#VictoriaxDesigual: an 80’s-styled essence of summer
TWO OF THE MOST SYMBOLIC BRANDS FROM THE IBERIAN PENINSULA HAVE DESIGNED A LIMITED EDITION CAPSULE COLLECTION THAT EMBODIES THE HIGH SPIRITS AND SIMPLICITY OF SUMMERTIME IN THE 80’S. Victoria, the legendary brand of English-styled canvas sneakers launched in La Rioja in 1950, and Desigual, the brand from Barcelona with its colourful Mediterranean style, have in fact collaborated to give life to a capsule collection that recaptures the genuine essence of Spanish summers in the 80’s, with their sun, heat, festivals, kiosks on the beach, freedom and complete absence of time constraints. The three sneaker models in a limited edition are lightweight with a strong personality, and just like the Spanish summer, they combine simplicity with high spirits. And naturally, production is 100% in Spain, because summer 2020 is a summer that stays close to home. We have the ‘#1 Estate in the village’, a typical slip-on sneaker renewed by throwbacks to the 80’s, characterised by red polka dots, denim, the first Desigual logo and the ‘humans’ of the brand creating the symbol for equality by holding hands with each other. Next is ‘#2 Estate Balearic’, the more classic and popular vision of the Victoria, which is proposed however in a total white version with the Desigual logo in a XXL format. Finally, there is ‘#3 Estate in BCN’, a slip-on with wedges and D-shaped polka dots, where the black print on a white background is ideal for matching with any look.

#VictoriaxDesigual: essenza dell’estate anni 80 DUE DEI BRAND PIÙ EMBLEMATICI DELLA PENISOLA IBERICA FIRMANO UNA CAPSULE COLLECTION IN EDIZIONE LIMITATA CHE INCARNA L’ALLEGRIA E LA SEMPLICITÀ DELLE ESTATI ANNI ‘80.

Thierry Rabotin launches The Fifty-12 Project
Thierry Rabotin lancia The Fifty-12 Project THE NEW LINE OF SNEAKERS LOOKS TO ELEGANCE, COMFORT, AND THE UNMISTAKABLE STYLE OF THE PARABIAGO COLLEZIONI BRAND
LA NUOVA LINEA DI SNEAKER PUNTA SULL'ELEGANZA, IL CONFORT E LO STILE INCONFONDIBILE DEL MARCHIO DI PARABIAGO COLLEZIONI
It’s called The Fifty-12, the project with which Thierry Rabotin would like to merge the elegance and unmistakable TB style with a one-of-a-kind comfort, to convey a new sneaker concept to its fans. The line is characterised by sophisticated materials and striking shapes, a mood that would like to be elegantly casual and passepartout, as well as suitable for every occasion. However, the difference is made by the Poron Slow Rebound insole, the bona fide crowning glory of these sneakers, which guarantees a never-before-seen level of comfort: produced in state-of-the-art memory foam, it ensures an unequalled level of shock absorption. Accordingly, The Fifty-12 manages to combine the comfort of athletic shoes with an elegant high-end sneaker. The company explains the concept: “It’s an evolution of TR, which sinks its roots into the brand’s philosophy. The extremely soft lambskin lining is the clearest confirmation of this, since it is the same one used in the main product line, as well as in the three blue lines that represent the three founders: Karl, Giovanna and, the dearly departed Thierry Rabotin. Our idea is that without history there can be no future. For us, it was unthinkable to not identify ourselves as a new branch of Thierry Rabotin, which will obviously grow and diversify from the original brand, both in terms of style and product type, but which is rooted in the certainty that our customers must always have an unequalled sense of comfort and the ever-present feeling of walking barefoot”.

During the summer of 2019 we celebrated the desire of mankind to conquer space, to live beyond gravity, to reach those goals of which today Artificial Intelligence is probably an icon. The theme inspired the creation of the materials of ARSUTORIA’s VISION LAB, developed following the key concepts of the coming Spring/Summer 2021, embodied with creative genius by the collaboration between Arsutoria and some of the most important companies of the sector. They gave rise to completely innovative proposals, capable of bringing forth new ideas. Seamless materials (the only ones allowed in space) float in zero gravity thanks to soft and whimsical three-dimensional surfaces. Classic items are revitalised through coupling and laser processing, customising them carefully through applications, new pleats and contemporary material mixes. Increasingly more attention is dedicated to sustainability, referring to both the ecological issue (heat-sealing, water-based adhesives, natural colours), and productivity (reuse of archive materials, film applications that save resources compared to wet finishing…).

