INTEGRITY… RECOGNITION… CREDIBILITY

I

believe these are three essential ingredients of a successful beef breed and breed association. The best description of “Integrity” that I have ever heard is: "It’s what we do when nobody is looking." To be recognized as a legitimate beef breed and breed association we must first begin with INTEGRITY. Many of you have seen the picture associated with the caption ”INTEGRITY" of the cowboy riding horseback in a driving rain with a newborn calf draped across the saddle, taking it to the barn to doctor or to reunite the calf with it’s mother.

He’s not doing it so that someone will see him, he’s doing it because it’s the right thing to do. The level of honesty and integrity a person processes defines ones’ character and are values we would all like to instill in ourselves and in our junior members, the next generation of Chianina breeders. If our breeders have integrity when turning in birth dates, weights, pedigrees and other subjective information regarding records then we have a solid foundation to build on and further develop the potential of this great breed of cattle. Furthermore, we also expect the highly qualified and respected judges that we ask to evaluate our cattle at fairs and expositions across the country to make their selections based on expertise and integrity to enhance the genetic progress made by our breeders and reward those who excel in genetic selection, management practices and promotion programs.

each day at home, at the office, in the pasture, at local sale barns, at the county cattlemen’s meetings, state cattlemen’s association functions and national level involvement in shows, feedlots and sales. The ACA and exhibitors do a great job of creating recognition. If we hope to take this recognition and industry acceptance to the next level we need to register and turn in weights and measures on more or all of the Chianina calves born on your place each year. If we all make the commitment to do this we will grow, prosper and have a sustainable and highly recognized breed and association.

Thirdly, “CREDIBILITY” is created when INTEGRITY and RECOGNITION are in place. Credibility is the weight placed on the sum of one’s quality, consistency, Integrity, Recognition and accomplishments. However, we need to be mindful that Credibility can be lost or reduced when any of these components are compromised.

In summary, it is the sincere goal of the ACA and staff to strive to improve and increase the Credibility, acceptance and market share of Chianina cattle throughout the beef industry. This goal can be successfully accomplished if each of us sets a personal goal to pursue our registered seedstock business with the highest degree of Integrity (even when nobody is looking).

I hope to see as many of you as possible in Louisville, Ky., for our National Show, Sale and Membership Meeting.

T

he first thing breeders often ask me when it comes to advertising is “Where do we start?” The answer is “that’s not an easy question.” Advertising without a plan is the equivalent to throwing your hard earned dollars away. First you have to consider who you’re trying to target. It is important to make sure you advertise in a way that will reach your target market. For example, if you are a Chianina, ChiAngus or Club Calf breeder, you would be best served to advertise in that specific breed’s publication as well as a multi-breed publication. This will put your program in front of its most likely clients.

A plan contains many parts, just as your advertising plan should. Running a single ad right before your sale can be helpful but it is a lot like a gun with only one bullet.

You only have one chance to hit the target. If you develop an advertising plan that systematically puts ads in different months of a magazine leading up to your sale you have a substantially better chance of being noticed and generating excitement for your stock. In the third part of this series we will discuss how using social media can benefit your program. Social media may be the easiest and most diverse part of the plan, so stay tuned for helpful tips!

On another note the state fair season is about over and

the Chianina breed had some awesome highlights so far.

Some of the prestigious placing’s include Grand Champion Overall Steer at the South Dakota State Fair. This calf was raised by Holt Bros. and looked exceptional on show day. The steer that won Chi Junior Nationals went on to claim Grand Champion Market Animal Honors at the Nebraska State Fair! This calf was raised by Mark and Pam Johnson. On the heifer side, the 3rd Overall Heifer at the Iowa State Fair Jr. Show was from the Chianina Div. and shown by the Core Family of Iowa. This is just a short list of the ones I can remember from memory but it was really refreshing to see Chi cattle doing well at some of the most prestigious state fairs in the country!

The sale season is under way and I sure am excited to get out and see all of the stock that lies ahead. As always if you need assistance marketing your stock please give me a call.

ACA Ladies Auxiliary

Greetings from Indiana!

A

s I am sitting here writing this article, I can’t believe that it's already October! Where has the year gone? Just a few months ago, juniors were traveling to Kansas City for the Junior Nationals. I remember people always telling me when I was younger that time will fly by once you are out of school and boy were they right! I can’t believe how time does fly by when you are out in the “real world” working Monday-Friday and juggling a family all at the same time. It shouldn’t be time for the NAILE because it seems like we were there a couple months ago. This is a reminder to all juniors to take the time to enjoy every second you have with friends and family. Soon you will be saying “time does fly by”!

I hope every lady is planning on attending our Ladies Luncheon. The “Come As You Are Luncheon” will be on Tuesday, November 15. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. We need to get as many ladies as we can involved. If you do plan to attend, please remember to bring a small gift for our gift exchange.

Don’t forget to stop by the booth and look at all the items in the Silent Auction. The ACLA will also be selling cookbooks during the week. This is a fund raiser for the Ladies Auxiliary along with the proceeds from the Silent Auction to be able to fund the Queen throughout the year.

Recipe Corner Filet with Horseradish Cream Ingredients: 4 beef tenderloin steaks, cut 1 inch thick (about 4 ounces each) 1 Tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper Salt Horseradish Cream: 1/4 cup dairy sour cream 1 Tablespoon prepared horseradish 1 Tablespoon finely chopped green onion Instructions: 1. Combine garlic, thyme & pepper: press evenly onto beef steaks.

2. Place steaks on grid over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, uncovered 13 to 15 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, covered, 11 to 15 minutes) for medium rare to medium doneness, turning occasionally.

3. Meanwhile, combine Horseradish Cream ingredients in small bowl; refrigerate until ready to use.

Hello Chi Breeders & Enthusiasts

W

hen I was a little girl I was a big dreamer. I wanted to be marine biologist that way I could work with dolphins all the time. And then I wanted to be a lawyer because I could argue with a fence post (at least that’s what my mom said). As I got older my dreams became more focused on what my passion is which is cattle and the agriculture industry.

Ever since I attended my first Junior National in Murfreesboro, Tenn., back in 1999, I developed a passion for Chianinia cattle and the people who make up this organization. I will never forget those board directors that always helped me when I was a little girl, such as Blair Bryant, Sara Barker and Dusty Brown, just to name a few. I always admired how much they loved the kids and would do anything to help when someone needed it. As I would watch the board members year after year I made it a goal of mine to become one.

In 2006 in West Monroe, La., I achieved this goal and have been on the board ever since. Working with the junior members and being a role model for them is such an honor. Since I have been on the board I have served as the public relations officer, secretary and vice president, but I never achieved my main goal of being president until this year. Becoming president of the AJCA has been a dream of mine ever since I became a member of this association. So, junior members, never give up on your dreams and work hard at achieving them because you never know when they will come true. I wish good luck to all exhibitors showing at all the fall shows and I can’t wait to see ya'll in Louisville.

Words From Your Board Member: “The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.”

What an amazing year 2011 has been Ken Culp III for the ACA! The 2010 fiscal year closed on April 30 with increases in adult memberships, junior membership and a bottom line “in the black.” Although registrations as a whole were down slightly (277) from the previous year, Chiangus registrations were up 12.71%. Full blood registrations doubled! Active adult memberships increased by 11.31% with junior memberships increasing by a whopping 14.58%!

