Tre sonate per violino e pianoforte (anteprima)

Edizioni Curci, in collaborazione con il CIDIM, Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica, è orgogliosa di presentare due volumi dedicati alla produzione strumentale di Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948), noto al grande pubblico per le sue opere liriche, con l’obiettivo di recuperare il valore estetico di un repertorio di pregio e singolare bellezza.

Il primo volume propone, in una nuova edizione con la diteggiatura di Davide Alogna (1980), le tre Sonate per violino op. 1, op. 10 e op. 27. Il secondo raccoglie gli inediti per pianoforte custoditi presso la Bayerische Staatsbibliothek di Monaco di Baviera e riscoperti da Costantino Catena (1969), pianista e raffinato interprete di questo repertorio, che ha curato entrambi i volumi.

Edizioni Curci, in collaboration with CIDIM (Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica), is proud to present two volumes dedicated to the instrumental production of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (18761948), known to the general public for his operas, with the aim of recovering the aesthetic merit of a valuable and uniquely beautiful repertoire.

The first volume, in a new edition with fingering by Davide Alogna (b. 1980), features the three Sonatas for violin (Op. 1, 10, and 27). The second one collects the unpublished piano pieces conserved at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich and rediscovered by Costantino Catena (b. 1969), pianist and expert interpreter of this repertoire, who edited both volumes.

PREFAZIONE

PREFACE

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) nasce a Venezia con il nome di Hermann Friedrich Wolf. Il padre August, pittore esperto nella riproduzione di quadri italiani antichi, si era innamorato della nobildonna veneziana Emilia Ferrari durante un viaggio di lavoro in Italia.

Fino all’età di sedici anni, il giovane Hermann rimane indeciso tra la carriera di musicista e quella di pittore, avendo talento per entrambe. Nel 1888 assiste al Barbiere di Siviglia di Gioachino Rossini e l’anno successivo compie un viaggio a Bayreuth, dove ha l’occasione di ascoltare le principali opere di Richard Wagner. Nel frattempo continua a dipingere: nel 1891 si iscrive all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma e, nel 1892, a quella di Monaco di Baviera, città natale del padre. È proprio qui, tuttavia, che la passione per la musica finisce per avere la meglio.

A differenza del fratello Teodoro, che diverrà pittore, Ermanno decide di sostenere l’esame di ammissione all’Accademia di Musica di Monaco, dove viene accettato nella classe del celebre contrappuntista Joseph Rheinberger.

In quegli anni ha anche l’occasione di studiare direzione d’orchestra con Ludwig Abel, che resta colpito dalla sua Serenata e la invia all’editore Steingräber, per i cui tipi viene pubblicata.

La rigorosa formazione contrappuntistica della scuola di Rheinberger, unendosi a una sensibilità melodica spiccatamente italiana, costituisce la sua personale cifra stilistica: così, in occasione di questa prima pubblicazione, decide di accostare al cognome tedesco quello italiano, rendendosi al contempo più riconoscibile – Wolf e Ferrari sono entrambi cognomi piuttosto diffusi.

Nel 1896, conclusi gli studi monacensi, ritorna in Italia, dove ha modo di conoscere Lorenzo Perosi, Arrigo Boito e Giuseppe Verdi. A Milano, nel 1897, il conte Lurani gli propone di dirigere una Società corale tedesca e, nello stesso periodo, assiste a una rappresentazione della Cenerentola di Rossini, decidendo di farne una sua versione.

Purtroppo, l’insuccesso della sua Cenerentola, in cartellone al Teatro La Fenice nel 1900, lo spinge a tornare a Monaco dove, al contrario, sia quest’ultima che la cantata La vita nova vengono accolte con grande entusiasmo.

Grazie ai successi ottenuti in Germania, nel 1903 gli viene offerto il posto di direttore del Conservatorio “Benedetto Marcello” di Venezia, che manterrà fino al 1909. In occasione di questa nomina Arrigo Boito, con una lettera del 17 gennaio 1903, lo introduce al presidente del Conservatorio con un giudizio che ne sintetizza molto bene la

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) was born in Venice as Hermann Friedrich Wolf. His father August, a painter skilled in reproducing old Italian paintings, had fallen in love with the Venetian noblewoman Emilia Ferrari during a business trip to Italy.

