General Fair Information The Grundy County Fair and Agricultural Society, Extension Staff, 4-H Youth Committee, and Superintendents shall not be responsible or liable for any accidents that may happen during the fair, nor shall they be responsible for any damage, loss, or stolen property including death or loss of livestock. To avoid possible error and to conform to the rules of the Society, read the rules carefully before making entries.

Exhibitor Camping & Overnight Policy The Grundy County Fair Board allows exhibitors to stay overnight at the fairgrounds. Fair Camping Rules must be followed. For a complete listing of camping rules and an application to reserve a camping spot please go to the Grundy County Fair Website… www.grundycountyfair.com and click on the Camping Tab. Spaces fill fast so sign up early!

General Overnight Rules and Regulations for Exhibitors are as follows: 1. All 4-H and FFA members staying overnight must have a chaperone who is at least 18 years of age and is approved by the fair board officers.

2. No chaperone may be responsible for more than 3 exhibitors.

3. All persons staying overnight must camp in the designated camping area. There will be NO sleeping in the barns.

4. All persons must be in bed by midnight. Anyone failing to observe this curfew will be required to leave the fairgrounds.

5. No bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, 4-Wheelers, Gators, Rangers or golf carts are allowed by campers on the fairgrounds.

Alcohol Policy No one is allowed to bring any beer or alcoholic beverage(s) onto the fairgrounds. Absolutely no alcohol in any barns or buildings and anyone caught will be asked to leave the buildings. Exception to the policy will be camp ground sites.

Fair Lost & Found The Fair Lost & Found can be located at the 4-H Office on the fairgrounds. Items that are not claimed by the last day of fair will be taken to the Extension Office. Items will remain in the Extension Office for a period of two weeks. Unclaimed items will be disposed of.

Complaint Filing Procedure Anyone who has a complaint must follow procedure! Complaining to your superintendent, Extension staff, or Fair Board member without following procedure will not achieve any results.

1. Complaints MUST be filed in written form and signed by the person with the complaint.

2. Complaints must be filed at the 4-H office on the fairgrounds during the week of fair. Complaints will not be accepted after the fair.

3. Complaints will be reviewed & all joint decisions of the Executive Committee of the Fair Board, CYC & Extension Staff, and Youth Committee will be final.

Grundy County 4-H & FFA Show Premiums The Grundy County Fair Association has set aside $7,000 to be distributed among the fair exhibitors. Grundy County Fair Participants are eligible for premium funds. Clover Kids will receive $1.00 per exhibit. Checks will be issued by the fair association based on the records of ribbon placing kept by superintendents and Extension staff.

CHECKS MUST BE CASHED IMMEDIATELY! ALL checks issued by the Agricultural Society (Fair Board) are VOID if they are not cashed within 60 days of the date issued. After 60 days from the date on the check, uncashed checks will become a donation to the Fair Board. If you do not wish to receive a premium check from your fair exhibits please contact the Extension Staff prior to Fair.

NEW! 2015 Building Supervision Schedules: PLEASE READ FOR NEW JOB DESCRIPTION Building Supervision Expectations & Responsibilities: __ Volunteer to help during your club’s assigned time __ Two people should be in the building during supervision. It is recommended that at least one adult is with younger members. __ Arrive 5 minutes before your shift and let someone know you are there to supervise * If a replacement does not arrive within 15 min of their assigned time please notify the Extension Office on the fairgrounds or call 319-824-6979. __ A Building Supervisor Badge will be available for you to wear during your shift. Removal of Projects 1. NEW! All exhibits & tack are released on Sunday, July 26th at 1:30 pm. Exhibitors who remove their exhibits prior to release time without proper consent of the Executive Committees will not be allowed to exhibit at the 2016 Grundy County Fair.

2. Request to remove exhibits prior to release must be made by July 1st and on file at the 4-H Extension Office. Requests will be reviewed by the CYC, an Executive Committee member of the Fair Board & 4-H Youth Committee. Exhibitor will be notified of decision. All decisions are final.

FAIR SUPERINTENDENT RESPONSIBILITIES ALL SUPERINTENDENTS: Pre Fair 1. County Youth Coordinator (CYC) will contact and confirm your position as superintendent and assistant supervisor.

2. Review Rules and classes in the Fair Book and discuss any change requests with the CYC. 3. Submit any needs or repairs in writing to the Extension Office. Requests will be forwarded to the appropriate group.

4. All purchasing power for supplies to be vested in are the decision of the Executive Committee of the Fair Board 5. It is the superintendent’s job to make sure that no alterations are made to any facilities without the permission of the Executive Committee of the Fair Board.

6. Beef, Sheep & Swine Superintendents must attend pre-fair Weigh In’s 7. Attend 1 Pre-Fair Meeting with the Fair Planning Committee 8. Attend Pre-Fair Set Up Saturday, July 18th, 2015 to help set up buildings you supervise. a. Non-Livestock/Communication Superintendents: Help set up Non-Livestock Building, Alumni Building for Judging & Stage for Communication Events. Non-Livestock Superintendents need to help find volunteers to assist with Judging day and arranging projects for display. b. Livestock Superintendents: Make proper arrangements for the event (barns: stalls, gating, etc; show arena: judging, building arrangements, table set up, etc) you supervise. DO NOT make any stall assignment changes or offer additional stalls to exhibitors without checking with the CYC. 9. Absolutely NO Show Binders leave the grounds!

During Fair 1. You are REQUIRED to be at Fair! a. Arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the weigh in/check in and event.

This gives you time to pick up your box, check on last minutes set up needs, and check in exhibitors. If there is more to set up you will need more time. b. Livestock Superintendents: 1. Be on the grounds early in the morning the first day of fair and each succeeding day of the fair to check on the species you supervise.

2. Assure that all the animals are cared for during the week.

3. If there are any animal health concerns the superintendent should notify the 4-H Fair Office.

4. Make proper arrangements for the event (judging, building arrangements, stage, table set up, etc) prior to show time.

2. Superintendents are in charge of all animals and exhibits in their department. a. Prevent as much as possible the handling of exhibits. b. Exhibit building layout is completed by the superintendent. c. Livestock stalls are assigned by 4-H staff and a layout is given to superintendent.

3. Livestock Show Sheets must be posted as soon as possible to allow families to review, everyone to make corrections and allow time to repost before the show.

4. Pick up your show box (includes: show binder, awards, name tags, etc..) from the 4-H Fair Office. Livestock Superintendents will need the show binder at check in.

5. Greet your volunteers! a.

Introduce yourself b.

Assign jobs to the volunteers (If you do not use them you will lose them.)

Volunteers can record results, announce at shows, go to office, etc…

6. Greet the Judge for your event. a.

Judges are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to the event. b.

If you do not see your judge… please let the 4-H Fair Office know and they will call them for you. c.

Instruct judges to enable them to decide all questions that may come up for consideration, in accordance with the rules & regulations specified.

7. Record results in the Show Binder. If you have any questions during the show check with the CYC. This is important! We use the binder to check results that were entered in fairentry.com 8. Announce & hand out awards when applicable.

9. Put away supplies and tear down after the show 10. Return show box, unused awards, & results to the 4-H Office immediately after the show.

CYC may call you if there are any result questions.

11. Help make this a positive experience for our youth and families the best you can.

12. Parents of exhibitors are not allowed to make award decisions or talk to the judges about changing award selection. If you have a youth in the class please contact the CYC to help make award decisions with the judges.

