SKS SUPER PUNCHER 423K
The reigning National Champion bull definitely “Punched his Ticket” on the green shavings in Louisville at that historic venue. You can’t help but get excited when you see Puncher—I know I did the first time I saw him after he won Ft. Worth. He’ll make ‘em good and this will be one of the few opportunities in 2024 to purchase semen
LAFRAISE PENELOPE 92E
Sells due 9/18/24 to WIA Backwater Jack 060
Penelope was a member of our 2023 show string. This massive female has extra length and bountiful rib. Her dam is the power house donor, Wranglin Pauline. A maternal brother was champion Charolais steer at the 2024 Iowa Beef Expo. A maternal sister was Supreme Champion female at the Wisconsin State Fair. This female has an unlimited future.

LAFRAISE KATE 622

Sells due 11/19/24 to CCC WC Redemption. This great looking brood cow matron is sired by the ever popular Tank bull. She has extra body to go along with her feminine features. A maternal sister was high selling bred heifer at the 2023 Autumn in the Ozarks sale. She is the front pasture kind.

M6 NEW GERMAINE 5149 P ET
This proven donor continues to excel in the donor pen. She has worked to multiple sires. It takes a great one to make good ones from multiple sires and she has out done herself. Selling recip due 8/15/24 sired by the National Champion Super Puncher. Also selling embryos by the ABS sire Jefferson and the up-and-coming Gun Show.
PF MISS PATRICIA 2203
Good genetics always come to the top and this female was Reserve Grand at the American Royal and is an exceptional donor. You don’t find the opportunity many times to buy sexed heifer embryos out of a Kansas City Champion and the National Champion Super Puncher. The homework is done for you to make the next champion and donor cow.

DCR SILVER LED F136
What an opportunity—a flush sells on the dam of the most popular AI sire in the breed, JMAR Jefferson 8M11. This female will hold her own with any in the breed as far as earning power and she keeps producing the good ones. The Silver Gun females are probably some of the most underrated in the business and this one has proven herself to be a great one. Full sib embryos to Jefferson also sell.

“ “ HARD WORK MEETS BIG DREAMS empowering the next generation
WE KNOW THAT TO GROW AS A BREED, WE MUST GROW OUR MEMBERSHIP THROUGH NEW BREEDER DEVELOPMENT AND YOUNG PEOPLE AS SEEN AT THIS EVENT.
In wrapping up another successful Charolais Junior Nationals, one can’t help but be impressed with the hard work and dedication to the breed illustrated by the families and juniors at this event. Held this year in Belton, Texas, the event featured record involvement of Charolais Juniors from 29 states and Canada. In total, 453 entries were exhibited at this time-honored show, now in its 49th year. We know that we use the cattle to develop the young people in such events, and this was on full display as these exhibitors put forth full effort into the culmination of their hard work. From the breeding decisions, to the care and management of the cattle; these young minds are not only learning the intricacies of pedigree and genetics but are also embodying the values of leadership and responsibility rarely seen today. In addition to the show we saw strong engagement in the many industry contests. Public speaking, team sales, interview contests, a genomic session, and the AIJCA Leadership Conference all provided further opportunities for industry involvement, education, and professional development as they chart the course for their future in the beef industry. You can view the website or our social channels for photo event coverage to see the fun that these junior members had as they created relationships and memories that they will hold onto for many years.
We know that to grow as a breed, we must grow our membership through new breeder development and young people as seen at this event. As this demographic enters the industry, helping them reach milestones of success ensures our long-term advancement as an organization. They will purchase genetics from established breeders, source their foundation donors from their current projects, and continue to invest in our breed for decades to come. It brings a challenge to our membership-how will you mentor and provide opportunities for future Charolais breeders? No doubt they can benefit from your experience, knowledge and support. Likely, you were also once in their position and relied on the encouragement of a Charolais breeder to set the stage for the advancement of your interests in this great breed. Being willing to give our time, resources, and attention to these young people will become even more pivotal as we face the future of the beef industry and desire to see Charolais maintain and grow its role in beef industry.
One way is to support this generation of future AICA members is through our American Charolais Foundation (ACF) and American-International Junior Charolais Foundation (AIJCF). At the Junior National, the AIJCA Foundation presented a remarkable $56,000 worth of scholarships to support further education. In relation to the size of our organization, this is by far the largest scholarship program available to beef industry youth. Many of these scholarships are continuing in nature, providing financial reassurance over the duration of the awardees’ college careers. As we watched the young people receiving these opportunities and recognition, it was rewarding to see the tremendous caliber of young leadership that this program has built.
Even more opportunities are on the horizon, with current and future internship opportunities and industry-driven education through AIJCA. We are currently actively seeking support for these efforts, knowing that they will pay big dividends in the future viability of our association. This can be as simple as donating the proceeds of a portion of a lot in your production sale, making a donation in any amount to these programs, supporting next year’s event with a donation item, or factoring in an endowment as you coordinate your estate planning. Contact our staff at any time to discuss which options might work best for you. Our staff is also in the process of developing opportunities around breed research, as funded through ACF and the generosity of breeder donors. This marks an exciting time in our breed to capitalize on young talent, passion for the breed, all the while creating new tools and strategies which will provide a big impact on current and future AICA members.
When hard work meets big dreams, anything is possible. We know that our future lies at the intersection of tradition and innovation, and these junior programs are not merely cultivating cattle projects, but nurturing the future stewards of an iconic breed delivering a legacy of performance for years to come. Let’s ensure that the full force of our support is found for the next great generation of Charolais breeders. Is your deworming program working?
By Grant Crawford, Ph.D., Associate Director, Cattle Technical Services

