• Entry Deadline - Entries must be postmarked by May 1, 2012.

• Entries postmarked after May 1, 2012 until May 15, 2012 will be required to pay double entry fees.

• Ownership Date - Entry must be solely in exhibitor’s name by May 1, 2012.

• Registration certificates must clear the AMAA office by May 1, 2012.

• Please allow 10 business days for registration process to be completed.

• NO SUBSTITUTIONS

Eligibility of Contestants

Participants must be members in good standing of the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) and can not have reached their 21st birthday prior to January 1 the year of the show.

Divisions

Age divisions are determined on Dec. 31 of the year preceding the show.

• Junior 12 years of age and younger • Intermediate 13-16 years of age • Senior 17-20 years of age

Fees

• Exhibitor fee - $30 per exhibitor • Show fee - $25 per entry. Bred and owned entry fees are separate from owned entry fees.

• Bedding fee - $40 per head for indoor bedding • Junior dues must be paid in full for entries to be processed.

• Banquet tickets for sale during check-in. All tickets must be purchased no later than noon on Wed. June 20.

• If an exhibitor is entered in both the Chi and Maine shows, they will only receive one exhibitor meal ticket and one exhibitor banquet ticket.

Awards

• First through 10th place will be recognized at the banquet.

• First through 5th place will be presented with a certificate and award.

AMAA Rules and Regulations

• Exhibitors are subject to all rules and regulations of the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA). When an entry is made, exhibitors agree to abide by the rules and regulations established by the AMAA, as well as the rules of the show management. Entries found to be misrepresented and persons not abiding by the show rules will be disqualified.

• All animals must be registered with the AMAA. The original registration certificate is required at check-in.

• Tattoos will be checked, must be legible and correspond exactly with the original registration certificate. We will check tattoos even if they have been verified. Other than Brucellosis Calfhood tattoos, there shall be no other permanent identification marks other than those noted on the certificate of registry.

• The attempted surgical or non-surgical alteration of conformation of an animal is strictly prohibited, except for dehorning. Cattle are to be shown in their natural conformation.

• The use of false tailheads, added hair or other materials to any part of the animal’s body is prohibited.

• The dying or artificial changing of the existing color and color pattern is prohibited.

• No artificial filling (pumping).

• All horned animals more than seven months of age must be dehorned.

• Any and all cattle shall be made available to have blood drawn or hair pulled for parentage verification, detection of foreign substances or the presence of altering. If recorded parent is excluded as a result of DNA typing, the owner can, at his expense, request the AMAA to determine actual parentage. Failure to determine parentage will result in disqualification of that animal from the AMAA herdbook.

• Heifers exhibited at 20 months of age or older must be accompanied by a certificate of pregnancy. Heifers used in embryo transfer must be accompanied by a certificate of positive fertility issued by a licensed veterinarian.

• Exhibitors shall wear show harnesses to exhibit entry numbers.

• The show superintendent will split classes as near to equal as possible.

AJMAA National Show Rules and Regulations

• Show entries must be owned solely by the exhibitor.

• Participants must accompany and exhibit their show entries.

Exceptions: • An exhibitor has more than one animal in the same class, in which another junior participant may help by showing one of the animals.

• Injury or illness • The youth committee will review other circumstances • Official shirts are required while exhibiting animals and will be available at check-in. You are not required to wear show shirts during showmanship.

• Any and all cattle shall be made available to have hair pulled for parentage verification. If recorded parent is excluded as a result of DNA, the owner may at his expense, request the AMAA to determine the actual parent.

Failure to determine parentage will result in disqualification of that animal from the AMAA herdbook. All cattle will be made available for veterinary examinations to determine the presence of altering. The show committee reserves the right to remove any animal from the show.

• States are to stall together in assigned locations during listed hours.

• Animal health commission rules and regulations of the host state will be enforced.

• Cattle are not allowed to leave prior to the conclusion of the show.

• Overhead fans are allowed in the front half of stalls.

• FAN CAGES ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. • Decisions of Show and Youth Committees are final.

State of Ohio Health Regulations DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE COLUMBUS, OHIO INSPECTION AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS OF LIVESTOCK EXHIBITED IN OHIO 901:1-18-01 CHAPTER’S APPLICATION. (A) Animals listed in this chapter when moved or imported into Ohio for exhibition purposes only shall comply with the requirements of this chapter and when in compliance with the provisions of this chapter shall, with the exception of rules governing movement and importation of quarantined animals, be exempt from any other rules governing movement within or importation into Ohio.