SAFETY IN LEATHER - FOOTWEAR MANUFACTORING Wor k p lac e a c c i d e n t s a n d health issues represent a serious problem all over the world. According to ILO (International Labour Organisation) data every year around 2.8 million workers die from occupational accidents and work-related diseases and more than 370 million others are injured. International concern over the issue is fairly low key due to a lack of information, which hampers the adoption of appropriate measures. Suitable conditions of work are necessary both to ensure long-term sustainable growth and to guarantee profits and manufacturing quality. The following paragraphs take a brief look at the historical background and then exam-
ine the European CE Marking approach.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The idea of protective measures for workers and some sort of social commission made its appearance among European manufacturers in the early 1800s, when the first timid steps were taken to introduce occupational health and safety measures. In 1919, a hundred years later, ILO was founded and adopted its first six conventions on this issue. Today the ILO has 178 member states and almost 200 conventions. Awareness on safety issues through technological and engineering, human factor, socialtechnical and organisational models gradually increased dur-

Directives and Technical Standards have been studied for each sector by specific Commissions and Workgroups, drawing on all the industrial expertise of EU member countries. The CE Machine Directive and Declaration of Conformity have played a particularly important role in fostering an open market for machinery, and goods in general, within the European Economic area.
SICUREZZA NELLE LAVORAZIONI PELLE-CALZATURE CONTESTO STORICO

The CE logo means that products conform to Essential Safety Requirements. Right from the inception of the design stage for machinery a careful risk analysis assessment is carried out to identify and solve any potential dangers during the machine’s assembling, transportation, installation, use, maintenance and dismantling.
THE ADVANTAGES OF APPLYING THE STANDARDS
• A reduction in production costs, plus interchangeability and operational coordination of products and services • A permanent incentive to innovate and compliance with legislation • Increased competition and free exchange among all countries adopting the standards • Respect for the environment and sustainable development
Over time these standards have proved to be tools for innovation and rationalisation in technical terms and a means to develop better company organisation. Their use guarantees: • Safety and prevention and better working conditions • Qualified organisation of processes and economies of scale
tema. Oggi l’OIL conta 178 Stati membri e quasi 200 convenzioni.

In the meantime ASSOMAC has developed the Technical Committee 201 “Leather and imitation leather goods and footwear manufacturing machinery – Safety” (Tab. 2). ASSOMAC runs training courses in Italian industrial areas for

CONCLUSIONS Many survey have highlighted how the application of safety standards have shown that they can be a strategic resource for enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized. Machinery shut-down because of accidents involving operators or due to poor maintenance negatively affects production output and quality of finished products. Furthermore the risk of losing

CONCLUSIONI
Tab. 2

A material with extraordinary properties that, as it can be read in the company’s statement, “conveys new life to colour with a fullness, intensity and durability never before achieved by any other glazing process or superficial treatment”. The exquisite quality of Mirage is immediately apparent at first sight: it has a unique look both in its glossy and matte version and is pleasurable to the touch. It also resists impacts and chemical agents, is antiallergenic and biocompatible. As with many of the products of Lanfranchi, Mirage can even be customised, offering extensive expressive possibilities to designers. These are the features that make Mirage an accessory that conveys added value to luxury bags. Since 1987, Lanfranchi Spa has represented the purest expression of Made in Italy. All of its semi-finished products like ribbons, sliders, and most of the machinery used are made in the productive facility located in Palazzolo sull'Oglio (Bergamo), with fully integrated production cycles that are carefully monitored. The company is also fully compliant with Italian and European regulations concerning occupational safety standards and environmental safeguarding, with best business practices that allowed it to obtain ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certifications for galvanizing and dyeing processes. With Mirage, Lanfranchi Spa underlines its mission to offer excellence in zippers through exquisite finishes and a high level of personalisation.

CONCERIA SUPERIOR, AZIENDA TOSCANA FONDATA NEL 1962 CHE DA OLTRE 50 ANNI OPERA NEL SETTORE DELLE PELLI DI LUSSO PER L’ALTA MODA, PRESENTA LA SUA PRE-COLLECTION FW21-22
Today the Tuscan company is more ready than ever for change and promptly develops a strategy to not miss out on the appointment with the FW21-22 season. Thus, Superior guarantees the level of excellence that has always distinguished it, not only in terms of product, but also in terms of customer service, conceiving “haute couture” samples. The FW21-22 pre-collection is very focused and concentrated, almost in a “sartorial” manner, on the direct and specific needs of each fashion house. It consists of real ad hoc micro-samples comparable to “haute couture” collections featuring “classic” leather made according to the new “back to handmade” philosophy.

