Cinderella’s dream

AdA KoKosAr’s luxury footweAr brAnd, Midnight 00, uses A PVC CAsing to CreAte fAirytAle shoes, PArty And midnight bells Proof fashion designer, fashion editor and fashion consultant... in the past experiences with Calvin Klein, diane von furstenberg, & other stories and Cesare Paciotti... the American Ada Kokosar (born in italy) tells a true fairytale with her project midnight 00, a collection of footwear produced in italy precisely by Cesare Paciotti. the designer who takes inspiration from nature and thinks of a modern Cinderella when she creates her collections, approaches fashion thanks to her tailor grandmother, who used to create beautiful miniature dresses for her dolls: “that’s when i began to be fascinated by fashion design, especially clothes”. so how was the footwear brand born? “in 2017 i was asked to consult for the italian footwear brand Cesare Paciotti, to help him renew the style. that’s what gave me the idea of drawing something more abstract and different, a range that was bold and at the same time romantic”. to recreate the glass slipper of the “Cinderella” fairytale, together with Cesare Paciotti they decided to use PVC. A successful debut that convinced the designer and her partner marco Calcinario, to ride the wave. midnight 00 shoes become, thus, surprising and recognisable thanks to the undisputed “wow” effect created by the original harmony of volumes, fantasy and romanticism.

Il marchIo dI calzature dI lusso dI ada KoKosar, MIdnIght 00, utIlIzza un Involucro In Pvc Per realIzzare scarPe da favola, a Prova dI festa e camPane dI mezzanotte stilista, fashion editor e consulente moda… alle spalle esperienze con calvin Klein, diane von furstenberg, & other stories e cesare Paciotti… l’americana ada Kokosar (nata in Italia) racconta una vera e propria favola con il suo progetto midnight 00, una collezione di calzature prodotta in Italia da cesare Paciotti, appunto. la designer che prende ispirazione dalla natura e pensa a una moderna cenerentola quando crea le sue collezioni, si avvicina alla moda grazie alla nonna sarta, solita creare bellissimi abiti in miniatura per le sue bambole: “fu allora che iniziai a essere affascinata dal fashion design, soprattutto di abiti”.

Quindi come è nato il brand di calzature? “nel 2017 mi è stato chiesto di fornire una consulenza al marchio di calzature italiano cesare Paciotti, per aiutarlo a rinnovare lo stile. da lì l’idea di disegnare qualcosa di più astratto e diverso, una linea che fosse audace, eppure romantica”.

Per ricreare la scarpetta di vetro della fiabesca cenerentola, con cesare Paciotti decisero di usare il Pvc. un debutto di successo che ha convinto la designer e il suo socio marco calcinario, a cavalcare l’onda. le scarpe midnight 00 divengono, così, sorprendenti e riconoscibili grazie all’indiscusso effetto “wow” suscitato dall’originale armonia di volumi, fantasia e romanticismo.

The emerging brand of super posh fooTwear arrives on The web wiTh a new websiTe easy and intuitive. The new una sera website allows access to a sophisticated universe in which the boudoir state of mind is expressed through the status symbol of the shoe. una sera shoes, in fact, express a conscious and independent femininity, a ladylike style created for those who want to indulge in the pleasure of a private moment, but which is also perfect for a party.

To give life to this made in italy brand, paola gennari santori and nicola dolci worked with a team of master craftsmen recreating shoe models that come from the “handmade” and express a model of sustainable luxury, in contrast with the fast fashion.

The “made to order” section is very interesting, where it will be possible to participate in the digital Trunk show: events that will offer a unique shopping experience allowing customers, for a limited period of time, to buy items of the new collections just before they arrive at the store.