(B) Animals moved within or imported into Ohio for any purpose in addition to exhibition shall meet all movement and import requirements of Chapter 901:1-17 of the Administrative Code.

901:18-04 EXHIBITORS.

(A) No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he knows or has reason to suspect is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease or residue.

(B) The owner or bailee of an animal with symptoms of an infectious or contagious disease shall, when directed by an exhibition official, the approved veterinarian, or an employee of the Ohio Department Of Agriculture, immediately remove the animal from the exhibition premises.

(C) Upon request, each person who presents for exhibition or exhibits an animal, shall make available any certificate of veterinary inspection, registration certificates, vaccination certificate, and other documents to exhibition officials, the approved veterinarian or an employee of the Ohio Department Of Agriculture.

(D) Each person who presents for exhibition or exhibits an animal for which a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection is required by rules 901:1-18-01 to 901:1-18-11 of the Administrative Code shall forward a copy of the Certificate Of Veterinary Inspection to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division Of Animal Industry.

901:1-18-06 CATTLE

(A) Cattle moved within Ohio for exhibition: (1) The animals presented for exhibition must show no symptoms or evidence of an infectious or contagious disease.

(B) All cattle imported into Ohio for exhibition must: (1) Be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection issued within thirty days preceding the opening date of the exhibition; (2) Originate from a tuberculosis-accredited free herd, an accredited free state or zone, or a modified accredited advanced state or zone; (3) If originate from a modified accredited state or zone must comply with Rule 901:1-17-03 of the Administrative Code.

(4) If originate from an accreditation preparatory or a nonaccredited state or zone are prohibited from exhibiton; (5) If from a brucellosis class A state or area/zone must be negative to an official brucellosis test within thirty days of the opening date of the exhibiton unless: they are under six months of age, steers, or official vaccinates under twenty months of age (dairy) or twenty-four months of age (beef); and (6) If from a brucellosis class B or C state or area/zone must meet all requirements for pre-entry testing as specified in 9 C.F.R. 78.9 and obtain an Ohio permit prior to movement.

(C) Cattle from a brucellosis certified free herd or class free state or area/zone are not required to be brucellosis tested.

Further Explanations

• Bred and Owned Pre-entry required. $25/head show fee (in addition to $30 entry fee and $25/head open show fee). Exhibitor must be listed as breeder and owner on original registration certificate. On bred and owned entries only. Dams of MaineTainer females and steers do not have to be registered Maine-Anjou or MaineTainer as long as the dam is registered in another breed’s registry and on file at the American Maine-Anjou Association. If the calf’s dam is registered with another breed, a copy of the dam’s registration paper must accompany both the calf’s registration application AND your junior national entries to prove ownership in the exhibitor’s name at the time of conception.

Bred and owned entries out of commercial and non-registered dams are not allowed.

• Cow/Calf The cow determines where the pair will show. The cow must be owned by the exhibitor at the time the calf is born.

Both animals must be registered solely in the junior exhibitor’s name. Cows exhibited with calves at side must be lactating. Calves must not be more than 240 days of age at the time of the show. Bulls and heifers must meet AMAA registration requirements. Calves born after May 1 are required to have proof of application for registry.

Calves may be shown as individual entries. Cows may be evaluated and screened out of the show on the basis of udder quality. Only natural pairs are eligible.

• Groups of Four Maine-Anjou and MaineTainer heifers may show together within a group in group classes. Only animals also shown individually qualify for group classes. State residency determines grouping. A minimum of three different junior exhibitors is required for a group entry. A maximum of six junior members may accompany each group into the showring.

• Steers Must be at least 1/4 blood Maine-Anjou, with at least one parent being registered and recorded with the AMAA in the junior exhibitor’s name. Must have a complete set of baby teeth. Steers are shown by weight. Classes are determined after weigh-in.

Contests - Sign up for all contests at check-in Photography

• Photos must be delivered during check-in. If you are not attending the show, entries can be mailed to the AMAA office. They must be postmarked no later than June 1. The AMAA will not be held responsible for lost or damaged photos.

• Entries must be 8 X 10 color photos mounted on 11 X 14 black cardboard. Absolutely no framing or matting.

• Photos can not be altered or digitally enhanced in any way. NO BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS ACCEPTED! • Photos become the property of the Maine-Anjou Voice and can be used for publication or promotional materials.