The collection offers a range of 4 main colours: miel (goose beak yellow), ebony (very deep chocolate), deep carmin (deep carmine) and dauphin (cyan blue with a hint of grey) with a contrasting bronze hue, a very intense, warm and sparkling shade with special light effects. There is no shortage of the signature Superior must-haves, very classic calf hides such as Vittoria, Brise, Lady Plongé, Femme, Philadelphia, Levanto, Avenue, and half calf hides such as Galles, Essenza, brushed calf hides, Old School, Raffaello and classic Superior calf hides such as Atena, Brezza, Dan, Giove, Papier and Glass. Despite the new method of sampling, the pre-collection offers a selection of fashion pieces, even though the current trend is a “classic” one interpreted in a contemporary key. Superior also introduces new hides for the trendiest part of the sample collection. They are bright but without excesses, with balanced atmospheres, while having clear references to colours and textures from the 70s and 80s. We come to the process for creating a Superior “handmade” hide through a few but precise processing steps: conditioning with the spraying of water on the hides, up to creating a suitable humidity rate that conforms to the next step of ironing, a very delicate operation that refines the grain of the leather. The buffing action is carried out by expert, skilled and qualified personnel through the application of diluted aniline, to create shading effects on the grain of the leather, giving it depth and transparency. The boarding is then carried out, a process that uses a cork board to create movement on the grain of the leather, giving it interesting characteristics thanks to the workmanship carried out by expert and skillful hands.

SOLES & HEELS Lightness, boldness and sustainability A summer that speaks to us with a high level of attention on the lightness of soles and a design that still looks to important volumes above all in sneakers. At the same time, it also speaks to us of sustainability, of a desire for natural materials like rubber and natural rubber, or recycled materials that proclaim their style through characteristic blendings of colour. The athletic shoe is once again the leading protagonist of the season in a running and fashion version with important volumes, raised profiles that enliven the silhouette, and three-dimensional tread with inclusions of colour and occasional transparencies. There are then decorative graphic elements on the trim. For her, also the sandal and platform play an important role in this season, with high micro or wicker outsoles and a design that reevokes the Eighties. Lots of irony and glitter are present in Thunit soles and in heels and wedges that shine with metallic glints and striking designs. For him, free time is characterised by a striking mix between classic styles and sporty outsoles or by a return to natural materials. Our array of proposals finishes up with the kids’ universe, where performance and look meet up in a mix that is oriented towards playtime.

Grip-fast shoes inspired by the art of Kirigami RESEARCHERS FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT) HAVE DEVELOPED A NEW MATERIAL FOR SOLES, INSPIRED BY THE JAPANESE ART OF PAPER FOLDING AND CUTTING, WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF SLIP RESISTANCE. As often happens, it is the past that suggests the direction to take for the innovation of the future, and this time it has once again happened for an important discovery relative to the world of materials, and in particular, materials for soles. It’s a project presented on Nature Biomedical Engineering magazine and realised by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Mit), which has led to the development of a new material meant to coat the soles, which has been inspired by the structure of Kirigami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding and cutting. MIT researchers in fact have confirmed that this extremely ancient technique is capable of changing our friction with the ground on a vast number of different surfaces, including ice. From here, the idea of applying it to the development of a coating for grip-fast footwear: the coating is characterised by patterns of spikes with a concave shape inserted on a sheet of plastic or metal, which increase the friction with the ground in an extremely dynamic way. The novelty of this type of surface is that there is a shape transition from a two-dimensional flat surface to a three-dimensional shape: the coating remains flat and smooth while the wearer is standing but pops out during the movement of walking. “You can use those elements to control friction, because the sharp needles can pop in and out based on the stretch that you apply to the material – comments Giovanni Traverso, researcher at MIT and among the authors of the study -. It is our belief that the Kirigami coatings applied to the soles of shoes can help prevent the risk of slipping and falling in a vast range of different environments”. A series of tests conducted with volunteers highlighted that this technique generates a friction that is 20% to 35% higher than the friction generated by the shoes alone. Without a doubt, it’s an important innovation that will revolutionise the world of footwear, including especially those for the sports and healthcare industries, for elderly people, but above all for the safety industry, ensuring a safe and reliable shoe in work environments characterised by wet or oily surfaces. The next evolutions of the study aim to identify the best way for applying the coating to the sole, evaluating whether it’s better to directly incorporate it or use it as a separate accessory, which can be applied only when needed.

Scarpe ad alto grip ispirate all’arte del kirigami I RICERCATORI DEL MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT) HANNO MESSO A PUNTO UN NUOVO MATERIALE PER SUOLE, ISPIRATO ALL'ARTE DELLA CARTA GIAPPONESE, DALLE ELEVATE PROPRIETÀ ANTISCIVOLO.

