Textiles on the foreground In recent seasons the world of footwear and accessories has been characterised by a different momentum in the use of materials.

In fact, the tendency to choose textiles for the production of uppers and the creation of leather goods is growing.

This phenomenon has its roots in two fundamental factors. First of all: today the world of accessories is dominated by total-look brands that often coordinate fabrics used in clothing with the same accessories.

The second point concerns, instead, the flexibility of the textile world which certainly offers infinite possibilities of combinations and processes.

But what are the most interesting market aspects at the moment in the textile industry?

The elephant in the room is represented by the world of sustainability. The textile sector is affected by it and important institutions have been questioning the possibility of a sustainable textile system for several years. Sustainability both in respect of production processes and in the search for fibres and materials that have an ethical or recycling approach - concept of “zero waste”, or circular fashion.

Another aspect that we will analyse in this special edition is the mix of fashion and performance. The trends of recent seasons have underlined the growing fusion between these two worlds. Brand with a sporty character that does not forget the fashion aspect and vice versa.

Obviously this trend requires suitable materials that can combine such different areas.

The third key topic is technology, or how technological advances can be integrated into the product sphere.

Concluding all this with the consideration that some interesting small companies could be defined as “the new face of modern craftsmanship”.

In crescita, infatti, la tendenza di scegliere tessili per la realizzazione di tomaie e la creazione del corpo pelletteria. Questo fenomeno affonda le radici in due fattori fondamentali. Primo: oggi il panorama del mondo accessori è dominato da brand total-look che spesso coordinano i tessuti utilizzati nell’abbigliamento con gli stessi accessori.

Il secondo punto riguarda, invece, la flessibilità del mondo tessile che offre sicuramente possibilità infinite di combinazioni e lavorazioni.

Ma quali sono gli aspetti di mercato più interessanti in questo momento nell’area tessile?

L’elefante nella stanza è rappresentato dal mondo della sostenibilità. Il settore dei tessuti ne è influenzato e importanti istituzioni si interrogano sulla possibilità di un sistema tessile sostenibile già da diversi anni. Sostenibilità sia rispetto i processi produttivi sia nella ricerca di fibre e materiali che presentino un approccio o etico, o di riciclo concetto di “zero waste”, o di moda circolare.

Altro aspetto che analizzeremo all’interno di questo speciale è la commistione tra moda e performance.

Le tendenze delle ultime stagioni hanno sottolineato la crescente fusione tra questi due mondi. Brand dal carattere sportivo che non dimenticano l’aspetto fashion, e viceversa. Ovviamente questa tendenza richiede materiali adatti che possano coniugare ambiti così differenti.

Terzo argomento chiave è la tecnologia, ovvero come si possano integrare i progressi tecnologici in ambito di prodotto.

Per concludere con una riflessione su alcune interessanti realtà che potrebbero essere definite “il nuovo volto dell’artigianato moderno”.

The world of the classic sportsman no longer exists; the clear distance that existed in the past between “technical” fabrics and “fashion” fabrics is gradually decreasing, leaving room for a new “hybrid” called “technical fashion”.

This process (which has been going on for almost 5 years) has had a big impact in all areas of textile application, from fashion to accessories, through interior design.

It is increasingly common that companies historically linked to technical production have begun to consolidate their presence within a completely new market.

Today, almost 90% of global consumers wear clothing or accessories (footwear and leather goods) that have some technical characteristics or materials drawn from the performance world.

Il mondo dello sportivo classico non esiste più; la distanza netta che sussisteva in passato tra tessuti “tecnici” e tessuti “moda” sta progressivamente diminuendo lasciando spazio ad un nuovo “ibrido” denominato “technical fashion”.

Questo processo (ormai avviato da quasi 5 anni) ha avuto un grosso impatto in tutti i settori di applicazione tessile, dalla moda all’accessorio, passando per l’interior design. È sempre più frequente che aziende storicamente legate a produzioni tecniche abbiamo iniziato a consolidare la propria presenza all’interno di un mercato completamente nuovo.

Oggi, quasi il 90% dei consumatori mondiali indossa abbigliamento o accessori (calzatura e pelletteria) che hanno in qualche modo caratteristiche tecniche o materiali attinti dal mondo performance.

MARKET TRENDS The French company JRC REFLEX, based in Romans, acquired the Italian company I.B.R. LTD (province of Bergamo) which holds the patent for the production of high visibility printed refractive products.

JRC is today a reference point for backlit fabrics: it stands out on the reflective market due to the high quality of its products and above all thanks to the type of technology used which involves spreading glass microspheres covered with a metal substrate which, if illuminated, reflects light. The fields of application of this product are endless and range from purely technical ones, such as the safety branch, to more contemporary fashion, passing through the automotive sector. The range of supports on which the JRC technology is applicable varies and includes shuttle-woven and stretch fabrics up to coagulated and directly spun supports. The latest novelty, presented at the ‘Performance Days’ of last May, is “Retro Reflection”, a very interesting product that combines technique and aesthetics. The new application allows you to create a two-tone effect that is activated with light. Starting from a white or black base, the illuminated fabric takes on different colours.

A possible effect thanks to the colouring of the coating, where two lights and microspheres are present, that reacts to the light source.

L’azienda francese JRC REFLEX, con sede a Romans, ha acquisito nel 2008 l’italiana I.B.R. s.r.l. (provincia di Bergamo) che detiene il brevetto per la realizzazione di prodotti rifrangenti stampati ad alta visibilità.

JRC è oggi punto di riferimento per i tessuti retro illuminati: si distingue sul mercato dei riflettenti per l’alta qualità dei prodotti e soprattutto per la tipologia di tecnologia utilizzata che prevede la spalmatura di microsfere di vetro ricoperte da un substrato di metallo che, se illuminato, riflette la luce. I settori di applicazione di tale prodotto sono infiniti e spaziano da quelli puramente tecnici, come il ramo sicurezza, alla moda più contemporanea, passando per l’automotive. La gamma dei supporti sui quali la tecnologia JRC è applicabile è varia e include tessuti a navetta e stretch fino a supporti coagulati e direttamente filati. L’ultima novità, presentata ai ‘Performance Days’ di maggio scorso, è “Retro Reflection”, un prodotto molto interessante che coniuga tecnica ed estetica. La nuova applicazione permette di creare un effetto a due toni che si attiva con la luce. Partendo da una base bianca o nera, il tessuto illuminato assume colorazioni diverse. Un effetto possibile grazie alla colorazione della spalmatura, in cui sono presenti due luci e delle microsfere che reagiscono alla fonte luminosa.

An interesting combination of fabric and performance is certainly the experience of Thindown®, the first feather fabric entirely made in Italy that revolutionises the concept of thermal insulation and padding, turning the feather into a firm fabric with high technical characteristics. NIPI is the company based in Chieti that has developed and patented the technical process of making this fabric entirely in feather, contributing to making its distribution uniform - thanks to the absence of seams in horizontal sections - and thus avoiding the passage of cold and material spills. The fabric has two outer layers of interlock mesh and a “feather heart” that remains compact and held in place by the polyurethane resin. In this way it is possible to create different thicknesses and apply processes such as cutting, laminating, embroidery and sewing while keeping the padded part.

