ACA Members Judge/Win Hoosier Beef Congress Showmanship Contest Nearly 700 youth competed in the 2014 Hoosier Beef Congress Showmanship Contest in Indianapolis the first weekend in December. ACA members Ken & Kelsey Culp and Brad & Hannah Winegardner, along with Sara Kober, had the privilege and honor to judge the prestigious contest. After age division heats, quarter finals, semi finals and finals, the judges all collaborated on the Overall Champion. AJCA member Becca Chamberlin was named the Supreme Showman. Congratulations to Becca!

Chiangus Heifer Futurity Attention all Chiangus breeders! The Chiangus Heifer Futurity is planned to be held in conjunction with the National Junior Heifer Show in Springfield, Illinois. The tentative show date is Monday, June 22. The females must be nominated by the breeder in order to participate. Cash prizes will be paid out to the top five females. In Memoriam Lester Ward
Lester E. Ward Jr., 92 of Versailles, Ohio passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday December 10, 2014 at 6:35 AM. He was born September 17, 1922 in Centerville, Indiana the son of the late Lester E. & Helen Marie (Killen) Ward Sr. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II where he was a Prisoner of War and received the Purple Heart. He was a farmer. He was a member of the Greenville American Legion Post #140, Greenville V.F.W., the American Chianina Association, the Ohio Chianina Association, the Darke County Cattlemen’s Association, & a Board Member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, a Member of the Darke County School Board, a Member of the Montgomery County JVS Board; he received numerous Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Awards; the Who’s Who Award, numerous Herdsman Awards, numerous Government Certificates, & numerous Government Recognitions. He is survived by his wife: Marlene N. (Bowman) Ward of Versailles; his children & spouses: Leslie E. & Debra Ward of Versailles, Roger K. & Danna Miller of Beamsville; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; brother & sister in law: Donald & Joann Ward of Richmond, Indiana; sisters & brothers in law: Jeraldine Osborne of Richmond, Indiana, Rozella & Eddie Garrett of Richmond, Indiana, Glenda & John Keller of Richmond, Indiana.

Bulletin Colleen Sheilds
Colleen Vallandingham Shields passed away on November 20, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood. She is survived by her son Val B. Shields and his wife Vicky Barnes Shields of Falmouth. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Avery Clinton “Tick” Shields and by her father C.S. “Stanley” Vallandingham and mother Kleo Morehead Vallandingham. She graduated in 1947 from WaltonVerona High School and was valedictorian of the class. She then went to the University of Louisville and graduated in 1951 with a Mathematics degree and honors in the class. She taught school from 1955 until the spring of 1965 when her son was born. She resumed teaching in 1974 until she retired with 27 ½ years of service at Walton-Verona High School. Before and after college, she worked in the Vallandingham family business in Walton, “The Walton Garage” Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge Agency until it closed in 1969. She served on the WaltonVerona School Board, Walton-Verona School Foundation and was inducted into the Walton-Verona Alumni Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Walton Christian Church and attended Unity Baptist Church. Tick, Colleen and Val started in the early 80’s breeding Chianina and Chiangus cattle and developed VBS Farms, a nationally known breeder and exhibitor, with one of the most predominant herds in the Southwest. Colleen loved her family, friends and students and has helped many people to fulfill their hopes and dreams.
Katherine’s Journey
On Wednesday, December 10th, Kathie decided it was her time to leave work behind and head for her Hartsburg home. What her family did not know was this would be the last time she would be leaving a place her and Garland created nearly 50 years ago. Shortly after leaving, Kathie suffered from a spontaneous coronary artery dissection, or SCAD. She lost a significant amount of blood flow and oxygen to her brain as a result of the tear. Kathie fought this battle until Thursday, December 18th, with her beloved husband Garland, children, family and grandchildren by her side. We are better people and very fortunate to have Kathie be a part of all of our lives. Mom will continue to be our guardian angel.
Katherine A. Gehrke
Katherine A. Gehrke, 72, of rural Hartsburg, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, at OSF Medical Center in Peoria. Katherine A. Gehrke was born March 8, 1942, in Monticello, the daughter of George E. and Margaret Stoerger. She was united in marriage to Garland H. Gehrke on July 8, 1961, in Bement, Ill. He survives. Also surviving Mrs. Gehrke are her children: Georgia (Todd) Lowman, Troy (Colleen) Gehrke, and Jennifer Gehrke; six granddaughters: Kelsey (Matthew) Boyer, Samantha Lowman, Danielle Gehrke, Alisha (Justin) Wahls, Rochelle Gehrke, and Haley Gehrke, one great-grandson, Isaac Gehrke; two sisters, Betty Lou (Woody) Dean and Pege (Paul) Barnes; two brothers, Rick (Lynn) Stoerger and Doug (Jody) Stoerger; and her beloved dog, Rocco. She was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Gehrke; one infant sister, Georgia Lee Stoerger; and her parents. Mrs. Gehrke graduated from Bement High School in 1960. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Mrs. Gehrke and her husband owned and operated Garland Gehrke Trucking since 1962. Memorials may be made to: Holy Family Catholic Church or American Chianina Association to support the Summer 2015 NJHS.