Il nuovo sito web del marchio una sera permette di accedere a un universo sofisticato nel quale il boudoir state of mind si esprime attraverso lo status symbol della scarpa. le scarpe una sera, infatti, esprimono una femminilità consapevole e indipendente, uno stile ladylike creato per chi vuole concedersi il piacere di un momento privato, ma perfetto anche per un party. per dare vita a questo brand made in Italy, paola gennari santori e nicola dolci hanno lavorato con un team di maestri artigiani ricreando modelli di calzature che nascono dal “fatto a mano” ed esprimono un modello di lusso sostenibile, in controtendenza rispetto al fast fashion. molto interessante la sezione “made to order” dove sarà possibile partecipare ai digital trunk show: eventi che offriranno un’esperienza unica di acquisto consentendo alla clientela, per un periodo limitato di tempo, di comperare gli articoli delle nuove collezioni poco prima che arrivino in negozio.

UGG collaborates with Heron Preston

The new Heron Preston x UGG® capsule debuTed on The caTwalk aT paris Men’s Fashion week Thanks to the common californian origins and the passion for quality materials and excellent craftsmanship, uGG® (division of deckers brands) and the designer heron preston have joined together to create a unique collaboration of its kind. Three models of the uGG® heritage - a brand founded in 1978 by an australian surfer on the california coast - have been revisited with the aesthetic and fresh use of the typical preston colour to give life to the heron preston x uGG® capsule, which was presented at the palais de Tokyo on the occasion of the night shift parade during paris Fashion week.

The unisex collection consists of three uGG® models - classic short, classic Mini and Tasman - revisited from preston’s unique point of view: translucent rubber and nylon soles in contrast with suede.

The partnership between heron preston and uGG® began at the last april’s coachella Music Festival for which preston renewed, with its touch, the famous classic Mini boots by uGG® for a limited edition of only 75 pairs, destined to close friends, for the republic records event in palm springs.

Chie Mihara boots

Born and raised in Brazil, at the age of 18 Chie Mihara moved to Japan, where she studied fashion design and where she started working as pattern maker and design assistant of Junko Koshino. At age 22, it’s time for her to go to New York to study sculpture... soon, however, nostalgia for fashion sets in and this leads therefore to the brilliant idea of mixing the two worlds, creating a shoe collection. She enrolls at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to study accessories design and manufactures by hand more than 90 pairs of shoes: “I had discovered my passion!”. Her very personal style, which does not consider trends, arises from a continuous experimentation of shapes, from playing by fun with colours and concepts. Without forgetting comfort. At MICAM she presented the autumn/winter collection 2019-20, in which numerous proposals of ankle boots stand out, from the most colourful and ironic ones to versatile and evergreen models: leather ankle boots with side buckle and medium heel, patchwork leather ankle or soft leather boots.

• Nata e cresciuta in Brasile, Chie Mihara, a 18 anni, si trasferisce in Giappone dove studia fashion design e dove inizia a lavorare da Junko Koshino come disegnatrice di modelli e assistente alla progettazione. A 22 anni è il momento di New York dove studia scultura… presto, però, la nostalgia per la moda si fa sentire e, così, nasce la brillante idea di mescolare i due mondi realizzando una collezione di scarpe. Si iscrive al Fashion Institute of Technology di New York per studiare design di accessori e realizza più di 90 paia di scarpe a mano: “Avevo scoperto la mia passione!”. Il suo stile molto personale, che non considera le tendenze, nasce da una continua sperimentazione di forme, dal giocare con colori e concetti con divertimento.

Senza dimenticare il comfort. A MICAM ha presentato la collezione autunno/inverno 2019-20, in cui spiccano le numerose proposte di ankle boots, da quelle più colorate e ironiche a modelli versatili ed evergreen: tronchetti in pelle con fibbia laterale e tacco medio, stivaletti in pelle effetto patchwork o in morbida pelle.

FuoriSalone 2019: Rucoline’s male world Melissa and Campana becomes celebrate 15 years of RCLN PROGETTO RUCOLINE, the Italian brand of couture accessories partnership During the design week in Milan (from 9th to 14th April), Melissa will present an artistic installation that celebrates the partnership with the Campana brothers, Fernando and Humberto, reaching the important milestone of 15 years of collaboration. Drawing inspiration from crochet techniques, the designer duo has developed an intricate and light texture that perfectly combines with the unique technology of Melissa and its raw material, plastic.

