SAFETY
Even safety shoes become more green THE USE OF RECYCLED AND BIO-BASED MATERIALS IS GROWING, WHILE RESEARCH FOCUSES ON LIGHTNESS AND COMFORT In the accident prevention sector, each novelty represents a step forward on the road to improve health, well-being and worker safety. All this applies to professional clothing but even more so to safety footwear because there are many contexts where the most insidious risk factors concern the ground, both for outdoor and indoor work environments. In short, safety frequently starts from our feet, from footwear. A truth that explains the vastness of the offer available today on the market with specific footwear for each type of risk and particular professional category. The search for an ever higher protection level, accompanied by major comfort, is at the heart of all manufacturers of safety shoes. Today, obtaining a major lightweighted shoe represents undoubtedly a key request, obviously aimed at increasing the user’s perception of comfort. The work in on reducing the weight of the single component, from the upper to the sole, passing through the protective toecap and the anti-perforation plate, because only by reducing the thickness or volume of each single element can the overall weight of the safety footwear be lowered without having to give up on the highest protection level. In this case, research mainly concerns materials: in every field experiments are made on alternative materials, compounds or composites, that are lighter but capable of ensuring equally high technical features. All this in the face of regulations that become more demanding every year in terms of technical requirements to be respected. A continuous challenge, far from being easy, but that certainly represents a great stimulus for the entire supply chain. Another transversal theme that has also forcefully entered the safety segment is that of the growing use of recycled and recyclable materials, a first response to the request for greater sustainability that comes from the market also in this sector. This was clearly seen at the A+A 2021 fair which was held last October in Düsseldorf. The uppers, linings, soles, insoles and laces of many new safety shoes are made from recycled materials, at least in part. In the case of uppers, the proposals mostly concern the use of polyester yarns derived from PET, or from used plastic bottles. Again, the challenge is to maintain performance unchanged, because recycled materials can, for example, offer lower abrasion resistance. In this respect, each company has faced the problem by developing different, always innovative solutions. In the case of soles, on the market today you can find proposals in partially or totally recycled polyurethane (PU), but there is also talk of BIO polyurethane, obtained with a good percentage of organic components made from renewable sources. 1 8 0 SAFETY

A+A 2021, a step forward in safety because “People Matter” THE FAIR HELD IN GERMANY LAST OCTOBER WAS A SUCCESS CONSIDERING THE DIFFICULT SITUATION CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC SITUATION. IT WELCOMED 1,204 EXHIBITORS AND 25,000 VISITORS. THE SEARCH FOR REAL SUSTAINABILITY OF PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES WITH THE GOAL OF CARBON NEUTRALITY WAS AT THE HEART OF THE DEBATE IN THE SECTOR A more than satisfactory result for A+A 2021, the world’s leading trade fair for safety, security and health at work, which was held in Düsseldorf from 26 to 29 October 2021. Despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, 1,204 exhibitors from 56 countries, and more than 25,000 trade visitors attended the event. With these figures A+A – and the International Congress for Occupational Health and Safety held at the same time – have once again demonstrated the increased attention of professionals towards innovations coming from this sector. Today more than ever the focus in the world of work is on people’s health. It is no coincidence that “People Matter” was the motto of this year’s trade fair, during which the main issues focused on the pandemic and hygiene, together with the presentation of the latest developments in innovative protective equipment. But megatrends such as increasing digitalisation and the quest for real sustainability of products and production processes were also among the key themes discussed at this year’s fair. Once again this year, despite a few defections, numerous shoe manufacturers and their suppliers of materials, accessories and technologies were present at the German event. Sustainability is also being widely discussed in the field of safety footwear, which today is expressed above all through the use of fabrics, materials and components made from recycled products or renewable sources, while new technologies offer major advantages in terms of saving natural resources and energy. Generally speaking, leading companies are now looking at Carbon Neutrality,

the new frontier in the fight against climate changes that is pursued through the implementation of production processes that are monitored and optimised to reduce CO2 emissions as much as possible and offsetting those that cannot be avoided with specific projects. All this without ever letting our guard down on safety issues with the search for increasingly effective and comfortable PPE. As always, the next edition of A+A in Düsseldorf is scheduled to be held two years from now, precisely 24 to 27 October 2023.

Grisport, here comes the sustainable ECO 3P line FOCUS ON THE USE OF RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE MATERIALS FOR BOTH PRODUCT AND PACKAGING Grisport has just launched the Active Pro Wave/ECO 3P line on the safety market where the three P’s stand for Product, Packaging and Process, the three company’s pillars which are increasingly optimised in terms of sustainability. A theme that has been the focus of attention of the Venetian brand for years. This time the focus is on recycling. The upper, laces, shock-absorbing insert and insole of the new shoes consist of 100%, the lining of 60% and the protective foil of 84% recycled polyester. Equipped with a high-performance sole thanks to the patented Active system and the insertion of expanded Pu, the shoe also boasts extreme lightness, weighing less than 499 grams. As for packaging, only recycled and recyclable cartons and boxes are used. The boxes are made with a particular self-assembled patented system, to minimise their overall dimensions even during transport, which in turn translates into fewer vehicles on the roads. In terms of production, in addition to the selection of more sustainable raw materials when not really recycled and the choice of suppliers who have sustainability certifications, some time ago the Italian company has started using a photovoltaic system that covers about 70% of its energy requirements, carries out the separate collection of its waste to facilitate its recycling also by third parties and boasts a careful management of water resources that includes the recovery of rainwater. Grisport has also already implemented a traceability system to verify the origin of the materials that allows you to retrace all the production stages to guarantee maximum transparency.

