The American Chianina Journal deadline for the January/ February issue is December 1, 2014. This issue will be distributed at many of the state expos that will take place as well as the National Western Stock Show. So, if you are having a spring bull sale do not miss this opportunity!

Chiangus Council

On the second weekend in September the ACA hosted the Chiangus Council at the office in Platte City, Missouri. There were people from all over country there to discuss the future of the Chiangus breed. Jerry Ellis and Glen Klippenstein worked along with Doran Junek to make this possible. For more information please refer to the article written by Doran Junek in this issue on page 13.

Attention all Chiangus breeders! The Chiangus Heifer Futurity is planned to be held in conjunction with the National Junior Heifer Show in Springfield, Illinois. The tentative show date is Monday, June 22. The females must be nominated by the breeder in order to participate. Cash prizes will be paid out to the top five females. As the summer draws to an end, state fairs have picked their champions and the fall sales are firing up.

This is an exciting time in for breeders as they reap the rewards of their hard work, whether it is in the form of cattle you raised winning a show or bringing your new crop of cattle to auction to be appraised and purchased by cattlemen across the United States. But wait, it gets better. Cattle prices are at an all-time high and on the rise. One thing is clear in the seedstock business right now and that is the really good ones will sell high! This is an exciting time for those of you looking to market your cattle as the road ahead seems to be paved in gold!

The state fairs proved to be tough once again with many Chianina influenced females winning supreme titles at state fairs across the country. You will find complete state fair coverage in this issue of the Journal.

Fall sale season is upon us and runs like a steady stream into the spring. I am excited to get to as many sales as possible to assist you in the buying and selling of Chi cattle. I have made many heard visits this spring and summer and I’m here to tell you there are some good ones coming up for auction throughout the fall and winter. If you’re looking for something in particular, feel free to give me a call and I will try to point you in the right direction.

And just like that summer is over. The past few months we, at the ACA, have been very busy trying to make state fair tours, herd visits, schedule sales, all while putting on the National Junior Heifer Show (one of the largest in last five years I might add) and yet, still trying to avidly promote the importance of membership, registration and EPD’s. All of the long hours in the office and on the road are a testament to the dedication of our team to help ensure each one of our breeders is successful.

Now that summer is over and sale season is in full swing, it is important to keep in mind the quality that a Chianina influenced bovine can bring to your herd.

As your show director, I have been traveling many miles to shows as well as keeping up with state fairs I couldn’t make via social media. It is safe to say that Chianina influenced cattle are still contenders in the show ring no matter the level of competition.

Of course, the major event in the fall for Chianina breeders is the North American International Livestock Exposition. The NAILE is a great way to reconnect with old friends and create new ones. We look forward to working with the NAILE committee to bring you a quality Junior and Open show on the green shavings. If you will be down there be sure to make time to view the sale cattle on Wednesday, November 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the display area. The cattle will be available for viewing at that time and the ACA will be hosting a social in conjunction with the sale.

While working on your calendar be sure to look into attending the National Western Stock Show held in

Denver, Colorado. Last year we had our first Junior Show on the hill. It was a great turn out and we hope to continue growing the numbers.

Even though this is an ACA sanctioned show, the percentage rule DOES NOT APPLY. All registered heifers can show in the Junior Show on the hill. We believe by offering no percentage requirements we can cater to the needs of a variety of breeders no matter your operations focus. Along with the junior show there are also many other activities for Chianina members to partake in while at the National Western.

We will continue to have a Chianina sale however, this year it will be held on the grounds rather than at the Double Tree hotel. We believe this will create more traffic and spark more interest for the breed.

If you have younger heifers or bulls you’re trying to market then be sure to consign. Feel free to contact Tyler Humphrey or Doran Junek at the ACA for all sale/marketing questions. The pen of 3 show will still take place in Denver as well. Last year the quality was extremely impressive resulting in a very tough show.

We hope to see you all there!

Not to sound like a broken record but it is certainly a great time to be in the cattle industry. Whether you feed out cattle for a living or show every weekend, Chianina influenced cattle is the obvious choice. The last four months have flown by and there isn’t time to slow down.

The cross between a Chianina with any of the British breeds emphasizes hybrid vigor, exceptional growth rates and even makes calving easier due to the Chianina having a slender shaped head.

Successful beef production starts and ends with the cow. Chi and Chi-cross mothers provide a complete package of maternal skills full of staying power. The maternal heterosis bred into these cattle compliments the natural mothering ability of Chianina.

Thoughts on the Future of the ACA and Chi Breed Ken Culp, III, Ph.D.

