NICOLA

LAZZARON Foreign Sales Manager

How has the concept of living changed? In particular, how have coatings/finishes changed? The concept of living has undergone a significant transformation following the pandemic, profoundly influencing habits and the design of both indoor and outdoor spaces. The home has become a multifunctional space, adapting to the new reality of remote work and the demands of a more functional and sustainable lifestyle. Designers increasingly opt for sustainable materials, such as wood from responsibly managed forests (for example, oak). Rooms are designed for dual purposes; dining room walls may host wine racks or books, guest rooms may feature desks, and bedrooms may include exercise equipment. Wooden boiserie is employed to create warmer, healthier, and more welcoming environments or to highlight specific interior details. Regarding colors, neutral tones harmonize with all styles of furnishings, including natural shades, light gray, sand, and other light hues that adapt to various decor styles and enhance the naturalness of the materials used. Interest in wooden floors remains significant, with a continued demand for bold contrasts between light and dark colors, giving rise to two-tone or geometrically patterned floors. The vintage effect, playing with light/dark contrasts in wooden flooring, remains popular in warm brown and gray tones. There is a resurgence of medium-toned brown colors, perhaps with natural knots highlighted by specific surface treatments to impart a more natural feel to the flooring. Two warm-toned wood species that meet this trend are European Walnut and American Walnut. 14

Which are the new demands? The new needs highlight a growing demand for natural and ecofriendly materials, along with sanitizing water-based paints that are solvent-free. There is an increasingly pronounced demand for flooring that is durable over time and easy to clean. Additionally, homes are increasingly desired with small green spaces for moments of outdoor tranquility. For those without a garden, new systems are emerging to optimize interiors or terraces, turning them into extensions of indoor spaces with wooden or other suitable materials. The preferred parquet format is large, and the flooring is uniformly applied throughout the house, extending to walls and/or ceilings, giving the impression of very spacious areas. How has the approach of the decking/cladding system in the building world over the years? Over the years, the approach to the flooring/wall covering system in construction has undergone significant changes. Currently, there is a growing focus on certified raw materials and the quality of the production process. The market is increasingly oriented towards products with low environmental impact while maintaining high quality standards. Eco-sustainability, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable resources have become essential to align with new construction trends, with Green certifications emphasizing this commitment. In summary, the industry is evolving towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

MARCO

AFFRONTE Export Manager

How has the concept of living changed? In particular, how have coatings/finishes changed? After the pandemic, there has been a genuine rethinking of the concept of living. Outdoor spaces have become even more crucial, and there has been an increased concern for home in terms of finishes and attention to detail. The goal is to turn the place where we spend part of our time, with our loved ones, into a cosy and pleasant environment, thus redefining the meaning of home. In this context, it can be said that the market for raised flooring and Impertek’s activities specifically play a significant role. The ease of installation of the pedestal system allows even non-professionals to decorate their terraces and outdoor spaces with extreme simplicity and according to their aesthetic preferences. The advantage of using Impertek’s pedestal also lies in the possibility to work with different materials: from WPC to porcelain stoneware, up to natural stone, even within the same project. Which are the new demands? As previously mentioned, among the new demands there is the need to create comfortable environments characterized by user-friendly products. This implies the search for versatile solutions capable of integrating technical aspects such as the positioning of wiring, structures, and lighting systems within aesthetically pleasing contexts. In the construction sector, attention to these technical aspects is crucial because, although not visible, they significantly contribute to improving the living comfort. Versatility also means identifying solutions characterized by the ease of change and replacement of 20