Here is the new SIGNUM 20 STEMMA HAS DEVELOPED AN INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY TO PRODUCE POLYURETHANE BOOTS Lighter and more comfortable than PVC boots, less expensive than rubber boots and more versatile than EVA products, polyurethane boots are becoming more and more popular in the safety and outdoor market. The traditional injection technology, which is at the base of almost all the worldwide production of polyurethane boots, runs up against some limits of this process, among which the main one is certainly the limited productivity. The “RPU Spray Technology” and revolutionary mould-holder system has enabled Stemma to develop an innovative process, now available in the new “SIGNUM 20” machine for polyurethane boots. This valuable tool allows to overcome these limits and to start a real revolution in the market. With an effective cycle time of less than 30 seconds and which is not bound to the use of polyurethanes with long extraction times, it guarantees an increase in productivity of about 30% compared to the traditional process. Moreover, an openmould process makes it possible to create extremely light products with particularly thin thicknesses, representing an effective innovation that improves the production and characteristics of the boot. The uniform distribution of colour and the possibility to use a wide range of linings are other characterising aspects of this new machine, now available on the market.

Cofra, increasingly more comfortable and ultralightweight styles FOCUS ON THE LIGHTECH E FITNESS LINES Lightech and Fitness are the most successful lines in 2021 of Cofra, footwear manufacturer. The first line focuses on lightness, to meet the ever more demanding requirements also in safety shoes but which necessarily needs to deal with essential components such as the toecap or the antiperforation insole which obviously have their own weight. The team of technicians and designers of the Apulian company worked to lighten the overall weight of the finished shoe, managing to bring it to 420 grams, far below a traditional work shoe while remaining compliant with the requirements of the 20345:2011 standard. The sole features XL Exgtralight®, an Evabased foam material, very lightweight but also flexible and resistant, which guarantees excellent physical-mechanical properties such as abrasion and hydrocarbons resistance. Also the other key components are lightened, without compromises in terms of protection, such as the antiperforation insole in conductive non-woven fabric, the antibacterial and breathable insole and the fibreglass toecap resistant to impacts up to 200 J. The upper is in water-repellent fabric, also available in recycled polyester. The colour combinations and finishes of the Lightech line are designed to satisfy the tastes of a young and sporty audience, attentive to their outfit even in the workplace. Improving comfort was instead the main objective that led to the development of the Fitness line, characterised by a PU/TPU sole with three self-modelling gel inserts and with different densities positioned in the metatarsal and heel support points, they adapt to the shape of the arch, absorbing the different percentages of applied load. The special polyurethane inserted fussbett also contributes to the foot’s feelings of well-being.

FITNESS

From Pri.Ma.Tex the most resistant fabrics in the world AMONG THE NOVELTIES OF THE TUSCAN COMPANY, ULTRA-THIN ANTIPERFORATION MIDSOLES AND HIGH-TENACITY UPPERS FROM RECYCLED YARNS DERIVED FROM PET When Rudi Priami talks about the technical results achieved during the years, you feel all the passion of a man who has dedicated his life to designing and developing innovative technical fabrics, always one step ahead of market demands and sometimes even of safety regulations. Specialist among many other things in antiperforation foils for safety footwear, his Pri.Ma.Tex Manufacture has just launched the Thinner fabric which, of only 2,8 mm thickness and 40% lighter than similar products, is able to withstand 3 mm conical pointed nails, the smallest in the world. A very high level item that was immediately appreciated by the best manufacturers of safety shoes looking for ever thinner and lightweight materials: “We managed to reach thicknesses that were unthinkable until yesterday that allow us to further lighten the weight of the finished shoe”, states proudly the Tuscan entrepreneur. Attentive to the sustainable requests coming from the market, but without ever compromising in terms of quality, Pri.Ma.Tex has recently developed very high tenacity fabrics made with a variable percentage of recycled yarns (certified NewLife® brand GRS) which offer very high abrasion resistance, even higher than that of new yarns. “Fabrics based on recycled material usually perform worse explains Priami – but we managed to overcome the problem thanks to a special advanced technology developed in our research laboratories”. Words comforted
by the results of the certifications. In fact, all items have a specific certificate of abrasion resistance which in many cases even complies with the EN 388 standard relating to the safety of gloves, therefore much stricter than that of footwear, according to which the products are subjected to thousands of test cycles with sandpaper before obtaining the certification. “Our ‘weakest’ upper exceeds 10,000 cycles in abrasion tests and is eco-friendly thanks to recycled yarns, all GRS certified”, adds Priami. Moreover, Pri.Ma.Tex boasts an incredible experience on the resistance of fabrics, as demonstrated by the development of a very high tenacity, lightweight and breathable fabric (AAA certified, the highest level ever, patented worldwide) that has found wide application in the motorcycle world. “The VirusPower® fabric was developed by my son Christian after Simoncelli’s tragic accident on the circuit to guarantee more safety to the riders, and now it is used to make brand motorcycle suits that will compete at the next World Championship in a new class of very young riders”, explains Priami. The company is also keen to recall that it was the first one to launch, in 2019, a high-tenacity item with the insertion of a thick single filament nylon thread that ensures maximum resistance to work shoes subject to breakage due to repeated bending stresses in the toebox area. “An idea that came to me while fishing for tuna”, concludes the textile entrepreneur with a smile.