In this economy, with a shrinking number of beef cattle, and increasing competition among purebred breeds and associations, these numbers are extremely optimistic and encouraging. Thanks to everyone for help making it happen.

We’re also back to full staff with the addition of Holly Hiebert in the position of Administrative / Membership Services Coordinator and Tyler Humphrey as Director of Marketing & Performance. Both Holly and Tyler were very helpful in assisting with a variety of activities at the Junior National. I’ve personally found Holly to be extremely helpful in answering questions and assisting with registration and transfer issues.

Tyler has really hit the ground running and has kept busy this summer attending field days, state shows, state fairs, making a lot of herd visits and working on the national sale. The fall sale season is underway and Tyler and Stan are both busy making sure that each event is covered and represented by the ACA. Jennifer gets a lot of credit for “manning the ship” this summer and making sure that the ACA office was

open, fully staffed and responsive to the needs of our membership while we had two staff vacancies in May and June. The turn-around time for registrations and transfers is amazing; usually being completed in less than 24 hours during non-peak times.

Heather has a lot on her plate, but manages to balance multiple responsibilities efficiently, effectively and still makes it look a lot easier than it must be. The ACJ Herd Book was filled with creative, interesting and informative ads and articles of interest and benefit to our membership. Heather works hard to keep all of us informed through e-blasts and Chi-Notes and communicates changes in rules and schedules at ACA-sponsored events.

As always, Heather did a fantastic job in coordinating another highly successful junior national. She does a great job developing the junior board members and engages them in leadership roles and decisionmaking. Heather has developed a terrific rapport with show officials in Ft. Worth and Louisville. We often hear from them how well-prepared and well-run the Chi shows are as compared to other breeds.

Stan is a great ambassador for the ACA and represents us well in the beef cattle, livestock and agriculture industries. He is passionate about Chianina cattle and their composites and has done a great job of leading an efficient, effective, service-oriented staff. Both Stan and Tyler have made visiting newer breeders a priority and I often hear positive, appreciative remarks from folks who have been visited for the first time, or for the first time in a long time.

I don’t think that any one person can take credit for the success that the ACA is currently experiencing in membership growth, increases in registrations and transfers, and profitable operation. Rather, I believe that everyone deserves some of the credit.

This is a great team. And our team is dependent upon all of the players to do his or her job, in order to win the

game. “The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.”

2011 has also been an extraordinary year to be in the cattle business.

Record input costs, feeder and fat cattle prices, declining cattle numbers and extremes in weather, temperature and rainfall have made for challenging, interesting and trying times.

Still, it’s an exciting time to be raising Chianina cattle. Improving efficiency in all segments of production and finding new markets for Chianina beef are important goals of Chi breeders, producers and feeders.

The days have grown shorter and cooler, crops are ripening, silage is being chopped, calves are being weaned and the fall production and calf sales are full swing. Summer is melding into autumn and thoughts turn to an important time of the year for Chi breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts: our national show at the North American International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville.

The ACA Board and staff have all worked hard to find new ways to involve everyone in the NAILE, whether you show cattle or not. Previous to 2010, cattle entered in the National Sale had to also be entered and exhibited at the North American.

Beginning with the 2010 National Sale, cattle or genetic packages could be offered without actually being on display at the NAILE. This provides an opportunity to breeders who don’t pursue the show arena to also participate in consigning their genetics to our national sale.

The Junior National Benefit Auction will also be held this year at the NAILE. Because the combined banquets ran longer than anticipated in Kansas City this summer, we were not able to complete the Junior National Benefit Auction. The format for this year’s benefit auction will be unique. A few “high dollar” items will be sold during the national sale on Monday evening.

Other items will be offered through a silent auction format at the ACA booth during the week. We’ll gladly accept

ACA Sponsored Sale Policy

The ACA requires sale animals consigned to ACA sponsored sales to be tested for genetic abnormalities of which they are identified as suspect.

• A suspect animal has an ancestor that has tested positive as a carrier for one or more known genetic abnormalities and no DNA test has been performed within the direct lineage to that ancestor that is a known carrier to clear the animal in question of this status.

Available test results and status of sale animals shall be presented at the time of sale. Any buyer of untested lots does so with the awareness that testing hasn't been conducted with the inherent risk of the lot being a carrier of a genetic abnormality at the time of purchase. The ACA is not liable for such purchases in the case that the lot is later found to be such a carrier.

Of course, we hope that you’ll participate in the ACA Annual Meeting, to be held on Tuesday, November 15 in the West Hall, in Regional Meetings held earlier that morning, and want to encourage all of the ACA ladies to attend the “come as you are ACA ladies luncheon.”

Finally, let me remind you of the “6.25% rule” that will go into effect on January 1, 2012. “Breeding cattle born on or after January 1, 2012 must have a minimum of 6.25% Chianina blood in order to participate in ACA nationally sponsored shows or sales.” These ACA nationally sponsored shows or sales include Denver, Ft. Worth, the Junior National and Louisville. This rule does not apply to steers. Cattle with less than 6.25% Chianina blood may still be registered and are still eligible to show and sell everywhere other than at these four events.

When this rule was passed, it was NOT the intention of the ACA Board of Directors to dictate what percentage of Chi blood breeders were infusing into their herds or to indicate what an optimum percentage should be.

Rather, we were highly concerned about the rapid dilution of Chianina blood in our cattle. We hoped that the adoption of “the 6.25% rule” would add value to those cattle whose pedigrees documented a significant percentage of Chianina blood.

I’m sure that I speak for the entire board when I say that we are always interested in hearing from members, understanding your perspectives and gathering your input so that we are better able to represent you at ACA Board meetings. Remember, the ACA is only as strong as its membership.

L

ike any job, being an ultrasound technician has its ups and downs. Testy cattle. Severe weather. Reliance on machines that sometimes just don’t feel the need to cooperate. It’s not always an easy job.

Yet, those who arrive at the ranch, scanner in hand, ready to help the beef producer produce a better product will tell you the job is fulfilling, rewarding, and invariably interesting.

So just what makes a good scanning session?

“Injury free works for me,” says Jason McLennan, of Belle Fourche, South Dakota. McLennan is one of the first class of ultrasound technicians trained to use the technology. He adds that animal temperament is key to maintaining a safe environment.

Dan Hines of Martin, South Dakota, agrees good cattle temperament is crucial. “It doesn’t help to have cattle bouncing off the walls. That just makes it harder for everyone,” he says. Hines operates in a six-state area, and has been scanning for five years.

Even good cattle can get ancy on scanning day. That’s why Todd Tagtmeyer of Seibert, Colorado, puts a high premium on available help. He says, “It’s important to have good people on the other side of the chute.”

The facilities can also make a difference.

Tagtmeyer says producers seem to understand a roof overhead and other accommodations can make a difference in image quality. “They’ve been out there with us. They know,” he says.

In McLennan’s part of the country simple things like rubber pads to cushion the frozen ground where he stands and supplemental heat to keep equipment running properly are important amenities.

