Berlin’s light bulbs and phones/bags

S

e vi dovesse capitare di intraprendere uno di quei viaggi spaziali ora ‘aperti al pubblico’ e vi accadesse di sorvolare Berlino, notereste ancora le tracce della divisione della città seguita alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. L’Est, infatti, utilizza lampade a vapori di sodio che emettono luce arancione, mentre l’Ovest ne usa a vapori di mercurio che producono luce bianca. A più di 30 anni dalla caduta del Muro, la città mostra ancora segni di divisione attraverso l’illuminazione notturna. Suona come un avvertimento: certe ferite, anche quelle inferte in questi sciagurati ultimi anni, sfregiano gli umani molto a lungo. E poi arriva Honor, marchio di smartphone, che ti realizza un telefono (l’Honor V Purse, per i più curiosi) che è sì un micro computer, ma assomiglia anche molto a una piccola borsa gioiello.

In questo caso la realtà si fa svago e tutto si confonde in un cortocircuito fra tecnologia e moda. Ma cosa c’entra l’illuminazione di Berlino con un telefono/borsa? I loro paradossi indicano un percorso, lo stesso intrapreso da Rick Owens durante le ultime sfilate: va bene giocare con la moda, ottimo spingere su creatività e stile, a patto che non si dimentichi il contesto. Un panorama complesso in cui è possibile, o forse doveroso, lanciare messaggi, combattere battaglie, offrire speranze per un domani migliore.

If you happened to take one of those space trips now ‘open to the public’ and happened to fly over Berlin, you would still notice traces of the division of the city following World War II. The East, in fact, uses sodium-vapor lamps that emit orange light, while the West uses mercury-vapor ones that produce white light. More than 30 years after the fall of the Wall, the city still shows signs of division through its night lighting. It sounds like a warning: certain wounds, even those inflicted in these unfortunate last few years, scar humans for a very long time.

And then along comes Honor, a smartphone brand, which makes you a phone (the Honor V Purse, for the curious) that is yes a micro computer, but looks a lot like a small jewel bag. In this case, reality becomes entertainment, and everything gets mixed up in a shortcircuit between technology and fashion.

But what does Berlin lighting have to do with a phone/bag? Their paradoxes point to a path, the same one taken by Rick Owens during the last fashion shows: it’s okay to play with fashion, great to push on creativity and style, as long as you don’t forget the context. A complex landscape in which it is possible, or perhaps necessary, to launch messages, fight battles, offer hope for a better tomorrow.

All the colors of fashion Latest addition, Gucci’s Ancora Red. Because style increasingly comes through a custom palette. Exactly as it did in the past.

C

’era una volta il nero, il colore prediletto di quelli che la moda la facevano e la seguivano che, come una divisa, tracciava segni e disegni, stabilendo un confine da una parte e una certezza dall’altra. Una sorta di coperta di Linus dell’eleganza, che rifuggiva dagli strilli inutili e chiassosi di un certo milieu per porsi come un unicum al quale rifarsi. E omologarsi. Del resto, Baldassarre Castiglione era stato chiaro: nell’abbigliamento il nero è più piacevole di qualsiasi altro colore. Punto e a capo. Una lezione che, quasi cinque secoli dopo, Gabrielle Coco Chanel apprese alla perfezione, facendosi interprete dell’esigenza dell’epoca – un’eleganza per tutti, lo stile décontracté, una certa qual voglia di morigerata compostezza derivante dall’immediato dopoguerra, la necessità di indossare qualcosa di funzionale e non mortificante - e racchiudendola nella petite robe noire, il vestito femminile per antonomasia. Naturalmente nero. Inutile ricordare come gli altri couturier l’avessero imitata immediatamente alla stregua di un faro. In primis Christian Dior con il suo leggendario New Look ricco di modelli neri che potevano essere portati in qualsiasi momento della giornata e a ogni età. Del resto, il nero è un colore felice (Azedine Alaia dixit) ma, al netto dell’attrazione inesorabile e sempre crescente che è stato in grado di esercitare, non è rimasto il solo nella moda. Nel tempo, il suo coté democratico e sensuale è esploso, ha assunto significati differenti, spesso contradditori, facendosi sinonimo di mistero come di eleganza, di ricchezza e del suo esatto contrario (erano neri gli abiti del popolo che non mostravano la sporcizia), di passione come di castità - Marylin Monroe versus gli alti prelati, per intenderci. E ha lasciato spazio a un universo cromatico sfaccettato e dalla narrazione altrettanto avvincente, che ha saputo accompagnare l’evoluzione della moda riflettendola, appunto, nei suoi cromatismi. Ma la moda e le sue tinte non vivono nel vuoto: specchio della società che la crea, è essa stessa sottoposta a un divenire continuo e sfuggente. Questione di sfumature, appunto. E se ogni periodo storico ha avuto la sua tinta feticcio ed

è altresì vero che il colore che identifica l’oggi è una palette arcobaleno (al netto delle motivazioni simboliche), c’è un altro, ulteriore aspetto che ha preso piede in relazione alla questione cromatica, sempre presente ma in realtà mai così forte. Il fatto, cioè, che ogni (big) marchio di moda sia sempre più connotato da un colore. E non solo. Perché l’evoluzione immediatamente successiva a questa è stata la creazione di una sfumatura di colore personalizzata per ogni maison, un unicum in grado di caratterizzarne ulteriormente lo stile in termini di identità e soprattutto di esclusività, con buona pace delle presunte derive mainstream della moda. Ultimo, in ordine di tempo, è stato Sabato De Sarno. Il fresco direttore creativo di Gucci ha esordito sulla passerella di settembre con la sua collezione di debutto accompagnata dal suo primo colore, quel Rosso Ancora, una sorta di rosso cupo tendente al marrone con lampi bordeaux che è diventata presto la tinta di riferimento del brand dalla doppia G. La sua anima richiama tanto le pareti dell’ascensore del Savoy di Londra in cui Guccio Gucci lavorava e che gli diede l’idea di creare un brand di valigeria, quanto i molti pezzi d’archivio a cui De Sarno ha guardato come a un oracolo. Del resto, il designer è stato allievo per oltre quattordici anni di un altro rivoluzionario dei colori, ovvero Pier Paolo Piccioli che alla leggendaria cifra stilistica, ops, cromatica della maison, vale a dire il rosso Valentino, ha affiancato il Pink PP, quel rosa acceso che nella scorsa stagione, molto prima del Barbiecore, era davvero ovunque. Ma che i direttori creativi siano un po’ dei rabdomanti del colore è oramai un fatto assodato. Daniel Lee ha una vera e propria passione per la tavolozza: se da Bottega Veneta aveva imposto tra la classicità delle tinte comunemente accolte dalla maison il verde Bottega, oggi emblema del brand tanto quanto le sue borse intrecciate, appena arrivato da Burberry il creativo ha ridisegnato il check identitario del colosso inglese all’insegna del blu cobalto. Presente e passato, naturalmente. Del resto, non tutti sanno che il celebre arancione Hermès nacque da una necessità, quella cioè di sopperire alle scatole beige profilate di marron che, >

A matter of nuances, indeed.” fino al 1945, ne avevano definito l’eleganza ma che, introvabili a causa della guerra, furono sostituite dall’unico packaging disponibile, un arancione che nessuno voleva e che, da un giorno all’altro, si trasformò nella firma del brand. E poi c’è Tiffany, che ha fatto del color uova di pettirosso, irresistibile signature delle sue scatole, il suo simbolo da sempre. C’è Christian Louboutin che ha scritto la storia con le suole rosse delle sue scarpe. C’è Giorgio Armani con la poetica del suo greige che l’ha accompagnato fin dalle origini e che incarna perfettamente la sua filosofia no season…

E se questa digressione sui colori potrebbe sembrare un discorso rivolto esclusivamente agli addetti ai lavori, i fatti – e il quotidiano - dimostrano che non è così. Le tinte, esattamente come altri dettagli più o meno macroscopici, hanno il potere di definire un brand e possiedono un coefficiente di attrazione non indifferente che, nel corso del tempo, si è fatto man mano più strategico ed emotivamente impattante. Oltre al fatto, non trascurabile, che i colori permettono di contribuire in maniera efficace a far notare i brand sul mercato. E quale strategia migliore se non quella cromatica per farsi riconoscere… a colpo d’occhio? Non è un caso che la maggior parte degli acquisti sia determinata, in prima battuta, dal colore dell’oggetto più che dai suoi dettagli. Ed è evidente quanto la brand awareness tragga beneficio da un’identità amplificata dal rifarsi a un’unica nuance: esalta il suo DNA, colpisce il pubblico, crea quell’idea di coerenza di marca che attraversa il tempo e dona solidità…

Quale sarà la direzione - cromatica, of course! – del futuro? I pareri sono discordanti: sempre più esclusività di colore versus anarchia cromatica assoluta versus predilezione per le tinte naturali in linea con l’approccio sostenibile. Una cosa sola è certa, la libertà di essere quello che si vuole passa anche, e soprattutto, dalla sfumatura che le diamo. Che è squisitamente e totalmente nostra.

on the other. A sort of Linus blanket of elegance, which eschewed the useless and noisy shrieks of a certain milieu to pose as a unicum to which to refer. And to homologate to. After all, Baldassarre Castiglione had been clear: in clothing, black is more pleasing than any other color. Period. A lesson that, almost five centuries later, Gabrielle Coco Chanel learned to perfection, making herself the interpreter of the need of the time - an elegance for all, the décontracté style, a certain desire for morose composure arising from the immediate postwar period, the need to wear something functional and not mortifying - and encapsulating it in the petite robe noire, the women’s dress par excellence. Black, of course. Needless to mention how other couturiers had imitated her immediately in the manner of a beacon. First and foremost Christian Dior with his legendary New Look full of black models that could be worn at any time of day and at any age. After all, black is a happy color (Azedine Alaia dixit) but, net of the relentless and ever-growing attraction it has been able to exert, it has not remained the only one in fashion. Over time, its democratic and sensual coté has exploded, taken on different, often contradictory meanings, becoming synonymous with mystery as well as elegance, with wealth and its exact opposite (black were the clothes of the people that did not show dirt), with passion as well as chastity - Marylin Monroe versus high prelates, to be clear. And it left room for a multifaceted chromatic universe with an equally compelling narrative, which was able to accompany the evolution of fashion by reflecting it, precisely, in its chromatics. But fashion and its hues do not live in a vacuum: a mirror of the society that creates it, it is itself subject to a continuous and elusive becoming. A matter of nuances, indeed. And if every historical period has had its fetish hue and it is also true that the color that identifies today is a rainbow palette (net of symbolic motivations), there is another, further aspect that has taken hold in relation to the chromatic question, always present but in reality never so strong. That is, the fact that every (big) fashion brand is increasingly connoted by a color. And not only that. Because the evolution immediately following this has been the creation of

a custom color shade for each fashion house, a unicum capable of further characterizing its style in terms of identity and, above all, exclusivity, with good peace to the supposed mainstream drifts of fashion. Last, in order of time, was Sabato De Sarno. Gucci’s fresh creative director debuted on the September catwalk with his collection accompanied by his first color, that Rosso Ancora, a sort of dark red tending toward brown with flashes of burgundy that has quickly become the signature hue of the brand with the double G. Its soul recalls as much the elevator walls of London’s Savoy where Guccio Gucci used to work and which gave him the idea of creating a luggage brand, as it does the many archival pieces to which De Sarno has looked like an oracle. After all, the designer was a pupil for over fourteen years of another color revolutionary, namely Pier Paolo Piccioli, who to the maison’s legendary stylistic, oops, chromatic signature, namely Valentino red, has flanked the Pink PP, that bright pink that was really everywhere last season, long before Barbiecore. But that creative directors are a bit of color diviners is now an established fact. Daniel Lee has a real passion for the palette: if at Bottega Veneta he had imposed among the classicity of the hues commonly embraced by the maison the Bottega green, now as much an emblem of the brand as its woven bags, as soon as he arrived at Burberry the creative has redesigned the identity check of the British giant under the banner of cobalt blue. Present and past, of course. After all, not everyone knows that the famous Hermès orange was born out of a necessity, that is, to make up for the beige boxes profiled in marron that, until 1945, had defined its elegance but that, unavailable because of the war, were replaced by the only packaging available, an orange that no one wanted

and that, from one day to the next, became the brand’s signature.