Optimism for the Chi Breed John Higgins, ACA Board of Directors
Optimistic. That is how I feel about the Chi breed and the direction in which it is headed. With the number of beef cattle in the United States at an all-time low and beef prices at an all-time high, the Chi breed still stands out as one of the most versatile breeds, ranging from fullblood Chianina to Chiangus, Chimaine, and Chiford hybrids. The recent success of the Dakota’s Striving for Excellence Female Sale is further proof that knowledgeable cattlemen see the value that Chianina genetics can add to a commercial program. These superior genetics have been very apparent both on the rail and in the show ring, with breeders of other breeds commenting on the incredible depth and quality of both the Chiangus and Chianina shows at the North American in Louisville. Due to the schedule change at the N.A.I.L.E., the Chi breed had less exposure than ever to fellow breeders and cattlemen. Cattle for the open show were not allowed to move into the barn until Tuesday, and junior show cattle had to either stay in tieouts for the weekend or stall in the junior area until cattle were allowed into the main barn. Because of this, many junior exhibitors did not stay for the open show. Nevertheless, the Chi breed was still extremely well represented. Both junior and open shows ran very smoothly, thanks to a great ACA staff and Junior Board of Directors. It is incredibly encouraging to see what great hands our future is in with these junior leaders and exhibitors.

The Chianina breed is under great management with a small yet efficient staff. This past fall alone, staff members have traveled over 20,000 miles and made 70 herd visits. They provide exceptional service and guidance to breeders with any questions or concerns they may have. Our breed is comprised of many fine people with different types of breeding programs and directions, and our staff is always willing to learn more about your breeding program and help with anything that you may need. That is what makes our association special: there is great support and understanding among all breeders, no matter what direction you are working toward with your herd. The Chiangus Council is another group of members that is working to improve the future of the breed by registering more cattle and turning more data on their herds in to the Association, all while encouraging other ACA members to do the same. This will only better our breed by increasing numbers and making our data more reliable. I hope to see you in the New Year, and let’s have a good representation of our breed at upcoming shows such as the National Western, Fort Worth Stock Show, and spring preview shows. Remember to keep raising great Chianina cattle. Stay the course: turn in data, register cattle, and get involved with YOUR association!

I Wish You the Best Kyle Dice, Former Director of Youth Activities/Director of Shows
By the time this publication goes to print, many of you will have already heard about my resignation. Yes, after one short year I will be pursuing another career much closer to my home in Indiana. This has undoubtedly been the most gratifying year to date for myself personally. The opportunity given to me by the Chianina Association has been unparalleled. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to not only my success, but also, the Junior programs as well. This last year our Junior programs have been turning heads from all directions. When I was first given the offer to be the Youth Activities Coordinator I was a bit unsure about the response the Junior Board would have – mainly because I was only a few years older than our junior president! Being young and fresh out of college, I was afraid that there would be some challenges in authority. Luckily, the two junior boards that I have had a privilege to work with have been nothing but a class act. Instead of questioning my authority we all came together as a team and worked to make each step better then the last. It really became apparent when we were at the Youth Beef Industry Council (YBIC) this last April. The concept of YBIC is to give the youth an opportunity to garner first hand knowledge of the industry and how it relates to the world. It is a couple of days long and included industry tours at Purina and Monsanto. It also had motivational speakers, fun games to get youth involved in meeting new people and a dance to cap it off. This was also the first official field trip as the youth advisor and with that came much stress and worry, hoping that nothing would go wrong. And nothing did. In fact, it went so well that we were starting to be the association that other

