EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD’S) The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. Reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g. lb., cm, etc.). All published EPD’s in this catalog were generated through the American Simmental Association and are subject to change. Production EPD’s: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): WW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. Docility EPD (DOC): Docility EPD’s predict the percentage of an animal’s offspring that are expected to score favorably (1 or 2) on a five-point scoring system when compared to the offspring of another animal. Expressed in EPD’s as a percentage with higher values being favorable. Maternal EPD’s: Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births. Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal’s daughters. They account for average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. Stayability EPD (STAY): Stayability is defined as the probability that a sire’s daughters entering the herd will stay in production through 6 years of age. The Stayability EPD provides an estimate of how long a sire’s daughters will stay in the herd compared to another sire in the same evaluation. Higher values indicate greater stayability. Carcass EPD’s: Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPD’s estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint. Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade better (lower) than a zero bull. SIMMENTAL – API $ and TI $ EPD INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. selling present an opportunity to purchase breed leading caliber genetics. These are homeraised genetics, with 86 years of breeding behind them. Our breeding program has been implemented with three basic principles: 1.) Use of quality, proven sires through Artificial Insemination for over 45 years. 2.) Disciplined culling – Maintaining a cowherd is like tending a garden, one has to continually pull the weeds. 3.) Leverage of the best producing cows in our herd through Embryo Transfer to produce 40-50% of the next calf crop. Applying these principles has allowed our program to generate more quality replacement females than we have the ability to maintain in the herd, and we are proud to offer this group. The AI sired calves at side represent cutting edge genetics. As a group they rank near the top of the breed for the All Purpose Index.

Most of the cows selling will have calved prior to sale time. These cows sell open and ready for fall breeding. A few of the cows will calve after sale time. These cows were ultrasound to determine calf gender last spring. This “Calf Sex” is listed below and deemed reliable but is not guaranteed. If you purchase a first calf heifer(s) remember they are still growing and manage them accordingly to insure they breed right back. 10 COMMERICAL OPEN HEIFERS

This year we are offering a select group of replacement quality commercial heifers. Born in February and March 2013 they are highpercentage Simmental breeding, backed by multiple generations of the best bulls produced by Irvine Ranch. These gentle heifers were weaned in early September, several of which have already been observed in heat. They have received their vaccinations, have a freeze brand corresponding to their tag #, and are ready spring breeding.

10 WAYS TO ADD VALUE TO YOUR CALVES & BOTTOM LINE: A few thoughts from Irvine Ranch. 1.) Use the right combination of breeds: The right breed compliment in our opinion is cattle near 50% Simmental and 50% Angus, both in terms of cowherd and calf crop. Our goals are to choose the right genetics within those breeds and to offer bulls with a range of combinations of Simmental and Angus, to keep you close to center. MARC research suggests that crossbred cows on average produce 600 lbs of additional weaning weight over a lifetime vs. straightbred cows (higher calving rates and longevity). SimAngus feeder cattle have the ability to grade and yield. 2.) Consider a Terminal/Maternal Approach: Reduce cow carrying costs yet produce the muscle, marbling, and growth needed in the next phases of beef production. Research shows that for each 100 lbs of additional cow weight the cow will wean an additional 6.0 lbs. The annual cost to maintain this extra 100 lbs of cow weight is $42.00. Big cows do not pay. Moderate sized cows (1300 lbs +/- in our opinion) are key. 3.) Herd Health: Work with your veterinarian to develop a herd health program. There are several effective calf vaccination protocols available (e.g. VAC 45). One KSU study found that compared to non-vaccinated calves, Vac-45 premiums averaged from about $2.50 to $8.00 per hundredweight. Vac-34 premiums averaged about $1.00 to $4.75 per hundredweight, while vaccinated but not certified calves sold at premiums averaging about $1.00 to $2.25 per hundredweight. It simple, healthy calves do better in the feedlot. 4.) Wean and background your calves 30 - 45 days before selling: Our research estimates that weaned calves sell $5 to $7 per hundredweight better. Bunk breaking and feeding the right minerals can only help them down the road. 5.) Sell calves by uniform load-lot groups: Tighten your calving window. Smaller operations can cooperate with neighbors or other Irvine Ranch customers to utilize similar breed, genetics, and post weaning programs. Irvine Ranch can help link you up with other producers. If there is a calf that is unhealthy or does not fit the group, pull it out to sell later. If your calves perform well for the Buyer they will be back for more next year. 6.) Have a long term plan to improve your cowherd: If you retain heifers how do you decide which ones to keep, and which cows to keep? Your cowherd is an asset. Like most assets there are ways to make it work harder for you. 7.) Utilize Allied Access Tagging through ASA: EID and Age/Source are available through this program. 8.) Document the above: Irvine Ranch transfers all bulls through the Association to you. Maintain an active inventory of their registrations. 9.) Marketing: Feeder Calf Indexes are the future of marketing calves. In the future, feeder cattle purchasers will consider economic indexes that gauge genetic merit for post weaning performance also with an accounting of environmental differences (e.g. vaccinations to-date), and value the calves accordingly. $TI is the best tool we have today to be ready. 10.) Buy Irvine Ranch bulls: The best feeder calves are worth $100 more per head than calves of average value. With the right genetics, your good management, and targeted marketing you can capture this value!
