NWSS Junior Heifer Show
Michele M. “Shelly” Zeedyk, 55, of Hicksville, died Monday, July 29, 2013 at Community Health Professionals Hospice, Defiance, Ohio. She was born on April 30, 1958 in Defiance, Ohio, the daughter of Roger and Karen (Coplin) Farlee. Shelly was a 1976 graduate of Tinora High School. She attended college at Northwest State, earning an associates degree in accounting and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in management. On September 21, 1985, she was united in marriage to Zane Zeedyk. Shelly was the Chief Fiscal Officer of the Defiance Public Library, Defiance, Ohio. She attended First Church of God in Defiance, and Grace United Methodist Church in Hicksville. She was an active supporter of Relay For Life and was the 2012 RFL Honorary Chairperson. She was a member of Hicksville Village Players for many years, being very active in theater and drama. Shelly enjoyed volunteering at the Payne Church Camp and loved long hikes and traveling. Shelly is survived by her husband Zane, three daughtersErin (Jon) Timbrook of Bryan, Ohio, Jessica (Nathan) Clark of Pataskala, Ohio, Jennie (Michael) Ingram of New Bern, North Carolina; two sons-Colby Zeedyk of Maumee, Ohio, Nathan Zeedyk of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; five grandchildren- Andrew and Natalie Timbrook, Jackson and Camdyn Clark, Makayla Ingram; her parents- Roger and Karen Farlee; a sister Melissa (Mitchell) Diemer of Defiance, Ohio and a brother Mitchell Farlee of Columbus, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a brother- Michael Farlee.

The show will take place on Monday, January 20, 2014 and will be held on the “Hill”. A complete schedule will be printed in the National Western premium book. The show is on January 23, 2014 Per ACA rules, market steers must be papered Chianina but does not need to meet the minimum % rule. A complete schedule will be printed in the National Western premium book. More information will be posted as it becomes available on the ACA website at www.chicattle.org.
NAILE Market Steer Show Congratulations to Sutton Bellar of Wisner, NE for exhibiting the Grand Champion Market Steer at the 2013 North American. The Grand Champion steer was sired by Monopoly and weighed in at 1,315 pounds. Congratulations to Baylor Bonham of New Castle, OK for exhibiting the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer at the 2013 North American. The Reserve Grand Champion steer was sired by Monopoly and weighed in at 1,332 pounds.

