QMAN: geometries, colour and passion for Made in Italy BORN IN CANADA, BUT RAISED IN ITALY, DESIGNER VERONICA QUARTERMAN IS THE CREATOR OF QMAN, THE COSMOPOLITAN, GLAMOUR, AND LUXURY BRAND OF BAGS. IN OUR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, WE DISCOVER THE INFLUENCES AND INSPIRATIONS BEHIND HER PASSION FOR ACCESSORIES, THE CONTENTS OF HER SS21 COLLECTION AND FUTURE PROJECTS Veronica, please tell us a little about yourself, your background, the studies, and the experiences that influenced you in becoming a designer. Where does your passion for bags come from?

“Ever since I was a little girl, I closely observed and was fascinated by the creations of my mother, a stylist and painter, which led me to undertake my own experiments: starting from used clothing and accessories, I created new ones and I was quite happy with them. From there, I decided to further explore this creativity by undertaking an educational pathway in the Fashion industry, which led to my degree in Costume and Fashion from the Università di Cassino”.

When did you decide to found your own brand? What have been the most important moments for you since then, what you might define as turning points that convinced you that you were on the right path?

“We founded it in 2015. Undoubtedly, when we made our first sales to customers who, to this day, continue to purchase from us with real satisfaction. For me, this is a genuine pleasure, which repays the great efforts made in this job”.

Who are your customers? How would you describe them?

“My customers are a wide variety of ages, but they all share the same common trait of being strong and decisive: they do not look for self-confidence in the brand, but rather require something more, something that makes the difference in allowing them to stand out with originality”.

Do you imagine a specific woman wearing your outfits before designing them, a kind of muse?

“For me, the muses of the past include Grace Kelly, not so much for her beauty, which was an indisputable virtue, but for her class and femininity, and Marilyn Monroe for her sex appeal and light-heartedness. However, there are many others and the list of all those I’ve admired would be too long…”

From where does the inspiration for your collections arise?

“You could say the inspiration behind my collections arrives ‘in spurts”: there is something that enters my heart instantaneously and immediately takes shape. Then, I find what is needed to work on this concept, in terms of materials and colours. Our artisans find my creations a bit difficult to develop, but for me that is an ‘added value’: I like geometrical and rigid shapes, hues that are often matching in two or three colourways, patterns, the underside of prints, etc.”.

What other passions do you have besides fashion?

“Being immersed in the nature I love, travelling, discovering new places, cultures, foods and people, and obviously designing, designing, designing”.

Can you describe your SS21 collection to us in terms of materials, accessories, and models?

“The SS21 collection is named ‘Cocktail Party’. It is an ode to lightness in absolute contrast to the current period we are currently experiencing, which would have us be less social, closed in our homes more often, with travel now seeming a kind of utopia. The focus is on the future and the reintroduction of social life without any fears or obstacles. It is a highly colourful collection, and every bag is inspired by and named after a specific cocktail. For example, there is the “Pink Lady” or “Black Russian” QMini... The light summer-like materials are a mix of straw and/or raffia coloured in wonderful shades and matched with premium cowhide in sparkling colours. Obviously, the logoed linings are in exquisite fabric and the metal details and accessories

are the very best quality. The materials and production are 100% Made in Italy”.

What are the next steps – creative or market-related – for your brand? Do you have any new projects or ideas in mind?

“I have a number of them in mind. I would like to enrich our collection with other accessories, creating also a men’s collection, and including a few items of apparel. I would also like to include a charitable project of solidarity to help people in difficulty”.

One last slightly “nosey” question: do you have a favourite bag in your latest collection…?

“Although I am still quite undecided on this question – you must understand that I love them all-, the QLively is my favourite followed by the QMini”.

Com’è nata la passione per le borse?

“Fin da quando ero piccola osservavo le creazioni di mia madre stilista e pittrice e ovviamente ne ero affascinata, così ho iniziato diverse sperimentazioni: partendo da capi ed accessori usati ne creavo di nuovi e mi piacquero molto. Da lì ho voluto approfondire il tutto tramite un percorso di studi nel settore Moda, arrivando a diplomarmi in Costume e Moda all'Università di Cassino”.

Quando ha deciso di fondare il suo marchio? Quali sono stati i momenti più significativi da allora, quelli che potrebbe definire punti di svolta che l'hanno convinta di essere sulla strada giusta?

“Lo abbiamo abbiamo fondato nel 2015. Sicuramente quando abbiamo avuto le prime vendite da clienti che tuttora ci acquistano con vera soddisfazione, questo per me è il vero piacere, ciò che ti ripaga dell’impegno che questo lavoro comporta”.

Chi sono le sue clienti, come le descriverebbe?

“Le mie clienti hanno diverse età ma hanno in comune il fatto di essere forti e decise: non cercano confidenza grazie al marchio, ma vogliono qualcosa in più, qualcosa che faccia la differenza facendole notare nell’originalità”.

Immagina una donna specifica che indossa i suoi pezzi prima di disegnarli, una sorta di musa?

“Le muse del passato sono per me Grace Kelly, non tanto per la bellezza, che ovviamente era una sua indubbia virtù, ma per la sua classe e femminilità, e Marilyn Monroe per il suo sex appeal e l’aria di leggerezza. Ma ce ne sono tante altre e la lista di tutte quelle che ho amato sarebbe troppo lunga...”.

“Ne ho diversi, vorrei arricchire la nostra collezione di altri accessori ed inserendo anche una collezione uomo, poi passare a pochi capi di abbigliamento e, non ultimo, vorrei poter inserire un progetto di aiuto umanitario per persone in difficoltà”.

Una domanda "indiscreta": ha una borsa preferita della sua ultima collezione...?

“Seppur molto indecisa a riguardo - mi comprenda, le amo tutte-, la QLively è la mia preferita, a seguire la QMini”.

Da dove nasce l’ispirazione per le sue collezioni?

“Le mie collezioni prendono ispirazioni potrei dire “a getto”: c’è qualcosa che mi entra nel cuore in un istante e subito prende forma. Poi, trovo ciò che mi serve ad elaborarle, intendo materiali e colori. I nostri artigiani trovano le mie creazioni un po’ complesse da sviluppare, ma quello per me è un “plusvalore”: mi piacciono le forme geometriche e rigide, le sfumature spesso in abbinamenti bi o tricromatici o le fantasie, il verso delle stampe, ecc.”.

Quali sono le sue passioni al di là della moda?

“Stare immersa nella natura che adoro, viaggiare, conoscere luoghi, culture, cibo e persone e ovviamente disegnare, disegnare, disegnare”.

Ci può raccontare la collezione SS2 a livello di materiali, accessori e modellerie?

