Marta Ferri’s style in Rothy’s new footwear

ROTHY’S, THE AMERICAN FOOTWEAR BRAND BASED IN SAN FRANCISCO MADE ITS DEBUT IN ITALY WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE EXCLUSIVE CAPSULE COLLECTION DESIGNED BY MARTA FERRI Footwear created by Rothy’s is known all over the world for being elegant, comfortable, sustainable and machine washable. Rothy’s, in fact, transforms plastic into a soft and breathable (and therefore producing zero waste) 3D knitted yarn to give shape to the upper of the shoe, which is combined with a recycled insole and a carbon-free rubber sole, to end up, after 55 stages of handcrafted refinement, at the final product.

Based on the principle of material innovation, Rothy’s also presents high-quality, zero-impact merino wool in a new and elegant collection designed by Erin Lowenberg, creative director of the American company. The exclusive capsule collection designed by the Milanese designer Marta Ferri is part of this new project. Inspired

by Rothy’s unique design and commitment to sustainability, Marta brings her refined creativity, her unique style, and her love for fabrics and colours to the Marta Ferri x Rothy’s collection.

The merino wool used by Rothy’s comes from the Biellese textile company Tollegno 1900, famous for the quality of extremely thin wool and for the sustainability of the production and breeding processes. Rothy’s blends the finest wool with 25% of recycled PET, obtaining a warm and soft fibre for a modern, quality and high-performance shoe.

La lana merino utilizzata da Rothy’s proviene dall’azienda tessile biellese Tollegno 1900, famosa per la qualità della lana estremamente fine e per la sostenibilità dei processi produttivi e di allevamento. Rothy’s miscela la lana più raffinata con il 25% di PET riciclato, ottenendo una fibra calda e morbida per una calzatura moderna, di qualità e ad alta performance.

LUCA LUBELLO

THE NEW LUBELLO BRAND PRESENTED A FINE COLLECTION AT PITTI UOMO. CREATIVITY AND ART THAT BECOME FOOTWEAR Luca Lubello began cultivating his passion for art in his teenage years, and it was not long before he started creating his own artworks characterised by a special and original technique. In 2010, he had the opportunity to enter the world of footwear, working as an assistant for Ernesto Esposito. He was captivated by this world, and after other significant experiences in the creative offices of Salvatore Ferragamo and Max Verre, he created and developed the Louis Leeman brand, which became a direct competitor of the top luxury brands. He also collaborated with other prestigious brands, such as Casadei and Mary Katrantzou.

His own personal project, the Lubello brand, was born in 2018, inspired by the unique architecture of Florence, the geometries of its monumental churches, the marble facades of Santa Maria Novella and San Miniato. These elements are skilfully translated into unique pieces by local craftsmen who carry on a timeless tradition.

Thus, the ancient Greek myths reflected in the Florentine Renaissance art and history come back to life.

Even though Lubello now calls Florence home, the influences of his origins and of Vanvitelli (architect of the Reggia di Caserta) remain in him, as do the stories born under Vesuvius, between Naples and Campi Flegrei.

Un mondo che lo cattura e che, dopo esperienze significative nell'ufficio stile di Salvatore Ferragamo e Max Verre, lo conducono alla nascita e allo sviluppo del marchio Louis Leeman, concorrente diretto dei migliori marchi del lusso, e ad altre prestigiose collaborazioni con Casadei e Mary Katrantzou.

Nel 2018 nasce il suo personalissimo progetto, il marchio Lubello, che si ispira all'architettura unica di Firenze, alle geometrie delle sue chiese monumentali, ai marmi sulle facciate di Santa Maria Novella e San Miniato. Elementi che vengono sapientemente tradotti in pezzi unici da artigiani locali che portano avanti una tradizione senza tempo. Gli antichi miti greci, che si riflettono nell'arte e nella storia del Rinascimento fiorentino, prendono così vita.

Sebbene Firenze sia ora casa per Lubello, in lui permangono comunque le influenze delle sue origini, del Vanvitelli (Reggia di Caserta), ma anche le storie nate sotto il Vesuvio, tra Napoli e i Campi Flegrei.

Leather designs are soft, round, natural, metal-free; hand polishing with woolen cloths creates surfaces which are dry and pleasant to the touch. The colour palette borrows the warm shades of the earth, the burnished leather tone and neutral shades like Camel and Asphalt, which are joined by the indispensable blue and black.

Also Goodyear workings find new solutions to enhance the volumes increased to the limit, at the same time maintaining lightness and comfort. Leather bottoms and the classic rainy weather Dainite go alongside Gum Lite and wedges. The beauty of the moccasin design is striking, and above all its lightness, obtained thanks to a O’Keeffe patent that maintains the precious leather sole, even if emptied and EVA filled. And for the lovely photo campaign Arezzo invited as a testimonial Erika Januza, directed by Giovanni Bianco. MICAM 89, when innovation comes to life FURTHER NEW INITIATIVES FOR THE FEBRUARY 2020 EDITION (FROM 16 TO 19) WHICH WILL GIVE SPACE TO RESEARCH, YOUNG PEOPLE, SPORT, SUSTAINABILITY AND, OBVIOUSLY, DREAMS 2019 represented a year with ups and downs for the Made in Italy footwear: production decreased (-2.9% in quantity compared to the same period of the previous year) and so did household purchases (-3.3% in quantity) against a positive export performance (+ 6.7% in value) according to the economic data relating to the first nine months of last year, developed for Assocalzaturifici by the Centro Studi Confindustria Moda.

Siro Badon, President of Assocalzaturifici: “The success of our footwear abroad, which confirms the appeal of Made in Italy on international markets, is reduced by the contraction in volumes SIRO BADON which translates into a decrease in production and employees. In this moment when internal consumption is suffering we should bring out national pride and support our companies by buying more Italian shoes”.

Speaking to his footwear colleagues, Badon renewed the invitation to ever more focus on young people and innovation, as will happen in February during the next Micam edition with the debut of the MICAM “X” format. An initiative that will bring together the most innovative and technological proposals, presenting to the operators expected from all over the world the new market trends declined around three key themes: materials, retail and sustainability. In a symbolic and decisive moment for the world and for the footwear industry, MICAM “X” will become the stage for the most innovative and technological proposals and will characterise the heart of the fair, in the area of fashion shows and seminars in Hall 1.

A renewal that also passes through the new promotional image of the fair which, after passing through Dante’s cantos, focuses on the world of fairy tales (#mi-

camtales), a collection of fairy tales to wear to celebrate creativity, dreams and genius of the footwear world that animates MICAM. Instead, the area dedicated to sports and outdoor footwear is proposed again after last season’s success. The PLAYERS DISTRICT proves to be a space in line with market trends, which see the segment of sports shoes growing: in the first nine months of 2019 Italian families spent, in fact, 3.4% more for this type of footwear compared to the same period of 2018, for a total of approximately 750 million Euro in value and 15.4 million pairs sold, + 3.0% (source: Confindustria Moda on Sita Ricerca data). A further consolidation, therefore, after the increases of more than 5%, both in expenditure and quantity, registered on a final balance basis in 2018. Together with sneakers, the sports sector is the only one to highlight an increase in sales on the domestic market, for a long time in strong stagnation. Istat data for Italian sports shoe exports are also characterised by positive dynamics: in fact, in the first 9 months of 2019, Italy exported 11.8 million pairs for 645.4 million euro (with tendential increases of respectively 9.5% and 6.7%).

The PLAYERS DISTRICT was born as an area that intends to give further value to the segment, allowing producers and operators to be able to count on a specific business space.

The layout of the area will once again feature a central space, The Arena, dedicated to the discovery ‘in action’ of the many souls of sports footwear through dynamic performances and events that are perfectly connected to the spirit of the sector.

At the beginning there was also talk of giving space to young people. That’s why the EMERGING DESIGNERS area is back in the news, a unique opportunity offered to young creatives to present their style in a prestigious setting such as that of the event, confirming the desire for the sector’s innovation. The creative protagonists of the Emerging Designers space will be 12, selected by a jury of professionals, experts in the fashion and communication sector, chaired by the stylist Ernesto Esposito.

The designer’s style proposal ranges from pop citations to research around the most classic forms, from metropolitan atmospheres told by electronic music, to the rediscovery of natural or waste materials for new and surprising fashion ideas. There is no shortage of truly unusual experiments and original reinterpretations of models that have made the history of footwear.

Un’iniziativa che raccoglierà le proposte più innovative e tecnologiche, presentando agli operatori attesi da tutto il mondo le nuove tendenze di mercato declinate intorno a tre temi chiave: materiali, retail e sostenibilità. In un momento simbolico e decisivo per il mondo e per l’industria calzaturiera, MICAM “X”, diventerà il palcoscenico delle proposte più innovative e tecnologiche e caratterizzerà il cuore della fiera, nell’area delle sfilate e seminari al Padiglione 1.

Un rinnovamento che passa anche per la nuova immagine promozionale del salone la quale, dopo aver attraversato le cantiche di Dante, si concentra sul mondo delle fiabe (#micamtales), una collezione di favole da indossare per celebrare creatività, sogno e genio del mondo delle calzature che anima MICAM. Si ripropone, invece, l’area dedicata alle calzature sportive e outdoor dopo il successo della stagione scorsa. Il PLAYERS DISTRICT si dimostra uno spazio in linea con le tendenze del mercato, che vedono il segmento delle scarpe sportive in crescita: nei primi nove mesi del 2019 le famiglie italiane hanno speso, infatti, il 3,4% in più per questa tipologia di calzatura rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2018, per un totale di circa 750 milioni di Euro di valore e 15,4 milioni di paia vendute, +3,0% (fonte: Confindustria Moda su dati Sita Ricerca). I creativi protagonisti dello spazio Emerging Designers saranno 12, selezionati da una giuria di professionisti, esperti del settore moda e comunicazione, presieduta dallo stilista Ernesto Esposito. La proposta di stile dei designer spazia dalle citazioni pop alla ricerca intorno alle forme più classiche, dalle atmosfere metropolitane raccontate dalla musica elettronica, fino alla riscoperta di materiali naturali o di scarto per nuove e sorprendenti idee-moda.

Non mancano sperimentazioni davvero inusuali e reinterpretazioni originali di modelli che hanno fatto la storia della calzatura.

“Escapism Through Unknown Neighboring Lands” is the capsule collection designed by Rafael Kouto, winner of the ITS 2019 Lotto Sport Award. Ten garments and a few shoes recount the crosspollination of couture, ethnic fashion and sportswear. The Afro-Swiss designer best interpreted the desire to always explore new frontiers of Lotto Sport Italia, which celebrates it 45th anniversary this year. Thanks to the Lotto Sport Award, Rafael Kouto took part in a training course within the Lotto’s style office, developing and creating his own mini-collection inspired by the history of the brand.

"Escapism Through Unknown Neighboring Lands" è la capsule collection disegnata da Rafael Kouto, vincitore del Lotto Sport Award di ITS 2019. Dieci capi e alcune calzature che raccontano la contaminazione di couture, moda etnica e sportswear. Lo stilista afro-svizzero ha interpretato al meglio la voglia di esplorare sempre nuove frontiere di Lotto Sport Italia, che compie quest’anno 45 anni. Grazie al Lotto Sport Award Rafael Kouto ha partecipato a un percorso formativo all’interno dell’ufficio stile di Lotto, sviluppando e realizzando una propria mini-collezione ispirata dalla storia del brand.

D.A.T.E. The new Autumn Winter collection 2021 catapults us into a style in which contemporary design and material research, typical of the brand, are mixed with vintage nuances characterised by contrasting accents.

The FUGA model remains the undisputed protagonist alongside D.A.T.E.’s always original superbasic Hill. The unmistakable sneaker with remarkable volumes is dressed in talc-coated colours characterised by contrasting accents. Made in Italy leathers, an enveloping and warm vintage inspiration, selected by D.A.T.E.’s designers. The outsole with remarkable volumes is super light in blowtech-gum rubber. The 2.5 cm high raised gel insole allows for optimal comfort.

La nuova collezione Fall Winter 2021 ci catapulta in uno stile in cui la contemporaneità del design e della ricerca materiali tipica del brand si mixa a nuance vintage con tocchi a contrasto.

Accanto al superbasico sempre originale delle HILL di D.A.T.E., resta protagonista indiscusso il modello FUGA. L’inconfondibile sneaker dai volumi importanti si veste di colorazioni dall’effetto talcato con tocchi a contrasto. Un’ispirazione vintage avvolgente e calda quella dei pellami Made in Italy selezionati dai designer di D.A.T.E. La suola dai volumi importanti è superleggera in gomma blowtech gum.