breed representatives looked at for answers. All of this came about because of the professional standard that our Junior Board held themselves up to. Throughout the whole YBIC trip other advisors and industry professionals were continually complimenting the AJCA. After YBIC I knew that we had to keep the positive momentum going throughout the whole year. And we did! The 2014 National Junior Heifer Show (NJHS) was a HUGE success for the AJCA, ACA and Chianina producers as a whole. With the addition of the Shorthorn Association in the mix we were all a little unsure of what to completely expect. However, something must have been right because still to this day I am getting compliments on the Junior National Show. We inducted new contests for the youth, gave out more awards and tried our best to give recognition where it was due. While at the NJHS I had many youth come up and ask about how to get on the Junior Board of Directors. In fact, we had one of our largest elections this year. As an advisor for a youth program I can assure you, that feeling alone, of having so many exhibitors wanting to be on a Junior Board that you are running, was worth all of the hustle and bustle of planning a National Junior Heifer Show. However, to top it all off, I had exhibitors with family traditions deeply rooted in other breed associations, ask if they could be my intern for any of the upcoming national shows. It was a great feeling having such a large election for our 2014 – 2015 Junior Board and it was an entirely joyous feeling knowing that now youth from outside
our organization are seeing the positive and progressive know the power of the team that I was working with. Wow…I can’t believe that 2015 is here and another year of great cattle and friends has come and gone. Like always, each year passes by so quickly, so juniors please take time to thank each and everyone who make it possible for you to travel and show Chi cattle. With the holidays now over, we can start traveling down the road again. If you were by the ACA booth, you saw the generous donations for the Ladies Auxiliary Silent Auction. Thank you to all who donated or bid on the items. The Silent Auction is a fundraiser that the Ladies Auxiliary does each year at Louisville, and all proceeds go towards funding the queen for the year. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!

Happy New Year from Kentucky! by Laurel Culp, AJCA Treasurer
As the season’s first snowfall hit the ground, the North American came to a conclusion, and with the end of December in sight, it’s crazy to think just how quickly this year has flown by. To me, it seems as though I was just boarding a plane to make my first ever trip to Denver, Colorado for the National Western Stock Show. Looking back at 2014, I am proud to call this an end of another successful year. For many people, a New Year’s tradition is making a resolution. If you are like me, I will get a month in, and decide that the resolution just isn’t working. This year, instead of making a resolution, I challenge each and every one of you to set goals instead. Set these goals, and GO BIG! This is my third year on the Jr. Board, and in June I was elected the AJCA Treasurer. As Treasurer, I set a HUGE goal for myself, and the outcome was phenomenal. In June, I dreamed up the idea of procuring the donation of a Junior Donation Female. By September, the plan was in the works. Talmo Ranch made achieving this goal
possible by their gracious and generous donation of this outstanding Chiangus heifer. At Louisville, my goal was finally accomplished! The Junior Board was able to raise $31,200 to help fund the 2015 Junior National Heifer Show! Thank you to everyone who generously contributed to the Donation Heifer Syndicate and thank you to Wayne and Jill Miller, Talmo Ranch, for their continued support of Chianina Juniors. I have always believed that some of the best supporters of junior beef programs are Chianina breeders. Whether you decide to set one goal for the year, or a long list of goals, remember that ambitious goals make outstanding achievements. So dream big, and if you believe in yourself and stay dedicated, these goals will become accomplishments. Good luck to everyone showing in winter jackpots and majors! Before we know it the journey to Springfield, IL for Junior Nationals will be here!