The installation, created by the Campana Brothers in collaboration with the Brazilian NGO Projeto Arrastão, involved several collectives for the production of crochet weft pieces, joined by the Campana brothers in the final work that will be exhibited during the show. The project is intrinsically connected to the presentation of the new Melissa+Campana “Crochet” collection, composed of three new products with a characteristic crochet texture.

• Ad aprile, a Milano, durante la settimana del design (dal 9 al 14), Melissa presenterà un’installazione artistica che celebra la partnership con i fratelli Campana, Fernando e Humberto, che ha raggiunto l’importante traguardo dei 15 anni di collaborazione.

Traendo ispirazione dalle tecniche crochet, il duo di designer ha sviluppato una texture intricata e leggera che si combina alla perfezione con la tecnologia unica di Melissa e la sua materia prima, la plastica. L’installazione, creata dai Fratelli Campana in collaborazione con l’ONG brasiliana Projeto Arrastão, ha coinvolto diversi collettivi per la realizzazione di pezzi di trama crochet, uniti dai fratelli Campana nell’opera finale che sarà esposta durante il salone. Il progetto è intrinsecamente connesso alla presentazione della nuova collezione Melissa + Campana “Crochet”, composta da tre inediti prodotti dalla caratteristica trama uncinetto.

If the difference between the main RUCOLINE collection and the RCLN capsule brand, dedicated to younger customers, remains for the woman, the male universe will be exclusively represented by RCLN PROJECT, designed for the second season by David Motta, creative director of the brand since March 2018. The line speaks to a niche “crew”, to a young world, that looks to the future without forgetting the importance of having values in which to believe and roots to which to return. This concept of “Retro Future” is found in the aesthetics through which young people communicate their lifestyle.

• RUCOLINE, il marchio italiano di accessori couture dal forte spirito urbano, presenta, per l’autunno/inverno 201920, una nuova strategia per le sue linee di prodotto. Se per la donna rimane la differenza tra la collezione principale RUCOLINE e il marchio capsule RCLN, dedicato a una clientela più giovane, l’universo maschile sarà rappresentato esclusivamente da RCLN PROGETTO, progettato per la seconda stagione da David Motta, direttore creativo del marchio da marzo 2018. La linea parla ad una “crew” di nicchia, a un mondo giovane, che guarda al futuro senza dimenticare l’importanza di avere dei valori in cui credere e delle radici alle quali tornare.

Questo concetto di “Retro Future” si ritrova nell’estetica con cui i giovani comunicano il proprio stile di vita.

Among the foreign visitors in attendance, the united states (+35%) and canada (+38%) led the way, demonstrating a greater interest in italian and european products. in terms of europe, instead, russia, france, and germany were characterised by a downtrend, while spain’s numbers rose by +10%. “we’re ending the 87th edition of micAm with the understanding that our event has been transformed into an incubator of styles and trends, always in line with the market’s demands. not only an essential business platform for companies, it is also a trendsetter, providing an overview of new consumer trends – declared Annarita Pilotti, President of Assocalzaturifici, the association responsible for the event’s organisation – today, at micAm, the very best offering of international footwear finds room, thanks to the presence of prestigious producers coming from five continents: one thousand different facets of elegance and quality are made available to international buyers who prefer a trendy product in the mid-range”. in addition to the fw 2019-20 footwear collections, the fair was also an important stage for various initiatives and the launchings of projects and events. it hosted the institutional visit of deputy Prime minister luigi di maio at its inauguration, an occasion during which Annarita Pilotti spoke on behalf of the italian footwear manufacturing industry, asking for a reduction of the tax wedge and a cutback on the costs of labour, two issues that are slowing down the growth of italian companies.