“La collezione SS 21 è denominata “Cocktail Party”. È un inno alla leggerezza in assoluto contrasto con il periodo attuale che ci vuole meno sociali, più chiusi in casa e dove il viaggio sembra ormai un’utopia. Con uno sguardo al futuro verso la riapertura alla vita sociale senza timori od ostacoli. È una collezione molto colorata, ogni borsa è ispirata ad un cocktail specifico del quale eredita il nome, ad esempio c’è la QMini in “Pink Lady” o in “Black Russian”... I materiali leggeri come l’estate sono un mix di paglia e/o rafia colorata in sfumature meravigliose abbinati a pelli bovine molto pregiate dai colori scintillanti. Ovviamente le fodere logate sono in

VALEXTRA presents MarVles A MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECT CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE DESIGNER AND ARCHITECT OF WORLDWIDE FAME, PATRICIA URQUIOLA, AND THE LEADER IN THE MARBLE INDUSTRY, BUDRI: A UNIQUE MIX OF CRAFTSMANSHIP AND TECHNOLOGY. MarVles is an innovative and visionary project, which blends creativity, culture, craft workmanship and new technologies, while arising from the dialogue between three women with strong personalities and their sights set on the future: Sara Ferrero from Valextra, Alessandra Budri and Patricia Urquiola. The project includes three collections, each one characterised by an intarsia motif on the leather and new accessories like handles and fastenings. We have the Fuse collection made up by organic curves that suggest the rocky formations of marble and stone; while Bow is based on a play of geometries through inverted arches; and Edge has an extreme angular motif that recalls futurist movements and art deco. The colour palette is classic, with natural tones typical of marble matched with pop colours from the Valextra archives. The accessories recall architectural elements inspired by traditional entrances to Milan palaces, though recreated on a smaller scale. The materials contrast and come together through the vision of Patricia Urquiola: softness and hardness, warmth and cold, and stone usually used in architecture that is transformed into jewels, thanks to the skilled manufacturing of Budri.

MarVles è un progetto innovativo e visionario, che mescola creatività, cultura, artigianalità e nuove tecnologie e che nasce dal dialogo fra tre donne dalla forte personalità e dallo sguardo proiettato nel futuro come Sara Ferrero di Valextra, Alessandra Budri e Patricia Urquiola. Il progetto include tre collezioni, ognuna caratterizzata da un motivo a intarsio sulla pelle e nuovi accessori come manici e chiusure. Abbiamo la collezione Fuse, fatta di curve organiche che suggeriscono le formazioni rocciose del marmo e della pietra; la Bow, basata su un gioco di geometrie attraverso archi secanti; la Edge, con un motivo angolare estremo che ricorda i movimenti futuristi e art deco. La palette colori è classica, con tonalità naturali tipiche del marmo abbinate a colori pop dagli archivi Valextra. Gli accessori ricordano elementi architettonici ispirati ai tradizionali ingressi dei palazzi milanesi, ricreati in scala ridotta. I materiali si scontrano e si collegano attraverso la visione di Patricia Urquiola: morbidezza e durezza, calore e freddezza, pietre solitamente usate in architettura che diventano gioielli grazie alla sapienza manifatturiera di Budri.

Re-flag, emblem of a new fashion BORN FROM THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN REGENESI AND JOURNALIST MICHELA GATTERMAYER, THE NEW UNISEX COLLECTION, WHICH IS HETEROGENEOUS AND COMPLETE, USES AN INNOVATIVE GREEN FABRIC CREATED FROM THE REGENERATION OF PLASTIC BOTTLES. The new Re-Flag collection by Regenesi embodies the roots and mission of the brand founded by Maria Silvia Pazzi, which was granted the ‘2019 Circular Economy Best Performer’ award in the category of SMEs, thanks to its bags with an innovative design, obtained from the regeneration of post-consumer materials. Protagonist of Re-Flag is an innovative fabric created from the recycling of plastic bottles, together with shoulder straps and handles made from polyester ribbons recovered from warehouse scraps otherwise destined for disposal. The result is a complete daily wear collection for men and women who love to wear sophisticated accessories of high Italian manufacturing quality, which are also completely sustainable at the same time. CAROLA and the twists of the heart MADE WELL AND MADE WITH LOVE IS THE MANTRA OF THE ARTISANS WORKING ON THE PROJECT OF YOUNG COLUMBIAN DESIGNER CAROLINA ROCHA, WHERE HARMONY, COLOUR, AND NATURE ARE WOVEN TOGETHER INTO TRICOT PATTERNS IN HANDMADE AND ECO-FRIENDLY BAGS From the handbag to the tote, every bag is a unique piece that reveals the warm beating heart of this Latin American country and its women artisans, who fill the collection with its soul and traditions.

Every piece designed by Carola requires about one month of production time, which is needed to pass from the raw materials – like the cocoons of silkworms and the fibers of cumare palms – to the tricot weaves that characterise the different collections. The supply chain is local and fully respects the ecosystem. All the processes – from the planting of mulberry, to the cultivation of silkworms, to the creation of threads – is undertaken by around 200 families who, thanks to this activity, are able to care for their children.

The colours are all natural and obtained from coffee beans, nut shells, countless kinds of leaves, bark, flowers, and tropical fruits. The winter capsule “Rein Collection” is inspired by freedom and the equestrian life of the Amazon territory, while the summer collection features the vibrant colours of exotic fruits.

Ogni pezzo firmato Carola richiede un tempo di produzione di circa un mese, necessario per passare dai materiali grezzi - come i bozzoli dei bachi da seta e le fibre di palma cumare - agli intrecci tricot che caratterizzano le diverse collezioni. La filiera è locale e nel pieno rispetto dell’ecosistema. Tutto il processo - dalla semina del gelso, alla coltivazione dei bachi da seta, alla elaborazione dei fili - è realizzato da circa 200 famiglie che, grazie a quest’attività, provvedono al sostentamento dei propri figli.

I colori sono tutti naturali, ottenuti dai semi di caffè, dalla corteccia di noce, da innumerevoli tipi di foglie, cortecce, fiori e frutti tropicali. La capsule invernale “Rein Collection” si ispira alla libertà e alla vita equestre dei territori amazzonici, mentre quella estiva ai colori vibranti dei frutti esotici.

A Molise native by birth, but a citizen of the world by choice, Gaetano Pollice decided to start from the traditions of his own roots, from the culture and tastes of this region nestled between the Sannita Apennines and the beaches of the Adriatic sea, in order to give life to his own collection of handmade bags. “I like the idea of having my bags created by artisanal hands that speak my same language. And I would like to have them get on a plane and visit all the cities that I have visited over the years”. Every bag of his is much more than a simple object. It is passion, love, and joy, all together. The new collection called Lightness takes its inspiration from the Japanese culture of fans, UCHIWA and SENSU. Lightness is the key word. A return to geometric and simplistic lines, but with great attention to details like leather pleatings and the twisting of handles. The materials used are calfskin, nappa leather, and leathers printed with exotic prints like snakeskin, but also iridescent prints, coated with glossy and bright effects. The insides are all lined in leather or in cotton in the mini Buckets.

High quality leathers are vegetable-tanned in Tuscany in accordance with tradition, while metallic components are all nickel-free, and linings and sewing thread are in organic cotton. A timeless collection, which embodies and exemplifies the spirit of this young Italian brand with distinctive traits and an authentic character.

