2013 Stavick Simmentals Bull Sale

Cattlemen, On behalf of my family I would like to welcome you to our 13th annual bull sale! 2013 will no doubt go down as an opportunity and a challenge for Stavick Simmental and the entire beef industry. Expanding our herd last year has come with some challenges but also a lot of rewards. It is nice to compare our ranch raised genetics against industry leading genetics of Remington Cattle Company and Triangle J Simmental. We have found genetic combinations to better our own cows while proving STAV prefixed cows can perform with the best of them! As you go through the catalog you will notice the influence of these two industry leading operations in this year’s sale.

This past year we were recognized again for having a perfect score of 600 on the American Simmental’s Performance Advocate program. We strive on turning in information on EVERY cow in the herd. This increases predictability in our herd’s EPDs and gives you confidence –the good calves aren’t the only ones getting measured.

Some new sires have been added in this years offering. Major League, Red Iron, Easy Money, LockHart, General Lee, BC Lookout, Sharper Image and Wide Angle were added for genetic diversity. Yes, we still have your favorites such as Club King, Real Value, Ironman, Hitchpin and Apollo.

We have changed our bull development slightly from years past. With $7.50 corn feeding a bull or any cattle can be cash draining. This year we elected to leave calves on the cow until Oct 15. As pasture rates go up and daily feed costs skyrocket we are trying to utilize forage and grazing to its fullest. We feel the positives that have come out of this are maximizing our cow’s lactations up to 270 days, in other words running our factory for about 65 days longer. The bulls are much more fluid in movement and are putting on muscle rather than fat. We have also noticed less fat being deposited in the scrotum.

The bulls are developed on a highly forage based ration. This shows us the more efficient animal without pushing the upper limits of concentrates or corn. We are limit feeding corn in a beet pulp and prairie hay ration along with some protein and Vita Ferm minerals. We want a bull that is going to develop at a realistic pace giving enough time for skeletal, foot, testicular and muscle growth to take place so they don’t break down and melt away after we drop them off at your ranches. With the increased investments you are making today in a herd bull, you need to have them last as many years as possible. It is our core belief you should never have to worry about a bull’s feet going bad because of overfeeding.

At spring turnout and weaning we again have a full vaccination program including Bovishield 5, Ultrabac 7 + Somnus and Enforce 3 along with Eprinex wormer. As a result of younger bulls in our offering, we have elected not to semen test prior to the sale. It would be too hard on these bulls that are 9-11 months of age to get an adequate sample we would feel comfortable with. Remember it is only February and a lot of growth takes place from now until turnout. We will be taking bulls home and continue developing until April 10th at no charge. At that time we will semen test at our ranch and deliver to yours at no charge. If you elect to take your bull on sale day simply have him semen tested at your convenience before turnout and email or mail us a copy of your invoice from a licensed veterinarian for a breeding exam and we will get you reimbursed. As usual we stand behind our cattle 100%!

Identical twins sired by Easy Money out of a Ranchhand 1st calf heifer. Dam was purchased in the ND Simmental sale as an open heifer from Rocky Hills Ranch and she has done a great job. At birth 5Z was removed and put on a cow that aborted twins, as a result of being on more milk he weaned 100 lbs heavier. After being put on feed they are coming back together in size. If you like putting full brothers together you would be hard pressed to find a more complete set than these two. Very calm and easy to look at.

One of the first Easy Money calves out of a Nophalt 1st calf heifer. He came out small and took off like a bandit. Many generations of polled quality Simmental genetics are in his pedigree. His great grandmother 030K is still producing top calves in our herd at 13 years of age and bred AI again this year! He is hetrozygous black.

Mating is identical to 9Z and this matchup with Major League and Hitchpin is a slam dunk. Major League throws a bit more birth weight on his calves running in the mid 90’s. Calves are very aggressive at birth and all were born unassisted this past spring. We knew he had some birth weight so this is why we bred him to our most reliable calving ease cows-Hitchpin. He has a 110 YW EPD that puts him in the top 10% of the breed.

Calving ease supreme! Need a heifer bull? Take him home! Out of a tremendous Hitchpin 1st calf heifer. Yes, another story. His dam 035X broke her leg in July of last year. We brought her in from pasture and kept her in a small pen for a very long time. We were sure she dumped the calf, but as fall approached she was walking and clearly pregnant. So we kept her. She calved unassisted, leg is healed up and she stuck AI this year. I cannot emphasize the do-ability in these Hitchpin females.

From reproduction to calving ease and milk production they are spot on. This calf carries on the hardiness of his mother and his sire Apollo.

We just spoke of 22Z’s pedigree including the great granddam of 118L going back to GW Pasque, 25Z’s great granddam is the same cow! He has a snip on his nose but fits the part, being out of this family and Club King. He is in the top 3% for WW and top 2% for YW. This calf had a rough year, his dam 404P got hardware in May and we ended up weaning him then and keeping him around the farm this summer as we didn’t need a foster calf. 404P has a 361 day calving interval on 7 calves and has left her mark with 2 daughters in our herd. Even though 25Z was orphaned he has done extremely well. Had he been raised on his dam under normal conditions he would have weaned at least 100 lbs heavier.