Another New Year with Many Opportunities Tyler Humphrey, Director of Marketing and Performance Programs
I would like to first wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! For those of you that know me you can attest that the holiday season is my most favorite of them all. It is a time filled with cattle shows, cattle sales and lots of family time. However, this year I am excited about the New Year for another very special reason. Lynnette and I are expecting a daughter to be born mid-January! This fall has been a special one as we have continued to see top prices in the purebred and show cattle industry. The shows have also been exceptional with many people exhibiting cattle this year at the North American. In this issue you will find complete Jr. and Open show results along with the sale report from the ACA National Sale held in Louisville, KY. Up next on the agenda are several production sales that lead right up to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Co. This is my favorite show of the season and will be even more eventful this year with
the addition of the Jr. Chi show on “The Hill� and the Late Night Legacy genetics sale to be held at the Double Tree Hotel. Throw in the Pen Bull & Female shows and we have one jam packed week in Denver. We hope to see you all there. Even if you are not exhibiting, please come take part in the events and support our great breed. Looking even further down the road I need to remind you all that the ACA will be managing both the Iowa and Ohio Beef Expo Chi Sales. Please find more information in this issue as well as on the ACA web site. We would love to help you market your very best bulls and females at these great events. Yearly Wrap-Up and Looking Forward Ed Miller, Chairman
Louisville 2013 is in the books. Once again the chaos of making the ACA National Show has come and gone with many memories being made. A sincere thank you goes out to all the ACA members and their families for being part of this epic event and congratulations to all of the winners. Louisville has always been a bittersweet event. It seems like it takes forever to come around each year with the opportunities to see old friends and to see many of the new and upcoming genetics on the hoof but yet there never seems to be enough time to visit with friends and ACA members. Time seems to always be short. Make sure that each of you thank Heather Counts for being on hand to coordinate and manage the show for the ACA, as usual she pulled it off in a very professional manner with help from her daughters and her husband Buck. ACA intern Kyle Dice also did a great job being on hand to assist with anything that was presented to him and Tyler once again assembled a tremendous offering in the ACA National Sale. Way to go! As many know, this is also the time of year that change comes to the ACA board. Retiring board members Dr. Rob Sheets, Mark Johnson & Art Pittman deserve recognition for their time and efforts of working with the ACA board. I personally hate to see any of them depart as they have been great sources of information and ideas over the past several years. Thank you! Also, welcome to the newly seated board members Brad Winegardner, Keith Schrick & Mike Rose. The board looks forward to working with each of you and propelling this association forward. The ACA honored several 40 year members during the National Show. These members have remained active for forty years and still remain active. A special thank you to each and every one on the list as you are the true foundation to this breed organization. thanks each of you for your dedication to the breed. Speaking of the foundation of the breed, a special thanks to the Johnson family from Iowa for exhibiting their full blood bull and their high percentage cattle in Louisville, it really was a blast from the past to see these cattle. The performance of these genetics is truly amazing and can offer a great deal to the industry. In the October/November issue of the Journal, Rob Sheets wrote about preparing for the future. Better words really cannot be spoken for what is happening at the ACA. Yes there have been changes, there have been changes in the past and inevitably there will be changes in the future, but as ACA members, we need to be prepared for change. The ACA staff and board members are working to bring new opportunities to the ACA membership. 2014 will kick off the first “Chi” influenced heifer show on the “Hill” in Denver at the world famous National Western Stock Show. New opportunities for feeding and marketing bulls are in the works, new potential heifer futurity shows are in the talks, the possibility of genomic influenced EPD’s are a possibility, the coordination of sources of Chianina beef providers will be moved forward to assist the restaurant demand, and all facets of the ACA genetics will be included. On a different note, I had an enjoyable visit with Tom Looney in Louisville and as always he was full of valuable information. He did provide me with some information from Italy that was very interesting and I included it as follows: (ANSA)- Florence, Italy, November 12- McDonald’s unveiled a new hamburger for the Italian market Tuesday made 100% from prized Chianina beef. The Gran Chianina, made from the same cattle butchered for the famous “Bistecca Alla Florentina” steak, will be available Wednesday in all 470 McDonald’s locations across the country for three weeks.

Exciting Junior Events on the Horizon by Megan Hunt, AJCA President
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and is enjoying this New Year! Another NAILE has come and gone I would like to take a moment to thank everyone that helped to make it a success. First off a huge thank you goes out to Heather Counts, as always she did a wonderful job and the show wouldn’t have ran as smooth as it did without her. Also, a thank you goes out to the rest of the staff, Kyle Dice, Tyler Humphrey and the entire adult board. On behalf of the Junior Board I want to thank Art Pittman for getting our jackets done in time, they turned out great! Last but definitely not least I want to thank the Junior Board for working hard all week and doing an awesome job! The Junior Board is hard at work fundraising for the 2014 Junior Nationals that are being held in Louisville, KY. We will be having a raffle again this year, the drawing will be held at Junior Nationals and tickets will be available for purchase from any Junior Board member starting in Denver for $50, contact any board member if you are interested in purchasing one. The winner will receive a Chiangus bred heifer.

S S Many breeders have elite females from which they can market valuable genetics and offspring. With the use of advanced reproductive technologies, more offspring can be propagated to help multiply the success of breeding and marketing programs. While many breeders are familiar with embryo transfer (ET), an increasing number of breeders are implementing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) into their reproductive programs.

Embryo Transfer

Conventional (in vivo) ET involves specific hormonal treatment (with follicle stimulating hormone) of donor cows and heifers to cause multiple follicles to ovulate. The donors are bred using artificial insemination (AI) following super ovulation after estrus (standing heat). Approximately seven days after insemination, embryos are non-surgically collected or “flushed” from the donor’s uterus and transferred fresh into synchronous recipients who will serve as surrogate mothers, or frozen to be implanted at a later date.