Thindown® has obtained the Oeko-Tex 100 and RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certifications, or the certification that guarantees the well-being of the feathered animals used. Thindown® is available in the Duck and Goose versions, in the Thindown® Active variants, composed of a special blend of duck and polyester feather, Thindown® Flex, a stretch fabric that follows body movements ensuring high comfort and in the new Thindown® Recycled version, made with 100% recycled feather and recycled polyester scrim. Furthermore, Thindown® can be coupled with a special Downproof membrane, to be used with fine fabrics and cashmere or wool type knits.

But what are the performative aspects of Thindown®? Surely the lightness compared with technical features. In fact, with the same performance in terms of insulation and heat conservation, Thindown® is 70% lighter, thus making clothing and footwear lighter and more comfortable. In the same way the compact nature of the fabric allows to maintain excellent insulation characteristics, preventing the creation of “cold spots” and maintaining the heat for a decidedly higher duration. The application sectors, are not limited only to fashion and interior design, but also extend to technical sectors such as automotive and acoustic insulation.

Un connubio interessante tra tessuto e prestazione è sicuramente l’esperienza di Thindown®, primo tessuto in piuma realizzato interamente in Italia che rivoluziona il concetto d’isolamento termico e imbottitura, trasformando la piuma in un tessuto fermo dalle elevate caratteristiche tecniche. NIPI è l’azienda con base a Chieti che ha sviluppato e brevettato il processo tecnico di realizzazione di questo tessuto interamente in piuma contribuendo a renderne uniforme la distribuzione - grazie all’assenza di cuciture a sezioni orizzontali – ed evitando, così, il passaggio di freddo e le fuoriuscite di materiale. Il tessuto si presenta con due strati esterni di maglia interlock e un “cuore di piuma” che rimane compatto e fermato dalla resina poliuretanica. In questo modo è possibile realizzare diversi spessori e applicare lavorazioni quali il taglio, l’accoppiatura, il ricamo e la cucitura mantenendo la parte imbottita.

Ma quali sono gli aspetti performativi di Thindown®? Sicuramente la leggerezza comparata con le caratteristiche tecniche. Infatti, a parità di prestazioni di isolamento e conservazione del calore, Thindown® risulta più leggero del 70% rendendo dunque capi d’abbigliamento e calzature più leggeri e confortevoli. Allo stesso modo la natura compatta del tessuto permette di mantenere caratteristiche di isolamento eccellenti, impendendo la creazione di “punti freddi” e mantenendo il calore per una durata decisamente più alta. I settori di applicazione, che non si limitano alla sola moda e interior design, ma si allargano anche a settori tecnici quali automotive e isolamento acustico.

An example is ASOLTEX, a historic Venetian company specialised in technical lamination reserved to the most extreme sports activities. The Asolo based company responds to the growing demand for “green” items with the new family of breathable agglomerates based on recycled polyurethane. Items that stand out for their high capacity to absorb the moisture accumulated inside the shoe, which is trapped in the Airtex alveolar structure and, therefore, slowly released in the form of water vapor. A system that gives the foot a constant and pleasant feeling of dryness and comfort when wearing the shoe. Airtex is also breathable, comfortable, bacteriostatic and thermoformable. Encouraged by its intrinsic features that make it perfect for elegant, comfortable, performing and distinctive garments, it is tailored to its DNA thanks to the possibility of buying functional “ready to make” cuts for tailored suits. On the yarn side, Tollegno reinvents the concept of technical wool with “Harmony 4.0”. Its main characteristics are four: greater resistance, given by the most tenacious twisting; blend of Merino Wool yarn with siliconised nylon; washable thanks to the hydro-compact feature; greater fineness with equal deniers. Thanks to the collaboration with the company Sandonini, manufacturer of machines for the circular processing of uppers, Harmony 4.0 has been tested for footwear with excellent results.

Sandonini has also activated a collaboration with DI.VÉ, a Biella-based company that sells wool stock service yarns and at this moment promotes two extremely interesting products: Extreme and Denim.

Denim is an indigo-effect cotton yarn that has the particularity of being dyed in yarn with a treatment that prevents it from being drawn off after washing, making it particularly suitable also for knitting uppers.

The Vergnasco company has strengthened and expanded the Extreme line, dedicated solely to the union of fashion and technicality. The collection is an invitation to experimentation and change. field of functional yarns thanks to special mixes of natural and technical fibres or the twist of special nylon or polyester filaments, including the use of Trevira, a high performance polyester. But what really differentiates these products are the three surface treatments. Extreme H10 is a process with which new generation DWR (Durable Water Repellent) substances, an invisible water repellent and fluorinefree shield, are added to the yarns. The result is a breathable mesh that preserves a comfortable microclimate and lets the water slip off the surface, preventing it from being absorbed and making it easier to dry. Extreme H20, on the other hand, is a nano emulsion treatment that has the ability to transfer sweat from the skin to the surface of the mesh where it can evaporate quickly. It is an antistatic, breathable product that promotes a beneficial thermoregulation effect. Finally, Extreme H30, an ennobling process that protects fibres through special newgeneration “sanitised” products that protect the product from damage caused by mould and bacteria. All this guarantees a high level of comfort, practicality and hygienic safety in contact with the skin even after prolonged physical activity.

capsule collection in Merino wool, interpreting the creative identity of the brand. The objective of the project was the research and development of functional garments that respected the environment not only thanks to the use of natural Merino wool fibre, but also to the use of advanced flat-knit knitwear that minimised waste.

Starting from the iconic Napapijri garments, the young designers, with the help of the brand and The Woolmark Company, have studied flat-knit technological innovations in the field of knitwear to create high-performance garments exploiting the innovative STOLL technologies and the innumerable qualities of Merino wool.

Examples are the reflective yarn or the Grilon Yarn, a polyamide yarn which blends with wool and is strategically positioned in functional areas making the garments perform and resistant to abrasion and impact, thanks to the use of flat beds knitting technologies. The samples are made in collaboration with STOLL, Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia and Südwolle.

L’obiettivo del progetto è stato la ricerca e sviluppo di capi funzionali che rispettassero l’ambiente non solo grazie all’utilizzo della fibra naturale di lana Merino, ma anche all’impiego di tecnologie avanzate flat-knit per la maglieria che minimizzassero gli sprechi. Partendo dai capi iconici di Napapijri, i giovani designer, con l’aiuto del brand e di The Woolmark Company, hanno studiato le innovazioni tecnologiche flat-knit nel campo della maglieria per realizzare capi performanti sfruttando le innovative tecnologie STOLL e le innumerevoli qualità della lana Merino. Ne sono un esempio il filato riflettente o il Grilon Yarn, un filato poliammidico che si fonde con la lana, e che viene posizionato strategicamente in zone funzionali rendendo i capi performanti e resistenti all’abrasione e agli urti, grazie all’uso delle flat bed knitting technologies. I campioni sono realizzati in collaborazione con STOLL, Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia e Südwolle.

The last case study shifts slightly from the classical textile world and falls within the sphere of embroidery yarns. The AMANN GROUP, a leading manufacturer of sewing and embroidery threads, has created a series of “smart yarns”, conductors of electricity and data. The yarns are no longer simple stitches, but they open more and more interesting roads in the wearable tech field. They can replace plastic or metal parts inside electrical circuits in areas such as the automotive industry, but at the same time they can be used in the medical field to transfer information and regulate values such as humidity and heat. In footwear there is an application in orthopedics, for example in insoles and soles for diabetic patients where the control of perspiration levels is extremely important. All this is possible thanks to the “Sensorphil fluid” able to perceive the accumulation of sweat and water emanating from the human body. At the same time the company offers “Steeltech”, made with steel yarn, and “Silvertech”, made of silver in combination with copper and brass: both yarns are ideal for use both in weaving (shuttle weaving and knitting) and in embroidery works.