Created in 2011 from the encounter between fashion stylist Simona Sabbatini and art designer Stefano Turco, partners both in life and in work, Stefanoturco was transformed in just a few short years from a small artisanal reality into a cosmopolitan brand loved around the world. The Bridge, among the vineyards The Bridge, tra i vigneti THE HISTORIC MADE IN ITALY BRAND OF LEATHER GOODS, FOUNDED IN TUSCANY IN THE SEVENTIES, PRESENTS A FASHION SHOW DURING MILAN FASHION WEEK WITH ITS MODELS BAREFOOT AMONG THE VINEYARDS, RENEWING ITS BOHEMIAN STYLE IN CONTACT WITH NATURE The proposals of The Bridge for SS21 find a striking setting in the fashion video “Vineyard stroll”, which was launched as part of a live broadcast on the brand’s Instagram page during Milan Fashion Week: Lombardy’s vineyards serve as the backdrop to the models who walk barefoot among the rows of grapevines, with their grapes ripe and ready to be harvested, while showcasing the brand’s latest bag proposals. A green setting inspired by the ever-present values of the brand and its Bohemian, globetrotter, lifestyle in close contact with nature. Opening the show were the mini-bags of the Fiorenza line, a name that would like to pay tribute to the founder of this historic Tuscan company of leather goods, who in the flower of her youth, in 1969, created this brand together with four other enterprising partners, which some might even define as a start-up ‘ante litteram’. The style of the mini-bag is characterised by a buckle covered in leather, which, in the perfection of the stitches and in the proportions of the shape, exalts the artisanal manufacturing quality. Cognac in colour and proposed in a limited edition, it is the real “jewel” of the collection: the exquisite The Bridge leather is shaded thanks to a special process with a warm wax finish that conveys an original and unique look.

The other protagonist of the show is the bucket bag: a timeless item inspired by the Seventies archive of The Bridge, it returns with larger volumes, soft shapes, and the classic tassel drawstring closure, with the introduction of new elements like a handle and double handle that allow it to also be carried on the arm. The palette of colours ranges from red to orange, sky blue, and the ever-present brown and cognac tones. In this area, there is also a new proposal: two new bucket bags in brand new The Bridge monogram fabric. Wrapping up the fashion show, were some iconic pieces of the brand with tattoo-styled subjects – a pierced heart and a butterfly – created by the artist Elly Von Poison, which will be proposed in stores alongside other original designs.

Le proposte della SS21 di The Bridge trovano una suggestiva ambientazione nel fashion video “Vineyard stroll” trasmesso in diretta streaming sull'account Instagram del marchio durante la Fashion Week di Milano: i vigneti della Lombardia, fa da sfondo alle modelle che sfilano a piedi nudi tra i filari, i grappoli maturi pronti per la vendemmia, sfoggiando le borse del marchio.

Una cornice verde ispirata ai valori di sempre del marchio, al suo stile di vita bohemien, globe-trotter e a contatto con la natura. Ad aprire lo show, le minibag della linea Fiorenza, nome che vuol essere un omaggio alla fondatrice della storica azienda toscana di pelletteria che nel 1969, giovanissima, creò assieme ad altri quattro intraprendenti soci quella che possiamo definire una start up ante litteram. Lo stile della minibag si definisce attraverso la fibbia rivestita in pelle che, nella perfezione del punto e nella proporzione delle forme, esalta la qualità della manifattura artigianale. In colore cognac e in edizione limitata è la vera “chicca” della collezione: il prezioso cuoio The Bridge è sfumato grazie ad una lavorazione speciale, una lucidatura con cera riscaldata che conferisce un effetto originale e unico. Altro protagonista dello show è il secchiello: evergreen ispirato ai pezzi d'archivio anni Settanta di The Bridge, torna con volumi ampi, forme morbide e le classiche nappine per la chiusura a coulisse, con l'introduzione di elementi nuovi come il manico e i doppi manici che permettono di portarlo anche al braccio. La palette di colori si declina dal rosso, arancio e azzurro ai continuativi marrone e cognac. In questa sezione, spicca una novità: i due nuovi secchielli nel nuovo tessuto monogram The Bridge. A chiudere la passerella, alcuni dei pezzi iconici del marchio con soggetti stile tattoo – il cuore trafitto e la farfalla – creati dall'artista Elly Von Poison che saranno disponibili negli store assieme ad altri disegni originali.

118th Mipel: a concrete example of resilience THE EDITION THAT WAS HELD FROM 20 TO 23 SEPTEMBER IN HALL 1 OF FIERAMILANO-RHO WANTED TO GIVE A STRONG AND CONCRETE SIGNAL TO THE SECTOR AND INTERNATIONAL MARKET WITH ITS NINETY BRANDS AND THE MIPEL DIGITAL TRADE SHOW PROJECT MEANT TO SUPPORT THE PHYSICAL FAIR.

At what is almost its sixtieth anniversary, the September edition of the international fair of leather goods and accessories wanted to present itself to the world and sector as a concrete example of resilience. Naturally, the Covid-19 emergency reduced the number of operators present, but at the same time brought out even more the importance of “to be there”, as underlined by Franco Gabbrielli, President of MIPEL and Assopellettieri: “For us, it was a real act of responsibility towards the System and all of Made in Italy, towards those exhibitors who have always believed in MIPEL and who have done so above all TODAY by siding with us at the forefront”. A concept also reinforced by General Manager Danny D'Alessandro: “We can say in a loud voice that we, as MIPEL, together with all the entrepreneurs present, have protected the Leather Goods System. Especially to the latter goes a huge applause, they are the brave captains we will not forget at the next edition of MIPEL scheduled from 21 to 23 March 2021".

For this edition, Mipel 118 ‘moved’ to Hall 1 in FieraMilano-Rho and hosted three special areas: the Trend Area, which has been transformed from the past, the Mipel Square, which hosted talks and sem-

inars, and the MISS MIPEL project aimed at promoting the value of Italian leather goods in the world by offering producers the opportunity to show the very best of themselves and propose themselves also internationally, both through e-commerce and through numerous on-going pop-up stores. Completing the offering of services in support of participating brands is the “MIPEL Digital Trade Show”, realised in collaboration with NuORDER: a virtual event that started on the 15th of September and ended on the 15th of November, which gave visitors unable to be physically present at Mipel, for reasons related to the pandemic, the opportunity to place their orders, virtually meet the participating brands, view the new SS2021 collections and discover the latest news in the sector. Another important project was “ITALIAN STARTUP”, with which Mipel and the ITA Agency strengthened their support to emerging realities and Italian creativity.

Mipel was held at the same time, totally or partially, with the other main fashion fairs (Lineapelle, Micam, TheOne, and Homi) under the motto #strongertogether: a strong message of union of the Italian fashion and lifestyle supply chain, expressing the desire to restart that characterises the events.

ASSOPELLETTIERI ANNUAL ASSEMBLY AND MEETING WITH ALAN FRIEDMAN

The time for provincialism is over During the Annual Assembly of its members, this past 5 November, Assopellettieri organised an interesting virtual meeting open to the public, in which also renowned journalist and writer Alan Friedman participated along with one hundred or so businesses. The theme? “Covid19, the American elections and international trade policy, what is the future?” The meeting, moderated by journalist Matteo Minà, was enriched not only by the contribution of Friedman, but also by the speeches of three entrepreneurs representing the most important Italian leather goods districts (Tuscany, Marches, and Campania). One of the issues that clearly emerged was how now more than ever before the time for provincialism is over, and that in order to overcome the grip of this crisis, it is necessary for leather goods companies to join forces and come together as a team. International competition is becoming fierce and the Covid emergency requires fast action and reactions, along with the adoption of new communication and digital strategies that quite often are not a part of our small and medium-sized companies.