finishes. With the Impertek raised flooring system, nothing is glued, and everything can be removed. Without altering the underlying structure, it is indeed possible to change the finishes. Not only does this flexibility simplify the adaptation to the current trends, but it is also particularly advantageous installation-wise. Hotels, for instance, are environments where the combination of these two factors is crucial to meet the need for periodic design renewal, in a timely manner. Another consideration relates to the need for easy and timely repairs or maintenance. Thanks to raised floorings, it is possible to intervene with replacement when and where necessary, in a short time, without causing significant disruptions, even in the case of infiltrations. We can therefore summarise the new demands as the need to combine aesthetics and functionality, ensuring a comfortable and sustainable experience over time. How has the approach of the decking/cladding system in the building world over the years? In recent years, the concept of raised floors has evolved significantly to adapt to changes in the construction landscape. In the past, for instance, sales of pedestals were primarily oriented towards heights between 25mm and 35mm, optimal measurements for installation on existing floors or in situations where the space below the threshold was limited. Today, there has been a substantial shift in approach. The market appears to lean towards greater heights, ranging from 65mm to 125mm, as raised flooring is no longer considered solely a solution for laying on existing floors but has become a standard, included as a specification in the tenders of many pro.

MAPEI / www.mapei.com

THE ORBIT The Orbit is located 115 Via Kisias in Athens. After several years, Niko Drandakis, founder of the startup company BEAT, wanted to create ultramodern offices on this site for the heartquarters of his company. Today The Orbit houses on the fourth floor the offices for the 380 employees of BEAT and it has completely changed the look of the neighbourhood, becoming an “icon” of modern Athnes and creating a hub of innovation to attract talented people, including those who have left Greece in recent years. A Mapei system was chosen to install resilient (LVT and loose lay PVC) floors in the offices to guarantee not only strong, durable surfaces, but also compliancy with the high eco-sustainability standards specified for the project. The substrates were treated with synthetic resin-based PRIMER G in water dispersion with very low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) to improve adhesion of ULTRAPLAN ECO 20, a selflevelling mortar produced and distributed in Greece by Mapei Hellas, which was applied on the primed substrates. The resilient flooring was bonded with ULTRABOND ECO FIX adhesive and fixative with high residual tack, which is particularly suitable, as in this case, for installing loose-lay floorings. This product is an acrylic resin-based adhesive in water dispersion with very low emission lev- el of volatile organic compounds (EMICODE EC1Plus certified) which is easy to apply by trowel or with a roller. Once dry it remains tacky, which means flooring tiles can be easily removed and replaced at a later date. Furthermore, it may be used for floors exposed to heavy foot traffic and the passage of castor wheels, as specified in European standard EN 12529. 28

PAOLA

DI SILVESTRO Corporate Product Line Manager - Resilient, Mapei Group

How has the concept of living changed? When it comes to habitations, needs have changed and there are new approaches with regards to how we live spaces. The pandemic revolutionised the entire world’s approach to the concept of living, both inside and outside the home, and habits, places, work and relationships were turned on their heads. It is now commonly accepted that our homes have a direct effect not only on our moods, but also, and above all, on our health and wellbeing in general, which is why the main trends in interior design focus principally on how to make us feel more at ease from an emotional perspective. Which are the new demands? Floor and wall coverings and, above all, dedicated installation systems for these coverings, must be chosen to meet a multitude of needs. The main characteristics are resistance and hygiene. At the same time installation systems have to play a part in making surroundings comfortable, functional and suitable for these various needs. In addition, they need to be made in such a way that they reduce maintenance costs and environmental impact as much as possible. Resilient and textile materials, and also modern LVT and SPC and decorative fiberglass for walls, are often adopted and chosen by designers to create floor and wall coverings in various types of surroundings. For example, over the last few years, bathrooms have become increasingly important in terms of aesthetics and more attention has been paid in order for their practicality and functionality fiberglass for walls which enable a room to be decorated with colours and patterns customers most desire. Whether it is a flowery landscape, an oasis, a cloud-filled sky, a background featuring the world’s most iconic paintings or many other possibilities, it is clear there is no limit to aesthetics and our fantasy seems to know no bounds. Durability, in this case, is also synonymous with quality and eco-sustainability, so we need to pay special attention when choosing an installation system specifically developed for these fashionable coverings. Mapei also has extensive experience and expertise in this particular field and has a portfolio of specific installation systems 30