L’ultimo caso di studio si scosta leggermente dal mondo tessile classico e rientra nell’ambito dei filati per ricamo. Il GRUPPO AMANN, leader nella produzione di fili per cucitura e ricamo ha realizzato una serie di “smart yarns”, fili conduttori di elettricità e dati. I filati non sono più semplici punti di cucitura, ma aprono strade sempre più interessanti in ambito di wearable tech. Possono sostituire parti di plastica o metalliche all’interno di circuiti elettrici in ambiti come l’automotive, ma allo stesso tempo possono essere utilizzati in campo medicale per trasferire informazioni e regolare valori come l’umidità e il calore. The evolution of production processes in textiles PRESENTATION OF SOME TEXTILE COMPANIES THAT HAVE DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES FOR A DIFFERENT APPROACH ON MANUFACTURING PROCESSES It is important to remember that technology plays a fundamental role in the evolution of products in the contemporary textile world. In an increasingly demanding market, both in terms of speed presentation and technical features, which is always attentive to sustainability, it is necessary to create new production approaches that can influence the characteristics of the product or even just production processes.

This differentiated approach is fundamental to analyse some of the most interesting cases on the international scene. For example, if we talk about production processes, the new “Bestone”, made by Prato’s Beste - leader in the production of fabrics - allows any colour to be sampled with extreme precision through the electronic reading connected to an app. The customer can select up to 8 different textile bases to be tested and send the request to the company which, within 48 hours, undertakes to send a sample, from the classic lab dip up to a sampling of 5 metres. A revolutionary system especially because it reduces the colour sampling time (one of the most critical phases of textile sampling) assuring efficient colour interpretation service.

Moreover, the “Bestone” system has a positive impact on energy savings both for water consumption in the dyeing process and in terms of carbon dioxide production.

The new Airy Sektor proposed by Benq Materials also fits in the same perspective.

The company, which is part of the Taiwanese electronics group, has always specialised in the production of membranes and non-woven fabrics for

the production of screen films and for the medical sector. Starting from the technical branch, has been developed the Airy Sektor membrane, which represents an interesting evolution of waterproof products. It is a hydrophobic nano-porous-based membrane that acts in two directions: the 10 billion nano-pores inserted into the product prevent water penetration, which slides on the surface level, facilitating at the same time breathability and sweat expulsion towards the outside. A more competitive system compared to others that do not yet offer this technology. The only other hydrophobic membrane, in fact, is the Gore-Tex® from which Airy Sektor differs not using PFCs, chemical additives now included in the black list of harmful substances which will soon be out of business.

One of the most recent examples of technological evolution in textile processes is the “37.5® Technology” project. The American company Cocona presented an interesting process about yarn innovation that allows to regulate body temperature.

Imagine the operation of the air conditioning: when positioned on automatic, if the temperature changes, air conditioning or heating is activated to return to the ideal temperature.

The Cocona technology proposes the same principle through the insertion of nano particles inside the yarn itself (with a permanent effect on the fabric) in order to regulate the temperature of the human body through the accumulation of infrared rays emitted by the body and released, in the of sweat, always returning the value to 37.5 degrees Celsius, considered the ideal level for body functioning.

L’evoluzione dei processi produttivi nel tessile

È importante ricordare che la tecnologia svolge un ruolo fondamentale per l’evoluzione dei prodotti nel mondo tessile contemporaneo. In un mercato sempre più esigente, sia per velocità di presentazione che per caratteristiche tecniche, e sempre attento alla sostenibilità, è necessario realizzare nuovi approcci produttivi che possano influenzare le caratteristiche del prodotto o anche solamente i processi produttivi.

Questo approccio differenziato è fondamentale per analizzare alcuni casi, tra i più interessanti nel panorama internazionale. Ad esempio, se si parla di processi produttivi, il nuovo “Bestone”, realizzato dalla Beste di Prato - leader nella produzione di tessuti - permette di campionare con estrema precisione qualsiasi colore attraverso la lettura elettronica collegata a una app. Il cliente può selezionare fino a 8 differenti basi tessili da testare e inviare la richiesta all’azienda che, nel giro di 48 ore, si impegna a inviare un campione, dal classico lab dip fino a una campionatura di 5 metri. Un sistema rivoluzionario soprattutto perché riduce il tempo di campionatura colore (una delle fasi più critiche della campionatura tessile) e garantisce un servizio efficiente di interpretazione del colore.

Inoltre, il sistema “Bestone” ha un impatto positivo sul risparmio energetico sia per il consumo di acqua nel processo di tintura che di risparmio in termini di produzione di anidride carbonica.

Nella stessa ottica si inserisce anche il nuovo progetto Airy Sektor proposto da Benq Materials. L’azienda, che fa parte del gruppo taiwanese dedicato all’elettronica, è da sempre specializzata nella realizzazione di membrane e tessuti-non-tessuti destinati alla realizzazione di pellicole per schermi e per il settore medicale. Partendo dal ramo tecnico è stato sviluppata la membrana Airy Sektor che rappresenta un’interessante evoluzione dei prodotti waterproof. È una membrana idrofoba a base nano-porosa che agisce in due direzioni: i 10 miliardi

Uno dei più recenti esempi di evoluzione tecnologica nei processi tessili è il progetto “37.5® Technology”. L’azienda americana Cocona ha presentato un interessante processo di innovazione del filato che permette di termoregolare la temperatura del corpo. Immaginate il funzionamento dell’aria condizionata: quando posizionata su automatico, se la temperatura si modifica si attiva il condizionamento o il riscaldamento per ritornare alla temperatura ideale. La tecnologia di Cocona propone lo stesso principio attraverso l’inserimento di nano particelle all’interno del filato stesso (rendendo l’effetto permanente sul tessuto) in modo da regolare la temperatura del corpo umano attraverso l’accumulo dei raggi infrarossi emessi dal corpo e rilasciati in base alla quantità di sudore, riportando sempre il valore a 37,5 gradi Celsius, considerato il livello ideale per il funzionamento corporeo.

For several years the textile sector has seen the birth and often the failure of many projects and products linked to the concept of sustainability, a concept that is certainly very complex and not easy to interpret. In the last two years, however, the efforts of ‘sustainable’ fashion have not only intensified, but the topic is now considered a must for all the major players in the market, from companies to fairs (for example, Milano Unica has been dedicating, for already two editions, a cluster to sustainable products, creating fundamental guidelines related to product analysis).

But why is sustainability so important for fashion right now? The question finds the answer in the evolution of the consumer. In a world where those who buy have increasingly less need and are stimulated to buy only if moved by real interest, the creation of a ‘story’ is a fundamental element. In a historical moment where the awareness on the environmental theme has received everyone’s attention, ‘selling’ sustainability is no longer a plus for a brand, but a necessity. For this reason, those who produce materials today must rethink their collection or their processes in an eco-friendly way. A similar process has been observed in the leather world where green and vegetable tanning have been progressively successful, decreed by the ‘conscience’ of the final customer. But is it really possible to be sustainable and competitive as a textile company? It is surely a great challenge and, to date, many enter the arena without understanding the true implications and presenting only relatively sustainable products. Yet the expert and informed customer, be it the fashion brand or the end consumer, is not satisfied with a product simply defined as ‘recycled’, but requires certification (for example the Global Recycle Standard - GRS).