Excited to Represent the Chianina Breed! by Carson Goff, ACA National Queen
Greetings from the road! As I start my trip to Denver, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on my journey thus far as your American Chianina Association National Queen. After being crowned at Junior Nationals in Louisville, my journey began. I attended five state fairs, including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Kentucky. From there, I attended Ak-sar-ben, NAILE and the Badger Kick-Off. It was exciting for me that in every grand drive I attended this year a Chianina female was selected as supreme or reserve supreme, which is simply outstanding. I would like to congratulate all the Chianina members who have dedicated so much time, effort and finances into making our breed what it is today. It is truly the Hybrid Advantage. My January is going to be very busy as I will be heading to Denver for the first two weeks, and then the Fort Worth Stock Show later this month. I would like to wish everyone good luck and safe travels to the upcoming stock shows. I am beyond excited that Illinois is hosting the 2015 Junior Nationals here in Springfield. It is going to be an unforgettable week just like every other Junior National. I am beyond blessed with the opportunities that the Chianina Association has provided me with and I encourage anyone who needs help with events to contact me. Again, safe travels and good luck to all the members as the show season starts up again.

Thoughtful Interactions With All Creatures by Jenn Zeller
Of all the jobs there are to do on the ranch, working cattle, horseback, has to be my favorite. Fall and Winter provide no shortage of opportunities to ride, which makes this cowgirl extra happy, and happy is my default setting, y’all. One of the reasons we choose to work our cattle horseback is because it makes our horses better. But, that’s not the only reason. When you’re horseback, the interactions between the cow and the person moving them can be more thoughtful. We like to give our cows the opportunity to find the path of least resistance same with the kids, dogs, and the horses we train around here. Make the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult. Give the cow a moment to think and a place to go, and she’ll find it, without getting all wound up. You can do less to move your cows when you’re horseback. I’m up close and personal to them, and it allows me the chance to take small, babysteps on my horse, into their flight zone, thus offering them the chance to move away quietly. Being closer to them also helps me practice my awareness in all situations, because I am better able to read the cow, and help her along, so she doesn’t feel like she’s being chased. Also, It’s easier to make lateral movements on a horse than it is an ATV. Lateral movements not only make my horses better, but they allow the cow a chance to move ever so slightly, teaching them to “bend” as opposed to simply going straight to left to right. Because of our thoughtful way of going we can call

neighbors at the very last minute to come help out around here, which was the case when we ended up preg testing (last minute). Due to our ability to operate in a lowstress manner, three phone calls will bring help as soon as they can arrive. No one is yelling at the cows. No one is yelling at the help. No one is waving a flag or paddle around. You may be yelled to so as to be heard over the cacophony of moos but that’s different than being hollered at. It’s our way of going be thoughtful in every interaction you have. When we threw together our last minute pregtesting shindig this year, Old Man Winter had moved in already early, as usual which meant a couple days of riding in the snow. Riding in the snow isn’t one of my favorite things to do, even if it does involve working cattle horseback! It does however, make me grateful for the fact that I’ve learned to be aware of my horse, his feet, and what the cattle are telling me. Because I’m thoughtful on a daily basis with any horse I ride, and in my interactions with every person or critter I come across, they trust me to be an effective leader. It’s easy to know that they’ll be with me should we get into a bind... The day we moved the cows off of a river pasture, closer to home, I had to hustle my mount to get around them. It was chilly and the coming 4 year olds were really feeling good. I was headed, at a pretty good clip, down an icy,
choppy, river bank to get around a group of cows going the wrong direction, when my horse stumbled and fell to his knees. Certain I was coming off over his head, I kept my wits about me and pushed myself back upright by using his neck to balance. I stayed calm, and he stayed calm, and with the help of our hired man, who showed up with impeccable timing, we got them turned and headed up the draw towards the rest of the group. If I had chosen to panic, and not been thoughtful about how I could best help my horse, I might have lost the entire group of cows and my horse because I’d have certainly come off. During the gather, the morning of preg testing, I led my horse across what I thought was a solid spot to cross the creek and he ended up buried to his belly, struggling, to get to the other side. He busted his lip and cut his leg, in the icy, muddy bog while in the melee. Good thing I wasn’t on him or it might have been much worse! Never mind that we both ended up covered in mud! He still loves me and I won’t make that mistake again. While I feel terrible about where I chose to cross the creek, my horse came out the other side, relaxed and quiet, ready to allow me to mount up.
Had I been on him, the wreck would probably have been much worse, as the added weight might have actually gotten us stuck. I’m grateful I have a horse that will lead wherever I ask. That my friends, is not an accident. He got that way because I’m always considering what effect my body language has on him. Same with the cows be aware of them before they’re aware of you and you’ll almost always be ahead of the game. As harrowing as both those incidents were for me, they make me appreciate the good horses I’m blessed to ride, the good handling I’ve learned to provide to the critters on this outfit, and the forethought to find the positive in every situation. I’m not going to lie I don’t mind Winter even if it does mean riding might be dangerous. I’ve tried my best to build some rapport with my mounts, and the incidents above, proved to me that the relationship is a good one. So, here’s to hoping that you have built good rapport with your horses, kids, cows, friends and neighbors. You can’t ever be too thoughtful in your interactions, so, I’ll leave you with this: Think before you speak, smile when you’re mad, and take a deep breath when you’re about to lose it! Happy Trails!

