Editor’s Message For most in the Dakota’s, it has been a challenging year. There was too much water, not enough water, colder than normal temperatures, a winter that didn’t want to end and then in early October a very early, devastating winter storm.

Coming in to the Holiday Seasons, it seems like it would be hard to be thankful for anything when there’s been so many hardships, but we still have much to appreciate.

We live in the Midwest plains where neighbors help each other. We are also part of an industry that sticks together and calls each other friends. There have been some relief funds set up for the ranchers affected by the October 4 storm and you will see several more fundraisers at future sales where you can donate.

Cattle markets are up and despite all the efforts of the activists, people still want to eat beef ! Simmental is still gaining momentum, as feed yards desire SimGenetics.

We are also fortunate to welcome several new members in the Simmental business this year! Several are consigning to the South Dakota and North Dakota State sales, so please take time to personally welcome them.

The livestock community also lost a great leader this past year. Terry Robinson was a great friend to North Dakota and the surrounding states. There will be a great void at the ND Simmental Classic and many sales around the area. He will be greatly missed.

This holiday season give thanks for your health, family, and friends. Plan to attend the state meetings and sales in South Dakota and North Dakota and join in the fellowship of other cattle producers!

ND Simmental Association to award Scholarship Remembering our good friend, Terry Robinson The North Dakota Simmental Association Board of Directors recently approved to award a $500 scholarship to a 2014 high school graduate attending college next fall. Preference will be given to applicants coming from a livestock based background that include the use of Simmental genetics. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in an agricultural program. The scholarship application can be downloaded off the NDSA website. Deadline is March 15, 2014.

NDSA Director Positions Open The North Dakota Simmental Association has two positions open and one eligible for re-election in December. Mike Johnson (Northeast Region) and Erika Kenner (At Large) are not eligible for re-election and Chris Nicholson (Southeast Region) is eligible for another term.

The NDSA did re-district last year, so now there is only an East and a West Region, which means the Northeast and Southeast are now the East. The Director At Large can be from either region.

If you or anyone you know are interested in running for a ND Simmental Board position, please let a current board member know or attend the meeting on December 27 to voice your nomination!

SD Heifer Grant Program

Sponsored by the South Dakota Simmental Association Purposes of the grant program 1. To provide quality Simmental heifers to youth interested in starting a herd.

2. To encourage youth to show & promote Simmental cattle.

Youth eligible for these grants should meet the following criteria 1. Be a current member of the SD Junior Simmental Association and a resident of South Dakota.

(Annual membership fee of $10 may be sent with Grant Application) 2. Age: Must be at least 8 years old on January 1, 2013 and not older than 21 years on January 1, 2013.

3. Must agree to attempt to show the heifer in the upcoming Futurity Heifer show at the SD Summer Spotlight; your local SD county fair; and the 2014 SD State Fair Junior Heifer Show with the cosignature of parent or guardian to aid in the exhibit of heifer in these shows.

4. Must be able to provide an amount at least equal to or greater than the amount of the grant to purchase a heifer.

5. Must purchase a heifer from the 2013 SD Simmental Source Sale, 2014 Sioux Empire Farm Show Simmental Sale, 2014 Watertown Winter Farm Show Simmental Sale, 2014 Black Hills Stock Show Simmental Sale.

6. Recipient agrees to abide by rules of the Futurity Show and the 4-H Code of Ethics.

7. Recipient of grant must have the bidder number registered in their name at the sale. We will not transfer grants.

8. Non-compliance with the Grant Rules (by recipients) may affect future chances to receive a grant.

ALL GRANTS WILL BE $500. Grants are not transferable and do NOT carry over to the next year.

Note: Grants are not limited to a one-time issuance. If you have won a grant before, you may apply again.

2. No names will appear on the application portion submitted to the selection committee.

Criteria for judging of grants: • Need for financial help through this grant • Dedication to the Simmental Breed • Ability to care for animal(s) • Sense of responsibility • Integrity • Good candidate for continuing with Simmentals • How much effort was put into the application (applicant must fill out their own form) • Has applicant received a grant in the last several years? If so, did the recipient adhere to the rules such as showing the heifer at: 1. County Fair 2. SDJSA Futurity Heifer Show at the Summer Spotlight 3. SDSF Junior Heifer Show 4. Grant recipients will be announced prior by December 10, 2013.