Innovation and dialoguing with new generations guide Brazilian Leather editorials A nEw MoVEMEnT In CoMMunICATIon foR BRAZIL’S LEAThERS IS BEGInnInG In 2019 Directed by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) to incentivize Brazilian leather participation in international markets, the Brazilian Leather project produced two new photo shoots promoting the image, attributes, and differentials of Brazil’s industry around the world.

The concepts dialogue with Brazilian culture, trends in fashion and communication, and especially with new generations of consumers. The campaign will now set the tone for materials put together by Brazilian Leather for participation in international fairs like stands, digital content, folders, magazine ads, and others.

VÊNUS BRASILEIRA (BRAZILIAN VENUS) The editorial seeks to rescue long-told and sometimes forgotten stories, with pirarucu leather - a Brazilian original - as the protagonist of each image. It’s a connection between Brazil’s cultural and historical signs, with the same classical expression and composition that’s present in movements like the Renaissance.

The campaign’s narrative presents pirarucu leather and Brazilian women in a story that speaks of power, lightness, representativeness, and beauty. The set was based on real scenarios, presenting colors and forms of native flora and the pirarucu ecosystem in its composition. Elements such as the Amazon River, the indigenous character Iracema (by the well-known author José de Alencar), Iara and Iemanjá (from Brazilian culture), and the native Amazonian plant Vitória Régia are all represented in the editorial.

CANVAS Much like a blank canvas, leather provides the possibility to create nearly any element. This idea was the basis for designing the Canvas editorial, in which a connection with Millenials and Gen-Z was sought through young casting and its aesthetic proposal. The bodies and blue sky direct attention to the article, which is the protagonist of the campaign. Styling is composed of pieces of bovine leather modulated to the body like clothing, proposing an editorial in pairs of photos that gain strength and together tell a story. The images contemplate the airs of the 1990s - with a bold, glam look- features that reinforce the richness of leather’s texture, irreverence (the gen-Z mood), and emphasizing the diversity and versatility of leather. Generally best known for classic tones (like brown and black), leather can also be created in a deep range of patterns, colors, densities and textures.

VÊNUS BRASILEIRA (VENERE BRASILIANA) L’editoriale intende salvare vecchie storie, a volte dimenticate, riguardanti la pelle di pirarucù – una peculiarità brasiliana – vera protagonista di ogni immagine. Si crae un legame tra i simboli culturali e storici del Brasile, con corrispettivi classici presenti in movimenti come il Rinascimento. Il tema della campagna introduce la pelle di pirarucù e le donne Brasiliane in una storia che parla di potere, delicatezza, rappresentatività e bellezza. L’ambientazione è stata basata su scenari reali, presentando nella sua composizione colori e forme della flora locale e l’ecosistema del pirarucù.

Elementi come il Rio delle Amazzoni, il personaggio indigeno di Iracema (creato dal famoso autore José de Alencar), Iara e Iemanjá (appartenenti alla cultura brasiliana) e la pianta autoctona amazzonica Vitória Régia sono tutti rappresentati nell’editoriale.

CANVAS Quasi come una tela vuota, il pellame dà la possibilità di creare qualsiasi elemento. Questa idea è stata la base per l’ideazione dell’editoriale Canvas, in cui si è cercato un collegamento tra Millennial e Generazione Z, utilizzando un casting giovane e rispettando le sue proposte estetiche. I corpi e il cielo blu attirano l’attenzione sull’articolo, che è il protagonista della campagna. Lo stile è costituito da pezzi di pelle bovina adattata al corpo come un vestito, proponendo un editoriale in coppie di fotografie che si rafforzano e al tempo stesso raccontano una storia. Le immagini contemplano gli atteggiamenti degli anni ‘90 – con un look audace e seducente – caratteristica che rafforza la ricchezza e la consistenza del pellame, l’insolenza (il mood della Generazione Z) sottolineando la varietà e la versatilità della pelle. Generalmente più nota per le tonalità classiche (come marrone e nero), la pelle può essere anche realizzata in una vasta gamma di motivi, colori, densità e consistenze.

