The "Baglio Anselmi" was a winery, built around 1880 and intended for the production of Marsala and the distillation of pure alcohol. The perimeter of the beam is articulated around a large courtyard, today partly used as a garden, according to the location, typical of Sicilian rural dwellings, of the buildings around a fenced space. The two large stores where the barrels were stowed were used as exhibition spaces, characterized by high pointed arches in limestone that mark the space for housing the windows and finds. The Baglio Anselmi was used as a museum in 1986 with the dual purpose of hosting the wreck of the Punic ship and to exhibit significant archaeological evidence illustrating the history of Lilybaeum. The materials on display come mainly from excavation campaigns conducted from the early twentieth century to the present, together with a small group from the “G. Whitaker” from Mozia and from old municipal acquisitions. For the last few years you can find the “Nave Romana”.

free beaches but also equipped bathing establishments. You can find there amazing views and sunbeds where you can relax and spend a holiday of fun and relaxation. For families and sports enthusiasts, the North coast is most suitable. Along the Northern coast, the sea forms a sort of lagoon called "Stagnone". Among the islands composing it stands Mozia, a real open-air museum immersed in a natural botanical garden. The Stagnone lagoon is characterized by shallow waters which, combined with the mild temperature, make it the ideal place for young children and for those who love windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing. The frequent wind allows the most skilled to perform in the most spectacular maneuvers and the shallow waters also allow those who are less able to learn effortlessly. In addition to the beaches? Marsala offers wonderful views and spaces. Let's find them out together.

A few years ago, the Region commissioned Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the greatest Italian directors, to advertise Sicily. When he saw the "Stagnone", he was so impressed by the beauty of this place that he chose it as the final image of the spot. He defined it "the most beautiful sunset in the world".

Mozia was thr Phoenician city located on the island of S. Pantaleo, easily accessible from Marsala (about 6 km from the city center you will find the piers from which the boats take you to the island; they leave every ten minutes). Founded by the Phoenicians (8th century BC), it was destroyed in 397 BC. In Mozia there are the urban remains of the old city and it’s possible to admire the marble statue of a young man, commonly known as the "Giovinetto di Mozia", unique in its kind. It has got Greek origin, and it was found in a Punic province. This aroused much amazement in archaeologists when it was found in 1979. This sculpture represented Italy at the Expo in Japan.

you go to Piazza della Repubblica (Piazza Loggia), you will have the opportunity to admire two of the four remaining gates: Porta Garibaldi (Portamare), and, at right Porta Nuova; on the left at the end of the "Cassaro" was Porta Mazara (destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War) and behind you Porticella (no longer visible). From there, you can start the route to visit the historic center, entirely a pedestrian area.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF CAPO BOEO The origins of Marsala date back to the first two centuries of the Roman imperial age and the third century AD, period when the Colony Helvia Augusta Lilybitanorum was established. Since then, an entire area has been miraculously preserved and now it represents the city's archaeological park. In the area of the Capo Boeo area remains of houses have been found, the most important of which is the insula, brought to light in 1939. The building (or Domus) was built on a fresh water source: the Sibilla Cave Lilibetana. This ancient place of worship, inspired by the worship of water, becomes a baptismal font and, identified as the home of the Sicilian Sibyl, a destination for pilgrims and prophecies.

VISIT THE HISTORICAL WINE FACTORIES Marsala is known for the production of the homonymous wine; British people considered it better than Porto and Madeira and began to market it all over the world, building its success. In 1833, the entrepreneur Vincenzo Florio purchased land on a stretch of beach located between the beams of Ingham-Whitaker and Woodhouse, and he built a factory for the production of Marsala wine. When visiting the Florio cellars, it almost seems that time has stopped in the 1800s: the oak barrels, the department stores, the museum with the tools of the time, and the inevitable tasting will leave you with an unforgettable sensation.

AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES OF SICILY If you are in Marsala between the months of June and October, you cannot miss a dip in the south side of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. A couple of kilometers from the city there are the "beaches" easily accessible by buses that leave from Piazza del Popolo.

THE TYPICAL DISHES OF MARSALA In the restaurants, you can taste the classic dishes of the local tradition, starting from the fish couscous, pasta with sea urchins to the baked pasta. But there are dishes that you absolutely must not miss: the sandwich with the panelle, the cunzato bread, the rianata, and the arancine (on this western side they are pronounced female) for the savory; briosche with ice cream, lemon granita and Sicilian cassata for dessert.

OLD TOWN

The sandwich with the panelle can be found in several kiosks. Almost all bakeries prepare cunzato bread (an inviting and gigantic half loaf cooked by hand topped with cherry tomatoes, origano, the famous capers and the first salt cheese, excellent in the variants with tuna) and rianate (a soft pizza that takes its name from the large quantity of origano with which it is seasoned), a good idea for the lunch break; if you prefer sweet: “brioscia” (pronounced like this) with ice cream or lemon granita are excellent alternatives.

Marsala owes its name to the Arabs (Marsa-Allah port of God), but the original name was Lilybeo, a quadrilateral around which there were the walls in defense of the city with the four gates. Today, if

To round off lunch or want to have a break in the afternoon, we recommend a slice of Sicilian cassata, almost all the pastry shops prepare it.