Tagtmeyer adds more producers are keeping ultrasound scanning in mind as they build new facilities. “They incorporate plans for adequate space and weather protection,” he says. “They wouldn’t be without those things now.”

For Susan McCalib of Hillsboro, Oregon, an ultrasound technician across the western states since 1999, having an adequate power source is an important feature producers often overlook. “A dedicated power

supply makes a huge difference,” says McCalib. She likes to have two circuits if possible – one for the ultrasound machine and computer, and one for the clippers, oil heater, and blower.

McCalib adds having all the paperwork in order before the session begins is critical.

Those are all elements that set the stage for the purpose to the exercise – the appearance of the image on the screen.

“You can tell when they have high expectations for a particular animal, because it gets real quiet and they all gather around,” laughs Tagtmeyer. “They’re all looking for that animal that will give them something to brag about.”

Every producer is different, and the variety appeals to Hines. “I deal with all aspects of the business – commercial, feedlots, purebred breeders from the biggest to the little guy,” says Hines, “and it’s always interesting to see the different approaches and different methods used. Some are simply providing a service for their bull buyers, other use ultrasound data for breeding decisions. It makes the work more enjoyable when you can see improvement in the product.”

The technician rarely knows the resulting data from his scans, but working with the same operations year after year, they get to know their customers’ stock.

“I can compare what I see on the screen to 15 years ago,” says McLennan, “and I can see how the program has evolved and how they’ve made strides.”

Hines agrees what he sees on the screen year after year is reflective of breeding decisions. “You can tell the producers who use ultrasound as part of the puzzle.

Over three to five years there will be tremendous improvement,” says Hines. He says he can identify those who are “number conscious,” directing their efforts toward a particular trait. “Maybe they’ve focused on rib eye size, and then decide they want to increase marbling to get more flavor into the meat. You can see that change on the screen.”

“I have the utmost respect for those making the breeding decisions,” he adds. “It’s a challenge to antici-

He says it is those who focus on heifer development who often see the most herd improvement. “If you increase the quality of a bull, you may add $10,000 to your sale, and that’s certainly important and tempting,” says Hines, “but those who scan their heifers and incorporate the data into their breeding program are the ones who see the fastest progress in herd improvement.”

Making those decisions depends not only on good scan images, but on the data they produce, and that is up to the ultrasound lab.

McCalib takes pride in her customer service and that includes utilizing the National CUP Lab™ for objective thirdparty interpretation. “There’s something to be said of the images being

interpreted by an objective party, and by the same people year after year,” says McCalib. “My customers are truly getting the benefit of consistency, experience, and quality service.”

The CUP Lab™ has maintained its commitment to providing that quality service while riding the cutting edge of ever-changing technology, an aspect of its role McLennan fully appreciates.

“They’ve really stepped up and put their resources into improving equipment and processing,” he says. “That’s a plus for technicians and producers.”

For some, job satisfaction comes from a job well done.

“It’s challenging work, and it’s satisfying to know I’m technically proficient at it,” says Hines.

For some, it’s love of the cattle, and working outdoors.

“If I could spend every day chuteside, out with the cattle, I’d be a happy camper,” says Rod Wendorff,

of Raymond, Alberta, Canada. Wendorff abandoned his first career as an accountant to take up ultrasound scanning. “I just couldn’t sit inside anymore.”

For others, it’s the day-to-day practicality that drives most of the professional world.

“I have a wife, two kids and a mortgage,” quips McLennan. “That gives me plenty of motivation.”

All enjoy offering superior service to their customers, working with a variety of people and operations, and seeing herd improvement first-hand.

Whatever the conditions or motivation, the results are the same – ultrasound technicians are well-trained professionals who play a vital part in the beef production chain. “It’s exciting to know we’re contributing to the industry,” says McLennan.

Jordan Holt has been a part of the cattle industry, especially registered seed stock and show cattle since he was born in Aberdeen, S.D. Jordan attended Aberdeen Public Schools and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1995. He attended SDSU in Brookings and Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown where he studied Ag Business/Ag Production and Animal Science.

Jordan was a 4-H member and a member of a number of junior breed associations including the Junior Chi Association and was able to exhibit cattle throughout South Dakota and at major shows at Denver, Louisville, Ft. Worth, Omaha, Billings and numerous Junior Nationals across the nation.

In March of this year Jordan accepted a position with Midwest Ag as the General Manager of the Aberdeen Division, an Ag company that sells pharmaceuticals, vaccines, Hubbard Feeds and all Ag/livestock related products. Along with his brother Justin and mother Karen, Holt Bros emphasizes the breeding, raising, selling and showing of Chi Influenced cattle. Holt Bros annually take part in the South Dakota State Fair, NAILE, National Western, Black Hills Stock Show and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic livestock shows.

They hold a club calf pasture sale in September, a bred female sale in December followed by a bull sale in April. One recent accomplishment that they are very proud of in the show ring is being the breeder of the last two Champion Chiangus Females at the Chi Junior Nationals.

Jordan has two daughters, Haleigh, age 4, and Maggie, age 2 1/2, and continues to live on the family farm

west of Aberdeen. He is active in the South Dakota Chi Association, serving as President and Co-Junior Advisor with his mother Karen. Duties of this position include conducting the Chi shows at the South Dakota Junior Spotlight and South Dakota State Fair and organizing fundraisers for those events. Jordan is a member of the Aberdeen Area Chamber Ag Committee and represents Midwest Ag at various functions.

"I grew up raising and showing Chi cattle and have always felt that this breed brings so many positive things to the top of the cattle industry; it's easy for me to speak of the great attributes that I feel this breed has for the registered, commercial or show cattle producer. If elected to the Board of Directors of the ACA, I would hope to not only be an ambassador for the Association, but also to broaden my horizons with knowledge gained from the experience."

"Running for the ACA board is something that I have contemplated for several years. I believe now the time is right for me to contribute.

With the experience I have gained over the last 30 years, I have had the honor of working with just about every facet of the cattle business. This includes working as a cow-calf seed stock producer, producer educator in the extension service and currently I work everyday with cattle backgrounders, feedlots and packers. We must remember that at all times the market is consumer driven. Together, as Chianina breeders, we have a great opportunity to use our genetics in the progression of our cattle industry presently and in the future."

Val Shields, of VBS Farms, has lived in Falmouth, Ky., for over 15 years.

He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1987 with a degree in Animal Science and has 30 years experience with Chianina genetics and farming operations. Val is past President and current Treasurer of the KY Chianina Association, a lifetime member of Grant County Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association, as well as a member of the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association, NCBA, Livestock Marketing Association and the NAILE Beef/ Dairy Advisory Committee. Northwest Region – Jordan Holt

Dr. Ken Culp, III is completing his first term on the ACA Board of Directors and is seeking re-election as an at-large director.

He was born and raised in northwestern Indiana on a 2,500 acre family farm that raised grain and cattle, with a feedlot capacity of 1,200 head.

Ken received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in Animal Sciences and was a member of the national championship livestock judging team. After working for four years for the Indiana Department of Agriculture and the USDA as a livestock grader and market reporter, he returned to Purdue and coached the Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team for three years, while working on his Master of Science Degree in Beef Cattle Production. Dr. Culp has

judged livestock and showmanship from coast to coast and border to border for 30 years. He is the only person in the world to have coached a state championship 4-H Livestock Judging Team and compete in the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest from three different states (Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.)