Il soletto interno in gel è rialzato di 2, 5 cm per un miglior comfort.

All the hallways of the fair were fully packed, as were the stands, where real orders were made in numbers superior to those of the past, also thanks to a significant increase in visitor numbers that were up +12% over 2019.

Couromoda 2020 reunited around 2,000 collections of footwear, bags, accessories, and apparel, proposing above all the latest products for fall-winter, even if readyto-wear collections for summer were also prominent. Jeferson Santos, director of the event, comments: “This new format, which FRANCISCO SANTOS limits the fair to only 3 days, was widely approved by exhibitors and visitors. The results were more than positive for both the visits of buyers and for the sales made during the days of the fair. This new configur ation led to a more intense dynamic in business relations, without forgetting about the importance of face-to-face interactions between producers, retailers, and importers, an essential factor for doing business, of which Couromoda is always an essential vehicle”.

End-of-year sales were high and we had the best Christmas we’ve had in recent years, without forgetting the importance of the reduced VAT applied to footwear in the State of São Paulo and in Rio Grande do Sul”.

The opening ceremony saw the participation, among others, of Joao Doria, governor of the State of São Paulo, and Eduardo Leite, governor of Rio Grande do Sul, who outlined the positive results achieved under their management, with an optimistic outlook for 2020. Leite underlined the importance of the private initiative in generating business and employment, but also how it is the job of the government to support entrepreneurs and business, by – for example – promoting privatization, approving the social security reform and creating new environmental policies. All things that have already been done in Rio Grande do Sul. Doria observed that also the State of São Paulo is following a line similar to that of Rio Grande do Sul, providing support to a liberal agenda with as little state interference as possible: “The time of State assistance is over and everyone must now do their own share. São Paulo – underlines Doria – will grow by +2.5% in 2020, and we hope the footwear manufacturing industry will exceed the initial forecast of +2.5% and arrive at +3.4%”. Doria ended his speech with words of praise for Couromoda, underlining the ever-innovative and capable character of the show in promoting concrete business opportunities.

Taking place in conjunction with Couromoda, which also saw important presence of bags, luggage, and costume jewellery, was São Paulo Prêt à Porter, the fashion event dedicated to apparel and fashion accessories, which is now in its eight edition, proposing apparel in all of its many facets.

The rendezvous for the next edition of Couromoda is from January 11th to 13th 2021, always in the halls of Expo Center Norte.

A proposito della situazione economica del Brasile, Santos prosegue: “In fiera si è respirato un clima di fiducia per un 2020 più che positivo per l’industria calzaturiera. Ci sono molti segnali che ci permettono di pensare a un anno promettente, con un lento, ma costante ritorno al consumo. Le vendite di fine anno sono state di rilievo e abbiamo vissuto il EDUARDO LEITE miglior Natale degli ultimi anni, senza dimenticare l’importanza della diminuzione dell’IVA sulle calzature attuata dallo Stato di San Paolo e del Rio Grande do Sul”.

Alla cerimonia di apertura hanno partecipato, tra gli altri, Joao Doria, governatore dello Stato di San Paolo e Eduardo Leite, governatore del Rio Grande do Sul, che hanno tracciato un bilancio positivo della loro gestione, mostrandosi ottimisti per il 2020. Leite ha sottolineato l’importanza dell’iniziativa privata per generare lavoro e impiego, ma anche come sia compito del governo favorire l’imprenditoria e gli affari, come –ad esempio –favorire le privatizzazioni, approvare la riforma previdenziale e dare un nuovo codice ambientale. Tutte cose già fatte nel Rio Grande do Sul. Doria ha osservato che anche lo Stato di San Paolo segue una linea simile a quella del Rio Grande do Sul, appoggiando un’agenda liberale con il minor intervento statale possibile: “È finito il tempo dello Stato assistenzialista e ognuno deve fare la sua parte. San Paolo – sottolinea Doria – crescerà del 2,5% nel 2020. Speriamo che il settore calzaturiero superi la prospettiva iniziale del 2,5% e arrivi fino a un +3,4%”. Doria ha concluso con parole di elogio per Couromoda della quale ha sottolineato il carattere sempre innovatore e capace di promuovere affari concreti.

Contemporaneamente a Couromoda, che ha visto anche la presenza importante di borse, valigeria e bijoux, si è svolta anche São Paulo Prêt à Porter, rassegna di moda dell’abbigliamento e dell’accessorio di moda, giunta ormai alla sua ottava edizione, che ha proposto l’abbigliamento nelle sue varie sfaccettature.

L’appuntamento con la prossima edizione di Couromoda è dal 11 al 13 gennaio 2021, sempre nei padiglioni di Expo Center Norte.

We met up with the heads of the Brazilian Footwear Industries Association (Abicalçados) to ask them their opinion on the domestic market’s performance and on the potential numbers for Brazilian exports in 2020. Caetano Bianco Neto believes there is a “moderate level of optimism”: “In 2019, we had extremely positive predictions, but the delay of some important structural reforms – as in the case of the Pension reform – slightly decreased our level of optimism.

For this reason, we now tend towards caution: better to arrive to the end than say we HAROLDO FERREIRA got close without achieving our goal. All considered, 2019 was not a bad year, but it could have been better. What is certain is that today the market – and especially the domestic one – has stopped dropping-off. A certain level of confidence also returned among consumers, and so I believe there will be an improvement and a new positive economic moment in Brazil”.

For Haroldo Ferreira, exports in 2019 were critical to maintaining the country’s growth trend: “Foreign markets were positive for our exports, including especially the United States, as a result of the USA-China trade war. In this period, North American buyers looked for products in alternative markets to China, finding in Brazil a manufacturing country with which to collaborate and place greater trust in. In 2019 – comments Ferreira – we had an increase of +0.9% in volume, but a decrease of -0.1% in revenue. In terms of the American dollar’s value, we had a +7% increase in the Real. A positive and important result!” “For 2020, the sector hopes to grow between +2% and +2.5%, also thanks to the improved scenario in the domestic market to which 85% of our production is currently destined (over 950 million pairs per year). Certainly – concludes Ferreira – it’s not all to our advantage: from the new USA-China trade agreements to the crisis in Argentina, etc... Fortunately, it bears repeating, the domestic market is recovering and the increased number of visitors (+12%) at Couromoda 2020 is proof of this fact”.

Incontriamo i responsabili dell’Associazione brasiliana dei fabbricanti di calzature (Abicalçados), per chiedere loro un parere sull’andamento del mercato interno e sulle potenzialità nei confronti dell’export della calzatura brasiliana nel 2020. Per Caetano Bianco Neto esiste un “ottimismo moderato”: “Nel 2019 avevamo prospettive molto positive, ma il ritardo di alcune riforme strutturali importanti – come il caso della riforma della Previdenza – ha limitato un po’ il nostro ottimismo. Per questo cerchiamo di essere cauti: meglio arrivare alla meta che dire ci siamo avvicinati senza riuscire a raggiungerla. In fondo, però, il 2019 non è stato un brutto anno, ma avrebbe potuto essere migliore. Quello che è certo è che oggi il mercato – specie quello interno - ha smesso di peggiorare.

E’ tornata una certa fiducia anche nel consumatore, per cui ritengo che ci sarà un miglioramento e un nuovo momento economico del Brasile”.

Per Haroldo Ferreira, l’export nel 2019 è stato determinante per mantenere la crescita: “Il mercato esterno ha guardato positivamente al nostro export, specialmente nei confronti degli Stati Uniti, come risultato della guerra commerciale USA-Cina. In questo periodo i compratori nord-americani hanno cercato prodotti in mercati alternativi alla Cina, trovando nel Brasile un Paese produttore con il quale collaborare e fare ancora maggior affidamento.

“Nel 2019 – afferma Ferreira – abbiamo avuto un aumento dello 0,9% in volume, ma una diminuzione dell 0,1% del giro d’affari. Però, in funzione della valorizzazione del dollaro americano, abbiamo avuto un incremento del 7% in Reais. Un risultato positivo importante!”. “Per il 2020 il settore spera di crescere tra il 2% e il 2,5%, grazie anche ad un miglioramento del mercato interno che attualmente assorbe l’85% della produzione (oltre 950 milioni di paia l’anno). Certo – conclude Ferreira - non tutto è favorevole: dai nuovi accordi commerciali USA-Cina fino alla crisi dell’Argentina ecc… Fortunatamente, ripeto, il mercato interno è in ripresa e l’aumento di visitatori (12%) a Couromoda 2020 ne è una dimostrazione”.

Mercosur-EU: the possible scenarios opened up by the agreement

Mercosur-Ue: i possibili scenari aperti dall’accordo

At Couromoda, Ferdinando Fiore, director of ICE Italy in São Paulo, outlined the business opportunities opened up by the Mercosur and EU free trade agreement over the course of an interesting conference held with the Brazilian press: “The dimensions of the market and the respective gross national products – 260 million consumers in Mercosur with a GDP of 2.2 trillion euros, compared to the 500 million consumers in Europe with a GDP of 16.9 trillion euros – already presents a picture of the impact the agreement will have over the FERDINANDO FIORE next few years. – explains Ferdinando Fiore - Currently, Europe is Mercosur’s number one trade partner, accounting for a 20% share, receiving exports equal to 68 billion euros in products, with 381 billion euros in investments. From the other end, Europe exports goods to Mercosur for a value of 45 billion euros and services equal to another 23 billion euros”.

It’s easy to imagine the agreement that calls for a 91% elimination of customs duties, further fuelling the business of European firms in Mercosur. For all commodity-related categories exported to Mercosur, it is predicted 4 billion euros will be saved per year. In particular, also European footwear – which up until today was hindered by a tariff of 35% - will benefit from the new regime.

One player in particular that will benefit from this agreement is bound to be Brazil, the main footwear manufacturer in the area by a long shot: in 2019, it exported 114.55 million pairs for a value of 870.3 billion euros. The first destination was the USA, followed by Argentina and France. Brazilian imports instead come from Vietnam, Indonesia, and China, while Italy is the 8 th exporter in volume with 241 thousand pairs.

What will be the advantages of the agreement? Greater transparency, the simplification of customs procedures, and protection from the plague of counterfeiting. Mercosur will also succeed in increasing its own exports if it complies with European standards, by integrating the Brazilian industry with innovative European value chains, so it can become more competitive and diversify its structure by producing services and quality products. These new opportunities from one end will allow European and Mercosur consumers to fully benefit from a wider and more favourable range of products and services, while from the other end, they will open up the market of government contracts in Mercosur.

Ferdinando Fiore, direttore di ICE Italia di San Paolo, ha illustrato a Couromoda le opportunità commerciali aperte dal trattato di libero scambio tra Mercosur e UE nel corso di un interessante incontro con la stampa brasiliana: “Le dimensioni dei mercati e i rispettivi prodotti interni lordi - 260 milioni di consumatori in Mercosur con un Pil di 2.200 miliardi di euro, contro i 500 milioni di consumatori europei con un pil di 16.900 miliardi di euro – già delineano un quadro dell’impatto che l’accordo avrà nei prossimi anni – spiega Ferdinando Fiore -. Attualmente l’Europa è il primo partner commerciale del Mercosur, con una quota del 20%, con esportazioni per 68 miliardi di euro in prodotti e per 381 miliardi in investimenti. Dall’altro lato, l’Europa esporta merci in Mercosur per un valore di 45 miliardi di euro e servizi per altrettanti 23 miliardi di euro”.

E’ facile immaginare che l’accordo, che prevede la cancellazione del 91% dei dazi, darà ulteriore propulsione al business della aziende europee in Mercosur. Si prevede che, per tutte le categorie merceologiche esportate in Mercosur, ci sarà un risparmio di 4 miliardi di euro l’anno. In particolare, anche la calzatura europea – fino ad oggi gravata di un dazio del 35% - beneficerà del nuovo regime.

Un attore che si avvantaggerà dell’accordo è senz’altro il Brasile, di gran lunga il principale produttore di calzature dell’area: nel 2019 ha esportato 114,55 milioni di paia per un valore di 870,3 milioni di euro. La prima destinazione sono stati gli USA, cui seguono Argentina e Francia. Le importazioni in Brasile provengono invece da Vietnam, Indonesia e Cina, mentre l’Italia è l’8° esportatore per volume con 241 mila paia.

Quali saranno gli assett dell’accordo? Una maggiore trasparenza, semplificazione delle procedure doganali, protezione dalla piaga della contraffazione.