Merck Animal Health maintains the world’s largest database of fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) results to monitor the field efficacy of dewormers. Today, the database has 14,506 samples from 600 farms. Twenty-three different products have been evaluated.
A FECRT is the standardized diagnostic tool to test manure for the presence of internal parasite eggs. It is important that 20 samples are taken both at treatment and 14 days post-treatment; the database only includes certified FECRTs of this number of samples from single farms. A successful deworming should result in a 90% or greater reduction in parasite eggs in feces.1
Based on data through 2023, the database demonstrates that pour-on (Graph 1) and injectable parasite products have fallen below the 90% threshold for successful deworming. The percent of anthelmintic failures — those with less than 90% reduction — was 76.5% for pour-ons and 74.8% for all injectable dewormers.

There are three classes of dewormers approved for use in U.S. cattle: benzimidazoles, endectocides or macrocylic lactones and imidazothiazoles. Certain classes of dewormers are not working as well as they have in the past. However, the SAFE-GUARD® (fenbendazole) formulations — all of which are in the benzimidazoles class — provide a median efficacy above 99.7% (Graph 2).

Decreases in efficacy likely are due in part to dewormer resistance, which is the genetic ability of a parasite to survive the effects of a dewormer of which previously were susceptible.
There is not always a visual sign of parasitism. Unless FECRT testing is conducted, it is unknown how effective the deworming was or the amount of time before reinfestation occurs after deworming.
Impact of parasitism
Internal parasites affect the nutritional status of the animal in three ways: They decrease feed intake, they decrease nutrient absorption and they increase nutrient requirements. These effects of internal parasite infections on the animal’s nutritional status are important because they impact and compromise every aspect of biology — including growth, milk production, immune function and reproduction.
Cattle producers put a lot of effort and resources into vaccinating their cattle and offering high-quality feed and mineral programs. These efforts and resources are not fully utilized and can be wasted if cattle are parasitized.
Set a deworming strategy
Take these steps to help maximize cattle performance:
1. If cattle are dewormed at turnout and not again until they come off the pasture in the fall, they have several months to pick up gut-damaging worms. Deworming cattle that are on pasture does not require gathering if using feed or mineral formulations and can be highly effective.
2. Deworm calves at cowside. When calves start ruminating, they are at a high risk of picking up internal worms. Deworming appropriately from the time of early exposure (from the age of two months) can result in improved weaning weights. For spring-calving herds, it typically is good to deworm calves six to eight weeks after turnout onto pasture.
3. Read label directions carefully and give the proper dosing amount. Under-dosing can contribute to reduced efficacy.
4. Work with your veterinarian to do FECRT testing annually.
Get a FECRT kit
You can request a free FECRT kit from your Merck Animal Health representative. Consult your veterinarian for assistance in the diagnosis, treatment and control of parasitism.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR SAFE-GUARD: Not for use in humans. Keep out of reach of children. No withdrawal period is required when used according to labeling. Do not use in beef calves less than 2 months of age, dairy calves, and veal calves. A withdrawal period has not been established for this product in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in replacement beef heifers after weaning or in dairy cows or replacement dairy heifers. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or calves born to these cows. Implant pellets subcutaneously in ear only. Any other location is a violation of Federal law. Do not attempt salvage of implanted site for human or animal food. Not approved for repeated implantation (reimplantation) with this or any other cattle ear implant within a single production phase as safety and effectiveness have not been evaluated. For complete safety information, refer to the product label.