Ken began his career in Extension as a 4-H Agent in Indiana, serving six years in Whitley County, coordinating one of the largest 4-H livestock programs in the state. During this time, he pursued his doctorate degree in Educational Foundations and Administration with a minor in Curriculum & Instruction, from Purdue University.

After receiving his Ph.D., he accepted a position at The Ohio State University as the Extension Volunteerism Specialist in the Department of 4-H Youth Development and the Department of Agricultural Education. He is now the Principal Specialist in the Department of 4-H Youth Development at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He is responsible for volunteer development and the animal sciences core content area, including beef, dairy, sheep, swine, goats and horses in Kentucky 4-H. He teaches a series of graduate courses on volunteer administration.

Ken, his father, brother and the five Culp grandchildren operate Grand ‘Ole Place Farms, raising Chiangus, Chimaine, Chiford, Maintainer and Hereford cattle, with divisions in Indiana and Kentucky. Ken and his wife, Nancy (a director in the ACA Ladies Auxiliary), are the parents of three daughters; all of whom are extremely active in the American Jr. Chianina Association. The have won numerous honors and two of the girls have served as ACA National Queen as well as AJCA board members. The three Culp girls each placed in the Top 10 Over-All at the 2006 National Jr. Chianina Show; the first time that three siblings had done so.

Three years ago, when contemplating running for a position on the ACA Board of Directors, a number of

current and former board members gave the following advice: “This is an important job, but one that doesn’t take much time.” How wrong they were!

Following are some of the activities in which he has been involved during his first term on the ACA Board of Directors.

• Developed the collection of job descriptions for all staff positions at the ACA • Wrote the job announcement for the CEO position when it became vacant; Accepted applications from 38 individuals for the CEO position; Fielded phone calls and answered questions from 32 applicants for the CEO position; Scheduled two rounds of interviews with a total of 8 finalists for the CEO position • Served as secretary of the Board of Directors during 2010 and 2011 • Drafted the new committee structure that was adopted by the ACA • Conducted a five year analysis of the number of low percentage Chianina cattle registered in the ACA, as well as the percentage of Chianina blood in champion and reserve champion bulls and heifers exhibited in Denver, Ft. Worth, the Jr. National and the North American.

• Served as board liaison to the Jr. Board, 2008 – 2011 • Currently serves on the Promotion & Marketing Committee.

At-Large – Michael L Rose Mike Rose and his family own and operate Four Roses Cattle in Logansport,

Ind. He holds a B.S. in Animal Science and M.S. in Ag/Adult Education from Purdue University. Mike has worked with the Purdue Extension Service, Purina Mills Inc., and now is a Financial Advisor with City Securities. Mike has served on numerous Agricultural Boards at all levels including the State of Indiana Agricultural Literacy Commission as well as the Board of Directors of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association. Mike and his wife Teresa have three children; son Ryan is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and fly’s helicopters for the Navy and twin daughters, Amanda and Rebecca are seniors at Purdue.

At Four Roses, they like to “show them” and they’ve had considerable success to that end. They have exhibited Champion Females and Bulls at places like Denver, Louisville, Kansas City and even a couple of Junior Nationals. Most recently they exhibited the National Champion Chi-Angus Bull at the 2009 North American.

As much pride as they take in these accomplishments, they take a greater amount of pride when their bulls perform well at the test station and for their customers, when their females go to new homes and make money for their new owners, and when freezer beef customers tell them how much they enjoyed their eating experience.

Mike and his family have found that the Chianina breed affords them the best opportunity of achieving our goals.

“I am seeking a position as a representative to the board of directors because of my belief in this breed of cattle and what it has to offer to the beef industry as a whole. We have been involved with other breeds over the past 35 years and have found no other breed that affords us the flexibility to meet all segments of our client base. It is also my belief that the flexibility of our breed creates unique opportunities and challenges that our board must be ever mindful of. As breeders of Chi cattle it is up to us to come together and share our story

At-Large – Bryan Schaefer

Bryan Schaefer was born and raised in Des Lacs, North Dakota and currently resides there with his wife, Bridget and their five children, 8 year old triplets, Riley, Megan, & Holly and their 2 year old twins, Tyler and Kati.

Bryan is involved in a cattle partnership with his father, Jerry and brother, John, known as Schaefer Chiangus.

The operation includes 300 head of cows,150 of which are utilized for embryo transplant work. The family has been involved with the Chianina breed for the last 30 years. Bryan and his family have been showing cattle for just as long, competing in local, state and national levels. He looks forward to the days when his children start showing and passing the knowledge he learned from his family to his kids.

Every year Schaefer Chiangus has their annual production sale, now currently held in Bismarck, North Dakota.

The sale consists on bulls, females and bred heifers.

At-Large – Keith Schrick Keith Schrick has been involved in the beef industry all his life. He showed Angus heifers in FFA

and that led him to Oklahoma State University where he received a B.S. in Agricultural Education.

Keith’s involvement with the Chi breed began in June of 1974 when he began using Chianina semen on commercial and Angus heifers. From that start, Keith has raised percentage cattle, Fullblood Chianina and is currently using Fullblood semen from his original herd sire, Purple Marque 6H, to expand the genetic base of the Chiangus and Angus cattle at Schrick Land and Cattle, Ltd., in Millsap, Texas. Keith operates SLC in partnership with his wife Dana, and their sons, Jason and his wife Andrea and son Jaden; and Josh and his sons Kagen and Kooper.

Schrick Land & Cattle has been a mainstay in the Chi breed for over 30 years. SLC has raised and exhibited numerous champions over the years and exhibited the Grand Champion Chiangus Bull at the 2006 NAILE. Recent credits include, as a syndicate member, the 2011 Fort Worth Grand Champion Chiangus Bull and the 2011 Indiana State Fair Grand Champion Chiangus Bull.

Jason & Josh were both involved with Chi cattle growing up and that tradition is now being carried on to the next generation with grandsons Kagen, Jaden and Kooper.

“After being on the board of the ACA the past three years I would like to continue being involved in shaping the direction of our breed for the future,” Keith said. “I have seen many changes in our breed since the beginning and I believe we are positioning our breed to play a larger role in the future of the beef industry. I am committed to doing my part affecting small and large breeders alike. Please consider me for the at large position of the American Chianina Association Board when casting your vote.”

At-Large – Chad Wilson Chad Wilson and his family own and operate Wilson Cattle Company located near Cloverdale, Indiana. Wilson Cattle Company maintains approximately 300 cows. In addition to raising ChiAngus and ChiMaines, they also maintain a Purebred Angus and Hereford herd. Wilson Cattle Company uses artificial insemination and embryo transplant extensively to enhance genetic progress.

Wilson Cattle Company has an annual production sale each September selling around 100 head. In April they have a fall born show calf internet sale. In addition to selling purebred cattle to the purebred breeders and junior members, Wilson Cattle Company sells approximately 100 bulls each year to commercial cattlemen. Many of these bulls are sold in the Indiana area and also through Profit Maker Bulls in Nebraska. Chad and his family derive their entire income from their cattle operation.