The invitation to write a column for the ACJ generally rolls around only once during the term of a director. As this is the end of my second term, it is likely to be the last opportunity that I will have to put pen to paper for the ACJ. I must confess that I spent a longer than usual amount of time thinking about what kind of a message I wanted to share. There were several different types of columns that could be written. A reflective summary of the past six years would be appropriate. An update on the current state of affairs of the ACA might be interesting. A discussion of some of the issues facing the Board of Directors could be illuminating.

Ultimately, I decided that since I wouldn’t have this pulpit again, I should take full advantage of the situation. I therefore determined to share some parting thoughts and perspectives, along with a few suggestions that I respectfully make to the incoming board of directors.

Like many of you, I grew up in a family that was very communityminded. Active participation and involvement in the community was not an option in our family; it was an expectation. We lived by the credo of Abraham Lincoln: “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count.

It’s the life in your years.” The past six years have certainly been lively.

I am, therefore, grateful to Neal Branscum, Jill Miller, Rob Sheets PAGE 12 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | OCTOBER 2014

and John Woodroof; each of whom encouraged me to seek a position on the ACA Board six years ago.

While I will admit that John grossly downplayed the amount of time that serving in this role would require, I am happy to have had the opportunity to have served and hope that my time as a board member has contributed to the ACA, this breed of cattle, and the good people who breed and raise them.

I believe that the single most important decision, which is imperative to directing the future of the ACA and the Chianina breed, is to determine if the Chianina breed should focus primarily on acceptance in the show ring or on acceptance by commercial cattlemen. I truly believe that this decision is singularly most important; everything else is dependent upon this decision and will fall into place. This decision will determine the marketing focus of the Association. Is our focus on exhibitors or commercial cattlemen?

This is not to say that that Chianina cattle must be “either – or.” However, it is my contention that while commercially acceptable cattle can (or should) be acceptable and competitive in the show ring, the opposite is generally not true.

For example, if the board decides that Chianina cattle are primarily a show breed, then choices become simple. We don’t need to worry about maintaining a minimum percentage

of Chianina blood in the cattle that we register. The ACA would simply collect registration fees, document (any) Chianina parentage and issue pedigrees. Likewise, there would be little need to worry about genetic defects. Lots of club calf breeders actually select for TH, because of its correlation to hair coat quality. If we’re not providing breeding stock for commercial breeders, genetic defects aren’t terribly important because they can be managed in smaller breeding situations. Finally, if Chianina is primarily a show breed, then we don’t need to bother with performance testing. There’s no need to take any weights or measurements, because visual appearance is essentially all that counts.

However, if the decision is made to make Chianina cattle commercially acceptable, there are many other steps that need to be taken. The first is that we have to begin promoting the advantages (and there are many) of the Chiangus cow. We don’t seem to stress enough the potential of adding Chiangus genetics to the maternal side of a crossbreeding program.

These cows are functional, have tremendous longevity, have virtually no problems with udders or feet and are highly productive.

As a breed, we are in desperate need of expanding our gene pool. It is troubling to me how often we expand our genetic base by using blood from other breeds; primarily Angus and

Maine Anjou. Don’t misunderstand; I don’t have a problem with either of these breeds and utilize them, to an extent, in our own breeding program. But when some of the most frequently used sires in our herd book are from other registries, we continue to dilute the concentration of Chianina blood in our own cattle.

There are certainly advantages to using bulls from other breeds, but if we had a larger gene pool and more expansive breeding choices, we wouldn’t have to look outside our own herd book.

We need to place greater emphasis on collecting performance data.

There are simply too few breeders who routinely collect birth, weaning and yearling data on most (let alone, all) of their calves. Perhaps we should provide significant incentives or rewards to breeders who supply performance data for their entire calf crop.

We need to articulate and prove the value and importance of the pedigree. It distresses me when some of our largest breeders register only a handful of calves each year.

It concerns me when Chianina

bulls sell for five figures and aren’t registered, let alone transferred.

Each breeder has a responsibility to think globally and act locally. What is best for the ACA should also be what is best for individual breeders.

Never ask the question “Do you want this calf registered?” Rather, ask the buyer “How do you want this calf transferred?” We need to convince ourselves that registered cattle are worth more; but it will be tough to do that until we get serious about registering cattle with a significant amount of documented Chianina blood in their pedigree.

Similarly, we need to ask ourselves if the ACA will primarily be a breed registry, or a place to register primarily crossbred cattle that can’t be registered by other associations.

We currently have only a handful of breeders who are registering cattle with the PCA designation and fewer yet that offer multiple generation PCA cattle. Charles J. Burk convinced me long ago of the many virtues and advantages of breeding multiple generation Chiangus cattle. I’m not aware of anyone that is trying to do the same thing with the Chimaine

composite. Simple genetics tell us that heritability and predictability improve as a composite becomes more homogeneous.

