Little Things Make the Difference
American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Mission Statement The AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior, value added performance, docility and carcass excellence for the beef industry while also providing expanded membership services for adult and junior members. By all accounts the 2014 National Junior Heifer Show (NJHS) can again be considered a success. Each one of these events takes on its own face. Whether that is more of a county fair, relaxed type of environment or the big city-big show environment of which we just completed. The same elements make each a success: • The smile on mom and dad’s face when their son or daughter accomplished a new step in life that made them proud. • The smile on a young exhibitor’s face when the competition is over and they know they did their best. • Mom, dad and children actually enjoying their time together. • Watching mom and dad walking down the aisle hand in hand with their young son or daughter! • Watching mom and dad turn more and more responsibility over to the more seasoned showman.

• Watching young exhibitors mature into young adults. • Hearing exhibitors say please and thank you. • Hearing exhibitors ask if someone needs their help. • Watching a young man make sure that the lady goes first. • Watching exhibitors handle tough situations in a mature fashion. Yes, those are the little things that make the NJHS a success - come to think of it they are not such small items and not one mention of a purple ribbon! I would be totally remiss if I didn’t mention the time and effort given to this event by AMAA staff Lindsey Broek and Devon Stewart and our summer intern, Amy Sampson. This particular show was, in itself, a monumental task for many reasons! Organization and patience are two highly-regarded qualities when managing one of these events. AMAA membership, these young ladies should make you proud! On the other end of the spectrum the AMAA is researching the move to a common base EPD with cooperating breed associations that use the MB-ICE system to calculate their breeds EPDs. This move will cause some changes in specific EPDs, but will not change the rank of a Maine-Anjou bull within breed. This move would allow the Maine-Anjou breed to be directly compared, from an EPD perspective, to those breeds
that all work off of the same common base. I would expect this common base decision to be made in the very near future with the end result being finalized by printing time of the 2015 Maine-Anjou Sire Summary. Special notes from the recently held AMAA Board of Director’s meeting: The Reaching Beyond Foundation is taking its next step to help meet its 2017 one million dollar goal. The AMAA will enter into a contract with C. Willoughby Philanthropic Consultation of Sheridan, Ind. A three-tier commercial program was approved which is in concert with the AMAA Long Range plan. This program is designed to meet one of the long range goals, to develop programs that recognize performance data standards and merit of individual
herds. All MaineTainer cattle are now eligible in the yards at the National Western in both the pen-of-three show and Bright Lights sale. MaineTainer open bull shows are now in place for 2014 North American, 2015 National Western and Fort Worth Stock shows. Please take time to review the AMAA Board of Director’s meeting minutes found later in this issue. Lastly, if you are interested in running for a position on the AMAA Board of Directors please refer to the AMAA Board of Director notification found later in this issue. A review of the candidates and membership ballot will be in the 2014 October issue of the Voice magazine.
Obituaries Thomas Eugene Lauterbach - Van Meter Thomas Eugene Lauterbach, 74, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Memorial Services were Friday, July 11 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel, Iowa. Tom was born Oct. 7, 1939 in Waukee, Iowa the son of Claire and Hazel (Forret) Lauterbach and grew up on a farm north of Van Meter. He graduated from Van Meter high school in 1957 and attended Iowa State University. He married Donna Edwards of Fontanelle, Iowa on Aug. 31, 1963. Tom and Donna made their home and farmed in Van Meter their entire married life. He loved farming and raising cattle. He was deeply involved with his kids and their 4-H cattle projects and made many lifelong friends in the cattle industry. He was also a Boy Scout leader, member of the Van Meter School Board, the Lions Club and the Booneville Co-op Board of Directors. Tom is survived by his wife, Donna and their children: Lance (Sherry) Lauterbach, Mike (Carri) Lauterbach and Kris (Joe) Knowles; grandchildren, Cole and Clair Lauterbach and Nic, Lacey and Nathen Lauterbach. Tom is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill. A memorial scholarship has been established with the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement to be given annually in Tom’s name at the Iowa State Fair.
Vaughn D. Riegel - New Paris Vaughn D. Riegel, 86, of new Paris, Ohio, died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind. Born on Nov. 17, 1927 in Ansonia, Ohio, he was the son of the late Chester A. & Clara (Maphis) Riegel. Vaughn retired in 2008 as OwnerOperator of Riegel Feed and Grain in New Paris, Ohio. He was a 1945 graduate of Jackson High School (Darke County), U.S. Army Veteran and Life Member of American Legion Post 360 in New Paris. Member of the Kiwanis Club in New Paris, he had attended Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind., played in the First Division U.S. Army Band and was a longtime cattleman and farmer. Preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jane (Scott) Riegel in 1993; brothers: Jack Riegel and Robert F. Riegel; sisters: Jean Riegel and Betty Polley Dittman in 2012. Survivors include a daughter and son-inlaw: Kayleen N. and John P. Dunker, Eaton, Ohio; sons & daughters-in-law; Lavon A. and Pattie Riegel, Louisville, Ky., Dwight D. Riegel, New Paris, Ohio and Kevin B. Riegel, Greenville, Ohio; sister, Patty (George) Jenkins, Walton, Ky.; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; special friend: Carolyn Race of New Paris, Ohio. Vaughn and wife, Jane, were also active Maine-Anjou members. They operated Parasian Valley Farm where they exhibited Maine-Anjou and other beef breeds at many national shows. Vaughn also managed the Kentucky Maine-Anjou National Show for several years. He was one of the early members of the American and Ohio Maine-Anjou Associations.