Chad is the past 2011 All-American Angus Manager of the Year, 2001 National Angus Herdsman of the Year, 1998 All-American Angus Herdsman of the Year and 1997 Indiana Hereford Breeder of the Year. Chad has judged well over 250 shows at the national, state and local levels in 24 states and Canada. On The Edge Of Common Sense

Farming…A Life Changing Experience

K

eith was driving me into Edmonton, AB on Hwy 26 from the west. The large grain and cattle farms began to shatter into smaller pieces of property; 40 acres, 20 acres, or 12 acres. The countryside was still green and well kept with fields of 5 horses or 3 cows. Usually it included a nice home with landscaping and a manicured entrance.

“More farm ground is disappearing every year,” said Keith, noting the loss of big farmsteads. He was right but it has been going on since the pilgrims set foot in Newfoundland, it is the inexorable roll of civilization.

These smaller plots, “ranchettes,” are a stage in this progression. But, I’ve noticed one very positive side of those new “rural lifestylers.” With the intention to teach their children some connection to the land and livestock, or for their own sake, they take on projects like gardening, raising sheep, llamas, rabbits, goats, ducks, horses or cows. And regardless whether it is an organic garden, a litter of pigs or one calf, once they get their hands dirty they begin to have an inkling of what it takes to make food out of dirt and water. It is a lifechanging experience.

I think that before any person is tricked into sending money to PETA, the Humane Society of the United States, ALF, ELF, or any of those two-faced groups whose goal includes the elimination of modern farming practices, that person should be allowed to raise at

least one baby Holstein calf from birth to edible, or to grow enough vegetables in one summer to feed a family for just seven days.

Once they are engaged in the process of raising food, they will appreciate that farming is a complicated process that guarantees risk, pitfalls, hard work and commitment. But they will also comprehend the sense of accomplishment of becoming part of nature, not just the skim on the top. This experience will qualify them to examine with a keener eye the often sleazy, forked-tongued and gratuitously morbid supplications for money, money, money from the animal rights grubbers.

Our twenty-acre-neighbors will gain the ability to distinguish their local Humane Societies, county agents, district agriculturalists, and veterinarians from the National Beggars Association of ANTI’s who haven’t raised a calf, had it butchered, or fed their family for a week from their own labors in the soil.

My advice to you farmers and ranchers who miss the old days, is to befriend your new neighbors and offer to teach them Beginning Agriculture 101. Let them experience the deep pride one gets from personally participating in one of life’s most basic occupations.

They will learn where food comes from. And, I repeat, it is life changing.

Lester Ward • MarLes Acres • Versailles, Ohio "Once a Showman, always a Showman!"

Born September 17, 1922, Lester E. Ward Jr. was raised on a large farm in Indiana. At that time horses were the power behind farming. The days were long and the evenings were filled with tired, young, hardworking families. He began working in a factory near Richmond, Indiana after graduating from high school and then enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps when WWII broke out. He was onboard a United States Air fighter; a B-17, when it was shot down across enemy lines. He became a WWII Prisoner of War and went through the “Long March” of the concentration camps in Germany.

As WWII came to an end, thankfully, he was released back into the hands of the United States. He began a lengthy three month recovery stay at a hospital. When he was well enough, he was honorably discharged from the military and received The Purple Heart.

As Lester moved forward from the war and overcame The Great Depression, he became partners with Hershal Fleagle. Together they formed a successful painting and interior design business. Lester took great pride in his work and eventually he became known for his ability to match colors no matter what they were. He was so good at painting he was offered a job in Cincinnati. He declined the offer so he could marry Marlene.

It was love at first sight. In 1949, she became Marlene Bowman-Ward, who is now his wife of sixty-two years, and they moved into their current home.

After their marriage, Lester started working with his in-laws, shelling and hauling grain for the government.

Unfortunately, he was involved in an accident at a grain storage which mangled his left hand. The doctor who performed the surgery had to reconstruct the entire hand. After recovering from such a traumatic accident, Lester knew that painting professionally was no longer an option so he began running a dry feed lot cattle operation. He processed as many as 1,000 head per year.

In 1978 he was introduced to the show cattle world. He purchased his first show heifer at the Jackson Mill Auctions in West Virginia. This was no ordinary show heifer or just a commercial heifer; it was a Chianina (Chi) heifer.

From this point on, a legacy began that not only changed the lives of Lester and his family, but also many lives throughout the United States. He became a member of the Ohio Chi Association in 1978, and has been a loyal member to this day. As his breeding of Chi cattle became more nationally known and they became

more involved in agriculture, he and Marlene received several notable awards.

One of the awards was distributed by the House of Representatives, Keith Faber, House district 77, Diana Fessler, House district 79, Jon Husted, Speaker of the House; also part of the Darke County Chamber of Commerce.

This award was presented on behalf of the 126th General Assembly of Ohio. This award was for their committed service to agricultural. In 1997, he received another award in Maryland for his dedication to the livestock industry. Lester and Marlene were awarded the Who’s Who award in 2000 and he has also been “Herdsman of the Year” numerous times throughout his career. Lester and five of his friends were the founders, and first board members, of the Darke County Cattlemen’s Association.

He says he remembers this like it was yesterday. “We began holding our meetings at Deb Labig’s home and she had pie”, he said, “she made the best pie.” During the 2011 Darke County Fair, Roy White presented him with an honorary member award on behalf of the Darke County Cattlemen’s Association; the same association he helped to create.

Lester recently traveled to Mississippi with his good friend Mark DeHaven who also raises Chi Cattle. When asked to share his feelings about Lester, Mark said that there are three things he most appreciates about Lester.

First is his “E.F. Hutton” factor. When Lester speaks about cattle, people need to listen. He is extremely knowledgeable in developing superior Chi herds. Secondly, Lester has been an ambassador of the Chi breed for decades. As an example, during this trip to Mississippi, Mark learned that the particular farm that they visited was founded through Lester’s blood lines over the course of many years. There were over 100 head of brood cows. Lester not only sold this gentleman cattle, he sold him in to a breed that would produce higher weights, heavier muscle patterns and higher market value. Thirdly, Lester Ward is a lifetime friend. Mark

Lester Ward • MarLes Acres • Versailles, Ohio laughs when he says that Lester reminds him of Norm in the television show Cheers. When he shows up at a cattle show, everyone knows his name. Mark has developed a close, personal relationship with Lester. There are times when they disagree about cattle, but at the end of the day, they agree to disagree and remain close friends.

When asked what his most memorable moment in his whole career has been; Lester replied, “It was when my grand-daughter won reserve grand champion heifer in Louisville.” He goes on to say how proud she made him with her hard work and dedication. He says, “She was amazing in the show ring and amazing with

her animals.” When Lester was told that he had a very good showman at the county fair, he replied, “Once a showman, always a showman, you just never forget how… at the county fair my granddaughter and I have fun and always show against each other, but she doesn’t let me win very often.”