And then there is Tiffany, which has made the robin’s egg color, the irresistible signature of its boxes, its symbol for as long as it can remember. There is Christian Louboutin who has written history with the red soles of his shoes. There is Giorgio Armani with the poetics of his greige that has accompanied him from the beginning and perfectly embodies his no-season philosophy....

And while this digression on colors might sound like a discourse aimed exclusively at insiders, the facts - and the daily newspaper - prove that this is not the case. Hues, just like other more or less macroscopic details, have the power to define a brand and possess a not inconsiderable coefficient of attraction that, over time, has gradually become more strategic and emotionally impactful. In addition to the not insignificant fact that colors make it possible to contribute effectively to getting brands noticed in the marketplace.

And what better strategy than color to get recognized - at a glance? It is no coincidence that most purchases are determined, in the first instance, by the color of the object rather than its details. And it is evident how much brand awareness benefits from an identity amplified by referring to a single shade: it enhances its DNA, strikes a chord with the audience, and creates that idea of brand consistency that spans time and gives solidity...

What will be the direction - chromatic, of course! - of the future?

Opinions are divided: more and more color exclusivity versus absolute color anarchy versus a preference for natural hues in line with the sustainable approach. Only one thing is certain, the freedom to be what one wants also, and above all, passes through the shade we give it. Which is exquisitely and totally our own.

An alternative bag, young and fresh

G

ava è il laboratorio creativo e di ricerca di Gavazzeni, brand italiano di borse e piccola pelletteria, autentico esempio di eccellenza e artigianalità. Il nuovo progetto creativo coniuga il know how della migliore tradizione Made in Italy con i valori e gli highlights del mercato europeo in ambito moda e design. Un approccio innovativo e un design future-proof scandito da una visione fluida, inclusiva ed etica. Un progetto che va oltre il puro e semplice prodotto puntando su una ricerca stilista che attinge dall’arte alla fotografia, includendo grafica e design. Elena Gavazzeni, titolare di secnoda generazione, insieme al fratello Pietro, di Dora, azienda bresciana specializzata in pelletteria, ci porta alla scoperta dei segreti del nuovo brand Gava.

Non si è ribellata al ‘destino di famiglia’ e ha abbracciato il mondo moda. Obbligo o passione?

“Da sempre sono affascinata dal mondo moda. Dopo l’ingresso nella azienda di famiglia mi sono dedicata inizialmente alla gestione di brand di Maisons e quindi al nostro marchio Gavazzeni e successivamente a Gava”.

Come mai un nuovo marchio oltre quello di famiglia e i brand per cui lavorate?

“Gava nasce dall’esigenza di creare un prodotto differente, un’alternativa giovane e fresca, nei colori, nei materiali e nelle forme, con l’intento di intercettare una fetta di mercato differente. Abbiamo presentato Gava per la prima volta a settembre 2023, durante la Milano Fashion Week. La Vitto bag è il modello iconico del brand, proposta prima nelle misure XS, S e M, e poi sviluppata in nuovi formati per la stagione invernale e per la SS24. Una pillow-bag timeless e no-season, in morbidissima nappa liscia o matelassé.

Nelle varianti estive si trova anche in denim”.

Se dovesse affrontare una crisi creativa, dove si rifugerebbe per superarla?

“Il nostro ufficio stile è il mio porto sicuro. Una stanza piena di immagini, ritagli.

Qualsiasi cosa mi ispiri - un paesaggio o un oggetto di design che trovo particolarmente interessante - viene attaccato sul nostro moodboard. A primo impatto sembra regnare il caos, ma per me rimane un luogo in cui ovunque poso lo sguardo trovo uno spunto creativo.”

Come sta cambiando la moda (se sta cambiando)?

“La moda non cambia, si evolve e ritorna. La tendenza che noi riteniamo di aver interpretato è il ‘quite luxury’ dove la forma e la preziosità della pelle sono protagonisti e non necessitano di un logo gridato”.

Quali sono gli stilisti del passato o contemporanei che le piacciono?

“Potrei sembrare banale, ma per me Coco Chanel è riuscita a stravolgere i costumi, liberando le donne dai corsetti e accorciando abiti e gonne. Al giorno d’oggi creative e imprenditrici come Miuccia Prada o Maria Grazia Chiuri continuano lo stesso processo di ‘denuncia’, sono portavoce di un messaggio, pur rimanendo esempi di eleganza e raffinatezza”.

Dove possiamo trovare le creazioni firmate Gava?

“Gava è un progetto appena nato che trova spazio nelle boutiques di alto livello.

L’Italia rappresenta ovviamente il nostro mercato di riferimento, a cui fanno seguito Giappone e America, che al momento sono i mercati in cui siamo riusciti a posizionarci, grazie anche ai nostri showroom di Tokyo e New York”. >

We presented Gava for the first time in September 2023, during Milan Fashion Week. The Vitto bag is the iconic model of the brand, first proposed in XS, S and M sizes, and then developed in new sizes for the winter season and for SS24. A timeless and no-season pillow-bag, in very soft smooth or matelassé nappa leather. In the summer variants it can also be found in denim.”

Quanto conta la sostenibilità per il marchio?

“Per le nostre borse usiamo pellami conciati da fornitori molto selezionati. E stiamo molto attenti a ridurre al minimo l’impatto ambientale: ad esempio, riutilizziamo i ritagli di pelle scartati dalla produzione per realizzare altri piccoli accessori; oppure, per la scelta del packaging, puntiamo su soluzioni che possano essere riutilizzate”.

Come si configura la collezione SS2024? “È un tripudio di colori. Ci siamo ispirati alla Miami tropical degli anni ’50. Pensate ai raffinati e colorati edifici in Art Déco: tanto fucsia e rosa, con richiami ai flamingos, ma anche l’azzurro e il verde di acque cristalline. È da quell’immaginario che abbiamo attinto e, ovviamente, abbiamo proposto colori vitaminici che profumano d’estate e che fanno sognare mete esotiche e giornate pigre trascorse in pieno relax. Abbiamo anche introdotto un nuovo modello, si chiama VIKI. È la prima borsa firmata Gava con una struttura rigida, realizzata in pelle martellata, con una lavorazione check a rombi data da cuciture finissime ton sur ton. Gava è un accessorio originale e sicuramente divertente, ma quando penso a una borsa non posso non pensare alla praticità. Quindi, non mancano le tracolle in catena o nappa”.

Gava is the creative and research laboratory of Gavazzeni, an Italian brand of bags and small leather goods, an authentic example of excellence and craftsmanship. The new creative project combines the know-how of the best Made in Italy tradition with the values and highlights of the European market in fashion and design.

An innovative approach and future-proof design marked by a fluid, inclusive and ethical vision.

A project that goes beyond the pure and simple product by focusing on stylist research that draws from art to photography, including graphics and design. Elena Gavazzeni, second generation owner, with her brother Pietro, of Dora, a Brescia-based company specializing in leather goods, takes us on a journey to discover the secrets of the new Gava brand.

She did not rebel against ‘family destiny’ and embraced the fashion world. Obligation or passion?

“I have always been fascinated by the fashion world. After joining the family business I initially dedicated myself to managing Maisons brands and then to our Gavazzeni brand and later to Gava.”

Why a new brand besides the family brand and the brands you work for?

“Gava was born from the need to create a different product, a young and fresh alternative, in colors, materials and shapes, with the intention of intercepting a different slice of the market.

If you were facing a creative crisis, where would you take refuge to overcome it?

“Our style office is my safe haven. A room full of images, clippings.

Whatever inspires me - a landscape or a design object that I find particularly interesting - is attached to our moodboard. At first glance chaos seems to reign, but for me it remains a place where everywhere I lay my eyes, I find a creative cue.”

How is fashion changing (if it is changing)?

“Fashion does not change, it evolves and returns. The trend that we believe we have interpreted is ‘quite luxury’ where the form and preciousness of leather are protagonists and do not need a shouted logo.”

Which past or contemporary designers do you like?

“I might sound trite, but for me Coco Chanel succeeded in upending costumes, freeing women from corsets and shortening dresses and skirts. Nowadays, creative and entrepreneurial women like Miuccia Prada or Maria Grazia Chiuri continue the same process of ‘denunciation’, they are spokespersons for a message, while remaining examples of elegance and refinement.”

Where can we find Gava’s signature creations?

“Gava is a newly born project that finds space in high-end boutiques. Italy is obviously our target market, followed by Japan and America, which are currently the markets where we have managed to position ourselves, thanks also to our showrooms in Tokyo and New York.”

How important is sustainability for the brand?

“We use tanned leathers from very selected suppliers for our bags.

And we are very careful to minimize our environmental impact: for example, we reuse leather scraps discarded from production to make other small accessories; or, when choosing packaging, we focus on solutions that can be reused.”

What does the SS2024 collection look like?

“It is a riot of colors. We were inspired by the tropical Miami of the 1950s. Think of the refined and colorful Art Deco buildings: lots of fuchsia and pink, with references to flamingos, but also the blue and green of crystal-clear waters. It is from that imagery that we drew and, of course, we proposed vitamin colors that smell of summer and make you dream of exotic destinations and lazy days spent relaxing. We also introduced a new model, it’s called VIKI. It is the first bag signed Gava with a rigid structure, made of hammered leather, with a diamond check processing given by very fine ton sur ton stitching. Gava is an original and fun accessory, but when I think of a bag, I can’t help but think of practicality. So, there is no shortage of chain or tassel straps.”

Gucci’s marketing conundrum: a double-edged sword?

iete fra quelli che pensano che il marketing sia la più grande invenzione del Novecento o giocate nella squadra di chi lo ritiene pericoloso per le nostre menti e la nostra libertà di scelta?

Un dibattito quasi atavico che l’ultima sfilata di Gucci ci permette di esplorare. Partiamo da qui: a volte bisogna ricordare che il marketing può essere un asso nella manica, ma anche una carta matta che rischia di farci perdere la mano… soprattutto in un settore come la moda. Può rendere un brand desiderabile, può favorire il successo di uno stile estetico in cui i clienti si riconoscono (vedi il caso Jaquemus e Djerf Avenue), ma può anche sviare l’attenzione dagli ideali che il marchio desidera promuovere.

In alcuni casi genera aspettative troppo alte, come accaduto in occasione del lancio della nuova linea di Gucci, presentata a settembre 2023. Come tutti sanno, l’amato e odiato Alessandro Michele ha ‘lasciato’ le redini della direzione creativa della maison lo scorso autunno, probabilmente perché la casa madre, Kering, voleva assestare uno scossone all’albero dei ricavi, ormai stabili dai tempi della pandemia. Il compito (indegno?) della bacchettatura (il metodo con cui si scuote un ulivo per la raccolta dei frutti) è stato affidato a Sabato De Sarno, ex braccio destro di Pierpaolo Piccioli da Valentino. Una figura fino a ora poco esposta alla luce dei riflettori. D’altronde Gucci, in passato, aveva già scommesso, per ben due volte, su degli “sconosciuti” per rilanciarsi (Tom Ford e Alessandro Michele non erano di certo designer rinomati prima di dirigere il brand): non c’è due senza tre!

Ma lasciamo da parte le strategie di Gucci e torniamo a focalizzarci su ciò che ha preceduto la presentazione della prima collezione firmata De Sarno: la GUCCI ANCORA. Innanzitutto, è stata rimossa qualunque traccia del Gucci degli ultimi anni dalle pagine social e dal sito del brand, per poi promuovere i contenuti con un rosso borgogna, eletto emblema della nuova estetica della firma.

Una mossa intrigante: è un paio di mesi che le sfumature di que-

sto pantone spopolano online e vengono indicate come il colore dell’autunno; peccato che la collezione appena presentata (in cui questa tinta è onnipresente) sia il ready-to-wear della primavera 2024. Forse è stato un azzardo cavalcare un trend che potrebbe scomparire nell’arco di pochi mesi! Nonostante il rischio, la nostra tonalità è stata protagonista indiscussa dell’enorme campagna di marketing Gucci around the world: una serie di cartelloni con la scritta “Gucci ancora” in campo rosso, installati in grandi metropoli internazionali (tra cui Bangkok, Napoli, Tokyo e Londra…), accompagnati a un omaggio speciale alla città di Milano, dove anche un tram è stato coinvolto nella campagna pubblicitaria.