Embryo transfer is one option that can increase a cow’s reproductive efficiency, allowing her to have numerous calves per year. While the average cow produces six to seven calves in her lifetime, ET can increase her reproductive efficiency to numerous calves per year – allowing breeders to multiply the success of their superior pedigrees. Embryo transfer is a very accessible technology and produces the option to have embryos transferred fresh into synchronized recipients, or to have the embryos safely frozen to be transferred at a later date. By creating more offspring that are valuable to a herd, breeders can advance their marketing opportunities, improve the reproductive performance, and enhance the rate of genetic gain. In Vitro Fertilization An IVF collection, called an Aspiration or Ovum Pick Up (OPU), is the process of harvesting unfertilized oocytes, (unfertile eggs) directly from the ovaries of a donor cow or heifer. Recovered oocytes are fertilized one day after aspiration, and transferred seven days after fertilization. During this eight-day time period, they are cultured and grown in an incubator with controlled media, temperature and environment to mirror the cow’s uterus. They are then transferred into recipient cows seven days after the recipient’s standing heat or estrus, which is similar to the transfer process for embryos produced by embryo transfer. Breeders who choose to use IVF technology have the opportunity to obtain more offspring from valuable females

Use Calving Ease Scores to Monitor and Reduce Dystocia By Bob Weaber, Ph.D., PAS Cow-calf Extension Specialist, Kansas State University
The old management adage “If you don’t measure it, you can’t improve it!” holds true for many beef production traits. It is especially true for dystocia or calving difficulty. It is important for producers to review their current data collection scheme and the data they use in selection of bulls to remedy problems in their herd. Many producers still collect birth weights of calves as part of their performance record collection system. Producers are encouraged to transition to collection of calving ease scores instead of or in addition to birth weights. Birth weight only

accounts for 55-60% of the genetic variation in calving ease. So, selection for reduced birth weight alone won’t improve calving ease as much as selecting directly on calving ease. And since birth weight is strongly correlated with other growth traits, reduction in birth weight is usually associated with decreased growth performance at weaning and yearling. When selecting a service sire for use on virgin heifers, it is recommended to focus on selection of Chianina influence bulls with Calving Ease EPDs of 9.0 or greater. If you are using artificial insemination, select bulls with high accuracy Calving Ease
EPDs to further minimize risk of dystocia events. For cow-calf producers, calving ease is the economically relevant trait associated with dystocia. Economically relevant traits (ERTs) are those that directly generate revenue or incur costs in beef production systems. In the case of a commercial cow-calf producer, dystocia (or lack of ‘calving ease’) is what generates costs in a cow herd through direct losses of calves and their dams, increased labor costs, and certainly lower reproductive rates among cows that have experienced dystocia. Birth weight is an indicator trait. In this case, birth weight provides some information on calving ease. Birth weight alone doesn’t directly generate revenue or incur costs independent of calving

ease. It’s important to recognize that there is an optimal range of birth weights in beef cattle. Certainly, too heavy of a calf is a problem during delivery of the calf hence our selection, at least historically, for lower birth weights. However, too small of a calf at birth is problematic as well. This is especially true for winter/spring calving herds. During severe cold stress, low body weight calves are more susceptible to hypothermia and subsequent death or disease issues. Indeed, very low birth weight calves in northern latitudes can dramatically reduce survivability for calves born in winter months. Recording calving ease scores is easy and should be done at or shortly after birth. The Beef Improvement Federation recommended calving ease scores are listed below and in the front of the NCBA IRM red books.

Monitoring calving ease in heifers and cows will allow producers to select sires with optimal calving ease and moderate levels of birth weight; helping to minimize dystocia. The calving ease records may also allow identification of sires that are causing problems. Sire selection for improved
calving ease should focus on Calving Ease EPD, and for sires of replacement females, Calving Ease Maternal EPD should be considered. Calving Ease Maternal describes the genetics associated with the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve without assistance.