A truly international selection that will not fail to inspire the over 9,500 professional visitors expected at Düsseldorf.

Plus, revolving around the show will be an accompanying line-up of events, presentations and discussions that will contribute to the appeal of the show, reconfirming it as a meeting place between international producers and buyers coming from all over Europe.

Among the focuses of this edition will be sustainability, the protagonist in the presentation by Oeko-Tex, while also playing an important role in the Junior Award promoted by HDS-L (the Federal Association of the German Footwear and Leather Goods Industry), which awards the most innovative projects in the production of shoes, with this year’s theme based on ‘Sport meets fashion – open minded’. The other theme is digitalisation, which will allow for a more ‘connected’ experience at the fair, thanks to new digital tools at the main entrances of “Alte Schmiedehallen”, “Blankstahlhalle” and “Edelstalhlhalle”, tools that will even be available inside the shuttles and at the shuttle stops. The last focus is naturally dedicated to fashion, with the forecasts of MODEUROP, the official platform of the DSI-German Shoe Institute, and the calendar of fashion shows taking place at “Kaltstahlhalle” , where the participation of Marc Cain, Högl, Peter Kaiser and the Italian Tosca Blu have already been confirmed.

the eu-Japan economic partnership Agreement (epA) involves a turnover equal to one-third of the global gdp, impacting 635 million consumers in both the european and Japanese markets. for the old continent, the agreement will be applied to 99% of the products and services exported to Japan, for a total value of 86 billion euros. According to the estimates made by analysts, thanks to this agreement, this figure should rise by at least another 13.2 billion euros, while allowing european businesses to save an additional one billion euro.

Among the product groups that will benefit from the elimination of these trade barriers is footwear, which up until today, had great difficulty in exporting to Japan because of oppressive import tariffs (equal to 30%) and a penalising system of quotas. negotiations for lowering the tariffs in this sector were anything but easy: already under discussion since 2013, the first obstacle they found was the time-honoured tradition and well-respected profession of expert Japanese cobblers: “in the end, we arrived at a satisfying compromise – comments cleto sagripanti, president of cec, the european confederation of the footwear industry – the duties on footwear will immediately decrease to 21% and will then gradually be eliminated within a period of ten years”. for italian footwear, which is first in the classification of european footwear exports to Japan, the new agreement opens up a market with great potential: “between duties and quotas, for years, italian exports to Japan have remained fixed at 3 million pairs – declared Andrea brotini, the Vice president of Assocalzaturifici also in charge of Asian markets, who we previously spoke with at micAm86 – we can’t help but look with favour upon the agreement recently concluded. nevertheless, i fear that even if from an official point of view, we are moving towards the liberalisation of market access, from a distributive standpoint, not all the problems will be quickly resolved. the

And what about the close ties between the italian and Japanese cultures? doesn’t the shared love for beautiful and well-made products help footwear sales anymore? “today, youths have lost interest in these values and are more interested in spending their money on technology than fashion, - replies giuseppe mazzarella – while the older adult generations, those who are familiar with and appreciate our product, are bombarded by media-induced panic concerning the crisis and prefer to save their money.