Lester says that he has friends and fond memories from many places in the United States. The National Show in Louisville will always be his favorite. Not only does it give him the opportunity to show the breed he loves, but to also reunite with lifelong friends.

orking with Lester has been a truly life changing and influential experience in my life. I've had quite a few moments where Lester and I have sat around in his barn and just talked about his history in the cattle business. As far as accomplishments go, he's told me about so many different things and I’ve seen so many trophies and banners that I couldn't name any specifically. The best bet to learn about his accomplishments would be to go in his garage and do a 360; the walls are lined with banners and shelves full of trophies.

Currently Lester runs 15 cows and still does all the typical daily management involved with a beef cattle operation, but mainly the feeding since he installed automatic water at every pen and at his pasture he keeps his cows at to make it easier. He hired me in the summer of 2009 and since then he hasn't done as much of the work involved with a show cattle operation (i.e. washing, drying, breaking calves for shows), but he stays involved when he can and it’s a pleasure to work side by side with him. ~Written by Mason Perez

Lester is a man who always follows through on what he says he will do, an admirable quality from a man we know we can count on. Lester is a man of his word and a face in the Chianina industry that many people know and have come to respect. He and Marlene could be seen at all of the Ohio shows and he is very involved in the Ohio Chianina Association. He even came to our organizational meeting for the 2012 Chi Jr. Nationals, which was held during this years Ohio State Fair.

Lester has helped improve the Chianina breed as a whole and has always kept up on the good bulls, while always looking for ways to improve his own cow/calf operation. We have become better people for having had the chance and privilege of knowing him.

e had the honor and privilege of getting to really know Lester Ward after he partnered up with Winegardner Show Cattle on a heifer named Sunflower, a Reserve National Champion who also won the Fort Worth Stock Show. Since that time Lester has bought a few more high-powered cows from us as well. Lester owns and operates MarLes Acres with his wife Marlene and as recently as last year he was still exhibiting his own cattle at the Ohio State Fair. He even showed his own Chianina bull in 2009 at the Ohio State Fair.

Lester has always been very independent and does all of the daily care for his cattle, even breaking, washing and marketing of his calves. Over the past few years he has put a few of his calves in our sale and he became part of our team. We have traveled to Louisville together and he has had a few heifers in our show string in the past as well.

I

n February of 1999 my wife and sons were in Kearney, Neb., at the Cattlemen’s Classic with bulls for the Chianina shows and sales and I was in Des Moines, Iowa, with cattle for our Iowa Chi Classic sale.

Pam called me one evening and said, “There’s the nicest man here from Indiana that really likes our bulls and I think he may try to buy one”. That man was Everett Tom. We were fortunate enough to have the Grand Champion bull that year and Everett did indeed buy him, along with Jerry Adamson’s Grand Champion Female. The bloodlines from those two animals still figure prominently in the bloodlines of his herd.

That chance meeting has grown to be a friendship with one of the most sincere, decent and humble persons you would ever meet. To meet Everett you would never now that he with his wife Marie, working side by side every day with their children and grandchildren, manage a farming operation that encompasses thousands and thousands of acres. A trip to Tom Farms always includes a tour of the massive farming operation, grain handling systems and fleet of equipment, AFTER you go through the cattle.

Everett’s passion for Chianina cattle runs deep. Tom Farms has hosted numerous field days and open houses spreading the word about this great breed. The “Barbara” cow family has set an absolute standard for quality and consistency at Ard Ridge Cattle Company. Our original Barbara 842J was purchased as an open heifer calf from the Shike Family in the fall of 1999 as an open heifer calf. She was Champion Chiangus female the following year at Junior Nationals for Julie Branscum in the summer of 2000. From there she later began production, and her firstborn was called “Perfection”. Ard Ridge Perfection was a 2-time Division Champion at the NAILE and also Grand Champion at Kentucky, Ohio and Tennesse State Fairs. When you think of cows that have dominated in the show ring and gone on to be productive you have got to have SF Nurse’s Aide 378N on your list. This daughter of Dr. Who was the Grand Champion Chianina Female at the 2004 Ohio State Fair as well as a division winner at the 2004 NAILE. Some may say that her show career isn’t exceptional but her true value lies in what she has done since her last show. Nurse’s Aide 378N has generated over $275,000 in revenue to date and is still being flushed regularly for Jones Show Cattle and Ventura Farms.

Daughters of Nurse’s Aide have been very successful both in the sale ring and the show ring. In the 2008 High Standards Female Sale a daughter sired by TJSC Hot Commodity, JSC My Girl 13U, commanded a $33,000 price tag selling to the Grauer family of Ohio. This heifer garnered many banners including Grand Champion in the 2009 She’s A Lady MaineTainer show, Grand Champion in division at the 2009 Maine Jr. Nationals, Reserve division at the 2009 North American and Grand Champion Overall 2008 Ohio AGR. Another daughter from the same sale named JSC Madonna 49U was purchased for $19,000 by David Parks of Michigan. This heifer was competitive at several Ohio Best shows throughout the year as well as being named Grand Champion MaineTainer at the Ohio State Fair. Last but certainly not least are a pair of daughters that sold in the 2010 High Standards female sale that were both sired by the MaineAnjou bull Wisdom. One daughter sold to Blind Badger Ranch of Colorado for $10,500 and a second daughter sold to the Stertzbach family of Ohio for $7,500. Both of these heifers will be campaigned as bred females this fall.

I have always show Chi cattle and my family’s cow herd has had Chi influence, but in the past couple of years have been more involved in National Junior Heifer Shows. The people that are associated with the Chi breed are very good to get along with and we enjoy being involved in the association.

Who has been your mentor & why?.......................My mentor over the past few years has been Scott Campbell. He has helped my brother and me in so many ways.

He has been a big part of our recent years of success. He has helped us from clipping and fitting and even making us figure it out when we have our disagreements. He has always been there to help us with a new idea if something happens with the calves.

His crew help is really nice to work with too.

My steer this year, Benz. He had a birth mark on his nose on his show side and when I first saw him I knew he was my steer. In the beginning he was a little bit of a pain but having to work with him more made us stronger as a team. After the first show he became the biggest baby. I was the only one that he would do anything for. He was also trained to eat treats. Him and Curtis’ steer would stand at the gates and beg for treats. Ending up with Champion Intermediate Showman and Reserve Overall Crossbred Steer in the Ohio BEST program put the icing on the cake too.

Most embarrassing show moment:..........At State Fair with a little feeder heifer and she saw something that spooked her and she drug me across the ring. I didn’t get hurt but after I had imprints of phone and wallet that were in my pocket on my jeans and had to walk around with the dirt imprints for a while until I got new jeans.

Why do you show/raise Chi cattle?.... They have added benefits to the herd and have helped in the show ring with extra look and performance.

Who has been your mentor & why?........................................... Scott Campbell and Jeff Paulsen. Scott has been there helping me get my calves ready for the shows. We got my heifer from Jeff and he has helped with her the whole year. Both of them have encouraged me to continue to fit and clip calves to keep getting better as a fitter.

Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed:......Get involved early.

hi West Cattle is a family operation near Castle Dale in southeastern Utah.

Monroe Magnuson is a fourth generation rancher. “My parents started buying this place when they were first married. My father died when I was 5, and my mother kept it going until my brother and I were old enough to ranch.”