Favorite NJHS Contest and Why: My favorite contest would have to be showmanship. Showmanship is a contest everyone has a fair chance at no matter who clips your heifer, how much many you spend or how much you have won in the past. Least Favorite Show Task of the Day: Easy – breaking down after the show. Would You Rather Read A Book, Play Cards or Fit A Calf: Fit a calf. Favorite Activity Outside of the Show Ring: I would have to say hanging with my family. We are an “on the go” type of family so it is nice to have some down time to spend together. What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up: I know I want to be involved in agriculture and help promote our role as agriculturist in feeding to the world. I would also like to be involved with youth. What Quality or Skill Do You Have That You Are Proud Of: At almost all shows, I actually help fit my own heifer or steer. A lot of girls are intimidated by all the guys that have become very good at fitting but I have learned that it is more fun when I help fit my own rather than watch someone else do it. Most Embarrassing Show Moment: This would probably be when I went to move my heifer’s backleg during Showmanship at Simmental Junior Nationals and she kicked my showstick out of my hand and it landed 10 feet behind us. The judge must not have seen, because I ended up winning the Intermediate Showmanship division that year. Favorite Show Animal and Why: “Lauren”. I had Lauren in 2009 and bought her from Bob May. She always loved being a show heifer and had very successful career. Her highlights included 3rd overall at our state fair, Champion Maine at American Royal, and Reserve Champion Maine at NWSS. Why Do You Raise and Show Chi Cattle: My family and I obviously have an appreciation for the Chianina breed but the main reason we stay involved is because of the people. We have met some of our best family friends through showing Chianina and Maine cattle. Those memories you make at shows with your “show friends” are what makes all the hard work worthwhile. Who Is Your Mentor and Why: My parents. My parents have always been role models for myself as well as many others, I am just lucky to have a front row seat. My parents have taught me to work hard and be gracious whether we win or lose. This mentality has gotten me a long ways so far and hope that I can teach my kids the same thing in the future. Advice to New Juniors Starting in the Chi Breed: Get involved and you will never regret it. Events like the National Junior Heifer Show, are a great place to start getting involved. This can simply be participating in a few contests and before you know it you will have met some of your new best friends. Also, I encourage you to run for the National Junior Board of Directors. ACA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
Summer Board Meeting, Grand Island, NE • June 19, 2013 • Ken Culp, III, Ph.D., Secretary, ACA Board of Directors
The ACA board of directors met on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, in the VIP Room of the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island, NE. The meeting was called to order by President Miller at 9:17 a.m. CDT. ACA board members present included, Culp, Esch, Higgins, Holt, Johnson, Michel, Miller, Pittman, Sheets, Shields and Stoppel. Each board member gave an update on calving, weather, field and pasture conditions and cattle sale results in his location. Schaefer was absent.
Officer’s Reports: Secretary’s Report: Culp presented printed copies of the minutes from the Fall Board of Directors’ meeting held in Platte City on April 12 & 13, 2013. Higgins moved to accept the minutes as corrected, seconded by Michel. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Esch presented the financial statement. The ACA finished the fiscal year (May 1, 2012 – April 30, 2013) with a loss of $46,762.05. Shields moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Pittman. Motion carried. ACA Foundation Report: Comer presented the Foundation report. Moved by Sheets to accept the report, seconded by Esch.