IOWA YOUTH CODE OF ETHICS Youth are expected to be sincere, honest, and act in sportsmanlike ways at all times. Youth represent the entire program and their behavior reflects on their parents, leaders, club, and the entire youth program. All adults involved with the youth program, leaders as wells as parents, are expected to set positive examples and serve as positive role models by what they say and do. Any youth who breaks the Code of Ethics or allows another person (adult or peer) to talk them into violating the Code of Ethics agrees to forfeit all prizes, awards, and premiums. The youth may also be prohibited from exhibiting at this and future exhibitions including the Iowa State Fair and other county, state or regional exhibitions.

Youth agree to follow these guidelines:

1. I will do my own work, appropriate for my age and physical and mental development. This includes research and writing of exhibit explanations, preparing exhibits (such as sewing, cooking, refinishing, etc.), care and grooming of animals, etc. Adult assistance should help guide and support me, not do it for me.

2. All exhibits will b e a true representation of my work. Any attempt to take credit for other’s work, alter the conformation of animals, or alter their performance is prohibited. Copyright violation or allowing others to complete your exhibit is considered misrepresentation and is prohibited.

3. I will treat all people and animals with respect. I will provide appropriate care for animals.

4. I will present exhibits that are safe for consumption. All food exhibits will be safe to exhibit and for judges to evaluate. Other exhibits will be safe for judges to evaluate and for exhibition.

5. All food animals that may be harvested immediately following the show shall be safe for consumers and shall have met all withdrawal times for all medications, and be free of volatile drug residue.

6. If any animal requires medical treatment while at the fair or exhibition, only the Official State Fair Veterinarian may administer the treatment. All medications that are administered shall be done according to the label instructions of the medication used.

7. My animal’s appearance or performance shall not be altered by any means, including medications, external applications, and surgical procedures. Any animal that is found to have changed its appearance or its performance shall be disqualified from the show, and have penalties assessed against the exhibitor, parent and/or guardian by the management of the fair or exhibition.

8. I will follow all ownership and possession rules and, if requested will provide the necessary documentation.

9. I will follow all livestock health requirements for this fair or exhibition, according to the state health requirements as printed in the Premium Book of the fair or exhibition. I will provide animal health certificates from a licensed veterinarian upon request from the management of the fair or exhibition.

10. By my entering an animal in this fair or exhibition, I am giving consent to the management of the fair or exhibition to obtain any specimens of urine, saliva, blood, or other substances from the animal to be used in testing. If the laboratory report on the analysis of any sample indicates a presence of forbidden drugs, this shall be evidence such substance has been administered to the animal either internally or externally. It is presumed that the sample tested by the laboratory to which it is sent is the one taken from the animal in question, its integrity is preserved ad all procedures of said collection and preservation, transfer to the laboratory and analysis of the sample are correct and accurate and the report received from the laboratory pertains to the sample take from the animal in question and correctly reflects the condition of the animal at the time the sample was taken, with the burden on the exhibitor, parent and/or guardian to prove otherwise.

11. I am responsible for my exhibit and I will not allow others to violate this Code on my behalf. By my entering an exhibit in this fair or exhibition I will accept any disciplinary action taken by management of this fair or exhibition for any violation of this Code of Ethics and any other rules of completion of the fair or exhibition without recourse against the fair or exhibition.

12. I want my exhibit to be an example of how to accept what life has to offer, both good and not so good, and how to live with and learn from the outcome.

Exhibits must be owned by the 4-H or FFA member unless a lease agreement is filed with the Extension Office by May 15th. Horse Lease agreement is the only accepted lease agreement at the State Fair Level.

All livestock Exhibitors will be required to wear a wristband to identify them as a livestock exhibitor. This will help our building supervisors, Fair Board, and Extension Staff easily identify someone who should not be handling the livestock.

If you are not able to take your own livestock into the show arena due to an injury or disability you may submit a request for another 4-H’er to show your animal or help you in the arena. This request must be submitted to the Youth Committee prior to Fair. Decisions of the Youth Committee are final.

To participate in Showmanship class the exhibitor must show their own animal. No substitution of livestock allowed. You may not show your sibling’s or friend’s animal.

HERDSMANSHIP The purpose of the Herdsmanship Award is to promote a cleaner & safer environment in the barns.

Fair is a place where Grundy County 4-H & FFA animals are showcased. For many people who do not know much about animals and their behavior, care, etc; everything on the fairgrounds including our 4-H and FFA members should be the best it can be!

The Herdsmanship Award will go to the top Club or Chapter. This will be judged randomly each day of the fair including show day for each species. Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, Rabbits, & Poultry will be judged two times per day of the fair including their show day. Horse will not be judged because of their short time on the grounds but Horse Exhibitors are asked to pick up the area around your trailer after the show.

Herdsmanship All exhibitors are expected to keep their stall clean during the fair. This also includes cleaning out stalls when you leave the fair. Any exhibitor who does not clean their stall will forfeit any premiums won. All exhibitors will be included in Herdsmanship Judging. See the Herdsmanship section of the fair book for rules.

Each exhibitor is limited to four market beef entries.

All market beef animals must be dehorned.

Classes will be divided into classes of no more than 10 calves according to fair weights.

Minimum fair weights will be 1000 lbs. for steers and 950 lbs. for heifers. A feeder class will be held for calves under minimum weight.

Painting, dyeing, and use of color agents on beef animals are not allowed. Exhibitors can use colored grooming aids on hooves only. Beef projects showing evidence of this will not be permitted into the show ring.

All market beef animals will be entered in the rate of gain contest. The top ten will be recognized.

Beef entered in the carcass contest will be scanned during the fair weigh-in. Scanning fee is $15.00 per head Only market animals exhibited in market classes with beginning weights are eligible for carcass class.

Grundy County Beef Producers are paying half of the scanning fee. Participants will be responsible for paying the other half of the scanning fee and must be paid before the day of the show in order to participate.

Carcass class placing will be determined with scan results and weight gain. Animals will not be slaughtered.

Dairy beef animals must be at least 50% dairy breeding to be eligible. Dairy animals will be shown in their own class with the 1st and 2nd place animals eligible to compete for grand champion animal.

Livestock Ownership, Identification &Exhibiting 1.

Exhibits must be owned by the 4-H or FFA member unless a lease agreement is filed with the Extension Office by May 15th. Horse Lease agreement is the only accepted lease agreement at the State Fair Level.

All livestock Exhibitors will be required to wear a wristband to identify them as a livestock exhibitor. This will help our building supervisors, Fair Board, and Extension Staff easily identify someone who should not be handling the livestock.

If you are not able to take your own livestock into the show arena due to an injury or disability you may submit a request for another 4-H’er to show your animal or help you in the arena. This request must be submitted to the Youth Committee prior to Fair. Decisions of the Youth Committee are final.

To participate in Showmanship class the exhibitor must show their own animal. No substitution of livestock allowed. You may not show your sibling’s or friend’s animal.

Herdsmanship All exhibitors are expected to keep their stall clean during the fair. This also includes cleaning out stalls when you leave the fair. Any exhibitor who does not clean their stall will forfeit any premiums won. All exhibitors will be included in Herdsmanship Judging. See the Herdsmanship section of the fair book for rules.

Entries are open to registered or grade dairy cattle. Exhibitors are encouraged but not required to obtain papers on grade animals making them Identified Grade Dairy Animals.

Papers may be obtained through dairy breed associations or DHI. Each entry must be the property of the exhibitor. Partnerships between the exhibitor and his/her parents or guardians will be accepted.