In his speech, Friedman underlined how the election of Biden as the President of the United States will probably be completely advantageous for Made in Italy, because his political campaign was not protectionist, and unlike Trump, he never announced the desire to implement tariffs on European products. The States could accordingly return as a more reliable and open partner, and Italian businesses must be ready for this. Making a quality product at an interesting price is no longer enough. Italian companies must also learn to communicate excellence and sustainability, while investing in digital content, which is not limited only to e-commerce, but also includes the creation of valuable content to be used on various platforms.

It is exactly for this reason it’s important to come together and move forward with common strategies, because in most cases, it’s a matter of enormous investments that small businesses would be incapable of making on their own.

Another central theme for the future of the sector is that of sustainability. In this case, once again, the main criticism is the unfortunate inability of Italian businesses to recount themselves properly, notwithstanding indisputable Italian leadership in this field – understood as attention to materials, and respect for the environment and workers, while maintaining traditions.

At the end of the public meeting, the assembly continued in a private session dedicated to its members, during which two new administrative bodies were elected: the General Board and the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. “We are very satisfied that the newly-elected bodies are made up by entrepreneurs who ensure the right representation of all the main Italian leather goods production districts”, commented the President of Assopellettieri, Franco Gabbrielli.

Giunta ormai a quasi sessant’anni di vita, con l’edizione di settembre la fiera internazionale della pelletteria e accessori in pelle ha voluto porsi di fronte al mondo e al settore come una dimostrazione concreta di resilienza. Naturalmente l’emergenza Covid-19 ha ridimensionato il numero di operatori presenti all’evento, ma allo stesso tempo ha fatto emergere ancor di più l'importanza dell’ “esserci”, come ha sottolineato Franco Gabbrielli, Presidente di MIPEL e Assopellettieri :”Per noi è stato un vero e proprio atto di responsabilità verso il Sistema e il Made in Italy, verso quegli espositori che hanno sempre creduto in MIPEL e che lo hanno fatto soprattutto OGGI schierandosi con noi in prima linea”. Un concetto rafforzato anche dal Direttore Generale Danny D’Alessandro: “Possiamo dire a gran voce che noi come MIPEL insieme a tutti gli imprenditori presenti, abbiamo tutelato il Sistema Pelletteria. Soprattutto a questi ultimi va un plauso enorme, sono i capitani coraggiosi di cui non ci dimenticheremo in occasione della prossima edizione di MIPEL in programma dal 21 al 23 marzo 2021”.

Mipel 118 ha ‘traslocato’ per l’occasione all’interno del padiglione 1 di FieraMilano-Rho e ha ospitato tre aree speciali: l’Area Trend, trasformata rispetto al passato, la Mipel Square, che ha ospitato talk e seminari, e il progetto MISS MIPEL, volto a promuovere il valore della pelletteria italiana nel mondo offrendo ai produttori l’occasione di mettersi in mostra e poi di proporsi all’estero, sia tramite l’e-commerce, sia con i numerosi pop-up store in corso di elaborazione.

A completare l’offerta dei servizi a supporto dei brand partecipanti va poi ricordato il “MIPEL Digital Trade Show”, realizzato in collaborazione con NuORDER: un evento virtuale partito il 15 settembre e conclusosi il 15 novembre, che ha dato la possibilità ai visitatori non presenti fisicamente a Mipel a causa della pandemia di effettuare comunque i loro ordini, incontrare virtualmente i brand partecipanti, visionare le nuove collezioni SS2021 e scoprire le novità del settore. Altro importante progetto è

stato “ITALIAN STARTUP”, con cui Mipel e Agenzia ICE hanno ribadito il loro supporto a sostegno delle realtà emergenti e della creatività italiana.

Mipel si è svolto in contemporanea, totale o parziale, con le altre principali fiere della moda (Lineapelle, Micam, TheOne Milano, Homi) al motto #strongertogether: un forte messaggio di unione della filiera fashion e lifestyle italiana della voglia di ripartenza che caratterizza le manifestazioni.

ASSEMBLEA ANNUALE ASSOPELLETTIERI E INCONTRO CON ALAN FRIEDMAN

Non è più il tempo dei campanilismi In occasione della consueta assemblea annuale dei soci, Assopellettieri ha organizzato lo scorso 5 novembre un interessante incontro virtuale aperto al pubblico cui ha partecipato anche il noto giornalista e scrittore Alan Friedman e un centinaio di imprese. Il tema? “Covid19, elezioni americane e commercio internazionale, quale futuro?”. L’incontro, moderato dal giornalista Matteo Minà, è stato arricchito, oltre che dal contributo di Friedman, anche dagli interventi di tre imprenditori a rappresentanza dei più importanti distretti pellettieri italiani (Toscana, Marche e Campania). Uno degli elementi che è emerso con maggior forza è che oggi più che mai non è più tempo di campanilismi, e che per superare la crisi che ci attanaglia è necessario che le aziende di pelletteria si uniscano e facciano squadra. La competizione internazionale si sta facendo feroce, l’emergenza Covid richiede velocità di azioni e di reazioni, l’adozione di nuove strategie comunicative e digitali che molto spesso non appartengono alle nostre piccole e medie imprese.

Friedman nel suo intervento ha, inoltre, sottolineato come l’elezione di Biden a Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America andrà probabilmente a tutto vantaggio del Made in Italy, perché la sua campagna elettorale non è certo stata protezionistica e rispetto a Trump non ha mai annunciato di voler ricorrere a dazi per i prodotti europei.

Gli States potrebbero quindi tornare ad essere un partner più affidabile e aperto, e le imprese italiane devono farsi trovare pronte. Fare un prodotto di qualità e ad un prezzo interessante non basta più, è necessario che le aziende italiane imparino anche a comunicare l’eccellenza e la sostenibilità e ad investire nel digitale, che non vuol dire solo e-commerce, ma creazione di contenuti di valore da utilizzare sulle varie piattaforme. Proprio per questo è importante aggregarsi o comunque portare avanti strategie comuni, perché nella maggior parte dei casi si tratta di investimenti ingenti che le piccole imprese non sarebbero in grado di sostenere.

Altro tema centrale per il futuro del settore è stato individuato nella sostenibilità.

Anche in questo caso l’appunto principale mosso alle imprese è che, nonostante sia indiscutibile il primato italiano anche in questo ambito - inteso come attenzione ai materiali, rispetto per l’ambiente e i lavoratori, mantenimento delle tradizioni manca purtroppo la capacità di saperlo raccontare.

Al termine dell’incontro pubblico, l’assemblea è continuata in una sessione privata dedicata agli associati durante la quale sono stati eletti i due nuovi organi amministrativi: il Consiglio Generale e il Collegio dei Probiviri. “Siamo molto soddisfatti in quanto gli organi neo-eletti sono formati da imprenditori che assicurano la giusta rappresentanza di tutti i principali distretti produttivi italiani di pelletteria” ha commentato il Presidente di Assopellettieri, Franco Gabbrielli.

