THE BORTOLATO ANALOGICAL METHOD Who is Camillo Bortolato:

A pedagogist and teacher with over 40 years experience in primary schools. In addition to teaching, he has for many years been intensely involved in research on methodologies and teaching tools for mathematics. He is particularly interested in designing tools which make teaching easier and school less heavy going for teachers, pupils and parents.

The Analogical Method is:

• The Bortolato Analogical Method appeals to children’s intuition to transform learning into a joyful flight of discovery by focusing on the innate way they learn.

• From 2005 to today more than 1.000.000 children in Italy have used the Analogical Method and its materials.

Three main points: 1. It is effective right because it gets closer to children’s natural way of learning, in fact they learn before they go to school.

2. It is comprehension at a glance: no specific and previous

learning is required, but just a redescovery of the abilities that children have within themselves.

3. It facilitates didactics and the teacher’s work because it

doesn’t impose a didactics thought by adults but it relays, first of all, on the children’s innate and intuitive abilities, starting from mental calculation, which is natually congenial to them, and then it leads them towards written calculation and its logarithms.

COUNTING The secret to learning to count is not found in thinking about written numbers, but in concentrating only on their quantity • Counting by ten, by one hundred, or by one thousand is an objective that all children can reach because it is simply a verbal analogy game with the fi rst ten names of the numbers • The whole book must be completed in one sitting, fi rst with the adult reading the quantities and the child repeating them • The two instruments of 10 and 100 can be used to read the quantities and groups of ten “at a glance”—no calculation is necessary

The Line of 20 is the alternative to colored rods in primary school maths teaching. The method valorizes the intuitive skills of children and is a fun and easy method that can be used immediately.

If you open a box of coloured rods and look for the number 8, it is difficult to find it if you don’t know what colour it is and if you don’t line up the 1 as many times as necessary to count 8.

With The Line of 20 Pupils recognize the tool as a representation of their hands.

The analogy is immediate!

Why? Because you only have the cardinal dimension!

You immediately miss the ordinal number size, wich is the position of a number in relation to the other numbers.