Desma opens “The Factory of Future” THE NEW INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX COMBINES AND STREAMLINES PRODUCTION, LOGISTICS, AND COMMERCIAL OFFICES, SO IT IS ABLE TO COPE WITH THE COMPANY’S FUTURE GROWTH “The Factory of the future” of Desma was completed just a year ago – with the first stone laid back in June 2019 – without ever going over budget. The official inauguration, cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, was postponed to 2021, so that both the brand new headquarters and the company’s 75th anniversary could be celebrated together with a major event. The investment in the new site will allow Desma, worldwide leader in plants and machinery for industrial footwear production, to reinforce its position in the highly competitive scenario of the global market: “We optimised our productive processes and logistics to reinforce our position on the market – confirms CEOs Klaus Freese and Christian Decker – From intake of the individual parts, storage, surface treatment, processing and final assembly right through to delivery of the finished machines, we have now gathered our core processes under one roof.” The Factory of the Future, located at Desmastrasse 1, extends across 12 thousand square metres of space, with three bays, as well as a three-storey office building with a total floor area of 4,500 square metres. The new complex will allow for greater efficiency when compared to the old site, while reflecting modern workflow principles. The project considered not only the need to create a pleasurable and efficient working environment for employees, but also the ability to eventually cope with Desma’s future growth. The new production and office spaces should be fully up and running in record time, for the end of July. Next to the Factory of the Future, the Desma technology park will remain at its former address of Desmastrasse 3/5, which is also home to a branch of Leibniz University Hannover.

The impact of Covid-19 on textile companies ACCORDING TO SISTEMA MODA ITALIA, THE TEXTILE, FASHION AND ACCESSORY SECTOR IS ESTIMATED TO LOSE FROM 7 TO 9 BILLION EUROS FOR 2020 (DATA BY CONFINDUSTRIA MODA’S RESEARCH CENTRE, MAY 2020) The survey carried out by the Research Centre of Confindustria Moda provides a disheartening picture of the first quarter of 2020 for the Textile-Clothing industry with the outbreak of the health emergency. Participation in this survey saw a greater involvement of upstream operators in the supply chain, equal to 65%, compared to those positioned downstream (35%), an important figure for data analysis purposes. With reference to the main results of the survey, due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 emergency, approximately 95% of the companies surveyed envisaged the use of social shock absorbers, in 65% of cases, involving more than 80% of employees; 80% of the companies surveyed activated smart working practices, where the type of activity allowed it; 42% of the companies surveyed experienced a drop in turnover of between “20% and 50%”; 28% recorded a drop between “10% and 20%”, while the remaining 7% recorded a drop of “more than 50%”. The average drop in turnover was 25.4% (compared to an average of 36.2% for Textiles-Fashion-Clothing). The most significant certain figure at the moment is the loss recorded in the first quarter for Textiles and Clothing turnover, equal to € 3.5 billion, compared to the same period in 2019. 49% of the companies surveyed recorded a drop in orders between “20% and 50%” compared to the same period last year; while, 29% recorded a drop between “10% and 20%.” A specific analysis is that concerning T&C exports; the current scenario of deep uncertainty and volatility in international markets has led to a theoretical assessment of an expected drop in exports of about 20%, amounting to € 6 billion, which would lead to an overall loss in turnover of about € 7-9 billion, data similar to that reported by the sector during the 2009-2013 crisis. For about 90% of the companies surveyed, the priorities of interventions by the Government are measures to guarantee liquidity and social shock absorbers, with possible developments of recovery or otherwise, of possible further setbacks in the rest of the current year.

The future challenge WE SPOKE TO THREE LEADING ITALIAN MANUFACTURERS OF TEXTILES AND SYNTHETIC FABRICS – SIRETESSILE, LANIFICIO BIGAGLI AND ITALIAN CONVERTER – TO DISCUSS SOME OF THE MOST URGENT ISSUES FACING THEM TODAY AFTER THE EMERGENCY HEALTH CRISIS LOCKDOWN How have you been working in the last few months, and what are your plans for the future both in terms of workflow and making your factory safe? Chiara Spinetta, marketing manager of Siretessile’s technical fabric division In this period, we have worked in a resolute and combative manner, while remaining alert and vigilant. The safety of the company has always been our strength and we have maintained the standard procedures, promptly enhancing and bringing them into line with the Covid regulations. Our priority is the safety of employees and the environment. In the future, we will organise our work to continue serving more sectors in order to differentiate production, and to offset any declines. Another strength that distinguishes us is the constant creation of innovative and sustainable products. Teodora Karazissis, one of the owners and Sales Manager of Italian Converter It has been a very difficult period for us, but we managed to keep our doors open, implementing the safety protocols immediately, sanitising the work areas with nitrogen, organising shifts and smart working. These measures were accompanied by research and investments in the production of materials for medical uses in different weights and types (fabrics for masks, gowns and so on), which will clearly continue in the future. Customer service was quickly reorganised. Despite the cancellation of some supplies, there were no interruptions in our work, but rather we were driven to do more, rolling up our sleeves immediately. Alessandro Raggi, Sales Department of Lanificio Bigagli With Lineapelle in September 2019 and the proposal of materials produced from certified raw material sources, a good production season was expected for the whole of 2020. The first two months showed an increase in turnover in all the markets in which we operate, but the advent of the Covid pandemic, unexpected and impossible to imagine and foresee, has drastically disrupted the objectives set and the projects in progress. The presence of our Ateco Code among those authorised to remain open allowed us to continue to work, albeit at a reduced pace, even in the two months of lockdown. The company only closed for a short period between 27 March and 10 April 2020, which was necessary to protect the health of its employees and their families and to understand what was actually happening around us and make immediate changes to the previous plans. We processed the orders received before the Covid period and, fortunately, acquired new requests after the lockdown. We still have to evaluate the possible scenarios for the months from September to December.