Da diversi anni il settore tessile ha visto nascere, e spesso fallire, molti progetti e prodotti legati al concetto di sostenibilità, un concetto sicuramente molto complesso e di non facile interpretazione. Negli ultimi due anni, però, gli sforzi della moda ‘sostenibile’ si sono non solo intensificati, ma l’argomento è ormai considerato un must per tutti i maggiori player del mercato, dalle aziende alle fiere (ad esempio, Milano Unica dedica, ormai da due edizioni, un cluster ai prodotti sostenibili, creando linee guida fondamentali per l’analisi dei prodotti).

Ma perché in questo momento la sostenibilità è un argomento così importante per la moda? La domanda trova risposta nell’evoluzione del consumatore. In un mondo dove chi compra ha sempre meno necessità ed è stimolato all’acquisto solo se mosso da vero interesse, la creazione di una ‘storia’ è un elemento fondamentale. In un momento storico dove la sensibilizzazione sul tema ambientale ha raccolto l’attenzione di tutti, ‘vendere’ la sostenibilità non è più un plus per un brand, ma una necessità. Per questo motivo, chiunque oggi produca materiali deve ripensare la propria collezione o i propri processi in chiave eco. Si è osservato analogo iter nel mondo della pelle dove la concia ‘green’ e al vegetale hanno riscosso un progressivo successo, decretato dalla ‘coscienza’ del cliente finale. Ma è veramente possibile essere sostenibili e competitivi come azienda tessile? Sicuramente è una grande sfida e, a oggi, molti entrano nell’arena senza comprenderne le vere implicazioni e presentando prodotti solo relativamente sostenibili. Eppure il cliente, sia esso il marchio di moda o il consumatore finale, è esperto e informato, non si accontenta di un prodotto semplicemente definito ‘riciclato’, ma ne richiede la certificazione (ad esempio la Global Recycle Standard - GRS).

SUSTAINABILITY BANANATEX® Bananatex® is a project born from the collaboration between the Swiss leather goods brand QWSTION, and two partner companies in Taiwan, the first specialised in yarns and the second, Hermin, in weaving and finishing.

The biodegradable material is the first entirely made with Abaca plants belonging to the Musaceae family (Bananoids) and which are typical of the Manila island (Philippines). It is an infesting plant that grows naturally on the island and, since it does not suffer the aggression of parasites, it does not need pesticides to survive. Finally, Abaca plantations help the local population to repopulate parts of the jungle seriously damaged by the massive cultivation of the palm. The stem of the plant is cut and long filaments are extracted from its marrow with which is made and subsequently spun a coagulated material similar to paper. The material, like canvas, is particularly resistant to abrasion and mechanical bending. The fabric is presented in natural colour (like the marrow of the plants) and in black, thread dyed with natural dyes. The fabric, dedicated to leather goods, is made waterproof through beeswax, a completely natural and water-repellent waste deriving from honey production. QWSTION has made several 100% natural products in Bananatex®, including briefcases and workbags. The project has had a three-year development period and is now open source and evolving.

Il materiale biodegradabile è il primo realizzato interamente a partire dalle piante di Abaca, appartenenti alla famiglia delle Musaceae (bananoidi) e tipica dell’isola di Manila (Filippine). La pianta è infestante, cresce naturalmente sull’isola e, poiché non subisce l’aggressione dei parassiti, non necessita pesticidi per sopravvivere. Le piantagioni di Abaca, infine, aiutano la popolazione locale a ripopolare parti della giungla seriamente danneggiate dalla coltivazione massiccia della palma. Il fusto della pianta viene tagliato e dal suo midollo si estraggono lunghi filamenti con cui si realizza un coagulato simile alla carta, che viene successivamente filato. Il materiale, simil canvas, ottenuto è particolarmente resistente all’abrasione e alle flessioni meccaniche. Il tessuto è presentato in colorazione naturale (come il midollo delle piante) e in nero, tintura in filo con coloranti naturali. Il tessuto, dedicato alla pelletteria, viene reso waterproof attraverso la cera d’api, uno scarto della produzione del miele, completamente naturale e idrorepellente. QWSTION ha realizzato in Bananatex® diversi prodotti 100% naturali, tra cui cartelle e zaini da lavoro. Il progetto ha avuto un periodo di sviluppo di tre anni ed è ora open source e in continua evoluzione.

Here are some examples of high-level sustainability, such as product or process, of companies that promote zero waste or companies that work on the concept of ‘organic’.

What is meant by ‘sustainable fabric? Application areas are certainly different, but in general the identified categories are four: eco-sustainability in the management of production processes, eco-sustainability in products, zero waste and recycling, absence of harmful chemicals.

The latter is the least interesting as the regulations on the compliance of chemical specifications are becoming more restrictive and every company that aims to export to countries like China, Japan and the United States is obliged to supply ‘clean’ products. Furthermore, the brands themselves speak up for greater transparency on the part of their suppliers in environmental matters.

The analysis of the first three case studies is the one of greatest interest, since some stimulating examples allow us to analyse different market approaches.

The first project concerns a synergy between three partners with different knowhow: Lenzing (leader in the production of eco fibres and artifical yarns), Santoni (leader in the production of circular knit machinery) and Procalçado (leader in the production of soles and rubber components). The three companies have joined forces to create a sustainable footwear project.

Cosa si intende per ‘tessuto sostenibile’? Gli ambiti sono sicuramente diversi, ma in linea di massima le categorie individuate sono quattro: eco-sostenibilità nella gestione dei processi produttivi, eco-sostenibilità nei prodotti, zero waste e riciclo, assenza di sostanze chimiche nocive.

Quest’ultima è la meno interessante poiché le normative in materia di conformità dei capitolati chimici risultano sempre più restrittive e ogni azienda che ambisca all’esportazione verso Paesi come Cina, Giappone e Stati Uniti, è obbligata a fornire prodotti ‘puliti’. I brand stessi, inoltre, si fanno portavoce in favore di una maggiore trasparenza da parte dei propri fornitori in materia ambientale.

L’analisi delle prime tre casistiche risulta quella di maggiore interesse, poiché alcuni stimolanti esempi consentono di analizzare i diversi approcci del mercato.

Il primo progetto riguarda una sinergia tra tre partner con know-how diversi tra loro: Lenzing (leader nella produzione di fibre e filati artificiali eco), Santoni (leader nella produzione di macchinari a maglia circolare) e Procalçado (leader nella produzione di suole e componenti in gomma). Le tre aziende si sono alleate per creare un progetto di calzatura sostenibile.

The concept of recycling and zero waste, that is giving a second life to products that are often polluting, is very important.

The high quantity of plastic substances (PET, PPE, PTE) thrown into oceans and that contribute to the destruction of different aquatic ecosystems is a problem that, fortunately, has aroused a stir in the media. AQUAFIL, an Italian spinning company which has always been a leader in the production of polyamide and nylon, has created an extraordinary product that is revolutionising the market: Econyl®. A fully extruded nylon yarn from the remains of fishing nets and plastic bottles recovered at sea.

The process involves the purchase of certified plastic waste batches. Each lot has a traceability code to trace the type of recycled product. The material is broken down and regenerated creating an extruded nylon yarn compound.