The Fullblood: A Proud History, A Potential Future Doran Junek, Director of Research & Membership Relations Editor’s Note: The American Chianina Association was founded in 1972 as Fullblood Chianina cattle were making their entrance in the U.S. beef industry. Fullblood genetics can be found in the pedigrees of many of today’s herds. As with all things, we must remember where we have come from, as those roots have helped make us what we are today. We hope you enjoy this look back at the history of Fullblood Chianina cattle, as well as a look into how those genetics are utilized today. This series will continue in the March ACJ.
THE CHIANINA HISTORY The Chianina has been documented as one of the oldest breeds of domesticated breeds of cattle known to man. It is the breed depicted in the paintings and monuments of ancient Rome. The world’s largest sized breed of cattle is also how the Chianina is publicized in Italy, developed for use as draft animals and beef. Recently I spoke with a Chianina breeder in Pennsylvania that is specifically breeding Chianina cattle for a growing draft market right here in the US. This breed of cattle gets its name from the Val de Chianina, a Tuscan valley in the west central part of Italy where it was propagated. According to the Italian information I researched, the largest and most prolific Chianina came from the plains of Arezzo and Sienna, and since size was the most desirable trait in the 70’s, most of the US genetics were imported from there. In 1956 a Chianina herd book was established for 12,920 animals, under the direction of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. One of the most prominent Chianina breeders in Italy was Dr. Guccio Forteguerri, who owned the Radi herd and at one time was the president of the Italian Chianina Breeders Association. Because of United States Department of Agriculture rules forbidding importation of cattle from countries having foot and

Eight sons of Cavetto were initially available for artificial insemination in the United States. They were Fignolo, Faeno, Fego, Faul, Furioso, Festino, Filetto and Fontone. The first Chianina to arrive in the U.S. was from a bull called Diaceto. On January 31, 1972, the first Chianinasired calf was born at Tannehill Ranch, King City, California, out of an Angus X Holstein cow owned by Charles Hinkle and the Italian White Cattle Breeders.