Alba&N: we choose to recycle THE COMPANY PRESENTS THE RE-CHOOSE® LINE MADE WITH PET DERIVED FABRICS In Düsseldorf on the occasion of the A+A fair, Alba&N presented its new line of safety shoes called RE-CHOOSE®. A name that comes from the union of two words: recycle and choose. The shoes of this line with registered trademark have upper, lining and laces made of 100% recycled materials deriving from the recovery of plastic bottles (PET). Beautiful leaf prints characterise these first models but the fabric patterns can of course be different and even customised. The constant research on materials has also led to the selection of new tech fabrics with high resistance to abrasion or cut that have given life to such light and colourful work shoes that they actually seem practical and comfortable sneakers, but that are also perfectly compliant with the different European safety regulations. Attention to design has always been a constant feature of this company which boasts a logistics office in Trani in Italy where all the research, design, certification and warehouse activities are carried out (the 20/25 most requested items are always available for immediate delivery) and four modern factories in Albania that can produce up to nine thousand pairs of shoes a day thanks to 2,200 employees and 7 injection carousels. All footwear manufactured in these factories are certified according to EN ISO 20345:2011 and 20347:2012 standards. The accurate service and production flexibility that also allows a high level of customisation are the strenghts of Alba&N. Beyond its brands, the company produces for private labels and exports worldwide. The company also boasts the ISO 9001 certification issued by Tüv Austria.

Utmospheric® the waterproof 3D lining by Sympatex A FULLY AUTOMATED PROCESS REVOLUTIONISES THE PRODUCTION CHAIN Sympatex Technologies, a pioneer in the field of sustainable functional fabrics, has been investing in research for thirty years to find solutions and improve the world of footwear, including safety shoes. At the Düsseldorf fair of last October, the German company presented Utmospheric®, its innovative technology to create completely waterproof booties using a patented thermoforming process. This special processing gives the lining three-dimensionality which, totally free of seams and folds like a sock, adapts perfectly to the anatomy of the foot ensuring maximum breathability. The Utmospheric® production system is fully automated and aims to revolutionise the entire supply chain in a more sustainable way because it eliminates the traditional manual processing steps of cutting and sewing, without using adhesive tapes and reducing waste. Moreover, the materials used are 100% recycled and recyclable. At the same time, the process ensures totally waterproof shoes, bringing the product to a higher quality level. Also because the intrinsic elastic properties of the laminated material used ensure a natural anatomical adaptation, regardless of weather conditions or the activity performed. Over Stampi loves hard challenges THE ITALIAN COMPANY IS LEADER IN THE PRODUCTION OF MOULDS IN THE SAFETY SEGMENT Over Stampi, a company that has been on the market for forty years, is one of the largest manufacturers of moulds in the footwear sector at European level. “We were born in the safety sector which still represents about half of our production today”, explains Matteo Sarto, general manager of the company located in Cassolnovo, in the heart of the mechanical-footwear district of Vigevano. “Over the years we have also expanded the range of action to other types of footwear, from trekking to fashion, and today our molds cover all the needs related to the most varied materials and production techniques”. The first-rate technological equipment, such as the Cad/Cam systems for 3D design and the numerous 5-axis CNC machines that allow you to process very complex drawings, ensuring maximum precision of the final product are the strengths of this company, which collaborates with the major brands in the sector. Also the internal R&D laboratory is the flagship of Over Stampi, a true incubator of ideas and solutions to be proposed to the market, always ready to accept new technical challenges. Thanks to strategic choices and continuous investments, today the entire production is carried out internally, in a factory with an area of about three thousand square metres that offers a production capacity that in recent years has even been doubled to be able to respond to market demands. What do clients of the safety segment look for? “Everyone looks for new ideas because the market is always eager for novelties that can make a difference. For our part, we are working closely with some customers on important new projects that will soon see the light. In general terms, I can anticipate that an attempt is being made to combine maximum comfort and safety in an increasingly advantageous way also for those who produce”, concludes Sarto.

Uniwork, lightness and sustainability NEW UPPERS IN RECYCLED FABRICS FOR THE URBAN LINE At the latest edition of the Düsseldorf security fair, Uniwork presented its new Urban line which is characterised by uppers made of recycled materials and soles in dual density PU. We are talking about sustainable, comfortable and light footwear for men and women, which meet the S3 technical requirements, equipped with dual shock resistant insole, composite toe cap and anti-perforation kevlar midsole. Leader in the safety segment, Uniwork is one of the reference brands of the Over Teak shoe factory in Barletta, which created it in 1996 by focusing on the continuous innovation of work footwear. Over time the brand has grown steadily and today it boasts a daily production capacity that exceeds six thousand pairs thanks to three automated carousels with 24 stations each. How did it go last year for Uniwork? “Despite the difficult context related to the pandemic, we are working at full speed because orders are increasing – tells us Roberto Mastrullo, sales manager - The production problems of the Far East mean that today some of the major buyers are returning to consider Italian and European productions”. Does the price gap still matter? “For safety shoes, the price theme is relative. The product must comply with European regulations and meet all safety requirements, after which the price issue takes a back seat. From a technical perspective, our commitment is maximum: before launching a new model we have it tested and certified by the main specialised centres such as Cimac and Ricotest”. What are the new challenges of the safety shoe? “In addition to the constant search for lightness that results in the use of non-metallic components, also the sustainability issue has become fundamental in this sector and we do our part in many different ways. The latest product innovations are, for example, the uppers made of recycled material such as those of the Urban line. We use high tenacity water-repellent technical fabrics produced by Primatex that are made with Newlife ® yarns made from recycled PET”, explains Mastrullo. Also corporate certifications confirm Uniwork’s commitment to sustainability. After the ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) recognitions, in November 2020 the Apulian company also obtained the SA8000 Certification as evidence of the important path taken in terms of environmental, social and governance measures (ESG) to protect its workers and the territory.

