For ten days, the city will welcome performers from Brazil to Czechia and beyond as well as the finest Scottish creativity, funded by EXPO

We are performing all across the city with daily programmes in the iconic Spiegeltent, the atmospheric Jazz Bar, and the incredible acoustic at St Bride’s Centre, as well as pop-up concerts in restaurants, distilleries, churches and community centres across the city.

On top of our programme of concerts we have our much-loved, familyfriendly, free events, MARDI GRAS and EDINBURGH FESTIVAL CARNIVAL, Edinburgh’s largest and most vibrant multicultural event in the heart of the city. We look forward to welcoming you.

LAURA JURD: FROM FOLK TO FREEDOM

Award-winning British trumpeter Laura Jurd tells us about the inspiration behind her curated programme for EJBF24.

The art of keeping melodies alive - teaching tunes to one another by playing and singing is integral to the traditions of folk and jazz music. There is something improvisatory about the passing on of folk melodies, as individuals make melodies their own, hear different nuances, transforming them as they are passed from village to village, overseas and down through generations. The sound of a musician's roots is at the heart of so much music I love.

All the bands playing as part of this series have a connection to folk music - be it Shetlander Norman Willmore’s modern communication of ancient tunes, to the mystery of the Italian mountains in Ruth Goller’s abstract vocalisations. Well-travelled trumpet player Chris Batchelor’s scavenged grooves from across the globe, whilst Christos Stylianides breaks through the improvisation barrier via trumpet and electronics. Cellist Simone Seales offers otherworldly improvisations steeped in classical music and American history, and jazz/rock outfit Glasshopper present music drenched in huge melodies and urban perseverance.

It has been a joy and privilege to shine a light on these world-class artists, all of whom have something truly special and unique to communicate in their music.

Since the very beginning, Czech jazz has always found ways to thrive, innovate and express cultural identity, even in the most restrictive of conditions. The influence of expatriate musicians like George Mraz, Miroslav Vitous and Jan Hammer, have cemented its place in the wider jazz narrative.

Today, the legacy of Czech jazz continues to influence new generations of artists who are at the forefront of modern jazz in Europe. Featuring a curated programme of top Czech artists including, Endemit, Kristina Barta Trio, Nela Dusová, Treetop, Trio Henya, and Undo Redo, audiences in Edinburgh will have the unique opportunity to experience this legacy through a selection of performances that promise to reflect the vibrant and diverse jazz culture of Czechia.

Programmed in association with Veronika Friedlová of Mladí ladí jazz festival. Part of the Year of Czech Music organised in collaboration with the Czech Centre London and SoundCzech.

Get ready to party! This eight-piece Glaswegian funk-soul powerhouse deliver untouchable live performances. Headed by soul bearer, Tom McGuire, this funky collective blew the roof off the tent in 2022 with music full of vitality as classic pop sensibility meets all out funk. Expect pumped-up grooves, tight musical arrangements, and James Brown-esq funk that will have the dance floor jumping.

Lauded by critics, Tommy Smith’s KARMA saw the brilliant Scottish saxophonist lead a band of virtuosic musicians on an adventure that draws on influences from around the world. This year, he presents a new suite played by an incredible band comprising Tommy Smith on tenor and soprano saxophones and Shakuhachi flute, renowned pianist Pete Johnstone, bass guitar sensation Kevin Glasgow and star drummer Alyn Cosker. Expect music of gobsmacking energy and superb inventiveness.

Winner of 2023 BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician of the Year, pianist Ben Shankland continues to make a name on the Scottish jazz scene. Combining an ever-expanding catalogue of original music with carefully selected and rearranged renditions of classics, his band sound soulful beyond their years. For this special concert, his trio of Ewan Hastie (bass) and Chun-Wei Kang (drums) will be joined by Helena Kay (sax) and Ben MacDonald (guitar).

Vocalist and saxophonist Kimberley Tessa has been making waves across the Scottish jazz scene. Awarded ‘Rising Star’ at the 2023 Scottish Jazz Awards, she is member of Milhouse Collective and The Vintage Girls and will be performing a set of jazz and R’n’B influenced original music interspersed with standards.

Influenced by US musician Charlie Hunter’s distinctive hybrid guitar sound, Nathan Somevi delivers uplifting and hypnotic rhythms. His music is tinged with gospel, a nod to the to the church music with which he was raised. His trio work up a groove with thundering sax and powerful drumming, the perfect foil for Somevi’s skillful guitar.

BRBQ or Brady Rice Bossa Quartet celebrate the blending of samba and jazz. Combining flowing melody with rhythmic energy, they bring a freshness and authenticity to playing the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, João Bosco and other giants of Brazilian jazz. James Brady (trumpet/flugelhorn), Mario Caribe (bass) and Stu Brown (drums/percussion) join forces with a leading light and student of Brazilian piano styles, Ed Rice. The internationally renowned Paul Towndrow joins them on flute.