I believe that we need to develop opportunities to market our cattle to new audiences. However, before we can do that, we must first identify our target audience. Again, this is dependent upon our initial decision. Should Chianina be bred to appeal primarily to the show ring or to commercial cattlemen?

Online sales are both a blessing and a curse! Online sales certainly have the advantage of reaching a lot of people in lots of different locations and extend an individual’s marketing efforts. But they also make it tough on state beef expos, breed sales and consignment sales because of the saturation of online sales and their accessibility to the public.

As stated earlier, these decisions come sharply into focus when the initial decision is made: Will Chianina cattle appeal primarily to the show ring or to commercial cattlemen? Perhaps the Long Range Planning Committee can focus on this issue at their next meeting.

Finally, I want to encourage the continued support of our junior program. Juniors are the lifeblood and future of any breed association or organization. We should encourage the development of new programs and activities in which juniors can participate. We have a tremendous junior national heifer show; however, our junior program should be larger than any single event.

One group of people that I would like to recognize is the ACA Ladies Auxiliary. This group works tirelessly, mostly behind the scenes, in support of the ACA and youth programs. continued on page 43 OCTOBER 2014 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | PAGE 13

ACA Board of Director Candidates Art, his wife Elizabeth, and their two daughters Kaylee and Mckynlee live on a small family farm just outside of Micro NC. Born and raised there, Art grew up working in At Large the grain, tobacco production, and beef cattle operations that the farm took part in. Art was introduced to the Chi industry by long time Mentor Sonny Batten in the late 80s, but it wasn’t until the fall of 2000 that Art bought his first Chiangus heifer from Horsley Cardinal. This daughter of Eagle Scout would make the long trip back to NC and join in with the Polled Hereford and Simmental cattle that Art’s family had raised and shown for years. This is what began Art’s passion for the Chi breed. While enjoying success in the show ring he also quickly saw the profitability in the Chi cattle with increased weaning and yearling weights, along with the longevity of the cattle.

Art would like to see the Chianina breed continue to position itself to play a larger role in the future of the beef industry. He feels that can be achieved in many different ways but one of the first would be through the juniors. There is not a better way to connect with the future of the beef industry! The more opportunities the Chi breed association has to offer to the future leaders of the industry, the better chance there is of promoting Chi cattle.

The second way is to simply get out and tell the story of the Chi breed. It begins with the breeders, as well as the board and the staff, to educate everyone they come in contact with about the great advantages of the breed. It just takes one conversation with the right person to make a difference!

Therefore, Art would like the opportunity to serve on the board to ensure that the breeders and juniors continue to have a strong infrastructure and an association they are proud to be a member of. He would greatly appreciate your vote and support.

Val Shields has lived in Falmouth, KY for over 15 years. He graduated from Eastern KY University in 1987 with a degree in Animal Science and has 30 years experience with Chianina Southeast Region genetics and farming operations. Val is past President and current Treasurer of the KY Chianina Association, lifetime member of Grant County KY Cattlemen’s Association, also a member of KY Cattlemen’s Association, NCBA, Livestock Marketing Association, NAILE Beef/ Dairy Advisory Committee, and NAILE Dairy Show Sampling Superintendent. He is currently a Marketing Specialist for Robert L. Conley Livestock in Georgetown, KY and has been married to Vicky for 15 years.

With the experience I have gained over the last 30 years, I have had the honor of working with just about every facet of the cattle business. This includes working as a cow-calf seed stock producer, producer educator in the extension service, and currently I work every day with cattle backgrounders, feedlots, and packers. We must remember that at all times the market is consumer driven. Together, as Chianina breeders, we have a great opportunity to use our genetics in the progression of our cattle industry presently and in the future.

ACA Board of Director Candidates Hello fellow cattleman. I hope all are having a good summer, what’s left of it anyway! To introduce myself, I’m Bryan Schaefer with Schaefer Chiangus. We are a family operation located At Large in the small rural town of Des Lacs, North Dakota. The operation is run with my parents, Jerry and Jean Schaefer; my brother, John Schaefer, and his wife, Danica; and my family, which includes my wife, Bridget, and our triplets, Riley, Megan and Holly who are eleven and our twins, Tyler and Kati, who will turn six in October. There is never a dull moment at our house.

Schaefer Chiangus runs approximately 300 mother cows with the majority of them being Chiangus. We have a production sale the last Saturday of March each year, which consists mostly of yearling bulls, a select set of cows and a few choice heifer calves. As we look to the future of the ACA, I believe we are beginning to head in the right direction. I still feel, as all breeders do, we need to collect as much data as we can. With all this information we can start to get better EPD numbers on our cattle. Another thing I believe would be helpful to our association and to our members is to get our commercial cattlemen more knowledge of the Chianina genetics. Our genetics can help the commercial cattle industry position itself for even more profits in these amazing times.