It is a highly innovative process since the company is able to trace the single batch of raw material, creating a transparent supply chain. However, Aquafil did not stop with the production and sale of yarn, but committed itself to collaborating and developing personalised and exclusive projects with the biggest brands in the world, including Adidas (which as of 2025 will manufacture footwear entirely produced with Econyl®), Gucci and Levi’s, just to name a few. In fact, the company’s objective is to raise awareness among the final consumer, in the hope that the concept of circular fashion will become the focus of all future fashion collections.

Il concetto di riciclo e zero waste, cioè donare una seconda vita a prodotti spesso inquinanti, è molto importante. Un problema che ha suscitato, per fortuna, scalpore mediatico, è l’elevata quantità di sostanze plastiche (PET, PPE, PTE) che vengono gettate negli oceani e che contribuiscono alla distruzione dei differenti ecosistemi acquatici. AQUAFIL, azienda di filatura italiana da sempre leader nella produzione di poliammide e nylon, ha creato un prodotto straordinario che sta rivoluzionando il mercato: Econyl®. Un filato di nylon interamente estruso a partire da resti di reti da pesca e bottiglie di plastica recuperate in mare.

Il processo prevede l’acquisto di batch certificati di rifiuti plastici. Ogni lotto ha un codice di tracciabilità per risalire al tipo di prodotto riciclato. Il materiale viene scomposto e rigenerato creando un compound estruso in filato nylon. È un processo altamente innovativo poiché l’azienda è capace di risalire al singolo lotto di materia prima, creando una filiera trasparente.

Aquafil non si è, però, fermata alla produzione e vendita del filato ma si è impegnata in prima persona a collaborare e sviluppare progetti personalizzati ed esclusivi con i più grandi brand al mondo, tra cui Adidas (che dal 2025 realizzerà calzature interamente prodotte con Econyl®), Gucci e Levi’s, solo per citare alcuni nomi. L’obiettivo dell’azienda, infatti, è la sensibilizzazione del consumatore finale, nella speranza che il concetto di moda circolare divenga il focus di tutte le future collezioni moda.

the performance of the shoe. Santoni is known for its “no waste” 3D Intarsia technology, which makes it possible to create knitted uppers in a very short period of time (from 5 to 7 minutes) and manages to work in 3D in the areas of eyelet laces. Finally, Procalçado is a leader in the production of soles and the ForEver® line offers various eco solutions including PURA LATEX®, a material extracted from rubber trees that come only from certified forests without intensive exploitation. The products made through this synergy have been presented recently, achieving an excellent public result.

There are companies that first started working on the concept of circular fashion and among them Ecomax Textile, based in Taiwan, is certainly worth mentioning. One of the very first to recycle PET starting from plastic bottles and creating PETSPUN®. The family-run company, led today by Mr. Mark, has progressively expanded its product range by introducing recycled yarns and fabrics from various production waste from the food industry such as rice, sorghum and oyster shells, as well as coal derived from bamboo. The last frontier is E-RECO®, a yarn made by recycling PVB (Butyral Polyvinyl), a component found in windscreens and car windows.

Other companies, on the other hand, are working on sustainability both from the point of view of materials research and the environmental impact of production processes. This is the case of Ratti, a leading company in the production of printed fabrics, and of Filmar, a manufacturer of cotton yarns. Both have de-

Una delle primissime a riciclare il PET partendo dalle bottiglie di plastica e creando PETSPUN®. L’azienda a gestione familiare, guidata oggi da Mr. Mark ha progressivamente allargato la propria gamma di prodotti introducendo filati e tessuti riciclati da diversi scarti di produzione dell’industria alimentare come il riso, il sorgo e le conchiglie delle ostriche, oltre al carbone derivato dal bamboo. Bioveg, is instead a line of articles characterized by its supports realized with recycled and vegetable origin raw materials. Furthermore, the energy employed during the coating process comes from renewable sources.

Furthermore, both companies are engaged in the development of eco products. Ratti has focused a lot on silk, linen, wool and organic hemp, but also on synthetic fabrics born from recycled yarns, while Filmar is the promoter of several projects including Nilo, the first long-filament cotton yarn traceable by the plant; Colorama, a collaboration project with design schools for creating digital colour palettes that help put an end to the waste when making physical samples; and the Cotton for Life initiative, which sees the company committed to working with a completely transparent supply chain in collaboration with Egypt, one of the main cotton producing countries.

The companies that are actively making commitments towards the transformation of their products in the green direction are many: in the footwear sector we can certainly mention Omnipel Technologies, historic textile converter based in Desenzano del Garda, since forever specialised in technical fabrics for high performance footwear. The company has already developed some lining and upper products that start from recycled yarns and follow GRS directives and for the next winter collection it is about to realise eco products to be used in wide-ranging footwear: from recycled Poron Resource up to Aloha, breathable lining material, through recycled eco-fur, nylon performance and 3D spacer.

la sostenibilità impegnandosi a livello produttivo a selezionare e pubblicare un report di consumo annuale riducendo in modo sensibile sia l’utilizzo di additivi chimici dannosi, sia le emissioni di anidride carbonica, perseguendo un minor utilizzo di elettricità e acqua. Inoltre, entrambe le aziende sono impegnate nello sviluppo di prodotti eco. Ratti ha puntato molto su seta, lino, lana e canapa biologica, ma anche su tessuti sintetici nati da filati riciclati. Mentre Filmar è promotrice di diversi progetti tra cui Nilo, primo filato di cotone a filamento lungo tracciabile dalla pianta; Colorama, progetto di collaborazione con le scuole di design per la creazione di palette colori digitali che aiutano mettere fine allo spreco di realizzare campioni fisici; e l’iniziativa Cotton for Life, che vede l’azienda impegnata a lavorare con una filiera completamente trasparente in collaborazione anche con l’Egitto, uno dei principali Paesi produttori di cotone.

Le aziende che stanno attivamente prendendo impegni verso la trasformazione dei propri prodotti in direzione green sono moltissime: nel settore della calzatura si può citare sicuramente Omnipel Technologies, storico converter tessile di Desenzano del Garda, da sempre specializzato in tessuti tecnici per la calzatura ad alte prestazioni. L’azienda ha già sviluppato alcuni prodotti fodera e tomaio che partono da filati riciclati che seguono le direttive GRS e sta realizzando, per la prossima collezione invernale, prodotti eco da impiegare nella calzatura a 360 gradi: dal Poron Embrance riciclato fino ad Aloha, materiale traspirante da fodera, passando per eco-pelliccia riciclata, nylon performance e spacer 3D.

While the world of fashion textiles is looking for new technologies and sustainable solutions, several industrial micro-realities still rexist moving in a hybrid world where traditional craftsmanship and modern taste come together to create a new aesthetic.

In an age where large-scale reproduction and digital technology are now fundamental elements for approaching the market, an opposite trend is becoming increasingly popular. In fact, for some seasons now, there has been a return to “personalisation” and to the numerical growth of consumers in search of products that incorporate ancient manufacturing features. And some companies are characterised by a unique material approach to fabrics, capable of making them unique pieces.

Mentre il mondo del tessile moda si lancia alla ricerca di nuove tecnologie e soluzioni sostenibili, resistono ancora diverse micro-realtà industriali che si muovono in un mondo ibrido in cui tradizione artigianale e gusto moderno si fondono per creare una nuova estetica.