Record Setting History Highs! In the last issue of the Voice, I made reference to five-weight calves having the potential to bring close to $3/lb. or maybe more this fall or before. Guess what, it didn’t take long before a producer gave me a call to let me know that he thought that I was crazy. Well, it was only a few days later that it was reported that a group of five-weight calves brought $3.01 per lb.! In Superior’s June video sales, they reported that 450-490 lb. calves brought a range from $2.71 to $3.23/ lb. The 500-545 lb. calves sold in a range from $2.33 to $2.95. History has been written! As I travel nationwide, I see where miles and miles of fences have been removed and the pasture has been plowed or just sprayed and planted to corn or beans. In addition to the fences being torn out, bulldozers and excavators have had a hay day removing trees from every corner of the pasture to plant just a few more acres. My summation, barring any unforeseen obstacles, it looks to me that the cow/calf business should be real good for some time to come. As breeders of Maine-Anjou cattle, continue to keep calving ease and performance at the top of your list because today’s producers are looking for problem free cattle that perform! In the recent July issue of Beef Magazine, Mr. Joe Roybal, editor, states that he gathers his staff each summer for in-depth discussions on industry trends. Here are a few of their thoughts pertaining to the beef industry: • The U.S. beef industry is providing a more consistent quality beef product today evidenced by continued support of beef despite increasing retail prices. Branded beef will continue to increase and there will be more vertical cooperation as the industry continues to produce a high quality, consistent eating experience. • Expect strong cattle prices for the cow-calf sector for the next several years. •Cost management may cause producers to consider more confinement or semi-confinement. • Beef is turning the corner on its negative diet/ 8