BRYAN SCHAEFER

Jordan Holt, his wife Amanda and daughters Haleigh (7) and Maggie (5), reside in Mina, South Dakota where the family operates as Holt Cattle Company. The cattle industry, especially Northwest Region registered seed stock and show cattle has been a part of Jordan’s life since he was born in Aberdeen, S.D. After graduating from Aberdeen Central High School, Jordan continued his education at SDSU in Brookings and Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown in the fields of Ag Business/Ag Production and Animal Science. Since then, Jordan has continued being active in raising, showing and judging cattle from local to national levels.

Jordan and his wife co-operate with Diamond C Cattle, running 350 head consisting of ChiAngus and Chi-Influenced cows for seed stock and club calf purposes with the balance being a commercial Simangus herd. The operation is based on sound breeding and management decisions to maximize performance with emphasis on bringing product to the plate at the most efficient cost. In addition to the herd management, Jordan is the co-owner and general manager of Dakota Livestock Supply, a livestock feed and animal health supply store in Aberdeen. Being able to be in on both ends of the business gives Jordan added resources and insight to different spectrums of the industry.

ChiAngus cattle are Jordan’s roots are and always be. After being a member of the ACA Board of Directors for the past 3 years, he sees the breed growing and would like to help continue the positive influence of the Chi breed on the beef industry. Today there are several breed associations promoting utilizing composite breeding and all vying for the same commercial cattlemen’s attention. As breeders, we know the great influence Chianina can add into any commercial herd and therefore we need to continue to push and promote our breeds’ significance and gain more cattlemen utilizing the hybrid.

If enabled to continue his board membership, Jordan will maintain his breed loyalty and further seek ways to build on the opportunities that are in front of us.

ACA Board of Director Candidates ERIC FLYNN At Large

Eric and his wife Adele live in Wellington, Ohio with their children, Addison, 6 and Will, 4. They are expecting another baby girl in January. Eric grew up in northern Ohio. He was very involved in 4-H, FFA and raising steers. He attended the Ohio State University – ATI, earning an Assoc. Degree in Livestock Production and Management. While in his last year of college he interned with the Quarter Circle S Ranch in Faulkton, SD where he was introduced to the Chianina breed.

After graduating from college, Eric and Adele moved to eastern Ohio where he managed a large herd of Angus cows. In 2005, they moved to South Dakota where Eric returned as a herdsman at Quarter Circle S Ranch. They started their Chi-influenced cattle herd in 2006 with the purchase of two Holt Bros. Chi cows (one of which was a 2001 model 40% chi and is still in their herd today).

After having their daughter Addison in SD, they moved back to Ohio. Eric began and is still working for Gordon Farms, Adele’s family’s grain farm. They farm approx. 1100 acres of corn, soybeans and

wheat.

Eric and Adele have been on the Lorain County Farm Bureau Board of Trustees since 2009. Eric is the District Chairman for United Producers, Inc. board of delegates and is also a member of the Penfield Township Zoning Board. He is an avid 4-H volunteer. In his free time, Eric enjoys spending time with his family and hunting.

Eric and Adele currently run approx. 60 head of Chi-influenced breeding and show cattle. They are proud of the fact that all but a few of their cattle are 12% Chi or more. They choose Chi-influenced cattle due to their multi-purpose abilities. Chi cattle can work and perform on any level, from the cow-calf operation to the packing industry to the show ring.

Eric would be honored to serve all members of the ACA and feels that his experiences living and working in the cattle industry in two different areas has given him a better perspective and understanding of the needs of breeders across the country.

Deron Johns is a 56 year old cattleman, born and raised on family commercial cow-calf operation in Bakersfield and Bishop, California. He participated in 4-H Beef projects with family raised At Large cattle. Graduated from Fresno State University in 1981 with degree in Animal Science. Deron has been involved with showing, breeding, and marketing show cattle for 50 years. Some of his areas of service include: Co-Founder of Sierra Winter Classic Jackpot (20+ Years) in Porterville, California; Founding member of Orange Belt Beef Boosters and Tulare County Cattle Drive Beef Boosters; Former Porterville Fair Board of Directors; Porterville Chamber of Commerce, Man of the Year; Co-Founder of Porterville Breakfast Rotary, Cancer Run (10+ Years); Co-Owner of Webb & Son Construction, former member of STAR Building Systems, National President’s Advisory Council.

Johns is Owner/Manager of family cattle ranching operation east of Strathmore, California. He runs a mixture of Registered, Commercial Club Calf, and Recipient Cows with extensive use of Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer practices for genetic advancement. He markets cattle thru Online Sale Services and Private Treaty. His family has shown locally, regionally, and nationally.