for these types of materials and is a reliable partner when designing and installing even the most complex applications. What changes have there been over the years in the approach to wall/floor covering systems in the world of construction? In the case of resilient and textile flooring materials there is more freedom in design, installation is quicker and they can be removed more quickly: nowadays there is an increasing trend to opt for modular and self-laying floors. With this – apparently – simple solution, however, installers are facing new challenges, especially with regards to choosing the right installation materials. We often talk about modularity for various reasons: firstly, from a design perspective. In fact, with single elements, it is easier to imitate the effect of different materials, to create different patterns and to be completely free when designing a floor. For example, you can concentrate on dividing a room into zones where people walk or not, or divide a floor into areas with different aesthetic effects within the confines of the same room. The possibility of combining different types of self-laying flooring (carpet tiles, self-laying LVT, SPC) is limitless. As the name already suggests, self-laying floor and wall coverings do not need to be fully bonded. Having said that, the term “self-laying” can also be a little misleading, because the material has to be fixed to the substrate in some way with an appropriate tackifier to prevent it from moving. As far as selflaying textile coverings are concerned, the trend is to use Velcro/ non-woven fabric backing and tiles which are thin and light. When choosing a bonding system, a tacker in this specific case, you have to make sure it does not adhere too firmly to the felt backing in the first case to prevent it being damaged when removed later, whereas, in the second case, it has to be strong enough to reduce and, if possible, limit curving or shrinkage in the material which would then create unsightly gaps between the various tiles. This is why, in such situations, you should rely on the hands of specialised, expert installers using reliable and specific installation materials.

PROGRESS PROFILES / www.progressprofiles.com

RESIDENCE HOTEL AMBIEZ Surrounded by the luxuriant landscape and the splendid Dolomites that frame Madonna di Campiglio (TN), the Residence Hotel Ambiez offers apartments in a metropolitan style, combining traditional architectural elements with a touch of modern design. It includes the Lares restaurant and a wellness area dedicated to relaxation. For the renovation of the panoramic swimming pool, the company relied on the professionalism of Progress Profiles and the quality of the Italian company’s products offered by Ceramiche Beseno SRL. The indoor swimming pool was suffering from waterproofing problems that were causing cracks to appear in the adjacent flooring and some of the tiles to come loose: it needed a complete overhaul so that it could once again become the place of choice for guests after an intense hike or a long ski trip. PROFOIL, a polyethylene membrane with a polypropylene fleece on both sides, was used to waterproof the entire pool. This membrane guarantees high adhesion and ensures perfect waterproofing in environments with high vapour tension, such as saunas and Turkish baths, but also in areas in permanent contact with pressurised water, such as swimming pools. PRODESO MEMBRANE, ideal for all types of flooring, has been chosen to protect the edges and prevent future cracks and fissures. In fact, this innovative, patented membrane allows for the uncoupling between the substrate and the tile, meeting this need and ensuring the release of vapour tensions even in the case of overlapping on cracked and not perfectly cured substrates. Prodeso Membrane also distributes the load or heat of any heating system evenly and allows the installer to work without interruption from the laying of the membrane to the laying of the floor. The floor was then laid over the entire surface using the PROLEVELING SYSTEM, the innovative and patented levelling system that guarantees a perfectly level floor. Consisting of just two elements, it is practical and easy to use, as it does not require the use of pliers or other tools. Available in different thicknesses, from 1 to 5 mm, it is differentiated according to the desired joints and combinations, making it easy to create an in-line or running installation. The system also includes a tie-rod which, when inserted into the threaded stem of the levelling base, allows the installer to adjust the pressure on the surface and precisely align the joint lines of the tiles, guaranteeing perfect fixing. At the end of the installation, a light push or kick in the direction of the joint removes the tie rod, which can be reused indefinitely and is unique for all heights and models. 32