The other avenue for obtaining full-blood Chianina semen was from Canadian breeders, as their government allowed direct importations. Starting in 1975, Italian full-blood Chianinas in Canada were imported into the U.S. The American Chianina Association was officially was formed in June 1972 in Kansas City, Mo. Previously, a group of interested cattlemen had met at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, Colo., where Dr. Jack Phillips of Blue Springs, Mo., was chosen
CHIANINA FACTS as Interim Chief Executive Officer. In Kansas City, with 600 breeders in attendance, the bylaws were adopted and the first American Chianina Association National Board of Directors was elected. Those elected by region were Sam Barr, of Kearney, Mo.; Dick Carlson, of Denver, Colo.; Luther Matthews, of Forest Hill, Tenn.; Herman Purdy, of Alexandria, Penn.; Bill Gould, of Aberdeen, S.D.; Charles Hinkle, of Monterey, Calif.; Seymour Johnson, of Indianola, Miss.; Bob Sykes, of Nicholls, Ga.; and Allan Poe, of Waxahachie, Texas. Dr. Jack Phillips was named American Chianina Association Chief Executive Officer, and the decision was made to establish a national headquarters in the Kansas City area. The first National sale took place in Kansas City in September of 1973. 60 half-blood heifers averaged $6,000 plus with the sale top being a bred half-blood heifer bringing $27,000. The first ACA sponsored show took place during the Missouri State Fair in August 1977. The first National show took place in Louisville, Ky., in 1977. Everything from quarter-bloods to Fullbloods were allowed to show. In late 1975, the Canadian government allowed the release of bulls to the U.S. for semen collection. In the spring of 1976, the first Fullblood females were allowed into the U.S. after a 4-year waiting period in Canada. Early on there was an accelerated breeding strategy in place to increase the percentage of Chianina blood from 3/4 to 7/8 to 15/16. The initial registration requirement in 1972 to register with the ACA was ½ blood. In 1975, a group of progressive breeders in the western states asked the