Deron believes that as an association we need to support our youth programs with a passion and to promote the Chianina Breed and Beef Industry. Training youth thru various programs to be the ambassadors for the breed and industry is imperative. Also, the goal of the ACA is exposing the consumers to our product.

Summer has come to an end and harvest is approaching quickly. That means one thing…Louisville is right around the corner. I hope everyone is making plans to attend the N.A.I.L.E. The ACA has been working very hard to make this an outstanding event.

Ladies, I hope you are all planning on attending our Ladies Luncheon. The “Come As You Are Luncheon” will be on Wednesday, November 19 at 11:00 am. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. We need to get as many ladies as we can involved, so please try and stop by. We always have a great time and it’s nice to get away from the barn for a little while.

Also, in this issue are the guidelines for Chi Lady of the Year. We wanted to give more women the opportunity to be nominated even if they cannot make it to Louisville.

The Chi Lady of the Year is a lady who has been active in Chi Cattle, works with the youth and is involved in her community. Please remember whoever is nominated does not have to be present at Louisville. Please email your nominations to jessicalcheesman@gmail.com before November 1, 2014.

Big Strides for the AJCA

To say it was an exciting year for the American Junior Chianina Association might be a bit of an understatement.

We have grown and are taking big strides into the future of the AJCA. We welcomed some great new additions to our staff in Platte City. Mr. Kyle Dice took the role as Director of Junior Activities/Shows last December and Mr. Doran Junek this May as Director of Research & Membership Relations.

Along with welcoming them to the office, we also had a number of “firsts” for 2014. In January, the association had its first national show at The National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. We had a great turn out for the first year and look forward to having more entries this coming January. Congratulations to Mallory Bormann of Iowa on Champion Heifer and Mason Walker of Arkansas on Reserve Champion Heifer.

When the Chianina cattle were in Fort Worth for the Stock Show and Rodeo it was an enjoyable time, especially in regards to the weather. It was 70-80 degrees while our shows were taking place in Texas. But, at that same time, everyone in the Midwest was battling one of many ice/ snowstorms the brutal winter brought with it and the consistently below freezing temperatures. Congratulations to the Grand Champion Chianina female shown by Mason Walker and the Reserve Grand Champion Chianina female shown by Kendra Elder of Texas in the Junior Show. In the Open show, congratulations to Mason Walker with his Champion Chianina female, Brandon Hagie of Iowa with his Reserve Chianina female, Gatlin Goodson of Oklahoma exhibiting the Grand Champion Chiangus female and Talmo Ranch from Georgia on Reserve Champion Chiangus female.

Junior Nationals was one for the books this year. We added to our “list of firsts” by welcoming in our first ACA National Princess, Miss Taylor Pinkerton from Indiana.

She will be accompanying our 2014-15 ACA National Queen, Miss Carson Goff from Illinois, in the show ring throughout the year. of Tennessee, Tyler Pinkerton of Indiana, and Emma Vickland of Colorado were elected on the board for their first term. Also, congratulations to Kane Aegerter of Nebraska and Leslie Rogers of Indiana on their Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Chianina Females, respectively.

The rest of the summer was definitely busy with state fairs kicking off in Mid-July. Congratulations to all the breeding cattle and steer exhibitors across the country for representing the breed at such high standards.

Looking into the future, it does not slow down too much moving into fall. There are numerous sales coming up throughout the next few months. As for the Junior Board, we will be beginning our fundraising for the 2015 Chianina Junior Nationals that will be held in Springfield, Illinois June 20-26. If you are interested in be a sponsor for any of the contests, divisions or shows during the week in Springfield, feel free to contact any of the Junior Board members. We will be releasing more information soon about the specific fundraisers we are working on.

Before we know it NAILE will be here and it will be time to head back to Louisville for the National Junior and Open Chianina Shows. The Junior Show will be held in Freedom Hall on Sunday, November 16th, the National Sale and Social on Wednesday, November 19th, and the Open Show on Thursday, November 20th back in Freedom Hall.

Cowboy Church

Fall is my favorite time of year. There’s always lots of riding, to gather bulls, to gather the herd for fall shots, gather again for shipping, and of course visits with the neighbors because they invite you to help. Labor Day has come and gone, and the weather, while warm this week, is turning cooler today. In South Dakota, snow could fly anytime now. October of 2010, we got the first snow of the year, right before the neighbors were ready to ship. The following is a story of peace, life and bliss.

Wednesday, the first snow of year flew. It started in the wee hours of the morning, and continued until about 3pm that day. It was a good day to stay inside, make jewelry, and get some work done on the computer. But that meant that Thursday there would be riding in the snow; along with colder temperatures.