Il Mercosur riuscirà ad aumentare le sue esportazioni se saprà rispettare gli standard europei, integrare l’industria brasiliana con le innovative catene di valore europee per diventare più competitiva e diversificare le economie producendo servizi e prodotti di valore. Le prospettive che così si apriranno da un lato permetteranno ai consumatori Europei e del Mercosur di attingere ad un più largo e conveniente bacino di prodotti e servizi, dall’altro apriranno il mercato degli appalti governativi in Mercosur.

The women’s 8-hole lace-up ankle boot with rear zipper is iconic for women who simplify the fit in golden metal with personalised loop, made of nappa leather with elasticised leg and personalised by golden hand stitching on the heel and golden eyelets. The sole is in Eva for increased lightness. The brand presented at Pitti Uomo a collection inspired by travel and the winter moods of the 70’s.

The iconic models of the brand are reinterpreted in a daywear version with a vintage mood, which recalls the atmospheres of the most famous ski resorts of that era. Grip-fast bikers inspired by the 90’s are flanked by boots and ankle boots with leather-effect or crêpe-effect rubber outsoles, while the evening models are embellished by a coloured contrasting sole with an unexpected touch. Closed due to virus outbreak The average turnover indices of tanneries in the most important producing countries continued to show almost exclusively negative changes towards the end of last year.

If for the world of leather, and fashion accessories in general, 2019 was not a bright year, the new decade does not open under the best auspices.

The inevitable repercussions of the epidemic outbreak that is keeping China, and also the rest of the world, in check are added to the uncertainties of the market.

“Closed due to virus outbreak” is a hypothetical sign that could sadly appear on upcoming industry events and sector figures. Today it is hard to assess its consequences.

What is certain is that it will aggravate the already precarious international economic situation.

Lineapelle, between positive signals and unknowns THE MARKET IS LOSING GROUND IN MANY RESPECTS, A POORLY DEFINED INTERNATIONAL SITUATION AND THE RECENT EPIDEMIC COULD ALSO WEIGH HEAVILY ON THE MOST IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL EVENT IN THE LEATHER AND FASHION ACCESSORIES SECTOR Lineapelle London, the opening of the new trade fair season dedicated to materials, components and fashion accessories, registered a good ‘rebound’ both in terms of numbers (+12% of visitors) and quality. Lineapelle New York, on the other hand, exposed a market that is looking for innovations, but is also plagued by the economic difficulties and, therefore, obsessively attentive to the price.

Contrasting indications that together with the effects of the Coronavirus have created a difficult situation for the edition of Lineapelle to be held in Fieramilano Rho from 19 to 21 February 2020.

The fair, which will host around 1,250 exhibitors and usually welcomes about 20,000 buyers, will take place during a crucial week for the fashion industry, at a time when it unleashes all its firepower (Micam, Mipel, Milano Moda Donna, Simac Tanning Tech, Super, White and The One).

“This synergy with Micam and Mipel, which will overlap by one day, is very important for the fashion industry,” says Fulvia Bacchi, CEO of UNIC-Lineapelle, “just as important is the tradition of holding Simac Tanning Tech at the same time. Bacchi also outlines the economic situation of the market. “We are certainly going through a difficult moment from an economic point of view: footwear is declining; automotive and furniture as well; leather goods and clothing are stable, however, they represent a niche. International uncertainty and the weakness of the Italian domestic market, which continues to slow down consumption, weighs heavily on the sector. As a result, in 2019 the tanning sector recorded a significant drop, both in terms of production and exports. This is less true for footwear components, synthetics and metal accessories which have performed better.”

The theme chosen by Lineapelle for the new 2021 Summer trends is: “The Era of Simplifying”. No more excesses, therefore, and free reign to the desire for simplification, the reduction of waste and time, made possible by the use of technology and digital systems, but also to graphics and sketches. A season in which fashion seeks harmony with the environment, proposing materials and processes that show meticulous detail and performance.

There are three inspirations. Enhanced basics: speed and digital synthesis have generated a new kind of design where algorithms are transformed into basic forms. The second is a new romance where colours become pure light in contact with technology, creating unreal shades and brighter pastels. Finally, manual processes: the simplicity of all that is handmade and the authenticity of imperfections.

L’edizione Lineapelle New York ha evidenziato, invece, un mercato che cerca novità, ma è anche afflitto dalle difficoltà congiunturali e perciò attento al prezzo in modo ossessivo.

Indicazioni contrastanti, quindi, che insieme alle conseguenze del Coronavirus pongono in una non facile situazione l’edizione di Lineapelle in calendario a Fieramilano Rho dal 19 al 21 febbraio prossimi.

Il salone, che ospiterà circa 1.250 espositori e solitamente accoglie la visita di un numero di buyer che si attesta attorno alle 20.000 unità, si svolge in una settimana cruciale per l’industria della moda che concentra in quel momento tutta la sua potenza di fuoco (Micam, Mipel, Milano Moda Donna, Simac Tanning Tech, Super, White e The One). “È molto importante - dichiara Fulvia Bacchi, direttore generale UNIC-Lineapelle - questa sinergia in ambito moda con Micam e Mipel, con i quali avremo un giorno di sovrapposizione, così come l’ormai tradizionale contestualità di Simac Tanning Tech. Fra i temi importanti della fiera spicca senza dubbio la sostenibilità”. È sempre Bacchi a tratteggiare i contorni della situazione economica del mercato: “Stiamo certamente vivendo un momento difficile dal punto di vista congiunturale: la calzatura è in flessione; automotive e arredamento anche; stabile la pelletteria e l’abbigliamento che, però, rappresenta una nicchia. Pesa la situazione di incertezza internazionale e la debolezza del mercato interno italiano, che continua a rallentare i consumi. Il settore conciario, di conseguenza, nel 2019 ha registrato un calo significativo, sia a livello di produzione che di export. Discorso che vale meno per i componenti per calzatura, i sintetici e gli accessori metallici che mettono a segno performance migliori”.

Per quanto riguarda i nuovi trend per l’estate 2021, il tema scelto da Lineapelle è: The Era of Simplifying. Stop agli eccessi, quindi, e campo libero alla voglia di semplificazione, alla riduzione degli sprechi di tempo e spazio, grazie all’utilizzo di tecnologia e mezzi digitali, ma anche al segno grafico e allo sketch del disegno. Una stagione in cui la moda cerca un’armonia con l’ambiente, proponendo materiali e lavorazioni che mostrano un lavoro meticoloso sui dettagli e sulle loro performance.

Tre le ispirazioni. I basici potenziati: velocità e sintesi digitale generano un nuovo design in cui gli algoritmi si trasformano in forme essenziali. La seconda riguarda un nuovo romanticismo in cui i colori diventano pura luce a contatto con la tecnologia, creando sfumature irreali e i pastelli si fanno luminosi. infine, le lavorazioni manuali, la semplicità del fatto a mano e l’autenticità dell’imperfetto.

THE UNIC CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE AND DEFEND LEATHER ‘Real leather is real sustainability’ is the slogan of the new three-year communication and promotion campaign to spread the excellence of Italian leather worldwide.

To communicate the many, evident sustainable pluses of Italian leather. This is the clear goal of the new UNIC – CONCERIE ITALIANE campaign, created in collaboration with the international agency, Spring Studios.

At the same, the objective is to deny the paradoxical accusations made against leather by misleading campaigns based on wrong assumptions, and, sometimes, objectively beyond the limits of absurdity.

The basic message is both simple and incisive and it is aimed primarily at end consumers, so that they can understand the absolute value of an Italian-made product of excellence, whose identity is based on indisputable characteristics of naturalness, circularity, durability and creativity.

The campaign will use the web and social networks to spread the message, as well as traditional channels and specific initiatives, with particular attention to places and moments in which the media attention will allow a greater diffusion of its messages.

UNIC wants to particularly make an impact on younger generations, communicating the identity of leather as a historical and consolidated example of circular economy.

In fact, UNIC will never tire of emphasising that leather is a by-product of the food industry destined, otherwise, to be get rid of using techniques that have a great impact on the environment. The tanning industry, instead, recovers it and transforms it into a material with a very high added value and multiple uses: fashion (leather goods, shoes, clothing), automotive, furniture and design.

Comunicare i tanti, evidenti valori sostenibili della pelle italiana. Questo è il chiaro obiettivo della nuova campagna UNIC – CONCERIE ITALIANE, realizzata in collaborazione con l’agenzia internazionale Spring Studios.

Contestualmente l’intento è di smentire le accuse paradossali che le sono rivolte da campagne fuorvianti, basate su assunti errati e, a volte, oggettivamente oltre il limite del ridicolo.

Il messaggio di base è semplice quanto incisivo e si rivolge ai consumatori finali affinché possano comprendere il valore assoluto di un prodotto di eccellenza del made in Italy, la cui identità si basa su indiscutibili caratteristiche di naturalità, circolarità, durabilità e creatività.

I canali attraverso i quali la campagna sarà veicolata in tutto il mondo sono il web e i social network, oltre che canali tradizionali e iniziative specifiche, con una particolare attenzione per luoghi e momenti in cui l’attenzione mediatica permetterà di ottenere una maggiore diffusione dei suoi messaggi.

Le generazioni più giovani sono uno dei target su cui UNIC vuole fare particolare presa, comunicando l’identità della pelle come storico e consolidato esempio di economia circolare. Non ci stancheremo mai di sottolineare, infatti, come la pelle sia un sottoprodotto dell’industria alimentare destinato, altrimenti, a essere oggetto di tecniche di smaltimento molto impattanti sull’ambiente. L’industria conciaria, invece, lo recupera, lo nobilita e lo trasforma in un materiale ad altissimo valore aggiunto e dalle molteplici destinazioni d’uso: moda (pelletteria, calzatura, abbigliamento), automotive, arredo e design.

Fimec will reunite the leather footwear sector in March 2020 THE LARGEST FAIR IN LATIN AMERICA IS ALREADY PREPARED FOR ITS 44TH EDITION, WHICH WILL BE HELD IN FENAC, NOVO HAMBURGO (BRAZIL), FROM MARCH 10TH TO 12TH 2020 Fimec (International fair of leather goods, chemicals, components, machinery and equipment for footwear manufacturers and tanneries) brings together the entire footwear sector and the leather supply chain under the same roof: hundreds of exhibitors who during the three days of the event will launch products, new technologies and services for hundreds of professionals from all over the world in search of innovation.

Three essential initiatives for the professional growth of operators in the sector are Concept Factory, Studio Fimec and Forum Fimec.

Concept Factory proposes a small conveyor for the production of footwear in real time, in order to show visitors the applicability of the technological processes and products displayed at the fair. Studio Fimec, on the other hand, explores the consumers’ point of view to identify their demands in terms of products, to anticipate trends and inspire innovation.

Furthermore, in 2020, Fimec Forum reaches its third edition. Sustainable is easily said INTERVIEW WITH SIMONE REMI, PRESIDENT OF THE GENUINE ITALIAN VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER CONSORTIUM In the greenwashing era, with big brands that boast a sustainability which is, as yet, completely unproven invoking metal-free leathers without having adequate knowledge of what this means in terms of the tanning process, we are quite happy to give the floor to those who have always produced tanned leather only with tannins of natural origin. Simone Remi, president of The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium, intervenes in the current debate, emphasising in particular “the hypocrisy of a market that sells materials deriving from oil passing it off as ecological, actually deceiving the same consumers”, as well as the damage caused by environmental organisations “which spread fake news as the one that animals are killed to use their skin”.

“The task of our Consortium, which this year celebrates 25 years - continues Remi - is first of all to promote the culture of material, in order not to lose beforehand the battle of competitiveness. We are 22 companies of an artisan nature that recover and ennoble waste material, giving it unique characteristics through processes that require time and attention. Our prices are the result of a production entirely made in Italy that respects an infinite series of regulations on labour, environment and security in our country, in the European Union and in all the countries where we export our leathers. So those who buy cheap leather in countries with milder laws and no controls, should not be allowed to talk about sustainability”.

Fortunately, the quality of vegetable-tanned leather still has many admirers, especially in advanced markets such as Japan and Korea where demand is increasing. “In the Far East consumers are more attentive to the intrinsic quality of the material, regardless of the strength of the brand, and they greatly appreciate the peculiar characteristics of our leather”.

Every year the Consortium organises promotional events on the main outlet markets, from China to Great Britain, to the United States. The last one took place this past November 27 at the Italian Cultural Institute of Tokyo. In addition to the traditional leather exhibition, a seminar was held dedicated to the sustainability and circularity of leather. In particular, the longevity of leather and vegetable artifacts has been compared with the fast fashion bulimia, which invades the world with accessories and garments destined to live a single season, pushing visitors to think which consumption is more sustainable. Also on display leather accessories made by the young designers who participated in the last edition of the Craft The Leather competition involving fashion schools worldwide.