ACA board to consider lowering the percentage requirements to ¼ blood and this was changed at that time. In 1975, ACA staff members John Coble and Richard Koonce organized an all bull Chianina Sale in Denver during the NWSS. These bulls were ½ and ¾ blood and 18 bulls were catalogued. 15 Bulls showed up and were sold. The
sale top was two, ¾ Chianina Bulls that brought $5,000 each. The most exciting thing was the standing room only crowd estimated at over 1,000 people tp watch the sale. Just two years later, in 1977, the ACA Denver bull sale consisted of 58 head that averaged $1,530. In 1979, 62 of the nominated 89 bulls were shown and sold in the National Western Chianina Sale. An estimated 1,100 bidders and spectators crammed into the National Western Sale Center for this sale. $17,250 was the high selling bull consigned by Jerry Adamson and 62 bulls averaged a salty $3,494. Waltrip Ranch and Walter G. Mize Ranches. In putting together this short history lesson, I want to note that everyone I interviewed for this article pointed out that Mr. Mize was definitely the most stalwart supporter of the Fullblood Chianina movement. In fact, to this day Walter G. Mize Ranch still runs as many Fullblood cows as anyone in the United States. Fast forwarding to 2015, the demand for Fullblood genetics seems to have been reborn. I am happy to share after talking to several entities that there will probably be more fullblood calves born in this calendar year. I personally know of at least 10 Fullblood cows that have been flushed in the last several months and many are saying they will have more Fullbloods on the ground in 2015 than ever before. This renewed interest is definitely a positive for the Association and I look forward the continued progress.
SOUTH OF THE BORDER WITH THE FULLBLOOD CHIANINA When I started with the ACA several months ago, I didn’t realize the scarcity of Fullblood genetics. Although some will argue that this is a good thing and they have no use for these genetics, I PAGE 24 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | JANUARY 2015
would have to respectfully disagree. As an Association, I believe we have a responsibility to help promote and proliferate all the different genetic line options available within this breed of cattle. I would go as far as to argue that as we continue to grow this Association as a whole, we need those members willing to search out new genetic lines to help increase the breeding options available to our membership. The number of calls inquiring about Fullblood genetics at the ACA office would amaze you. Just in the 8 months that I have been on board, we
have assisted 3 different new entities in acquiring Fullblood genetics and continue to help them through the process along with helping established breeders acquire semen, embryos and breeding stock. The new inquiries are not just US-based. Recently, I had an interesting conversation with a past breeder of Chianina cattle based in British Columbia who is looking for a couple Fullblood bulls to get back in the business. He said he thinks it would be easier to find “Bigfoot” than a Fullblood Chi bull. I have also fielded a number of emails and Skype calls with Italian entities inquiring about the status of Fullbloods here in the United States. Through these conversations and communications, I have learned that much of the breeding stock the US herd is based upon was decimated due to disease outbreaks in the 70’s and 80’s. I learned from board members and past staff about a large herd of Fullblood cattle that existed in Mexico. In September, while in Texas making herd visits, I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico and make a herd visit to Adolfo
Trevino of Monterey, Mexico. Adolfo has approximately 1,100 Fullblood and High-percentage Chianina cattle spread over 4 ranches. Adolfo and his father started raising Chianina cattle in the 80’s. A majority of their early purchases of Chianina genetics were made from the Black Champ and Walter G. Mize operations. Adolfo’s cattle have learned to adapt quite nicely to the challenging conditions of central Mexico. When I was there in late September, the state of Monterey was just coming out of a 38-month drought that was one of the worst ever. In the 30 days previous to my visit, they received over 20 inches of rainfall, which was 19 more inches than they had received in the last 3 years. Adolfo’s cowherd is completely forage based. His cows are expected to graze very large pastures and bring in a good calf once a year. On each of his ranches, the cows are broke into two groups and twice a year his help gathers calves and ships them to a feedlot to be fed out. Mr. Trevino maintains a nucleus herd that he A.I.’s with fullblood semen from
Italy. From this nucleus herd he choses bloodlines for his other herds. In the past, Adolfo has experimented with Red Angus and SimAngus genetics on his high percentage cows but found that those cattle really didn’t work in his program. All of the cattle on Adolfo’s ranches are weighed at weaning time, replacement heifers and herd bull prospects are selected and feeder bull calves are processed, feeder heifers are spayed and quarantined for approval to be shipped to the feedyard. Recently Adolfo has started to incorporate ultrasound data collection and genomic testing into his herd management program. His north ranch is approved as an official quarantine station by the USDA in the event of potential sales of Chianina breeding cattle to the US. Adolfo is very interested in developing a US based market for his genetics. Adolfo is the President of the Mexico equivalent of the American Chianina Association. They actually manage the herdbooks of the Chianina, the
Piedmontese, the Romagnola and the Marchigiana. There are currently about 30 breeders of Chianina cattle in Mexico that participate in their association. Adolfo’s herd is the largest in Mexico. The second largest herd in located in the Yucatan Peninsula and consists of about 250 head of Fullbloods and Red Chiangus. Twice a year, Adolfo participates in cattle exhibitions to display his cattle to ranchers from across Mexico. The largest event is located in Monterey and Adolfo has won that event many times. Currently, Adolfo and I are organizing a tour for their Mexican Cattle Group members to visit the United States in June. Likewise, as the civil unrest continues to de-escalate in Mexico, Adolfo and his group are extending an opportunity for the ACA membership to visit several of their members ranches on a tour sometime in late fall of 2015 or summer of 2016. 2015 Chiangus Classic Heifer Futurity Rules and Regulations
• All Heifers must be nominated • Futurity follows ACA show requirements • All Chiangus Heifers must have at minimum of 6.25% Chianina to be eligible • The Futurity is open to both Juniors and Adults • Must be active members of the ACA • All Heifers must meet the set age requirements • Class breaks will be designated by Chiangus Classic Committee • May 1, 2015 ownership deadline • May 1, 2015 entry deadline and May 15, 2015 late entry deadline • Owner of animal at time of birth or animal’s breeder are eligible to make nominations (animals purchased in Dam or as embryos fall in this catagory) • Chiangus Classic Committee will make class breaks • All class winners will compete for Top Five Overall • All payouts will be announced prior to show and based on total nomination and entry fee money • Top Five Overall Heifers and Heifer Nominator will recieve additional premiums

Most embarrassing show moment? At Jr. Nationals in showmanship my heifer, Rae, got loose not once but twice. Favorite show animal and why? Rae, because after getting loose twice, we ended up winning the overall Jr. Showmanship at the Indiana State Fair. Why do you raise and show Chi cattle? I raise and show Chianina cattle because of my grandparents. They have a Chianina herd and they have been my favorite cattle to show every year.
Who is your mentor and why? My mentors are my grandparents, Tim and Mary Jo Dice, and my mom, Tricia Kirkpatrick. Advice to new junior starting in the Chi breed? Go to the Jr. Nationals and try it out and see if you like it. One weird habit/fact about you? I don’t know. I think I’m pretty normal. Would we find you on the wash rack or on the blower? You would find me on a blower.