Committee Reports: Budget Committee: The proposed budget for the 2013 – 2014 fiscal year was distributed by Comer. A lengthy discussion was held regarding the fees for Commercial cows. A committee of Johnson, Holt and Culp was appointed to work with Comer to develop a proposed fee structure for Commercial cows. Report to be presented at the October board meeting. Higgins moved to accept the budget, seconded by Stoppel. Motion carried. Building & Grounds: After a discussion regarding renting the office suite in the ACA Headquarters Building, the consensus of the board was to turn over the rental of the space to a property manager in Kansas City for six months. Comer reported that one of the air conditioning units needs to be replaced. The board recessed at 10:20 am The board reconvened at 10:25 am Junior and Youth Programs: Jaclyn Upperman and Jessica Beer joined the meeting to report on the Junior National Heifer Show. Comer introduced Jessica Beer, the ACA summer intern, who is from Indiana and a student at Redlands Community College.
Upperman reported 153 head of 203 entered with 150 exhibitors. All of the contests except for team fitting have been completed. The Thursday show will begain at 8 am beginning with Prospect Steers, Progress Steers, Bulls, Chiangus Heifers. The Friday show will begin at 8:30 am. Jaclyn distributed copies of the show program booklet to everyone. Culp complimented Upperman on the outstanding quality of the program booklet. Comer commended the staff on a good event. There were 45 participants in Tuesday’s Golf Outing, which Humphrey coordinated. Both Jennifer Roach and Cheryl Minyerd also assisted with show preparation. Kelsey Culp addressed the board to review her junior career and thanked individual board members, the ACA Board of Directors, ACA staff members and the ACA for their support. Foundation Auction: Humphrey distributed printed catalogs for the benefit auction for the Foundation, that will be held this evening. Comer talked about the schedule for the benefit auction. Humphrey clarified that four of the bulls from whom semen is being offered are currently in the process of being registered as Chimaines. Humphrey also talked about consignments for the national sale in Louisville.
ACA Updates ACA Long Range Planning Committee: Comer talked about the possibility of the Board of Directors providing some direction to the LRPC; providing some specific topics on which the LRPC could focus and provide input and direction. Chairman Miller will contact each committee chair to develop a list of topics and begin to prioritize for discussion. Performance and Genetic Abnormality: Michel reported on a new (as yet unnamed) genetic abnormality that Dr. Weaber has identified. The defect involves a hoof abnormality and is amplified if a parent is a PHA carrier. Promotion and Marketing: Culp and Sheets reported that due to the adoption of both proposals submitted by the Promotion and Marketing Committee at the Spring Board Meeting, there is no additional report. Recognition Committee: Shields suggested that we recognize the 40 year members in Louisville and possibly create a new award designation. An article should be written and published in the ACJ. Show and Sale: Michel distributed a draft of a letter addressing the issue of creating a division for full-blood cattle at the national show. The letter reads as follows: At the request of the Board, the Show and Sale Committee would like to address the concern about fullblood Chianina cattle having their own specific division and nationallysponsored shows. After much thought and discussion with careful consideration for the foundation of our breed, it is our recommendation
to leave the national sponsored show divisions as they are. In no way, shape or form are we trying to penalize or promote the full-blood cattle of our breed vs. the percentage cattle. However, from a national interest, financial, and show functionality standpoint we are unable to justify the request. The Show and Sale Committee is not asking for any action to be taken on this matter, rather wants to assure the Board the membership that we hold in high regard the value and foundation of our breed. It is our recommendation to anyone wanting to promote a specific division of our breed i.e. Full Blood, Chiford, Chimaine, etc. that they start at the local / state level to increase awareness and promote this dividion and prove its sustained show numbers. We believe if the numbers become established over time and they have financial support, then we could re-address the issue in the future. The Show and Sale Committee is excited at the possibility of expanding and growing the Chianina nationally-sponsored shows and is always open to input and ideas as to how to help move the breed forward. Respectfully, Matt Michel, Chairman, ACA Show and Sale Committee Chairman Miller brought forth the issue of being able to show heifers that are short two-year olds that have not yet calved (i.e. heifers born during the summer months who have not yet calved and therefore cannot show as a cow-calf pair.) Our current rule states that heifers must be born on or after September 1, 2011 in order to show at a 2013 show. The issue was referred
to the Show and Sale Committee with the suggestion that we add another division for Summer Two Year Olds.