His parents had Herefords. “My grandfather—my mother’s father—had one of the biggest cattle operations here. He had a range operation, running on the desert in winter and in the mountains during summer. He went to Arizona and bought Brahma bulls to put on the Hereford cows, back when that was taboo. Even though he got docked on the calves because of the ear and being crossbred, he made more money (due to hybrid vigor and extra gain). This is where we got first-hand experience to see that the crossbred or composite would really work,” says Magnuson.

“When I was in junior high and high school, my mother (Ina Lee Magnuson) was on the local junior livestock show committee. Our show was open to anybody in Utah, and it had been years since anyone local had won it, so we started showing. We had a few Hereford-Brahma crosses at that time and those didn’t make good show steers, even though we tried. So we bought a few steers and heifers, and started raising our own club calves. That’s how we got into Chiangus.” He showed the heifers, then bred them to raise more club calves.

“After I left college I started my own club calf sale called the Style in the Rockies (in Ogden, Utah) and we sold a lot of show steers. Over the years I shifted into seedstock and became a sale manager for that sale. My main focus now is on the cowherd and selling bulls and a few show heifer prospects.”

He has two breeds—Chiangus and Angus. With everything that’s going on in

Chi-West Cattle (continued) Angus right now, he’s a little leery about the purebred Angus business. Composites have a lot going for them. “When I look at the age and productivity of my cowherd, even though it’s easier to sell Angus bulls, on the female side the Chiangus cows walk all over the Angus, especially in longevity and as range cattle,” he says.

“We’re a cow-calf operation and run on BLM winter range from October through January, and Forest Service permits for summer (June to October). We raise seedstock, but in a commercial way,” he says.

“The Chiangus bulls are now well accepted, but it took awhile. When we sold bulls by private treaty, many people called about Angus bulls. When they got here to look at the Angus bulls, they couldn’t get past the Chiangus,” he says.

Those bulls were more impressive than the straight Angus.

He served 2 terms on the board of the American Chianina Association. “The Association had feedlot and carcass data to prove the profitability of the Chi and Chiangus crosses as both feedlot and maternal cattle, but it was hard to get our message out to the cattle industry. The ACA is a small association and it’s hard to compete with the deep pockets of some of the major associations,” he says.

“Chiangus are not universally accepted yet, but once people use one of these bulls, they’re sold on this composite.

Most of our customers run cattle on range. Once in awhile we have a bull that’s special and we send him to the Midwest

or syndicate him, but our main customers are ranchers who need good bulls,” says Magnuson.

This is desert range country and cattle have to be functional and efficient. “This country wasn’t meant to be farmed. The best way to use it is with livestock. We farmed for years, but now I seldom put up any hay. I can buy a lot of hay (even when it’s expensive) for what the equipment and interest on it would cost to farm the kind of crops we grow here. Our ranch is mostly pasture.”

He’s been moving from winter to spring calving. “We used to calve in January, then February. We started looking at data and realized March and April calves were as big in the fall as the February calves, so why bother with cold weather. I am slowly moving them back a few weeks each year,” he says.

He runs part of his cows on public range shared with 8 other ranchers. “I try to have everything bred before they go out the 10th of June. I synchronize and AI everything that’s at least 45 days post partum, then turn the herd bull in, and wait one heat cycle before we go to summer range,” he says.

Running on range like commercial cattle, these cows have to prove themselves, and Magnuson tries to keep improving them. “It’s interesting how much the cattle have changed from when we quit showing and started raising more functional cattle that fit their environment.” He feels the best way to judge cattle is through the ears of a horse— following them through rugged country.

“The important thing is making sure they fit their environment. The frustrating thing about that—even though we can collect all the data we want—is that it’s often years before we really know whether our analysis was right or wrong,” he says.

“Years ago a well-known sheep breeder told me that Mother Nature will tell us when we’ve gone too far.

Our environment gives us the constraints within which we have to function.”

He sells bulls with four other breeders.

Their sale, the Quest of the West Bull and Horse Sale, is held in Spanish Fork, Utah, the first Friday in March. Barker Cattle Company (Elba, Idaho), Circle Four Simmental (Castle Dale, Utah), Sorrenson Angus, Shandar Angus and Loveless Gelbvieh (Spanish Fork, Utah) join with Magnuson to sell 100-110 bulls which make a nice mix of Angus, Chiangus, Simmental, SimAngus, Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls.

Magnuson and Brock Truman also host an invitational ranch and performance horse sale.

The five operations provide every feasible piece of data to their customers.

The cattle are ultrasounded for carcass traits and have EPDs on traits each breed association provides. The bulls are tested for BVD, fertility and trich tested and PAP tested for High Altitude Disease.

“Many of our customers run cattle at elevations around 10,000 feet, so High Altitude Disease (Brisket Disease) can be a serious issue. We also plan on implementing DNA testing for carcass and efficiency traits, as tests become more economical,” he says.

“When you look at the history of the beef industry and trends in cattle type, it’s amazing how many fads there have been—large frame, small frame, extreme muscling, etc. Now some studies are saying we’re getting feedlot cattle too fat.

As seedstock producers we can’t seem to hit the middle of the road and be happy.

Mother Nature will not allow extremes, so that should be the philosophy to follow.”

More Than a Handshake Why the Beef Industry Needs Written Embryo Transfer Contracts

ll parties involved with embryo transfers should consider memorializing the terms of the agreement in writing. Contracts are important because it clearly defines the terms of the agreement and obligations of both parties. Each party in an embryo transfer transaction has specific interests to protect. Below are some suggested terms for the beef industry that should be included in contracts dealing with embryo transfers.

Recipient Agreement – Cattle producers who are selling embryo transfer recipient should make sure that the following terms are included in the written contract: 1) sale/rental price of recipient; 2) payment terms including penalties for late payments; 3) instructions for receipt of embryos; 4) embryo transfer fees; 5) dates/procedures/costs associated with pregnancy checks (e.g., palpation, ultrasound); 6) duration that recipient will stay under the care of owner and any daily boarding/maintenance fees (e.g., feed, pasture); 7) if necessary, reimbursement for routine veterinary care and transportation; 8) limitation of liability for congenital birth defects or reasonable calving difficulties; and, 9) if appropriate, security on the embryo transfer calf and the assignment of necessary registration papers.

Furthermore, the recipient owner may request additional fees for genetic testing or marketing services.

Breeder Agreement – On the other hand, breeders should make sure that the recipient owner agrees to bear the burden that the recipient cow is: 1) in good health and obtains necessary vaccinations; 2) within the ages of two to four years (or whatever age is appropriate for the herd) and not a first calfheifer; 3) has an acceptable body condition score; and, 4) if appropriate, a certain breed or color (e.g., Angus influenced, solid black/red hided recipient cows).

The breeder may want to hold the recipient owner liable for gross negligence or intentional misconduct relating to the care of the recipient and the progeny including calving complications and require that the recipient owner use best management practices. If the recipient cow owner will be raising the calf until weaning and retaining ownership of the recipient cow, the breeder may want to list special management terms (e.g., early weaning at 90 days, creep feeding, DNA testing).

