The John & Lois Stilwell- Friends of the Fair Award was initiated in 2014 with the first recipients being, of course, John and Lois Stilwell. With their endless contributions of both finances and labor, the Stilwells have been a foundation and a means of success for the Klamath County Fair.

Without their generous efforts the Fair would not be what we experience today.

From working on the grounds to acquiring over $300,000 in grant money, John and Lois have done it all. They have been involved and ready whenever the need arises for as long as... well, as we would say on the ranch, “Till the cows come home!”

When not busy at the Fairgrounds the Stilwells can be found on their small farm north of Merrill where they raise hay, pasture and cattle. They have been involved with the Klamath County Fair since 2002 when they moved to Oregon from Minnesota. Having a number of grandchildren involved in 4-H was the impetus for their initial involvement. Seeing firsthand the benefits of the 4-H program and the opportunity it offers young people in the community, the Stilwells jumped in feet first and haven’t looked back. Friends of the Fair (continued from page 6 - Friends) Combining a love of the grandkids, and of the beef industry, John and Lois soon found themselves purchasing market steers for their grandchildren as 4-H projects. They didn’t have to go far. Just a short drive away in Algoma is the Country Inn Cattle Company, owned and operated

by Lee and Glenda Stilwell (John’s brother and sister-in-law), who are their preferred providers.

Their current project is their granddaughter, Kaelie Hobbs, who is a member of the Henley Beef Club. As this story is being written, Kaelie is down in California with Lee and Glenda at the California State Fair where she helps fit and show the animals for the big event. With the glitz and glamour of the State Fair in her rearview mirror

she will come home well prepared for her favorite show of all. There’s nothing like your hometown fair and we look forward to seeing Kaelie this year at the Klamath County Fair with her current market steer, “Spanky.”

The Stilwells are a shining example of what it means to give back to your

community. Their role model to our young people will reach across generations to build strong and healthy communities.

We feel honored to consider them a member of our Fair Family and are pleased that they were the first of many “Friends of the Fair” recipients.

This past year, welcomes a new set of individuals to our Friends of the Fair Family. The 2015 recipients are no strangers to the fair scene. Becky and Randy Hirschbock, owners of Bob’s Excavating, raised 3 children in the 4-H and FFA programs, raising swine and beef projects. This year finds them with an empty nest as they graduated their last child, Corrie Hirschbock from Henley High School. Following the Stilwell lead, the Hirschbocks saw the need for building a strong Fair program for our youth today. The program has been good to them and being the quality, country folks that they are, they jumped right in to give back in the best way they knew how.

The Fair Board and staff cannot thank the Hirschbock family and their employees enough for all of their continued help and support.

Trying to pin Becky down for an interview was a bit like rounding up wild cats, she is a busy lady between their 2 businesses. I finally caught up

with her on the phone and in her quiet, unassuming way she humbly stated, “It’s not about us, it’s all about the kids and we want to see it continue so we do what we can.”

Tom Hall – Advisor to Many, Friend to All Tom Hall has been a central figure at the Klamath County Fair for more years then you can shake a stick at. He is working on his second generation of students. Children of former students are now entering the classroom and reaping the benefits of an experienced sage, a molder of minds and a teacher that has learned how to draw out the very best from his students.

Hall started in 4-H when his family lived in McArthur, CA, where he attended the InterMountain Fair. As a young lad he captured the Reserve Grand Champion Market lamb and started his 4-H career with a real prize.

Hall’s earliest and maybe even best experiences with the Klamath County Fair were when his family moved to Malin. (continued on page 17 - Tom Hall)

Klamath County Fair - What we did before Facebook Folks have always sought out a way to connect with one another, a means to relieve tensions, share good company, show off their wares, compete with their skills and well just... socialize.

What we today call, Social Media!

In the recent past, the American County Fair was a burgeoning gathering place in celebration of a year well spent. A place for both rural and urban dwellers to come together, compete, educate and share the fruits of their labor upon the land and their skills and crafts that were used to survive in this great land they called home.

With the advent of social media and technology, you would have thought

these old fashioned traditions would have long fallen to the wayside and been lost to an ever changing and high

tech society, dedicated to the latest app and the lightening speed and versatility of the internet. Not so my

friend. Not much has changed through the centuries as this phenomenon has continued to grow and flourish each year. When the harvest turns ripe and our hearts yearn for the collective sharing that only a county fair can deliver... we gather.

The country comes alive as dusty pick-up trucks and well worn horsetrailers, hauling animals, produce and home baked pies converge on the local fairgrounds in each of the hundreds of counties across the nation. Seems nothing can replace the good old fashioned fun of a county fair, complete with cotton candy, food court, farm animals, competitions of skill and craft (cont. on pg. 22 - History)

You won’t want to miss this show!

