seems to be the norm. They also develop greater protection when they are stress free on their mothers. Trying to develop initial protection to vaccines while undergoing all the stresses of weaning is not the route to follow. The worse case scenario is adding in stresses of castration and dehorning at the same time, which is what some feedlots do. It is no wonder a lot of these calves get sick in spite of being covered with antibiotics. Fortunately most producers are using polled bulls and castration is often done as very young calves still on the cow. I mentioned a large number of producers keeping their own calves, preimmunizing and weaning as stress free as possible. That means not weaning during snowstorms or inclement weather and preferably having the calves already used to the feed they will be receiving in the form of creep feeding. In these situations death loss can often be kept way below two percent. In fact some top producers will keep it around the half a percent mark. Most of the deaths are more along the lines of bloats or fluky intestinal accident type of conditions. Very few are due to respiratory disease or hemophilus. This is the exact opposite of what we see in the feedlot.

The two mentioned diseases are the highest cause of death and death rates can be around five percent or higher with highly stressed calves. These high death losses will probably not be tolerated by the consuming public in the future. The reality is prevention of disease has more to do with stress free weaning then vaccinating for every disease you can think of. The stress free environment allows the calves’ own immune system to respond to disease challenge. Producers in order to reap some of the benefits of the weaning must wean greater than thirty days. After weaning even at home calves do lose some weight and then start gaining again. The time taken to get back to the weaned weight is minimally two weeks. In order to compensate for that and the extra cost of vaccines and the risk of death, albeit low, farmers must be compensated adequately for their efforts by a premium price. From the feedlot perspective the vaccination protocols are not all exactly the same and in many cases calves are not implanted so feedlots still have to run the calves through again and implant, lot tag etc . Where I have seen this work is contracts between feedlots and larger cow-calf producers. The producer vaccinates with exactly what the feedlot wants in terms of protection from certain diseases. The weaning time is set and the time to weigh and shrink is agreed upon ahead of time. This way the farmer is compensated for his time, expenses and risk and the feedlot gets in a very healthy product. Implanting and ID tagging may be done at the feedlot or at the farm of origin depending on the arrangement. The idea of preconditioning makes a tremendous amount of sense. It is already implemented widely for home fed calves but communication and trust must develop for it to work between the cow-calf sector and feedlots. When the price is hot the best return for the producer is shipping right off the cow to the auction. Costs and risk are at a minimum but this is the worst-case scenario for the health of the calf. Pre-sort calf sales also increase the risk to the calves with multiple owners cattle mixed together. We can ill afford to have these large feedlots continuing to experience high death losses. Piles of dead cattle do not sit well in the public’s eyes. The preconditioning really works well when retaining your own replacements and combined with some sort of soft weaning such as fence-line weaning or using the nose flaps should help to significantly reduce respiratory problems and enhance weight gains in your herd. Preconditioning helps decrease sickness and disease in the feedlot which enhances weight gain minimizing any lung adhesions which can even happen in untreated cattle. Preconditioning will help the whole industry going forward, period.