Toworkfor, safety becomes bold THE PORTUGUESE BRAND AIMS TO LEAP IN QUALITY THROUGH A NEW ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN High-level short movies that capture attention on the safety theme by ironically playing with the names of the major protagonists of action movies such as Tom Cruise, Will Smith and Wesley Snipes. And then a series of posters with funny claims that are addressed directly to users, to those “heroes” of the working class to whom the products are intended; photos and writing in large letters such as: ‘Protect you like suits protect executives from real work. Or: ‘One less reason to complain at work’. And again: ‘Ladies, protect your feet against toxic masculinity’. These are some of the contents of a new and important advertising campaign that the Portuguese brand Toworkfor anticipated in Düsseldorf on the occasion of the A+A fair and that it will soon launch on the European market with the aim of strengthening and differentiating its image. “With these messages we directly address the final consumer - explains Orlando Andrade, marketing manager - Through the motto “boldly safe” we aim to ensure that users recognise themselves in our brand as bearers of a philosophy of life (and work) based on boldness, obviously

always in complete safety”. The strategy seems to be to win the trust of the end user through a different storytelling, where the user himself is protagonist, not the product. “In the safety segment, everyone is now talking about technology, comfort, design, sustainability... In the end, it seems that there are no real differences between one brand and another. Of course we also continue to work on these aspects to always give the best in terms of technical and aesthetic requirements, but in terms of communication we try to take a step forward by focusing on the consumer who becomes the recipient of more personal messages that play with the emotional sphere”. From the product catalogue to the shoebox, everything will be revised on the basis of the new campaign that will mainly develop through digital social channels. Soon also the brand’s website www.toworkfor.pt will completely be renovated to offer a more modern and appealing look.

AFTER THE LAUNCH OF THE COMPOSITE ROUND EYELET, IT NOW APPLIES THE SAME TECHNOLOGY TO OVAL EYELETS Renowned for its orientation towards innovation, over time, Hawai Italia has presented numerous items fruit of revolutionary research, including speed laces, rivets and buckles in Top Light, Pro AirWaterblock, and 200 Reef, the best composite toecap for high performance applications. Recently, it launched on the market an exclusive and innovative composite round eyelet that meets the stringent safety regulations and which, unlike metal eyelets that have serious oxidation problems, meets production needs by transforming the safety shoe into a stable item that also considers the aesthetic content. Thanks to the use of a special R material, combined with the technologies implemented by Hawai Italia, the eyelet can be applied cold with automatic eyeletting machines. In terms of production, the advantages offered by this application system are considerable: rapid assembly, consequent cost savings and precision in processing. Adding to all this the exclusive advantages of the composite material: the lightness and the possibility of personalising design and colour, then it is possible to obtain an almost revolutionary product: until now it was considered impossible to realise an application with plastic eyelets with automatic drilling machines!

“Today this product undergoes further evolution: - explains Giovanni Fainelli, owner of the company - despite the difficult months of the pandemic, Hawai Italia continued the innovation process and developed the same technology used for round composite eyelets, to produce an oval composite eyelet, with a wide range of applications, from clothing to accessories and shoes, including safety. Assembly is always quick and precise, applied in a single cold stroke on automatic eyeletting machines. The intrinsic features of the material are the same as those of the round eyelet and offer the same customisation possibilities”. A further challenge that Hawai Italia has won thanks to its vocation for innovation, the mastery of materials and technologies, which has allowed it to offer the market another absolute novelty. Hawai eyelets offer a wide range of advanced items with different colours, fluo, transparencies, and more, and can finally guarantee an innovative and fashion design. Thus responding to the needs of today’s market which increasingly looks to the aesthetics of the product, as well as to functionality.

Evoluzione negli occhielli in composito, ora anche ovali AZIENDA SPECIALIZZATA NELLA PRODUZIONE DI ACCESSORI PER LA CALZATURA, HAWAI ITALIA È UN PUNTO DI RIFERIMENTO PER IL SETTORE GRAZIE AL COSTANTE SVILUPPO DI INNOVAZIONI.

CONSTANT QUALITY, RELIABILITY AND SERVICE. THE ADDED VALUE OF LUIGI CARNEVALI FOR SAFETY FOOTWEAR. Is it possible to know the market better than those who have been operating there for more than 100 years? This is the case of Luigi Carnevali, which has been offering the world of footwear, leather goods and clothing solutions for over a century to “keep fashion proposals in shape”. And not just fashion! For many years, Carnevali has in fact been offering a vast range of Thermo and Self-adhesive reinforcements to support leather, textile and synthetic shoes, customising each reference according to the customer’s requests (different finishing, water-repellent and fireretardant treatments ...). As in the case of Cofra, the undisputed leader in the field of Safety shoes, which for its KARMA YELLOW has chosen Carnevali’s JERSEY reinforcements. The shoe made from 60% pet ecological fabric, is water repellent and uses reinforcements able to provide the correct structure maintaining it over time. “Using Luigi Carnevali products in our collections means being sure to have a constant product quality over time. This does not just ensure a perfect pair of shoes at the end of the process, but it also reassures us during the production phase, because we know that we will have no problems and that, in case of issues, we would receive skilled and prompt assistance from Carnevali”, confirms Cofra. Because the Italian company is not just at the forefront in the qualitative reliability of the products, but also in the service. Which means extreme customisation and care in following the customer, who can provide his own materials and indications, and receive in exchange various coupling tests with different types of reinforcements, tested inside Carnevali’s laboratories, to then choose the one deemed most suitable to one’s needs. Or it also means assistance in terms of logistics: Carnevali, in fact, is able to keep reinforcements at home and manage the warehouse of its customers and then provide them with a prompt and punctual delivery whenever they request it (order received in the morning and shipped in the afternoon). “We manage to maintain a high product and service level, also thanks to companies like Cofra that always aim for excellence and claim to work with partners that allow them to excel in every market”, points out Carnevali.