Old Business: Humphrey reported that a Jr. Chianina Show has been added to the Denver Show. It will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014. The arrival and release schedule still needs to be developed. In Denver, a heifer is eligible to show in multiple shows. Denver requires a minimum of 50 head to be entered. Tyler is working on sponsors for the Denver Show.
New Business: Higgins suggested that a Herd Inventory for active breeders be e-mailed to “clean up� our current data base. Esch asked each board member to think about how the ACA could fund a field rep position to cover west of the Mississippi. This might be a parttime or a contract labor position. The consensus of the board is that this is a valuable idea, if we can determine how to fund it. The Fall Board meeting is scheduled for October 25 & 26, 2013 in Platte City, MO. Culp moved that the board go into executive session, seconded by Higgins. Motion carried. Executive session commenced at 11:45 am. Executive Session was adjourned at 12:17 am. The ACA board of directors met on Friday, October 25, 2013, at the ACA Headquarters, Platte City, MO. The meeting was called to order by President Miller at 8:46 a.m. CDT. ACA board members present included Culp, Esch, Higgins, Holt, Johnson, Michel, Miller, Pittman, Schaefer, Sheets, Shields and Stoppel. Guests included Mr. & Mrs. Jim Johnson, Tyler Humphrey and Kyle Dice. Each board member gave an update on local field, crop, pasture and cattle conditions. Miller presented each board member with an ACA Board Member’s Handbook, which had been compiled by Kyle Dice. It is the responsibility of each board member to keep the Handbook updated and to pass it along to their replacement. Miller introduced Kyle Dice, who has interned with the ACA during the fall semester. Kyle will be working through the NAILE and will be working with both Tyler Humphrey and Heather Adams Counts, who will be returning to work for the ACA during the NAILE. Humphrey talked about some of the fall sales that he had attended this year. Catalogs for the National Sale were distributed. There are 8 heifers, one bred heifer and one bull to sell, plus a Pick of the Herd of Heifer Calves, 2 flushes, four embryo packages and 3 rare semen packages. Denver sale and the junior heifer show on the Hill. He talked about the Genetic Offering Sale that will be held on Saturday evening at the Doubletree Hotel. Humphrey reported that the ACJ is running about three or four ads per issues as compared to a year ago. Culp and Higgins both requested that Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Bulls be printed in the State Fair Results section of the ACJ, and to include the names and the sires of each Champion and Reserve as well. Humphrey and Dice left the meeting to travel to Bush Park Farms, Mitchell, SD with AMAA CEO John Boddicker.
Officer’s Reports: Secretary’s Report: Culp presented printed copies of the minutes from the Summer Board meeting, held in conjunction with the Junior National Heifer Show in Grand Island, NE; and the Executive Sessions of the Board meeting, held on July 2 and July 23. Stoppel moved to accept the minutes of the July 19 meeting, seconded by Pittman. Motion carried. Schaefer moved to accept the July 2 minutes as corrected, seconded by Shields. Motion carried. Johnson moved to accept the minutes as printed, seconded by Sheets. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: A Treasurer’s Report was postponed until Saturday.
Committee Reports: ACA Foundation Report: Higgins reported that the ACF has reimbursed the ACA for the legal costs involved in establishing the Foundation. The two tanks donated to the ACF had been kept in Ardmore, OK. One tank is empty and the other contains fullblood semen and embryos. The filled tank has been returned to Stroud Embryo Clinic in Weatherford, TX and will be offered at the National Sale in Louisville after it has been inventoried and checked for viability. The other tank is still being held in Ardmore and has not been returned. Junior and Youth Programs: Pittman reported 25 candidates submitted complete resumes. A round of interviews were conducted and several offers have been extended but none were accepted. Heather will be working the NAILE and coordinating the junior and show activities. Show and Sale Committee: Michel reviewed the new genetic sale in Denver as outlined by Humphrey. A $1000 jackpot for Grand Champion and $500 for Reserve Grand Champion has been secured for the youth heifer show. Denver is requiring 50 head to be entered in order to have the show. Performance and Genetic Abnormality: Johnson reported that Dr. Beaver has identified another genetic defect “DD.” (This is an extra limb.)
ACA Updates Miller reported that we have contracted with Dr. Weaber for another year to handle our Performance testing. One of our breeders has been sending his performance data directly to the ASA which is a violation of our agreement with the ASA. Miller also talked about the 50K chip which costs about $100 per animal for testing. Promotion & Marketing: Culp reminded the board that we needed to decide when we would make a computer run in order to determine the “Select Trait Leader Designation for each Composite.” We’ll run a computer sort and revisit this on Saturday. The Board recessed at 10:05 a.m. The Board reconvened at 10:17 a.m. Stoppel moved that we enter Executive Session at 10:17 a.m. Seconded by Michel. Motion carried. Executive session adjourned at 11:30 a.m. at which time the board recessed for lunch. The ACA Board Meeting reconvened at 1:01 p.m. Mr. & Mrs. Jim Johnson, fullblood breeders from Iowa, addressed the board with the concern about not registering purebred cattle. The Johnsons believe that 7/8 blood cattle are purebreds. Utilizing the ACA computer registry system, the “purebred” designation is given to cattle with three or more generations of Chianina genetics in that composite. (For example, the PCA