health rap, as science increasingly debunks old perceptions regarding the healthfulness of fats and protein in the diet. • We can expect a growing use of genomics for selection, management and marketing of beef cattle at all production levels. • Changing weather patterns could force more feeding into the central plains and midwest and less in the southern plains. All in all, the cattle business for the cow/calf sector looks very promising, continue to improve your Maine-Anjou product and sell the benefits of this unique breed! 2014 Iowa Carcass Challenge Congratulations to Kenny Grimm of Koo’s Kattle Kompany, Audubon, Iowa and to Mike Holden of Holden’s Maines and More, Scranton, Iowa for competing and entering a steer in the Iowa Carcass Challenge, associated and managed by Iowa State University. Sixty-six steers were consigned by leading Iowa producers. The Maine-Anjou influenced steers did very well again with the Grimm steer placing eighth overall followed by the Holden steer in 11th place. This was out of a total of 66 head. In 2013, one Maine-Anjou steer was entered in the Iowa Carcass Challenge by Holden Maines and More. This was the first time that a Maine-Anjou steer had ever been entered and when the final placings were awarded, Mike’s steer placed third overall! Congratulations! It’s contests of this magnitude that lend credibility to the Maine-Anjou breed and proves the value that it can create! Congratulations to these two fine operations and thank you for your participation in representing the Maine-Anjou breed. 2014 AMAA / Tri-County Steer Futurity First things first, I’d like to begin by saying “THANK YOU” to all of the consignors in our second
year’s feed trial. This venue enables the AMAA the ability to continue to collect the necessary information and data that is vital for the future growth of the Maine-Anjou breed. Your support is beyond appreciated! The final feed trial results will be published in the January/February issue of the Voice. Plans have been made for this fall to hold our third feed trial at the Tri-County Steer and Heifer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) located in Lewis, Iowa about an hour east of Omaha, Neb. You can find more information regarding the upcoming TCSCF on maineanjou.org. Please feel free to contact Dave with any questions you may have regarding this year’s futurity.
Identity: A Maine-Anjou breeder alliance that is committed to meeting the mission goal. Two Key Elements of the Program: 1. MAPP herd involvement is required. 2. Important for producers to enter the program with an achievable level of production data. This is a three-tiered program that re-establishes a focus on Maine-Anjou genetics and its relationship to calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, ultrasound data, scrotal and docility scores, EPD profiles plus performance and carcass traits. It is each breeder’s choice to select a tier that works for them and be able to change tiers at their discretion. An exclusive logo will be issued to breeders to identify this unique program and can be used in their advertising to feature their progressive genetics that meet or exceed the program guidelines. Please read the ad in this issue of the Voice concerning this exciting adventure. Please take some time to really study and consider entering your herd in this designated program. It will involve your commitment and dedication to not only your program but to the ongoing improvement of Maine-Anjou genetics. I invite you to get involved. bOARD MINUTES President Elizabeth Heaton called the 2014 annual meeting, held in Louisville, Ky., to order at 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25. Each delegate was asked to sign in on the roll call sheet. Secretary Becca Moore read the secretary’s report and Lauren Prill, Kansas, made a motion to approve it and was seconded by Laney Syphrett, Texas. Bailey Oakes, Oklahoma, made a motion to approve the written treasure’s report that was handed to each delegate and Lauren Prill, Kansas, seconded the motion. Each board candidate gave a short speech to the delegates. Nominations were opened for the 2014-2015 Junior Board. Bevan Holmgren was elected to a Region 1 position, Ladd Landgraf was elected to the open Region 3 position and voting was held to elect our two-year At-Large position, which was won by Tayler Gall. This automatically moved Taylor Goering to a one-year term in Region 1. Queen candidates Hannah Topmiller and Mikala Denney addressed our delegates and the delegates then proceeded to vote. Results would be announced at the banquet. President Elizabeth Heaton gave announcements on events going on throughout the week and Lauren Prill made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 10 a.m.

Slow-Cooked Shredded Beef Lettuce Wrapped Tacos Prep. 10 min • Cook time 6 hours 20 minutes • Serves 16 1 can (10 1/2 ounces) Campbell’s® Condensed French Onion Soup 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons ancho chile powder 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1 boneless beef chuck roast (about 2 pounds) 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves 1 cup Mexican Crumble Cheese (about 4 ounces) 1 head bib lettuce (leaves pull off in single leaves for serving) Key-Lime Sour cream Salsa Verde Directions: Stir the soup, chili powder and cumin in a 4-quart slow cooker. Add the beef and turn to coat. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours or until the beef is fork-tender. Remove the beef from the cooker to a cutting board and let stand for 10 minutes. Using two forks, shred the beef. Return the beef to the cooker. Stir the cilantro in the cooker. Spoon about 1/4 cup beef mixture into each lettuce leaf. Top each with about 1 tablespoon cheese and salsa verde. Top with the key lime sour cream if desired. Mexican Quinoa Prep. 20 minutes • Cook time 20 minutes • Serves 4 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup quinoa, rinsed 1 small onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped (optional) 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chile peppers (such as RO*TEL®) 1/2 envelope taco seasoning mix 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro Directions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat; cook and stir quinoa and onion in the hot oil until onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and jalapeno pepper to quinoa mixture and cook until garlic is fragrant and slightly softened, 1 or 2 more minutes.