Graph 2. Egg count reduction (%) of dewormer types
Nematodirus (shown here), also known as the thread-necked intestinal worm, is an unsightly parasite that causes infections marked by diarrhea and loss of appetite − both of which open the door for other internal parasites to cause even more damage.

Add Safe-Guard® (fenbendazole) when you deworm to take out the profit-eating parasites that your ivermectin alone just can’t.1 If you’ve only been using ivermectin (or any other kind of -ectin), it’s time to add a dewormer from a different class to your protocol. Because you’re leaving resistant parasites in your cattle – and potential profit on the table. By adding Safe-Guard, you can kill more of those microscopic monsters than you can with ivermectin alone.2 This different-class dewormer is one more way Merck Animal Health Works for you.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION | RESIDUE WARNINGS: Safe-Guard Paste and Suspension: cattle must not be slaughtered within 8 days following last treatment; Mineral and medicated feed products: 13 days; EN-PRO-AL Molasses Block: 11 days; Protein Block: 16 days; For dairy cattle, the milk discard time is zero hours. A withdrawal period has not been established for this product in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. For complete information, refer to the product label.

Tom Sonderup
Tom Sonderup is remembered for pioneering a multigenerational operation and for his overwhelming generosity, still, it’s clear that his legacy is immeasurable, not even by his yellow yardstick suspenders.
The Sonderup cattle operation at Fullerton, Nebraska started with Tom Sonderup’s father, Vern, who made his living as a farmer and commercial cattleman. However, it was Tom who took the cattle operation to new heights. He was among the fi rst to introduce the Charolais breed to Central Nebraska when the Sonderup family purchased their fi rst purebred bull in 1962 and Tom started to build his cow herd.
After graduating from college in 1976, Tom knew he wanted to return to the cattle industry and started his career by managing the Tri R Cattle Co. herd. After growing the herd in numbers, he and his wife Sandy eventually took over operations to form Sonderup Charolais Ranch Inc.
Through Tom’s leadership, the ranch was known for being one of the earliest to adopt AI and ET as common practice. In the 80’s, he began using a linear measurement system which coincided with his focus on practical cattle that could perform. Tom and his family frequented cattle shows as exhibitors including the Nebraska State Fair, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, Husker Harvest Days, and the National Western in Denver where his presence in the yards represented a friendly face and his participation in the carload and pen shows reinforced his commitment to uniformity.

Working with several cooperators in Nebraska, Tom managed and marketed calves from over 1000 cows annually. His focus remained constant, profi tability for cow-calf producers through to the packing fl oor. Though Tom and Sandy dispersed their cow herd in 2022 and held their fi nal bull sale in 2023, the goal of their breeding stayed

true through it all, to raise and sell the most useful product for seedstock cattlemen, commercial producers, and youth alike.
“My first Junior National was in Rapid City, South Dakota, and I had a class winner. My last Junior National was in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and I had another class winner. He was always so excited about that. He was such a big proponent of kids participating in agriculture and saw Charolais cattle as a good fi t for kids learning about the cattle industry and getting kids involved with cattle that would work in the pasture, show ring or not.”
- Kelly Hale, Oldest Daughter
No doubt, Tom Sonderup is easily recognized within the cattle industry, but many know him also for Papa Tom’s BBQ. Since 2010, Papa Tom’s has set up shop alongside the cattle barn at the Nebraska State Fair. He was originally asked to serve exhibitors breakfast and was offered a booth outside the barn to do it, but Tom had other plans. He recognized exhibitors and their families needed short lines and affordable, delicious food while exhibiting their livestock. So, he established a food truck and returned each year after that. As Papa Tom’s BBQ grew popular, Tom helped cater countless events, including Charolais Junior Nationals and other regional and national livestock events.
In fact, Tom Sonderup once again demonstrated his commitment to Charolais youth and AICA when he advocated hosting Junior National for the fi rst time in decades at the brand-new Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island. He served on the planning committee in 2012, 2017, and 2022 and always offered to prepare or coordinate the meals for each day. Tom was always glad to focus his time and efforts on AICA, AIJCA, and the Charolais breed. In return, he has been recognized as the 1991 AICA Seedstock Producer of the Year, a nominee for the 1991 BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year, 2011 Nebraska Farm Bureau Farm Family of the Day, and this year’s AIJCA Junior National Show Dedicatee.
Tom Sonderup passed away last year, and is survived by his loving wife Sandy, his four daughters Kelly, Jamie, Tracy, and Heidi, and his six grandchildren. To know Tom was to know a pioneer raising Charolais cattle but his true pride and joy was always his family. His kindness and willingness to serve others live on with them.