DENNIS

BORDIN CEO

How has the concept of living changed? In particular, how have coatings/finishes changed? In recent years, the concept of living has changed significantly. In the past, the home was seen primarily as a functional place. Today, however, it is also a place to work, relax, socialise and express any style. Innovation and design, which have always been Progress Profiles’ main values, have adapted to this change, anticipating consumers’ needs. We provide in fact a wide range of products that, thanks to their versatility, can be adapted to any environment and any requirement. Our offer includes not only membranes and systems for the perfect installation of floor coverings, but also profiles that combine functionality and customisation: they are ideal for protecting any type of floor or covering, giving a special touch to any interior. Which are the new demands? People are searching for solutions that can give them durability without sacrificing elegance and personalisation. They want their homes to reflect their individual style and preferences, but to be functional at the same time. People are also increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their homes, so they are looking for coverings and finishes that are made from sustainable materials and are energy efficient. For example, we have redesigned our 34

PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 SYSTEM electrical system so that it is more efficient than ever before. It can also be powered by renewable energy sources, meeting the needs of consumers who are increasingly aware of the need to use resources responsibly. How has the approach of the decking/cladding system in the building world over the years? On the one hand, there has been a widespread adoption of the minimalist style, which has had an impact on the choice of materials and designs for floors and coverings. The preference for clean lines, neutral colours and plain surfaces has led to the use of different materials and formats than in the past. As a result, we can now see the widespread use of large size XXL tiles, which have reduced the number of visible joints, creating a more uniform and modern effect, while also reducing the amount of maintenance required. On the other hand, both professionals and consumers are now aware of the importance of a perfect installation, which is crucial to avoid structural problems in the long term, ensuring that surfaces are correctly levelled and installed to minimise cracks or defects. For this reason, our Progress Profiles Academy offers seminars and customised courses open to all professionals interested in the latest developments in the building industry.

PRODESO DRAIN 4 T

echnological advances, combined with the use of high quality materials, have led to the development of PRODESO® DRAIN 4, which is only 4 mm thick and surpasses the performance of its predecessors, offering significant advantages: installation is even easier and more accurate, and laying times are shortened. The new membrane also gives indoor floors an unprecedented lifespan, eliminating the need for costly maintenance over time. The model consists of a cyan-coloured sheet of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with 4 mm high square reliefs. A polypropylene spunbond is bonded to the underside of the sheet. This ensures that the membrane is bonded to the substrate. PRODESO® DRAIN 4 is the perfect solution even in the case of problematic substrates, such as wood, cracked screeds or overlaps, thanks to its uncoupling ability and high capacity for correct vapour drainage. In fact, the membrane neutralises the differential movements that can occur between the substrate and the floor covering, thus preventing damage to the tiles, and it does not bind the joints of the substrate, if any. The adhesive used to lay the flooring dries quickly and evenly thanks to the cavities created between the polypropylene drainage fabric and the polyethylene sheet: these promote micro-ventilation, drastically reducing the rise of triacetates present in the adhesives and the appearance of efflorescence in the joints. Finally, in the case of underfloor heating, this “air chamber” allows better heat distribution and a reduction in thermal inertia.

PRODESO HEAT GRIP 5 SYSTEM ®

D

riven by the constant search for innovation to anticipate the needs of installers and users, Progress Profiles has developed a new version of the PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 SYSTEM, the electrical heating system that combines functionality and design, with improved membrane geometry and performance. Ideal for floors and coverings, it is placed only where it is needed, eliminating the need for radiators, providing immediate comfort in selected areas and guaranteeing significant energy savings over time. The PRODESO® HEAT GRIP SYSTEM can also be powered by renewable energy sources, meeting the demands of consumers who are increasingly aware of the responsible use of resources. The PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 SYSTEM consists of the PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 MEMBRANE, the PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 CABLE, and the PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 THERMOSTAT KIT. The membrane’s geometry has been completely redesigned to improve its performance compared to the previous version: extremely thin, it combines a thickness of only 5.5 mm with uncoupling and waterproofing properties, allowing it to be installed on cracked supports or still in the hygrometric withdrawal phase. Easy and quick to install, it also has the advantage of reducing construction times, making it easier to carry out even the most complex renovations. The system is available in the PRODESO® HEAT GRIP 5 STICK self-adhesive version for perfect results on existing floors, plywood or metal. The latest generation cables are made up of resistances in parallel circuit that, if damaged, do not interrupt the entire system’s heat transmission. Finally, the high-tech digital thermostat connects directly to Android or Apple devices via WiFi, allowing the system to be switched on, off and adjusted remotely from a smartphone or tablet. 35