Cook 2-2 1/2 hours on low-medium heat. Coarsely mash beans with potato masher if desired. Transfer to bowl when done. Sprinkle with cilantro, top with cheese and serve. Lemon Lava Cake - Oklahoma Lemon Lava Cake 1 box Lemon cake mix 1 ¼ c. Milk ½ c. vegetable oil 3 eggs 1 (3.9 oz.) Lemon instant pudding 2 c. Milk 1 (12 oz.) bag White Choc. Chips 1 Lemon; zested & juiced 1 jar Lemon curd Filling: 1 c. Powdered sugar 1 pkg. Cream Cheese 1 carton Cool Whip Directions: Line crock pot with parchment paper. Mix cake mix, 1 ¼ c. milk, oil and eggs; pour into crock pot. Mix pudding and 2 c. milk then let sit for 2-3 min. until soft set. Pour pudding over cake mix. Sprinkle chips on top. Cover & cook 2 ½ hours. Mix filling ingredients until smooth. Layer Cake, Curd, Filling and whipped topping.

Hello everyone! I’m Reighly Blakley, this is my second year on the junior board and I was elected president at junior national this year. I hope your summer has been a great one! I know that here in my part of Oklahoma we have had plenty of rain, which is a big difference from the past few summers and it has the grass growing along with the calves! I hope that everyone enjoyed the 2014 National Junior Heifer Show in Louisville, Ky! It was a great week filled with many contests and events, getting to see old friends, and my personal favorite, making new ones! I would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors for helping us put on such a great junior national this year! I have enjoyed serving on the board this past year and I am honored to be serving as the 2014-2015 president. I, along with the rest of the junior board, look forward to what the year has in store for us! One of the first big projects for the junior board is our 2015 calendar. Be looking for us to contact you about calendar ads! Mark your calendars for June 20-26, 2015, we are headed back to Springfield, Ill., where I attended my first junior national 10 years ago! At this time, I would like to speak to all of the young Maine-Anjou exhibitors. There is nothing else you can do in the summertime where you can learn more than at the junior national. It is also where you and your family can do things together and become closer as a family, as I have in the past 10 years. I challenge all of you young people to strive to run for the junior board. AMAA Board of Director’s Meeting Minutes June 24, 2014 - Louisville, Ky.
Meeting was called to order by vice-president, Mike Holden. Members present: Brett Carter, Cory Thomsen, Cody Tebbenkamp, Eric Walker, Marty Van Vliet, Cliff Randall, John Griswold, Jim Hett, Jason Minnaert, Dennis Moore and Mike Holden. Arriving a few minutes late: Alicia Rigdon and Jirl Buck. Members not present: Mike O’Hara, Barry Nowatzke. Others present: John Boddicker, Dave Steen, Leon Matlock, Larry Nielson, Carol Willoughby and Erin McKinney. Meeting was turned over to president Buck at 3:10 p.m. A presentation was given by Carol Willoughby in regard to the Reaching Beyond Foundation and her company’s philanthropic consultation in helping the foundation meet its 2017 goals. Primarily Ms. Willoughby’s company will deliver the understanding to the membership and potential donors the everlasting and positive impact that will be made through its youth, education and research programs. After a question/answer period and discussion, a motion was made and seconded to hire Carol Willoughby for an 18-month period to lay ground work and carry out a plan to meet the association’s foundation philanthropic campaign goal of $1,000,000.00. Motion carried. The November 2013 AMAA Board of Directors meeting minutes were discussed. Motion was made and seconded to approve minutes with the discussed corrections. Motion carried. The corrections were from the Breed Improvement notes: PHA was missing in notes dealing with new 2014 bull registration regulations and to eliminate the clarification statement as the rule applies to bulls born after January 1, 2014. After discussion and critique of a few line items, motion was made and seconded to accept treasurer’s report as updated and amended financial information. Motion carried. Registration report was given by John Boddicker. Statistics presented were through May 2014, showing a slight increase in business of the same period in 2013 with the most notable increase coming in the form of 40 August/September 2014
junior memberships at 7%. Committee Reports Buildings/Grounds Discussion was held regarding the estimated sale value of the current AMAA offices and its potential if placed on the market. No motions brought before the board. Breed Improvement In keeping with the AMAA Long Range plan that states, “Develop programs that recognize performance data standards and merit of individual herds”, a power point presentation was delivered unveiling a proposed three-tier commercial program. (advertisement on later page in this issue of the Voice) Motion made and seconded to approve program. Motion carried. Data was presented in regard to the AMAA changing to an EPD common base with other breeds involved in the MB-ICE program. Motion was made and seconded to give the authority to the executive committee to accomplish this when needed. Motion carried. Show Update given regarding 2014/2015 confirmed open show judges. Blake Nelson will replace Don Boggs as one of the three judges for the pen-of-three show at the 2015 National Western Stock Show. Discussion was held regarding protocol used for the bulls and females that actually show in the NWSS pen show. For future reference, all pen bulls and females, including possible substitutes, must be checked in and weighed on specified check-in date/time along with all pen and sale entries. Motion made and seconded to remove the MaineAnjou sire requirement for the NWSS pen bull and female shows. Motion carried. A Junior MaineTainer Show was approved by the North American for the 2014 event in Louisville, Ky. Open MaineTainer Bull shows were approved for the 2014 North American, 2015 NWSS and 2015 Fort Worth Stock Show. The next National Maine-Anjou Show/Convention will be held in Fort Worth, January 2015.
Sale After discussion, the decision was made to not hold a sale this fall (2014) in conjunction with the North American in Louisville, Ky. Motion was made and seconded to remove the Maine-Anjou sire requirement for females and bulls entered into the Bright Lights sale in Denver, as long as cattle still meet all other standing requirements. Motion carried. Youth No motions brought before the board. The 2015 National Junior Show will be held in conjunction with the Chianina breed in Springfield, Ill., the week of June 21, 2015. The 2016 National Junior Show will be held in conjunction with the Chianina breed at a place and dates to be determined in the state of Texas. The 2014 National Youth Leadership Conference will be held in conjunction with the Hereford and Shorthorn junior associations in Fayetteville, Ark., July 27-29. Finance All items covered in treasurer’s report. Foundation Foundation items covered in conjunction with previously mentioned Carol Willoughby presentation. Long/Range Items were in conjunction with Breed Improvement committee discussion/motions. Magazine No motions brought before the board. Voice financials were discussed and critiqued with motion to accept in conjunction with financial report given by treasurer. Promo/Marketing Commercial Development Director, Dave Steen presented a report on various steer feeding trials and contests. A constant theme over the years has been how well the Maine-Anjou cattle perform in a feedlot setting and on the rail. All this without really any selection pressure by Maine-Anjou breeders in regard to performance and carcass traits. Beginning with the 2015 NWSS Maine-Anjou yard activities ALL MaineTainers will be eligible for the pen-of-three show and Bright Lights sale.
Brigh Lights Sale
Besides the MaineTainer eligibility change the Bright Lights sale will be working under a new commission schedule for consignors. In the past, the sale has employed a 12% commission on all sale animals. Starting in 2015 the first $8,000 of a sale animal will be a 12%, after $8,001 and up the commission charge will be 4%.