A negative semester for Italian leather ITALIAN TRADE EXCHANGE BY REGION AND PROVINCE IN THE ATECO CB151 CATEGORY (LEATHER GOODS AND TANNED LEATHERS) RECORDS A DOUBLE-DIGIT DOWNTREND DURING THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 2020, CONNECTED TO THE INEVITABLE LOCKDOWN OF MARCH AND APRIL AND THE SLOWDOWN IN GLOBAL DEMAND CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC.

The economic data concerning the first six months of the year is unavoidably negative, with a drop in exports equal to -30.6% in value (only 4.55 billion euros registered compared to the 6.55 billion of January-June 2019) for leather goods and tanned leathers (grouped together under the Ateco CB151 category). There is a nearly identical negative trend, in terms of negative percentages, for both leather goods (which accounts for over 70% of the overall total) and tanned leathers. The inactivity during the months of March and April – resulting from the restrictive measures adopted in Italy – and the generalised slowdown in global demand following the pandemic, strongly influenced sales in both sectors. A double-digit drop was recorded by all of the main export regions.

Among the top 5, in order of importance,

are Tuscany, Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Marches, which together accounted for 93.7% of total exports during this six-month period. Out of these regions, only Veneto managed to “limit” the downtrend and maintain it under -20% (at -18.9%). Alleviating the drop-off, was the considerable increase in exports destined for Switzerland, on the rise by +56.5% compared to the first 6 months of 2019 (from 208.7 to 327 million euros). Without the numbers of the Swiss confederation, the drop in exports would have been even worse (-31.3%) even for Veneto. With regards to the other main regions, Tuscany experienced a loss of -38% compared to the first six months of 2019, with a -40.6% downtrend for Florence (which despite this loss, remains at the top of the provincial classification,

accounting for an estimated 30% of the national total), and -32% for Pisa, while Pistoia, instead, is on the road to recovery (+18.6%) after its negative results in 2019. Among the main export destinations for Tuscany, standing out is the significant drop-off in exports to Switzerland (almost cut in half to -51.3%); with negative results in the USA (-37.8%) and also in Germany (-28.2%); while slightly better results were registered in France (only -11.3%). To the contrary exports to the United Kingdom grew by +5.4%.

A clearly marked downward trend, similar to the one in Tuscany, characterises the exports of the Marches district (-38.6%): with an especially negative trend in Fermo (-35.4%), Ascoli Piceno (-36.2%) and above all Macerata (-47%). Lombardy and Emilia Romagna have instead expe-

rienced a -27% drop in exports. For the former (-27.7%, with Milan at -30.3% and Brescia at -29%), the loss was set off by the positive performance achieved in the South Korean market, which rose by +5.3%. The latter instead experienced generalised drop-offs in its first 5 markets by all of its provinces (with Piacenza and Bologna, which are fifth and sixth in the classification nationally, dropping by -12% and -37.4% respectively). Among the territories outside of the “top 5 regions”, in Campania (-23,9% altogether), there was a moderate drop for Naples (-4.6%), while in Abruzzo Teramo a significant decrease of -38.5% was registered. Instead, with regards to imports, the CB151 category during the first 6 months of the year recorded a significant downtrend in value equal to -25.7%.

I dati congiunturali del primo semestre dell’anno sono inevitabilmente di segno negativo, con un calo dell’export del -30,6% in valore (4,55 miliardi di euro contro i 6,55 miliardi di gennaio-giugno 2019) per i prodotti della pelletteria e della concia (raggruppati nella voce Ateco CB151).

Pressoché di pari gravità, in termini percentuali, le flessioni subìte sia dalla pelletteria (che pesa per oltre il 70% sull’aggregato complessivo) che dalle pelli conciate.

L’inattività dei mesi di marzo e aprile – indotta dai provvedimenti restrittivi adottati in Italia – e il rallentamento generalizzato della domanda mondiale in seguito alla pandemia hanno pesantemente condizionato le vendite dei due settori. Riduzioni a due cifre si

segnalato per tutte le maggiori regioni esportatrici. Tra le prime 5 (nell’ordine: Toscana, Veneto, Lombardia, Emilia Romagna e Marche), che coprono assieme ben il 93,7% del totale export del semestre, solo il Veneto “contiene” la diminuzione sotto il 20% (-18,9%).

Ad attenuare la caduta, l’aumento considerevole dei flussi diretti in Svizzera, in crescita del +56,5% rispetto ai primi 6 mesi del 2019 (da 208,7 a 327 milioni di euro).

Non considerando la confederazione elvetica, la contrazione delle esportazioni risulterebbe decisamente più pesante (-31,3%) anche per il Veneto.

Venendo alle altre principali regioni, la Toscana ha evidenziato una flessione del -38% sul primo semestre 2019, con un -40,6% per Firenze (che resta,

malgrado ciò, leader della classifica per province, con una quota di circa il 30% del totale nazionale) e un -32% per Pisa; in recupero invece Pistoia (+18,6%), dopo le dinamiche negative del 2019. Tra le principali destinazioni dell’export toscano, spicca il ridimensionamento dei flussi verso la Svizzera (praticamente dimezzati, -51,3%); male anche USA (-37,8%) e Germania (-28,2%); un po’ meno rilevante il calo in Francia (-11,3%). In controtendenza, invece, le vendite verso il Regno Unito, cresciute del +5,4%.

Decisamente marcato, e analogo a quello toscano, l’arretramento dell’export evidenziato dai distretti marchigiani (-38,6%): dinamiche molto penalizzanti a Fermo (-35,4%), Ascoli Piceno (-36,2%) e soprattutto Macerata (-47%).

Lombardia ed Emilia Romagna mostrano un calo nell’ordine del -27%. Per la prima (-27,7%, con Milano -30,3% e Brescia -29%), la diminuzione è stata attenuata dalle performance confortanti ottenute sul mercato sudcoreano, cresciuto del +5,3%; per la seconda, cali generalizzati hanno interessato i primi 5 mercati e tutte le province (con Piacenza e Bologna, quinta e sesta della classifica a livello nazionale, scese rispettivamente del -12% e -37,4%).

Tra i territori fuori dalle “regioni top5”, in Campania (-23,9% nel complesso) decremento contenuto per Napoli (-4,6%); mentre in Abruzzo Teramo perde il -38,5%. Con riferimento all’import, la voce CB151 segna nei primi 6 mesi una frenata pari al -25,7% in valore.

ILM: looking forward to 2021...with a surprise ILM: in attesa del 2021… con una sorpresa ILM OFFENBACH IS NOT ONLY ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT TRADE FAIRS OF ITS KIND, BUT ALSO AS A KNOWLEDGE PLATFORM FOR THE LATEST TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS IN THE FIELD OF FASHION ACCESSORIES AND TRAVEL GOODS We talked with Arnd Hinrich Kappe, Chief Manager of the exhibition about their plans to bounce back from the September 2020 cancellation and about the future edition from July 6th to 8th 2021.

In your opinion, how has cancellation of the 2020 September edition impacted your exhibitors and ILM in general?