Until the age of sixteen, young Hermann remained undecided between a career as a musician or as a painter, having talent for both. In 1888 he attended Gioachino Rossini’s Barber of Seville, and the following year he made a trip to Bayreuth where he had the opportunity to hear the major works of Richard Wagner. Meanwhile, he continued to paint: in 1891 he enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, then in 1892 transferred to the art academy of Munich, his father’s hometown. It was there, however, that his passion for music ended up taking priority.

Unlike his brother Teodoro, who would become a painter, Ermanno decided to take the entrance exam to the Munich Academy of Music, where he was accepted into the class of the famous contrapuntist Joseph Rheinberger. During those years he also had the opportunity to study conducting with Ludwig Abel, who was impressed by his Serenata and sent it to Steingräber, who published it.

The rigorous contrapuntal training of the Rheinberger school combined with a distinctly Italian melodic sensibility became the young composer’s stylistic hallmark: thus, on the occasion of this first publication, he decided to pair his German surname with his maternal Italian one, which also served to make him more recognizable, inasmuch as Wolf and Ferrari are both rather common surnames.

In 1896, having completed his studies in Munich, he returned to Italy where he made the acquaintance of Lorenzo Perosi, Arrigo Boito, and Giuseppe Verdi. In Milan, in 1897, Count Lurani invited him to direct a German choral club, and around the same time he attended a performance of Rossini’s Cinderella and decided to do his own version of the story. Unfortunately, the failure of his Cinderella, staged at Venice’s Teatro La Fenice in 1900, prompted him to return to Munich where, on the contrary, both Cinderella and his cantata La vita nova were received with great enthusiasm.

Thanks to his successes in Germany, in 1903 he was offered the post of director of the Conservatorio “Benedetto Marcello” in Venice, which he held until 1909. On the occasion of this appointment Arrigo Boito, in a letter dated 17 January 1903, introduced him to the president of the conservatory with an evaluation that summarized his artistic personality very well: “Wolf-Ferrari is, to put it in inelegant but clear

personalità artistica: «Il Wolf-Ferrari è, per dirla con una formula inelegante ma chiara, un musicista nato. Cotesta sua natura così riccamente dotata per la musica, egli rese ancora più fertile con lo studio e col lavoro indefesso.

La sua cultura musicale è pari a quella d’ogni compiuto Maestro. Le sue tendenze artistiche sono come devono essere, marcatamente moderne, ma senza folli eccessi di modernità. La sua indole artistica è nobilmente impetuosa, appassionata e poetica»1.

Come operista si afferma in quegli anni (Le donne curiose, I quatro rusteghi) divenendo – insieme a Giacomo Puccini e Richard Strauss – l’autore più eseguito al mondo nei primi venti anni del secolo. Sarà soltanto la Prima guerra mondiale a fermare la sua attività compositiva: si rifugia a Zurigo, straziato dal conflitto tra le sue due patrie, e fino al 1922 non riesce a scrivere nulla. Gli anni tra le due guerre saranno ancora forieri di creatività e successi.

Torna a Venezia nel 1946, dove vive in povertà gli ultimi due anni della sua vita.

His musical culture is equal to that of any accomplished Maestro. His artistic tendencies are as they should be, markedly modern, but without the foolish excesses of modernity. His artistic nature is nobly impetuous, passionate, and poetic” 1.

He established himself in those years as a composer of opera (Le donne curiose, I quatro rusteghi), becoming – along with Giacomo Puccini and Richard Strauss – the most performed composer in the world for the first two decades of the century. It was only with World War I that he would interrupt his compositional activity: he took refuge in Zurich, torn by the conflict between his two homelands, and until 1922 he was unable to write anything. The years between the wars would still be full of creativity and success. He returned to Venice in 1946, where he lived the last two years of his life in poverty.

Lontano dalle avanguardie quanto dal verismo, Wolf-Ferrari ha sempre ricercato un ideale di bellezza atemporale, indipendente dai movimenti artistici del momento, e a questo scopo si è spesso ispirato alla grazia settecentesca.

Non era, tuttavia, un conservatore: piuttosto, intendeva rinunciare a qualsiasi astrattismo in favore di una naturalezza che riteneva perduta nei compositori suoi contemporanei. «Molti musicisti italiani d’oggi, finché cantavano per il bisogno di cantare, ispirati da quel che detta dentro, producevano autentiche opere d’arte, ora che arzigogolano troppo col cervello fanno matematica, se pure, ma non musica»2.