Flush Agreement – If a cattle breeder is purchasing a flush from another owner, the breeder may want to memorialize a minimum number of transferable embryos from the flush (e.g., five embryos) and the date/procedures for the receipt of the flush. Additionally, this breeder would also want to make sure that the flush is guaranteed to be what was ordered (e.g., free of certain genetic defects, use of sexed semen) and note liquidated damages in case of an error. Conversely, the owner of the flushed cow will want to enumerate the payment terms including shipping expenses and ensure that he/she is not responsible for the transfer of the embryos to the recipient or calving problems that may occur.

General Considerations – There are also some general considerations that the parties should consider such as the name and contact information of the parties (including D/B/A or corporate business entity), choice of law, and attorneys’ fees for the prevailing party in a dispute. The contract should also be binding on the heirs, successors and assigns. Additionally, some parties wish to have an arbitration clause or alternatively a forum selection clause for a neutral courtroom. Some embryo transfer contracts also require credit card information to be used as security for late payment. Finally, each party of the contract should agree to comply with all federal, state, and local laws including livestock animal cruelty laws.

More Than a Handshake (continued) embryo transfers put their agreements in writing. The agriculture industry is notoriously trustworthy oftentimes doing business with a handshake.

Having terms of an agreement in writing is not an indication of a lack of trust; instead, it is a sound business practice. Things go wrong outside of everyone’s control. Make sure everyone involved in the transaction is clear on the terms of the agreement in a legally enforceable contract and all parties’ interests are protected. Contract law is state specific so it is recommended that beef producers seek counsel from an attorney licensed in their jurisdiction.

REMINDER Minimum Percentage Rule to Take Effect Jan. 1, 2012 at All ACA Nationally Sponsored Shows & Sales ACA Board Policy Adopted April 2010 “Breeding cattle born on or after January 1, 2012 must have a minimum of 6.25% Chianina blood in order to participate in ACA nationally sponsored shows or sales. Nationally sponsored shows or sales include the following: The Southwest Stock Show & Rodeo in Ft. Worth; the Junior National; the National Show in Louisville; and the National Western Stock Show in Denver.”

Breeding cattle with less than 6.25% Chianina blood are still eligible for registration and may still be shown or sold at any show or sale other than ACA nationally sponsored shows or sales.

Chiangus Council Meets In Iowa

D

ennis and Sheryl Clarahan were the gracious hosts for the September 16 – 17 gathering of the Chiangus Council in Harper, Iowa. The meeting started Friday night with a social designed to renew friendships and swap stories. Great food and much laughter prevailed throughout the night.

Topping the evening festivities was a history of the early years provided by Richard Koonce, long-time supporter of Chiangus and one of the earliest employees of the ACA. ACA CEO Stan Comer gave opening remarks Saturday morning, and introduced the two ACA board of director nominees attending the meeting (Bryan Schaefer – at large, and Val Shields, Southeast). Jerry Ellis presented opening information pertaining to the current cattle inventory, and the increasing percentage of black-hided cattle over the past 15 years. Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State University exten-

sion beef specialist, shared data he had gleaned from the ACA database for EPDs of the whole database, as well as individual members’ in-herd data. The ACA trend lines were compared to other breeds trend lines to show differences in the data. It is obvious the small number of individual registrations have kept our trend line relatively flat instead of rising. In the absence of Dan Dorn, Decatur County Feedyards, Dr. Weaber shared the information Dan had sent pertaining to his feedyard.

After a great beef meal prepared by the Clarahan family, Dr. Weaber continued his presentation with a video question-and-answer session with Galen Fink, reputable Angus and Charlois breeder of Randolph, Kansas.

The Fink family were the recipients of the 2000 BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year, the 2008 CAB Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award, and the 2011 AICA Seedstock Producer of the Year award. Dr. Weaber and Galen discussed the role of Chi-

angus and the industry perceptions, as well as the strengths of Chiangus cattle.

They have given their permission for this video to be used by the ACA. It was very well-done, and will be a valuable resource for Chiangus breeders.

Gary Felger, Igenity, presented information that Chiangus breeders can use to determine those genetic traits that are important to the individual breeders as they work to improve the traits most important to them. Richard Arnold then gave closing remarks to wrap-up the day before the group visited the Clarahan farm to view cattle.

No definite location has been planned for the next Chiangus Council meeting.

irst thing first, I must say - what a blessing and honor it has been to serve such a wonderful association for the past four months! I am truly appreciative for the gracious welcome that I have received from the members and patrons of the ACA. Fall is here and the ACA staff is excited for shows and sales to commence. As business starts to pick up in the office, I would like to remind you of a few key points that will help speed up the registration process and save you money.

REGISTRATION TIPS: • Make sure to fill out paperwork completely and properly. This will save time and keep your paperwork from being held up for clerical reasons in the office.

• If you have any questions while filling out paperwork, call us!

I know it might seem like you have a silly question, but trust me… we’ve heard them all before.

• Something to remember – all AI sires and donor dams have to be tested for genetic abnormalities and DNA Parental verified.

If you know you’re going to be registering embryo calves out of a Dam, get her tested ahead of time.

• The new rule does not take affect on any calves born in 2011.

The rule states that any calves born on or after January 1, 2012 must be 6.25% Chianina to show at an ACA sponsored show.

Advertising Deadlines: Copy and photographs for ads must reach the ACJ office the first of the month preceding date of issue (ie November 1 for the December issue). Ads postmarked after deadline or placed after the deadline will be charged an additional $50.

Copy Changes: Changes to the advertisements after the deadline will only be made if time permits and will incur additional charges for time and materials involved in the change.

Minimum charge $50.

Advertising Content: The ACJ reserves the right to refuse any advertising copy at its sole discretion. The ACJ assumes no responsibilities for the accuracy of the advertising content as submitted. Advertisers assume all responsibility for the accuracy and truthfulness of submitted advertising containing pedigrees or statements regarding performance.

Advertisers shall indemnify and hold harmless the ACJ for any claims concerning advertising content as submitted.

Digital Photography: Many advertisers are choosing to supply digital photos rather than glossy prints for use in their ACJ advertising. The ACJ will not be responsible for the quality of photo reproduction or printing as a result of any digital photos supplied. The ACJ will not be held liable for any financial compensation or discounted advertising as a result of poor reproduction quality of digital photos. All digital photos supplied for use in the ACJ will be used at the advertiser's risk.

MEMBERSHIP TIPS: • Junior memberships are a one-time fee of $50 and expire January 1st after the junior’s 22nd birthday. A complimentary three-month journal subscription is included.

• Adult memberships are $100 per year and include a year subscription to the ACJ. • If you plan to register more than one head per year, the membership is usually the cheaper way to go, especially for juniors.

For all of you procrastinators out there, online registrations are the quickest and usually the easiest way to get registrations completed and out in a timely manner. In order to do online registrations, you will need to know your member number (digits only!) and your password, which should have been included in your new member packet. If you do not have your password or need help, please do not hesitate to send me an email or call the office.

WOW! I sound like a bossy old hag after all of that. Must be the big sister coming out in me... that tends to happen sometimes.

I am very much looking forward to my first (that’s right… I said FIRST) NAILE experience, so if you see a short, big-haired, blue eyed girl running around looking lost, I’d appreciate it if you’d introduce yourself and then point me in the right direction!