Fabrics by Lenzi Egisto, the innovation liked by the market UPPERS WITH DIFFERENTIATED ZONES, SEAMLESS TECHNOLOGIES AND RECYCLED FIBRES TO OFFER TARGETED SOLUTIONS FOR SAFETY AND SPORT On the market for over a century, Lenzi Egisto by FF has been offering innovative fabrics resulting from the constant research of its laboratories and internal departments. The large number of patents and trademarks filed over the years testifies to the commitment of a company that has chosen to be at the forefront of sectors where the highest technical requirements are needed. Currently one of the leading technologies of the Tuscan industrial group born in 1898 is called PERSPAIR®. Jacquard fabrics made with this technique have areas with different features and performances according to the needs of the various sectors. As for the uppers of mountain footwear, for example, the toe area offers high resistance to abrasion, the lateral parts above the sole are particularly resistant to cuts (when used for crampons, for example in the case of trekking shoes), while the part near the lacing is more breathable. “All made in one single seamless piece which results in a much more resistant shoe, because as we know, the stitching is always the weakest point of each product. This way, we solve many problems both in the safety sector and in sports shoes”, explains Roberto Fenzi. “Our seamless technology does not involve a knit that breaks easily but an alternative weaving technique that offers superior strength”. REPET, is a line of eco-sustainable fabrics, which uses fibres obtained from the recycling of plastic containers, industrial waste and scraps of sweaters and fabrics. Given that the recycled PET yarn has medium-low tenacity features, in order to meet the requests for higher mechanical properties, the Tuscan company has developed REPET Reinforced, a line of fabrics where high tenacity yarns are used in the warp (for 50 %), the structural part of the product, leaving the simple recycled PET just as a filler for the texture. The result is a high-performance product that meets the requirements of sports and safety shoes. “This solution - explains Fenzi - represents an ideal compromise between sustainability and the high performance requirement”. Among the novelties of Lenzi we have to mention SPORTAIR which solves a very important problem also in the safety shoe, that is the breaking in the plug area due to the repeated stresses of those who work on their knees for example. The use of monofilament fishing lines gives the fabric excellent mechanical performance while offering great lightness and maximum breathability. Lenzi Egisto’s success on the market is testified by the numbers. “Despite the pandemic, in 2020 we recorded a small increase while in 2021 we will close with +52%. What is our secret? We try to give concrete answers to customer requests by working on constant innovation”, concludes Roberto Fenzi.

From Elachem an increasingly green polyurethane THE COMPANY OF VIGEVANO IS ONE OF THE MAJOR EUROPEAN PRODUCERS OF POLYESTER Lightweight and highly resistant to abrasion, with excellent physical/mechanical properties, polyurethane (or rather polyurethane systems) is the ideal material for the production of soles of any shape able to meet even the highest technical requirements. For this reason it is widely used in all sectors of the footwear sector: from fashion to trekking, from sport to safety. The Italian company Elachem based in Vigevano is one of the major European producers of polyester (one of the PU components) and polyurethane systems, which with its subsidiary Epaflex, is able to meet a vast variety of requests. What is the market trend at the end of this year? “We cannot complain - replies Marco Valieri, Elachem’s sales manager - in 2021 we obtained the same results as in 2019, the pre-pandemic year, but we have opened a very significant range of projects that makes us look to the future with confidence. Our secret? The flexibility that comes from the fact that we are producers of raw material, giving us an important advantage over our competitors, especially in times like these where planning is particularly difficult for everyone. Moreover, we are witnessing the return to Europe of some productions previously delocalised to Asia and this creates new work ”. In terms of material, what are the market demands? “Today customers request recycled or bio-based materials, two areas that we are following very closely. On one side, we are developing a project that provides for the collection and re-circulation of our production waste and those of our customers with the Zero Landfill objective. On the other side, we have already developed a polyurethane of BIO origin, composed of 70% organic component; for us this is still a niche market but in clear growth, on which we will continue to conduct research”. Any new projects? “We are about to become the major polyester producers in Europe thanks to an expansion of internal production facilities”, concludes Valieri.