PHASE 2 What are the most important challenges you are facing at the moment? Chiara Spinetta, marketing manager of Siretessile’s technical fabrics division Today, the work is already a great challenge as many sectors have resumed with greater intensity and Siretessile has equipped itself to provide better services and to promptly react to the requests of customers. The most important challenge right now is to become even bigger, showing that every difficult moment can be transformed into an opportunity. Teodora Karazissis, one of the owners and Sales Manager of Italian Converter Right now, our priority is the research of materials for the Covid world, which has received positive feedback from our customers. It is important for us, now more than ever, to assist customers and bring them back to “normal” as much as possible, trying to be a valuable support and to offer our customers and collaborators what we do best: creativity, innovation, service and above all, partnership. This has always been our philosophy. Alessandro Raggi, Sales Department of Lanificio Bigagli The most important challenge is and will be to intercept the new “lifestyles and needs of people” in the new post-Covid era. We have all changed the way we do things, our habits and customs, some of them will return the same as in the pre-Covid period, others will disappear forever, giving each of us the freedom to organise our own space and experiment with new habits partially experienced in the lockdown period. For the current and upcoming seasons, the company has further raised the quality standard by investing in new sustainable products made in a circular economy, certifying processes and products with GRS and RWS certifications, implementing a “4Sustainability” protocol aimed at reducing non-compliant chemical substances in both the internal and external production processes, training staff on the new measures related to the protocol itself. This business policy has brought greater safety and better work environments.

MARKET In which markets do you think your product and textiles in general will have a better recovery?
APPEAL TO THE INSTITUTIONS Government and fashion entrepreneurs: what support is needed and what measures should be taken to help the supply chain and companies?
Chiara Spinetta, marketing manager of Siretessile’s technical textiles division Looking at the global scene, many countries are taking self-protection measures so that they do not have to depend entirely on markets that are geographically more distant from them. In addition, new restrictions have been introduced on freight traffic and investments, with borders that are closed to protect against the pandemic. We have also noticed this in our productions, especially in medical protection devices. We believe that the first markets to recover for exports will be those closest to the productions, so for Italy it will be the European countries. However, we shouldn’t forget about the countries that still do not have a know-how for internal production, and that we will therefore continue to serve.
Chiara Spinetta, marketing manager of Siretessile’s technical fabrics division The Government should listen more carefully to entrepreneurs, the same people who elected and trusted them. Entrepreneurs run their companies every day with great economic and social commitment, so it is only right that the Government shows some humility and turns to them to understand what they need, and to work together to develop support strategies. Vilfredo Pareto, 19th century Italian economist, starting from some considerations on national wealth formulated the “Pareto Principle” (also called the “Principle of Factor Sparsity”) which states that the majority of effects come from a limited number of causes, in a ratio of 80/20. That is, 80% of the results are the product of the work of 20%, and entrepreneurs fall into this category. Therefore, we believe that the Government should give priority to protecting the category of entrepreneurs for the good of the whole country.
Teodora Karazissis, one of the owners and Sales Manager of Italian Converter In my opinion, European countries will recover more quickly because they are more tied to fashion production (I am thinking of Italy, but also France and England) and because they have local productions of the highest level. In our own small way, the eco-sustainable line that we have now been producing for two seasons is in great demand. After the pandemic, there is even greater focus on the “green” world and the certifications that testify to this type of standard. Alessandro Raggi, Sales Department of Lanificio Bigagli At this moment, I would say that it is quite difficult to make any predictions, certainly in those markets where Covid-19 cases have receded, first and foremost Europe, and life has taken over part of the ordinary space. The fear of a possible new contagion still prevails in the air, combined with a job market dictated by layoff periods, significantly reduces the possibility of spending and the desire to buy non-essential products. The Textile/Apparel/Accessory sector sells goods where 30% of purchases are rational, while the other 70% are emotional when consumers are in a positive mood. I would say that at this particular moment, even primary textile goods become less necessary, let alone purchases made for emotional reasons. A positive figure in a climate of deep uncertainty stems from the need to rethink business by creating new “responsible” products. The months of closure have highlighted the critical issues that globalisation has generated, exploitation of resources, fake needs, propensity to forced spending, distraction and destruction of the surrounding world. The need to buy less and better could be a point in our favour.