ANGELO

BAGNARI

Export Manager and Owner

How has the concept of living changed? In particular, how have coatings/finishes changed? We are in a phase of profound change, especially on a conceptual level. We are rethinking spaces and all that this entails, leaving aside more traditional ideas and notions, at least for the moment, in favour of a wider visual horizon. This is often obtained with the conception and design of open and multifunctional spaces, capable of welcoming inside them approaches that are parallel and complementary to one another, but also proposal that can carve out their own personal corner. Inclusivity also in design is becoming a more and more important element around which other concepts revolve, all to be considered as founding parts of a future still to be imagined to some extent, and for this reason even more stimulating. There is also to consider how in this phase the balance and harmony necessary between indoor spaces and outdoor spaces is gaining more and more importance. These spaces are considered not only as overlooking, but also farther from horizon. Perspective lines and surrounding landscape move together in a scenario of not-only-material connections. This way, wood becomes a bridge connecting nature to landscape architecture itself. It is a material that comes from nature and that creates and grants harmony to the surrounding environment through innovative proposals. And starting from these assumptions, the way of thinking cladding and finishings has changed too in a substantial way. The world moves fast, and today’s society needs quick and efficient replies. For this reason, many innovative materials are being introduced, such as composite wood, WPC – acronym for Wood Plastic Composite – but also elements like Exadeck, the ceramic decking distributed by Ravaioli that does not need maintenance nor fears wear. If you want to look at the environment, every new project cannot be separated from sustainability assessments, starting from a basis that concerns certified and eco-friendly materials, both in case of cladding and finishings. Which are the new demands? Let us go back to the already expressed ideas. Climate change forces us to assessments and precautions that cannot be further postponed. We must start from basic concepts and choice of materials. In cooperation with design studios and professionals of the sector, it is crucial to constantly take as inspiration the theme of the new 38

green deal, the green transition. This is useful to look for solutions to recover the landscape heritage, both urban and rural, until the inland areas. And all of this does not limit originality, it actually can stimulate it. This vision does not inhibit creativity and ensures coherence with a company journey based on a green concept. From the bamboo-based products, the natural renewable resource by excellence, to certificates on wood essences coming from plantations harvested sustainably. Because wood is the fruit of nature and it must be protected due to this, but at the same time can and must be the base for a sustainable development. In the case of Ravaioli Legnami, this is a reason to further boosting the studies already financed during the last years, with the purpose of giving a meaning and harmony to the products conceived for the newconcept buildings, and at the same time restore already present and integrated elements. How has the approach of the decking/cladding system in the building world over the years? Research and technological innovation run faster and faster and upgrades are more and more frequent, proposing every day new solutions based on development. Technology is moving forward very consistently also in our business and not only as far as the choice of decking and cladding materials is concerned, but also finishings, profiles and tools conceived for the design and the production of the structures themselves. One of the themes to consider the most is versatility, meant as the capability to adjust to new needs and situations, but also as possibility to offer purposes and different uses to a wider and wider and transversal public. And in order to meet increasingly varied tastes and ideas, the new techniques sure help us, by providing means and tools to customise even more every single product. Traditions are important and some notions that have always accompanied us will not be forsaken, but most likely they will be reconsidred and proposed in a new guise, more modern and actual. A proper reflection is to be dedicated to installation systems. In a business where originality is researched, it is fundamental to possess faster and faster operating methods, capable to adjust to the present needs. For this reason, Ravaioli invests in research and personnel training: quick and safe, mistake-proof methods. A more and more efficient answer to the requests, finding solutions and proposing feasible alternatives. These are goals that we pursue daily.