It is preferred that the registration papers be in the name of the exhibitor. Any name will be accepted as long as evidence can be shown that the exhibitor owns a portion of the animal and the name listed on the registration is a parent or guardian to the exhibitor.

Entries born before September 1, 2014 must be dehorned.

All dairy exhibitors must dress in white pants, and white dress shirt or county 4-H or FFA shirt.

If there is one animal in a class it will not necessarily be declared champion. However, if there is only one animal in a breed class they may compete for overall Supreme Champion even if the animal received a blue ribbon in its class and upon discretion of the judge.

Scrapie Eradication Program. All reproductively intact goats that are exhibited must be tagged with a scrapie flock tag in their ear. The animal is tagged by the 4-H’er if born and raised by them, if purchased it is tagged by the seller. If purchased, you should also receive an owner statement from the seller. Registered goats may use officially approved unique tattoo numbers instead of scrapie ear tags provided they have documentation of participation in the scrapie program from their veterinarian.

Obedience Class 1.

Exhibitor and dog experience determine class level. In future years show scores will be used to determine class level along with experience of the exhibitor and dog. A qualifying score is achieved when an exhibitor earns 170 points or more and achieves 50% of the points or better for each exercise in their class. When an exhibitor achieves this standard they must advance to the next class with the exception of Novice “B” and Graduate Novice “B”. However, an exhibitor may advance to the next level without a qualifying score. An exhibitor who does not achieve a qualifying score may remain in the same class for the following year; the lonely exception to this is for Pre-Novice “A” exhibitors who must advance to Pre-Novice “B” the next year.

If there is any doubt whether an animal is a horse or pony the superintendent will decide. Horses are animals over 57” tall (14.1 hands or greater) and ponies 57” and under (less than 14.1 hands).

Share a Halter Horse A Horseless Horse Member must be paired with a current Horse Exhibitor to exhibit in a Halter class prior to fair.

Both Exhibitors will show the Horse together with Horseless Horse member leading the Horse in the arena. A Share a Halter Horse Exhibit Form must be completed and turned in by July 1st in order to participate. English Riding Classes English Pleasure is judged on the horse’s manners and suitability for English or hunter style work. The horse should move straight, with a steady rhythm and a free flowing stride. The horse should not come behind the bit, or travel too fast. English Equitation is judged on the rider’s ability to control their horse, effective use of aids, proper attire, correct form, and cleanliness of the rider and horse all while negotiating a pattern in a style consistent with English pleasure style movement.

Western Riding Classes Western Pleasure is judged on the horse’s manners and suitability for relaxed by collected gait at a relatively slow speed. Judges also look for a calm and responsive disposition. The horse should travel on a loose rein at a constant speed. Western Horsemanship is judged on the riders ability to control their horse, effective use of aids, proper attire, correct form, and cleanliness of the rider and horse all while negotiating a pattern in a style consistent with western pleasure style movement.

Herdsmanship All exhibitors are expected to keep their stall clean during the fair. This also includes cleaning out stalls when you leave the fair. Any exhibitor who does not clean their stall will forfeit any premiums won. All exhibitors will be included in Herdsmanship Judging. See the Herdsmanship section of the fair book for rules.

Meat Goats 1.

Market/ Meat Goats must be in the exhibitors possession by May 5. Livestock ID’s must be filed on 4honline by May 15.

You may weigh up to 15 Market/ Meat goats. No bucks may be weighed in.

3.

To be eligible for exhibit the following must be completed at the county wide weigh-in May 4th. a. Ear tagging of all Market & Breeding Meat goats. Yearling are not required to have new tags if they have a previous 4-H ear tag. b. Weighing of all market goats. c. Commercial Yearlings to be entered in the Breeding Show, MUST have breeding information completed on the Goat ID form during the May 5th weigh-in. Goats without this form completed may only be exhibited in the Market Goat Show. Commercial Yearlings must be included on this form. d. All commercial yearlings must be present at the May 5th weigh-in for identification, however are not required to be weighed.

Classes open to any breed or crossbred wether or doe.

Wethers and does must have all milk teeth in normal position at check-in. Market goats must weigh a minimum of 50 lbs. No maximum.

6.

If horned, market goats must have horns tipped blunt enough to not be a safety hazard. No tipping removal of horns on the grounds.

Exhibitors may use halters, collars or collar with a short lead when showing. There will be NO driving or bracing of goats in the show ring.

8.

Scrapie Eradication Program. All reproductively intact goats that are exhibited must be tagged with a Scrapie flock tag in their ear. The animal is tagged by the 4-H’er if born and raised by the 4-Her, if purchased it is tagged by the seller. If purchased, you should also receive an owner statement from the seller. Registered goats may use officially approved unique tattoo numbers instead of scrapie ear tags provided. They have documentation of participation in the scrapie program from their veterinarian.

Wethers and does must be free of any sign of disease and external parasites or they will be disqualified.

Classes will be divided by the superintendent according to fair weights.

Market goats must be sheared within ten days prior to fair entry day. Entries must be shorn to 3/8” or less of skin above the knees and hock joints. NO painting, powdering and/or artificial coloring is allowed. Clipping of the tail is optional.

Livestock Ownership, Identification &Exhibiting 1.

Exhibits must be owned by the 4-H or FFA member unless a lease agreement is filed with the Extension Office by May 15th. Horse Lease agreement is the only accepted lease agreement at the State Fair Level.

Animals identified under exhibitors name MUST be entered at fair under the SAME exhibitor.

Livestock MUST be shown by the Grundy County 4-H or FFA member unless the member has two animals in one class. In this case another current Grundy County member may show the animal. If there are other reasons that the exhibitor cannot show the animal, they MUST submit a request in writing to the 4-H and Youth Committee with explanation for why they are unable to show their animal prior to the first day of fair.

Exhibitor Identification & Substitution 1.

All livestock Exhibitors will be required to wear a wristband to identify them as a livestock exhibitor. This will help our building supervisors, Fair Board, and Extension Staff easily identify someone who should not be handling the livestock.

2.

If you are not able to take your own livestock into the show arena due to an injury or disability you may submit a request for another 4-H’er to show your animal or help you in the arena. This request must be submitted to the Youth Committee prior to Fair. Decisions of the Youth Committee are final.

3.

To participate in Showmanship class the exhibitor must show their own animal. No substitution of livestock allowed. You may not show your sibling’s or friend’s animal.

Sportsmanship 1.

Removal of Projects 1.

NEW! All exhibits & tack are released on Sunday, July 26th at 1:30 pm. Exhibitors who remove their exhibits prior to release time without proper consent of the Executive Committees will not be allowed to exhibit at the 2016 Grundy County Fair.

Request to remove exhibits prior to release must be made by July 1st and on file at the 4-H Extension Office.

Requests will be reviewed by the CYC, an Executive Committee member of the Fair Board & 4-H Youth Committee. Exhibitor will be notified of decision. All decisions are final.

Herdsmanship All exhibitors are expected to keep their stall clean during the fair. This also includes cleaning out stalls when you leave the fair. General Livestock Show Rules & Expectations_____________ Eligibility 1.

ALL 4-H Exhibitors MUST attend at least FOUR local club meetings to be eligible to participate at Fair.

Excused absences will not count. Leaders will turn in a list prior to fair entry deadline.

All exhibitors must complete & submit fair entries on time! Failure to complete or submit fair entries will make you ineligible to exhibit at the Grundy County Fair.

Livestock Ownership, Identification &Exhibiting 1.

Exhibits must be owned by the 4-H or FFA member unless a lease agreement is filed with the Extension Office by May 15th. Horse Lease agreement is the only accepted lease agreement at the State Fair Level.