Due to changes with our online registration login, current members using this service will have to create an online account. Here are the steps: • Type in your breeder number and password as you normally would. • You will be prompted to enter an e-mail address. • Enter a valid e-mail address and your normal password (you do not need to change your password). This information will be updated to your account and you may login as you normally would from that point on.

If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 as of Dec. 31, 2013 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it will be considered a rush unless otherwise specified. it is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. it is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. no work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). there is no same-day turnaround. if requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WiLL not deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. If a paper is needed within two weeks, a rush will be required at this time of year. Thank you.

REGISTRATION NUMBERS
Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site, maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed by clicking on “Search the Maine-Anjou Breed” or by logging into your account.
dNA, Th ANd phA REQUIREMENTS
Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, so please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

FOUNdATION ANIMALS
Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new selfbilling sheet for foundation fees.
BULL CALF REGISTRATION
If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parents or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three weeks.

Please dispose of any old self-billing worksheets and registration forms you may have to avoid work being held for price differences.
Registered animals with certificates are now able to be transferred online, but must be completed by the current owner by logging into his/her online account to complete the transfer. If the buyer is responsible for the transfer fees, the seller must indicate this in the comment line, otherwise the seller will be charged the transfer fees. Remember, anytime you transfer an animal your dues must be paid unless the animal being transferred is the last animal in your inventory. You will be able to see your current inventory when logging in to your account online.