More and more green lines for Tentoes AN OFFER RANGING FROM “PLASTIC FREE” SNEAKERS TO MILITARY BOOTS AND A STRATEGY BASED ON RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT CHARACTERISE THE PORTUGUESE BRAND Tentoes Professional is the brand dedicated to safety shoes created in 2019 by the Portuguese group Carité which boasts thirty years of experience in the footwear sector. The attention to the environment is one of the pillars of this brand’s strategy which translates into the choice of using as much as possible components and raw materials of natural origin, often obtained from the recycling of preferably biodegradable production waste, and by maintaining production at local level to reduce CO2 emissions and favour suppliers who can help reduce water and energy consumption. All this obviously after designing a product that focuses on worker safety by combining design, technology and compliance with the most stringent regulatory requirements as evidenced by the appropriate certifications. One of the most interesting lines developed by Tentoes is called Plastic Free and offers a sneaker with upper in leather or water-repellent suede, steel or aluminum toe cap, anti-perforation insole in Kevlar and outsole in non-slip recycled rubber that resists temperatures up to 300 degrees. The vaguely vintage design is instead the focus of the Retro Sneaker line which offers boots with upper in water-repellent suede and inserts in cordura with internal insole in recycled, antistatic and antibacterial material and an external sole in recycled nitrile rubber with double density Eva midsole which ensures superior wet grip. Attention to the environment also translates into the offer of packaging in compostable materials designed to optimise warehouse spaces. Among the latest news there is also a line of military boots in waterproof leather with a heat resistant sole.

Ama.Gusberti’s propensity to innovate is renewed thanks to the new ownership structure THE COMPANY, ALTHOUGH MEDIUM IN SIZE, IS PERCEIVED BY THE BEST NAMES IN THE FOOTWEAR SECTOR AS AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION, CAPABLE OF PROVIDING A COMPLETE PACKAGE OF SOLUTIONS AND MACHINERY You have to go back to 1946 to find the first traces left by the Gusberti family in the production of polyurethane processing machines. And then you have to wait 40 years for the first generational change that takes place in 1986 in favour of Giovanni Maragnano and Elena Gusberti who take over the Ama company and, continuing their commitment to polyurethane machines, give life to Ama Gusberti. Other decades pass, studded with various successes and many systems sold all over the world, when the passing of the baton is needed. Fresh energies come into play and in particular the STEFANO GRECO enthusiasm of Stefano Greco who, thanks to the collaboration with the Maragnano - Gusberti family, finds himself in just a few years and after some organisational steps, to represent 80% of the property. Right here starts Ama.Gusberti’s present and future. What idea guided your entry into society? “I realised that it had become necessary and fundamental to produce more complex machines that could meet the needs of a mature clientele, which in turn had to respond to the new demands of an increasingly demanding market in terms of quality and performance”. The result was the development of some extremely innovative patents... “Yes. My passion for this work and for innovation and the great competence of the whole team, has allowed us to develop interesting and useful innovations for the sector. We started with a mould holder extractor of technical items, and then returned to footwear with the brushless injection mould holder, for a complete

automatism of the machine. Then we created the machine with orbital mould holder that allows you to obtain soles with a quality level that has never been reached before through low density printing. And we don’t stop here: other patents are still pending”. What vision comes under your interpretation of the company? “A vision that places innovation at the centre, an attitude that must permeate the company as a whole. Because only with an innovative mindset your are forced to never stop, to always search for new solutions and different applications. It is a commitment not to wallow in what has been done, but to search what can still be done”. How do you see the footwear sector evolving? “The footwear world is becoming increasingly more technological: fabrics, materials, machinery and work processes are transforming a sector characterised by a strong manual skill in a sector connotated by a growing technical capacity. Shoe factories are being transformed into companies where technology finds ever more space, with large investments both in machinery and industrial culture”. Why invest in the innovations you propose, especially in such a difficult time? “The crisis in logistics and material supply of the last two years has accelerated the great fragility of the production system, the devastating dependence on foreign markets, as well as the excessive subordination of companies to external factors. We believe that some work phases, both in terms of quality and respect of deadlines, should and must, where possible, return to the company”.

Frasson: we give life to waste without losing quality THE COMPANY OF TREVISO HAS DEVELOPED NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO RECYCLE RUBBER AND POLYURETHANE WHILE MAINTAINING HIGH PERFORMANCE. CARLO FRASSON TALKS TO US ABOUT THE E-COMPOUND, POD SKIN AND ECOBOND SYSTEMS There are many innovations developed by the Frasson sole factory which presents itself to the market with new lines of products and materials in the name of recycling and sustainability. “During the lockdown we finally had time to fine-tune some technologies we had in the drawer allowing us to renew our product lines”, tells us Carlo Frasson, exponent of the fifth generation of this beautiful family business in the province of Treviso which three years ago celebrated the first 100 years of activity. “The first novelty is called e-compound - explains the young manager - It is a compound consisting of a part of recycled and selectively devulcanised rubber to keep its features unaltered and of which our subsidiary Rubbermac was the first one in Europe to obtain the GRS certification on a high performance rubber tread”. For a couple of years, all the rubber scraps produced at Rubbermac have been recovered and recycled, thus avoiding an environmental impact of about 70-100 tons per year. What the company does not use internally is put back on the market and reused in other sectors. The e-compound technology also affects polyurethane waste. “By using the polyurethane deriving from our pre-chilled and/or machine washes and reusing it in form of ground material inside film-coated PU wedges or TPU shells, we can reduce the production of this waste by 5-10%, obtaining a young and dynamic product”, explains Frasson. The Treviso-based company has solved the problem of the performance loss of recycled polyurethane by developing a patented technology called POD Skin which consists in covering the outer surface of the wedges with a TPU film to prevent material degradation. “With the POD Skin system - explains Frasson - the recycled polyurethane only acts as a filler, to give comfort, lightness and thermal insulation to the product. The PU filler is coated with special films and TPU shells, thus ensuring resistance and protection to the midsole”. Speaking of Frasson’s commitment to sustainability, we also would like to mention another technology that is not new but which fully falls within this sphere. The Ecobond system of which Frasson is the exclusive licensee in Europe for sole assembly. Very briefly, we are talking about an adhesive thermoplastic film that is directly applied on the different components of the sole during the moulding phase. “The shoe factory has to manage a basically already glued sole which will only need a simple reactivation of the surface at about 70/80° C before proceeding with the pressing/assembly phase on the upper”.
Thanks to this system, operations such as carding, primer applications and/or washing with cleaner and glueing are eliminated, with interesting economic and environmental benefits. There are no problems in terms of sealing. “The system is already in use to mount mountaineering shoes suitable for climbing 8,000 metres peaks”, assures Carlo Frasson.

