Editorial Comments... Jill Bayers Hotchkiss Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you! We sincerely wish you a healthy and prosperous new Jill Hotchkiss year with greatly improved cattle markets. As I write this, it seems a long time since our last publication. Lots of things have happened since our November/December issue went to press — national and state elections, several state Hereford sales and meetings, some of the first bull sales of the season, and the AHA’s big annual meeting just to name a few. Now, the big Denver Stock Show is just around the corner. The few sales I have been to so far have been good, although averages are down. I think this was expected seeing as the cattle market in general was quite low this fall. Fortunately it is starting to rebound and most producers are not expecting the prices of the last two years. Right now those high prices are a fond memory which we hope will one day return. Lots of good state Hereford meetings around our region. I was able to attend the South Dakota banquet and sale which were well attended. I think the SDHA banquet could have been the biggest one they’ve had in recent years with over 200 people. North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas and Montana all had their annual meetings in November and December also but I haven’t heard reports on them yet. So enthusiasm for the breed is alive and well and continues to grow. In November I attended the Amer(continued on page 6)

Terri Barber New AHA President, New Board Members Elected Terri Barber, Channing, TX, was announced as the new president of the American Hereford Association (AHA) during the Annual Membership Meeting in Kansas City, MO. Barber has been involved in the Hereford business since birth. Her family owns and operates Barber Ranch, Channing, TX. “Serving as our AHA president is a prestigious honor that both humbles and inTerri Barber, 2017 AHA president spires me to serve our membership in the most effective and enlightened way possible,” Barber said. “One of the most rewarding opportunities all members of AHA can experience is serving your membership on the Board of Directors.