The lockdown order taken out by the German authorities of course was a practical nightmare for us: coming down just a week before the fair dates, it created confusion and uncertainty. Of course we tried to help our exhibitors and their buyers the best we could and naturally we started planning right away a safe new edition for the following year. We already had lots of bookings right after the cancellation of the September one: our exhibitors have full faith in us and in the recovery of the market.

How is the July 2021 edition's planning going?

At the moment we are preparing all the safety plans and measures you can foresee for the fairgrounds, from bigger open booths to larger trend areas with new concept paths for our Halls, and so on.

Moreover, along with our usual successful formula and our visitor's favourite 'Green Area' with the sustainability proposals, there is a big piece of news for next year: in synergy with the new Fashion Week that will be taking place in Frankfurt Am Mein, noted brands in the shoe industry will present their collections together with ILM exhibitors in a novel trade fair design concept named "Xtra Order Days". An exclusive shuttle service will connect our exhibition in Offenbach with the fashion event in Frankfurt which is just an half hour away. An attractive program will include digital high-

lights and exciting lectures to complete the event. During talks and discussions, specialists will provide insights into their subject across all industries and offer practical inspirations for a total look overview.

ILM 2021: which are your hopes and expectations?

The new fashion category shoes and the event in Frankfurt offer new customer potential for sure. However I expect it will be a "slower" edition, if you know what I mean.

We are totally an international fair, but given the travel restrictions that could be in place at the moment that the fair will open, it will probably a more European exhibition compared to the last ones.

How do you expect the leather goods sector to evolve in 2021?

Do you see any signs of recover?

I have to say I am hopeful. I talked to a lot producers and company owners and they told me it is slowly getting better. We have to adapt to this new normal. There will probably be a sort of "cleaning" of the market: some already struggling brands will cease to exist while some others will expand. The key will be quality and digitalisation. In regards to ILM, as already did in March 2020, we will have streaming for events and catwalks and we already have an innovative platform in place that will allow smooth and successful contacts between exhibitors and buyers, not only to acquire simple contact infos but also to see the collections in real time as if you are at the fair, chat to the exhibitors and get information/advice about the collections.

The 'face to face' will not disappear, it will have to be adjusted for the time being.

Nothing beats the social interactions when visiting an exhibition and the touch & feel you can experience with the products.

Abbiamo parlato con Arnd Hinrich Kappe, Chief Manager del salone, dei piani per riprendersi dalla cancellazione di settembre 2020 e della futura edizione dal 6 all'8 luglio 2021.

Secondo lei, in che modo l'annullamento dell'edizione di settembre 2020 ha influito sui vostri espositori e su ILM in generale?

L'ordine di lockdown imposto dalle autorità tedesche ovviamente è stato un vero e proprio incubo per noi: arrivato solo una settimana prima delle date della fiera, ha creato confusione e incertezza. Ovviamente abbiamo cercato di aiutare i nostri espositori e i loro buyer il meglio che abbiamo potuto e poi naturalmente abbiamo iniziato subito a programmare una nuova edizione in sicurezza per l'anno successivo. Abbiamo già avuto tantissime prenotazioni subito dopo la cancellazione di quella di settembre: i nostri espositori hanno piena fiducia in noi e nella ripresa del mercato.

Come sta andando la programmazione dell'edizione di luglio 2021?

Al momento stiamo preparando tutti i piani e le misure di sicurezza che si possono prevedere per il quartiere fieristico, da stand aperti più grandi ad aree di tendenza più ampie con percorsi di nuova concezione per i nostri padiglioni, e così via.

Inoltre, insieme alla nostra consueta formula di successo e alla 'Green Area' preferita dai nostri visitatori con le proposte della sostenibilità, c'è una grande novità per il prossimo anno: in sinergia con la nuova Fashion Week che sarà in concomitanza a Francoforte Am Mein, noti brand dell'industria calzaturiera presenteranno

le proprie collezioni insieme agli espositori ILM in un nuovo concetto di design fieristico chiamato "Xtra Order Days".

Un esclusivo servizio navetta collegherà la fiera di Offenbach con l'evento moda di Francoforte che dista solo mezz'ora. Un interessante programma includerà importanti momenti digitali e interessanti conferenze per completare l'evento. ILM 2021: quali sono le vostre speranze e aspettative?

La novità della categoria calzature moda e l'evento di Francoforte concomitante offrono sicuramente la possibilità di raggiungere nuovi potenziali clienti. In ogni caso, mi aspetto che sarà un'edizione "più lenta", per così dire. Siamo una fiera totalmente internazionale, ma viste le restrizioni di viaggio che potrebbero essere in vigore al momento dell'apertura, probabilmente sarà un salone più europeo rispetto agli ultimi.

Come prevedete si evolverà il settore della pelletteria nel 2021? Vede segni di ripresa?

Personalmente sono ottimista. Ho parlato a lungo con produttori e proprietari di aziende e mi hanno detto che si sta lentamente migliorando. Dobbiamo adattarci a questo "new normal". Probabilmente ci sarà una sorta di "pulizia" del mercato: alcuni marchi già in difficoltà cesseranno di esistere mentre altri si espanderanno.

La chiave sarà la qualità e la digitalizzazione. Per quanto riguarda ILM, come abbiamo già fatto a marzo 2020, avremo lo streaming per eventi e sfilate e disponiamo già di una piattaforma innovativa che consentirà contatti fluidi e di successo tra espositori e buyer, non solo per acquisire le semplici informazioni di contatto ma anche per vedere le collezioni in in tempo reale come se foste in fiera, chattare con gli espositori e ottenete informazioni nonchè consigli sulle collezioni. Il "faccia a faccia" non scomparirà, dovrà essere 'aggiustato' per il momento. Niente può battere le interazioni sociali che avvengono quando si visita una fiera e l'esperienza sensoriale che puoi provare toccando con mano i prodotti.

Roberto Tadini is the new president of AIP Roberto Tadini è il nuovo presidente di AIP NEW FACES AND IMPORTANT CONFIRMATIONS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THEONEMILANO AND AIP (ITALIAN FUR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION), ITS OWNER As the last act of a term of office that began in 2011, the outgoing President of AIP was given the task of appointing the board of directors that will govern the fate of TheOneMilano, the Milanese haut-à-porter fair. Thus, Roberto Scarpella named the seven members of the board: four existing members (Chairman Norberto Albertalli, Managing Director Elena Salvaneschi, directors Gesare Gavazzi, Vice-Chairman, and Roberto Tadini) and two new faces (Umberto Roncarati and Giorgio Guida), replacing Paolo Manetti and Antonio Olivieri who did not make themselves available for personal reasons. Scarpella will also be part of the Board of Directors.

Furthermore, the General Meeting of the Italian Fur Industry Association elected Roberto Tadini as the new president of the category. Tadini takes over from Roberto Scarpella, who will now hold the position of honorary president.