Si fa presto a dire sostenibile INTERVISTA A SIMONE REMI, PRESIDENTE DEL CONSORZIO VERA PELLE CONCIATA AL VEGETALE In epoca di greenwashing, con grandi brand che vantano una sostenibilità tutta da dimostrare e invocano pelli metal free senza avere un’adeguata conoscenza di ciò che questo significa a livello di processo conciario, diamo volentieri la parola a chi da sempre produce pelle conciata solo con tannini di origine naturale. Simone Remi, presidente del Consorzio Vera Pelle Conciata al Vegetale, interviene nel dibattito in corso sottolineando in particolare “l’ipocrisia di un mercato che spaccia per ecologici materiali derivanti dal petrolio, di fatto ingannando gli stessi consumatori”, così come il danno arrecato da organizzazioni ambientaliste “che diffondono fake news come quella che per usare la pelle si uccidano gli animali”.

“Il compito del nostro Consorzio che quest’anno compie 25 anni - continua Remi – è prima di tutto quello di diffondere la cultura del materiale, anche per non perdere a priori la battaglia della competitività. Noi siamo 22 aziende di dimensione artigianale che recuperano e nobilitano un materiale di scarto, conferendogli caratteristiche uniche attraverso lavorazioni che richiedono tempo e attenzione. I nostri prezzi sono il risultato di una produzione tutta made in Italy che rispetta una serie infinita di normative sul lavoro, l’ambiente e la sicurezza del nostro paese, dell’Unione europea e di tutti i Paesi dove esportiamo i nostri pellami. Dunque, chi va a comprare la pelle a basso costo in Paesi dove le leggi sono più blande e non ci sono controlli, non dovrebbe permettersi di parlare di sostenibilità”.

Fortunatamente la qualità della pelle conciata al vegetale ha ancora tanti estimatori, soprattutto in mercati evoluti come Giappone e Corea dove le richieste sono in aumento. “In Estremo Oriente i consumatori sono più attenti alla qualità intrinseca del materiale, a prescindere dalla forza del brand, e apprezzano moltissimo le caratteristiche peculiari della nostra pelle”.

Ogni anno il consorzio organizza eventi promozionali sui principali mercati di sbocco, dalla Cina alla Gran Bretagna, agli Stati Uniti. L’ultimo si è svolto lo scorso 27 novembre presso l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tokyo. Oltre alla tradizionale esposizione di pellami, si è tenuto un seminario dedicato alla sostenibilità e alla circolarità della pelle. In particolare, è stata messa a confronto la longevità dei manufatti in pelle al vegetale con la bulimia del fast fashion, che invade il mondo con accessori e capi destinati a vivere una sola stagione, spingendo i visitatori a una riflessione su quali consumi siano più sostenibili.

In mostra anche gli accessori in pelle realizzati dai giovani designer che hanno partecipato alla scorsa edizione del concorso Craft The Leather che coinvolge le scuole di moda di tutto il mondo.

Within a short time the Consortium increased in membership.Today there are 22 associated tanneries, all of them operating in Tuscany, in the area between Pisa and Florence, and sharing the same passion for vegetable-tanned leather and the same standards of production. In the Tuscan Leather District vegetable-tanned leather is still produced following the traditional methods: turning raw hides into durable leather takes time and patience, and the skillful combination of technology and experience.

Il Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale nasce nel 1994 per volontà di un ristretto gruppo di conciatori toscani.

L’iniziativa riscuote subito grande consenso e, in breve tempo, il Consorzio vede aumentare considerevolmente il numero degli associati. Oggi sono 22 le concerie consorziate, tutte operanti nell’area del distretto conciario toscano e accomunate dalla produzione di pellame conciato al vegetale. Questa parte di Toscana compresa fra le province di Firenze e Pisa rappresenta, infatti, l’unico distretto italiano di produzione di pellame conciato al vegetale di alta qualità. Un pellame completamente naturale che si adatta a qualsiasi tipologia produttiva e che richiede tempo e maestria artigiana per essere trasformato in un connubio tra tecnologia e tradizione.

Aloft developers and technicians explored the acoustic designs that architects and engineers use to maximise the absorption of noise and reduce the sound wave reflections and thought: “If it works with sound, it may work with the ground!”.

Inspired by those beautiful geometric lines, with curved and rounded shapes and their up and downs they obtained something unique. An “innovative” sole design, where different kinds of cleats have specific features. Some work as claws, others like suction cups and some are simply plain. The final product fits to different levels of surface, clings even to the slipperiest ground and offers a perfect floor touch.

Ispirati da quelle belle linee geometriche, con forme curve e arrotondate, con cavità e protuberanze, hanno ottenuto qualcosa di unico. The classic roots of Italian tanning and the sustainable luxury of Conceria Superior are blended together in the SS2021 pre-collection, which was presented this past December by this Santa Croce sull’Arno company with an exclusive event: a private and guided tour among the rooms of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence to see artistic representations of the Italian art of tanning, while also taking in the new Superior collection. Key to this event was the industrial manufacturing chain timeline STEFANO CAPONI AND TOMMASO SACCHI as seen from an artistic standpoint. The works of leading artists, in fact, often represented the leather accessories and garments typical of the luxury production of their times. The tradition of quality expressed and described in these artistic objects is reflected today in the productive abilities of modern-day tanneries, which are the direct descendants of the antique Tuscan tanning tradition.

Mondial Suole redesigns its competitive strategy THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW GENERAL MANAGER, ATTILIO MUCELLI, WAS FOLLOWED BY THE AGREEMENT WITH ANOTHER MARKET LEADER IN THE WORLD OF SOLES ANTICIPATING A POSSIBLE FUTURE MERGER For the Mondial group the last months of 2019 end with some important news. After the October decision to insert a general manager within its organisation, Delta S.p.A., an established player in the same sector, enters the share capital of Mondial Suole S.p.A., with a minority share.

According to Gianfranco Doria, founding partner and CEO of Mondial Suole, a company with over forty years of history in the production of shoe bottoms, “the idea to entrust the management of the group to Attilio Mucelli arised from the firm will of the shareholders to proceed with a significant reorganisation of the corporate structure and the organisational and industrial processes, an essential condition for continuing to successfully compete on domestic and international markets”.

The general manager’s commitment, in the first place, will be to prepare an industrial plan GIANFRANCO DORIA capable of defining a clear strategy to be pursued in the coming years. The plan will show the way to achieve a growing improvement in economic and financial performance of the entire group.

“On an operational level - says Attilio Mucelli - we are moving with a complete managerialisation of company functions and with the renewal of all internal processes. In particular, the greater organisational commitment is aimed at making the product development phase more effective, making the production process more efficient, streamlining the supply chain and strengthening the commercial action”.

Having Delta S.p.A. within the company structure strengthens the pursuit of the competitive strategy thanks to both the possible commercial and technical synergies that will be created. Furthermore, through an initial period of experimentation and active collaboration, the two companies aim to concretely evaluate the opportunity to merge into a single entity to better capture the opportunities that the market offers. In other words, the ultimate goal is to make the company, that will be founded from the merger, extremely interesting to attract the investment of a private equity fund and/or to be listed on the regulated stock market, thus ensuring the future continuation of the economic activity.

According to Luigi Lucentini, reference shareholder of Delta S.p.A., “the acquisition of shares in Mondial Suole S.p.A. must also be read from a propaedeutic perspective as to the entry of new funding sources or to a possible listing on the stock market.

The common will is to collaborate in view of a possible merger of the two companies, which would allow to reach both a dimensional level and a degree of efficiency consistent with what the market expects from operators in our sector”.

Attilio Mucelli further highlights that “the basic strategy pursued is that of product differentiation, thanks to the specific skills and specialisations present within the two companies. This will allow customers to always find the right creative proposal for their production needs and for big luxury brand to receive adequate responses to the constant solicitations of their creativity, both on a technical and industrialisation level of the product”.

Mondial Suole ridisegna la sua strategia competitiva ALLA NOMINA DEL NUOVO DIRETTORE GENERALE, ATTILIO MUCELLI, HA FATTO SEGUITO L’ACCORDO CON UN ALTRO LEADER DI MERCATO DEL MONDO SUOLE CHE PREFIGURA UNA POSSIBILE FUTURA FUSIONE Gli ultimi mesi del 2019 si chiudono per il gruppo Mondial con alcune importanti novità. Dopo la decisione di ottobre di inserire all’interno della propria organizzazione un direttore generale, entra nel capitale sociale di Mondial Suole S.p.A., con una quota di minoranza, la Delta S.p.A., affermato player del medesimo settore.

Secondo Gianfranco Doria, socio fondatore e Amministratore Delegato di Mondial Suole, azienda con oltre quaranta anni di storia nella produzione dei fondi per calzature, “la decisione di affidare la direzione del gruppo ad Attilio Mucelli è nata dalla ferma volontà degli azionisti di procedere con una significativa riorganizzazione della struttura societaria e dei processi organizzativi ed industriali, condizione essenziale per continuare a competere con successo sui mercati domestico e internazionali”.

L’impegno del direttore generale sarà, innanzitutto, quello di predisporre un piano industriale capace di definire una chiara strategia da perseguire nei prossimi anni. Il piano indicherà la strada per raggiungere un crescente miglioramento delle performance economiche e finanziarie dell’intero gruppo.

“Sul piano operativo – afferma Attilio Mucelli – ci stiamo muovendo con una completa managerializzazione delle funzioni aziendali e con il rinnovamento di tutti i processi interni. In particolare, il maggiore impegno organizzativo è rivolto a rendere più efficace la fase di sviluppo del prodotto, a far si che il processo produttivo sia più efficiente, alla razionalizzazione della supply chain e al rafforzamento dell’azione commerciale.”

Avere all’interno della compagine sociale anche Delta S.p.A. rafforza il perseguimento della strategia competitiva grazie alle possibili sinergie, sia di tipo commerciale sia tecniche, che si andranno a realizzare. Inoltre, è intenzione delle due aziende, attraverso un iniziale periodo di sperimentazione e attiva collaborazione, valutare concretamente l’opportunità di fondersi in un unico soggetto per catturare meglio le opportunità che il mercato offre. Serafini pays close attention to the market’s specific demands. As a matter of fact, the company has managed, once again, to provide the perfect solution to meet the needs of the safety, medical and sports footwear sectors by including in its wide range of product Microwork.

More specifically, Microwork is a skin-texture microfibre, available in two colours - black and white - and in two different thickness options - 1.6mm and 2.2mm. It’s distinctive trait lies in the top-notch technical, physical and mechanical properties when it comes to abrasion resistance, shock absorption and delamination - far superior to the standards set by the ISO 17698:2016 regulation.

Another pivotal characteristic of this product is the high breathability rate, as confirmed by the tests carried out in accordance with the EN 13634:2017 protocol, that put in the limelight a level of vapor permeability amounting to 2.9 mg (cm2/h) - a result three times higher than the regulatory parameter.

La sua particolarità è di avere delle elevate caratteristiche tecniche, fisiche e meccaniche in fatto di resistenza all’abrasione, al taglio da impatto, e delaminazione ben al di sopra rispetto alle norme ISO 17698:2016 che ne regolano gli standard.

This article was written with several objectives: • together with colleagues from ARSUTORIA school, we have tried to explain the technical characteristics and functions of the lining inside a shoe, • with ICEC, we have explored the world of chemical and physical tests, • together with some companies specialised in the production and marketing of linings, we have tried to understand how the market demands are evolving, • finally, we have interviewed spokepeople at two major companies of the sector and studied their point of view on the topic, in particular on the challenges that a shoe factory faces today when it comes to shoe linings.

Abbiamo scritto questo articolo con diversi obiettivi: • a quattro mani con i colleghi dell’ARSUTORIA school abbiamo provato a spiegare tecnicamente le caratteristiche e le funzioni della fodera all’interno di una scarpa, • con ICEC abbiamo approfondito il mondo dei test chimici e fisici, • assieme ad alcune aziende specializzate nella produzione e nella commercializzazione delle fodere abbiamo provato a capire come stanno evolvendo le richieste del mercato, • infine, siamo andati ad intervistare due portavoce di note aziende del settore e abbiamo approfondito il loro punto di vista sull’argomento in particolare sulle sfide che oggi affronta un calzaturificio quando si parla di fodere per scarpe.

This article is dedicated to shoe manufacturers who, day after day, are confronted with the use of many different materials. We hope, however, that it will also be read by designers who are already working in the footwear industry or want to work in it, by those who work in the retail world and are curious to understand how a lining can make the difference in a quality shoe and, why not, also by end consumers who are curious to know more about the shoes they buy and use, even from a more technical perspective.