You may purchase registration blocks of 15, 25, 50, 75 and 100 at a discounted rate. These blocks are prepaid registrations and may only be used for animals under 13 months of age. Any unused blocks expire December 31 of each year. See the new selfbilling worksheet for pricing. Multiple discounts will not be allowed. If you register online, the block discount (the greater discount) will be applied at checkout.

by Robin Kleine You may recognize Becca and Maci Chamberlin by their bling show sticks and braids in their hair, as these two energetic young women are no strangers to the showring. Since older sister Becca showed at her first National Junior Heifer Show (NJHS) in 2009 and won the She’s a Lady Futurity, this powerful duo has won more than a few purple ribbons and banners in the Maine-Anjou breed. Outside of the ring, Becca and Maci have matching go-getter attitudes and real enthusiasm for showing livestock. Inside the showring, the Chamberlins have the composure of veteran showmen. Becca (13) and Maci (9) live in Winchester, Ind., with their parents Clark and Mabrey Chamberlin. Clark and Mabrey met showing sheep in Indiana and shared their love of livestock with their children from
an early age. Before they even started kindergarten, both girls were winning cattle shows. Becca began showing cattle when she was three years old and Maci followed when she was four. In the past decade, they have collected many banners, trophies, buckles and titles as a family. However, Becca and Maci are very competitive with one another, because they are so close in age. Maci says her favorite memory is when she had the reserve grand heifer at the 2013 Heart of It All show in Lima, Ohio and beat her sister. Regardless of who does the winning, the Chamberlins work as a family. They say their uncle and aunt - Brian and Dru Goettemoeller, also of Winchester, Ind. – have helped and supported them the most.

Winning Starts at Home
Accolades like these do not come without hard work. Mabrey says preparations for this year’s National Junior Heifer Show (NJHS) began in August 2013 when they selected their projects for the upcoming show season. The family also shows competitively throughout the winter and early spring months, attending jackpot shows nearly every weekend. To get their heifers ready for junior nationals and the Indiana State Fair, they start a hair-working routine at home in April. Becca explains their process. She says, “Our dad gets our heifers in to the cooler in the morning. We wake up a little later than him and we rinse the heifers and tie them up in front of their fans and then blow them out. We put sheen in them then work their hair with scrubby brushes. We feed them when we are done working hair. Around lunchtime we rinse again and do the routine over. We do the same in the evening, then feed them when we are done working hair.” “My dad or mom usually turns them out at night because it is so late when we do that,” she adds. In addition to their daily chores, Mabrey says both girls play sports year round and participate in other extra-curricular activities. Becca is an ambassador at her school, is in Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
throughout the week. Becca chose to compete in the Public Speaking, Team Fitting, Livestock Judging and Showmanship contests. Public Speaking is her favorite contest, because she likes talking to people about the cattle industry. This year, she fittingly chose the topic “What are your favorite parts of showing cattle and why?” Additionally Maci competed in the Poster Contest, Public Speaking, Showmanship and Livestock Judging. Their contest winnings in the Maine-Anjou breed include: • Becca – 6th Place Junior Public Speaking, 4th Place Junior Showmanship and 1st Place Team Fitting. • Maci – 4th Place Junior Public Speaking, 10th Place Junior Showmanship and 2nd Place Junior Poster. As young exhibitors, the girls often observe the first classes on show day to understand the showring set-up and how the judge is choosing the winners. Throughout their careers, the Chamberlins have been watching and learning from Bailey Core of Pleasantville, Iowa., past president of the National Junior Maine-Anjou Association Board of Directors. Core says of Becca and Maci, “From the time the Chamberlin girls hit the ring, about everyone in the country had figured out who they were. They both have had an extreme amount of success in the showring, showing Maine-Anjou cattle around the nation. I was excited to see the girls start attending the National Junior MaineAnjou Heifer Shows, but most importantly get involved in all of the contests.” Both girls appear calm

The girls like trying new things and every year Maci and Becca compete in a variety of contests as well as show their heifers at junior nationals.