Larry Ludeke
Full circle moments are rare and often rewarding. To fully appreciate these moments takes reflection on the turning points that changed the trajectory of our future lives. Nobody appreciates these full circle moments more than Larry Ludeke of Liverpool, Texas. And fortunately for current American International Junior Charolais Association (AIJCA) members, Larry’s full circle moment involves the Charolais breed. This story started in 1966, Larry was an FFA member and attended the Calf Scramble at the San Antonio Stock Show. His agriculture instructor gave him a set of simple instructions: “Get that calf on the ground, get the halter on him, and guide him into the chalk circle like you’re driving a boat.” Larry did just that and was rewarded with a $200 Calf Scramble Certificate to be used to purchase a calf.
Just by sheer luck, Larry was introduced to the Charolais breed. The breed was still relatively newin the United States, but Larry’s father knew a man in the area who raised purebred Charolais. That fall, with the calf scramble certificate in hand, Larry visited that breeder and came home with a fullblood Charolais bull calf for $500. This was the next step in this full circle story resulting in the AICA and AIJCA gaining a tremendous leader and benefactor.Larry was admittedly “absolutely head over heels for agriculture” at this stage of his life. Headded to his herd by attending sales and buying bottle calves to raise. That first Charolais bull was the center of his herd and was used to breed those calves. The AIJCA was not established yet, so Larry took this bull and showed in the Open Show at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. That experience cemented his love of showing cattle and the Charolais breed, as well as an understanding of how beneficial a formal junior program could be for the youth and for the blossoming Charolais breed. Following college, Larry took a step away from the breed and focused on his professional life. But that interest and love was rekindled when he and his wife purchased land just south of Houston. Larry, along with his wife Beth, started Bar J Charolais on that property in Liverpool, Texas, and his passion was reignited. Today, they run over 1,000 head of cattle, far more than the twenty-two head he had initially purchased. Since his return to the breed, Larry has volunteered untold time and energy to the AICA, AIJCA, and the American Charolais Foundation (ACF). Larry has served in numerous positions on

the AICA Board. Bar J Charolais provided the National Sale ACF Heifer at the 2020 Cattleman’s Congress. He has always been an avid supporter of Junior Nationals.
The Russell W. Ludeke – Harold Christopher Truax II Memorial scholarship is an example of hisdedication to the future of this industry and our country. This scholarship offers a great financial benefit to either a Veterinary or Medical professional student, allowing these Charolais youth to pursue a dream, and ease the financial weight that these degree programs require.Among his contributions, one of the drawing awards offered at this year’s Rock Char Junior National will be a choice of Bar J Charolais 2023 open heifers. This is an incredible offering and a generous donation by Larry and Beth. When asked what motivated him to step out to make such great donations, Larry was very clear--that Beth’s support of him and the Junior program, and the support he received when just a young man is the driving force behind his generosity.
“That Charolais breeder did it for me. He didn’t have to sell that bull to me for $500. I know that this breed will not survive if we don’t encourage younger people to be involved.”
Larry Ludeke truly sees it as a blessing that he is in this position and takes great pleasure in doing all he and his wife can to support the AIJCA. Furthermore, the AIJCA members are fortunate to be the recipient of the closing of this full circle story of a young man blessed with a mentor who helped develop that love for the Charolais and now is returning that blessing as best he can.