Frasson: ridiamo vita agli scarti senza perdere in qualità L’AZIENDA TREVIGIANA HA SVILUPPATO NUOVE TECNOLOGIE PER RICICLARE LA GOMMA E IL POLIURETANO MANTENENDO PERFORMANCE ELEVATE.

Aloft launches the Sphair concept and SolesTainable THE PORTUGUESE SOLE FACTORY FOCUSES ON AIR BUBBLE TECHNOLOGY AND RECYCLING OF WASTE MATERIALS The result of extensive research carried out in collaboration with a Spanish university and a technology centre, Sphair is a new sole concept based on an air bubble technology that offers a great variety of benefits in terms of comfort, shock absorption and extreme lightness. The secret of the new sole developed by the Portuguese company Aloft is given by a combination of elements: an internal layer with spherical cells that absorb the pressure exerted by the foot when walking, offering a cushioning effect and an external part composed of single studs arranged in different ways, which ensure superior grip, excellent traction control and a unique multi-bounce effect. Sphair has been designed to be used in various fields, in sports such as trekking, but also in everyday life for both women and men. To offer a practical demonstration of the value of this technology, at the last A+A security fair, a technological station was set up on the stand of Aloft and managed by a German movement specialist (Molibso) who, using sensors and a special software, analysed the pressure distribution under the sole of the foot while walking (on a special platform), returning a colour image with the geography of the major pressure points. The system clearly showed that footwear equipped with Sphair soles allow uniform distribution of the load ensuring greater comfort. Another interesting novelty presented by Aloft in Düsseldorf concerns, instead, sustainability or rather the reuse of waste. This is the “SolesTainable” technology which concerns the production of rubber, Pu and TPU soles with recycled raw materials together with other waste materials such as plastic, leather or cork suitably treated and transformed. The theme related to the recovery of waste is of great concern to the company: “We are thinking of creating a new company exclusively dedicated to the recovery and recycling of materials for which we would like to find partners who share the same vision”, announces Pedro Castro, CEO of Aloft.

Miran launches the Eco&Green line THE COMPANY FROM APULIA PRODUCES A WIDE RANGE OF COMPONENTS FOR SAFETY FOOTWEAR, NOW ALSO WITH PARTIALLY BIO-BASED RAW MATERIALS Present on the market since the 60’s, Miran based in Barletta has established itself over time as a leader in the production of thermoplastic accessories and thermoformed and polyurethane removable insoles. What makes this company from Apulia unique is the vastness of its offering, destined in particular for the safety footwear market. Microinjection on labels, drawcords, rapid systems for unfastening, toecaps and TPU heel counters, plantar arches and shanks, direct over-injections and under-injections on leathers and fabrics, and PU insoles enriched with gel islands: those who look to the world of MIRAN, will see every technical and aesthetical need satisfied and transformed into a high quality accessory both in terms of function and look. All Miran products are strictly Made in Italy and created in the production facilities of Barletta by a highly specialised workforce thanks to machines and materials coming from the very best partner companies in the sector. At the same time, maintaining internal control of the entire production cycle allows the company to be able to offer its customers a broad and extremely flexible service, with certain and rapid delivery times and without the imposition of high minimum order quantities. One key strength of the company lies in its ability to offer special customisation services: starting from a graphic sketch, a technical need or from a specific aesthetical desire expressed by the end customer, it is possible to create and define a new product thanks to the collaboration offered by its own technicians. These are the origins of labels that reproduce the customer’s logo, drawcords with special designs and curves, inserts with metallic meshes that guarantee the breathability of the product, chromatic matchings and the three-dimensionality of uppers directly over-injected onto leathers and fabrics, shaped TPU toecaps that perfectly “embrace” the mould of the customer, and constant research onto increasingly high performance polyurethane foams in terms of carrying capacity and resistance to impacts. Among the novelties present in the collection, we find the ECO&GREEN line. This series of accessories and removable insoles partially replaces raw materials of petrochemical origins with bio-based raw materials coming from renewable sources. A sustainabile line that confirms Miran’s commitment to offering technologically evolved solutions that also respect the natural eco-system.