3rd Overall MaineTainer Female Maci Chamberlin and collected inside the showring. To practice showmanship, they set up a showring in their front yard and Mabrey serves as the judge. Because of these lessons, Becca and Maci are focused on the judge and aware of their animal at all times during the show. Becca says, “To get the judge’s attention, I just get my heifer to the right spot and get her set up quickly.” As they stand at the halter, the girls have two thoughts, “I want to win,” and “I hope she doesn’t get loose.” Luckily, winning happens more than the latter. They each did exceptionally well in the contests and the showring at the 2014 NJHS. Becca exhibited Pixie, a dual-registered MaineTainer and Chianina, her first bred and owned heifer. Pixie was named Champion Bred and Owned Chianina Female and won her class in the MaineTainer show. Maci’s heifer for the 2014 NJHS, Roxie, is her favorite heifer to date, because she was her heifer from the start, rather than being Becca’s first. Roxie also fared well at the NJHS, as she won Champion MaineTainer in the She’s a Lady Shoot Out and was 3rd Overall in the Owned MaineTainer show. These wins join a long list of Maine-Anjou achievements for Becca and Maci. Ever since Becca’s first junior national in 2009, and her success with BPF Mercedes 128U, the Chamberlins have been exhibiting
champion Maine-Anjou and MaineTainer heifers on all levels.
Why Maine-Anjou
As cattlewomen, Becca and Maci have chosen the Maine-Anjou breed to grow their young herd. They like the diversity within the breed and the breeding options available to them. Additionally, the people within the Maine-Anjou breed have been very supportive of the family. Maci says that the best part of traveling to shows is seeing other states and friends from other places too. She adds, “We like Maine-Anjou cattle because of the great people in the breed - the breeders and those at the association.” It is safe to say that the Chamberlins are making a name for themselves within the Maine-Anjou breed. Others on the show circuit, like Core, have noticed their hard work and love for the industry. The Effect of Retail Beef Prices by Ed Creason
What effects retail beef prices? What do high retail prices effect? Are these prices affected by beef producers? Are beef producers affected by these prices? We know that inputs, supply, demand, exports, imports and other factors affect beef prices. Retail beef prices are at an all-time high along with retail pork prices. How does this effect the consumer that is purchasing beef and pork? What is causing these record high prices? Lets take a look at some of the things that are having an impact on these prices. Supply – Cattle numbers are as low as they have been in over 60 years. This has been caused by some weather related events throughout the country that have caused a shortage of feedstuffs and water in certain areas. Cattle numbers are expected to increase over the next few years but may be slower than some expect especially due to good cattle prices. Demand – Demand for beef continues to be strong and it looks like exports are gradually increasing. If the exports can stay stable or gradually increase it will keep beef prices at increased levels. Inputs – Feedstuffs, water, labor, equipment, etc. The prices of feedstuffs seem to keep increasing but do have some fluctuation to them. Water is usually free, but with the droughts a couple of years ago many producers had to haul water to their cattle. Labor is important to every operation and can have an impact on the bottom line. Equipment needs to be functional and safe for animals and humans and it seems like the price of equipment continues to increase as well. Disease – I know this is an effect that we don’t think about very often as beef producers but it can have a major impact on prices. If we look at the pork industry and the effect that Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) had on the swine industry this past year we can see the effects of a disease on an industry. There were millions of pigs lost to PEDV and this caused increased prices for pigs as well as an increase in the price of pork. Could this happen in the beef industry? How would the beef industry react to something like this? All of these factors have a major impact on retail beef prices. How do high retail beef prices effect the consumer? How long will the retail beef prices be able to sustain these high prices?
It looks like beef prices are going to stay high for a while longer. How long? Most people don’t know for sure and I don’t think that most people would have predicted that beef prices would have been as good as they have been for as long as they have been. Many consumers enjoy eating beef and especially grilling beef during the spring, summer and fall months. Will consumers continue to pay these higher beef prices? Will they switch to a different cut that might be more economical? Or switch to a more economical beef product? Or a more economical protein product? How do we keep our market share of the protein sources available? It looks like if we can continue to stay competitive with other protein sources in quality and price we can continue to possess a nice piece of the market share for protein sources. Do you look though the beef and/or meat products available at the grocery store when you are there? Do you notice the quality that is available at your local grocery store or even the different qualities that might be available in the same store? How do we make sure that the consumer has a positive eating experience every time they eat beef? Next time you go to the grocery store take a look at the meat that is for sale there. Look at the color and quality that is offered at your grocery store and decide if you feel it is the product you think should be offered to consumers. We need to produce as consistent a product as we can across the industry. I know this can be difficult because tenderness is a little hard to get a handle on and then there are differing ribeye areas and different carcass weights. All of these factors make different sized cuts and products. We can produce a consistent product for the consumer if we just focus on this and make it a priority. This will help more consumers have a positive eating experience. How do we continue to maintain our market share or increase our market share? You as the producer need to focus on raising the highest quality product you can in the most efficient way you can. I know it sounds easy, but it takes a lot of hard work from the beef producers. Eat Beef!