• Judging will concentrate on all aspects of photography.

• A panel of judges will review the entries. Winners will be announced at the banquet.

• Maximum of two (2) entries per contestant. Only one entry per contestant will be elgible for placing.

Salesmanship (contest will be held with chi. Sr. Div. is seperate) • Contestants attempt to “sell” an animal of their choice to a group of judges or potential buyers.

• Required information assembled in a folder:

• Copy of registration certificate • Pedigree

• Performance information

• Breeding information • Phenotype

• Sales discussion

• Marketing decisions dictated by environment, customer base, etc.

• Judging criteria:

• Organization of information

• Overall presentation

• Contestants will be expected to answer questions • Random presentation order posted prior to contest.

Showmanship (Maine order- Jr., Inter., Sr.; Chi order- Sr., Jr., Inter.)

• Contestants must show animals entered in their name.

• If no animal has been entered, the Youth Committee will assign one.

• Judging criteria:

• Appearance of animal (it is a non-fit competition)

• Appearance of exhibitor

• Overall presentation of animal (skill as a showman) • No outside assistance allowed during competition.

• Fourth through 10th place will be ranked during the contest and the top three will be pulled out randomly.

• Top three will be announced at the banquet.

Poster Contest

• Contestants will be given the theme for the National Youth Leadership Challenge and will be asked to design a logo and promotion piece for the conference.

• Posters will be provided by the AJMAA. The AJMAA will also provide SOME coloring/writing materials, but contestants are more than welcome to bring more of their own.

• NO PREVIOUS MADE MAPS/DRAWINGS WILL BE ALLOWED! • Contestants will have 25 minutes to complete their posters.

Stockman’s challenge (contest will be held with chi)

Objective – The Stockman’s Challenge is designed to test a competitor’s knowledge of the bovine health and the beef industry. It should be an educational experience for the participants.

• You will take a written quiz and have to identify items used in the cattle industry.

• This is an INDIVIDUAL contest.

Public Speaking (contest will be held with chi)

• Speeches are to be the contestants original compositions (consultation is allowed in drafting process of prepared speeches).

• Notes are allowed.

• Visual aids are recommended and will count towards total points. No electronic aids allowed, aka powerpoints.

• Speeches should be no more than six minutes long, after which time points will be deducted.

• A random presentation order is posted prior to the contest.

• A panel of judges will assess the speeches.

• The panel may pose questions at the conclusion of each presentation.

• Guests are admitted but are not allowed to prompt, cue or ask questions to any contestant.

• Prepared Speeches: • Junior Division Choose one topic: • What is your favorite junior national contest and why?

• How do you help take care of your cattle back home and why do you think it is beneficial to assist in helping?

• What animal has been your favorite show animal and why?

Intermediate Division Choose one topic: • How have high cattle prices affected your operation?

• Explain the benefits of a vaccination program in your cattle herd.

• Does your operation utilize social media and why? What are the pros/cons of social media?

Senior Division • Of the 3 topics below, you will pick out of a hat once you arrive in the room to prepare your speech • How do you respond to the online article that an agriculture degree is useless in today’s society? • Today’s consumers are wanting more information on where their food comes from, what feed is used, what medication/ chemicals have been used, etc. What can we as beef producers do to help ensure our customers that we have the safest food supply in the world?

• Social media is gaining in popularity. How can we utilize that outlet to tell the story of agriculture? Will it help and what are some other options for telling the story of agriculture and the beef industry?

• You will have 25 minutes to prepare your speech.

• You will be allowed to bring in your own research into the preparation room. Absolutely NO PRE-PREPARED speeches are allowed.

Livestock Judging (contest will be held with chi.)

• This is an open contest. Divisions competing are Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Adult. Non-members are invited to participate. Awards are given to AJMAA national show contestants only.

• Contest will consist of at least four cattle classes and one questions class.

• Judging is individual.

• No talking is allowed.

• No oral reasons will be given.

Team Grooming

• Teams consist of three people (must be from same state to qualify for state sweepstakes points).

• Oldest participant determines division.

• The animal, chute, equipment, supplies and power source are not provided and are the teams’ responsibility.

• Chute placement designated by show staff. Equipment must be contained in this area.

• Animals start wet and must be finished in 30 minutes.

• A team-designated member presents the animal for final judging.

• A panel of judges assesses the teams.

• No outside assistance is allowed during the competition.

Cook Off

• Teams will consist of at least four people. You are encouraged to have one person from each age division

and at least one adult on each team.