Teodora Karazissis, one of the owners and Sales Manager of Italian Converter I hope that the Government acts quickly and gives concrete help: entrepreneurs must be listened carefully in order to get the pulse of the situation in the various regions and to be able to intervene where and when needed. Clearly, it would also help to have less bureaucratic labyrinths, aid for distribution and promotion abroad and job protection, for example, tax relief for hiring. Alessandro Raggi, Sales Department of Lanificio Bigagli In my opinion, the Italian government does not have the resources to solve the problem, and it must resort to extremely onerous loans, the costs of which would exclusively come out of the pockets of Italians. I believe that the only solution is for Europe to authorise the European Central Bank to print enough currency to cover the entire debt generated by this pandemic. Only by eliminating the loss of revenue experienced by companies during the months of production stoppage and by reopening can we hope for a return to a fairly normal life.

Sneakers good enough to ‘eat’! A TREND THAT COMES FROM AFAR, BUT WHICH HAS NEVER STOPPED ATTRACTING NEW ADMIRERS IS THAT OF ‘FOOD-INSPIRED SNEAKERS’, WHICH RANGE FROM PICKLES TO PIZZA AND ICE-CREAM, WITH PLAYFUL AND EXTREMELY UNIQUE GRAPHICS THAT MAKE COLLECTORS AND ENTHUSIASTS GO WILD The latest arrival is the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Ben & Jerry’s (2020), an immediate hit before it was even launched on the market, registering thousands of dollars in sales on various websites: a “chunky” version of the Dunk Low, created from the collaboration between the famous brand of sportswear Nike and Ben & Jerry's, the company in Vermont that has been conquering the world with its ice-creams since 1978. Characterising it are tones and textures that recall the classic packaging of Ben & Jerry's – so blue skies and cows grazing in green pastures -, while lively tie-dye motifs and bold graphics cover the insole and heel. The upper is a mix of materials, with a furry ‘cow’ print standing out on it, while on the heel we find a Nike-branded cloud. However, the real ‘piece de resistance’ is the Nike swoosh covered in dripping ice-cream! Already in 2016, Nike had focused on ‘food-inspired sneakers’ by launching Nike Kyrie 2 Ky-Rispy Kreme, a basketball shoe that recalls the donuts and packaging of ‘Krispy Kreme’ in its colours. Always that same year was the debut of Nike Chicken and Waffles, which covers the Nike SB Dunk with brown waffle-printed canvas, while the winged logo seems to be dripping in maple syrup! Nike also designed various editions of the LeBron Cereal, starting from the LeBron James basketball line for kids launched in 2006, and continuing with the Nike LeBron 15 – the Fruity Pebbles of 2018 –, inspired by LeBron’s favourite cereal and characterised by an upper in multicolour Battleknit, which recalls this cereal in a white bowl. Likewise longstanding is the collaboration between Converse and Coca-Cola, which first began in 2017 and continued in 2019, with the iconic Converse Chuck Taylor canvas shoe as the protagonist featuring the logo of the most beloved beverage worldwide.
Equally successful was also the partnership between Saucony and Dunkin Donuts, which led to the launching of Dunkin Donuts X Saucony Kinvara 9 in 2018, and then the year after of Kinvara 10, which, like the former, proposed the fuchsia and orange colours of the legendary American chain of donuts, and then enriched it with strawberry-glazed donuts attached to the laces and the tongue printed with a coffee cup. All of this is completed by three sets of white, orange, and pink laces and packaging inspired by the legendary Dunkin donut! In reality, Saucony has a long tradition of ‘food’-themed models, like for example its 2014 Shadow 5000 Burger – inspired by one of the symbols of American culture – and more recently, 2019’s Shadow 6000 Saucamole, which pays tribute to one of the icons of American brunches: avocado toast. The upper is made from suede leather with avocado toast-like texturizing, while the tongue and insole feature the Saucony logo personalised with an avocado and the heel is printed with the exciting writing of "Saucamole"... All of which is of course specially packaged to reflect the theme! The trend of ‘food-inspired sneakers’

