PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello folks! I hope all is well in the Maine-Anjou world! With the awesome weather we are having, I hope harvest and haying is close to wrapping up. Cattle prices are great all across the board and I hope you all have successful marketing of cattle. Just some points of interests on marketing. Our new, updated website has seen big time visits, especially on the classifieds and the Maine Mail that’s online! In bull season, the classifieds in March saw more visits in one month than the old site in one year! People from all over are online looking at the Maine Mail, food for thought. It is a very inexpensive way to promote your product to the world. The CMAA Board of Directors have also implementented a 25% off sale for the month of October on registrations and transfers! We called this our Thanksgiving sale - our way of saying thanks to all the dedicated breeders who have been working hard and producing good Maine genetics. Thanks you! and please to take advantage of this cost saving to you. In closing, I would like say thanks to the Sask crew for the very nice AGM! Also, the fall show season is almost here. Good luck to all exhibitors out showing and promoting your cattle. Its a good time to be out there when the demand has been awesome for Maine bulls this past year! Stu Byman
OFFICE MAnager’s Report Hello Everyone! Wow, I can not believe that summer is gone and we have our Fall edition of the Maine Mail out. I hope everyone had a great summer and that your weather was good. The Annual General meeting, as you all know, was held in Regina, SK and I hope that everyone that attended had a good time. I sure like to get together with all the people of the MaineAnjou Association - we have some laughs and get caught up on news. I would like to thank the Saskatchewan Association for the hospitality and the incredible Rib supper. As everyone knows, we have 40th anniversary Jackets that can be ordered and it would be a good way to keep the Maine-Anjou name in view at shows and such and to also show that you are proud Maine-Anjou owners. Please also take advantage of our 25% off fall sale starting October 1st to October 31st, 2011 on all registrations. Please also use our web site to advertise as it is such a great asset to have available to all of you and also if you have a farm web site let me know and I will set up a link for you from the Canadian Maine-Anjou site. CMAA Annual General Meeting The Canadian Maine-Anjou Association Annual General Meeting was held on August 20, 2011. Many long time breeders and some new faces made the trek to Regina, SK. The weekend began Friday night at the hospitality room at the host hotel. The meeting was held on Saturday at Heartland Livestock Services just outside Regina - thank you to HLS for use of their facilities for the day. The meeting went along very smoothly with some great discussions. The Board announced the “Thanksgiving Sale” - to thank the membership for their continued support and tremendous Maine genetics. For the month of October, all registrations and transfers will be 25% off. The membership also voted to add online registrations and transfer to their contract with ABRI. Elections were held and Barry Hall and John Hanbidge were re-elected for another 3 year terms. Doug Roxburgh of Stettler, AB was newly elected. Thank you to Robert Stenberg for his years of service to the CMAA board as he retires from the board. Following a relaxing happy hour, the “winners” of the silent auction items were announced. Thank you to all who donated and purchased items. Then the members were treated to a delicious supper of slow cooked roast beef and ribs from Smokin’ Oakies. Thanks to everyone who came out and to the Sask Maine-Anjou Association for hosting the meeting!