I knew we were going to get to help our neighbor gather their pairs in their big pasture (about 8500 acres) since they are shipping out Thursday. I didn’t know what time we’d be heading out so I was relieved to discover that we weren’t heading out until noon on that day. Which meant we’d get a chance to thaw out a bit, and I would have time that morning to get some house-work done.

But the best laid plans of mice and men...or of cowgirls and ranchers... Just when I was settling in for a morning of peaceful cleaning; I heard from our hired-man. He

was asking if I would saddle up and help him move bulls.

Typically, we like to pull our bulls off the cows around Labor Day. I’m not sure what happened this year that kept us from that, but they’re still out with the cows and it’s past time to bring them home.

So despite the fact that it was a “balmy”, sunny, 18 degrees outside, I kind of couldn’t resist the thought of riding through a snow-filled pasture, on a good horse, to search for bulls. We were going to have to hurry if we were going to trail them home and still make it 18 miles up the road, with fresh mounts, by noon.

When I pulled my gray mare in from the corral where she’d just taken a drink, she was literally shaking she was so cold. She was lively that morning with a great cowboy walk and a long-trot meant to take you somewhere. We found six bulls and saw a golden eagle; the world was sparkling, peaceful and quiet. There were six bulls to pull - but only five made the trip home. The #9 bull is blind in his left eye, and he wouldn’t line out. So he’d run off back to the cows. I’d get him headed the right direction again but find myself out of position for a split second. That was all it took for him to run off. Again- in the wrong direction. I’ll have to make sure when I find him again, I trail a cow or two home with him. Works every time!

It was a mad rush to get something in our bellies, our

horses unsaddled and swapped for fresh mounts; I say that, and really all I did was leave my mare in the barn. Our hired man unsaddled her and caught my next mount for me.

Nuke’s one of my favorite horses to ride. Riding a stud is unlike any other ride you’ll ever take. They’re fearless; can go all day and have a spring in their step that most other horses lack. He’s sure footed and is about like sitting on a 50 gallon drum. He’s probably one of the cowiest horses on the place, which makes him extra fun.

The coolest thing about riding the big pasture is that you drive into it about 6.5 miles. And then everyone splits up and goes their separate ways, only meeting again in one of three places. We’ve all ridden the pasture several times (me the fewest of them all) but it’s pretty much the same drill every-time. Yesterday afternoon, for whatever reason, was one of the most peaceful times I’ve ever spent horseback.

The snow was glistening as it began to melt under the heat of the sun; I actually saw a frog, yes a frog, hopping

around, albeit not very fast, through the snow. I’m sure he was cold. I could hear nothing- not a car, not a plane, not a boat, not a cow, not another person’s voice. Just the breeze rustling the grass that wasn’t covered by snow. It was almost as if you could hear the earth singing to you.

Times like those, are the times when I personally feel most connected to my Creator. Every part of life seems beautiful right then; ashes to ashes, dust to dust. I may not understand sometimes, the senseless, depraved things that people do to one another. I may not understand why the happiest people often lose loved ones or why God chooses to take anyone’s soul before we believe it to be their time, but then I have a moment like I had that day- where I’m frozen in time - with sunshine on my face, a good horse under me, communing with the creation God gave us.

And for that moment, all of mankind’s depravity, the injustice that is often life, is forgotten, while I revel in the fact that I am blessed to get to do what I do. I savor those moments. And you should too. Be still. Take time to listen and enjoy the quiet.

Chianina Best of the Buckeye Exhibitors and Breeders Recognized at the Ohio State Fair The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) hosted the inaugural Best of the Buckeye shows at the Ohio State Fair, July 23- Aug. 3, 2014. The Best of the Buckeye program, coordinated by OCA in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and Ohio State Fair, had a strong show with more than 170 head of cattle nominated by youth and breeders to date.

The program recognizes top Ohio bred, born and registered calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Best of the Buckeye provides Ohio seedstock breeders with an enhanced marketing opportunity for Ohio bred, born and registered steers and heifers, creates a source of more moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and attracts new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Here at the American Chianina Association we had a chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at movie production. This past June a movie production company contacted the ACA wanting to utilize the facilities in their next upcoming short film. Daniel J. Hernandez from Big Moochie Productions was looking for an office space to be the setting. After much deliberation we decided that we would allow them to utilize our office space.

On a rainy weekend in June we opened our doors to be the set of a short film called, “The Boy Who Stayed.”

It took roughly three hours to shoot the short scene. The

short film is going to be submitted to the Austin Film Festival. Its review at the Film Festival will determine the outcome of the movie. If the movie does well then you may be seeing a small glimpse of an ACA staff member’s office on the big screen. The short film has many talented actors including Eve Plumb from The Brady Bunch.

It was a pleasure working with the movie crew. They were a class act and extremely easy to get along with. We are looking forward to hearing good reviews from the production company and we will receive a free DVD of the movie for our viewing.