American Chianina Association Board of Directors Platte City, Missouri • October 24-25, 2014 The ACA Board of Directors met Friday, October 24, 2014 at the ACA office in Platte City, Mo. ACA board members present: Culp, Esch, Higgins, Michel, Schaefer, Shields, Stoppel, Schrick, Rose. Staff members present: Boddicker, Junek & Dice. Board member absent: Miller, Winegardner. Vice Chairman Higgins called the meeting to order at 8:55 a.m. Each board member gave a general update of weather & conditions in their local area.
Officer’s Reports: Secretary’s Report:
Reports distributed for June & August meetings. Regarding the August minutes, Esch made motion to add “if needed” after heifer calf futurity line, Shields seconded. Motion carried. Regarding the June meeting Shields made motion to accept minutes with corrected name spellings, Stoppel second. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report:
Esch and John Boddicker presented financial slide show showing year to date profit & loss statements. Rose moved to approve the Treasurer’s report, Schrick second. Motion carried.
Registration Report:
Grant Process Review/Update: Junek undated the board on the status of the grant process he has been working on for the ACA. Chi-Angus Meeting Report: Junek reported on the Chi-Angus Council meeting held at the ACA office in September. Fifteen members were in attendance. Junek presented a request from the group that they want the ACA to help with. Stoppel moved to go into executive session at 10:51 a.m., Shields second. Motion carried. Meeting resumed at 12:34 p.m. Kyle presented a template for the new ACA website. Several new features & updates were shown to the board. Kyle hopes to launch the updated website shortly after NAILE. Kyle updated the board on the new changes coming to the ACJ. DigitalBeef.inc update: Dr. Joe Massey presented Digital Beef & its features to the board. ACA/Genomics Future: Junek reported about general cost and sampling possibilities for enhanced genomics testing. He will report & update at November meeting.

Schaefer made motion that we move to common base EPD, Shields second. Motion carried. Building/grounds: The down stairs has been completely cleaned out and repainted. The board agrees the basement looks very nice. John Boddicker reported on good interest and very promising outlook on renting out unused space in the office. Promotions, Benefits & Marketing: Culp reported that trait leaders will be generated. 40-year members will be recognized at the national show & sale in Louisville, KY. Junior & Youth Programs: Dice spoke about the 2014 National Junior Heifer Show and explained the Profit & Loss statement. Kyle update the board on the donation heifer that will sell as Lot A in the national sale in Louisville, KY. Show & Sale Committee: Michel reported on National sale in Louisville, KY. Junek reported the Denver sale is looking good and interest is up from years past. The board expressed concern for the interest level in the national sale. Junek requested time to make some changes and improve the sale numbers in the future.

Chuck Madaris and family of CK Cattle Company and Thomas Ellis of Circle E Chiangus once again participated in the 9th Annual It’s all Black and White Bull Sale on December 5th, 2014 in Montgomery, Alabama. It was a packed house of optimistic bull buyers in attendance and low birthweight/high performance bulls were definitely in demand. This sale included 165 Two-year old bulls of various breeds. Lot 251 – A 2 year old son of D A 100 Proof was the high seller in the Chiangus division. This deep bodied, smooth made bull caught the attention of many and eventually sold for $5750. Lot 242 – This super stout 2 year old sported an impressive -2.0 BW EPD to 114 YW EPD spread. Combining his rare performance along with his 28 Milk number caused several top cattlemen to circle this D A 100 Proof son in their sale catalog and caused him to bring $5600. Lot 291 – Tying for the second high seller in the Chiangus division was a December of 2012 son of CEF 376R 990X. This future herd sire prospect sported a 125 WW ratio along with a 113 YW ratio making him one of the high performing bulls of the sale. He also brought $5600. The Madaris and Ellis families sold a total of 50 Chiangus Bulls for an average of $4255.