AB Association News The Alberta Maine-Anjou Association had a very good National Show last November at Farm Fair in Edmonton. We had a total of 54 entries with exhibitors from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta. Thank you all for participating in the National Show. The Grand Champion male was exhibited by Hall’s Cattle Company; HAA Power Stroke 227U. The Grand Champion Female was exhibited by SW Cattle Company; SW Miss Chills Rev 520R, with calf at side SW Cool Business 012X. The Juniors held their show again in Red Deer in July and had a very good show. The Alberta Association had their AGM this year right after the open show. We had 24 people in attendance which made a good meeting. We have new people on the board this year which we welcome. The 2011 AB Assoc. Board of Directors are: Robert Stenberg Ken Pashulka Doug Roxburgh Jean Renton Bryan Zimmer Kevin Shuckburgh Melanie Barkley Allan Crawford Craig Cameron Brian Brown The Alberta Association continues to support 4-H members that show Maine or Maine Influence steers and heifers. 2011 was another great year for 4-H members with 110 projects exhibited. 86 awards to 32 clubs that has been sent in so far. 77 Steers- 8 Club Champions, 4 Reserve Champions; 3 Interclub and 2 Reserve Champions. 18 Heifer and 10 Cow Calf- 6 Club Champions, 3 Reserve Champions; 3 Interclub Champions and 1 Reserve Champion. 5 Carcass steers and 3 steers with the highest rate of gain. MB Assoc. News - Douglas Test Station Report The Douglas Bull Test Station started the 2010-2011 with 144 bulls from ten breeds. Nine of the bulls were MaineAnjou, coming from Cee Farms Maine-Anjou (Barry & Edgar Walker), and Falloon’s Maine-Anjou (Carman & Laura Falloon). At the end of the test, 141 bulls had an average daily gain of 3.82 lbs. per day and the weight per day of age was 3.35 lbs. per day. The average daily gain on seven Maine-Anjou bulls was 4.23 and the weight per day of age was 3.58. The high gaining Maine-Anjou bull was owned by Falloon’s Maine Anjou and it had an ADG of 4.68 and a WDA of 3.69. Six Maines qualified for the sale on April 2, 2011. One Maine bull owned by Cee Farms sold for $5000 to Sid Wilkinson of Wilkinson Stock Farm. For the 2011-2012 season, bulls will be delivered from October 3 – 6. They will go on test and be weighed November 1 & 2. The 56 day weigh will be on December 27 and the 84 day weigh will be January 24. They will go off test and be weighed on February 21 & 22. The ultra sound will be done the week of February 21 and the semen test the week of March 19. Open House will be from March 26 until April 6. Coffee and donuts will be served. Sale day will be Saturday, April 7, 2012. This year there will be some changes, as it will be more of a bull development program. There will be no minimum weight gain and all bulls can be in the sale if the owner so wishes, but they must meet the other criteria. They will have to meet the standards for semen and scrotal measurements. The floor price this coming year will be $2000. There will be a choice of pelleted or textured ration, but the number of bulls in the pen for textured ration must be great enough to warrant having a separate pen. Breeding for Profit Producer Bus TouR Submitted by Gary Graham In June of 2011, Gary and Sandy Graham took a bus tour through the Dakotas into Nebraska viewing and getting information from various cattle operations. Our first stop was at Schaff Angus Valley Ranch, the #1 awarded Angus breeder in the U.S. All cattle are in show shape all the time and actually not a poor cow on the place (at least what we saw). They sell 500 head each year in one day. I asked the owner if the Irish Black cattle have been crossed quite a bit with the Black Angus, and his reply was yes they have. At the same time, in viewing their main herd bull, you could see a crease in the twist of the bull which suggests to me that this heavy muscled hip had come from somewhere else other than the Black Angus Breed, (maybe Maine). To some of us it does matter that at least in the Maine-Anjou breed we have something that gives value, and that is that all fullblood cattle have been parentage tested for 40 years. This, in fact, does and will carry weight in the future to certain buyers. Another stop was the Meat Animal Research Centre in Nebraska. The amount of testing on almost anything is enormous, but I might add there is a ‘create work project’ involved here also. The one thing that seems to have been proven through DNA is on non-breeding open heifers. They carry the male chromosome and would be culled early on through this process. A long day of PHD’s giving speeches was boring for most. However, they also have a large cattle herd owned entirely by the government for testing, as well as the land that was confiscated from about a hundred farmers in the 1940’s. We stopped at Genex Bull Stud which is a relatively new research center which did have 2 black Maine bulls. No one knew what they were, until told. To me, the one bull was