Ideas for Improving Beef Cow Efficiency Bob Weaber, Ph.D., Cow/Calf Extension Specialist and Associate Professor Department of Animal Sciences and Industry

Improvement of the economic position of the farm or ranch is an ongoing process for many commercial cow-calf producers. Profitability may be enhanced by increasing the volume of production (i.e. the pounds of calves you market) and/or the value of products you sell (improving quality). The reduction of production costs, and thus breakeven prices, can also improve profitability.

For commercial beef producers, the implementation of technologies and breeding systems that increase the quality and volume of production and/or reduce input costs is essential to maintain or improve the competitive position of the operation. Profitability is influenced by these factors concurrently. Efficiency is the proportion of outputs to inputs and is frequently used by beef producers.

There are many different ‘efficiencies’ that affect beef production, especially at the cow-calf level. Some of these efficiencies are observed at the individual animal level and some observed at the system or herd level. The various efficiencies can be categorized into with measures of biological or economic efficiency. Improvement in individual animal efficiency, especially during the postweaning growing or finishing phases, may or may-not improve efficiency at the herd or system level, and may have undesirable correlated response in traits of cows.

So, why is improvement in feed efficiency important and why does the beef industry focus on it? During the growing and finishing phase of production, a 1% improvement in feed efficiency has the same economic impact as a 3% increase in rate of gain. The traits that beef producers routinely record are outputs which determine the value of product sold and not the inputs defining the cost of beef production. The inability to routinely measure feed intake and feed efficiency on large numbers of cattle has precluded the efficient application of selection despite moderate heritabilities (h2 = 0.08-0.46). for approximately 65% of total beef production costs and 60% of the total cost of calf and yearling finishing systems.

The cow-calf segment consumes about 70% of the calories; 30% are used by growing and finishing systems. Of the calories consumed in the cow-calf segment, more than half are used for maintenance.

Different Measures of Efficiency: There are a variety of measures of efficiency discussed and utilized in beef production. Some may or may-not be important to cow-calf producers. For improvements in ‘efficiency’ to positively impact profitability of a cow-calf producer, the efficiency improvement must be realized prior to the marketing endpoint of progeny. While that may seem rather obvious, members of a production sector in the beef industry often get caught up in selection for outcomes for which they have no or limited opportunity to capture the value of the genetic gain. Often that selection pressure is at the cost of selection for traits that are economically relevant to the enterprise’s market endpoint. These measures or their component traits have been shown to be heritable, so selection for improvement is possible but anticipated to be slow, requiring a decade or more to move the population a meaningful distance. A number of the measures, especially measures of biological or economic efficiency are also favorably impacted, typically, by the improvements in lowly heritable traits like longevity and fertility due to heterosis generated in structured crossbreeding systems. System efficiency improvements due to crossbreeding can be realized in 3-5 years depending on replacement rate in the herd.

Selecting to Improve Efficiency:

Role of Growth and Lactation Potential on ME efficiency and ME requirements: Mature cow weight and lactation potential play a key role in determining annual nutrient

requirements for cows. Increasing average cow mature weights from 1,000 lb to 1,400 lb, approximately the change we’ve observed over the last 30 years, increases nutrient requirements by 27%. Increasing lactation potential from 10 lb. to 30 lb. per day at peak results in a 16% increase in nutrient requirements. These increases in potential have the opportunity to be associated with increases in output, but they also have the potential to undermine a cow’s fitness in a given production environment. Increases in mature weight and lactation drive up maintenance requirements. Optimization of growth and lactation genetics, and ultimately profitability, requires understanding the marginal revenues and marginal costs associated with these attributes.

The key then is finding cows with appropriate levels of mature weight and lactation potential (or biological type) for your production environment. Note that managerial (i.e. reducing supplemental feedstuffs) or environmental (i.e. drought) changes that alter nutrient availability may substantially change the fitness of your existing cows.

Care should be taken in sire selection for production of replacement females such that their growth, mature weight and lactation potential are appropriate.

Value of Heterosis in Improving Biological Efficiency: One of the only, yet very effective ways, to improve biological efficiency of beef cattle production systems is through the use of planned crossbreeding systems to

leverage heterosis, especially maternal heterosis, and breed complementarity.

Modify Cows or Modify Environment?

Historically, supplemental feedstuffs have been relatively inexpensive compared to current costs. In fact, much of the early motivation to develop farmer owned confinement feeding systems, common in the Midwest, was to add value to coarse grains by feeding it to cattle. Present costs for supplemental feedstuffs, fertilizer and fuel inputs have many producers reconsidering their production model and moving towards systems with reduced inputs. Indeed producers are evaluating modification of the cow rather than modification of the production environment.