2.

Animals identified under exhibitors name MUST be entered at fair under the SAME exhibitor.

3.

Livestock MUST be shown by the Grundy County 4-H or FFA member unless the member has two animals in one class. In this case another current Grundy County member may show the animal. If there are other reasons that the exhibitor cannot show the animal, they MUST submit a request in writing to the 4-H and Youth Committee with explanation for why they are unable to show their animal prior to the first day of fair.

Exhibitor Identification & Substitution 1.

All livestock Exhibitors will be required to wear a wristband to identify them as a livestock exhibitor. This will help our building supervisors, Fair Board, and Extension Staff easily identify someone who should not be handling the livestock.

2.

If you are not able to take your own livestock into the show arena due to an injury or disability you may submit a request for another 4-H’er to show your animal or help you in the arena. This request must be submitted to the Youth Committee prior to Fair. Decisions of the Youth Committee are final.

3.

To participate in Showmanship class the exhibitor must show their own animal. No substitution of livestock allowed. You may not show your sibling’s or friend’s animal.

Acceptable Help & Groomers: a. Current Grundy County 4-H or FFA Members and immediate family members may help each other. b. Immediate Family Members (mom, dad or siblings, or step siblings), Grandparents, aunts and uncles. c. Superintendents & Youth Committee members are available to assist. d. Mentors: Someone who is not an immediate family member but has been mentoring the 4-H’er in a specific project area during the year. A mentor form must be done by July 1st. Form must include a picture and short paragraph of what the 4-H member and mentor did during the year with the project. If you plan to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair in Livestock Please see the State Fair Grooming Rules. e. NO PROFESSIONAL GROOMERS ALLOWED! Penalty for violating this rule is disqualification!

Sportsmanship 1.

ALL PARENTS & EXHIBITORS are expected to act in a sportsmanship like manner and show respect for the judges, exhibitors and superintendents. Persons not acting accordingly may be asked to leave the show, arena, or fairgrounds.

Removal of Projects 1.

NEW! All exhibits & tack are released on Sunday, July 26th at 1:30 pm. Exhibitors who remove their exhibits prior to release time without proper consent of the Executive Committees will not be allowed to exhibit at the 2016 Grundy County Fair.

2.

Request to remove exhibits prior to release must be made by July 1st and on file at the 4-H Extension Office.

Requests will be reviewed by the CYC, an Executive Committee member of the Fair Board & 4-H Youth Committee. Exhibitor will be notified of decision. All decisions are final.

Sale of any animal on fairgrounds during the week of the fair is not allowed. Animals sold or leased prior to fair are NOT released early to anyone.

SHEEP RULES 1.

Sheep must be in the Exhibitors possession by May 3, 2015. Livestock ID’s must be filed on 4honline by May 15, 2015.

2.

You may weigh-in up to 15 lambs.

3.

To be eligible for exhibit the following must have been completed at the county wide weigh-in May 3rd. a. Ear tagging of all Breeding and Market lambs. Yearlings are not required to have new tags if they have a previous year’s 4-H ear tag. b. Weighing of all market lambs. c. Ewe lambs to be entered into the Breeding Show MUST have breeding information completed on the Sheep ID form during the May 3rd weigh-in. Lambs without this form completed may only be exhibited in the Market Sheep Show. Yearling ewe lambs must be included on this form. d. All yearling ewes without a 4-H ear tag must be present at the May 3rd weigh-in for identification, but are not required to be weighed.

4.

Market lambs may be of either sex. Male lambs must be castrated prior to the May 3rd County Weigh-In.

5.

Scrapie Eradication Program. All ewe lambs and yearlings (reproductively intact animals) exhibited at the Grundy County Fair and the Iowa State Fair, must have a Scrapie Flock Ear Tag. If you or your family have your own flock or lambs, be sure they have been tagged by their owners before they leave the farm. Any ewe or yearling brought to the county fair without this ear tag, will not be eligible to show. Lambs will be checked before they are unloaded and ineligible lambs will not be allowed to unload. These tags MUST be in place for the May 4th weigh-in.

6.

Wether’s do not have to be ear tagged with Scrapie program Tags.

7.

Market lambs must be rough sheared (no more than 1-inch of wool remaining) within 10 days prior to the first day of fair. Final shearing MUST occur prior to fair. NO rough shearing will be allowed at fair. However, final clipping or trimming may be done at fair prior to the show.

8.

Breeding sheep may not be exhibited in a Market Class.

9.

Classes will be divided by the superintendent according to fair weights.

10.

Exhibitor and / or family member must be present to help check-in at the fair.

11.

An exhibitor can enter a maximum of 7 carcass lambs in the market class of which all seven can be entered in the carcass class. Lambs entered in the carcass contest will be scanned during the fair weigh-in. Entry cost is $10.00 per Lamb. Scanning fee MUST be paid at weigh in. Carcass class placing will be determined with scan results and weight gain. Animals will not be slaughtered.

Herdsmanship All exhibitors are expected to keep their stall clean during the fair. This also includes cleaning out stalls when you leave the fair. Livestock Judging Contest Superintendent: Ole Cleveland

1.

Livestock Judging Contest will be held on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015. Registration will be at 1:30 p.m. in the upper show ring. The contest will begin at 3:30 p.m.

2.

All members of 4-H and/or FFA or eligible to compete.

3.

There will be two team divisions and two divisions for individuals. The Jr. Division for individuals will include members from 9-12 years of age. A junior team will consist of four members within the Jr. age limits. The senior division will consist of individuals age 13 and up. A senior team will consist of four senior members. If a team has a mix of any combination of junior and senior members, it will be considered a senior team.

4.

Classes will be: Market Swine, Breeding Swine, Market Beef, Breeding Beef, Market Lambs and Commercial Breeding Ewes. Classes will be selected based on availability of animals at the fair.

5.

All participants will receive blue, red or white placing. Trophies will be given to Champion and Reserve Champion in each division. Results will be announced 30 minutes after the conclusion of the last class.

6.

Contestants will be allowed 10-12 minutes to view each class. There will be no talking among members participating in the contest for any reason. Team members may not talk to each other. Failure to comply with the rules will be disqualification from the contest.

Clover Kids are Kindergarten – third grade youth. Clover Kids are eligible to participate in safe, educational, and developmentally age-appropriate opportunities at the fair. All Clover Kid animal exhibits must be cooperative and NOT competitive. The following activities are in compliance with Iowa State University, ISU Extension & Outreach & Iowa 4-H Policies, regulations and guidelines.

3. Exhibitor Substitution a. Non-Livestock

In case of illness or conflict that a 4-H or FFA member is unable to be present for conference judging of non-livestock exhibits, the exhibits may be brought to the fair by another person on entry day. Exhibits will be judged as there is time and written comments will be provided to the exhibitor.

b. Communications

If the exhibitor is unable to be present for any reason they will not be eligible to participate.

c. Fashion Show

If an exhibitor is unable to be present for Fashion Show Judging Day the exhibitor may submit a video and Fashion report but are not eligible for State Fair.