Questo articolo è dedicato a chi produce scarpe che, ogni giorno, si confronta con l’utilizzo di tanti materiali diversi. Ci auguriamo, però, venga letto anche da designer che già operano nel settore delle calzature o che desiderano avvicinarvisi, da chi lavora nel mondo del retail ed è curioso di capire quanto una fodera può fare la differenza in una scarpa di qualità e, perché no, anche da qualche consumatore finale curioso di saperne di più sulle scarpe che acquista ed utilizza, anche sotto un profilo più tecnico.

THE LINING OF A SHOE IS THE PART IN CONTACT WITH THE FOOT The first and most important function of the lining is to stay in contact with the foot. The foot remains enclosed inside the shoe for hours, sometimes not moving, sometimes moving. The foot may sweat and perspiration is one of the main mechanisms by which the human body regulates the temperature. From these first simple considerations, you can already understand that: • the material that comprises the lining must guarantee the health of the wearer: the skin must not come into contact with any harmful substance, • the lining must not fade, but above all, there must be no transfer of colour from the lining to the foot or the sock, • the softness of the lining gives a feeling of comfort to the foot, • any creases or seams in critical points can cause blisters on the foot, • the breathability of the lining is fundamental.

LA FODERA DI UNA SCARPA È LA PARTE A CONTATTO CON IL PIEDE La prima e più importante funzione che svolge la fodera è quella di stare a contatto con il piede. Il piede resta chiuso all’interno della scarpa per ore, a volte fermo, altre volte in movimento. Alcune volte il piede suda e la traspirazione è uno dei meccanismi principali del corpo umano per regolare la temperatura. Già capite, da queste prime semplici considerazioni, che: • il materiale di cui è fatta una fodera deve garantire la salute di chi la indossa: la pelle non deve entrare in contatto con alcuna sostanza dannosa, • la fodera non deve scolorire ma soprattutto non ci deve essere trasferimento di colore dalla fodera al piede o alla calza, • la morbidezza della fodera trasmette una sensazione di comfort al piede, • qualsiasi piega o cucitura in punti critici può creare vesciche sul piede, • la traspirabilità della fodera è un elemento fondamentale.

DO ALL SHOES HAVE A LINING? Actually no. There are so-called “unlined” shoes in which the foot is in contact with the inside of the upper, the so-called ‘flesh’ side, if the upper is made of leather. Unlined shoes are worn especially during the summer season, when the shoes are deliberately deconstructed and very soft (for example, moccasins).

In theory, all models of shoes can be made without a lining or with a half-lining. When there is no lining in the construction of a shoe, it will clearly be necessary to pay more attention to some elements of the upper: • choose suitable materials that retain their shape (e.g. thicker leather), • evaluate the seams in direct contact with the foot, • carefully work the inside of the upper material (e.g. remove any residual hair from the flesh side of the leather) AESTHETICS AND RECOGNISABILITY At the beginning of this article, we said that the lining is invisible. This is true when we wear the shoe, however, the lining becomes clearly visible when the shoe is displayed in a shop window. Evidently the more ‘open’ the shoe, the more visible the lining: the lining of a sandal is almost entirely visible, while in a laced shoe – which is usually displayed in the shop window with the toe and the outer side in the foreground – the most visible parts of the lining will be the part on the inside and the one in contact with the heel.

Designers are very attentive to the aesthetics of the lining, and one of the most important elements of the shoe is found right on the lining: the brand logo.

A variety of colours are used for the lining: ivory and biscuit-coloured as well as black are the most common, but fashion today requires many different shades and the possibility to offer a wide range of colours in a short time is becoming a critical success factor.

THE LINING AND THE FOOT THAT GOES IN AND OUT OF THE SHOE You must have all worn a boot or an ankle boot at some point. So you know how complicated it is to slide your foot inside, and just how difficult it is to get it out, especially if the boot leg does not have a zipper. Here, then, is another important function of the lining: it must make it easy to slide your foot in and out of the shoe. For this reason the lining is usually smooth: you may have noticed that suede is not used for the lining. The only part of the lining where a material that creates a little friction is used the so-called heel pocket i.e. the part of the lining that wraps around the heel and that has the function of preventing the foot from coming out of the shoe while walking.

TUTTE LE SCARPE PREVEDONO UNA FODERA? In effetti no, ci sono scarpe cosiddette ‘sfoderate’ nelle quali il piede sta a contatto con la parte interna della tomaia, il lato cosiddetto ‘carne’ se la tomaia è fatta di pelle.

Si usano calzature sfoderate soprattutto durante la stagione estiva, quando le scarpe sono volutamente destrutturate, molto morbide (un esempio per tutti i mocassini).

Tutti i modelli di scarpe in teoria possono essere realizzati senza fodera o con una mezza fodera soltanto. Quando viene a mancare la fodera nella costruzione della scarpa sarà chiaramente necessario prestare maggiore attenzione ad alcuni elementi della tomaia: • scegliere materiali adeguati che mantengano la forma (es. pelli di spessore maggiore), • valutare le cuciture a diretto contatto con il piede, • lavorare in modo più raffinato l’interno del materiale di tomaia (es. togliere dal lato carne della pelle ogni residuo di pelo) ESTETICA E RICONOSCIBILITÀ Abbiamo scritto all’inizio di questo articolo che la fodera è invisibile. Ciò è vero quando indossiamo la scarpa, mentre, al contrario, la fodera diviene un elemento ben visibile quando la scarpa è nella vetrina di un negozio. Evidentemente più la scarpa è ‘aperta’, più la fodera è visibile: la fodera di un sandalo è visibile quasi

THE LINING HELPS GIVE TO STRUCTURE TO THE UPPER Walking and use in general tend to deform the shoe which, over time, loses its original shape. The material used for the lining and the way it is constructed help to determine how much the lining itself contributes to maintaining the shoe’s original shape. The amount of glue applied between the upper and lining also plays an important role: an excessive layer of glue may promote the formation of creases that appear mainly in the front part of the upper, where the foot bends. Years ago, it was usual to distinguish the materials used for the different parts of the lining: a softer cowhide was used in the front part of the lining for greater comfort and stiffer goatskin was used on the sides to counteract the natural widening of the area where the foot enters and exits the shoe.

What animal is a sheepskin?

Some say it’s a cross between a ram and a goat... in actual fact it’s a sheep coming mainly from Africa which has adapted its hair to the climate and environmental in which it lives, to the point of making it look like a goat. The technical name is ‘ovis aries.’ The sheepskin yields a skin that is larger than that of a goat, very full and with compact fibres: structured, but with a fine grain like that of the ram.

WHAT IS A LINING MADE OF? Different types of materials are used for the lining: leather, fabrics, technical or synthetic materials.

In higher priced elegant shoes, leather is traditionally used. Goat or sheepskin leather is generally synonymous with a quality lining. It is usually used in fine women’s footwear, but sometimes we also find these linings inside men’s shoes.

Calfskin, which is softer and has a slightly less robust structure, is frequently used in men’s shoes and sneakers made in Italy.

The leather used to construct the uppers of classic men’s footwear is thicker than the leather used for women’s footwear and therefore the lining does not have to contribute much to maintain the structure of the shoe. There is calf leather, the so-called ‘vacuum’ which after tanning is dried with a system that gives the fibres a particular structure, while preserving their softness.

Lower-priced shoes also use leather from other less prized animals, such as pig skin. This material, which is off-limits in shoes destined for Arab countries, has the unquestionable advantage of costing less, as well as being a leather with pores large enough to ensure greater breathability.

C’è chi dice sia un incrocio tra montone e capra… in realtà è una pecora proveniente prevalentemente dall’Africa che ha adattato il suo pelo al clima e all’ambiente in cui vive, fino a farlo assomigliare a quello di una capra. Dall’incrociato si ottiene una pelle di dimensione maggiore di quella di una capra, molto piena e dalle fibre compatte: strutturata, ma con un fiore fine come quello del montone.

I designer sono molto attenti all’estetica delle fodere e proprio sulla fodera si trova uno degli elementi più importanti della scarpa: la stampa del logo del brand.

I colori usati per le fodere sono i più vari: avorio e biscotto oltre che nero sono i colori più utilizzati, ma la moda oggi richiede tantissime diverse tonalità di colore e la possibilità di offrire un’ampia gamma di sfumature in tempi brevi sta diventando un fattore critico di successo.

LA FODERA E IL PIEDE CHE ENTRA ED ESCE DALLA SCARPA Vi sarà capitato di calzare uno stivale o un polacchino. Sapete dunque quanto è complicato far scivolare il piede all’interno e, altrettanto, quanto è difficile farlo uscire specialmente se il gambale non si può allargare con una chiusura lampo.

Ecco, dunque, un’altra funzione importante della fodera: deve facilitare l’ingresso e l’uscita del piede dalla scarpa. Per questo motivo la fodera è di solito liscia: avrete notato che non si usa pelle scamosciata per la fodera. L’unica parte della fodera nella quale si usa un materiale che crei un poco di attrito è la cosiddetta ‘camoscina’, cioè quella porzione di fodera che si trova ad avvolgere il tallone e che ha la funzione di evitare al piede di uscire dalla scarpa mentre si cammina.

LA FODERA AIUTA A DARE STRUTTURA ALLA TOMAIA La camminata e l’utilizzo in generale tendono a deformare la scarpa che, nel tempo, perde la sua forma originaria. Il materiale usato per la fodera e il modo in cui è stata costruita contribuiscono a determinare quanto la fodera stessa aiuti a mantenere la forma originaria della scarpa. Anche la quantità di colla applicata tra tomaia e fodera gioca un ruolo importante: a volte un eccessivo strato di colla favorisce la formazione di pieghe che compaiono principalmente nella parte anteriore della tomaia, laddove il piede flette. Anni fa si usava distinguere il materiale usato per le diverse parti della fodera: una pelle di bovino più morbida nella parte anteriore della mascherina per un maggiore comfort e una capra più rigida sui gambetti laterali per contrastare la naturale tendenza ad allargarsi della zona in cui il piede entra ed esce dalla scarpa.

DI CHE MATERIALI È FATTA LA FODERA Si usano diversi tipi di materiali per la fodera: pelli, tessuti e materiali tecnici o sintetici.

Nelle scarpe eleganti di fascia di prezzo più alta è tradizione utilizzare la pelle.

La pelle di capra o di incrociato è generalmente sinonimo di una fodera di qualità. È di solito usata nella calzatura da donna fine, ma a volte troviamo fodere di pelle ovina anche dentro le calzature da uomo.

Nella scarpa da uomo e nelle sneaker made in Italy viene usata frequentemente la pelle di vitello, più morbida dalla struttura leggermente meno robusta.

I cuoi usati per costruire le tomaie delle calzature classiche da uomo hanno spessori maggiori delle pelli usate per le scarpe da donna e dunque alla fodera è richiesto un minore contributo per mantenere la struttura della scarpa.

Esistono pelli di vitello, cosiddette ‘sotto vuoto’, che dopo la concia vengono

asciugate con un sistema che conferisce una particolare struttura alle fibre pur preservandone la morbidezza.

Nelle scarpe di fascia di prezzo più bassa si usano anche pelli di altri animali meno pregiati, come la pelle di maiale. Questo materiale, off-limits nelle scarpe destinate ai Paesi arabi, ha l’indubbio vantaggio di costare meno, oltre ad essere una pelle con pori di dimensione tale da assicurare una maggiore traspirabilità.

LINING AND BREATHABILITY In order for a shoe to be breathable, it must guarantee the possibility of dispersing sweat towards the outside. Therefore, all those processes that cover the grain of the leather and obstruct and hinder the passage of air and water (sweat) towards the outside should be avoided as much as possible. A heavy finishing layer sprayed on the leather or a foil applied on top of the grain are all factors that limit the breathability of the shoe, as well as an excessive layer of glue applied between the lining and upper.

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF THE LINING One of the construction details of high-end Italian shoes is the way in which the lining is worked during assembly: in quality shoes, the lining is first pulled over the last and then the upper is assembled. This process takes longer, but guarantees fewer creases and imperfections. The linings are usually basted with a very light layer of glue and joined to the upper by sewing the edges.

As already mentioned, it is essential not to apply too much glue between the lining and the upper. Although it may seem to help the workmanship by blocking the two materials together with glue, in actual fact it causes wrinkles that not even ironing can eliminate.

FODERA E TRASPIRABILITÀ Perché la scarpa sia traspirabile è necessario che sia garantita la possibilità di disperdere il sudore verso l’esterno. Vanno dunque evitate, per quanto possibile, tutte quelle lavorazioni che coprono il fiore della pelle andando ad ‘ostruire’ e ostacolare il passaggio di aria e acqua (sudore) verso l’esterno.