Ma non è finita, la parte più incredibile della frenetica attività promozionale ha riguardato l’influencer marketing: le più note pagine social del mondo della moda, ad esempio hautelemode, hanno inserito la nuova colorazione nella loro foto profilo per tutto il giorno della sfilata; e, per concludere, innumerevoli celebrity hanno assistito allo show indossando dettagli o accessori rosso borgogna. Il nome forse più eclatante è quello di Kendall Jenner.

Come è facile dedurre, l’hype per l’evento del 22 settembre scorso ha raggiunto livelli inauditi; se ne è parlato ancora di più quando è stato annunciato il cambio di location, dalle pittoresche strade di Brera al quartier generale della maison in Via Mecenate, a causa del mal tempo.

Eppure, la sfilata non ha fatto altrettanto scalpore: ovviamente la raffinatezza e la qualità delle creazioni di Gucci non ha deluso, ma i capi in sé non hanno soddisfatto le aspettative generate dal brand nelle settimane precedenti. Anzi, la critica ha osservato una certa somiglianza con le altre case di moda in cui De Sarno ha lavorato, vedi Prada e Valentino. In effetti, le canottiere bianche sono tipiche del primo e i miniabiti con brillantini sono un grande classico di Piccioli. Nell’insieme è possibile affermare che questa collezione si inserisce perfettamente nel recente filone del quiet luxury, come De Sarno stesso aveva anticipato descrivendo il concetto della sfilata: >

“È una storia fatta di film, della mia amata Italia, di intellettuali e di viaggi in giro per il mondo, ma è anche sentirsi a casa ovunque si vada”. Gucci sembra averci deluso o, forse, ha soltanto elevato troppo le nostre aspettative. La ridondante (e rischiosa) campagna di marketing ha reso il soddisfarle praticamente impossibile. Sorge un dubbio: e se il reale obbiettivo dell’operazione non fosse stato l’acclamazione della critica, ma un picco di vendite?

Non resta che attendere i numeri dei prossimi mesi per risolvere il quesito. Certo è che questa sfilata, dalla grande vestibilità, ha tutte le carte in regola per generare un buon ritorno economico! Forse, come avrebbe detto Oscar Wilde, a Kering non importa che se ne parli bene o male, l’importante è che se ne parli!

Are you among those who think marketing is the greatest invention of the twentieth century, or do you play on the team of those who consider it dangerous to our minds and freedom of choice?

An almost atavistic debate that Gucci’s latest fashion show allows us to explore. Let’s start here: sometimes we need to be reminded that marketing can be an ace up our sleeve, but it can also be a crazy card that threatens to make us lose our hand, especially in an industry like fashion. It can make a brand desirable, it can promote the success of an aesthetic style with which customers recognize themselves (see the Jaquemus and Djerf Avenue cases), but it can also deflect attention away from the ideals the brand wishes to promote.

In some cases, it generates expectations that are too high, as happened at the launch of Gucci’s new line, unveiled in September 2023. As everyone knows, the beloved and hated Alessandro Michele ‘left’ the reins of the creative direction of the fashion house last fall, probably because the parent company, Kering, wanted to shake up the revenue tree, now stable since the pandemic. The (unworthy?) chopstick task (the method by which an olive tree is shaken to harvest fruit) was entrusted to Sabato De Sarno, Pierpaolo Piccioli’s former right-hand man at Valentino’s. A figure little exposed to the spotlight until now. After all, Gucci, in the past, had already bet, twice, on “unknowns” to relaunch itself (Tom Ford and Alessandro Michele were certainly not renowned designers before running the brand): there is no two without three!

But let us leave Gucci’s strategies aside and return to focus on what preceded the presentation of De Sarno’s first signature collection: the GUCCI ANCORA.

An intriguing move: it has been a couple of months that shades of this pantone have been depopulating online and being referred to as the color of fall; too bad that the collection just presented (in which this hue is ubiquitous) is the ready-to-wear for

spring 2024. Perhaps it was a gamble to ride a trend that could disappear in a matter of months! Despite the risk, our hue was the undisputed protagonist of Gucci’s huge marketing campaign around the world: a series of billboards with the words “Gucci again” in a red field, installed in major international metropolises (including Bangkok, Naples, Tokyo, and London...), accompanied by a special tribute to the city of Milan, where even a streetcar was involved in the advertising campaign.

But that’s not all, the most incredible part of the frenetic promotional activity involved influencer marketing: the most well-known social pages in the fashion world, for example hautelemode, included the new coloring in their profile photos throughout the day of the fashion show; and, to top it off, countless celebrities attended the show wearing burgundy-red details or accessories. Perhaps the most striking name is that of Kendall Jenner.

As is easy to deduce, the hype for the September 22 event reached unheard-of levels; it was even more talked about when it was announced that the location had been changed, from the picturesque streets of Brera to the maison’s headquarters on Via Mecenate, due to bad weather.

Yet, the fashion show did not cause as much of a stir: obviously, the sophistication and quality of Gucci’s creations did not disap-

point, but the garments themselves did not meet the expectations generated by the brand in the preceding weeks. Indeed, critics noted a certain similarity to other fashion houses where De Sarno has worked, see Prada and Valentino. Indeed, the white tank tops are typical of the former and the glittery mini-dresses are a great Piccioli classic. Overall, it is possible to say that this collection fits perfectly into the recent quiet luxury trend, as De Sarno himself anticipated when describing the concept of the fashion show: “It is a story made of movies, of my beloved Italy, of intellectuals and travels around the world, but it is also about feeling at home wherever you go.”

Gucci seems to have disappointed us or, perhaps, just raised our expectations too high. The redundant (and risky) marketing campaign has made meeting them virtually impossible. A question arises: what if the real goal of the operation was not critical acclaim, but a spike in sales? We only have to wait for the numbers in the coming months to resolve the question. What is certain is that this great-fitting parade has all the makings of a good ROI! Perhaps, as Oscar Wilde would have said, Kering doesn’t care whether it is talked about well or badly, the important thing is that it is talked about!

Fabio Rusconi Bishop of Made in Italy

l brand Fabio Rusconi nasce nel 1998 a Firenze sull’esperienza maturata nel settore calzaturiero dall’imprenditore, fondatore e CEO di cui il brand porta il nome. Il progetto ha origine di rientro da un viaggio in Giappone, meta cara a Fabio Rusconi e luogo nel quale l’imprenditore coglie l’importanza del Made in Italy nel paese del Sol Levante e nel mondo.

Si definirebbe più creativo o più imprenditore?

“Non certo creativo. Ho saputo interpretare ed anticipare gusti e desideri dei clienti. Sono un imprenditore curioso e un avido viaggiatore, che esplora i mercati allo scopo di conoscerne cultura e bisogni, che poi traduco in calzature che piacciano a livello globale senza tradire l’identità italiana del marchio”.

Dopo le esperienze con Gilda, Classe Unica e 1921, quali concetti ha voluto tenere centrali per il marchio Fabio Rusconi?

“Voglio che il brand sia un alfiere del Made in Italy e promotore di uno stile contemporaneo, sofisticato e caratterizzato dalla meticolosa cura nella scelta di materiali e dettagli.

Infatti, la produzione Fabio Rusconi è interamente Made in Italy, con la sola eccezione per le scarpe in pelle intrecciata - prodotto iconico del Brand - la cui tomaia viene realizzata in India, patria dell’intreccio di eccellente qualità”.

Anche per i materiali guardate all’Italia?

“L’approvvigionamento di pelle e materie prime, tra le quali nappe, camosci, vernici, metallizzati e vitelli, avviene interamente in Italia presso alcune selezionate concerie altamente specializzate e capaci di garantire prodotti di qualità”.

A chi si rivolgono le calzature Fabio Rusconi?

“Interpretano i desideri delle donne contemporanee, cosmopolite

e indipendenti. Il pellame e la manifattura italiani e la ricerca di uno stile minimale, sobrio e contemporaneo, rappresentano i capisaldi del Brand, che pone le necessità delle donne al centro della propria indagine stilistica”.

Qualche numero che presenti il marchio?

“Sceglierei questi: 190 mila paia prodotte nel 2022 distribuite in 400 negozi in 40 Paesi”.

Parliamo di distribuzione, quindi…

Fabio Rusconi ha una vocazione principalmente wholesale con una distribuzione capillare in diverse regioni del mondo. Il Giappone rappresenta il mercato d’elezione, responsabile del 50% del fatturato complessivo.

Nel resto del mondo i paesi di riferimento sono Italia, Germania, Russia, Ucraina, Francia, Belgio, Olanda e Svizzera con particolare presenza e successo nelle aree dell’Europa centrale e settentrionale. Apprezzate in Israele, negli U.S.A. il brand si avvale di una rete di clienti storici che hanno sposato il progetto fin dagli esordi. Il canale e-commerce del brand, unica forma di distribuzione diretta, rappresenta il 10% del fatturato”.

Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare per la primavera estate 2024?

“Soffici nappe, vernice e suede, declinati in tonalità accese come il turchese e il fucsia, o neutre come il cammello e il ghiaccio, caratterizzano contemporanee silhouette in grado di elevare anche gli outfit più classici.

Cavalchiamo il trend dell’iconica Mary Jane, proposta in versione flat, kitten heel o con tacco largo. Presentiamo anche nuove varianti delle silhouette ultra femminili con tomaia in rete: ballet flat e seducenti tacchi stiletto, destinate a diventare veri e propri oggetti del desiderio”. >

The Fabio Rusconi brand was born in 1998 in Florence on the experience gained in the footwear industry by the entrepreneur, founder and CEO whose name the brand bears.

The project originated on his return from a trip to Japan, a destination dear to Fabio Rusconi and a place where the entrepreneur grasps the importance of Made in Italy in the Land of the Rising Sun and around the world.

Would you call yourself more creative or more entrepreneur?

“Certainly not creative. I have been able to interpret and anticipate customers’ tastes and desires.

I am a curious entrepreneur and an avid traveler, exploring markets in order to get to know their culture and needs, which I then translate into footwear that appeals globally without betraying the Italian identity of the brand.”

After your experiences with Gilda, Classe Unica and 1921, what concepts did you want to keep central to the Fabio Rusconi brand?

“I want the brand to be a bishop of Made in Italy and promoter of a contemporary, sophisticated style characterized by meticulous care in the choice of materials and details.

In fact, Fabio Rusconi’s production is entirely Made in Italy, with the unique exception of woven leather shoes - the Brand’s iconic product - whose uppers are made in India, the home of excellent quality weaving.”

Do you also look to Italy for materials?

“The sourcing of leather and raw materials, including nappa leather, suede, patent leather, metallic and calfskin, takes place entirely in Italy at a few select tanneries that are highly specialized and able to guarantee quality products.”

To whom does Fabio Rusconi footwear appeal?

“They interpret the desires of contemporary, cosmopolitan and independent women. Italian leather and manufacturing and the search for a minimal, sober and contemporary style represent the cornerstones of the Brand, which places women’s needs at the center of its stylistic investigation.”

Any numbers that present the brand?

“I would choose these: 190 thousand pairs produced in 2022 distributed in 400 stores in 40 countries.”

So, let’s talk about distribution…

“Fabio Rusconi has a mainly wholesale vocation with widespread distribution in different regions of the world. Japan is the market of choice, responsible for 50 percent of total sales. In the rest of the world the countries of reference are Italy, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, France, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland with particular presence and success in the areas of Central and Northern Europe.

Appreciated in Israel, in the U.S. the brand relies on a network of long-standing customers who have espoused the project since its inception. The brand’s e-commerce channel, the only form of direct distribution, accounts for 10 percent of sales.”

What should we expect for spring summer 2024?

“Soft tassels, patent leather and suede, declined in bright shades like turquoise and fuchsia, or neutrals like camel and ice, characterize contemporary silhouettes capable of elevating even the most classic outfits. We ride the trend of the iconic Mary Jane, proposed in flat, kitten heel or wide heel versions. We also present new variants of ultra-feminine silhouettes with mesh uppers: ballet flats and seductive stiletto heels, destined to become real objects of desire.”