4. Exhibit Rules: a. All Non-Livestock Exhibits must include a Fair Exhibit Form. The form can be included as the form itself, in a binder, or by electronic media. Check for additional requirements in food & nutrition, photography, and visual art classes. A written explanation, audio recording or video recording is to be included as part of the exhibit. Endangered and threatened plants and animals (includes insects), or songbird feathers and nests may NOT be used in any exhibits. g. Copyrighted materials and designs may not be used in an exhibit that is presented as original work by the exhibitor. Exhibitors must include permission from the copyright holder/owner when using copyrighted materials. Exhibitors must give proper credit to the original source of all materials/designs used in exhibits. (See also special rules for visual arts and general copyright information for 4-H’ers.) h. The 4-Her’s goal and applicable exhibit standards will form the basis of the evaluation process. i. Due to security, 4-H’ers are discouraged from sending items that have special meaning and historical value as the exhibit or part of an exhibit. The Iowa State Fair and Iowa State University Extension will use diligence to insure the safety of articles entered for exhibition after their arrival and placement. However, they will not be responsible for damage or loss by accident, fire, theft, etc. j. Each item in an exhibit must be securely labeled, including the anme of the county, class number, and exhibitor’s name. k. All judges’ decisions are final. l. Exhibitors who are selected for State Fair will receive a packet with an intent to participate form that needs to be completed and returned by the end of the week of country fair to the Extension Office. The packet will also include a class description for the exhibit and deadline for the exhibit to be turned in to the Extension Office for transportation to the Iowa State Fair. m. Large items selected to represent the County at State Fair is the Exhibitor’s responsibility for transporting to and from State Fair. n. Exhibits going to the State Fair need to be packaged for travel. The Grundy County Extension Office assumes no liability for articles damaged in transportation to or from the Iowa State Fair. o. ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN ELEMENTS OF DESIGN A design is a visual plan you can use to create your 4-H project. Everything you can see has a design.

When you describe something you see, you use words that tell about the lines, shapes, colors, textures, and spaces. Line, shape, color, texture, and space are the basic elements of design. The elements of design are important to everyone who works in textiles and clothing, home interiors, woodworking, photography, landscaping, architecture, foods, and the visual arts. If you understand the design elements, you will be more successful with your 4-H projects.

LINE Lines can be horizontal, vertical, dotted, zig-zag, curved, straight, diagonal, bold, or fine. Lines can show direction, lead the eye, outline an object, divide a space, and communicate a feeling or emotion.

SHAPE Shapes are made by connecting lines. Circle, square, triangle, and free form are words used to identify shapes. Line creates two-dimensional or flat shapes. When shapes are three-dimensional, we call them forms. A circle is a shape; a ball is a form. A square is a shape; a cube is a form. A drawing is a flat shape; a sculpture is a three-dimensional form.

COLOR Color is described with the words hue, value, and intensity. Hue refers to the name of the color-red or blue, for example value tells of the lightness or darkness of a hue. Intensity refers to the brightness or dullness of a hue.

TEXTURE Texture is the surface quality of an item. It’s how something feels when touched, or looks like it would feel if touched. Sandpaper is rough, velvet is smooth. A drawing of a tree stump could show rough outer bark and a smooth inner surface. Search for ways to add texture to your projects. Texture adds variety and interest.

SPACE Space refers to the area that a shape or form occupies. It also refers to the background against which we see the shape or form. Space can be defined as positive and negative. The positive space of a design is the filled space in the design- often it is the shapes that make up the design. Negative space is the background.

The negative space in design is as important as the positive area.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Some combinations of design elements (line, shape, color, texture, and space) work better than others.

Here are some guidelines to help you understand why some combinations work and others do not work as well. These guidelines: rhythm, proportion, emphasis, balance, and unity are the principles of design.

RHYTHM You have felt rhythm in music. Rhythm is also a part of things you see. It allows the eye to move from one part of a design to another part. Rhythm can be created by:  Use a contrasting color  Use a different or unusual line  Make a shape very large or very small  Use a different shape  Use a plain background space

BALANCE Balance gives a feeling of stability. There are three types of balance. Symmetrical, or formal balance, is the simplest kind. An item that is symmetrically balanced is the same on both sides. Designs that have a Radial balance have a center point. A tire, pizza, and a daisy flower are all examples of design with radial balance. When you look through a kaleidoscope, everything you see has a radial balance. Asymmetrical balance creates a feeling of equal weight on both sides, even though the sides do not look the same.

Asymmetrical designs also are called informal designs because they suggest movement and spontaneity.

Asymmetrical balance is the hardest type of balance to achieve and often takes experimenting or moving elements around until balance is achieved.

UNITY When things look right together, you have created unity or harmony. Lines and shapes that repeat each other show unity (curved lines with curved shapes). Colors that have a common hue are harmonious.

Textures that have a similar feel add to unity. But too much uniformity sometimes can be boring. At the same time, too much variety destroys unity.

IDEAS AND INSPIRATIONS Where do you get your ideas? Just as you do not copy from the encyclopedia when you write a term paper or from another person’s paper when you take a test, you should never copy another person’s design. You are what makes your designs special! Inspirations or sources for designs may come from poetry, music, nature, and you own photographs and sketches. 10302 Photography (Limit of 8 exhibits) An exhibit, either photo(s) or an educational display that shows learning about photography from choosing a camera to modifying your photo. Still photos only, not video.

Photography Special Rules: 1. Photographs may be either black and white or color. They may be processed from negatives, slides or digital cameras and computer manipulation programs. Photographs must have been taken since the previous county fair.

2. Photographs should be a minimum of 4” x 6”. Finished size (including mounting/matting) of photographs should not exceed 16” in height or width.

3. All photographs must be printed on photographic paper. Photos printed on canvas, fabric, ceramic, etc will only be accepted as part of an educational display that shows learning about photography printing techniques, display, merchandising, etc.

4. Mounted photos can be (a) flush-mounted [no board showing] on mounting board, or (b) with mount borders [window mat or flat mount directly on board]. Exhibitors may cut their own mounting boards, use ready-cut window mats or have matting done professionally. 4-Her’s are responsible for design decisions such as border, color, and size. Framed photographs (including floating frames) will not be judged.

5. Non-mounted photos may be exhibited in a clear plastic covering. These photos will be displayed in a 3 ring binder.

6. A series is a group of photographs or slides [3 to 5] that are related or tell a step-by-step story.

Photographs must be mounted together in story order or sequence. Slides should be numbered.

7. Digitally altered photos should include a copy of the photo before changes.

8. Subject matter of photographs must be in good taste and be appropriate for public display in a 4-H setting.

9. Photographs depicting unsafe practices or illegal activities will not be displayed.

10. Use the 4-H Photography Exhibit Label (revised February 2013). You do not need to include a Grundy County Fair Goal Sheet.

10303 Digital Photography A photo or series of photos submitted electronically, not printed. Photos in this class will be submitted, viewed, evaluated and displayed electronically.

Digital Photography Exhibit Special Rules: 1. Photographs may be either black and white or color.

2. Photographs will not be printed 3. Entries may be a single photo or a series of photos. A series is a group of photographs (3-5) that are related or tell a step-by-step story. Series photo entries must have all photos in the series viewable at the same time.

4. Photos entered should be submitted in the highest resolution possible. A finished file size of 1 MB – 3 MB is recommended.

5. Photos entered should be submitted in an acceptable and commonly used format for ease of viewing.

10304 Visual Art An exhibit that shows learning through original art, exploration of an art technique, or study of any other visual arts topic.

Visual Arts Special Rules: 1. Exhibits made from kits or preformed models will not be accepted. Exception: Preformed molds (greenware, whiteware) may be used to provide the appropriate surface for a process technique or application of original design.

2. If the exhibit is a finished art object, the source or inspiration of the design, design sketches, or other process for creating the object and design must be included.

3. Original works of art must be a creative expression of a design unique to the artist, or represent a significant modification to an existing design to make a new and original statement by the artist.