• A time limit of ten (10) minutes will be allowed for each team presentation, for each minute after the ten minutes a point will be deducted. After ten minutes the judges will be allowed to ask questions.

• The main dish in the meal must contain beef.

• The dish must be prepared nicely for presentation to the judges, as presentation is part of the score.

• All members of the team must participate in all of the different parts of the contest.

• Teams will be judged on presentation, skit, taste and side dishes.

• Each team must prepare enough food to feed at least fifty people (in small portions), so that the crowd can

sample everyone’s creations and masterpieces.

• The recipe of the dish must be typed and turned in at time of entry. It should also be posted so the crowd can see it as they come to taste the dish.

• Each team must provide all of their own supplies, including the meat and cooking unit.

• Contestants need to have at least two sides to be served with the meal.

• Note: A side is to be considered any solid food to be served with the meal, such as potatoes, corn or the onions and peppers in Fajita’s. Sauces don’t count.

• There is no limit to the number of teams allowed per state.

• Note: We will allow combination teams if your state does not have enough people.

• There is to be no alcohol used in cooking the meal. However, cooking wines are acceptable, but no other

alcohol will be tolerated. This will lead to immediate dismissal from the contest.

• A panel of three judges will evaluate the meals.

• Teams may begin preparation at any time to be finished by time of the contest.

• Awards will be given for the top three meals.

• The best side dish, dessert and skit will be placed.

Herdsmanship

• State-by-state stalling arrangements are made by the show superintendent.

• Judging criteria: • State unity • Neatness • Organization of tack and chute space • Cooperation and attitude

• Presentation of cattle while stalled • A different panel of judges will rate herdsmanship each active day.

• The host state provides half the judges; the rest are chosen at random from participating states.

Parade of Flags

• This is the state introduction and flag display ceremony.

• A representative from each state should bring their flag and participate.

Individual Sweepstakes Contest

• Exhibitor must show at least one animal to be eligible. Awards will be presented to the top three point-earning junior, intermediate and senior.

National Maine-Anjou Queen

• Eligibility requirements:

• Applicant must be in good standing with the AJMAA.

• Participated in two previous AJMAA national shows.

• Ages 14-20 (applicants cannot have reached 20 years of age prior to January 1 the year of the

contest and must be single with no children).

• Parents must be AMAA members in good standing.

• Active involvement in raising and promoting Maine-Anjou cattle.

• Must be present for opening day of the AJMAA national show through the conclusion of the show.

• Second terms allowed only when no other qualified individuals apply.

• Applications must be in the AMAA office by May 1 the year of the show.

• Applicants must also assist AMAA and show staff throughout the week.

• Applications must include:

National Maine-Anjou Junior Princess

The purpose of the Junior Princess contest is to raise the interest level for the National Maine-Anjou Queen Contest as well as raising awareness and activity levels of younger AJMAA members. Junior princesses will be selected at the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show. The AJMAA Board along with the AMAA National MaineAnjou Queen will act as the selection committee with selection concurring with the AMAA National Queen Contest interviews.

Contest Guidelines

• Applicant must be in good standing with the AJMAA.

• Participated in one previous National Junior Maine-Anjou Show.

• Appliant must be between the ages of 10 and 13.

• Applicant must show an active interest in raising and promoting Maine-Anjou Cattle.

AMAA Scholarship Award Applications must be postmarked no later than May 1, 2012!

The American Maine-Anjou Association Scholarship Award is presented annually and will be announced at the AMAA National Junior Maine-Anjou Show each year. The number of scholarships awarded will be decided at the AMAA annual meeting according to the interest earned that year. This year two (2) scholarships at $1,000 will be awarded. Successful applicants will recieve a scholarship to attend the college, university or other school of their choice the fall semester immediately following selection. The scholarship must be used within 12 months of issuance. Money forfeited will be returned to the AMAA Scholarship Fund.

Qualifications: 1. Applicant must be a current dues paying member of the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association 2. Applicant must be at least a graduating high school student, but must not have reached their 21st birthday prior to May 1 of the current year.

3. The AMAA Scholarship may be awarded to an individual one time. Therefore, previous recipients of the scholarship are not eligible.

4. Applicant should display an interest in Maine-Anjou cattle and should be an active participant in the activities of the breed.

Required for Application The following items must be included upon submittal of application and postmarked no later than May 1, 2012 in order for the application to be processed.