Martin Harley is an award-winning roots, blues and slide guitarist. Blending delta blues and rich acoustic folk, with a snarling rock ‘n roll edge and sweet vocal harmonies, Total Guitar Magazine rates him as one of the world’s greatest acoustic guitarists. Big Boy Bloater is an entertainer of the highest order. The guitarist and singer/songwriter has a huge character with a voice that has been compared to Howlin’ Wolf crossed with Tom Waits. A regular at major festivals across the US and Europe, his shows are always impressive, energetic, and fun. The afternoon opens with a set from two talented Scottish blues guitarists as Sandy Tweeddale and his band are joined by Gus Munro. Both these guitarists and singers are inspired by the sophisticated slide styles of Derek Trucks and the Allman Brothers.

Scottish Balkan-celtic fusion octet, Blue Giant Orkestar are a melting pot of blazing brass, searing fiddle, pounding tuba, one enormous Russian concert accordion and a percussion section that could flatten your house. Fuelled by Balkan horos, Serbian brass festivals, Turkish pop songs, Bulgarian accordion fireworks and even a spot of Scottish ceilidh, their music is powerful, dynamic and original.

With delivery that ranges from gutsy and bluesy to delicate and personal, her rich velvety vocal tones are enhanced by Paul Harrison (piano), Brian Molley, (saxophone), Mario Caribe (double bass) and Max Popp (drums).

Traditional Jazz Band of Fremont Christian School perform an eclectic repertoire ranging from traditional jazz standards to their unique versions of popular music. The group will be performing across Europe this Summer and we are delighted they have added Edinburgh to their list! The perfect opportunity to hear a jazz big band in full flight.

FERGUS McCREADIE OCTET

Commissioned in 2022, its premiere performance garnered a standing ovation and a host of acclaim. This year, Fergus McCreadie reprises this landmark project with his trademark folkinfused themes ebbing and flowing between assertive and unrestrained horns and powerful percussive grooves. His regular trio of David Bowden (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums), are joined by drummer (Graham Costello) and three saxophonists (Matt Carmichael, Harry Weir, Paul Towndrow) plus the stellar trumpeter Laura Jurd. Expect improvisatory adventures combining spontaneous jazz and folkloric influences from some of the best players on the scene.

One of the top blues bands in Scotland, Blue Milk are a oneof-a-kind roots group harking back to traditional turnof-the-century Delta blues and 60s/70s electric blues rock. They are absolutely exhilarating live and will be joined by Scottish singer/ songwriter and guitarist Craig Ralston for a festival special.

She may be a new name on the scene, but Rosalind Orr is establishing herself as an instrumentalist and an improviser of quality. She has studied under fellow saxophonists Tommy Smith and Laura Macdonald, and is heavily influenced by players like Cannonball Adderley and Kenny Garrett – don’t miss her EJBF debut.

Playing with rocky, heart-felt, infectious abandon, Glasshopper sees three of the UK’s top young stars Jonathan Chung (saxophone), James Kitchman (guitar) and Corrie Dick (drums) come together. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Paul Motian, but with a more direct and punkier sound that is full of freedom and deep interplay, they intricately weave together moments of sonic bliss and euphoric rock-outs.

King Size Slim are the real deal. Led by award-winning guitarist, singer/songwriter Toby Barelli, they are a force of nature. With their fat roots, unique bluesy voice and larger-than-life personalities they will have you hooked to their authentic sound. Grainne Duffy blends blues, soul, rock and Celtic influences into emotionally supercharged performances, all delivered with a killer combination of vocal strength, range and intensity and guitar virtuosity. Glasgow based guitarist Al Brown is widely known for his authentic style with clean toned lines, and he honed his craft playing with many fine musicians including Tam White, Zoot Money and Rev Doc to name but a few.

Following on from their highly successful projects celebrating the music of The Pearlfishers and Joni Mitchell, the Colin Steele Quartet now turn their attention to cult Scottish pop icons The Blue Nile for this world premiere.They didn’t sound or function like any normal band with their fusion of sophisticated pop and plaintive vocals. Colin and his quartet of Dave Milligan (piano), Calum Gourlay (bass) and Alyn Cosker (drums) give this distinctive music a jazz twist, reimagining this understated pop modernism with love, affection, and huge imagination.

This interactive family show explores the incredible music and inventiveness of early jazz that changed the face of music forever. From sousaphones to gramophones, this travelling museum of curiosities will wow you with rip roaring live music, songs, and instrumental stunts. The audience will get to dance, drum, sing, conduct and even join the band! A magical introduction to live music for young music lovers and their grown-ups.

Secret Path sees Scottish musician and composer Fraser Fifield fronting an exciting trio featuring two stalwarts of the Scottish jazz scene. Expect funky grooves, adventurous compositions with folk and jazz inflections. Fifield’s low whistle the perfect match for Paul Harrison on Wurlitzer piano and Tom Bancroft on drums. Truly unique.