4. Exhibition of derivative works created by a 4-H’er is prohibited without the written permission of the original copyright holder/owner. Use of copyrighted or trademarked designs, images, logos, or materials in 4-H visual arts exhibit is prohibited unless written permission has been obtained from the copyright or trademark holder/owner. Family & Consumer Sciences 10401 Child Development An exhibit that shows learning about children. Examples: child care, growth and development, safety and health, children with special needs, and careers in child development.

10402 Clothing and Fashion An exhibit that shows learning about style, fashion, design, thrifty spending, wardrobe planning, types of fabrics, and clothing care. Exhibits may include constructed or purchased clothing and accessories. Outfits or accessories worn during Fashion Show may not be entered in this class.

10403 Consumer Management An exhibit that shows learning through savvy budgeting, comparison shopping, money management, and consumer rights and responsibilities.

10404 Food & Nutrition An exhibit that shows learning through cooking, baking, eating, and choosing healthy foods, including safety practices. Exhibits may include prepared products or educational displays. See also 4H 3023 “Inappropriate Food Exhibits for Iowa 4-H Fairs” for additional information regarding prepared and preserved food products.

Food & Nutrition Special Rules: 1. Any exhibit considered to be a food safety risk or portray a food safety risk will not be accepted, judged or displayed.

2. All food products/exhibits should be appropriate for human consumption.

3. Food product exhibits must be prepared, bake or cooked using only food grade utensils and containers.

4. Products that require refrigeration will not be accepted, judged or displayed.

5. Meat jerky products are prohibited.

6. The recipe must be included for any prepared food exhibit; credit the source of the recipe.

7. Preserved foods must include the Food Preservation Exhibit Label. Only food process after August 1, 2014 is acceptable. Current USDA and/or Iowa State University guidelines for home food preservation must be used.

8. Preserved food exhibits must include two product samples. One will be opened for evaluation and discarded; the second will be placed on display and returned to the exhibitor. All perishable food products will be discarded when removed from display.

9. Prepared foods should be placed on a firm disposable plate or flat cardboard. Place food product exhibit in a re-closeable plastic bag with entry tag fastened outside the bag. (7 cookies per plate) 10. The use of alcoholic beverages in the preparation or production of 4-H food exhibits is NOT permitted.

Exhibits may include a finished movie or video, creation of a detailed storyboard, editing technique using digital video software, production techniques, or other display to share what was learned. Copyright permission must be obtained for any non-original material included as part of a film/movie/video.

10505 Leadership An exhibit that shows learning about leadership skills and influencing others in a positive way.

3. Clothing selection gives 4-H’ers an opportunity to show their skills in evaluating design, fit, fabric quality, construction features, price and cost per wearing of clothing that they purchase. Garments which are gifts given to the 4-H’er are not eligible.

B. Functional Clothes – Clothes that assist with the task or activity, protect you from the environment, or promote safety. Clothing may be chosen for a sport such as bicycling, temperature control, or for use in hazardous situation.

C. Special Occasion Clothes – Clothing for special events such as graduation, prom, wedding, etc. Clothing is chosen to allow personal expression with thought given to future use.

GENERAL COMMUNICATION RULES 1. Educational Presentations and Working Exhibits may be given by one or more 4-H’ers.

Teams consisting of youth of mixed grades will be entered in the class of the member in the highest grade level (i.e. a team with a 5th grader and an 8th grader must be entered in the intermediate/senior class.)

2. Topics selected by the 4-H’er(s) should be an outgrowth of his/her 4-H experience(s).

Topics should be appropriate for presentation to a general audience.

3. Participants in the 4-H Communication Programs are expected to wear appropriate clothing representative of the 4-H Youth Program and/or the topic of the presentation.

4. 4-H’ers must use sanitary and safe procedures and methods at all times. Educational Presentations and Working Exhibits involving food must follow established food safety guidelines.

5. All participants are expected to comply with all copyright/trademark regulations.

Copyrighted material may not be distributed without permission.

6. 4-H’ers will not be allowed to check out any exhibits for use in presentations. Please have a separate set of supplies for your presentation.

7. All presentations will receive ribbon placing of Excellence, Merit or Recognition.

Communication entries selected to advance onto State Fair will be announced at the end of each communication event at the County Fair.

Educational Presentations Educational Presentations provide an opportunity for 4-H’ers to demonstrate communication skills by presenting knowledge, information, or a process to an audience in order to gain a desired response.

The SUGGESTED time length for presentations is:  Juniors 4-6 min. (15 maximum)  Intermediates 5-10 min. (20 maximum)  Seniors 15-20 min. (20 maximum) Presenters will be verbally told to “STOP” when they exceed the time limit.

Extemporaneous Speaking Extemporaneous speaking will encourage the development of communication skills by providing an opportunity to think, organize thoughts, prepare a speech, and respond to questions when given a limited amount of preparation time.

1. Limit one entry per 4-H’er. Must be senior 4-H’ers – Completed 9th through 12th grade.

2. Each participant will select one of the available topics 30 minutes before their assigned speaking time.

3. A preparation area will be designated with one participant admitted initially and one additional participant admitted each 15 minutes as the program progresses. A participant may not leave the preparation room until it is time to speak, nor may a participant receive help from a parent, leader or other adult or youth.

4. Plain 3”x5” note cards will be provided for each participant in the preparation room. Only notes made during the preparation period may be used.

5. Speeches must be four to six minutes in length. An additional 5 minutes will be allowed for related questions from the judge.

6. The participant will be shown time cards in an ascending order (1,2,3,4,5) by the time keeper. “Stop” will be said at 6 minutes.

7. The time keeper will introduce each participant by name. The participant will be expected to introduce his/her speech by title only.

8. Participants are not permitted to use any props, gadgets, posters or audio visuals of any sort.

9. Speeches will be evaluated on content, knowledge of the subject, organization, power of expression, voice, stage presence, general effect and response to questions.

10. A judge’s critique/conference with each participant will be included as a part of the program.

11. Participant will receive ribbon placing of Excellence, Merit or Recognition.

Working Exhibits Working Exhibits provide an opportunity for 4-H’ers to communicate, interact with, and teach an audience in an informal and experiential way.

1. Working Exhibits may be given by an individual, team, or as a club entry. Be sure that everyone involved is doing something.

2. Groups will be split into two 45 minutes sessions 3. 4-H’ers will not be allowed to check out any exhibits for use in working exhibits. Please have a separate set of supplies for your working exhibit.

4. The 4-H’ers should be prepared to talk about any step of the process of what they are teaching.

The best subjects involve action and involvement by the audience by doing, feeling, tasting, smelling, etc. Part of the judging will be based on how well you attract and involve the audience.

Be prepared to lure the audience to your exhibit by asking such questions as: “Would you like to know how to…?” or “Did you know that…?” or “Have you ever…?”

Working Exhibit participants will receive ribbon placing of Excellence, Merit or Recognition.

Share the Fun Share the Fun provides an opportunity for 4-H’errs to share their skills and talents before and audience purely for the sake of enjoyment.

1. This can be an individual or club entry. If the Share-The-Fun act involves a whole club, the following criteria must be applied to determine if the club can be entered in the Share-TheFun Program at the Iowa State Fair. At least 80 percent of the performing group must have completed 5th through 12th grade in 2015.

2. Share-The-Fun performances must not exceed 8 minutes in length.

3. Skits, songs, stunts, short one-act plays, dance, and other entertainment will be acceptable.

All performances must be appropriate for presentation to a general audience.