Brady Goss - Raised in the northeast corner of Oregon in Wallowa County, Brady has been honing his musical craft since around the age of four. He is a world class singing piano player. (continued from page 17 - Tom Hall) After marrying his lovely wife, Nancy, and the birth of his first son, he re-entered college at Oregon State University with one goal in mind – to become an ag teacher and possibly roll that into an extension agent position in 5-10 years.

Upon graduation from OSU with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and a Masters in Education he went straight to work teaching Forestry, and later Agriculture, in Willimina, OR, all the while waiting for a teaching position to open up in Bonanza. Finally, with a year and a half of teaching on his resume, he was hired by the Klamath County School District to teach Ag in Bonanza. Coming home was a great joy that has shaped he and his wife Nancy’s life as they have raised their family, and become a strong influence in the lives of so many students. This will be his 26th year at Bonanza. His students understand that Hall demands their very best and they step up to the plate to deliver.

Teaching just seemed to stick and we are so glad it did.

A wealth of students have reaped the benefits of one man’s resolve to cultivate the minds of our young people. Through his guidance, the Bonanza FFA has excelled in leadership, and skills contests from the local to national level. He has opened their eyes to a wide world of opportunities in the field of agriculture, and its related industries.

Gearhart Events, named after the famous Gearhart Mountain that watches over the rolling grass and cattle country near Bly, Oregon, will once again be serving their wares at the 2016 Klamath County Fair. With a 20 Year anniversary under her belt, owner/operator Donna Kness comes accompanied by a wealth of experience to share with the communities of the Klamath Basin. Dishing up healthy portions of the best Indian Tacos, Fry Bread and Fried Ice Cream she holds a treasured spot in the hearts of the seasoned fair goers at the Klamath County Fair. Gearhart Event’s two vendor booths, The Bread Wagon and the Sugar Shack, will hold prominent locations in the Fair’s food court.

It all started over 20 years ago when Kness went to help out her relatives Ted, Dorothy and Raymond Sandberg for the summer with their modified camp trailer/concessions booth. By the end of summer, she had bought herself a business that has been flourishing and feeding folks at events and fairs around the Klamath Basin and beyond ever since.

Kness eventually upgraded to her current concessions trailer that was built to order with all the bells and whistles.

In 2013 She added the Sugar Shack to Gearhart Events. If you have a hankering for the sweets be sure to stop by for some of their many flavors of home-made fudge. Boasting 25-30 different choices, each promises to make your tongue spin, along with any of the other fine candy they offer.

Kness likes to keep it all down home. “We could take it to the big fairs and make a whole lot more money, but that isn’t what it’s all about. It’s about staying local, building a community and creating lasting relationships. I love what I do. I love working with fellow vendors, I love serving our customers and best of all I love all the employees I have had

over the years.” The Bread Wagon employs 8-10 people and the Sugar Shack employs 2-3 per event. Last year, unknown to Kness, one of her past workers posted a challenge on Facebook, Post if you have worked for the Bread Wagon. The response left her speechless. “It was so rewarding to hear their stories as they shared their experiences. High school and college bound students, family and friends of family, I have worked with them all and that is a real joy. Because I have been at it so long they look to me as their Fair Mother.”

Kness explained.

The business has changed and evolved through the years.

She misses Grandma Melsness, who passed away a few years back. Her infectious smile, quick wit and relentless help with the time consuming process of making Fried Ice Cream is sorely missed. Family has always played a large role and many have filled in to help when called upon. She thanks them all and cherishes the time they spend together.

Last year started a new tradition as she co-sponsored the Klamath County Fair Concert. Kness provides the Catch Pen Party Tent and is in charge of creating the ambiance, fun, and (continued on page 37 - Go Tell it on the Mountain)

She will be working hard to transform a simple tent into a cross between an old fashion barn dance and a western hoe-down to create a real “back to the country” celebration in the Catch Pen Party Tent. It will be open for the Concert After Party on Thursday Night 9:00 PM-1:30 AM and both Friday and Saturday nights between 9:00 PM-1:30 AM. When asked what she likes most about the Klamath County Fair, she answered unequivocally, “It is the Fair employees. They make it so easy to be a part of your fair.” Having worked many events at the Klamath County Fairgrounds, Kness has had the experience of working hand in hand with these fine folks and she can’t say enough about them. “They work tirelessly to maintain and serve the public, the vendors, and the participants. They go the extra mile to make it the best fair for everyone.” She compliments them highly on a job well done!

This year at the Fair when you find your tummy growling, take a stroll down through the food court. Once again you will find many options to meet whatever hankering you might have, whether it is Mexican cuisine, Asian or some of Kness’ Indian Tacos. Be sure to stop by, or give a friendly wave, and congratulate her on 20 years of feeding the tummies and warming the hearts of fair goers at the Klamath County Fair!