In un’epoca dove la riproduzione in larga scala e il digitale sono ormai elementi fondamentali per approcciare il mercato, una tendenza opposta sta prendendo sempre più piede. Da qualche stagione, infatti, si assiste a un ritorno alla “personalizzazione” e alla crescita numerica di consumatori a caccia di prodotti che riprendano caratteristiche manifatturiere antiche. E alcune aziende si contraddistinguono proprio per un approccio materico unico ai tessuti, capace di renderli pezzi unici.

AMAIKE TEXTILE INDUSTRY Amaike Group is a Japanese company, based in Ishikawa, which has been specialising in the production of polyester fabrics since 1956 and which, in 2006, presented a new textile type, called “Super Organza”. This precious material is considered one of the most transparent fabrics on the market and comes from the union between Japanese artisans and textile researchers. The secret of lightness is given by the company’s ability to weave a polyester yarn of only 7 denier with a thickness equal to one fifth of a human hair, producing a product with a weight of 10 grams/sqm.

AMAIKE TEXTILE INDUSTRY Amaike Group è un’azienda giapponese, con sede a Ishikawa, che dal 1956 è specializzata nella realizzazione di tessuti in poliestere e che, nel 2006, ha presentato una nuova tipologia tessile, la “Super Organza”. Questo prezioso materiale è considerato uno dei tessuti più trasparenti presenti sul mercato e nasce dal connubio tra artigiani giapponesi e ricercatori tessili. Il segreto della leggerezza è dato dalla capacità dell’azienda di tessere un filato di poliestere di soli 7 denari con uno spessore pari a un quinto di un capello umano e che produce un prodotto dal peso piuma di 10 grammi/mq.

AUTHENTIC MATERIAL Authentic Material, a project born in a small workshop based in Toulouse, France, reconditions inert materials giving them new life. The concept is inspired by the metallurgical technique of melting and reusing metals. This technique is applied to various natural elements such as wood, leather, shells and bovine horns. In an ancient interpretation of the concept of circular production, the French company produces reconditioned panels that find application in the field of jewellery, eyewear and accessories in general, such as buttons, clamps and buckles.

AUTHENTIC MATERIAL Authentic Material, progetto nato in un piccolo laboratorio di Toulouse in Francia, ricondiziona materiali inerti conferendogli nuova vita. Il concetto prende spunto dalla tecnica metallurgica di fusione e riutilizzo dei metalli. Tale tecnica viene applicata a svariati elementi naturali quali legno, cuoio, conchiglie e corna bovine.

In un’interpretazione antichissima del concetto di produzione circolare, l’azienda francese realizza pannelli ricondizionati che trovano applicazione nel campo della gioielleria, dell’occhialeria e dell’accessorio in gene, come bottoni, morsetti e fibbie.

EYEWEAR MADE WITH AUTHENTIC MATERIAL PRODUCTS

CEMIA-RICH CEVIANORI Since 1976 the Cemia-Rich laboratory has been interpreting the ancient Kyoto paper production techique by creating fabrics.

Through hand-loom weaving, it is possible to produce washi paper inserts alternating them with cotton threads.

This technique was discovered by browsing the archives of the Kyoto castle, where register and book covers were made with this system. The most important feature of the fabric is its resistance over time, a factor that makes it particularly suitable also for making shoes and leather goods. The compactness of the cotton yarn with paper stripes increases the performance in terms of abrasion and durability.

The Japanese company also creates this product with a verticalised process, from the paper to the dyeing and printing of fabrics, all through rigorously manual processes.

GOLDEN SILK The Golden Silk farm was established in 2002 in the Siem Reap region, the cultural heart of Cambodia. For several centuries, in this area people have been preserving animal breeding and the production of “golden silk”, the Khmer silk, which has been used for generations to tailor clothes for the Angkor kings.

Today, the company has taken up this traditional technique and produces fabrics with different weaving techniques: from the traditional ikat to reserve designs or brocades intertwined with gold threads.

Moreover, the main characteristic of the company is the absolute verticalisation of the process: from breeding to spinning up to finishing. Everything is done in-house, creating not only a good environmental practice, avoiding the use of pesticides and chemical agents, but also playing an important social role in the community.

CEMIA-RICH CEVIANORI A partire dal 1976 il focus del laboratorio Cemia-Rich è stato quello di interpretare l’antica tecnica della produzione di carta di Kyoto creando dei tessuti.

Attraverso la tessitura con telaio manuale, si tramano inserti di carta washi alternandoli a fili di cotone.

Questa tecnica è stata scoperta sfogliando gli archivi del castello di Kyoto, dove le copertine dei registri e dei libri erano realizzate con questo sistema. La caratteristica più importante del tessuto è la resistenza nel tempo, fattore che lo rende particolarmente adatto anche alla realizzazione di calzature e pelletteria. La compattezza del filato di cotone con le strisce di carta alza le prestazioni in materia di abrasione e durevolezza.

L’azienda giapponese, inoltre, crea questo prodotto con un processo verticalizzato, dalla produzione della carta fino alla tintura e stampa dei tessuti, il tutto attraverso processi rigorosamente manuali.

GOLDEN SILK La fattoria Golden Silk nasce nel 2002 nella regione di Siem Reap, cuore culturale della Cambogia. Da diversi secoli, in quest’area, si preserva l’allevamento e la realizzazione della “golden silk”, la seta Khmer che per generazioni è stata utilizzata per confezionare i vestiti dei re di Angkor.

L’azienda, oggi, ha ripreso questa tecnica tradizionale e realizza tessuti con tecniche di intreccio differenti: dal tradizionale ikat ai disegni a riserva o ai broccati intrecciati con fili d’oro.

La caratteristica principale dell’azienda, inoltre, è l’assoluta verticalizzazione del processo: dall’allevamento alla filatura fino ai finissaggi. Tutto viene realizzato in-house, creando non solo una buona pratica a livello ambientale, evitando l’utilizzo di pesticidi e agenti chimici, ma svolgendo anche un importante ruolo sociale nella comunità.

ATELIER MARION CHOPINEAU

ATELIER MARION CHOPINEAU A multidisciplinary research is the main feature of the Parisian atelier Marion Chopineau. The designer combines traditional techniques such as embroidery, macramé, weaving, plissé and dyeing, with modern techniques such as 3D modelling and laser cutting. These processes are often combined with techniques typical of other areas such as sculpture and mosaic. The atelier’s ability is to create unique products like silicone “jerseys” made for Maison Margiela with 3D printing. The designer’s eclecticism lies in using completely different materials, from textile fibres to fur, passing through unusual materials such as silicone and ceramic materials.

CÉCILE FEILCHENFELDT Cécile Feilchenfeldt created her own atelier in Paris after working for several years as a set and costume designer for important institutions such as the ComédieFrançaise in Paris and the Zurich Opera. Its main feature is to apply the traditional technique of flat knitting to contemporary yarns and unusual materials. Structures are modelled like sculptures through the use of metal wires, plastic inserts and self-deforming nylon yarns creating structures that seem to defy gravity.

Experimentation is the basis of the creativity of the designer who is able to generate “movement” and to make garments and accessories directly through knit weaving without the use of sewing machines. This technique has allowed Cécile to collaborate with different realities including Maison Schiaparelli.