Mi piace la moda quando riesce a esprimere l’individualità e la creatività di ciascuno. Voglio che le mie immagini mostrino alle persone che possono divertirsi con la moda e raccontare il proprio stile personale, qualunque esso sia. Sono costantemente ispirato dalla diversità delle persone e dai loro stili unici. Il mio processo creativo inizia con l’idea per un look che si trasforma, poi, in una raccolta di pezzi tratti dal mio guardaroba. Così metto insieme il mio stile, a cui amo aggiungere accessori unici, per completare la storia. Sono nato a Da Lat, in Vietnam, e attualmente lavoro come art director in un’agenzia pubblicitaria internazionale. Mi appassiona usare la mia creatività per ispirare gli altri e realizzare qualcosa di veramente bello.

a una fontana sgorga acqua, a simboleggiare il fluire di una speranza che trafigge la rigidità fredda della pietra, di un presente sfregiato da guerre e violenza. Lo stesso desiderio di positività che Rick Owens trasmette con la sua collezione al femminile per la SS2024, mentre le sue creazioni sfiorano la fontana del Palais de Tokyo.

Owens sembra fare politica, quella profonda, che non tralascia ciò che accade nella storia, ne mima le ferite con volontà minimalista, e lo trasforma con il desiderio di speranza sussurato da colori e forme che si annodano e gonfiano nel vento. La severità del colonnato e degli sguardi delle modelle ricordano il rigore delle scenografie di Dune, ma la verticalità di tagli e figure rimanda alla trascendenza di un mantra, che in sottofondo si ripete: “I still believe in love”. È di Rick Owens la sfilata più significativa e sorprendente.

Water gushes from a fountain, symbolizing the flow of a hope that pierces the cold rigidity of stone, of a present scarred by war and violence. The same desire for positivity that Rick Owens conveys with his women’s collection for SS2024, as his creations skim the fountain at the Palais de Tokyo. Owens seems to be doing politics, the deep kind that does not leave out what is happening in history, mimics its wounds with minimalist will, and transforms it with the desire for hope whispered by colors and shapes that knot and swell in the wind.

The severity of the colonnade and the models’ gazes recall the rigor of Dune’s sets, but the verticality of cuts and figures hints at the transcendence of a mantra, which in the background repeats: “I still believe in love”. Nel 2020, Tamaris ha introdotto la collezione GreenStep con l’obiettivo di offrire modelli di scarpe senza tempo realizzati con materiali a base biologica e caratteristiche innovative di sostenibilità. Il noto marchio outdoor e la B Corp italiana esperta in progettazione e produzione di prodotti sostenibili si uniscono per dare vita a ACBC x Garmont, la capsule collection green che coniuga elementi outdoor e urban. La LAGOM, proposta in versione Low e Mid, sia per uomo che donna, è 100% vegan e a ridotto impatto di CO2. Conferma l’impegno di entrambe le realtà nel creare una calzatura in materiali responsabili, di derivazione naturale o riciclati, pensata per un utilizzo quotidiano. Il tessuto principale della tomaia è il RePET, ricavato dal riutilizzo delle bottiglie di plastica a fine vita.

L’intersuola in BioEVA, invece, ha al suo interno materiale biobased derivante dalla canna da zucchero, mentre il battistrada Garmont GTF EMERALD è in ReRUBBER, derivata dagli scarti di lavorazione della gomma.

Crosa – Milano, nuovo marchio indipendente Made in Italy, presenta The Leaf Bag, la nuova collezione di borse dalla parte della natura. Le nuove Leaf Bag di Crosa sono realizzate in Piñatex, materiale derivato dalle foglie di ananas che vengono tagliate, scartate o bruciate durante la raccolta del frutto. Grazie a un apposito procedimento, le foglie eliminate vengono raccolte, spolpate meccanicamente e la fibra viene mescolata a PU Bio Based per ottenere un materiale resistente. Tutti i componenti degli accessori (manico e anelli) sono in legno certificato appartenente alla tipologia meno a rischio, il faggio. Grande attenzione alla natura anche nelle parti strutturali nascoste della borsa che sono in sughero, cartone pressato riciclato, colla naturale e cere naturali. Il packaging è in tessuto e carta riciclata e certificata.

Una nuova collaborazione con le designer Sari Räthel e Ricarda Wolf di Berlino per PB0110. Le due si sono incontrate a Londra, sono diventate buone amiche e hanno fondato il loro marchio RÄTHEL & WOLF nel 2017. Creano gioielli e oggetti di lusso ispirati al corpo. Progettati e prodotti in Germania, i valori fondamentali di RÄTHEL & WOLF si concentrano sull’ambiente e sulla responsabilità sociale. L’argento è riciclato e le gemme sono ritagli industriali di alta qualità. La nuova pochette PB0110 fa incontrare i mondi della pelletteria e della gioielleria. Il manico in metallo liscio e lucido diventa un bracciale, mentre la forma curva della pelle permette alla mano di riposare nello spazio negativo o di abbracciare il corpo come una borsa cross-body. La pelle utilizzata provenie da una conceria tedesca, prodotta in modo neutrale dal punto di vista delle emissioni di CO2, mentre gli elementi metallici sono in ottone puro e rivestiti di palladio, realizzati in Italia.

Crosa - Milano, a new independent Made in Italy brand, presents The Leaf Bag, a new collection of bags on the side of nature. Crosa’s new Leaf Bags are made from Piñatex, a material derived from pineapple leaves that are cut, discarded or burned during the harvesting of the fruit. Using a special process, the discarded leaves are harvested, mechanically stripped, and the fiber is mixed with PU Bio Based to make a durable material. All accessory components (handle and rings) are made of certified wood belonging to the least endangered type, beech. Great attention is also paid to nature in the hidden structural parts of the bag, which are made of cork, recycled pressed cardboard, natural glue and natural waxes.

The packaging is made of fabric and certified recycled paper.

A new collaboration with designers Sari Räthel and Ricarda Wolf from Berlin for PB0110. The two met in London, became good friends and founded their label RÄTHEL & WOLF in 2017. They create luxurious jewellery and objects inspired by the body. Designing and manufacturing in Germany, RÄTHEL & WOLF’s core values focus on the environment and social responsibility. The silver is recycled and the gemstones are high-quality industrial off-cuts. The new PB0110 clutch combines the worlds of leather goods and jewellery. The smooth, polished metal handle becomes a bracelet, while the curved shape of the leather lets the hand rest in negative space or hugs the body as a cross-body bag. They used a cow leather from a German tannery that is produced in a CO2 neutral way while the metal elements are made of pure brass and coated with palladium, manufactured in Italy.

Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags celebra le sue 100 edizioni

Celebrare significa “ricordare, illustrare o esaltare fatti o personaggi”. Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags non desidera celebrare la sua 100esima edizione con la sola finalità di guardare al passato e decantare il presente. Lo fa con l’intento di ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile questa esperienza di successo (istituzioni, associazioni di categoria, espositori, compratori), ma soprattutto per imparare da quanto è già stato e migliorare ulteriormente la propria manifestazione, così da prepararla alle sfide del futuro.

La 100esima edizione è l’occasione perfetta per ‘tirare le somme’ di un evento partito con 12 espositori e che oggi conta più di 1300 operatori del settore. Che ospita i principali produttori di calzature di volume (e non solo) i quali mettono in mostra il loro saper fare a servizio dei brand internazionali. Una manifestazione nata come vetrina e divenuta, nel tempo, un vero e proprio motore per l’intero comparto calzature e, oggi, anche accessori. Un evento capace di stimolare il mercato grazie ai suoi appuntamenti che, per 8 giorni l’anno, divengono il centro degli scambi della calzatura e dell’accessorio di volume, e negli anni recenti anche di prodotti a più alto valore aggiunto. Se è vero come è vero che il mondo viene a Riva del Garda, ci viene non per curiosità, ma per fare il business delle calzature, per informarsi sui trend e per approfondire le principali tematiche del settore.

LO SGUARDO SUL FUTURO

Cosa accadrà nelle prossime edizioni del 2024 e quali sono le iniziative che hanno permesso alla manifestazione rivana di tagliare un tale traguardo.

Allora la domanda è quasi d’obbligo: come si fa a resistere per 100 edizioni ai cambiamenti del mercato?

La risposta non è semplice, ma è chiara: prendendosi cura prima di tutto dei compratori, assicurando una varietà dell’offerta ben studiata, un’esperienza d’acquisto che risponde alle loro esigenze e offrendo servizi ad ampio spettro. Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags vuole rimanere la piattaforma preferenziale per l’incontro fra domande e offerta, ma vuole anche fornire strumenti evoluti per affrontare il business. Citiamo solo alcune iniziative che dall’esperienza del passato guardano con coraggio e decisione al futuro: - L’Innovation Retail Village che a ogni edizione presenta al mondo della distribuzione servizi innovativi su cui può investire per rinnovare il proprio business e porre le basi per il successo di domani.

- L’Incoming Program, un programma specifico pensato per essere di supporto ai buyer che per la prima volta vogliono visitare l’evento. Un’iniziativa che si avvale di una capillare rete di delegati presente in oltre 60 Paesi e quindi vicina ai mercati di riferimento.

Che conosce profondamente le esigenze della distribuzione locale.

- L’analisi dei Trend. Proprio in occasione delle 100esima edizione, per la prima volta, a Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags si parlerà di tendenze. Un’area dedicata, chiamata Highlights, e sviluppata in collaborazione con la casa editrice e la scuola Arsutoria. Metterà in evidenza una selezione di borse e accessori degli espositori (a partire da giugno anche calzature) per fornire indicazioni concrete riguardo i trend di consumo più attuali ed organizzati in quattro macro temi: uomo, donna, unisex e business. Uno spazio in cui verranno ospitati anche speech di approfondimento sempre a tema tendenze e consumi.

LE CELEBRAZIONI Ma torniamo alle celebrazioni. Il compleanno di Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags verrà festeggiato durante entrambe le edizioni del 2024, con l’intenzione di coinvolgere tutta la comunità che ruota attorno alla fiera, anche coloro che non partecipano a entrambe le edizioni per questioni di stagionalità.

Tra i principali eventi in programma evidenziamo: - La Conferenza Stampa che i vertici di Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags terranno il 6 dicembre a Roma, presso il Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy, alla presenza di giornalisti di testate internazionali e delle istituzioni del Governo Italiano.

- L’Inaugurazione della manifestazione che avverrà il 13 gennaio 2024 alla presenza di importanti istituzioni nazionali e locali della politica e del settore.

- La Celebration Night del 14 gennaio 2024. Una vera festa che verrà celebrata insieme a tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags partecipando a molte delle cento edizioni.

- La presentazione di un cortometraggio e di una mostra fotografica in cui si ripercorreranno le 5 decadi di storia della manifestazione.

- La realizzazione di una monografia, che verrà presentata per l’edizione di giugno del salone, con testimonianze, protagonisti ed esperienze di queste 100 edizioni, che vuole offrire un'immersione

nella storia unica di Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags.

- Vari allestimenti in città per omaggiare la location e che due volte l’anno accoglie la community della calzatura e degli accessori.

Ecco che appare evidente quanto sia imperdibile l’edizione numero 100 di Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags, che si terrà dal 13 al 16 gennaio 2024.

The 100th edition is the perfect opportunity to 'take stock' of an event that started with 12 exhibitors and now has more than 1,300 industry players. Which hosts the leading manufacturers of volume footwear (and not only) who showcase their know-how in the service of international brands.

An event that began as a showcase and has become, over time, a real driving force for the entire footwear and, today, accessories sector. An event capable of stimulating the market thanks to its appointments that, for 8 days a year, become the center of exchanges of volume footwear and accessories, and in recent years also of products with higher added value.

If it is as true as it is that the world comes to Riva del Garda, it comes there not out of curiosity, but to do the footwear business, to learn about trends, and to delve into the main themes of the industry.

THE LOOK INTO THE FUTURE Then the question almost begs to be asked: how do you resist for 100 editions the changes in the market?

The answer is not simple, but it is clear: by taking care of buyers first, ensuring a variety of well-thought-out offerings, a shopping experience that meets their needs, and offering wide-ranging services.

Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags wants to remain the preferred platform for matching supply and demand, but it also wants to provide evolved tools to address business. We mention only a few initiatives that from the experience of the past look boldly and decisively to the future: - The Innovation Retail Village, which at each edition presents the retail world with innovative services in which it can invest to renew its business and lay the foundations for tomorrow's success.

- The digitization of the Fair Catalog, which is now interactive and can help operators filter the offerings at the fair to organize visits and identify the best partners with respect to what they are looking for, and to move around the fair thanks to the interactive map.

- Comprehensive assistance with practical travel and accommodation arrangements thanks to On The Go, the travel agency dedicated to trade show operators.

- The Incoming Program, a specific program designed to be of support to buyers who want to visit the event for the first time. An initiative that makes use of an extensive network of delegates present in more than 60 countries and therefore close to the target markets. Which deeply knows the needs of local distribution.

- Trend analysis. Precisely on the occasion of the 100th edition, for the first time, trends will be discussed at Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags. A dedicated area, called Highlights, and developed in collaboration with publishing house and school Arsutoria.

It will highlight a selection of exhibitors' bags and accessories (starting in June also footwear) to provide concrete indications regarding the most current consumer trends and organized into four macro themes: men's, women's, unisex and business. A space where in-depth speeches will also be hosted, always on the theme of trends and consumption.

THE CELEBRATIONS But back to the celebrations. The birthday of Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags will be celebrated during both editions in 2024, with the intention of involving the entire community that revolves around the fair, even those who do not attend both editions due to seasonality issues.

Among the main events planned we highlight: - The Press Conference that the top management of Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags will hold on December 6 in Rome, at the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, in the presence of journalists from international press and Italian government institutions.

- The Inauguration of the event that will take place on January 13, 2024 in the presence of important national and local institutions from politics and the industry.

- The Celebration Night on January 14, 2024. A true gala that will be celebrated together with all those who have made Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags possible by participating in many of the 100 editions.

- The presentation of a short film and a photographic exhibition tracing the five decades of the event's history.

Nella seconda settimana di novembre 2023, Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags è stata presente, in quanto partner, al 7° World Footwear Congress a Istanbul, in Turchia. Around the World continua con altri appuntamenti importanti.

Sempre a novembre 2023, la fiera sarà presente in Brasile per fare visita alle aziende e ai grandi produttori brasiliani e per partecipare agli eventi locali di settore. Agli inizi del 2024 si sposterà nei distretti industriali della Cina per poi continuare con un Road Show nel Nord Europa rivolto in particolar modo ai buyers.

econdo una recente indagine condotta da Workday Inc., fornitore leader di applicazioni cloud aziendali per la gestione finanziaria e le risorse umane, Il 48% dei dirigenti d’azienda in Italia accoglie con favore le opportunità offerte dall’Intelligenza Artificiale e dal Machine Learning, rispetto al 50% in America e al 46% nell’area APJ. Inoltre, il 44% delle aziende dell’area EMEA ha apportato delle modifiche affinché le loro attività siano sufficientemente agili da consentire la riallocazione delle risorse in modo rapido e su scala.

Dopo l’introduzione del Regolamento generale sulla protezione dei dati, l’UE sta proponendo un nuovo quadro giuridico per l’Intelligenza Artificiale: l’EU AI Act. L’obiettivo è di rafforzare la governance sulla qualità dei dati, la trasparenza e l’attività di supervisione svolta dall’uomo, incoraggiando una maggiore fiducia nella tecnologia.

L’entusiasmo per AI e ML tra i dirigenti d’azienda dell’area EMEA, sostenuto dai progressi normativi, sta contribuendo ad aumentare la propensione agli investimenti. Le aziende del Nord Europa sono in testa agli investimenti in queste tecnologie, mentre quelle dell’Europa meridionale hanno un approccio più conservativo.

Ad ostacolare maggiormente l’adozione dell’AI sono la gestione dei dati e l'eccessiva burocrazia: il 60% delle aziende di area EMEA afferma che i propri dati sono isolati, il che rende arduo l’accesso a informazioni che possano essere utilizzate in tempo reale. Inoltre, solo il 22% delle aziende ha compiuto progressi consistenti nell’eliminazione di alcuni passaggi burocratici che rallentano il processo decisionale. La conferma della fiducia delle imprese italiane nell’AI viene anche da una seconda ricerca dal titolo "AI e Chat GPT: Percezione e trend di utilizzo nelle aziende B2B", realizzata da BVA Doxa, che ha indagato in particolare l'utilizzo delle chatbot basate su modelli come Chat GPT all'interno delle aziende B2B. Alcuni dati interessanti emersi mostrano come, nel 2022, il 37% delle aziende ha implementato l’uso di chatbot, mentre il 47% ha adottato altre soluzioni basate sull'IA. Questi numeri testimoniano il rapido progresso nell'integrazione dell'IA nell'ambiente aziendale, con investimenti in crescita del 5% annuale. Quasi il 75% delle aziende intervistate crede che Chat GPT avrà un impatto significativo e positivo sul loro lavoro e sull'ambiente aziendale nel prossimo futuro.

Intelligenza Artificiale: opportunità o minaccia?

Sono positivo per natura e quindi, a mio parere, l’AI è sicuramente una grande opportunità, purché nelle mani giuste. In particolare, ritengo che un AI in grado di apprendere e rielaborare ci permetterà di far esplodere esponenzialmente le nostre capacità, ci trasformerà in

qualcosa di simile ai ‘superuomini’. Per fare un esempio pratico: se sono un executive manager quotidianamente assillato da una serie di attività ripetitive e meccaniche, trarrò grande beneficio dall’AI in termini di risparmio di tempo, la utilizzerò per velocizzazione questo tipo di mansioni. Il tempo risparmiato potrò impiegarlo per sviluppare nuove soluzioni e migliori strategie, per un lavoro qualitativamente più importante. Credo che l’AI ci permetterà di creare una sorta di ‘avatar’ di noi stessi, che ci conosce e sarà in grado di interpretare, mettere a terra e realizzare velocemente e in modo efficace i nostri pensieri.

Quali ripercussioni potrebbe avere sul mondo della moda?

Nell’ambito fashion potrebbe voler dire ‘tradurre’ su carta o su computer un’idea creativa in modo accurato e veloce. Se fossi un creativo potrei trarre vantaggio da una macchina intelligente che trasforma il mio pensiero in immagine in modo veloce ed efficace e che soprattutto - lavorando con me - impara a pensare come me, diventando una sorta di estensione di me stesso più efficiente. In breve tempo, l’AI diventerà la mia migliore assistente, al pari se non meglio del collega che mi consce da oltre 30 anni. Saprà esattamente cosa desidero e come risolve i miei problemi. Questo è quello che, secondo me, diventerà l’AI per CEO e creativi. Il designer accumulerà esperienze e le tradurrà nella sua creatività. L'executive accumulerà esperienze e le tradurrà in una sintesi di processo. Non penso che queste figure professionali verranno sostituite dall’AI, piuttosto useranno l’AI per accelerare la traduzione del pensiero in azione.

Che cosa pensa avverrà, o sta già avvenendo, invece, nell’ambito della distribuzione?

Il punto centrale è che l’AI capisce al meglio il cliente per due ragioni.

La prima è banale ma cruciale: tutte le conoscenze accumulate nel corso degli anni dall’assistente alla vendita nel suo rapporto personale con il cliente sono legate alla persona stessa e, quindi, quando questa lascia il posto di lavoro, le porta via con sé. Le informazioni e gli insight accumulati nel tempo dall’AI resteranno sempre in azienda. Si tratta di un know-how immagazzinato che, già di per sé, fa la differenza, ancor prima di valutare le importanti capacità analitiche dell’Intelligenza Artificiale. La seconda ragione è che l’AI elabora le informazioni del passato con intelligenza. Quindi, per esempio, se un cliente compra un paio di mocassini, l’AI non gli propone di acquistare nuovamente dei mocassini, magari di un altro colore, ma in base ai suoi gusti e alla stagione, gli sottopone altri tipi di calzature in colori diversi. L’AI riesce a mettere in campo ragionamenti che fino a oggi solo l'essere umano era in grado di elaborare. Si pensi anche alla logistica e ai benefeci che trarrà da un’AI capace di analizzare i dati del passato combinandoli con le previsioni di ciò che avverrà in futuro basandosi su trend attuali e sul mutare delle abitudini, ad esempio considerando il fatto che oggi le persone si recano meno spesso in ufficio rispetto al passato.

L’AI sembra una tecnologia alla portata di tutti in questo momento. Quali sono, però, nella realtà concreta, le difficoltà di

implementarla nei processi aziendali?

Sempre più in futuro, la differenza non la farà la parte quantitativa, ma la parte qualitativa. Non sarà la grande azienda, con i grandi budget, a fare la differenza, ma le persone che vi lavorano all’interno. L’AI è una tecnologia accessibile, perché tutti noi possiamo scaricarci l'app di Chat GPT, o qualsiasi altra applicazione, e coglierne il potenziale.

La difficoltà emerge quando bisogna integrare l'innovazione nell'infrastruttura esistente. La vera sfida aziendale, oggi, è da una parte la scelta del personale, che deve essere in grado di recepire un nuovo modo di ragionare e operare, e dall'altra parte strutturarsi in modo agile e flessibile per predisporsi al cambiamento. Ecco, allora, che in questo nuovo contesto le PMI italiane risultano avvantaggiate perché più veloci ed elastiche delle grandi strutture, anche se queste ultime hanno budget importanti.

Quali vantaggi può apportare l’AI alla customizzazione del prodotto?

Fino a due o tre anni fa si parlava molto di big data, fondamentali per creare un prodotto on demand. Il problema è che, oltre a dover raccogliere una grande quantità di dati, è necessario analizzarli per sfruttarne le opportunità. L’AI può essere la bacchetta magica che risolve entrambe le problematiche. Facciamo un esempio: quando devo mettere a punto un prodotto on demand, il primo passo è la creazione di una versione virtuale in 3D. Fino a ieri, per fare una scarpa in 3D ci voleva tempo e un team preparato, poi si è passati ad un piccolo studio fotografico, o anche ad una semplice box dove mettere una scarpa e riprodurla. Con l’AI si fa un passo ulteriore in avanti: non mi serve né lo studio, né la scarpa, né il personale, perché la tecnologia mi realizza una riproduzione in 3D della scarpa in base alle mie indicazioni. Non solo: può essere il cliente stesso a creare direttamente il prodotto che desidera. L’iper-customizzazione, inoltre, consentirebbe di individuare dei trend di consumo basati su reali dati aggregati, utili per offrire al mercato prodotti che realmente il consumatore desidera e che ancora non esistono.

Un altro tema di grande rilevanza in questi anni è la sostenibilità.

Avete esperienze di interazione tra AI e sostenibilità?

Già di per sé l'iper-customizzazione sarebbe un esempio di consumo sostenibile, così come l’efficienza logistica di cui abbiamo già parlato. L’AI, inoltre, permette una miglior analisi dei resi al fine di ridurli.

Il reso, infatti, è un elemento che produce un forte impatto sui costi nell’acquisto online e che incide negativamente sull’ambiente, a causa del doppio trasporto del prodotto stesso. Con la creazione di un prodotto ‘su misura’ è più difficile che si incappi in un reso e relativi costi per le finanze e l’ambiente.

C’è una case history o una startup che in questo momento sta sfruttando in modo stupefacente l'intelligenza artificiale e che ha colpito la sua attenzione?

Sì, si tratta di una scale-up della Silicon Valley che si chiama Ikasi e che lavora sull’iper-customizzazione delle attività di engagement e di loyalty dei clienti. È una delle realtà più interessanti che stiamo >

studiando. Nel punto vendita, ad esempio, nel momento in cui compri un prodotto, questa start-up usa l’AI per attivare un processo di cross-selling che ti propone prodotti correlati e veramente coerenti con il tuo acquisto (per semplificare, se vai a comprare le fragole, ti propone l'aceto balsamico). Sembra un aspetto banale, ma questa tecnologia opera a partire dalla realtà vera e concreta del consumatore con ricadute positive sul carrello e-commerce, così come sullo scontrino medio del punto vendita fisico.