Rising European jazz star, Belgian trombonist Nabou returns to EJBF with an octet comprising five trombones and a rhythm section. The music is a revelation: energetic, playful and progressive. Nabou has handpicked her trombone players, each offering a different flavour which adds to the complexity and excitement of the music.

Combining Brazilian rhythms with the traditional Yoruba music, Ilê Aiyê are a Carnival bloc band from Salvador. Driven by drums and vocals, their Afro-Brazilian music is powerful, spiritual, unique and best experienced live. Since forming in 1974, they have performed all over the world, including at the 2014 World Cup, and we can’t wait to have them in Edinburgh as part of their 50th anniversary tour.

Fronted by virtuoso violinist and singer Seonaid Aitken, the quartet deliver gypsy jazz favourites and self-penned originals with virtuosity, verve and panache. Combining brilliant musicianship and warm personality, these festival favourites recreate the excitement of Rive Gauche Paris of the 30s and 40s, celebrating the Hot Club sounds made famous by Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.

Chris Batchelor is renowned for his distinctive compositions from his days writing for the influential groups Loose Tubes and Big Air. His latest all-star band offers a host of rich textures from East African guitar band grooves to echoes of wistful European folk themes and sinuous lines reminiscent of Arabic music. He is joined by Margrit Hasler (viola), John Parricelli (guitar), Steve Watts (bass) and Paul Clarvis (percussion).

This Belgian piano trio stands out from the crowd. Using simple, hypnotic riffs with electronic effects their music is multi-layered, improvised and visionary, often taking in some groovy urgency or old school stride along the way. Led by saxophonist Sue McKenzie, the summer school is open to musicians over the age of 14 who are ideally around Grade 5 or above on their chosen instrument. The course promises a cross-generational, intensive immersion into the practical aspects of playing jazz, delivered by an expert team of tutors and culminates in a concert as part of the festival programme on Friday 19 July (see page 27).

Step aboard the Maid of the Forth and enjoy an evening of music and spectacular views as you sail alongside the three iconic bridges that cross the river Forth. Setting sail from South Queensferry, this special three-hour cruise features music from house band the Maid of the Forth Stompers as they celebrate their 35th year playing on board. Expect a mixture of dixieland and traditional jazz as well as interesting tales about the local landmarks you will encounter along the way.

Are you ready to uncover the exciting world of sounds and rhythms? Come on a journey with us from jazz music to sonic creation using some crazy instruments and fun props. This creative and interactive workshop is led by saxophonist and educator Sue McKenzie (Jazz for Kids). She is joined by her co-explorers Esther Swift on harp and Jose Rojas on percussion.

Guitarist John Bruce and singer and harmonica player Tim Elliott return to recreate the magic of the legendary Blues ’N’ Trouble. Their deep understanding of the roots of the blues underpinned high energy shows inspired by classic electric Chicago blues and boogie and packed with classic tunes by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson. Gerry Jablonski and the Electric Band deliver infectious blues rock, slow burners, and high-octane blues stompers led by driving guitar riffs. With their unique sound, swagger, and well-honed stagecraft they deliver gusty, powerful performances and they turn the volume up loud! Kicking off the afternoon, Dixie Fried bring their deep and dirty Mississippi rooted blues-rock to the Spiegeltent.

The warm and melodious voice of Jaqueline Djohar celebrates the music of the 30s and 40s, songs by artists such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields.

The multi-award winning musician and composer is fast making his mark on the UK music scene, and his trio features two of Scotland's most talented musicians. Hastie’s skills in jazz improvisation and creativity are balanced by the mastery of Tom Gibb’s touch and melodic sensibility on the piano and supported by the wizardry of Stephen Henderson’s versatility on the drums, creating a modern and mature sound.

Arguably the finest jazz guitarist the UK has produced, Jim Mullen gets into a groove with his take on the songs of Robert Burns. From Banks and Braes to My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, expect hard swinging, melodic, blues-drenched modern jazz, and plenty of musical fireworks as he is joined by David Milligan (piano), Mario Caribe (bass) and Max Popp (drums).

After a stunning EJBF debut in 2023, Sister Cookie is back! From London via Lagos, the charismatic singer and her band deliver a unique blend of 50s/60s blues and jazz, influenced by the West African rhythms learnt from her upbringing. Inspired by greats like Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, her smoky, soulful vocals and stage presence is unmatched.

Jerron Paxton carries the torch for traditional acoustic blues. He’s the most sensational newcomer in the blues since the originals left us. He plays banjo, fiddle, guitar, piano, harmonica, Cajun accordion, and the bones, all of them brilliantly. He sings with a classic weary tone when he wants, and is cheerfully bright on upbeat tunes. He tells stories and jokes that show he’s as smart as a button, easing audiences into a good time. He mixes it all in the true songster tradition: ragtime, hokum, old time, French reels, Appalachian mountain music and, of course, blues, and he always leaves audiences smiling.