Il suo isolamento lo rende unico nel suo tempo, con un linguaggio molto personale e riconoscibile, ma proprio per questo motivo emarginato dalla scuola di Darmstadt, che sconfessò i compositori legati a un linguaggio tonale e “tradizionale”. Se le sue opere teatrali hanno continuato, ciò nonostante, a essere rappresentate, la sua musica strumentale è stata a lungo dimenticata. Solo negli ultimi anni sembra rinascere un interesse nei confronti di questo importante repertorio.

As far from the avant-garde as from Verismo, Wolf-Ferrari always strived for an ideal of timeless beauty, independent of the artistic movements of the day, and to this end he often drew inspiration from the grace of the 18th century. He was not, however, a conservative: rather, his intention was to renounce abstractionism in favor of a naturalness that he felt had been lost in the work of his contemporaries. “Many Italian musicians of today, as long as they sang out of the need to sing, inspired by what was dictated from within, produced authentic works of art; now they convolute everything with their brains; they do mathematics, if anything, but not music” 2 .

This isolation made him unique in his time, with a very personal and recognizable language, but for that very reason marginalized by the Darmstadt school, which disavowed composers bound to a tonal and “traditional” language.

While his operas nevertheless continued to be performed, his instrumental music had already been long forgotten. Only in recent years does there seem to be a resurgence of interest in this important repertoire.

La Sonata per violino e pianoforte in sol minore op. 1, composta al termine degli studi presso l’Accademia di Monaco (1895), è l’opera con cui il compositore dà avvio al catalogo. Le atmosfere schumanniane e brahmsiane si uniscono a un lirismo che contraddistinguerà tutta la musica di Wolf-Ferrari.

The Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor, Op. 1, composed at the end of his tenure at the Munich Academy (1895), is the work that opens the composer’s catalogue, where atmospheres evoking Schumann and Brahms are combined with a lyricism that will distinguish all of WolfFerrari’s music.

A un primo tempo di carattere impetuoso (Sostenuto, Allegro appassionato), nel quale i due strumenti dialogano serratamente in un ricco sviluppo tematico sempre pieno di tensione, segue un secondo tempo in forma di recitativo (Lento, senza tempo), modale, sospeso ed estatico, che sembra una preghiera. Il violino risponde alle atmosfere corali del pianoforte: nella sua liricità, unita a momenti solenni, lascia già intravedere alcune caratteristiche che saranno tipiche della sua musica. Nello scorrevole terzo tempo (Allegro ma non troppo e con spirito) i contrasti e le fratture evocano una teatralità anch’essa ricorrente nella produzione successiva.

The impetuous opening movement (Sostenuto, Allegro appassionato), in which the two instruments converse tightly in a rich thematic development full of tension, is followed by a second movement in recitative form (Lento, senza tempo), which is instead modal, suspended and ecstatic, reminiscent of a prayer. The violin responds to the piano’s choral suggestions: its lyricism, interspersed with solemn moments, already hints at certain characteristics that will become typical of his music. In the flowing third movement (Allegro ma non troppo e con spirito), the contrasts and fractures evoke a theatricality that recurs in his later production.

L’originalissima Sonata per violino e pianoforte in la minore op. 10, del 1901, è in soli due tempi. Risale al secondo periodo monacense, quando, dopo l’insuccesso veneziano della Cenerentola, Wolf-Ferrari fece ritorno nella città tedesca, ed è contemporanea alla cantata dantesca La vita nova op. 9, per soprano, baritono, coro, orchestra, organo e pianoforte. Come in quest’ultima, si respirano atmosfere severe, sinfoniche, austere, quasi religiose, in cui si sente l’eco di César Franck. L’influsso preponderante è quello di Richard Wagner, Max Reger e Richard Strauss.

Il primo tempo, Appassionato, è di scrittura insolitamente moderna per Wolf-Ferrari. Sembra voler sperimentare, qui, nuove soluzioni, cercare nuovi linguaggi, dirigersi oltre la scrittura tipicamente tardoromantica che contraddistingue la prima sonata, anche sfruttando virtuosisticamente gli strumenti.

Il secondo tempo (Recitativo. Adagio), pur mantenendo un carattere quasi sacro, raggiunge vette di grande lirismo. A un recitativo di sapore wagneriano segue un sostenuto molto cantabile, con il violino che inaugura una purissima melodia, coniugando ancora una volta il carattere tedesco con quello italiano. Il tranquillo finale conclude in modo sereno e calmo questa interessante e inquieta composizione, facendoci dimenticare le ardite sperimentazioni del primo tempo.