Innovation Retail Village a Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags 2024 Anche a gennaio 2024 si rinnova l’appuntamento con l’Innovation Retail Village, il progetto realizzato dalla fiera di Riva del Garda, in collaborazione con Retail Hub e con il coordinamento scientifico di Alberto Mattiello - membro del Comitato Scientifico di Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags, dedicato alle startup e alle giovani imprese selezionate più innovative nel retail calzaturiero e pellettiero. Un’occasione preziosa per espositori e visitatori per trovare riunite in uno stesso spazio, e conoscere in anteprima, le innovazioni più rilevanti per il settore retail dell’accessorio, ma anche per le aziende emergenti coinvolte nel progetto, che trovano nell’Innovation Retail Village un importante trampolino di lancio sul mercato globale.

Artificial Intelligence: 'a great opportunity, in the right hands' Today we are talking more and more about Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, amid great expectations and some concerns. We talk to Massimo Volpe, Co-Founder of Retail Hub and curator of the 'Innovation Village Retail' project at Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags.

According to a recent survey conducted by Workday Inc., a leading provider of enterprise cloud applications for financial management and human resources, 48% of business executives in Italy welcome the opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, compared to 50% in America and 46% in the APJ area. Furthermore, 44% of companies in EMEA have made changes to make their businesses agile enough to reallocate resources quickly and at scale. After the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation, the EU is proposing a new legal framework for Artificial Intelli-

gence: the EU AI Act. The aim is to strengthen governance over data quality, transparency and human oversight, encouraging greater trust in the technology. Enthusiasm for AI and ML among EMEA business leaders, supported by regulatory advances, is helping to increase investment appetite. Companies in Northern Europe are leading the way in investing in these technologies, while those in Southern Europe are taking a more conservative approach. The main obstacles to AI adoption are data management and excessive bureaucracy: 60 per cent of EMEA companies say their data is isolated, making it difficult to access actionable information in real time. Furthermore, only 22% of companies have made consistent progress in eliminating certain bureaucratic steps that slow down the decision-making process.

Confirmation of Italian companies' trust in AI also comes from a second research study entitled 'AI and Chat GPT: Perception and Usage Trends in B2B Companies', carried out by BVA Doxa, which specifically investigated the use of chatbots based on models such as Chat GPT within B2B companies. Some interesting data emerged showing that, by 2022, 37% of companies have implemented the use of chatbots, while 47% have adopted other AI-based solutions.

These numbers testify to the rapid progress in integrating AI into the corporate environment, with investments growing by 5% annually.

Almost 75 per cent of companies surveyed believe that Chat GPT will have a significant and positive impact on their work and business environment in the near future. We spoke about Artificial Intelligence with Massimo Volpe, Co-Founder Retail Hub, and curator of the 'Innovation Village Retail' project at Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags.

Artificial Intelligence: opportunity or threat?

I am positive by nature and therefore, in my opinion, AI is definitely a great opportunity, provided it is in the right hands. In particular, I believe that an AI capable of learning and processing will allow us to exponentially explode our capabilities, it will transform us into something akin to 'superhumans'. To give a practical example: if I am an executive manager who is daily harassed by a series of repetitive and mechanical tasks, I will benefit greatly from AI in terms of saving time, I will use it to speed up these kinds of tasks. The time saved I will be able to use it to develop new solutions and better strategies, for qualitatively more important work. I believe that AI will allow us to create a kind of 'avatar' of ourselves, who knows us and will be able to interpret, ground and implement our thoughts quickly and effectively.

What repercussions could this have on the fashion world?

In the fashion world it could mean 'translating' a creative idea onto paper or computer accurately and quickly. If I were a creative person, I could benefit from an intelligent machine that turns my thought into an image quickly and effectively and that above all - working with me - learns to think like me, becoming a kind of more efficient extension of myself. In a short time, the AI will become my best assistant, on par with if not better than the colleague who has been advising me for over 30 years. It will know exactly what I want and how to solve my problems. This is what I think AI will become for CEOs and crea-

tive people. The designer will accumulate experiences and translate them into his creativity. The executive will accumulate experiences and translate them into process synthesis. I don't think these professionals will be replaced by AI, rather they will use AI to accelerate the translation of thought into action.

What do you think will happen, or is already happening, in distribution instead?

The central point is that AI understands the customer best for two reasons. The first is trivial but crucial: all the knowledge accumulated over the years by the sales assistant in his personal relationship with the customer is linked to the person himself and, therefore, when he leaves the workplace, he takes it with him. The information and insights accumulated over time by the AI will always remain with the company. This is stored know-how that, in itself, makes a difference, even before evaluating the important analytical capabilities of AI. The second reason is that AI processes past information intelligently. So, for example, if a customer buys a pair of moccasins, the AI does not propose to him to buy moccasins again, perhaps in a different colour, but based on his taste and the season, it presents him with other types of footwear in different colours. AI is able to bring into play reasoning that until now only humans were able to process. Think also of logistics and the benefits it will gain from an AI capable of analysing data from the past and combining it with predictions of what will happen in the future based on current trends and changing habits, for instance considering the fact that people nowadays go to the office less often than in the past.

AI seems to be a technology within everyone's reach at the moment. What, however, are the difficulties of implementing it in business processes in concrete reality?

More and more in the future, it is not the quantitative part that will make the difference, but the qualitative part. It will not be the big company, with the big budgets, that will make the difference, but the people working within it. AI is an accessible technology, because we can all download the Chat GPT app, or any other app, and grasp its potential. The difficulty arises when you have to integrate the innovation into the existing infrastructure. The real business challenge today is, on the one hand, the choice of personnel, who must be able to take on board a new way of thinking and operating, and on the other hand, structure themselves in an agile and flexible way to prepare for change. So, in this new context, Italian SMEs have an advantage because they are faster and more flexible than large structures, even if the latter have large budgets.

What advantages can AI bring to product customisation?

Up until two or three years ago, there was a lot of talk about big data, which is crucial for creating an on-demand product. The problem is that, in addition to having to collect a large amount of data, it is necessary to analyse it in order to exploit the opportunities. AI can be the magic wand that solves both problems. Let's take an example: when I have to develop a product on demand, the first step is to

create a virtual 3D version. Until yesterday, to make a 3D shoe took time and a trained team, then it went to a small photo studio, or even a simple box where you put a shoe and reproduce it. With AI we go one step further: I don't need the studio, the shoe or the staff, because the technology makes a 3D reproduction of the shoe according to my specifications. Not only that: it can be the customer himself who directly creates the product he wants. Hyper-customisation, moreover, would make it possible to identify consumption trends based on real aggregate data, useful for offering the market products that the consumer really wants and that do not yet exist.

Another topic of great relevance in recent years is sustainability. Do you have experiences of the interaction between AI and sustainability?

Hyper-customisation in itself would be an example of sustainable consumption, as would the logistical efficiency we have already discussed. AI also allows a better analysis of returns in order to reduce them. Returns, in fact, are a cost-intensive element in online shopping and negatively affect the environment due to the double transport of the product itself. With the creation of a 'tailor-made' product, it is more difficult to run into a return and related costs for finances and the environment.

Is there a case history or a start-up that is making amazing use of artificial intelligence right now and that has caught your attention?

Yes, it is a Silicon Valley scale-up called Ikasi that works on hypercustomisation of customer engagement and loyalty activities. It is one of the most interesting realities we are studying. At the point of sale, for example, when you buy a product, this start-up uses AI to activate a cross-selling process that proposes related products that are truly consistent with your purchase (to simplify, if you go to buy strawberries, it proposes balsamic vinegar). It sounds trivial, but this technology works from the true and concrete reality of the consumer with positive effects on the e-commerce cart, as well as on the average receipt in the physical shop.

Innovation Retail Village at Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags 2024 The appointment with the Innovation Retail Village, the project realised by the Riva del Garda trade fair, in collaboration with Retail Hub and with the scientific coordination of Alberto Mattiello - member of the Scientific Committee of Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags, dedicated to the start-ups and young companies selected as the most innovative in the footwear and leather goods retail sector, is renewed in January 2024. This is a valuable opportunity for exhibitors and visitors to find the most relevant innovations for the accessory retail sector united in the same space and get a preview of them, but also for the emerging companies involved in the project, which find in the Innovation Retail Village an important springboard to launch themselves on the global market.

Tutte le novità del prossimo Gardabags

Il suo obiettivo? Rilanciare il ruolo degli accessori nell’ambito della produzione di volume. Con lui ripercorriamo la storia di Gardabags e, soprattutto, guardiamo ai progetti della manifestazione nel prossimo futuro.

Quando è nata l'idea di Gardabags?

Gardabags è un progetto nato dall'esigenza dei buyer di Expo Riva Schuh, dettato dalla necessità di affiancare alla calzatura anche l'accessorio. I buyer della calzatura europea e internazionale, infatti, sono sempre venuti a Expo Riva Schuh ad acquistare calzature di volume e, in base a una ricerca effettuata nel periodo pre-Covid, più del 40% ha manifestato l'esigenza di affiancare alla calzatura anche la borsa e gli accessori. Gardabags ha così debuttato un paio d'anni prima dell’avvento del Covid, poi purtroppo la pandemia ne ha un po' frenato il processo di sviluppo. Ma da quest'anno abbiamo deciso di investire maggiormente nel rilancio della manifestazione e - da un'edizione iniziale di gennaio 2023 con una decina di espositori di borse – siamo passati, lo scorso giugno, alla partecipazione di oltre 50 aziende specializzate nella produzione e vendita di borse ed accessori come piccola pelletteria, cinture, articoli da viaggio. Sottolineerei anche l’attenta selezione delle collezioni proposte in fiera effettuata in base ai distretti produttivi e finalizzata ad assicurare ampia varietà di scelta per luoghi di sourcing, tipologia di prodotto e prezzo, con la partecipazione di paesi come Cina, India e Turchia. La presenza italiana è ridotta, ma per un motivo molto semplice: la produzione di borse in pelle o in tessuto in Italia ha un costo elevato e si rivolge a un pubblico più ristretto.

Mauro Di Molfetta, Project Manager Gardabags, ripercorre la storia della manifestazione ‘gemella’ di Expo Riva Schuh e, soprattutto, anticipa le novità che riguardano la prossima edizione, nel segno della centralità degli accessori nel mondo della produzione di volume.

opo aver lavorato per diversi anni per l’associazione di categoria della pelletteria italiana, è stato per una decade responsabile commerciale di alcuni brand di livello alto, sia di abbigliamento che di calzature, per poi tornare al mondo delle borse e, dal 2023, ricopre il ruolo di Project Manager di Gardabags.

Possiamo fornire delle anticipazioni rispetto alla prossima edizione?

Per l’edizione di gennaio 2024 ritengo che il numero di partecipanti resterà sui livelli del giugno scorso, con circa 55-60 aziende di borse e accessori, e la presenza di qualche produttore di valigeria in più, a cui è sempre interessata la piccola e medio-grande distribuzione europea.

Parliamo di produttori di valigeria turchi e cinesi, in particolare, con una rappresentanza italiana. Per quanto riguarda la presenza di accessori moda nella parte calzature, saranno presenti una quarantina di aziende che, insieme alle scarpe, presenteranno anche collezioni di borse.

Gardabags sarà collocata all'interno del centro espositivo di Riva del Garda in due punti distinti: una parte più corposa sarà al padiglione D (occupato per metà dalla pelletteria); nel passaggio tra B2 e A2 troverà posto un altro gruppo di una decina di aziende. Riteniamo che questo posizionamento in più punti faciliti la visita dei buyer e l’acquisto di coloro che sono interessati a calzatura e accessori. Oltre ai Paesi già citati (Cina, India e Turchia), parteciperanno delle rappresentanze da Spagna, Portogallo e Bangladesh.

Un progetto nuovo e di sicuro interesse è quello degli ‘highlights’: ci vuole anticipare qualcosa? È la novità della prossima edizione, un’area dedicata agli highlights, alle tendenze di mercato del settore della pelletteria, sempre nel padiglione D. Il progetto, realizzato in collaborazione con il nostro partner di riferimento Arsutoria si svolgerà su circa 50 metri quadri in cui saranno presentate quattro macro-aree: uomo, donna, unisex e business.