“Greatness doesn’t pursue you; you have to pursue greatness.”
Those words stuck with and have driven Shade Bunker of Sparta, Wisconsin ever since she heard a professor say them in a class at Iowa State University. Looking back now, that quote is a perfect representation of Shade’s feelings after being selected as the 2024 Jordan Mack Memorial Junior Herdsman at the 2024 RockChar
Growing up in Sparta, Wisconsin as a third-generation Charolais breeder, Shade always knew that white cattle would be an integral part of her life. Her parents are fond of telling the story of Shade’s first trip to “the barn” happened when she was just eight days old because mom had to go check a cow. And from that time on, trips to the barn and white cattle have played a huge role in her life.
Shade’s first time as an exhibitor was when she was just three years old. Shade showed her first Charolais heifer then and that lit a fire that has grown and strengthened over the past 18 years. From the very beginning, Shade was hooked and knew she wanted to be involved in showing white cattle for the rest of her life.
Shade joined the American-International Junior Charolais Association as soon as she could and since then, she has yet to miss a Charolais Junior National. Whether it was a two-hour drive from home in Wisconsin or 18-hour drive across the country, Shade and her sister Breeze have become a staple in the barns at Charolais Junior Nationals across the country.
When asked about those who came before her that have inspired her, Shade rattled off a dozen people that have helped her along her path. Many wore the blue jacket, which inspired Shade to pursue becoming a Junior Board Member. Shade mentioned Caitlin Bryan (Jedlicka) encouraging her to run for the AIJCA Junior Board in 2020 being a true turning point and which proved to be one of the best decisions she ever made. That decision started a whirlwind of four years that culminated with Shade elected as the 20242025 AIJCA Junior Board President.
“Unbelievably blessed” is the only way to describe how Shade feels in being selected as the 2024 Jordan Mack Memorial Herdsman. She feels honored to add her name to the list of admirable and accomplished people that have been selected over the years for this honor. The fact that the past year’s herdsman, Makayla Houck presented this award to her made the moment so much sweeter for Shade.
“Makayla Houck is one of my best friends in the breed and to have her be able to pass that down to me was such a sweet moment and such a fantastic way to end the week and the year.”
From Colorado to Maryland and Minnesota to Texas plus over fifty head of Charolais cattle and countless friendships later, Shade’s passion for the breed has only grown. As Shade approaches her final year as an AIJCA member she doesn’t see it as an ending, but rather a turning point to a new chapter.
As a firm believer in quality over quantity, Shade hopes to continue to grow her own herd of purebred cattle and looks forward to helping her younger sister “Breezy” finish out her last couple of years as a junior. What makes Shade serving as president in the upcoming year even more meaningful is to serve that term with Breeze who became a board member this year. Named the Jordan Mack Memorial Junior Herdsman of the Year is a wonderful capstone to her time spent as a junior member. She reminds junior members to work hard every day, that the real work happens at home and to never stop pursuing greatness.

CHAD CLARK MEMORIAL OUTSTANDING SENIOR MEMBER

From his first Junior National in 2011 to this year’s event where he was named Chad Clark Memorial Outstanding Senior Member, Lucas Crutcher has always had a passion for Charolais cattle. Starting out, Lucas diligently competed in countless contests each year at Junior National which complimented his love for raising and showing cattle. It is with those skills, the lessons from his mentors, and the continuous support from the Charolais community that he has seen immeasurable personal growth. Though his time within the
“My dad is my biggest mentor. He got me started in the Charolais breed and has taught me everything I know about showing cattle
The drive and work ethic that his dad has passed down to him has certainly stuck with him throughout the years. As a competitive member of the Butler Community College Livestock Judging Team and Collegiate Farm Bureau participant, he has continued to demonstrate his passion for livestock. He has since graduated from BCC and will transfer to Iowa State University in the fall to continue his education and his livestock judging career. Despite this busy schedule, Lucas has been sure to dedicate plenty of time to his family’s cattle operation at home in Fair Grove, Missouri. Lucas says that they started out small, but since getting into show cattle, have focused more on generating embryos from a few donors to implant in recips each year.
These days, Lucas’ focus within the Charolais breed and at Junior Nationals has shifted to depend more on leadership than on competitions in and out of the show ring. After spending two years serving as an Area 6 Director on the AIJCA Junior Board, he realized that his best memories were facilitated by the youth leaders and mentors that make the Charolais breed such a tight knit community. Although Lucas is extremely grateful and humbled to have received both the Outstanding Junior Member and Chad Clark Memorial Outstanding Senior Member Awards among various other accolades, he notes that he whole heartedly believes that the thing that makes AIJCA and the Charolais community so unique is the focus on youth, rather than simply the goal to hang purple banners. Lucas is sure that the most important take away from years of work, competition, and friendship is this, “The Charolais

This year’s Outstanding Junior Member Jessi Hankins of Springfield, Missouri, has been an official AIJCA member since the age of eight when she was first eligible to show. Her roots within the Charolais breed run far deeper and her commitment to a long-lasting journey within the breed is further demonstrated by the fact that she has not missed a Junior National since her first in 2012. Jessi is quick to highlight that this would not be possible without the endless support from her large community, naming countless junior members, families, and adult mentors that have helped her along the way. She is most grateful for the guidance she has found within her 19-year-old sister, Emma Hankins. She even states that her favorite memory was at last year’s Junior National when she won her first Junior National belt buckle and was able to receive it from her proud big sister who was serving as Miss Charolais USA at the time.
Jessi’s first projects and introduction to raising cattle were the bottle calves she was able to raise as a girl. When she was old enough to begin showing, she opted to use the money she had saved from these bottle calves to fund the purchase of her first Charolais female which she began building her herd that has since grown to include a few crossbred cows which serve a recips for embryos from her donor cows. Outside of raising her own cattle, she also helps her family on their operation, competes in as many contests as possible at Junior National, participates in 4-H, and is a member of other breed associations.