Born in Caravaggio, Bergamo in 1969, Roberto Tadini joined M.I.B. Manifattura Italiana del Brembo in 1999, after having worked for ten years in the financial industry. Tadini is an entrepreneur but

also a person who has been closely associated with the category for many years. He has been Vice President of AIP since 2014, and President of IFDDA (International Fur Dressers’ and Dyers’ Association) since 2016. “I am honoured and proud of the unanimous vote of the AIP’s general meeting, which elected me as president of the category,” said Roberto Tadini. “This is a very challenging task because it is not easy to take over from a great president like Roberto Scarpella, who has guided AIP for nine years with a programme aimed at not isolating the fur industry, and giving it more institutional credibility in a constant dialogue with the fashion world. I’d like to express my thanks and those of everyone to him. I will take over the baton and commit myself to work as the association has always done, with transparency and the desire to give voice to the requests of members, driven by innovation. The responsibilities carried out during my six years as AIP Vice-President have allowed me to become familiar with the association’s goals and to collaborate in continuing along the path paved by the outgoing president.”

Nato a Caravaggio in provincia di Bergamo nel 1969, Roberto Tadini entra nella conceria M.I.B. Manifattura Italiana del Brembo nel 1999, dopo aver lavorato per

dieci anni nel mondo finanziario. Tadini è imprenditore ma anche persona da anni vicina alla categoria: dal 2014 è stato vice presidente di Aip e dal 2016 Presidente di IFDDA (International Fur Dressers’ and Dyers’ Association). "Sono onorato e orgoglioso per il voto unanime dell’assemblea di Aip, che mi ha eletto presidente della categoria - ha sottolineato Roberto Tadini - Si tratta di un compito impegnativo perché non è semplice succedere a un grande presidente come Roberto Scarpella, che ha guidato Aip per nove anni con un programma volto a non isolare la pellicceria, accreditandola sempre di più a livello istituzionale in un dialogo costante con il mondo della moda. A lui va il mio grazie insieme a quello di tutti noi. Prenderò il testimone e mi impegno a lavorare come fatto sempre dall’associazione, con trasparenza, volontà di dar voce alle istanze degli associati, spinta all’innovazione. ARTYCAPUCINES After last year’s first collection, the iconic Capucines bag has once again been reinterpreted by six leading contemporary artists. Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes created a bag that echoes her vibrant and hypnotic paintings inspired by the folk art of her native country. Liu Wei focuses on his interest in geometric architectural forms, while Henry Taylor transposes ‘A Young Master’, a surprising portrait of his dear late friend Noah Davis, an American painter and installation artist, using both cutting-edge laser printing and traditional inlay techniques. Jean-Michel Othoniel thought of a couture interpretation of the summer basket.

Josh Smith, instead, recreates two of his famous expressionistic paintings. Artycapucines

by Chinese artist Zhao Zhao is a sophisticated puzzle of over three hundred laser-cut parts stitched together in an elegant reflective composition.

Arsutoria School at Milan Fashion Week IN DIGITAL FORM, OF COURSE, BUT ALSO THIS YEAR THE BEST STUDENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR FOOTWEAR AND LEATHER GOODS DESIGNERS/PATTERN MAKERS ENJOYED THE MORE THAN UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW THEIR WORKS IN A PRESTIGIOUS SETTING. During the last Milan Fashion Week, Arsutoria School students once again had the memorable opportunity to show their work during one of the most important international events for the fashion sector.

The Milanese institute for footwear and leather goods designers/pattern makers, together with 11 schools of the Fashion Training System Platform, was in fact protagonist of an innovative digital edition of Fashion Graduate Italia.

Donato Medici, President of the Fashion Training System Platform, emphasises the importance of the occasion: “For the Fashion Training System Platform, joining the Milan Fashion Week programme is a source of satisfaction and pride. The two worlds of training and fashion industry, are in constant dialogue and are able to communicate in a common space.”

The synergy of intentions between the National Chamber of Italian Fashion and the Fashion Training System Platform Association has put in place an initiative aimed at enhancing the system of Italian fashion schools at national and international level and favouring their encounter with the fashion industry.

On the Fashion Graduate Italia platform the digital performance, creativity and talent of the students belonging to the schools that have joined the initiative are still visible today. On show the images of the students’ collections through photographic lookbooks and, above all, Fashion Films made by each school, to tell about its philosophy and show the students’ collections.

Durante la scorsa Milano Fashion Week, gli studenti di Arsutoria School hanno avuto, ancora una volta, la memorabile occasione di mostrare i loro lavori durante una delle manifestazioni internazionali più importanti per il settore moda.

L’istituto milanese per stilisti/modellisti di calzature e pelletteria, insieme a 11 scuole di Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda (PSFM), è stata infatti protagonista di un’innovativa edizione digitale di Fashion Graduate Italia. È Donato Medici, Presidente di Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda, a sottolineare l’importanza dell’occasione: “Per Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda entrare a far parte del programma della Milano Fashion Week eÌ motivo di soddisfazione e orgoglio. Due mondi, quello della formazione e quello dell’industria fashion, in costante dialogo e che possono comunicare in uno spazio comune.”

La sinergia di intenti tra Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana e l’Associazione Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda, ha messo in campo un’iniziativa finalizzata a valorizzare il sistema delle scuole di Moda italiane a livello nazionale ed internazionale e a favorirne l’incontro con l’industria della moda.

Sulla piattaforma di Fashion Graduate Italia sono ancora oggi visibili le performance digitali, la creatività e il talento degli studenti appartenenti alle scuole che hanno aderito all’iniziativa.

In mostra le immagini delle collezioni degli studenti attraverso lookbook fotografici e, soprattutto, i Fashion Film realizzati da ogni scuola, per raccontare la propria filosofia creativa e le collezioni degli studenti.

Cape Karoo International accompanies us in the interesting history of the leather industry, in particular of the fine ostrich leather. A tribute to the sustainability and tradition of a material that has always accompanied humanity.

The Language of CKI Ostrich Leather tells the story of longevity and comfort of ostrich leather creations, that beautifully aged into their natural patina.

Genuine leather products will age beautifully with time. They can change colour and get a character of their own during normal use, but if you take care of your Leather product, it will last a lifetime. For example, a well-crafted handbag will look better over time and last beyond the expected lifetime it is normally designed for.

Creating leather products is as relevant today as it was 1000 years ago. Leather is one of man’s earliest and most useful discoveries. Our ancestors used leather to protect themselves from the elements. Primitive man hunted wild animals for food, then made clothing, footwear and crude tents from the hides. Like then, most hides used today are a by-product of the meat industry. Animals are commercially farmed for the meat and dairy; offering by-products like hides / skins, wool and feathers. It is amazing that you can take what used to be a waste product and make it a useful and beautiful material which morphed into a fashionable, sought-after essential.

In the leather industry, the financial value of hides and skins is not big enough for someone to keep animals for the leather only. The hides and skins are not the determining product.

Manufacturing a high-quality and sustainable product from them is in fact a service to society.

We need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and all things plastic made from them. Renewable raw materials that come from natural origins like leather are vital. Products must be made with aftercare, repair and refurbishment in mind as long product life is one of the biggest savings of virgin material and emissions.

CKI’s rich history stretches back to the 1860’s when the commercial farming of ostriches originated in the Klein Karoo.