Arsutoria condividerà con gli espositori la sua analisi delle tendenze in ambito pelletteria. Sulla base dei temi rilevanti per la prossima stagione, verranno selezionati alcuni prodotti da esporre all'interno dell'area highlights. Sempre in quest'area verranno organizzati degli speech tenuti dagli esperti di Arsutoria e dedicati proprio alle nuove tendenze. Si tratta di un progetto pilota, che sarà perfezionato nelle prossime edizioni di Gardabags, e che non solo ha lo scopo di offrire ai visitatori informazioni utili al loro business, ma ha anche l’obiettivo di sviluppare una fattiva collaborazione all’interno della community composta da espositori, partner e compratori.

All the novelties of the next Gardabags Mauro Di Molfetta, Gardabags Project Manager, retraces the history of the 'twin' event of Expo Riva Schuh and, above all, anticipates the novelties regarding the next edition, in the sign of the central role of accessories in the world of volume production.

After working for several years for the Italian leather goods trade association, he was for a decade sales manager for a number of highend brands, both clothing and footwear, before returning to the world of bags and, from 2023, holding the position of Project Manager at Gardabags. His goal? To relaunch the role of accessories in volume production. With him, we retrace the history of Gardabags and, above all, look at the projects of the event in the near future.

When was the idea for Gardabags born?

Gardabags is a project born from the need of buyers at Expo Riva Schuh, dictated by the necessity to complement footwear with accessories. European and international footwear buyers, in fact, have always come to Expo Riva Schuh to buy volume footwear and, according to a survey carried out in the pre-Covid period, more than 40% expressed the need to combine footwear with bags and accessories. Gardabags thus debuted a couple of years before the advent of Covid, then unfortunately the pandemic somewhat slowed down the development process. But since this year we have decided to invest more in relaunching the event and - from an initial edition in January 2023 with a dozen or so bag exhibitors - we have moved on, last June, to the participation of over 50 companies specialising in the

production and sale of bags and accessories such as small leather goods, belts, and travel items. I would also like to emphasise the careful selection of the collections proposed at the fair, carried out on the basis of production districts and aimed at ensuring a wide variety of choice in terms of sourcing locations, product type and price, with the participation of countries such as China, India and Turkey. The Italian presence is small, but for a very simple reason: the production of leather or fabric bags in Italy has a high cost and is aimed at a more limited public.

Can we give some anticipations regarding the next edition?

For the January 2024 edition, I believe that the number of participants will remain at the same level as last June, with around 55-60 bag and accessories companies, and the presence of a few more luggage manufacturers, in which small and medium-large European retailers are always interested. We are talking about Turkish and Chinese luggage manufacturers, in particular, with Italian representation. With regard to the presence of fashion accessories in the footwear section, around forty companies will be present, which, along with shoes, will also present bag collections. Gardabags will be located inside the Riva del Garda exhibition centre in two distinct points: a larger part will be in Hall D (half of which will be occupied by leather goods); another group of about ten companies will be located in the transition between B2 and A2. We believe that this multi-point positioning facilitates the visit of buyers and the purchase of those interested in footwear and accessories. In addition to the countries already mentioned (China, India and Turkey), representatives from Spain, Portugal and Bangladesh will participate.

A new and interesting project is that of the 'highlights': would you like to tell us something in advance?

This is the new feature of the next edition, an area dedicated to highlights, to market trends in the leather goods sector, again in Hall D. The project, realised in cooperation with our reference partner Arsutoria, will take place on about 50 square metres in which four macro-areas will be presented: men's, women's, unisex and business.

Arsutoria will share its analysis of trends in leather goods with the exhibitors. Based on the relevant themes for the coming season, a number of products will be selected for display in the highlights area.

Speeches by Arsutoria experts dedicated precisely to the new trends will also be organised in this area. This is a pilot project, which will be perfected in the next editions of Gardabags, and which not only aims to offer visitors useful information for their business, but also has the objective of developing an effective collaboration within the community made up of exhibitors, partners and buyers.

Il Digital Product Passport è una vera rivoluzione

ell’arco dei prossimi anni i brand e le imprese della filiera dovranno tracciare e comunicare i dati sugli impatti ambientali e sociali di ogni singolo prodotto, per allinearsi alle normative europee. È uno dei temi trattati durante l’Evento 4sustainability di Prato.

Ambienti di lavoro sicuri e rispettosi, migliori sistemi retributivi, gestione responsabile delle risorse, scelte intelligenti dei materiali, sistemi circolari. Sono le cinque priorità che i leader internazionali del settore della moda hanno descritto nella Fashion CEO Agenda, la cui edizione 2023 è stata presentata il 27 settembre al Global Fashion Summit di Boston. Ma come fanno i consumatori ad accertarsi che questi impegni siano rispettati, valutando l’impatto sociale e ambientale di ogni singolo capo d’abbigliamento o accessorio? La Commissione europea sta lavorando a uno strumento che assolverà a questo compito: il Passaporto Digitale di Prodotto.

DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT Il Digital Product Passport (DPP) ambisce a diventare un documento informativo ed educativo, un vero e proprio registro digitale con informazioni sull’intero ciclo di vita di un prodotto, tra cui composizione dei materiali, provenienza, percentuale di materie prime riciclate, utilizzo delle sostanze chimiche, consumo idrico ed emissioni di CO2 durante la fase di produzione, modalità d’uso e di manutenzione, iter corretto per il riciclo ecc. Informazioni condivise lungo tutta la catena del valore e accessibili tramite un identificatore fisico come un QR Code o altri Data Carrier come gli NFC o gli RFID. I DPP potrebbero rivoluzionare la progettazione, la produzione e il consumo di prodotti, fornendo ai consumatori e alle imprese informazioni affidabili e comparabili sul loro impatto ambientale e sociale. Inoltre, i DPP possono facilitare la transizione verso un’economia circolare, migliorando la tracciabilità del ciclo di vita dei prodotti e fornendo informazioni utili per il riuso, il riciclo e la riparazione.

Possono infine rafforzare la comunicazione aziendale, semplificare i messaggi agli stakeholder, proteggere la reputazione del marchio agganciandosi anche a sistemi anticontraffazione e aiutare le autorità a condurre controlli più efficaci.

Tali sistemi sono ancora in fase di sviluppo, ma la direzione intrapresa dalle istituzioni europee è chiara. Il Regolamento sull’Eco-

design per i prodotti sostenibili potrebbe entrare in vigore già nel 2024 e gradualmente estendersi fino al 2030. Tra i primi settori interessati ci sarà l’industria tessile, insieme a quella elettronica, chimica e dei prodotti per l’edilizia. Il fine ultimo è che, entro il 2030, i prodotti tessili che entreranno nel mercato dell’UE siano durevoli, riparabili e riciclabili, realizzati principalmente con fibre riciclate, privi di sostanze nocive e prodotti in modo etico nel rispetto dei diritti sociali e dell’ambiente.

Nonostante i vantaggi dei DPP, non mancano i nodi da sciogliere: aspetti come la privacy dei dati, per esempio, le incertezze regolamentari e l’interoperabilità dei dati e della tecnologia. I brand e le imprese della filiera devono iniziare fin d’ora ad affrontare queste sfide, a partire dalla costruzione di sistemi per la raccolta e la verifica dei dati basati sulle dimensioni-chiave di impatto ambientale e sociale dell’organizzazione. È un’occasione utile anche per innovarsi, collaborare con i propri stakeholder e posizionarsi meglio sul mercato fidelizzando i propri clienti.

EVENTO 4SUSTAINABILITY Quello dei Digital Product Passport è stato uno dei temi nodali trattati durante la decima edizione dell’Evento Annuale 4sustainability, dal titolo On the Road - Misurazione d’impatto e trasparenza di filiera. Il sistema moda verso il Digital Product Passport, che ha visto

riunito a Prato, nella storica sede del Lanificio F.lli Balli, il gotha del fashion & luxury, con tutti i maggiori brand internazionali e l’eccellenza della filiera produttiva italiana. Oltre 350 gli ospiti accreditati.

Sul palco, speaker eccellenti distribuiti su tre panel in cui si è dibattuto di trasparenza di filiera e misurazione d’impatto, passaporto digitale di prodotto e impegni condivisi.

PRINCIPIO DI RESPONSABILITÀ Hanno dialogato fra loro, nel primo panel dal titolo Partnership for the Goals: perché fare squadra, Leonardo Raffaelli (Co-titolare del Lanificio F.lli Balli), Fabio Campana (CEO del Lanificio dell’Olivo), Ettore Piacenza (CEO di Piacenza 1733)e Andrea Crespi (Direttore Generale di Eurojersey e Vicepresidente di Sistema Moda Italia).

Per quest’ultimo, è importante che il motto delle aziende non sia più “dobbiamo essere sostenibili”, ma sia “essere fattivamente responsabili”. Per Crespi il tema principale deve essere quello di dismettere i panni del marketing per indossare quello dei misuratori, perché oggi la sostenibilità passa attraverso l’indicazione di dati precisi e concreti. L’obbiettivo, del resto, è fare sempre meglio con meno risorse. Non abituarsi mai ai propri standard produttivi, ma sforzarsi sempre di trovare nuove e più sostenibili soluzioni. “Per farlo è necessario rendere partecipi, responsabili, propositivi e proattivi tutti i collaboratori”, sostiene Crespi.

AGGREGAZIONE E DUE DILIGENCE Il secondo panel ha avuto come focus la Corporate Due Diligence Legislation e il concetto di trasparenza di filiera. Il confronto ha visto seduti insieme allo stesso tavolo i vertici delle tre maggiori aggregazioni della filiera produttiva della moda e del lusso, e cioè Attila Kiss (CEO di Gruppo Florence), Matteo Marzotto (Presidente di MinervaHub) e Claudio Rovere (CEO di Holding Moda). A Filippo Bernocchi, Docente di Circolarità alla LUISS Business School, il compito di “portare a terra” la normativa chiarendone confini e possibili implicazioni per l’operatività delle aziende.

Le 30 aziende rappresentate da Gruppo Florence, spiegano bene l’importanza di aggregarsi. “Fare gruppo serve per affrontare al

meglio le sempre nuove e impegnative sfide del mercato che le singole aziende italiane, pur talentuose, non sarebbero in grado di gestire”, sottolinea Kiss. E il tema sostenibilità rientra in pieno in questi aspetti difficilmente affrontabili in solitario, in special modo se si pensa alla lunga filiera che sottostà al comparto moda: “Le nostre 30 aziende – prosegue Kiss – si sorreggono su una catena di fornitura che conta quasi 900 realtà imprenditoriali”.

Se tra gli obbiettivi principali di una supply chain sostenibile vi è la trasparenza e la tracciabilità, non è di certo facile ingaggiare e gestire mille soggetti. Proprio in quest’ottica, uno dei temi toccati dal panel è stato l’armonizzazione delle richieste che i brand, il legislatore o il consumatore finale pretendono dal mondo produttivo.

Ancor prima di definire quali azioni un’azienda dovrebbe intraprendere per risultare sostenibile è proprio la raccolta dati, non ancora allineata rispetto a degli standard inesistenti, a risultare una delle sfide più urgenti e ardue da affrontare.

Per Rovere, di Holding Moda, il concetto di sostenibilità non può prescindere dal fornire agli investitori una filiera tracciata, certificata e trasparenze in modo completo. Ma sottolinea anche un altro aspetto interessante: “Per noi sostenibilità significa prima di tutto mettere al centro le persone, a partire dalla loro formazione finalizzata a migliorare la qualità del loro lavoro e a far sì che il patrimonio del saper-fare non si perda, impoverendo l’intero settore e rendendo praticamente insostenibile l’attività manifatturiera”.

Filippo Bernocchi allarga lo sguardo sull’Europa e sui fattori legislativi: “L’Europa ha le idee ben chiare, punta sulla sostenibilità e in particolare sulla circolarità per recuperare competitività a livello internazionale, per contrastare il dumping a cui la globalizzazione ha sottoposto l’economia del Vecchio Continente”.