The highly original Sonata for Violin and Piano in A minor, Op. 10, from 1901, has only two movements. It dates from the second Munich period, when, after the Venetian flop of Cinderella, Wolf-Ferrari returned to the Bavarian city, and is contemporary with the Dantean cantata La vita nova, Op. 9, for soprano, baritone, choir, orchestra, organ, and piano. Both compositions share a severe, symphonic, austere, almost religious atmosphere in which echoes of César Franck can be heard. The preponderant influence, however, comes from Richard Wagner, Max Reger, and Richard Strauss.

The first movement, Appassionato, is unusually modern for Wolf-Ferrari. He seems to want to experiment here with new solutions, to explore new languages, to reach beyond the typically late-Romantic writing that distinguishes the first sonata, even pushing the instruments virtuosistically.

The second (Recitativo. Adagio) achieves heights of great lyricism while maintaining an almost sacred character. A recitative with a Wagnerian flavor is followed by a melodic sostenuto, with the violin ushering in a pure melody, again combining German and Italian influences. The quiet finale concludes this interesting and restless composition in a serene manner, almost making us forget the bold experiments of the first movement.

Più distante dalle prime due, sia temporalmente che musicalmente, appare la terza Sonata per violino e pianoforte in mi maggiore op. 27. Composta nel 1943, è in quattro tempi, molto legati dal punto di vista tematico, e ha un carattere meno appassionato, più disinvolto e frizzante rispetto alle sonate del primo periodo. A differenza di queste ultime, edite agli inizi del ’900 da Rahter (Amburgo), l’autore non fece in tempo a vederla pubblicata: solo tre settimane prima della sua morte si decise a inviare una lista di brani inediti, tra cui questa sonata, all’editore Sonzogno di Milano.

L’Allegro moderato è un tempo in cui si percepisce la predilezione di Wolf-Ferrari per il canto e per il teatro:

More distant from the first two, both chronologically and musically, is the third Sonata for Violin and Piano in E major, Op. 27. Composed in 1943, it is in four thematically linked movements and has a less passionate, more casual and sparkling attitude than the sonatas of the first period. Unlike the first two, published in the opening years of the century

by Rahter (Hamburg), the composer didn’t have time to see this one in print: just three weeks before his death, he sent a list of unpublished works, including the third sonata, to the Milanese publisher Sonzogno.

The Allegro moderato is a movement in which Wolf-Ferrari’s predilection for song and drama is readily apparent: pervaded by memorable melodies, it also offers many surprises in the

pervaso dalla cantabilità, rivela molte sorprese, come fugati o effetti orchestrali. Nel tenero Andantino con innocenza emergono chiaramente l’eleganza e la delicatezza del compositore, «un tardo nipote di Mozart e Cimarosa» (Giannotto Bastianelli), mentre il terzo movimento (Agitato), in tonalità minore, ha un carattere ancora una volta appassionato, come nelle sonate più giovanili.

L’ultimo movimento, Allegro molto con fuoco, utilizza lo stesso tema, variato, del primo (entrambi sono in formasonata), ed è anch’esso ricco di colpi di scena. Si alternano momenti energici e impetuosi, fugati, recitativi, passaggi di carattere più riflessivo. È come se Wolf-Ferrari volesse fare una sintesi di tutte le sue caratteristiche più tipiche: la passione, il lirismo, l’ironia, la tenerezza, il teatro.

Nonostante gli oltre quarant’anni che la separano dalle prime due, il linguaggio utilizzato dal compositore non è particolarmente innovativo; prevale l’eleganza, all’interno dei confini armonici del primo romanticismo.

In the tender Andantino con innocenza, the elegance and delicacy of the composer, “a late nephew of Mozart and Cimarosa” (Giannotto Bastianelli), clearly emerge, while the third movement (Agitato), in a minor key, returns to the passionate character of the more youthful sonatas. The last movement, Allegro molto con fuoco, uses the same theme, varying it like the first (both are in sonata form), and is also full of twists and turns, alternating energetic and impetuous moments with fugati, recitatives, and passages of a more reflective tone. It is as if Wolf-Ferrari wanted to distill all of his most distinctive traits: passion, lyricism, irony, tenderness, drama. Despite the more than forty years that separate it from the first two, the language used by the composer is not particularly innovative; elegance prevails, remaining within the harmonic boundaries of early Romanticism.