Un strato pesante di rifinizione spruzzato sulla pelle o una lamina applicata sopra il fiore sono tutti fattori che limitano la traspirabilità della scarpa, così come un eccessivo strato di colla applicato tra fodera e tomaia.

PROGETTAZIONE E PRODUZIONE DELLA FODERA Uno dei dettagli costruttivi del Made in Italy di alto livello è il modo in cui la fodera viene lavorata in fase di montaggio: nelle scarpe di qualità la fodera viene tirata per prima sulla forma e in un secondo tempo viene montata la tomaia. Un processo che richiede più tempo, ma che garantisce un minor numero di pieghe e imperfezioni. Le fodere, di solito, vengono imbastite con uno strato leggerissimo di colla e unite alla tomaia mediante una cucitura sui bordi.

Come già detto, è fondamentale non applicare troppa colla tra fodera e tomaia. Per quanto possa sembrare un aiuto alla lavorazione bloccare tra loro i due materiali con la colla, nella realtà determina grinze che nemmeno la stiratura riesce a eliminare.

TESTS AND CERTIFICATIONS The hottest and most current topic in the lining world is probably that of tests and certifications, which are increasingly requested by customers, especially major brands. Challenging activities both in terms of the time needed to carry out the tests and in terms of costs.

We discussed this with the ICEC, the Italian Certification Institute specialised in the leather area, created in 1994, and promoted by the Italian Association of Tanneries (UNIC), whose members also include several stakeholders in the leather industry, such as the associations of footwear and leather goods manufacturers.

What are the certifications that concern leather for linings?

“There are two levels of certification: system certifications, which cover the entire company (environmental, social, quality, etc.) and product certifications. The latter focuses on different aspects: • the traceability certification, which describes the origins of the raw material, • Made In Italy certification, which verifies where the main stages of the tanning production process were carried out, • the certification according to the UNI 10594 standards for leather to be used in the footwear industry is a voluntary certification specifically for companies, which carries out laboratory tests, both chemical and physical, to investigate the characteristics of leather intended for the production of shoes and, therefore, also linings.”

Does the UNI 10594 specification have specific requirements for lining leather?

“The specifications of the standard refer to leather in general, i.e. no different limits are set for the specific use of leather as a lining. Although, in fact, since lining leather comes in direct contact with the skin of the wearer of the shoe, it would make sense to pay attention to this specific aspect. This is a different matter if we go into the subject of a company’s specifications where, for the same test, more stringent and precautionary limits can be set depending on the type of use of the leather.”

What developments are planned for the new version of this ISO standard?

“The new UNI10594:2019 version has reduced the substances to be monitored to formaldehyde (and the limit of contact with the foot has been reduced to 75 ppm) and to penta and tetra chlorophenyl. Tests for chromium VI and azo dyes are no longer foreseen. The physical tests required by the standard are: abrasion resistance (dry and wet), permeability to water vapour, fastness of dry colour, colour deterioration with artificial sweat, discharge of colour to rubbing with artificial sweat, colour fastness to perspiration”.

I TEST E LE CERTIFICAZIONI Il tema più attuale e caldo rispetto al mondo fodera è probabilmente quello dei test e delle certificazioni, sempre più richieste dai committenti, in particolare dai grandi brand. Attività impegnative sia in termini di tempi richiesti per la realizzazione dei test, sia per i costi.

Ne parliamo con ICEC, l’Istituto Italiano di Certificazione specializzato per l’area pelle, creato nel 1994, promosso dall’Associazione delle Concerie Italiane (UNIC), ma che conta fra i suoi soci diversi stakeholder del settore della pelle come, per esempio, le associazioni dei fabbricanti di calzature e pelletteria.

Quali sono le certificazioni che riguardano le pelli per fodere “Ci sono due livelli di certificazione: le certificazioni di sistema, che riguardano l’intera azienda (a carattere ambientale, sociale, qualità, etc.) e le certificazioni di prodotto. Queste ultime hanno focus diversi: • la certificazione della tracciabilità descrive le origini della materia prima grezza, • la certificazione del made in Italy verifica dove sono state realizzate le fasi prevalenti del processo produttivo conciario, • la certificazione secondo standard UNI 10594, per pelli con destinazione d’uso calzatura, è la certificazione specifica, cui le aziende si sottopongono su base volontaristica, che va ad indagare mediante prove di laboratorio, sia chimiche che fisiche, le caratteristiche delle pelli destinate alla produzione di scarpe e, quindi, anche le fodere.”

Il capitolato della UNI 10594 ha dei requisiti specifici per le pelli da fodera?

“Nel capitolato della norma si parla di pelle in generale, cioè non vengono fissati limiti diversi per l’utilizzo specifico come fodera. Anche se, in effetti, essendo la pelle per fodera a diretto contatto con la pelle di chi indossa la scarpa sarebbe sensato prevedere delle attenzioni specifiche. Discorso diverso se si entra nel tema dei capitolati aziendali dove, per il medesimo test, possono essere fissati limiti più stringenti e cautelativi a seconda del tipo di utilizzo della pelle”.

Quali evoluzioni sono previste per la nuova versione di questa norma ISO? “Dalla nuova versione UNI10594:2019 le sostanze da monitorare sono state ridotte alla formaldeide (ed è stato ridotto il limite per contatto con il piede a 75 ppm) e al penta e tetra clorofenolo. Non sono più previste le prove per il cromo VI e per gli azocoloranti. I test fisici previsti dalla norma sono: resistenza all’abrasione (secco e umido), permeabilità al vapore acqueo, solidità del colore a secco, degradazione del colore con sudore artificiale, scarico del colore allo strofinio con sudore artificiale, solidità del colore alla perspirazione”.

MESI Tannery boasts a curious and fascinating story that Alberto Drandi tells us: “It all began in 1907, in a small factory in Borgaro Torinese. The former Scamosceria Italiana began producing leathers for cleaning carriages and silverware without imagining that a century later suede would become an irreplaceable tool for perfect car drying. Thirty years later, joining InALBERTO DRANDI dustria Marocchini based in Monza, it started working on Moroccan leather to embellish hats, working with the grain of sheepskin which later would become a versatile fashion item, appreciated by the most renowned manufacturers of shoes and leather goods”.

Today Mesi is a family-run tannery, now in its fifth generation, which has a production of over 1 million leathers per year, exclusively sheep from New Zealand which is particularly soft and highly absorbent. The leather is purchased in pickels and then processed internally: this has allowed the development of two independent production lines. On one side chamois, worked with fish oil for car cleaning; on the other, full grain leather for the creation of linings, especially for shoes and bags. The request came from the same brands for which the company worked by providing leathers for the production of wallets and small leather goods. The development of the lining business, which today represents around 40% of its turnover and which keeps growing, allows the company to work in both segments (car cleaning and linings) and has favoured the improvement of the product, seeking softer leather which is also pleasant to the touch.

In the field of linings, today the demands of the brands focus on metal free leather (since 2016 the company has developed this tanning type), on the colour stability and its correspondence with what the designer requires, and on the lightness (very important for bags).

The footwear segment is also in need of a breathable and natural-looking product, which lends itself to different processes.

“We strongly believe - concludes Drandi - in the growth of the lining market because we think that, in the next 2 or 3 years, there will be a strong return to leather in the luxury sector and an attention from the customer towards a product of intrinsic value, which justifies its high price”.

La Conceria MESI vanta una curiosa, quanto affascinante storia che ci racconta Alberto Drandi: “Tutto ha inizio nel 1907, in un piccolo stabilimento di Borgaro Torinese.

La allora Scamosceria Italiana iniziò a produrre pelli per la pulizia delle carrozze e degli argenti senza immaginare che un secolo più tardi la pelle scamosciata sarebbe diventata uno strumento insostituibile per la perfetta asciugatura delle automobili.

Trent’anni più tardi, unendosi all’Industria Marocchini di Monza, avviò la lavorazione dei marocchini per la guarnitura dei cappelli, lavorando con il fiore della pelle di montone che poi sarebbe diventata un versatile articolo di moda, apprezzato dai più rinomati produttori di calzatura e pelletteria”.

Oggi Mesi è una conceria a conduzione famigliare, giunta alla quinta generazione, che conta una produzione di oltre 1 milione di pelli all’anno, esclusivamente ovine dalla Nuova Zelanda, particolarmente morbide e dall’alto potere assorbente. Il pellame è acquistato in pickel e poi lavorato internamente: questo ha permesso lo sviluppo di due linee di produzione indipendenti. Da una parte il chamois, lavorato con olio di pesce per la pulizia dell’auto; dall’altra la pelle pieno fiore per la realizzazione di fodere, soprattutto per calzature e borse. La richiesta è nata dalle stesse griffe per cui l’azienda lavorava fornendo pelli per portafogli e piccola pelletteria. Lo sviluppo del business delle fodere, che oggi rappresenta circa il 40% del fatturato e che è in crescita, permette all’azienda di lavorare in entrambi i segmenti (pulizia auto e fodere) e ha favorito il miglioramento del prodotto, ricercando un pellame più morbido e piacevole al tatto.

Nell’ambito fodere, oggi le richieste delle griffe si focalizzano su pellami metal free (dal 2016 l’azienda ha messo a punto questo tipo di concia), sulla stabilità del colore e la sua corrispondenza con quanto richiesto dallo stilista, e sulla leggerezza (molto importante per le borse).

Per le calzature c’è anche la necessità di un prodotto traspirante e dall’aspetto naturale, che si presti a diverse lavorazioni.

“Crediamo molto - conclude Drandi - nella crescita del mercato delle fodere perché riteniamo che nei prossimi 2 o 3 anni si assisterà a un forte ritorno alla pelle nell’ambito del lusso e a un’attenzione da parte del cliente verso un prodotto di valore intrinseco, che giustifichi il pagamento di un prezzo elevato”.

We meet Massimo Pantanetti, Sales Manager of the company. “The lining sector is a market with limited margins that is sustainable only by making significant volumes. Today, companies offering these items are confronted with quality. It is essential to keep the product level high to reduce the risk of customer complaints”.

Pantanetti identifies in the Certifications the last decade’s turning point: “Meanwhile they have become imperative in order to work with the most important customers as investments to be faced are considerable. Being in line with REACH requests is not sufficient, we have to deal with more restrictive customer specifications and work with test laboratories all over the world.”

Traceability is another hot topic that is becoming increasingly common amongst customers. “There are two reasons that make this topic complex”, continues Pantanetti “on the one hand in some countries the traceability back to the farm of origin is objectively difficult, on the other hand the selection of suppliers is one of the assets of companies like ours that unwillingly reveal details which are the result of years of work and research”.

“Another important issue is that of the relationship with customers: today we are involved much more in their production processes and it is essential to be able to support customers by helping them to fine-tune how to use our products”.

Paolo Nardini is Primorpelli’s Product Manager, a company with over 30 years of experience in the production of uppers for medium and medium-low price shoes. The company specialises in the use of sheep and goat kins from Central Africa, leathers that have a good thickness (0.8 - 1 mm), an excellent resistance to rubbing, are well breathable as well as having the advantage of a very competitive price. Items that have attracted the attention of luxury brands for the creation of linings, in particular for sneakers. Thus, in 2015 the company launched a division dedicated to linings, which today represents approximately 20% of the its turnover, which is continuously growing.

“As far as linings are concerned, customers’ requests insist in particular on technical requirements, such as the leather’s heat resistance (even above 120 degrees) to carry out particular processes, or corrective tanning to reduce their flaws. On a stylistic level, opaque variants are the most requested ones but the exact colour correspondence to the masters agreed with the style offices is particularly important.

There is also growing attention towards sustainability issues and in particular towards metal free hides, also for footwear in the medium and low segment, especially in Northern Europe markets. The company has chosen to face this challenge by purchasing pickel hides and developing ecological tanning processes. LWG certification was another of the fundamental steps of the company’s strategy”.

La conceria di Monte San Pietrangeli, fondata nel 1994, è specializzata nell’import/ export di pelli di maiale, capra, incrociato e vitello. Gli articoli per fodera costituiscono l’80% del giro d’affari dell’azienda. Una azienda che punta sulla rapidità dei tempi di fornitura.

Incontriamo Massimo Pantanetti Sales Manager della azienda. “Il settore delle fodere è un mercato di margini limitati che è sostenibile solo facendo dei volumi importanti. Le aziende che offrono questi articoli oggi si confrontano sulla qualità. È fondamentale mantenere alto il livello del prodotto per ridurre i rischi di contestazione da parte dei clienti”.