designation, {Purebred Chiangus} is given to animals with at least three generations of Chiangus breeding.) Mr. Johnson does not feel that the ACA is giving enough attention to full-blood or high percentage cattle. He contends that we need to increase registrations and that one way to do it is to increase the number of fullbloods registered. Meeting recessed at 1:55 p.m. Meeting reconvened at 2:02 p.m. Committee Reports (continued): Commercial dam registrations: A committee of Culp, Holt and Johnson was formed at the Grand Island meeting to review the fee structure for registering calves from Commercial and Foundation dams. Sheets moved that the board enter Executive Session, seconded by Johnson, motion carried. Executive session commences at 2:09 p.m. Sheets moved to adjourn Executive Session, seconded by Schaefer. Motion carried. Board meeting reconvened at 3:40 p.m.
Old Business: There was no old business.
New Business: Judges Short List for 2014 National Jr. Heifer Show: The discussion and decisions regarding compiling a short list of judges for the 2014 Junior National was deferred to Executive Session. Genetic Defect Testing Rules:
Michel moved that the ACA make genetic testing for sales optional, and the ACA adds a liability disclaimer to all ACA sponsored sale catalogs. Seconded by Johnson. Sheets moved to amend the motion by removing the words “at the discretion of the breeder.” Seconded by Stoppel. Amendment to the motion carried. Motion carried. General Membership Meeting in Louisville: Scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. • Secretary’s Report • Treasurer’s Report • Recognize retiring members (Johnson and Sheets) • Drawing for a ½ page ad in the ACJ • Culp will develop a list of openended questions, printed on 4 x 6 index cards, and distributed at the meeting. adjourned at 11:41 a.m. Culp identified three issues with the ACA Board Member’s ballot that should be corrected for next year. a. Candidates within each race should be listed alphabetically. b. Candidates running in a region (as opposed to at-large) may be voted upon only by ACA members from the states in that region. c. Information listed at the top of the ballot (in voting instructions) should correspond with those at the bottom in the at-large and region races. Michel moved that the minimum percentage rule read as follows: “Breeding cattle born on or after January 1, 2012 must have a minimum of 6.25% Chianina blood in order to participate in ACA National Shows and Sales. National Shows and Sales include the National Jr. Heifer Show and the National Shows and Sales in Louisville, KY. Breeding cattle with less than 6.25% Chianina blood are eligible for registration and may be exhibited at other shows.” The Michel motion was seconded by Sheets. Motion carried 7 to 4 with Culp, Higgins, Schaefer and Shields dissenting. Pittman shared information from interviews conducted among junior board officer candidates at the Junior National: • Increased communication between the adult and junior boards • The ACA will reimburse junior
board members for their blazers • Sheets and Pittman will schedule a conference call with the AJCA Executive Committee to update them on events in Louisville Holt presented the idea of creating a heifer futurity in order to promote our cattle. This idea will be referred to a committee. Miller thanked Sheets and Johnson for their contributions to the ACA Board of Directors. The ACA Board of Directors recognizes the stellar, yeoman’s work of ACA Board Chairman Miller in the absence of a CEO. The Long Range Planning Committee joined the Board meeting at 12:13 p.m. The LRP Committee members attending the meeting included Wayne Miller, John Woodroof, Lyle Sexton and Dennis Clarahan. Their report, presented by Sexton, was as follows: • Supports an Activity Fee for Juniors • What happened to the Herdsman’s Party in the Chianina Aisle in Louisville o The Herdsman’s Party violated the vendor’s agreement with the NAILE and was cancelled by NAILE. o The LRP Committee requests that this be replaced with another activity. • Remove the “For Lease” sign adjacent to the building and place it in a more visible location. • The Decatur Feed Yard (operated by Dan Dorn) to pursue the “Grow Safe” program. However, this needs

to be under the scrutiny of a greater scrutiny program. • Conducting research for a Chianina gene-specific 50K test is encouraged. • Monitor and accentuate the positives of the MARC data. What benefit are we receiving from the MARC data? • How can we add more value and recognition to a registered female? • Find a way to add value to a registered female and increased registrations should follow. • Supports the multi-breed union in this building, provided that fiscal advantages are realized and breed
identity is not compromised. Higgins asked the LRP Committee what the ACA Board could do to encourage greater participation of the Committee members. • Greater organization of meeting details • More advance notice of the meeting • Consider scheduling the meeting at a different time Culp offered to serve as a facilitator for the LRPC when his term on the board concludes.