MARCO

CARRARO Export Manager

How has the concept of living changed? In particular, how have coatings/finishes changed? The concept of contemporary living increasingly revolves around the quest to tailor an environment to oneself, wherein the space itself becomes highly sought after and organized to reflect our style, with a greater emphasis on details and personalization. In prestigious projects, especially within heavily urbanized areas characterized by intense cementation, there is a growing demand for materials with GREEN BUILDING certifications, emphasizing a significant reduction in environmental/energy impact. A product like ours, directly derived from natural sources, aims to convey the idea of WOOD as an authentic and health-conscious element seamlessly integrated into an artificially created living environment. Which are the new demands? Requirements manifested in many ways and situations are the quality certifications to confirm a natural product built by hand, according to a correct supply chain and traceable to proper management also from an environmental point of view. This proves to have a product “better”, more attention to every aspect

42

of which be sure for the entire course of its use. Another obvious need is linked to having a product that can make unique the project in which it should be inserted: to us the continuous search for materials, colors, processes and forms that can guarantee such uniqueness and exclusivity. How has the approach of the decking/cladding system in the building world over the years? There was a natural evolution of the use of wood on the floor: from the PLANKS for the floors that had to act as GROUND for the raised floors, nailed in contrast to the beams and that had a structural task that kept the building tied, then move on to the solid wood floors profiled, more ordered and that no longer left holes between the floors, the first parchetti laid plug, strictly without joints, to get to planks and slats. Today the floor is no longer a structure, but it is the element that together with the furniture defines style and design of the environment. The parquet is an element of furniture and contributes to give personality to the living environment, creating custom settings that provide well-being.

THERMO-TREATED, WARM AND COMPLETELY NATURAL COLOR GRADATIONS W

e carefully choose natural raw materials to make our parquet, made to last. With a view to a respectful and sustainable production, we created the collection of thermo-treated: warm and completely natural color gradations that give rise to a 100% sustainable parquet, from forests managed responsibly and treated in the most environmentally friendly way possible, through the use of heat. It is this same heat that changes the shades of wood in an ecological way, without using additives or paints. In fact, by heating the boards at high temperatures (at 130 ºC, 157 ºC and 175 ºC), the wood takes on a beautiful and natural more or less dark colour, depending on the “roasting” temperature to which it has been subjected. The higher the temperature of the technical process, the darker the color tone will be assumed. The coloring involves all the thickness of the wood, in depth. In addition, the thermo-treated floor is more resistant to water and moisture. During the process, in fact, different physical and chemical properties of wood change permanently and, when excellently performed, the result of this technique is a matter in which the durability and stability are greatly increased.

Material perceptions and management of the light and colour choices come together in a project in which the floor of the sleeping area truly exalts the warmth of wood to give the sensation of genuinely feeling “at home”.

GIAN LUCA

VIALARDI CEO

How has the concept of living changed? In particular, how have coatings/finishes changed? Nowadays, both designers and private individuals are spending a considerable amount of attention on materials which are considered natural.Wood, which in effect has always enjoyed great prestige and a privileged position among the different materials used for living spaces, is today conquering new ground. It is increasingly found in bathroom environments for example, where it was once considered taboo, as well as being the subject of great attention in the hotel and hospitality sector. Which are the new demands? Today there is an ever-increasing pressure and demand to organize the spaces of our home in a more functional and sustainable way. We feel the desire to get closer to nature, the urge to look for solutions that make our homes comfortable and warm but at the same time light and airy. The spaces in which we live have

46

undeniably important effects on our well-being. As such, it is only natural that each of us demands healthy environments for ourselves and our family that are capable of transmitting those feelings of intimacy and welcome that wood is capable of giving, more than many other materials. How has the approach of the decking/cladding system in the building world over the years? Right from the initial design phases, the floor plays an important role. Design and function always need to be analyzed when choosing the flooring, in actual fact this latter can create uniformity or contrasts from an aesthetic point of view, and thus influence all the other aspects of an interior design project. Nowadays, this awareness is highly developed, so both in the construction and renovation phases, the choice of a floor, right down to its smallest details (types of wood, finishes and colours) is both a delicate and important step.