CÉCILE FEILCHENFELDT FOR ELSA SCHIAPARELLI HAÛTE COUTURE

ATELIER MARION CHOPINEAU Una ricerca multidisciplinare è la caratteristica principale dello studio parigino Marion Chopineau. La designer combina tecniche tradizionali come il ricamo, il macramè, l’intreccio, il plissé e la tintura, con tecniche moderne come la modellazione 3D e il taglio laser. A queste lavorazioni vengono spesso affiancate tecniche tipiche di altri ambiti come la scultura e il mosaico. La capacità dell’atelier è quella di realizzare prodotti unici come le “maglie” in silicone realizzate per Maison Margiela con la stampa 3D. L’ecletticità della designer sta nell’utilizzare materiali completamente diversi, dalle fibre tessili alla pelliccia, passando per materiali inusuali come il silicone e le materie ceramiche.

CÉCILE FEILCHENFELDT Cécile Feilchenfeldt ha creato il proprio atelier a Parigi dopo aver lavorato per diversi anni come scenografa e costumista per importanti istituzioni come la Comédie-Française a Parigi e l’Opera di Zurigo. La sua caratteristica principale è quella di applicare la tecnica tradizionale della maglia piana a filati contemporanei e materiali inusuali. Le strutture realizzate si modellano come sculture attraverso l’uso di fili metallici, inserti plastici e filati nylon auto-deformanti che creano strutture che sembrano sfidare la gravità.

La sperimentazione è alla base della creatività della designer che è in grado di generare “movimento” e di realizzare capi e accessori direttamente attraverso la tessitura a maglia senza l’utilizzo di macchine da cucire. Questa tecnica ha permesso a Cécile di collaborare con diverse realtà tra cui la Maison Schiaparelli.

LIVING BLUE Living Blue, a cooperative organisation born from the NGO Care, is a project that brings together an entire chain of artisans in Bangladesh dedicated to the cultivation of the “Indigofera Tinctoria”, a plant with which indigo pigment is produced. The organisation’s primary objective is to develop the socioeconomic conditions of the Rangpur region.

The peculiarity of the project is being able to combine reserve dyeing techniques through the Tie-Dye for fabrics or Shibori for yarns: these procedures allow to create patterns on some areas of the material through knots and ligatures.

Finally, embroidery, quilting and needle-punching processes that resume the region’s centuries-old traditions should also be underlined.

LIVING BLUE Cooperativa nata dalla ONG Care, Living Blue è un progetto che raggruppa un’intera filiera di artigiani in Bangladesh dediti alla coltivazione della “Indigofera Tinctoria”, pianta con cui si produce il pigmento indaco. L’organizzazione ha come obiettivo primario quello di sviluppare le condizioni socioeconomiche della regione di Rangpur.

La particolarità del progetto è quella di riuscire a combinare tecniche di tintura a riserva attraverso il Tie-Dye per stoffa o Shibori per i filati: queste procedure permettono di creare pattern su alcune aree del materiale tramite nodi e legature.

Infine, da citare, anche le lavorazioni ricamo, trapuntatura e agugliatura che riprendono le tradizioni secolari della regione.

In the 84th edition, the Pitti Yarns salon proposed a careful reflection on the connections between fashion and sport.

Nell’edizione numero 84 il salone Pitti Filati ha proposto un’attenta riflessione sulle connessioni tra moda e sport.

The latest edition of Pitti Yarns, held in Florence from 23 to 25 January 2019, presented yarn collections for the SS 2020 season.

The central theme was the “Techno Luxury”, or the combination of noble and technical materials. A theme developed to the maximum within the Space area Research conceived by fashion designer Angelo Figus.

In the creative workshop, set up inside this space the subject sport, Far East (with the upcoming Tokyo Olympics) and sub-cultures were discussed. The result was a reflection on the inspirational importance of new sports accepted as an Olympic category, such as skate and surf, typical fruits of youth underground culture. It is no coincidence that the project’s partner was the giant Carvico - Jersey Lomellina, world leader in warp-knit fabrics for sport.

The new password could therefore be “mixture”. A mixture of yarns for new hybrid stylistic codes.

The important focus on sustainability was emphasised above all in the MODA and SDGS project promoted by Filmar, which saw young designers talk about circular fashion, zero waste and environment.

These aspects have also distinguished proposals of the various companies that have divided themselves between research on sustainable, innovative yarns and the fusion of noble fibres (wool, cotton and cashmere on all) and technical fibres (nylon and polyester).

The event was very lively and, beyond official data (registering a total of 4.300 visitors in 3 days), exhibitors expressed general satisfaction.

The issues addressed, in fact, find perfect feedback in customer requests and the presence of finished product designers, as well as yarn buyers, confirming the fair as a reference point for stylistic research.

L’ultima edizione di Pitti Filati, tenutasi a Firenze dal 23 al 25 gennaio 2019, ha presentato le collezioni di filati per la stagione SS 2020.

Il tema centrale è stato il “Techno Luxury”, ovvero l’accostamento di materiali nobili e tecnici. Tematica sviluppata al massimo all’interno dell’area Spazio Ricerca concepita dal fashion designer Angelo Figus.

Nel laboratorio creativo, allestito all’interno di questo spazio, si è discusso di sport, Far East (con l’occasione delle imminenti Olimpiadi di Tokyo) e sub-culture.

Ne è scaturita una riflessione riguardo l’importanza ispirazionale dei nuovi sport accettati come categoria olimpica, quali skate e surf, tipici frutti della cultura underground giovanile. Non casuale che partner del progetto fosse il colosso Carvico - Jersey Lomellina, leader mondiale nei tessuti indemagliabili per lo sport.

La nuova parola d’ordine potrebbe quindi essere “commistione”. Commistione di filati per nuovi codici stilistici ibridi.

Il focus importante sulla sostenibilità è stato sottolineato soprattutto nel progetto MODA e SDGS promosso da Filmar che ha visto giovani designer dialogare sui temi della moda circolare, dello zero waste e dell’ambiente.

Questi aspetti hanno contraddistinto anche le proposte delle diverse aziende che si sono divise tra ricerca sul sostenibile, filati innovativi e la fusione tra fibre nobili (lana, cotone e cashmere su tutte) e fibre tecniche (nylon e poliestere).

La kermesse è stata molto vivace e, al di là dei dati ufficiali (registrati un totale di 4,300 visitatori in 3 giorni), gli espositori hanno manifestato una generale soddisfazione.

Le tematiche affrontate, infatti, trovano perfetto riscontro nelle richieste dei clienti e la presenza di designer di prodotto finito, oltre che di buyer di filati, confermando la fiera come punto di riferimento per la ricerca stilistica.

The February edition of Milano Unica focused its attention on expanding the sustainability analysis.

L’edizione di febbraio di Milano Unica ha puntato l’accento ed espanso l’analisi sulla sostenibilità.

The latest edition of Milano Unica, held in Milan from 5 to 7 February, has imposed itself in the textile scene above all due to the focus on environmental issues.

In fact, the “Sustainability Project” was presented for the second edition; within it is proposed a mapping of textile articles and accessories (this year 700 samples analysed) that respect at least 1 of the 3 criteria of the project: a supply chain free from dangerous chemical substances, models of circular production and integrated management of processes, energy savings and eco-yarns use. In this sense, the area set up inside the fair allows visitors to directly receive by email the product cards they are interested, creating a mapping of the requests.

Alongside the sustainable project, the focus on the international scene characterised by the “Korea and Japan Observatory”, where Korean and Japanese companies showcase their technologies and innovations is also to be mentioned.

Another novelty presented during the February fair was the presentation of the “e-milanounica” project, a marketplace platform launched in a pilot version and created in collaboration with Pitti Immagine. The digital platform (which originates from that of Pitti) was developed by Milano Unica to create a digital “place” consisting of a direct meeting between buyers and vendors.