“I live and breathe everything Charolais. Between showing and helping my family on the farm, there is not much spare time. I am grounded in my faith and volunteer during children’s church and am active with our youth group at Sac River Cowboy Church located in the Springfield Stockyards just minutes from our house.”
A testament to her appreciation of her family’s history within the breed, Jessi says she has been fortunate enough to have seen some success in the showring and in her participation in leadership contests. However, the recognition she is most proud to receive has been this year’s Outstanding Junior Member Award.
“The award alone is awesome but receiving it from my best friend and the 2023 recipient Ryanne Crutcher and earning it the same year as my honorary big brother, Lucas Crutcher, who received the 2024 Outstanding Senior Award, made it beyond special.”

KASHLYN KREBS
2024 PREMIER CHALLENGE EXHIBITOR
By: Brighton Lane

Three hundred exhibitors, from 29 states and Canada all arrived at the Cadence Bank Center in Belton, Texas for this year’s AIJCA RockChar Junior National. While in Texas, these exhibitors were there to not only partake in a week of showing cattle and of fellowship, but to grow their leadership and personal development skills through a multitude of contests and activities. Of the 300 exhibitors, a twelve-year-old from Gordon, Nebraska emerged as this year’s 2024 Premier Exhibitor.
Kashlyn Krebs of Gordon, Nebraska, along with her two heifers traveled 1,056 miles,15 hours, and through four states to reach the Cadence Bank Center, unaware of what the week would bring her. While in Texas, Kashlyn competed in as many contests as she could. All while accumulating points that would result in her being named the 2024 Premier Challenge Exhibitor.
To be eligible for the Premier Challenge Exhibitor, a junior member must compete in at least four of the contests offered throughout the week. The higher that exhibitor ranks, the more points awarded. At the end of the week, the Premier Challenge Exhibitor is awarded a $500 scholarship, sponsored by the Zehnder Waage Partnership.
Throughout the week while Kashlyn was busy competing and consumed by all the activities around, she was not aware of the points she was accumulating via the contests she was participating in. Kashlyn mentions, “My mom kept talking about how it was good I was getting all of these points, for doing well in all of those contests.” While Kashlyn knew what her mom was talking about, it did not really sink into her the implications of her doing well in these contests. She was more concerned with making friends, doing her best, and having fun. Even though Kashlyn was not keeping track of her points, the AIJCA staff was, and at the end of the week Kashlyn emerged as this year’s Premier Challenge Exhibitor.
When asked about all the contests she participated in, Kashlyn was quick to name Team Fitting as her favorite. Her team, Dad’s Favorites, consisted of Jady Ledoux of South Dakota, Kelly Gaffney of Wisconsin, and Blake Bruns of Nebraska. Certainly, winning the contest made it enjoyable. But Kashlyn explained that this was her highlight because she was able to use what she had learned about pulling front legs from Alyssa Copeland in preparation for this contest.
Even with her successes throughout the week, Premier Challenge Exhibitor was still not on Kashlyn’s mind as she attended the awards banquet Thursday night. Kashlyn and her friends were just looking forward to good food and fellowship that night. She remembers when they announced her name with a laugh.
“I had butter all over my mouth because I had so many of those rolls and I remember them announcing, ‘the 2024 Premier Exhibitor is Kashlyn Krebs’ and I stood up and yelled ‘What?’ before going up to the stage.”
Looking forward Kashlyn hopes to build on these experiences she has gained in the past four years of showing Charolais cattle. One of her main aspirations, is to someday be afforded the opportunity to wear a blue blazer and be on the Junior Board. Another long-term goal of hers is to attend veterinary school, where the $500 scholarship she received as the 2024 Premier Challenge Exhibitor will be utilized.
At the end of the day Kashlyn realizes that she could not have accomplished this great feat without the people standing behind her throughout the week and at home. She profusely thanked her parents, Kaleigh and Ty Krebs, Tell who helped hold down the fort; the Thomas Ranch; Kaitlyn and all the AIJCA staff that made that week possible. Even at her young age, 2024 Premier Challenge Exhibitor, Kashlyn Krebs recognizes those who helped her accomplish this award, which many can only dream of.