Secondo Bernocchi, l’attuale pietra d’inciampo non è rappresentata tanto dalle leggi che vengono promulgate a Bruxelles, quasi tutte condivisibili, quanto dall’accelerazione dei tempi di attuazione dei provvedimenti. “La rivoluzione copernicana della due diligence a cui stiamo assistendo dovrà tenere conto delle catene di fornitura, senza dubbio l’anello debole della filiera”. Di certo, sostiene Bernocchi, le piccole aziende verranno assistite dai grandi gruppi >

a valle e potranno contare sui fenomeni di aggregazione, ma sarà anche necessario che vengano previste formule e strumenti finanziari adeguati affinché la transizione non lasci sul campo più morti che vincitori.

Infine, il professore di Circolarità della LUISS Business School, ricorda almeno uno dei temi problematici riguardanti la tracciabilità e la trasparenza delle filiere: “Il saper-fare delle aziende va anche protetto perché è un patrimonio più importante anche del capitale sociale di un’impresa”.

CASE HISTORY DI PRODOTTO Digital Product Passport: come raccontare il prodotto ai propri stakeholder è stato il tema del terzo panel. Su questo tema, molto attuale e sentito anche per l’accelerazione impressa dal legislatore europeo, si sono espressi Luca De Iulis (Marketing & Sales Director di Conceria Montebello), Alberto Lampis (Strategic Sourcing Raw Material Senior Specialist di Hugo Boss), Andrea Rossi (CFO di Achille Pinto) e Michele Casucci (Founder e General Manager di Certilogo, eBay Group).

Hugo Boss crede nella “necessità di comunicare al consumatore tutta la storia del brand”. E non lo si fa, sostiene Alberto Lampis, perché costretti da leggi sempre più stringenti, ma perché è ormai chiaro come la trasparenza delle filiere sia un ottimo scudo per proteggere il marchio da ogni forma di attacco a livello globale.

“Infatti – dice Lampis – la nostra timeline prevede nel breve termine di risultare conformi alle varie legislazioni, ma nel medio termine si prefigge la piena tracciabilità, mentre nel lungo periodo vuole affrontare il tema del fine vita dei prodotti”.

“Tatuiamo tutte le nostre pelli perché la tracciabilità è il nostro mantra, da moltissimi anni ormai”, racconta Luca De Iulis della Conceria Montebello. Gli fa eco Andrea Rossi di Achille Pinto: “Siamo partiti 10 anni fa puntando sulla tracciabilità con l’obbiettivo di scanda-

gliare tutta la nostra filiera. Oggi, in azienda lavora un team di 5 persone che si occupano solo del tema sostenibilità”.

Certilogo ha riportato l’attenzione sul Passaporto Digitale dei Prodotti: “Rappresenta una sfida complicata, ma se la si fronteggia in modo proattivo diviene occasione per vincere altre sfide. Penso alla contraffazione, per esempio. Un cancro che danneggia non solo i ricavi dei brand, ma anche l’ambiente, visto che favorisce produzioni senza dubbio poco controllate, non agevola il riciclo e mina le fondamenta del second hand”.

UNA RIVOLUZIONE Un evento, quello organizzato a Prato da 4sustainability, molto partecipato e che ha messo in evidenza un punto chiaro: siamo di fronte a una vera e propria rivoluzione copernicana, a una discontinuità forte con il passato. La rivoluzione digitale alleatasi con la cultura della sostenibilità ribalterà (e migliorerà) il business della moda.

Certo, oggi è il tempo per passare dalle dichiarazioni agli investimenti, un passaggio mai banale che, però, può risultare una grande opportunità: la misurazione delle proprie attività può condurre a un miglioramento dell’efficienza dei processi e a un innalzamento della qualità dei prodotti. E può anche offrire ai clienti quel valore aggiunto complesso che potrebbe permettere di recuperare le marginalità negli anni erose dalla concorrenza in dumping con il resto del mondo.

The Digital Product Passport is a real revolution Over the next few years, brands and companies in the supply chain will have to track and report data on the environmental and social impacts of each product to align with European regulations. This is one of the topics discussed during the 4sustainability Event in Prato.

Safe and respectful workplaces, better pay systems, responsible resource management, smart material choices, and circular systems. These are the five priorities outlined by international fashion industry leaders in the Fashion CEO Agenda, the 2023 edition of which was presented Sept. 27 at the Global Fashion Summit in Boston. But how do consumers make sure these commitments are met by assessing the social and environmental impact of each and every garment or accessory? The European Commission is working on a tool that will accomplish this task: the Digital Product Passport.

DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT The Digital Product Passport (DPP) aspires to become an informative and educational document, a real digital register with in-

formation on the entire life cycle of a product, including material composition, origin, percentage of recycled raw materials, use of chemicals, water consumption and CO2 emissions during the production phase, use and maintenance methods, proper process for recycling, etc. Information shared throughout the value chain and accessible through a physical identifier such as a QR Code or other Data Carriers such as NFCs or RFIDs. DPPs could revolutionize product design, production, and consumption by providing consumers and businesses with reliable and comparable information about their environmental and social impacts. In addition, DPPs can facilitate the transition to a circular economy by improving the life cycle traceability of products and providing useful information for reuse, recycling and repair. Finally, they can strengthen corporate communication, simplify messages to stakeholders, protect brand reputation by also hooking into anticounterfeiting systems, and help authorities conduct more effective controls. Such systems are still under development, but the direction taken by European institutions is clear. The Ecodesign Regulation for sustainable products could enter into force as early as 2024 and gradually extend to 2030. Among the first sectors affected will be the textile industry, along with the electronics, chemical, and building products industries. The ultimate goal is that, by 2030, textile products entering the EU market will be durable, repairable and recyclable, made primarily from recycled fibers, free of harmful substances, and produced ethically with respect for social rights and the environment.

Despite the benefits of DPPs, there is no shortage of knots to unravel: issues such as data privacy, for example, regulatory uncertainties, and interoperability of data and technology. Brands and companies in the supply chain need to start addressing these challenges now, starting with building systems for data collection and verification based on the organization’s key-dimensions of the environmental and social impact. It is also a useful opportunity to innovate, collaborate with their stakeholders and better position themselves in the market by building customer loyalty. >

4SUSTAINABILITY EVENT That of Digital Product Passports was one of the nodal themes discussed during the 10th Annual 4sustainability Event, entitled On the Road - Impact Measurement and Supply Chain Transparency.

The fashion system towards the Digital Product Passport, which brought together in Prato, in the historic headquarters of Lanificio F.lli Balli, the fashion & luxury elite, with all the major international brands and the excellence of the Italian production chain. More than 350 guests were accredited.

On stage, excellent speakers distributed over three panels where supply chain transparency and impact measurement, digital product passport and shared commitments were debated.

PRINCIPLE OF ACCOUNTABILITY They dialogued among themselves, in the first panel entitled Partnership for the Goals: why to team up, Leonardo Raffaelli (Co-owner of Lanificio F.lli Balli), Fabio Campana (CEO of Lanificio dell’Olivo), Ettore Piacenza (CEO of Piacenza 1733) and Andrea Crespi (General Director of Eurojersey and Vice President of Sistema Moda Italia). For the latter, it is important that the motto of companies is no longer “we must be sustainable,” but is “be factually responsible.”

For Crespi, the main theme must be to cast off the shoes of marketers and put on the shoes of measurers, because today sustainability passes through the provision of accurate and concrete data.

The goal, after all, is to do better and better with fewer resources.

Never get used to your production standards, but always strive to find new and more sustainable solutions. “To do this it is necessary to make all employees participate, responsible, and proactive,” Crespi argues.

AGGREGATION AND DUE DILIGENCE The second panel focused on Corporate Due Diligence Legislation and the concept of supply chain transparency. The discussion saw the heads of the three largest aggregations of the fashion and luxury production chain sitting together at the same table, namely Attila Kiss (CEO of Gruppo Florence), Matteo Marzotto (President of

MinervaHub) and Claudio Rovere (CEO of Holding Moda). Filippo Bernocchi, Professor of Circularity at LUISS Business School, was tasked with “bringing the legislation to the ground” by clarifying its boundaries and possible implications for companies’ operations.

The 30 companies represented by Gruppo Florence, explain well the importance of aggregating. “Grouping together is needed to better address the ever-changing and demanding market challenges that individual Italian companies, while talented, would not be able to handle,” Kiss stresses. And the issue of sustainability falls squarely within these aspects that are difficult to tackle alone, especially if one thinks of the long supply chain that underlies the fashion industry: “Our 30 companies,” Kiss continues, “are supported by a supply chain that has almost 900 businesses.

While the main goals of a sustainable supply chain include transparency and traceability, it is certainly not easy to engage and manage a thousand players. With this in mind, one of the topics touched on by the panel was the harmonization of the demands that brands, legislators or the end consumer demand from the manufacturing world.

Even before defining what actions a company should take to be sustainable, it is precisely data collection, not yet aligned with respect to nonexistent standards, that proves to be one of the most urgent and arduous challenges to be faced.

For Rovere, of Holding Moda, the concept of sustainability cannot be separated from providing investors with a fully tracked, certified and transparent supply chain. But he also stresses another interesting aspect: “For us, sustainability means first of all putting people at the center, starting with their training aimed at improving the quality of their work and ensuring that the heritage of know-how is not lost, impoverishing the entire sector and making manufacturing practically unsustainable.”

Filippo Bernocchi broadens his gaze to Europe and legislative factors: “Europe has clear ideas, focusing on sustainability and in particular on circularity to regain international competitiveness, to counter the dumping to which globalization has subjected the economy of the Old Continent.” According to Bernocchi, the current

stumbling block is not so much the laws that are being enacted in Brussels, almost all of which are agreeable, but the speeding up of the time it takes to implement the measures. “The Copernican due diligence revolution we are witnessing will have to take into account supply chains, undoubtedly the weakest link in the chain.” Certainly, Bernocchi argues, small companies will be assisted by large downstream groups and will be able to rely on the phenomena of aggregation, but it will also be necessary for appropriate formulas and financial instruments to be provided so that the transition does not leave more dead companies on the field than winners.

Finally, the professor of Circularity at LUISS Business School, recalls at least one of the problematic issues regarding the traceability and transparency of supply chains: “The know-how of companies must also be protected because it is a more important asset even than the social capital.”

PRODUCT CASE HISTORIES Digital Product Passport: how to tell the product to its stakeholders was the theme of the third panel. Luca De Iulis (Marketing & Sales Director of Montebello Tannery), Alberto Lampis (Strategic Sourcing Raw Material Senior Specialist of Hugo Boss), Andrea Rossi (CFO of Achille Pinto) and Michele Casucci (Founder and General Manager of Certilogo, eBay Group) spoke on this topic, which is very current and felt also due to the acceleration imposed by the European legislator.

Hugo Boss believes in “the need to communicate the whole brand story to the consumer.” And this is not done, says Alberto Lampis, because they are constrained by increasingly stringent laws, but because it is now clear that transparency of supply chains is an excellent shield to protect the brand from all forms of global attacks. “In fact,” Lampis says, “our timeline is in the short term to

be compliant with the various legislations, but in the medium term it aims for full traceability, while in the long term it wants to address the end-of-life of products”.

“We tattoo all our leathers because traceability has been our mantra for many, many years now,” says Luca De Iulis of Montebello Tannery. He is echoed by Andrea Rossi of Achille Pinto: “We started 10 years ago focusing on traceability with the goal of scanning our entire supply chain. Today, there is a team of five people working in the company who are only concerned with sustainability.”

Certilogo brought attention back to the Digital Product Passport: “It represents a complicated challenge, but if we face it proactively it becomes an opportunity to overcome other challenges. I’m thinking of counterfeiting, for example. A cancer that damages not only the revenues of brands, but also the environment, since it encourages productions that are undoubtedly poorly controlled, does not facilitate recycling and undermines the foundations of the second hand.”

A REVOLUTION An event, the one organized in Prato by 4sustainability, which was well attended and highlighted a clear point: we are facing a real Copernican revolution, a strong discontinuity with the past. The digital revolution allied with the culture of sustainability will overturn (and improve) the business of fashion. Of course, today is the time to move from declarations to investments, a step that is never trivial but can prove to be a great opportunity: measuring one’s activities can lead to improved process efficiency and higher product quality. And it can also offer customers the complex added value that could enable them to recover margins over the years eroded by dumping competition with the rest of the world.