From Portugal… all over the world THE INTERNATIONALISATION PROGRAMME COORDINATED BY SELECTIVA MODA TAKES LUSITANIAN COMPANIES TO THE MAIN TRADE FAIRS IN THE TEXTILE, FASHION AND SAFETY SECTORS The participation of Portuguese companies in A+A 2021 was substantial. In addition to many individual exhibitors, at the Düsseldorf fair for safety there was a collective coordinated by Selectiva Moda (ASM), the association born thirty years ago thanks to a partnership between associations of Portuguese textile and clothing manufacturers aimed at promoting exports. Within the framework of the initiatives for internationalisation coordinated by ASM, the “From Portugal” project stands out, which is partially financed by European funds and favours the participation of Lusitanian companies in the main international events. Also the Lusitanian collective present at A+ A 2021 was under the umbrella of From Portugal with innovative proposals for the safety sector, which this year consisted of about ten companies, including two brands specialised in the production of safety shoes: Wock and Forever. Manuel Serrão, an event organiser but also a well-known TV presenter and commentator, coordinates ASM’s promotional programme. “This project is very important for Portuguese companies - he explains - just think that in 2019, the pre-pandemic year, we accompanied 400 companies in a thousand different events around the world”. The calendar for the first half of 2022 is equally busy, with very large participations in leading trade fairs such as Première Vision, Heimtextil, Pitti Uomo and Pitti Bimbo. What is the strength of Portuguese companies today? “In addition to a good quality-price ratio, our companies stand out for their commitment to innovation and sustainability, as seen in the latest edition of Modtissimo, the exhibition held twice a year in Porto, and that last October saw the launch of many textile products with a green vocation. Our companies are far ahead on circular economy and environmental issues also thanks to the iTech Green Circle project which has strongly stimulated research and sustainable innovation within the sector”.

Lewer, the 100% Italian work shoe THE SHOE FACTORY BASED IN THE CAMPANIA REGION HAS LAUNCHED THE NEW SKILL LINE IN NUBUCK LEATHER Berlin, Tokyo, Lisbon, Rio ... The styles of the new safety shoe line “Skill” launched by the Lewer shoe factory have all names of cities just like the protagonists of the famous television series “The House of Paper” who actually face quite demanding – let’s say working - situations. Distinguished by the design of an arrow, the Skill line presents noteworthy technical features, starting from the upper made of three different materials, each with a precise functionality, where beautiful water-repellent nubuck 8.2 thick leather is protagonist, to pass to the three-density sole which, in addition to meeting specific technical requirements for various categories, ensures the user a high level of comfort and lightness. The lining, toecap and insole are designed ad hoc to guarantee protection and comfort in every situation. All made with a captivating and always up-to-date design that offers pleasant material and chromatic combinations. “We are proud to be able to say that our production is still entirely made in Italy, just as all the materials we use are Italian” , explain the managers of this company located in Campania and founded in 1987 on the initiative of Gennaro Scotto. “Over the years, as our competitors relocated production around the world, we have stood firm both to protect our local workforce and to continue providing a high quality level of the final product. Fortunately, the market has proved us right and over time we have managed to grow steadily”, explains his son Antonio, who is responsible for pattern and product development. Also known for its efficient service and reliability in deliveries, the footwear company that operates in Colliano (Salerno) today boasts a large production capacity and a vast product catalogue that covers the main specialist categories like boots in polyurethane which have been added recently.

More sustainable fabrics from Accoppiatura Vigevanese THE COMPANY PRESENTS INNOVATIVE PROPOSALS OBTAINED FROM PET RECYCLED YARNS On the market since 1977 Accoppiatura Vigevanese offers various production lines that meet the most different requests such as adhesive and thermo-adhesive coatings, lamination with polyurethane foams, needle-punched “non-woven” fabrics and many other types of materials. “The safety sector is very important to us since it represents about 70% of the production destined for the footwear sector - explains Massimo Rodolfo - We are able to satisfy a great variety of requests ranging from the economic up to the medium and technical segment”. In addition to Europe, over the years the company built part of its production in Asia where it selected highly technologically advanced suppliers who ensure significant volumes and constant quality at competitive prices. “Today we too have of course to face the increase in raw materials and transport costs, but thanks to a good organsation that has been refined over time, we are still able to be competitive”. Aware of the importance of innovation in a sustainable key, Accoppiatura Vigevanese has just presented new fabrics for uppers and linings made with Repreve® brand recycled polyester yarns. An eco-friendly fibre obtained from the recycling of plastic bottles that ensures an excellent quality level and good resistance.

Pointex, the fabrics of the future FROM RECYCLED POLYESTER TO GRAPHENE, MANY INNOVATIONS IN THE TUSCAN COMPANY’S PROPOSALS A great variety of technical fabrics for uppers (both knit and shuttle) but also many solutions for linings, antiperforation midsoles and insoles, all obviously compliant with the specific regulations of safety shoes. The wide offer is one of Pointex’s trump cards that make this Tuscan company the point of reference for many shoe factories that find it convenient to be able to rely on a single supplier. Thanks to the sister company LTA, which produces a great variety of substrates such as felts, Pointex fabrics can be supplied already coupled on the basis of the specifications provided by the customer. If offers a customised service which is also very popular, thanks to the internal technological equipment, which allows you to develop designs on customer request or particular colour combinations, giving life to an exclusive product. Among its most successful lines this season, we find high tenacity fabrics made from recycled polyester starting from NewLife™ yarn produced by Sinterama, a specialised company that guarantees the GRS certification of the entire supply chain starting from the collection of PET bottles within a radius of 100 kilometres. Very interesting are also the graphene fabrics that offer particular characteristics of thermal conductivity. As known, graphene is considered one of the most innovative materials available, the thinnest in the world but with the hardness of diamond. Its properties include the proven ability to absorb and dissipate heat and flexibility and it is precisely for these features that interesting applications in the footwear sector are being studied. Among the novelties there are also very high resistance fabrics with anti-cut protection from chain saw and antiperforation foils for insoles; in this case, the Tuscan company has anticipated the regulations that require resistant nails with 3.5 mm diameter tips.