NEWS NOTES AICA MEMBERSHIP
Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Rex E. Ricketts on July 7, 2024, at the age of 83. Rex was a revered educator and a pillar in his community and the agriculture industry. A long-time resident of Hallsville and a cherished University of Missouri professor emeritus of animal science, Rex left an indelible mark on the world around him.
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Fair Grove, Missouri, Rex’s early life was steeped in agriculture. He and his brothers were known for their prizewinning cattle at fairs and cattle shows across the region. His father, Raymond Ricketts, was a 1937 University of Missouri graduate from the agriculture department who led the use of new access to electricity to improve the Missouri dairy industry. Adding to Rex’s deep Mizzou and agricultural roots, his uncle, Ralph Ricketts, was an MU professor of agricultural engineering.
Destined for the University of Missouri, Rex’s academic journey was distinguished, culminating in a doctorate in dairy husbandry. His leadership extended to various student organizations, including membership in Mizzou’s famous Roughnecks, as well as his Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity. During his final year as an undergraduate, he was recognized as the Outstanding Senior by the MU College of Agriculture. Throughout his time at MU, Rex found himself mucking stalls at the university’s dairy barns, which had been donated by none other than J.C. Penney, who would often stop by to visit. Rex described him as “quiet, but friendly to a stall mucker.”
Rex also met his wife, Sondra (Rainey) Ricketts, at MU, who graduated with a degree in library science, and with whom he recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. His lifelong interest in Charolais cattle can be attributed to Sondra’s dad, J.E. “Sky” Rainey, who ran a purebred Charolais operation in northwest Missouri, where Sondra grew up. Rex’s two younger brothers followed him in studying agriculture at MU, and all three of his children are
Mizzou graduates as well.
After a remarkable 42-year tenure teaching at the University of Missouri, Rex retired as the Director of the MU Extension Commercial Agriculture Program in 2013. His earlier career was marked by significant roles, including MU Extension State Dairy Specialist and Chair of the MU Department of Dairy Sciences. His efforts in leading dairy programs and improving the Foremost Dairy Research Center’s operations were pivotal for the university and the state. In 1993, the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors awarded Rex its Dairy Leadership Award, a testament to his profound impact on the industry.
While his academic specialty was dairy science, Rex’s expertise spanned well beyond dairy, as he worked closely with swine, beef, and agronomy educators, as well as industry leaders nationwide. He was lauded for his unique ability to foster multidisciplinary collaboration and develop practical agricultural technology. His leadership in organizing livestock teams at MU exemplified his commitment to the landgrant mission and continues to inspire other university programs across the country. Rex was also a founding board member of the National Center for Beef Excellence and its national genetic evaluation program, responsible for over 30 million commercial cattle throughout the United States. He even led the installation of a quarantine process at the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport to facilitate the shipment of Missouri livestock all over the world. Whether in the classroom or in the field, Rex’s innovative and energetic approach to his work significantly advanced Missouri’s agricultural sector. Rex’s impact was frequently and widely recognized. In 2019, he was honored with the Agriculture Educators Lifetime Achievement Award at the Missouri Livestock Symposium where his contributions were celebrated in the presence of esteemed colleagues and the keynote speaker, Temple Grandin.
Most recently, Rex was inducted into the American-International Charolais Association’s Hall of Fame on April 24, 2024. Having run a renowned breeding operation with his wife Sondra at their 170-acre Ricketts Charolais Ranch for
many years, he served the AICA for over 22 years as chairman of the Breed Improvement Committee, where he helped revolutionize the science and methodology for producing the highest quality Charolais cattle. Fellow Missouri native and Charolais breeder, Jim Husz, attested that Rex’s influence was “almost immeasurable.”
Among many other contributions to his community outside of his work, Rex served for many years as an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia. He had many interests, big and small. He loved watching his children and grandchildren perform in cattle shows, theater, robotics, equestrian competitions, and sports. He was a world-class tomato grower, accomplished swing dancer, and savored the simple joy of a cold Miller High Life at the end of a long day. Not surprisingly, he and Sondra were also avid Mizzou sports fans, season ticket holders for many years.
Rex is survived by his wife, Sondra, a retired librarian, and their three children, Chad Ricketts (wife, Gabrielle Ricketts), Trina Ricketts (husband, Brett Strand), and Neysa Kleinman (husband, Kevin Kleinman), all of whom have continued the family’s legacy of excellence and service. He is also survived by his brother, Kim Ricketts (wife, Linda Ricketts), as well as six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Rex Ricketts was so much more than any one thing; he was a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, educator, visionary, mentor, and community leader whose life and work will be remembered and celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to influence the agriculture industry, his family, and his community for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Charolais Foundation https://charolaisusa.com/americancharolais-foundation.php which will be used to create a Rex E. Ricketts Memorial Scholarship for Junior Charolais members.