Pantanetti individua nelle Certificazioni il punto di svolta dell’ultimo decennio: “Ormai è divenuto un imperativo per lavorare con i clienti più importanti e gli investimenti da affrontare sono considerevoli. Non basta essere in linea con le richieste del REACH, dobbiamo confrontarci con capitolati più restrittivi dei clienti e lavorare con i laboratori di test di tutto il mondo”.

La tracciabilità è un altro tema caldo sempre più all’ordine del giorno con i clienti.

“Ci sono due motivi che rendono complesso questo argomento” - prosegue Pantanetti “da un lato in alcuni Paesi è oggettivamente difficile risalire fino all’allevamento, d’altro lato la selezione dei fornitori è uno degli asset delle aziende come le nostre che poco volentieri rivelano dettagli che sono frutto del lavoro e della ricerca di anni”.

“Altro tema importante è quello del rapporto con i clienti: oggi siamo coinvolti molto di più nei loro processi produttivi ed è fondamentale essere in grado di affiancarli, aiutandoli a mettere a punto le modalità di utilizzo dei nostri prodotti”.

Paolo Nardini è Product Manager di Primorpelli, un’azienda con oltre 30 anni d’esperienza nella produzione di tomaie per calzature di prezzo medio e medio basso. L’azienda si è specializzata nell’utilizzo di pelli ovocaprine provenienti dal Centro-Africa, pelli che presentano un buon spessore (0,8 - 1 mm), un’ottima tenuta allo sfregamento e sono ben traspiranti oltre ad avere il vantaggio di un prezzo molto competitivo. Articoli che hanno attirato l’attenzione delle griffe del lusso per la realizzazione di fodere, in particolare per le sneaker. Così, nel 2015, è stato avviata una divisione dedicata alle fodere, che oggi rappresenta circa il 20% del fatturato aziendale, in continua crescita.

“Per quanto riguarda le fodere, le richieste dei clienti insistono in particolare su requisiti tecnici, come la tenuta del pellame al calore (anche sopra i 120 gradi), per realizzare particolari lavorazioni, oppure correttivi di concia per ridurne il rumore. A livello stilistico, le varianti opache sono le più richieste ma è soprattutto fondamentale l’esatta corrispondenza del colore ai master concordati con gli uffici stile.

Registriamo anche un’attenzione crescente verso i temi della sostenibilità e in particolare verso i pellami metal free, anche per le calzature del segmento medio e basso, specialmente nei mercati del Nord Europa. L’azienda ha scelto di affrontare questa sfida acquistando le pelli in pickel e mettendo a punto i processi di concia ecologica. La certificazione LWG è stato un altro dei passaggi fondamentali della strategia della azienda”.

The company specialises in calfskin for uppers intended for medium and medium-high price footwear, sold both in raw and wet-blue. Today, linings represent around 40% of our turnover. “Brands today require above all linings with high resistance to rubbing, and absolute compliance with the requests of the style office. In general, there is a huge attention to defects, which especially comes from important brands, and a demand for natural-looking leathers”.

The company is also working to be able to offer metal free hides in the short term having registered increasing attention to this theme.

Known for the trade and the production of grain and split leather for footwear, handbags and clothing, DTL mainly treats bovine, goat and pig hides.

The latter in particular for the lining segment.

“Operating in the lining sector is really complex.

It is among the most controlled sectors given the contact of the material with the foot. In Germany, for example, there are very strict controls to investigate any possible irregularities in the lining.

The most pressing requests on the market? A metal free tanning. And this is not just required by brands, but also by the entire Northern European market segment”.

Tarricone also highlights another issue related to sustainability: tracing the origin of the animal. “Other requests are breathability and naturalness in substance and appearance”.

A threat to leather lining? “Synthetic material is stealing several market shares and not only in the low end segment, but also at the top end, thanks to new materials, yet with high quality and with good breathability features”.

L’azienda sta anche lavorando per essere in grado di offrire pellami metal free a breve, avendo registrato una attenzione crescente a questo tema.

TIRRENA - Roberto Gioacchini (Export Manager) A well-known tannery based in the Marche region is one of the major Italian suppliers of footwear linings (which account for 80% of the turnover), as well as leather for uppers and leather goods. “The reduction of lead times is fundamental for our customers: they always request ready-made goods for almost immediate deliveries of several types and colours”.

The ability to ensure consistency in quality is also a top priority.

“We work with the brands with which we mainly, but non only, develop customised projects. We also serve other lower level brands thanks to our always ready and full stocked warehouse”. Tirrena’s main market is undoubtedly Europe, followed by South Africa, India, Far East, Central America.

“Recently, many have been asking for chromium-free items. As far as we are concerned, at this moment, we can offer this type of product on lining of pig skin, but we are working to extend the concept also to other types of leather”. Among the main problems that a tannery for linings faces today, Giocchini highlights the variegated multitude of specifications: “It would not be bad if we could build a standard that would allow us to compare ourselves with a single list of criteria valid for all customers”.

Nota per il commercio e la produzione di pelli fiore e crosta per calzatura, borsetteria e abbigliamento, DTL tratta principalmente pelli bovine, caprine e suine. Queste ultime in particolare per il segmento fodera.

“Operare nel settore fodere è veramente complesso. È tra i settori più controllati visto il contatto del materiale con il piede. In Germania, per esempio, ci sono controlli molto severi su eventuali irregolarità a livello di fodera.

Le richieste più pressanti del mercato? Una concia metal free. E non sono solo le griffe a richiederlo, ma anche tutta la fascia di mercato Nord Europea”.

Tarricone evidenzia anche un altro tema legato alla sostenibilità: il tracciamento dell’origine dell’animale. “Altre richieste sono traspirabilità e naturalezza nella sostanza e nell’aspetto”.

Un pericolo per la fodera in pelle? “Il sintetico sta rubando parecchie quote di mercato e non solo nella fascia bassa, ma anche sull’alto di gamma grazie a nuovi materiali comunque di qualità e con delle buone doti di traspirabilità”.

La nota conceria marchigiana è tra i maggiori fornitori italiani di fodere per calzature (che incidono per l’80% sul fatturato), oltre che di pellami per tomaia e per pelletteria. “Per i nostri clienti è fondamentale la riduzione dei lead time: ci chiedono sempre merce pronta a magazzino per consegne quasi immediate di tante tipologie e colori”.

Anche la capacità di assicurare costanza nella qualità è fra le priorità principali.

“Lavoriamo con le griffe con cui sviluppiamo principalmente progetti personalizzati, ma non solo. Serviamo anche altri marchi di livello più basso grazie al nostro stock sempre pronto e fornitissimo”. Il principale mercato di Tirrena è senza dubbio l’Europa, a cui seguono Sud Africa, India, Far East, Centro America.

“Ultimamente molti chiedono articoli privi di cromo. Per quanto ci riguarda, in questo momento, possiamo offrire questa tipologia di prodotto sul maiale da fodera, ma stiamo lavorando per estendere il concetto anche su altre tipologie di pelli”. Tra i principali problemi che una conceria per fodere oggi deve affrontare Giocchini evidenzia quello dei capitolati così variegati: “Non sarebbe male se si riuscisse a costruire uno standard che ci consentisse di confrontarci con un’unica lista di criteri valida per tutti clienti”.

Guerino, the artisans of the lining for luxury footwear WE TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF THE SECTOR WITH THE LOMBARDY-BASED TANNERY THAT HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY, ONE OF THE VERY FEW ITALIAN COMPANIES SPECIALISED IN LUXURY LININGS In 1960 Guerino Foieni, an employee in the Cedrati tannery, decided to open his own business. At the beginning, the family was called upon to work in the factory, but Guerino was determined to become an entrepreneur rather than a factory worker elsewhere.

Thus, the “Conceria Guerino” was born, with the collaboration of his children, Giacomo and Giovanna.

Today, the company is guided by the third generation, Alessandro Foieni with his wife Nicla and his sister Magda. Together they continue to run the company with the spirit of a family and under the watchful eye of Giacomo, who visits the company every day to offer his 60 years of experience.

Well known by the best shoe manufacturers and the world’s leading brands for the production of high quality linings (goat, sheepskin, chrome-free and laminated) for luxury footwear, the Guerino tannery operates in its headquarters of Robecchetto con Induno (in the province of Milan) and produces more than 6 million square feet of leather per year.

Alessandro, who are your main customers?

“The high-end sector. We work with the twelve best brands in the world and we aim for the highest quality and excellent service, while focusing on traceability and sustainability. Our “stylistic code” is an extraordinary capacity for customisation”.

What are the real challenges of the lining industry?

“Firstly, to provide excellent and constant quality, and not just quantities. Secondly, speed. Fashion is increasingly faster and the development, industrialisation and production times are shorter, while the controls, tests and certifications have increased, and this takes time.

We have chosen to organise ourselves with a continuous warehouse stocked with colour bases prepared in advance, which we then finish according to the customers’ specifications thanks to a colour refinement technology, in a single day. This makes us faster on average than our competitors. Last June, we started a project to double the spaces of the company: we will have new machinery and barrels for an even larger warehouse to meet the challenges of chrome-free production in Italy”.

Is the lining industry declining as much as leather for uppers?

“Our production has doubled over the last 3 years. The only problem today is that the market is very concentrated and we all depend heavily on a limited number of customers. A positive situation because it allows us to create strong partnerships, but potentially risky for others”.

Is it difficult working with big brands?

“In principle, no. There aren’t many of us in the company, but we are all highly trained professionals, able to assist the customer with any need. As happens to everyone, we find ourselves negotiating prices and sometimes we have the feeling that our interlocutors do not place the right value on everything that happens “behind the scenes.” The lining is a critical component where quality means healthiness, workability and aesthetics. Large, highly structured organisations have a traditional separation between the style office and production and we are in the middle. Consequently, it is our job to find the solutions to meet the demands of both”.

Is there a secret for continuing to be appreciated by the most important brands?

“To identify yourself with a well-defined product and be recognised as specialists for that type of article. We have chosen to focus on sheepskin and goat skins of the highest

quality. We select the finest raw materials, paying more in order to obtain only the best and we collaborate with our suppliers to ensure that we get a high quality product. Our items can even cost up to € 30. We prefer being recognised as an expensive supplier, of an exclusive product, rather than be confused with others.

And we also want to be recognised as a reliable partner”.

The world seems invaded by sneakers. Do you think this trend is a threat to those who produce quality linings?

“No, quite the contrary. It has stimulated us to think about new articles. Today our proposals include sheepskin linings with competitive prices designed for this market segment. This type of lining offers extraordinary breathability compared to other materials. We have also worked on colour chemistry to obtain a softer grain and opaque shades, requested by sneakers, using finer molecules that further promote the evaporation of sweat from the foot”.

Going back to the classic product, what are the main trends?

“Natural products are the most popular right now. Style offices prefer it. This is a great opportunity for us because leather with little coverage must be of superior quality. In addition, shoe factories today are looking for leather that is easy to cut.

Some say that this is a sign of less expertise within companies, but certainly it is an advantage for those like us who focus on high quality”.

A recurring theme in the leather world is traceability. How do you deal with it?

“The leather supply chain today is a long one and there are only a few very large groups of operators who are fully integrated upstream of the supply chain. Companies of our size must bear in mind that sheep and goat skins arrive in Italy already tanned and it is difficult for us to have total visibility right up to the breeding. In Africa, where we buy the sheepskin skins, we have created a strong collaboration with a large group that allows us to have direct control over many processing stages. But even in this case we are not able to have visibility of the breeding and slaughtering because our supplier in turn buys the raw material as per tradition from a very fractional fabric of very small breeders. Only one source offers us complete traceability of the goats, from the slaughterhouse to wet-blue tanning, but the amount produced is not enough to meet the request. For this reason, we have started a collaboration in India with a company in Kolkata, where we have brought machinery and good practices to improve the quality of the product and follow the processing from the skin. Ultimately, a lot is being done to improve the quality of the product, but a lot still needs to be done on complete traceability”.

Alessandro, chi sono i vostri principali clienti?

“Il settore dell’alto di gamma. Lavoriamo con i dodici migliori brand del mondo e puntiamo alla qualità più alta, oltre che su un servizio eccellente, curando tracciabilità e sostenibilità. La nostra “cifra stilistica” è una straordinaria capacità di personalizzazione”.

Quali sono le vere sfide del mondo fodera?

“In primo luogo, fornire ottima e costante qualità, e non solo le quantità. Il secondo punto è la rapidità: la moda è sempre più veloce e i tempi di sviluppo, industrializzazione e produzione si riducono mentre i controlli, i test e le certificazioni aumentano e questo richiede tempo.