It seems that in the short run, the most effective way to improve efficiency at the production or herd level is through selection for cows of the appropriate biological type that fit their production environment. Further, these cows should likely be crossbred cows to leverage the benefits of maternal heterosis and breed complementarity.

In the intermediate to long run, seedstock and ultimately, commercial producers, should select for animals, via selection index, that optimize efficiency to the enterprise’s market endpoints. Such a two pronged approach leverages efficiency gains due to additive and non-additive genetics that affect animal efficiency of feed utilization as well as biological efficiency, respectively.

Why do you raise and show Chi cattle? It’s been a family tradition since the 80s and I like how much growth and performance they add to my herd along with the show ring appeal.

Who is your mentor and why? Jason Nunn. He has taught me how to clip and fit, but more important he has taught me to never get my head down if I get beat.

Advice to new junior starting in the Chi breed? Get out and make new friends. This breed is all about being one big family and making memories.

One weird habit/fact about you?

Lucky enough to have been in the Sale of Champions at the KY State Fair three out of the past five years.

Favorite NJHS memory and why?

Winning 2nd in the All-Around Contest at the 2014 National Junior Chianina Show. I think this really showed how hard I worked in all the contests and it gave me a chance to show this off.

Favorite NJHS contest and why?

Salesmanship without a doubt.

This contest not only gives me an opportunity to show my public speaking skills, but it also gives me the chance to demonstrate my knowledge of my cattle and the cattle industry.

Least favorite show task of the day?

Definitely breaking down my calf after the show.

Would you rather read a book, play cards, or fit a calf? Although I love to fit a calf, I love playing cards!

Favorite activity outside of showing: Playing basketball Pet Peeve: My biggest pet peeve is when I am working cattle with my dad and one of the cows runs through the hot wire fence.

Favorite show animal and why? My very first Pep. He was the sweetest little guy and I just loved him.

Why do you raise and show Chi cattle?

Because my family raises Chi cattle and it has given me a great opportunity to get involved in the breed.

What quality or skill do you have that you are proud of? I have a great work ethic. Although I may not be able to do something the first time I try, I will work hard until I can.

Most embarrassing show moment? I was 9 years old and showing at a jackpot show. A bee literally attacked my head, and I did a funky head bobbing dance in the middle of the show ring. Luckily my mom got it all on video.

Who is your mentor and why? My Daddy. He always helps me at the barn and has really helped me develop into the showman that I am today.

Advice to new junior starting in the Chi breed? Get involved and do as many contests as you can. You need to work hard at these, because there is nothing you can’t accomplish.

Thoughts on the Future.... continued from page 13 Since 1991, they have awarded 60 scholarships totaling $51,750!!!

Additionally, the Auxiliary sponsors the ACA Queen Contest and the newly formed ACA Princess Contest.

Their support in promoting and marketing the ACA is expansive and encompassing. I encourage everyone to participate in an ACA Auxiliary fundraiser and to support this worthwhile organization.

I want to express my heart-felt appreciation to John Boddicker, Operations Manager of the ACA, for his visionary leadership. John has been a breath of fresh air; his perspective and new approach has been invaluable. The quality and quantity of information that he provides board members is long overdue and greatly appreciated. John has tremendous experience, terrific business-sense and unparalleled people skills. This is a very rare combination and we are fortunate to have engaged his services. My only regret is that it took six years to get

him on board; his tenure with the ACA, will unfortunately, be too brief.

Jennifer Roach has faithfully served the ACA for nearly 11 years. Jennifer is the glue that holds the association together. She is a valuable watchdog and has her fingers on the pulse of the organization. Cheryl Minyard has done an outstanding job at learning a multitude of tasks and roles in the office, so that she can seamlessly step in whenever and wherever she is needed. Cheryl is very serviceoriented and keeps business running smoothly. Kyle Dice has done a great job filling a big vacancy and has continued to energize the AJCA and expand youth programs. The three new contests introduced at the 2014 Jr. National are just one example of his innovation and enthusiasm.

Tyler and Doran continue to reach out to new breeders, re-engage former breeders, and develop new markets, income sources and genetic opportunities.

I would encourage anyone to consider running for a position on the ACA Board of Directors. These six years have been a combination of being informative, educational, disappointing, interesting, frustrating but also very rewarding. The Board has faced some tough times and made some difficult decisions. While we certainly have disagreed at times, we have generally been able to avoid being disagreeable. The good times and experiences have far outweighed the bad. This is an important job and it is imperative that we have a diverse group of people, representing many different segments of the industry, guiding the work of our association.

It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve on the ACA Board of Directors for the past six years.

I thank you for the opportunity to have been of service. Best wishes to the new board of directors as they wrestle with important decisions that determine the future of our breed and association.