50 YEARS OF CHAROLAIS SUMMERS “The Greatest Show On Earth”

Shade Bunker
President
Hello everyone! My name is Shade Bunker, and I am proud to say the I am your new AIJCA President. I am from Sparta, WI, where my family owns and operates J&A Charolais. My parents are Jeff and Angela Bunker, and I have a younger sister named Breeze who just got elected to the junior board as an At Large Director. I will be a junior this fall at Iowa State University, double majoring in Agricultural Business and Economics. At Iowa State, I serve on the executive team for the Agricultural Business Club as a Reporter. I am a member of the Block and Bridle Organization and help run The Classic preview show each spring. Also, I am a member of the Delta Chapter of the Sigma Alpha Sorority. This will be my 5th year serving on the AIJCA Board of Directors, and this year was my 13th Charolais Junior National as an exhibitor!
The 2024 Charolais Junior National Show and Leadership Conference was held in Belton, Texas June 23rd-28th. The theme for the week was “Party like a RockChar,” and you can bet that we did! It was an incredible week from contests to the showring. The junior board started the week off right by rocking out during opening ceremonies to some of our favorite 80’s rock bands. Throughout the event we had fantastic food, spectacular activities, and we even saw some of our favorite Charolais juniors get hypnotized. I always say that Junior National is hands down my favorite week of the year, and Party Like a Rock Char was no exception!
Four years ago in Brookings, South Dakota, was my first time running for the Charolais Junior Board. I know everyone remembers the craziness of 2020 and the Covid 19 pandemic, but that was not going to stop the Charolais breed from showing
our favorite white cows. This, along with some amazing mentors who previously wore the Blue Jacket, inspired me to run for the junior board at only 16 years old, quite literally the absolute youngest you can be to run. Looking back, I am so glad that I pushed myself to jump right in and start my junior board leadership as soon as possible. These past four years in the blue jacket have brought me countless experiences and opportunities. I am happy to say that I have made some of my best friends through this junior board, from Maryland to Colorado, Minnesota to Texas, and every state in between! I am beyond blessed to be able to give back to this amazing Charolais association.
With that, I am so excited to start this year off right by leading the 3rd annual VitaFerm CharFocus Leadership Conference at my home away from home in Ames, Iowa at Iowa State University July 22nd-25th. We have another jam-packed week full of fun events, leadership development, and agricultural industry activities. I cannot wait to spend another week with my Charolais family in the Cyclone City! Roll Clones!!
I want to say thank you again to the Texas Planning Committee and the 2023-2024
AIJCA Junior Board of Directors for all of your hard work in planning and executing this year’s Junior National. It certainly was a Rock Char week!
The 2024-2025 Junior Board of Directors is another outstanding group of young leaders that I hope you all get to meet this upcoming year! I am so excited to begin working with them and the Missouri Planning Committee to begin preparations for the 2025 Charolais Junior National in Springfield, Mo. There truly is no better year to lead this organization then for the 50th anniversary of the Charolais Junior National Show. Mark your calendars for next summer June 16th -21st, 2025. On behalf of the new Junior Board, we cannot wait to see you all there. We will work diligently this year to make sure it’s “The Greatest Show on Earth!”

CHAROLAIS SPOTLIGHT
CARTER HOGE (19), GOOD HOPE, ILLINOIS

How did you get into showing cattle? And more specifically Charolais?
Carter – I have always shown a few different breeds of cattle, but when I first started showing cattle I always had a Charolais in the barn and have continued to do so throughout my show career. I love working on at least one white cow a year and being surrounded by the great people within the breed.
What gets you out of bed in the morning? What’s your why?
Carter –I am very driven to make sure everything looks the best it can whether it’s washing heifers or feeding livestock and cleaning pens. I have always had a certain way it is done and do it consistently every day. With showing 4 different species, it is a lot to worry about every second you are not out there.
What is one thing you’d tell somebody to get them involved in our breed?
Carter –That it’s an incredible breed of cattle with amazing people and an awesome Junior National.
You’ve been allowed to create the highest quality show heifer ever made, what does she look like?
Carter –Bold ribbed, big bodied female that steps down on foot size and bone with comfort and flexibility, all while proportioning with presence and an attractive look.
What is your favorite memory in the show ring?
Carter –My favorite memory in the show ring would be in Louisville, Kentucky in 2022 when I had the opportunity to show the Reserve Supreme Champion Junior Heifer.
What are you most looking forward to at the Greatest Show in Springfield, MO?
Carter –I am most excited for the kickball tournament.