bred right out and was very unappealing to all. The other,was a bull used quite extensively for show steers, but for me a rather poor example of what a Maine-Anjou bull should be. It is quite apparent by those involved in reproduction how bulls can be ruined by too much hot feed. The scrotum of a bull takes on fat between the body and the testicle and this fat, once there, never leaves apparently. Too much heat is built up in this part and the result is overheated sperm cells. We all know of the great show bull that has never bred an animal and many people know it’s not the best situation for breeding bulls. This is probably where it happens. We visited a large grassland ranch test centre in the sandhills of Western Nebraska. This is where all kinds of university testing (almost to the conclusion of huge amounts of wasted dollars) but nevertheless testing everything that could be thought of. This is where PHD’s do thesis’ on such things as what grass type does a cow chose on any given month. This has been tested for years through throat incisions in live animals and a pouch which reveals the grass that the cow has eaten. Rex Ranch was the next stop in Nebraska, a ranch of 330,000 acres with 12,500 cows and 10,000 yearling heifers. All cows are Red Angus, Simmental and Devon cross. All cows are red, proving that not all is black in the south. Although it is a huge ranch it is cross fenced with electric fence in 550 acre parcels, an interesting concept in such a large ranch. 28 Maine Mail Fall 2011
We travelled to Heartland Heifer test centre in southwest Nebraska. They have bred 80,000 heifers here, all A.I. Ranchers drop them off and pick them up in the springtime. A couple interesting facts, all heifers are heat detected not just needled and AI’d. A group of buckskin heifers were left there 2 years ago and no one knew what they were. Does that tell you something? Because they were different, they made such an impact that other breeders wanted this type of cattle. The management there would most definitely invite a group of red/ white Maine heifers because they want something different than the usual solid black and solid reds. An interesting thing they have observed is that the worst time to stress pregnant heifers (that is, move them with trailers and get them stressed) is between day 6 and day 45 of pregnancy. There will be 5 to 8% more abortions by causing stress at this period. They also stressed the importance of good feeding practices up to and including breeding, where I believe they said these heifers should be at 65% of mature weight. We saw that in the US, Maine Anjou cattle are not in the top seven breeds by number. There have not been enough people that sold the breed down there, in my opinion. Too much emphasis has been placed on show steers, so most people do not realize that Maine Anjou cows are actually a plus .The show steer thing is good, but eventually we get swallowed up by the bigger breeds using us and taking credit for such. Because there seems to be a vacuum in the knowledge regarding Maine Anjou cows, lots of cattlemen disregard us and see us as a nonentity. One thing I observed from a couple of purebred Black Angus breeders on the trip was the quote “wrong colour”. This was their constant saying to anything not black. When visiting Rex Ranch, they had no comment and did not see any cows there that were good. Since when is “wrong colour” a factor in breeding cattle? This is a huge problem in the mindset of many North American cattlemen. At the same time, one young guy on this bus trip had 800 cows. By looking at him you wouldn’t know what he did for a living. However, his comment along with another young cattle breeder on the tour regarding the Rex Ranch cattle was “there were lots of good cows there”. Those cattle were somewhat green, with a great set of calves. The right or wrong colour didn’t matter to these 2 young guys who in my opinion were the true cattlemen in comparison to the purebred breeders mentioned above. It was an interesting observation; real quality in cattle can come from different sizes, shapes, colours and breeds.

Browarny, Walter (Walt) Harry
November 28, 1935 - August 24, 2011 Born and raised in Calgary Alberta, a child with a vision of inter-mingling art with light. Today, Walt Browarny has devoted more than forty years of excellence specializing in livestock photography. He has done more to promote the subject of purebred beef cattle than any other artist in the history of the genre. For over four decades, Walt has been acknowledged by discerning professionals, knowledgeable livestock critics, and fellow artists, as the “camera man of livestock” who has set the standard that others strive to attain. Walt Browarny, beloved husband of Marie of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at the age of 75 years. Besides his loving wife Marie, Walt is survived by his children, daughter Shannon Browarny; son Allan Browarny and daughter-in-law Roxana; two grandchildren Corbin and Sophia.