4. An individual may have only two entries. If an individual is involved in more than one entry, each one must vary in the talent demonstrated (this does not include accompanists).

Example: Singing a solo, duet or participating in a small vocal group are all the same talent. Therefore you can participate only once.

5. All participants must be current 4-H members (excluding accompanists).

Entries will receive a participation ribbon.

Eligible entries will be selected to represent Grundy County at State Fair (depends on allotment).

Fair Parade Decorating Contest Sponsored by Grundy County 4-H & Youth Committee

Purpose of this contest is to design and decorate a parade float Eligibility: Open to ALL Grundy County 4-H & FFA members, families, individuals, clubs and organizations.

Pre-Fair Deadlines: July 1st Intent to Participate Form is Due to the Extension Office Rules: 1. Entries may be individuals, groups, clubs, or families.

2. Each entry can be on a hayrack, trailer, pick up, or walking.

3. If a 4-H club needs a hayrack, you must request one on the intent to participate form. There is not guarantee that one will be available.

4. Each Float must include a club, group or individual name.

5. Float riders are not allowed to hang their feet over the edge of the float.

6. Float decorating is the responsibility of the individual, group, club or family.

7. Any free standing items must be secured so they do not fall on anyone.

8. The Wheelock Building will be available upon request prior to Wednesday, July 22nd for clubs to decorate.

9. Entries will be judged Wednesday, July 22nd prior to the start of the parade.

10. All entries must be removed the evening of July 22nd and all garbage from your float must be picked up.

AG AWARENESS CHALLENGE Sponsored by Grundy County Corn & Soybean Growers

The Grundy County Corn & Soybean Growers are sponsoring a Grundy County Ag Advocacy Award!

The Grundy County Corn & Soybean Growers are reorganizing and want to encourage youth to spread the word about agriculture through the sponsorship of a $50 award for a group or individual that is promoting agriculture in Grundy County.

What can you do to promote agriculture in Grundy County this year? Will you present something to a class, have an exhibit in your community or will you be doing an educational presentation on agriculture at the county fair? Just about anything goes as long as you’re telling agriculture’s story. This award is open to all Grundy County youth. The project can be anything educational and must be about agriculture-related topics or activities. Examples are: going into a classroom to educate about where food comes from, leading an activity at safety day, or teaching someone about the different types of corn diseases.

To enter into the class you need to sign up by July 1st, 2015. An information sheet will be available at the Grundy County Extension Office and will be included in the fair packet.

Grundy County Fair 2015 King & Queen Candidates Needed!

The 2015 Grundy County Fair is again sponsoring a Grundy County King and Queen Contest. The Queen will go on to represent the county at the Iowa State Fair August 13‐23, 2015. Judging at the Iowa State Fair will be August 11‐15, 2015 and crowning on Saturday, August 15th, 2015.

Candidate must be at least 16 years of age and not more than 21 years of age on August 13th.

The Grundy County Fair Queen must reside in the county she represents or an adjoining county if the majority of her ac vi es are in Grundy County. Candidates must never have been married or have had children. Each candidate must be an ac ve member of at least one service organiza on in the community such as a church group, Girl Scouts, 4‐H, etc. Eligibility is not limited to 4‐H membership.

No professional model is eligible to compete in the state compe on. Any candidate who has competed at a State Fair Finals may not compete again. It is the responsibility of each candidate to make arrangements for transporta on to and from Des Moines.

The King and Queen must be available for ac vi es throughout the week of the Grundy County Fair, July 22 – 26th, 2015.

Grundy County Fair History of the Fair Queen & King Tiffany Albers Grundy County’s very first Fair Queen is Tiffany Albers Gaffey. Tiffany and her husband Greg have made their home in Ames Iowa. They have three boys Caleb Lichty, Connor & Cohen.

Tiffany went to Drake in Des Moines and graduated in 2002. She works as a pharmacist at HyVee in Ames. Tiffany enjoys following her son Caleb’s high school activities, chasing around her son Connor, and Cohen’s arrival, which rounded out the house full of boys. Tiffany’s mom helped her make a photo book from her Fair Queen Contest and she has kept her crown in her basement & the dress she wore in her closet. Her favorite fair memories include playing mud volleyball. One year she stood by her mom when she was done and her mom did not even recognize her. Tiffany has a client that likes to call her at work and ask for the Grundy County Fair Queen.

Karla McMartin Karla McMartin Hanson grew up in Grundy County and was actively involved in 4-H with her brothers. She is married to Chad Hanson. They have children, Piper, Ava & Gretchen and live in Sioux Center, IA. Karla is a homemaker, teacher & coach. She studied elementary education and psychology at Northwestern College and graduated in 2002. Following graduation she had the priveledge of teaching 4th grade for four years and was a Student Success Specialist for a year. She enjoyed coaching junior high basketball and track, as well as volleyball at the junior high, high school and collegiate levels. She is happy to be living in the great state of Iowa. Karla’s crown is a part of the special dress-up clothes that her daughters wear. It makes an excellent princess accessory for only the most important tea parties! Karla’s favorite fair memory is showing animals with 4-H friends and spending as much time as possible at the fairgrounds. One thing she loved about 4-H is the lifelong friendships that were built over those 9 years she was involved.

Lindee Petersen Lindee Petersen Flater is a Real Estate Associate w/Pinnacle Financial Group, Inc in Cleveland, OH. She graduated with a BA in Finance with an emphasis in Real Estate from the University of Northern Iowa in 2002, married her husband, Mike Flater in 2003 and moved to Strongsville, Ohio.

They have two boys Carson & Casey who enjoy coming back to Iowa to their grandparents farms.

It was hard for her to pick just one favorite memory from fair. One that stands out the most would be driving her first figure 8 powder puff race. That was something she never dreamed she would do.

She also enjoyed spending time with her 4-H friends that she didn’t see a lot during the fair, the sheep show, family fun night and endless practices for her fair presentations. Her crown is tucked safely away in a storage container with all her high school memorabilia in the attic.

Krista Van Hauen Krista Van Hauen is the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at St. Ambrose University and recently recognized for her 100th career victory. Krista lives in Davenport, Iowa. Since being crowned Grundy County Fair Queen, Krista graduated from Waldorf College with a Bachelor of Science Degree, received her Master’s degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2008, Wellness Management in collegiate women’s basketball at Cornell College (05-06). Krista has been coaching at Bradley University (06-07), University of Northern Colorado (08-10), and presently at St. Ambrose University (10-present). Her crown sits on her dresser in a crown box.

Her favorite fair memory is the opportunity to represent Grundy County at the Iowa State Fair Queen Pageant and being named Miss Leadership at the 1999 Iowa State Fair.

Sharon Green Sharon Green Smith and her husband Gabe have settled down in Walnut, Illinois. Sharon has invested in her own business and is the owner of Walnut House Gardens & Greens, a full service florist and gift shop. She likes to come back and watch her little sister grow up in the Grundy County 4-H program. Her crown is in a box in her basement but she has fond memories of being crowned the Grundy County Fair Queen. Her favorite fair moments include her sister, Deidra’s first fair when she received her first purple rosette, when she got her own Reserve Supreme Champion ribbon with her Brown Swiss Cow and having their last family photo with their father taken at the County fair. Sharon & Gabe are expecting their first child.

Alaina Akkerman The Grundy County Fair played a big part in Alaina’s future. She was actively involved in 4-H, served as a 4-H Summer Assistant and got engaged at Family Fun night. Alaina met her husband Darren Flater at the fair and continue to make it a part of their summer. Darren & Alaina have two sons Max & Eli and live in Dike, Iowa. She received her B.A. in Communications from Wartburg and is a Member Representative for AAA in Waterloo. Alaina’s crown is stored in a shoe box. Her favorite fair memories include tipping a hog over during the swine show, having fun with working exhibits, going to the State Fair and of course meeting & marrying her husband.

