Indianola Chamber of Commerce A Letter from the Chamber President If you’re lucky enough to have been born and raised in Indianola, you’ve enjoyed one of the most unique and wonderful communities in Iowa your entire life. I moved to Indianola 17 years ago and I still feel like I am just getting started! Growing up in a small town in eastern Iowa, I had to go 15 miles for just about any type of entertainment, employment or the necessities of life. Here in Indianola, we have it ALL at our fingertips! You can start your day with a hot cup of java from your favorite coffee shop . . . head to one of Indianola’s grocery stores to pick up some fresh meat or produce . . . stop in for a haircut at one of the many local barbers or stylists . . . grab a delicious lunch at a local eatery . . . get some serious retail shopping done downtown on The Square . . . pick up the kids and get an after-school ice cream treat . . . and even enjoy a concert in the park with the entire family to end the night! We have so many wonderful and valuable treasures to celebrate here in Indianola. Simpson College is one of the finest secondary education facilities in Iowa, located right next to beautiful Buxton Park. The Des Moines Metro Opera provides a classic cultural experience for all to enjoy each year. And don’t forget the colorful hot air balloons that dot the sky every summer during the National Hot Air Balloon Classic.

New medical and retirement facilities have sprung up in the north development, and construction of the YMCA is approaching on the horizon. Businesses all around The Square have renovated and spruced up their storefronts, while the Indianola Middle School field house project is nearing completion. Plans and directs the activities of the fire department and ambulance service, including establishing a fire prevention program, inspecting buildings and premises, overseeing emergency response and protecting life and property from fires.
The goal of the Indianola Street Department is to make the city’s transportation system safe and free of any type of debris. It maintains pavement for all public right-of-ways, city-owned parking lots, sidewalks, and nearly 90 miles of streets.

The human resources department recruits employees, administers employee benefits and oversees supervision of risk management functions such as workers’ compensation and liability.
The department maintains all aspects of the treatment plant operations. In addition, they inspect and maintain the system’s infrastructure throughout the city.

IMU Electric System The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) electric department was established in May 1890 to provide electric service to the residents of Indianola. The electric utility is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees. IMU serves the electric requirements of the citizens of Indianola located within its established territorial boundaries.
The Indianola Public Library promotes life-long learning and enjoyment with free and equal access to information, educational and recreational resources for the entire community. The library director oversees all library activities subject to the general library board of trustees and municipal restrictions. The Community Development Department safeguards the health, property and public welfare through the regulated and orderly development of land and land uses within the city of Indianola. It protects life and property from all hazards subject to structure design, construction, occupancy, repair, removal or demolition. The Community Development Department also enforces the city zoning ordinances.

IMU purchases energy on a wholesale basis but is equipped to provide 47.5MW of electricity with local generating units. Two substations and a loop-feed transmission system provide customers with a redundant supply of power. IMU currently serves 6,300 electric meters with average annual sales of 116,430,000 kWh’s. The current annual peak demand for Indianola is 31.2MW. IMU also offers a variety of energy efficiency incentives for qualifying customers. IMU Water System The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) water department was established in 1905 and is governed by the same five-member Board of Trustees as the electric department. Indianola’s water is supplied by four deep-water wells that extend approximately 2,600 feet down into the Jordan Aquifer. The IMU water department is responsible for maintaining 90 miles of water mains, 675 fire hydrants and 1,500 valves in the Indianola distribution system. Indianola’s raw and finished water data is available on our web site at www.i-m-u.com. IMU Network Services Indianola Municipal Utilities offers access to telephone, Internet, and other network services via a fiber optic network connected directly to the customers’ premise. IMU’s open access fiber system allows private service providers to deliver secure, reliable service with virtually unlimited bandwidth. IMU is also able to tailor network uses of dedicated dark fiber and redundancy solutions to customers’ specifications. Service is available now to business customers.

Community trails A series of intersecting trails appropriate for walking and biking connect the community and beyond. They include the McVay Trail, 1.6 miles from trail head on E. Fifth St. to Pickard Park. It also connects to Carlisle through Summerset Park, a distance of 11 miles. The 1.0 mile Jerry Kelley Trail connects Memorial Park to the Summerset Trail. Attractions Des Moines Metro Opera Des Moines Metro Opera is a summer festival of opera that has grown far beyond that title. The company performs three operas each summer in repertory, with occasional mid-year performances as well. Casts include top-notch professionals from around the opera world performing in the intimate Blank Performing Arts Center on the Simpson College campus. National Balloon Classic For more than 40 years Indianola and Warren County have hosted a hot air balloon festival. If you haven’t been to the Classic, now is a good time to start, and if you have been joining us for years, we hope you will continue.
Warren County Fair The annual fair celebrates the agricultural history of Warren County. Featuring an old-fashioned midway, animal show and grandstand events, the fair is a fun-filled week for all. Warren County Historical Society The Warren County Historical Society was created to collect, preserve and inspire interest in the history of Warren County. Among the displays are a one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1917, a replica of a pioneer church, a Quaker meeting house and others. The genealogical library is open by appointment. The main museum is open Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon. Wesley Woods Wesley Woods is a 344-acre site serving children, youth, and adults since 1956. Guests come for summer camp, birthday parties, family reunions, spiritual retreats, church retreats, time away, and to enjoy God’s beauty and serenity. The facilities are available 365 days a year. The camp is a ministry of the Iowa Methodist Conference, but is open to all denominations.

Indianola Bike Night Indianola Bike Night began the summer of 2005 and draws motorcycle enthusiasts and visitors from around the state. Located on the town square, this family-friendly event has historically drawn up to 6,000 bikes and a crowd of more than 10,000. In addition to the many standard and custom motorcycles on display, there is live music, food and beverages, vendors and exhibits and much more.
National Balloon Museum The National Balloon Museum dedicates itself to providing the public with a comprehensive understanding of ballooning and its history through its exhibitions and collections. The museum archives more than 200 years of ballooning, hosts 24,000 visitors a year (with 20 countries in attendance) and operates on more than 2,000 volunteer hours annually. Admission to the museum is free. Donations are accepted. The National Balloon Museum is a volunteer organization and is operated solely on donations and free-will offerings.

Kids Activities There are a number of organizations geared toward the community’s youth. Here are listings for many of them. Many local churches have youth groups or other activities for young people as well. For more information on those organizations, contact the church or religious group of your choice. 4-H Warren County Extension Office, 961-6237 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. There are 24 clubs in Warren County serving students in fourth through 12th grades. Clover Kids serves children in kindergarten through third grade. Clubs meet at different times throughout the month and focus on a variety of areas.