The production of wool felt traditionally consumes an enormous amount of water and energy. Renske Vogel, founder of the féline company together with her father, has developed a new manufacturing method: the material made of wool and recycled PET does not use water or drying machines in the felting process, is produced using a two-sided needling machine, it does not have visible punctures on the front and is available in various thicknesses. The féline felt gives architects, interior designers and stylists a very flexible material that can be used for various applications including wall coverings (applied on large surfaces using biodegradable glue or self-adhesive backing) or sound-absorbing partitions for desks. The stock is available in a very wide range of colours and reflects both current on-trend hues and subtle grey and natural shades. “Our customers only have to tell us what they need. The customisation possibilities are endless,” explains Renske Vogel.

Are antiviral fabrics the future? THE DEMAND FOR TEXTILE PRODUCTS WITH ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIVIRAL PROPERTIES IS GROWING AND THE ISSUE OF HEALTH HAS BECOME A PRIORITY FOR TEXTILE-FASHION COMPANIES To date, there is still no proven technology to combat Covid-19, but several brands and companies, by increasing research and experimentation, have sped up the process to create products with antibacterial yarns or finishes that act as a screen against viruses and bacteria and that can withstand numerous washes. Experimentation and innovation, of course, take place in the fibre and fabric department, upstream of the supply chain, where companies have been investing for some time now and, during the lockdown, have accelerated research, creating “smart” fabrics with new technologies or special treatments to give fabrics antibacterial and antiviral properties. For example, Albini Group, a Bergamo-based company specialising in luxury fabrics for shirts, is experimenting with a new technology called ViroFormula™. The Albini antiviral fabrics use Viroblock produced by the Swiss company, HeiQ, a leader in textile innovation and technologies. The fixing technology actively prevents the fabrics from becoming a host surface for the
harmful spread of viruses and bacteria, thus helping to reduce the risk and speed of contamination. The chemical-textile elements used also allow destroying viruses through the breakthrough combination of patented silver-based technologies that generate high-spectrum antiviral reactions by attracting and destroying viruses by permanently binding them to their sulphur groups, as well as to liposomes. ViroFormula™ fabrics are designed for all types of clothing and are ideal for making shirts, tunics, jackets and trousers. An anti-Coronavirus fabric has also been developed in the Varese textile district, which is not only for medical purposes. TMR Cederna Fodere of Verghera di Samarate, supplier for brands such as Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, says that the input for this innovation came from a German customer’s request for a fabric that was both antiviral and antibacterial. The name of the new formula is ViroProtect +, which combines an ISO-certified antiviral treatment and an antibacterial finish tested in the laboratory to “disarm” any viruses immediately after contact with the fabric. The formula is available as an additional finish on the entire range of cellulose and organic fibres. The Inntex company from Florence is focusing on the antibacterial properties of copper. As regards the home, health and hospitality sector, Manifattura Crespi® has been producing innovative fabrics for mattresses and pillows in Italy since 1954, and has perfect solutions for this emergency, with certifications renewed annually according to the “OekoTex” requirements of the strictest category, Class 1. The Molecular Fibre Copper CU fabrics are made with Resistex® Copper fibres using a thin filament of pure copper positioned on the fabric surface in contact with the body where it delivers antibacterial, antistatic, thermoregulating, anti-free radical benefits.

do della moda. RESEARCH
A very futuristic look comes from the “Full Metal Jacket” in 65% bacterial copper by the British start-up Vollebak, already known for putting on the market a graphene jacket and t-shirt in carbon fibre. The process of transforming metal into a high-performance wearable fabric is highly complex. The first of the jacket’s three layers is made of clear lacquered copper yarn. The outer fabric is laminated with an advanced waterproof and breathable membrane called c_ change®. Instead of remaining static, the membrane can open and close to respond to different weather conditions, while remaining permanently waterproof and windproof. Once the metallic fabric and the membrane have been bonded together, an abrasion-resistant polyamide backing is added. “The jacket is our first move into copper clothing and is designed to be worn like a normal jacket. It is light and comfortable, and the copper is woven into a flexible yarn and the garment is fleece-lined, so it’s comfortable enough to be worn every day. Over time the fabric wears out like denim, fold lines will emerge and the colours will gradually fade to reveal the captivating shade of raw copper” said Nick Tidball, co-founder of Vollebak.
VOLLEBAK

Superga, starts back up with the colours of the Italian flag The creativity of artists, Italy and the colours of the Italian flag. These are the ingredients of SupergaLab@Home, a project that would like to represent a message full of pride for starting back up again, which was launched by Superga in collaboration with Carioca®, the brand specialised in products meant to help develop the creativity of children. The project, which was launched in June, has the silhouette of the iconic white Superga 2750 as its protagonist: a perfect canvas on which many artists were invited to express their creativity, while respecting however two parameters, the theme of “Italy” and the exclusive use of the Italian flag’s colours. The unusual creations are then posted on the Instagram profiles of the selected illustrators with a hashtag that refer to the pages of Superga and Carioca. What better message than this for communicating the desire to restart to the Superga community?