Noi abbiamo scelto di organizzarci con un magazzino di continuativi e di basi colore preparati in anticipo che poi finiamo su misura delle esigenze dei clienti grazie ad una tecnologia di messa a punto del colore, in un solo giorno. Questo ci rende mediamente più veloci dei nostri concorrenti. Lo scorso giugno, è partito il progetto per raddoppiare gli spazi dell’azienda: avremo nuovi macchinari e botti per un magazzino ancora più grande ed affrontare la sfida della produzione di free-chrome in Italia”.

Anche il mondo fodera è in calo come la pelle per tomaia?

“Noi negli ultimi 3 anni abbiamo raddoppiato la produzione. L’unica criticità oggi è che il mercato si è molto concentrato e tutti noi dipendiamo molto da un numero limitato di clienti. Una situazione positiva perché ci permette di creare partnership forti, ma potenzialmente rischiosa per altri”. È difficile lavorare con i grandi brand?

“In linea di massima no. In azienda non siamo in tanti, ma siamo tutti professionisti molto preparati, in grado di affiancare il cliente in ogni sua esigenza. Come capita a tutti, ci troviamo a discutere sui prezzi e a volte abbiamo la sensazione che i nostri interlocutori non diano il giusto valore a tutto quello che “succede dietro le quinte”.

La fodera è un componente critico nel quale la qualità significa salubrità, lavorabilità ed estetica. Le grandi organizzazioni molto strutturate poi hanno una tradizionale separazione tra ufficio stile e produzione e noi ci troviamo nel mezzo ed è nostro compito trovare le soluzioni per venire incontro alle istanze di ambedue”.

C’è un segreto per continuare a farsi apprezzare dai brand più importanti?

“Identificarsi con una tipologia di prodotto ben definita ed essere riconosciuti come gli specialisti di quella tipologia di articoli. Noi abbiamo scelto di puntare su Incrociati e capre di altissima qualità. Selezioniamo le materie prime migliori, pagandole di più per poter ottenere solo le scelte migliori e collaboriamo con i nostri fornitori per fare in modo che a noi arrivi un prodotto molto qualitativo. I nostri articoli possono arrivare a costare anche più di 30 €. Preferiamo essere riconosciuti come un fornitore caro, ma di un prodotto ricercato, piuttosto che essere confusi con altri. E vogliamo essere riconosciuti come dei partner affidabili”.

Il mondo sembra invaso dalle sneaker. Pensate che questa tendenza sia una minaccia per chi produce fodere di qualità ?

“No, anzi. Ci ha stimolati a pensare nuovi articoli. Oggi abbiamo tra le nostre pro-

poste anche delle fodere di incrociato con prezzi competitivi pensate per questo segmento di mercato. Usare questo tipo di fodere però permette una traspirabilità straordinaria rispetto ad altri materiali. Abbiamo anche lavorato sulla chimica del colore per ottenere mano morbida e tonalità opache, richieste dalle sneaker, usando delle molecole più fini che favoriscono ulteriormente la traspirazione del sudore dal piede”.

Tornando al prodotto classico, quali sono le tendenze principali?

“In questo momento è molto apprezzato il naturale. Gli uffici stile lo prediligono.

Per noi questa è una grande opportunità perché la pelle poco coperta deve essere qualitativamente superiore. Inoltre, le fabbriche di scarpe oggi cercano pelli che diano poche difficoltà al taglio. C’è chi dice che questo è un segno di una minore competenza all’interno delle aziende ma certamente per chi come noi è posizionato sulla qualità alta si tratta di un vantaggio”.

Un tema ricorrente nel mondo pelle è la tracciabilità. Come lo affrontate?

“La filiera della pelle oggi è lunga e gli operatori completamente integrati a monte della filiera sono solo pochi gruppi molto grandi. Per chi ha le nostre dimensioni bisogna tenere presente che le pelli ovicaprine arrivano in Italia già conciate ed è difficile per noi avere totale visibilità fino all’allevamento. In Africa dove acquistiamo gli incrociati abbiamo creato una forte collaborazione con un grande gruppo che ci assicura un presidio diretto su molte fasi della lavorazione. Ma anche in questo caso non riusciamo ad avere visibilità dell’allevamento e della macellazione perché il nostro fornitore a sua volta acquista la materia prima come da tradizioni da un tessuto molto frazionato di piccolissimi allevamenti. Solo da una provenienza abbiamo la tracciabilità completa di capretti dal macello al wet-blue, ma la quantità prodotta non basta a soddisfare la richiesta. Per questo motivo abbiamo avviato una collaborazione in India con una azienda di Calcutta dove abbiamo portato macchinari e buone pratiche per migliorare la qualità del prodotto e seguire la lavorazione dal pelo. In definitiva si fa molto per migliorare la qualità del prodotto ma sulla tracciabilità completa c’è ancora molto da fare”.

“Calfskin lining is widely used in men’s shoes. Calf is a skin with a very soft and enveloping touch. Very high quality calves are available on the market, suitable for Fratelli Rossetti’s shoe level. However, we must confess a preference for the use of goat linings also in the construction of elegant men’s footwear. We use both goat and sheepskin, types of leather that have extraordinary features when used for linings: in particular an unparalleled balance between the strength of the structure, given by the tenacity of the fibres, and the softness of leather lending a feeling of comfort around the foot”.

In your opinion what makes one leather for linings better than others?

“In the first place, the lining must breathe well: this, in our opinion, is the most important feature. It is essential to work with very natural leathers, where the grain is well uncovered: whatever is added above the grain of the skin limits the natural properties of this extraordinary material.

Secondly, the lining must give structure to the shoe: an important aspect especially in winter shoes, which are more constructed and in which the lining plays an important role also in the entry and exit of the foot. Finally, the lining must have the ability to maintain its aesthetic characteristics unchanged over time: in a luxury men’s shoe a lining cannot lose colour, stain socks or the foot of the wearer, let alone darken with use”.

What is, therefore, the secret to obtain all these features at the same time?

“Choosing the right suppliers is crucial. The best tanneries are those that manage to ensure the supply of the best leathers but, above all, those able to guarantee the correct balance between the chemical colour fixing and the maintenance of the natural characteristics of the leather, in particular breathability. And they are able to maintain this quality over time”.

Quali tipologie di fodera vengono impiegate nelle scarpe da uomo della Rossetti?

“Nella scarpa da uomo viene molto utilizzata la fodera di vitello. Il vitello è una pelle con una mano molto morbida e avvolgente. Sul mercato sono disponibili vitelli di qualità molto alta, adeguati al livello delle scarpe Fratelli Rossetti. Dobbiamo però confessare una predilezione per l’utilizzo delle fodere di capra anche nella costruzione della calzatura elegante da uomo. Utilizziamo sia la capra sia l’incrociato, tipologie di pellami che hanno caratteristiche straordinarie quando vengono impiegate come fodere: in particolare un impareggiabile equilibrio tra la robustezza della struttura, data dalla tenacia delle fibre, e la morbidezza del pellame che conferisce la sensazione di confort intorno al piede”.

Cosa rende una pelle per fodera migliore di un’altra a vostro giudizio?

“In primo luogo, la fodera deve traspirare bene: questa, a nostro avviso, è la caratteristica più importante. È fondamentale lavorare con pelli molto naturali, dove il fiore sia ben scoperto: qualsiasi cosa venga aggiunta sopra al fiore della pelle limita le proprietà naturali di questo materiale straordinario. In secondo luogo, la fodera deve dare struttura alla scarpa: un aspetto importante soprattutto nelle scarpe invernali, che sono più costruite e in cui la fodera gioca un ruolo importante anche nell’ingresso e nell’uscita del piede. Infine, la fodera deve avere la capacità di mantenere inalterate le sue caratteristiche estetiche nel tempo: in una scarpa maschile di lusso una fodera non può perdere il colore, non può macchiare le calze o il piede di chi la indossa e tantomeno non si deve scurire con l’utilizzo”.

Quale è dunque il segreto per ottenere tutte queste caratteristiche allo stesso tempo?

“Scegliere i fornitori giusti è decisivo. Le concerie migliori sono quelle che riescono ad assicurarsi l’approvvigionamento delle migliori pelli ma, soprattutto, sono quelle in grado di garantire il corretto bilanciamento fra il fissaggio chimico del colore e il mantenimento delle caratteristiche naturali della pelle, in particolare la traspirabilità. E sono in grado di mantenere questa qualità nel tempo”.

ROVEDA Enrico Macchi What are the major challenges that Roveda’s quality control department has to face?

“We work with brands that produce at least six collections a year, in addition to shoes for capsules and special events. In each collection, style offices often change materials and Roveda must guarantee that they all comply with the law and with the chemical and physical parameters required by our customers”.

What are Roveda’s most used types of linings?

“As we produce elegant shoes for women the most used type of lining is goat. We also use linings of sheepskin sheeps and lambs”.

How do you make sure that the leathers you receive for your linings are adequate?

“Each batch of leather that arrives at Roveda must be accompanied by a chemical analysis carried out by an accredited third-party laboratory that certifies compliance with the RSL (Restricted Substance Lists) of the brand. Since linings are in direct contact with the foot, today it is essential to check that the leathers used do not contain harmful chemicals. Together with chemical analyses, our supplier tanneries carry out physical tests in their internal laboratories to guarantee the performance of the materials they supply us. Physical tests are repeated at Roveda’s internal laboratory as an additional control level”.

From a physical point of view, what should be checked when it comes to linings?

“Lining leathers are much more subjected to frictional rubbing during walking than leathers for uppers. It is therefore essential to verify that these leathers cannot be damaged by abrasion even in the presence of sweat. There must be no colour loss or transfer to the sock and foot. We also must keep in mind that even lining leathers can be printed or laminated and this causes potential concern. We also check that the colour is homogeneous along the leather section”.

When are all these controls made?

“Industrialisation is the critical quality control phase, that is, the one that precedes the production of the sample. As far as possible, we try to anticipate some controls already in the sampling phase, but we only know exactly in the industrialisation phase what materials will be used. Moreover, in this phase the production process is finalised and it is important to verify how hides will react to the physical stresses of the assembly: in particular to temperature influences and tractions”.

Quali sono le sfide maggiori che affronta il controllo qualità di Roveda?

“Lavoriamo con marchi che producono almeno sei collezioni l’anno, oltre alle scarpe per le capsule e gli eventi speciali. In ogni collezione gli uffici stile cambiano spesso i materiali e la Roveda deve garantire siano tutti conformi alle norme di legge e ai parametri chimici e fisici richiesti dai nostri clienti”.

Quali sono le tipologie di fodere più utilizzate in Roveda?

“Producendo scarpe eleganti da donna il tipo di fodera più utilizzata è la capra. Utilizziamo anche fodere ovine di incrociato e agnellate”.

Come fate a controllare che le pelli per fodere che ricevete siano adeguate?

“Ogni lotto di pelli che arriva in Roveda deve essere accompagnato da un’analisi chimica realizzata da un laboratorio terzo accreditato che certifichi il rispetto delle RSL (Restricted Substance Lists) del marchio. Essendo le fodere a diretto contatto con il piede è oggi imprescindibile verificare che le pelli utilizzate non contengano sostanze chimiche che possano nuocere. Assieme alle analisi chimiche, le concerie nostre fornitrici realizzano, presso i loro laboratori interni, dei test fisici per garantire le performance dei materiali che ci forniscono. I test fisici vengono ripetuti nel laboratorio interno della Roveda come ulteriore livello di controllo”.

Dal punto di vista fisico cosa deve essere controllato quando si parla di fodere?

“Le pelli per fodere sono molto più soggette a un’azione di sfregamento durante la camminata rispetto alle pelli per tomaia. È dunque fondamentale verificare che queste pelli non possano essere danneggiate dall’abrasione anche in presenza di sudore. Non ci deve essere perdita o trasferimento di colore verso la calza e il piede. Dobbiamo, inoltre, tenere presente che anche le pelli per fodera possono essere stampate o laminate e questo introduce potenziali criticità. Andiamo anche a verificare che il colore sia omogeneo lungo la sezione della pelle”.

In quali momenti vengono fatti tutti questi controlli?

“La fase critica per il controllo qualità è quella dell’industrializzazione, cioè quella che precede la messa in produzione del campionario. Cerchiamo, per quanto possibile, di anticipare già in fase di campionario alcuni controlli, ma è nella fase di industrializzazione che sappiano esattamente quali materiali verranno utilizzati. In questa fase, inoltre, viene messo a punto il processo produttivo ed è importante verificare come le pelli reagiranno alle sollecitazioni fisiche del montaggio: in particolare all’azione della temperatura e alle trazioni”.
