Dear Cattlemen: Well it’s that time of year again, rush to get the sale catalog together and get those bred heifers that are ready to calve closer to home. We would like to welcome you to the Eichacker Simmentals and JK Angus bull sale and thank you for your interest in our programs. We know the choices for a seed stock supplier are numerous. We want to let you know we don’t take your faith in our programs lightly. As we strive to improve the genetics from year to year (we used our 1st Simmental in 1971) rest assured the genetic defect status and herd health is always kept in check. Once again we are excited to have the JK Angus crew be a part of the sale. They have a great set of bulls again this year and have many of the same philosophies and integrity that we try to build our programs around. We have used the term “One Stop Bull Shop” and we get many favorable comments about the variety they have to choose from when they come here. A big part of that is because of what JK Angus brings to the table, and besides Jeff’s good to have around, if you think you’re having a bad day, just call Jeff, I’ll bet something happened there that will make your day not seem so bad! On a personal note, the weather around here, like many of you, got hot and dry last summer. We had a big rain the 1st part of May then that was it for the rest of the summer. We relied on subsoil moisture Eichacker Simmental and were hauling water by the end of summer. Grandma Cathy is totally excited about our new grandson, Herdsman: Hunter, and sometime soon Paul and Lindsay will be having their hands full with twins. The insurance program we offered last year was a huge success. We cost share part of the premium Paul & Lindsay Grace on mortality insurance to make it more affordable to you because your bull purchase is a major invest605-261-5851 ment. So we will once again offer the same program. We are proud to be a part of the Allied Genetics group as it continues to grow and expand. We want to Thank Glenn Kummer and his crew, Glenn is a cooperator herd for us, last year we put embryos in his cows. He did an excellent job paying close attention to details to make it a project that went smoothly. Several of the bulls were born under their watchful eye or at least the camera’s in the calving barn. Thanks Glenn and we look forward to this spring’s calf crop. Greetings fellow producers, As I sit here, pen in hand, it’s hard to believe that 35 years have passed since we had our first bull sale, and yet I am reminded whenever I look in the mirror it must be so. My very first sale was held in Miller, SD when my good friend John Engstrom and I teamed up to offer a small group of bulls. What a learning curve it has been since! I only wish I’d have kept a diary. I can’t begin to list the names of everyone who helped to guide me along the way, but there were many and to those I say “thank you.” In many of these opening letters there is talk of the markets and good times coming. We as producers have heard this many times and know it will happen. I would just like to tell of what has happened to use in 35 years. When we started gathering data, our weaning wgts. were 600# or less and we used a lot of creep feed to achieve those weights. We fed our cows what seemed to be a large amount of corn silage and alfalfa and had trouble keeping them in good shape. This past year our weaning wts. were 700-800#. We feed our cows corn stover, bean straw, wheat straw, CRP and a little protein and they stay in good shape. We used to feed our bulls a ration containing 15-20#/head of corn silage and hay, and we struggled to achieve 1200# ywts. This group of bulls has never had more than 8# of corn/head, the silage is from corn that adjusted 9-189 bu/acre and grass hay, and our yearling wgts are pushing 1500#. We have been able to achieve this through genetics. We always try to purchase some of the

best I see sell every spring. Luckily, I’ve got some good partners with the same vision as mine so we can afford to do this. Over the years I’ve sat at many sales and watched lots of cattle sell. I see many different programs and philosophies offered. Right or wrong is every individual’s decision. We are always striving to do what we think we can do to keep us and our customers in the black. We believe in good cattle that flesh easy & yet still have the size & eye appeal that cattle feeders desire. I appreciate hearing from many of you telling me how well our calves have sold, or how well the cows are doing. It tells us we are on the right track. Insurance:

Insurance will be available sale day. This year we are going to offer mortality insurance at a reduced rate. There will be three options available and all are based off a % of the purchase price of the bull. Reduced rates are: 2 months @ 2%, 6 months @ 3%, 1 year @ 4%, normal rates are 3%, 4%, and 6% respectively. Because we are offering insurance at a reduced rate, we strongly recommend it especially for the 2 month period if the bulls remain at our place. Although the best possible care will be given, bulls will be bulls and anything is possible.

Calving Ease Score: We have put a column in with a calving ease score with 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars with 1 star being harder calving and 4 stars being the easiest calving score. The score is nothing scientific – it is just our opinions of what you could expect taking into consideration, BW, EPD’s, pedigree and structure of the bull. Do not compare the scores between breeds, for instance, don’t expect the same calving ease out of a Simmental with 3 stars as a Red Angus with 3 stars, each breed needs to be considered on their own. JK Angus bulls are marked in their footnotes as heifer bulls if we thought they would work on such. Semen Interest: Eichacker Simmentals will retain 1/4 semen interest in all bulls sold and JK Angus will be retaining 1/3 semen interest in all bulls sold. Keep in mind, generally this means absolutely nothing, it only comes into play if semen is collected and sold. Adjusted Scrotal:

Actual scrotal measurements were taken 1-232013 then adjusted to a year of age using each breeds own formula for adjusted scrotal measurements. Scrotal measurements for the JK Angus bulls are actual, not adjusted.

Feeding Arrangements & Delivery:

Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): WDA is the weight of a bull

Health: All bulls have been tested negative for BVD/PI. All cows are Johnes free. All genetic defect testing has been completed.

Homozygous Black: Thirty additional Simmental bulls are being tested for the homozygous black trait. When we receive the results we will have the updated information on our website @ www.eichackersimmentals.com or just give us a call.

We will offer to feed the bulls at no charge until April 15, 2013. At that time they will be semen tested and delivered free of charge up to 300 miles. We will assist in making the most economical arrangements possible beyond that. We are not responsible for any injury or death to the bulls while in our care.

Is in the top 10 on 127 day gain and #4 for WDA. Possibly his biggest asset may be the cow family that he comes from. being tested for Homo Black and Homo Polled.

Our U56 cow is shaking out to be a high performance cow that has a WW ratio of 118 on two natural calves, then mate her to Chamberlain and you get the weaning and yearling weight #'s that are off the chart, top 1% of the breed. My thought would be that the Lot 27 looks to be the easier calving of the 3. Lot 28, if disposition is a concern, I would not recommend this bull. The U56 cow has a tremendous udder with just the right teat size, which is one of the reasons we chose to flush her. I'm only going to write one footnote here because, honest to God, they are like peas in a pod, very similar in structure and type. We know how well everyone liked the Beef King, Sim/Red Angus bulls last year, four sons averaged over $5700. We took it one step further and flushed what we felt was our best Red Angus cow to Beef King. She is phenotypically awesome with an excellent set of numbers and a beautiful udder. She had a WW ratio of 117 on her 1st three calves. These four bulls should work excellent In any scenerio. Study the EPD's of this mating, truly amazing. They have an API index that puts them into the top 15% of the breed and a TI index in the top 1%, a pretty elite group!

Explanation of ASA’s New EPD Evaluations: Presenting Fall 2012 EPDs on a NEW BASE: The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evaluation of the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry – a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world. As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first, however, over time we will all grow accustomed to the new scale. For example, look at the average EPDs of purebreds shown in this table to the right. The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base. Definition of Terms Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. Back Fat (BF): Inches of Backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Explanation of How to Utilize API and TI Indexes First, determine which index to use; if you're keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPD's, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd.