Lumberjack: comfort is fashionable
Norway by Carvico, tech and sustainable
The Maple leaf brand conveys new style to a comfort line characterised by a striking design, which is lit up by a range of warm and enveloping colours. Three models combine classic elements of the brand with a sporty and high performance coté, guaranteed by a use of quality materials and innovative absorbed technology. The first model is Helix, the boat shoe with a style that plays around with sneaker contaminations: in nubuck with an extralight and shock-absorbent sole, it is lightweight and suited to all occasions. The iconic Miami sneaker is revamped in a vintage key, in leather that interacts with lightweight and breathable materials, while featuring new details and combinations of different colours. Dynamic and for the city, it respects the anatomy of the foot, while guaranteeing a comfortable fit. The offering is topped off by Kobe, the casual shoe with an extra-comfort sole thanks to EVA inserts, which are for ideal shock-absorption on all kinds of terrain.
The latest proposal in the wide range of Carvico technical-elasticised and eco-sustainable fabrics is Norway, which candidates itself as the perfect solution for winter sports. Made from Econyl®, 100% regenerated nylon from pre and post-consumer discards like fishing nets, carpet fluff, and rigid tulle, Norway is characterised by an exquisite gauzed effect, is pleasurable to the touch and extremely comfortable when it comes into contact with the skin. Its technical features make it especially suited to winter sports: it is breathable, while ensuring the right heat exchange occurs between the body and the external environment, and is fast-drying, preventing sweat and moisture from remaining on the skin. Its anti-bacteria treatment prevents bad smells and possible irritation and it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection from extremely cold temperatures as well as UV protection (UPF 50+). Ultra-resistant, Norway is also a fabric destined to last over time, with pilling and abrasion resistance.

With the aim of contributing to restore that part of the planet from which it has always drawn inspiration, The North Face proposes the “Bottle Source” t-shirts, made using plastic bottles found in the Indian Himalaya basin, with the aim of preserving this area for the exploration of future generations. All the garments of the collection are characterised by waterproof, breathable and light Futurelight technology: the 7SE 1994 jacket, Retro Mountain Light trousers and the Mountain Lite cap are ideal to face any challenge with maximum comfort.
Trendy, young and fearless, the capsule collection perfectly combines comfort and trend. THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS AND FAIRS IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY RENEW THEIR PROPOSAL LE PIÙ IMPORTANTI MANIFESTAZIONI ED EVENTI NELL’AMBITO TESSILE RINNOVANO L’OFFERTA More than 95% of the space already booked for January 2021 “Even though it is difficult to make predictions at present, we expect to be able to offer international players in the industry a positive, safe and first-rate environment from 12 to 15 January 2021,” declared Olaf Schmidt, Vice President of Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, organisers of the fair. “As far as the pandemic is concerned, we are convinced that people will still want to meet in person to exchange their products, perhaps more so than ever after this year of crisis. Virtual offers can of course complement global communication, but personal meetings and the experience of touch, especially in the textile industry, will remain essential.” Changes to the program structure are already planned with entire areas updated and remodelled in order to provide Heimtextil participants with comprehensive information and inspiration. As a trend barometer when it comes to design, trends and market forecasts for home textiles, hotel textiles and interior design, Heimtextil offers unique presentations and first-class inspirations in its “Trend Space.” In addition, for more than ten years, Heimtextil has dedicated itself to the theme of sustainability and this will also continue in 2021 with the “Green Tours”, “Green Village” and “Green Directory”.
Waiting for the next September edition, both physical and online Last February’s Première Vision Paris succeeded in mobilising industry professionals from 124 countries around more than 1,700 exhibitors for an edition complicated by the coronavirus-related health crisis, which resulted in a loss of 45 Chinese companies that were unable to attend at the last minute or to be represented by their European teams. This edition presented a selective and creative offer from 1,710 international exhibitors of yarns and fibres, fabrics, leather, designs, accessories and fashion products – with 48 countries represented. The 44,414 visitors and international buyers voiced their approval for an event full of inspiration, experiences and talks by experts and strategists on key industry issues, including eco-responsibility, technology, craftsmanship, markets. The February 2020 edition once again put the spotlight on “responsible” creation, engaging visitors in the Smart Creation area where 58 exhibitors presented their latest “green” innovations.