Cape Karoo International ci accompagna nell’interessante storia dell’industria della pelle, in particolare della pregiata pelle di struzzo. Un omaggio alla sostenibilità e alla tradizione di un materiale che accompagna da sempre l’umanità.

Il linguaggio della pelle di struzzo CKI racconta la storia della longevità e della comodità delle creazioni in pelle di struzzo, che invecchiano magnificamente grazie alla patina naturale regalata dal tempo che scorre.

I prodotti in vera pelle invecchiano meravigliosamente. Possono cambiare colore e assumere un proprio carattere durante il normale utilizzo, ma se ti prendi cura di un prodotto in pelle, oltre a divenire sempre più bello, ti durerà anche tutta la vita. Ad esempio, una borsa ben realizzata avrà un aspetto migliore nel tempo e durerà ben oltre quanto previsto.

La creazione di prodotti in pelle è importante oggi come lo era 1000 anni fa. La pelle è una delle prime e più utili scoperte dell'uomo. I nostri antenati usavano la pelle per proteggersi dagli elementi. L'uomo primitivo cacciava animali selvatici per il cibo, per poi crearsi vestiti, calzature e rozze tende con le loro pelli. Come allora, anche oggi la quasi totalità delle pelli utilizzate risultano un sottoprodotto dell'industria della carne. Gli animali, allevati commercialmente per carne e latte, offrono, poi, sottoprodotti come pelli, lana e piume.

Ed è incredibile come si possa trasformare quello che sarebbe un prodotto di scarto in un materiale utile e bello, trasformarlo in un elemento essenziale e ricercato per la moda. Il valore finanziario dell'industria della pelle non giustificherebbe di per sé l’allevamento di bestiame. Le pelli, infatti, non rappresentano un prodotto determinante. In realtà il mondo delle concerie offre un servizio alla società trasformando uno scarto destinato alla discarica in un prodotto di alta qualità e sostenibile.

Le materie prime rinnovabili di origine naturale, come la pelle, sono vieppiù fondamentali nella ormai dichiarata battaglia per la riduzione della nostra dipendenza dai combustibili fossili e dai loro derivati di plastica.

Quando un prodotto è realizzato tenendo conto di caratteristiche come curabilità, riparabilità e rinnovabilità, significa che viene creato un prodotto di lunga durata, cioè un prodotto in grado di assicurare uno dei maggiori risparmi di materiale vergine ed emissioni.

La corposa storia di CKI - Cape Karoo International risale al 1860, quando l'allevamento commerciale di struzzi ebbe origine nel Klein Karoo. Oggi, CKI è il principale produttore mondiale di pelle di struz-

gered or rare animal species. These types of exotic leather are regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). CITES plays an important role in conserving rare species and ensuring that they are protected from extinction.

Cape Karoo breeds a specific species of ostrich (Struthio Camelus Domesticus or SA Black) that is one of the rare exceptions, being part of a handful of exotics that are not regulated

by CITES. This is because these birds are very well regulated and farmed commercially on registered farms. SA Black Ostriches are classified as a composite breed that was developed in the early 1900’s.

The effectiveness of current production practices allows for no need to harvest wild, pure populations. The only necessity for the export of ostrich leather is the accompaniment of a Certificate of Origin.

Even though ostriches are not regulated by CITES, there are still various organizations and regulations in place to ensure that all animals are treated in ethical and safe conditions and receive humane care through the entire process. Ostrich farmers associated with Cape Karoo must comply with 5 basic animal care freedoms: 1. Freedom from hunger or thirst All animals must have easy access to clean drinking water and should be provided with a balanced, appropriate diet to suit their needs.

2. Freedom from discomfort An appropriate environment must be created that includes ample space, shelter and a comfortable resting area where needed.

3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease The health of the birds must be monitored continuously so that prevention, rapid diagnosis and treatment can be provided.

Ostriches are classified as free-range animals accustomed to the extreme heat and cold associated with semi-desert and arid regions of the world. ARSUTORIA SCHOOL: an important podium for CKI Ostrich Leather

For each designer the knowledge of materials is of particular importance within the creative process. Knowing how to treat, enhance and make the most of a material is the basis for creating beautiful, functional and prestigious products.

Cape Karoo International knows this well and therefore is proud to continue the important work done by the SAOBC with ARSUTORIA school for the past 10 years in promoting the qualities and characteristics of ostrich leather at the famous Milanese school of young fashion accessories designers and model makers.

For students, it is an excellent training opportunity to have at their disposal valuable ostrich skins from CKI to study and learn about with a view to developing a small collection of shoes and bags. In fact, in the factory inside the school, they were able to learn how to treat ostrich leather from CKI, to discover their main features, as well as learning how to use them correctly for a prototype or for any other industrial production.

Per ogni designer la conoscenza dei materiali è di particolare importanza all’interno del processo creativo. Saper trattare, valorizzare e sfruttare al meglio un materiale è la base per creare prodotti belli, funzionali e di prestigio.

Cape Karoo International lo sa bene ed è quindi orgogliosa di continuare l’importante lavoro svolto da SAOBC con la scuola ARSUTORIA negli ultimi 10 anni nel promuovere le qualità e le caratteristiche della pelle di struzzo nella famosa scuola milanese di giovani designer di accessori di moda e modellisti.

Per gli studenti è un’eccellente opportunità di formazione avere a disposizione preziose pelli di struzzo della CKI per studiarla e conoscerla al fine di sviluppare una piccola collezione di scarpe e borse. LeShow Istanbul will be held next January LeShow Istanbul si terrà il prossimo gennaio THE GOAL OF THE ORGANISERS IS TO BETTER SUPPORT THE LEATHER, FUR AND CLOTHING FASHION COMMUNITY IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES. THE DOORS OF THE ISTANBUL CONGRESS CENTER (ICC) WILL OPEN FROM 21 TO 23 JANUARY 2021.

The second edition of LeShow Istanbul held in 2020 recorded very positive results. 118 brands of international exhibitors and designers from 13 countries (Italy, Greece, Finland, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary, Belgium, Russian Federation, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Turkey and Turkmenistan) presented their leather, fur, textile outerwear, shoes, bags and accessories collections attracting the attention of 6,492 visitors from 65 nations.

Strong of this success, despite the difficult international situation, organisers have decided to support the business of the sector by proposing the next edition of the event from 21 to 23 January 2021.

Embodying the usual “Mix & Match” outerwear fashion concept, the 3rd LeShow Istanbul-2021 will bring together high-end leather and fur collections

that will be shown to a network of professionals from important shopping centres in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Russia and Central Asia.

During this extraordinary 3-day live event, approximately 150 international fashion brands will have the opportunity to meet and establish solid business relationships with around 10,000 visitors and 1,000 professional sector buyers from various geographic areas of the world.

The health and safety of all those taking part in the 3rd LeShow Istanbul-2021 will represent the top priority of the organisers who, together with the relevant authorities, will manage the event in full compliance with all established rules, adopting all modern health standards to ensure a safe environment.

Moreover, the material used for the accessories is a water-based solvent-free synthetic material with a glossy finish created by the Japanese Kuraray company together with the Tuscan-based Dicart with a procedure that reduces CO2 emissions by 35% and water consumption by 70%, limiting the use of organic solvents by 99%.