marco salani, sales agent in Asia for the boemos footwear brand, also confirms the dramatic change in the Japanese market: “i have noted great changes – he declares – footwear is a product that is bought less frequently by distributors and department stores, and increasingly by chains of apparel. importers have also reduced their purchases in italy and increasingly address their needs to Vietnam. the most significant drop has been recorded in the mid-range: the shoes that sell are either low-cost or luxury label. As boemos, we continue to work in this market, even if it has become more difficult. instead of participating in shoes from italy tokyo, we prefer to meet our customers one-on-one, so that we can work in serenity, while also respecting Japanese customs. for us, the epA will change very little: for there to be a true change, a true reversal must occur, with a clear recovery in the consumer market. even fashion is of no help to us: if there was a clearer trend it would be easier to sell. instead, when everything is fashionable, it’s as if nothing were new”. even entrepreneur stefano gamba, owner of the self-named footwear brand, does not expect great changes in the Japanese market for the moment: “i can confirm that the epA will not make a big difference for made in italy in the short-term. it will not kick off the much-awaited trend reversal. Japanese distribution is going through a difficult moment and made in italy prices are not competitive. Just look at store windows: it’s a race to see who can offer the lowest price. it is unavoidable that italian ‘beautiful and well-made’ products feel the effects. the elimination of tariffs could be helpful, but the window of ten years is too long for it to make any difference today”.

ha cambiato drasticamente il sistema distributivo e, di conseguenza, ha ridotto il mercato per il prodotto italiano”. anche marco salani, agente per l’area asia del calzaturificio boemos, conferma il drammatico cambiamento del mercato giapponese: “Ho notato dei profondi cambiamenti – dichiara – la calzatura è un prodotto che si acquista sempre meno dai distributori e nei department store, e sempre più nelle catene d’abbigliamento. gli importatori, poi, hanno diminuito gli acquisti in italia e si rivolgono sempre più spesso in vietnam. il calo più sensibile si è registrato sulla gamma media: si vendono le scarpe a basso prezzo o, altrimenti, il lusso. noi come boemos continuiamo a lavorare sul mercato, anche se si è fatto più difficile. invece di partecipare a shoes from italy tokyo, preferiamo incontrare i nostri clienti one-to-one, per lavorare in tranquillità e rispettare l’etichetta giapponese. a noi l’epa cambierà ben poco: perché ci sia un vero cambiamento occorre una svolta, che ci sia una decisa ripresa dei consumi. anche la moda non ci aiuta: se ci fosse un trend più definito sarebbe più facile vendere. invece, quando va di moda tutto, è come se non ci fosse nulla di nuovo”. anche l’imprenditore stefano gamba, titolare dell’omonimo calzaturificio, non attende grandi cambiamenti dal mercato nipponico per il momento: “posso affermare che l’epa non farà una grande differenza per il made in italy nel breve periodo. non ci sarà l’attesa inversione di tendenza. la distribuzione in giappone sta vivendo un momento difficile e i prezzi del made in italy non sono competitivi. basta vedere le vetrine dei negozi: è una rincorsa al prezzo più basso. inevitabilmente il bello e ben fatto italiano ne risente. l’eliminazione dei dazi potrà dare una mano, ma la finestra temporale di dieci anni è troppo lunga per far sentire i suoi effetti fin da oggi”.

Italian footwear in Japan: export data

in 2017, made in italy exported 2.5 million pairs of footwear to Japan for a value of 200.9 million euros, in a downtrend equal to -8.6% in quantity and -5.9% in value. the beginning of 2018 was also marked by a negative trend, with the performance of the first five months at -3% in volume and -9.8% in value. the persisting negative trend resulting from the 2013 crisis recorded important losses all the way up to 2017, with -27% in quantity and -9% in value, while to the contrary, the average price per pair increased by 24%: thus, the leading role played by italian designer labels in Japanese distribution, was confirmed. of the total volume exported, around 70% is made up by shoes with a leather upper.

nel 2017 il made in italy ha esportato in giappone 2,5 milioni di paia di calzature per un valore di 200,9 milioni di euro, segnando -8,6% nei quantitativi e -5,9% nei valori. in negativo si attesta anche l’avvio del 2018, con la performance dei primi cinque mesi al -3% in volume e -9,8% in valore. il trend ribassista perdura dalla crisi del 2013 e fino a tutto il 2017 ha comportato perdite nell’ordine del -27% nei quantitativi e del -9% in valore con, per contro, un apprezzamento deciso del valore medio al paio, aumentato del 24%: una conferma del primato delle griffe italiane nella distribuzione nipponica.