Laura Tapper Mr & Mrs. Holtman married six years ago, live in Des Moines, Iowa. Laura is a Resource Devlopment Manager for Mosaic a non-profit in Des Moines that supports adults with intellectual disabilities. She oversee’s fundraising, volunteers & public relations. She has also had an opportunity to go to Germany. Laura has tucked her crown away in a 4-H box with lots of other great memories! Her favorite fair memories include winning the Rabbit Jr. Showmanship award one of the first years she showed rabbits. It was unexpected and really confirmed that something she was passionate about was also something she was good at. & Jared Gutknecht (1st Grundy County Fair King ) Fair King Jared Gutknecht married Heather Lefleur and have two children Hayden & Kane. Jared resides in Cedar Falls, Iowa and is a farmer. His highlight is working for little pay and favorite fair memory includes showing livestock.

Lexi Hach Lexi Hach is married to Kevin Juhl and lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She is a Community Health Coordinator at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Waterloo. Her highlights include: completing her nursing degree at Hawkeye Community College, studing abroad on a medical mission trip for nursing school in the Dominican Republic, completing her bachelors degree at UNI in Health Promotion and Women’s Health. She was a part of the Wellness Recreation Services Student Advisory Board, and completed her internship in Des Moines. Lexi has a masters degree from UNI in Community Health Education. While in graduate school she participated in the graduate student symposium and placed second for oral presentations. Lexi’s crown is at her parents. They have a framed picture of her from the fair queen competition and my crown and sash are still with it.

“It is hard to choose just one fair memory.” Said Lexi “One of my favorite was showing my rabbits and beating Josh Lizer, Josh had been talking up his rabbit and how it was going to outrank mine, when it came down to the judging mine placed higher than his and the phrase ‘my rabbit can beat up your rabbit’ is still an ongoing joke between us to this day.” Lexi also has great memories as fair queen handing out ribbons and trophy’s, meeting people from different 4-H clubs in the county and having the opportunity to see the variety of exhibits and shows at the fair. One of her favorite moments of that week was being selected to help in the sheep show, little did she know that part of the sheep show included random people being selected to show other 4-H’ers sheep. Having never shown sheep before, it was a pretty funny sight! she had a great time at the state fair competition that she tied for 5th with the rest of the ladies. Lexi spent the rest of the 2004 state fair at the fairgrounds as a volunteer. Overall, she had a great experience while in 4-H and still enjoy going to the fair every year. & Devan Green Devan & Carmen Duver Green farm in Conrad, Iowa. They have a daughter, Sofia. Devan’s highlights include being able to attend college receive a degree and return home to be a 5th generation family farmer. His favorite memories include: planning, set up/clean up, helping at fair with all his friends on county council. “As long as we were with each other, no job was really work!”

Valerie Whipps Valerie & her husband Brent Bovy live in Cedar Falls, Iowa. They have one child named Logan.

She is a nurse at Covenant and Pharmacy Tech at Reinbeck Pharmacy. Her highlights include going to Going to ISU, getting married and having baby. She thinks her crown is probably in dress up clothes box at my parent’s house. Her favorite fair memory includes showing pigs, showing a heifer my senior year and winning Fair Queen. & Jason Freeseman Jason is married to Pamela and lives in West Union, Iowa. He is a Tech Support Specialist with Keystone AEA in Elkader, IA. His highlights include being in charge of a 1:1 laptop program with Grades 5-12 in South Winneshiek CSD. Jason’s favorite fair memory includes being a Dj for many Fair Teen Dances

Sarah Pakala Sarah is getting married to John Rickelman from Bloomfield, IA. She currently lives in New Hartford and works for Degener-Juhl Farm Partnership a hog farm in rural Hudson. Since high school graduation in 2007, she represented the Pork industry as the 2010 Pork Youth Ambassador, and graduated from Iowa State with a Bachelors in Agriculture Studies. Her crown is currently in my old bed room back home. Sarah’s favorite fair memory was interviewing the bucket calf participants in front of the grandstands. & Brett Gutknecht Brett Gutknecht is in Quad Cities Area and is a Test Engineer for CaseIH. He graduated from Iowa State University and enjoys getting to travel to various parts of the U.S. and Brazil testing harvesting equipment. His favorite fair memory includes all the times he showed hogs and lambs with family and friends.

Kristen Whipps Kristen & her husband Dan Schrock live in Omaha, Nebraska. She is a K-5 special education teacher for Elkhorn Public Schools. She enjoys teaching special education for three years. Her highlights also include getting married and moving to Omaha. Her crown is at her parents house stored away. Kristen’s favorite fair memories include showing pigs with her sisters and cousins, being the 2007 Fair Queen, doing working exhibits and presentations with Janice DeBerg and Marissa Gutknecht, and redoing old family furniture for projects. & Matthew Kitzman Matthew is in Beaman, Iowa farming and working at Casey’s General Store as a cook. His highlights include a getting a job, helping more on the farm and learning to drive the combine.

His crown is in a tub with his 4-H record books in the attic. His favorite fair memory includes showing his pets and cattle with his two sisters.

Jennifer Moeller Jennifer & her husband Ben Pruss live in Spirit Lake, Iowa and are celebrating the birth of their first child. She is Owner of Allure Design & Publishing which includes ownership of Studio 1328 a Photography & Design business and the MoneySaver magazine. She does marketing, websites, and graphic design for buisnesses. Jennifer’s highlights include moving to the beautiful Iowa Great Lakes, meeting her husband, and the birth of her child. Her crown is at her parents with all of her other memorabilia. Her favorite fair memory was buying triplet calves to show at fair. & Tim Husak Tim is in Des Moines, Iowa and is a Pricebook Associate for Kum & Go. His highlights include conquering his fear of heights by flying for the first time & now he loves to fly. His favorite fair memory was when his dairy goat got loose and had to chase it (with other 4-H’ers help) down by the creek just south of the fairgrounds! My other favorite memory was very hard to pick!

Codie Johnson Codie is from Wellsburg, Iowa and is working as a secretary at Snitjer Grain. She studied abroad in Brazil for 6 months, participated in the Iowa and National PAS Organizations & worked with the Iowa Pork Producers. Codie’s crown is packed away with my 4-H, FFA, PAS and other awards she has received. Codie said, “My fair memory is a toss-up from being the interviewer for Bucket Bottle Calf Interviews. I guess the second would be on Wednesday being utterly exhausted from the weeks events (I was in the sheep barn shearing my lambs), but realizing that there was only two more days left of county fair and realizing that no matter how exhausted I was that there was really only two days left of being Fair Queen and my last county fair and that I needed to make the most of it!” & Wes Pakala Wes Pakala is in Reinbeck and has a career in Close Pecision Engagement Specialist/Sniper. His highlights include going through boot camp, graduating sniper school and any time he gets to come home to Grundy County. He enjoyed staying late at the fair in the sheep barn with Jared Gutknecht, Daniel Jones & Nic Grunklee getting ready for the show.

Hollie Johnson Hollie Johnson is in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Graduated from UNI with a Bachelors of Accounting and works for McGladrey. Her highights include a trip to South Africa and Graduating from college.

Hollie’s crown is at her parents in a crown box in her old room. Her favorite fair memory is interviewing the bucket calf exhibitors.