The fair was characterised by a stable presence of visitors, around 6.000, but it found a drop in Chinese visitors and a rise in Korean visitors, given that it marked the strong interest of that country for Italian textile products. Beyond data, however, the fair was less lively than in previous editions.

L’ultima edizione di Milano Unica, tenutasi a Milano dal 5 al 7 febbraio, si è imposta nel panorama tessile soprattutto per il focus sulle tematiche ambientali.

Infatti, per la seconda edizione è stato presentato il “Progetto Sostenibilità”; all’interno di esso si propone una mappatura di articoli tessili e accessori (quest’anno 700 campioni analizzati) che rispettino almeno 1 dei 3 criteri del progetto: filiera libera da sostanze chimiche pericolose, modelli di produzione circolare e la gestione integrata dei processi, del risparmio energetico e utilizzo di filati eco. In questo senso, l’area allestita all’interno della fiera permette ai visitatori di ricevere direttamente via mail le schede dei prodotti di loro interesse, creando di fatto una mappatura delle richieste.

Da segnalare, a fianco del progetto sostenibile, anche il focus sul panorama internazionale connotato dal “Korea e Japan Observatory”, dove aziende coreane e giapponesi mettono in mostra le proprie tecnologie e innovazioni.

Altra novità presentata durante la fiera di febbraio è stata la presentazione del progetto “e-milanounica”, una piattaforma di marketplace lanciata in versione pilota e realizzata in collaborazione con Pitti Immagine. La piattaforma digitale (che prende origine da quella di Pitti) è stata sviluppata da Milano Unica per creare un “luogo” digitale dove ci sia un diretto incontro tra buyer e vendor.

La fiera si è connotata per una presenza stabile di visitatori, intorno ai 6.000, ma ha riscontrato un calo dei visitatori cinesi e un rialzo di quelli coreani, dato che segna il forte interesse di quel Paese per i prodotti tessili italiani. Al di là dei dati, però, la fiera è risultata meno vivace rispetto alle edizioni precedenti.

Première Vision presents itself on the market with the most complete offer in the fashion sector, between digital and fair.

The last edition of the Paris fair, held from 12 to 14 February 2019, stood out for the presence of over 53.000 visitors and above all for a transversal offer in the sector, which makes the event the most complete in the fashion sector.

Attendance is slightly down compared to the same edition in 2018 but there is a constant flow of visitors, especially Europeans, with the French leading the way for over 15.000 presences.

The integration of “Marketplace”, the platform for direct online sales, activated already last September as a pilot project, now open to all exhibitors in the supply chain, is very interesting.

Also important are the different thematic areas that focus on specific topics, including the “Wearable Lab” where interesting technological research projects and integration with the textile sector are presented, including emerging designers and start-ups.

The focus is also on sport-tech with a trend area dedicated to more technical aspects of fabrics that marry trends of the new season, thus creating new style hybrids.

Also noteworthy is the area dedicated to the “Maison d’Exceptions”, that is a selection of laboratories and artisan realities that are imposed on the international fashion scene. A section of artisan experimentation and a combination of modern aesthetics and ancient techniques.

L’ultima edizione della fiera parigina, tenutasi dal 12 al 14 febbraio 2019, si è contraddistinta per la presenza di oltre 53,000 visitatori e soprattutto per un’offerta trasversale nel settore, che rende la kermesse la più completa del settore moda.

Le presenze risultano leggermente in calo rispetto alla medesima edizione del 2018 ma registrano un flusso costante di visitatori, soprattutto europei, con in testa, ovviamente, i francesi per oltre 15,000 presenze.

Di sicuro interesse l’integrazione di “Marketplace”, la piattaforma di vendita online diretta, attivata già lo scorso settembre come progetto pilota, oggi aperta a tutti gli espositori della filiera.

Importanti anche le diverse aree tematiche che pongono l’accento su specifici argomenti, tra cui il “Wearable Lab” dove vengono presentati interessanti progetti di ricerca tecnologica e integrazione con il settore tessile, tra designer emergenti e start-up.

Focus anche sullo sport-tech con un’area trend dedicata agli aspetti più tecnici dei tessuti sportivi che sposano i trend della nuova stagione, creando così nuovi ibridi di stile.

Inoltre, da segnalare, l’area dedicata alle “Maison d’Exceptions”, ovvero una selezione di laboratori e realtà artigianali che si impongono sulla scena della moda internazionale. Una sezione di sperimentazione artigianale e di combinazione tra estetica moderna e tecniche antiche.

Techtexil & Texprocess was a huge success and opened a new window on the textile world.

Techtexil & Texprocess ha riscosso un enorme successo e aperto una nuova finestra sul mondo tessile.

The Techtexil & Texprocess festival, held at Messe Frankfurt from 14 to 17 May, was a huge success with the public and exhibitors.

The fair, held every two years in Frankfurt, attracted a large number of exhibitors (over 1.800) confirming the strong interest in technical fabrics and more.

The event, in fact, involved vertically the entire supply chain: from machinery (printers, prototyping machines, sewing machines and robots) to yarns and threads for weaving and processing, up to fabrics and design.

An international fair that welcomed visitors from over 116 countries with varied and transversal interests (from contractors to fashion).

But also smart textiles and, above all, the optimisation of processes with the presence of “micro factories”, areas where the entire process of making garments and accessories was carried out, from CAD design to the creation of the prototype.

Thematic areas, Suistanable awards and a dynamic calendar of seminars have made the event lively and buzzy.

La kermesse Techtexil & Texprocess, tenutasi presso Messe Frankfurt da 14 al 17 maggio, ha riscosso un enorme successo di pubblico ed espositori.

La fiera, che si tiene ogni due anni a Francoforte, ha richiamato un nutrito numero di espositori (oltre 1.800) confermando il forte interesse per i tessuti tecnici e non solo.

L’evento, infatti, ha coinvolto in verticale tutta la filiera: dai macchinari (stampanti, macchine per prototipia, macchine da cucire e robot) ai filati e fili per tessitura e lavorazioni, fino ai tessuti e al design.

Una fiera internazionale che ha accolto visitatori da oltre 116 Paesi dai variegati e trasversali interessi (dal contractor fino alla moda).

Focus centrale, la sostenibilità. Ma anche smart textile e, soprattutto, l’ottimizzazione dei processi con la presenza delle “micro factory”, aree dove veniva svolto tutto il processo di realizzazione di capi e accessori, dalla progettazione a CAD fino alla realizzazione del prototipo.

Aree tematiche, Suistanable award e un calendario dinamico di seminari hanno reso l’evento vivace e frizzante.

How do you orient yourself in the panorama of textile fairs worldwide? Which events are best suited for stylistic research? If you work in the accessories sector, is it worth attending more fashion-oriented fairs?

The first question to be asked is whether, working almost exclusively in the accessories sector, it is useful to attend fairs designed mostly for clothing.

The answer is obviously yes because, as never before, the contamination between fashion and accessory is strong, and the influence of the clothing world on footwear and leather goods trends is crucial. Moreover, especially in the textile sector, increasingly more companies, once focused on “fashion” fabrics, have adapted their productions to different areas too.

But what are the features of the individual fairs? Let’s see them in detail.

La prima domanda da porsi è se, lavorando quasi esclusivamente negli gli accessori, sia il caso di frequentare fiere pensate maggiormente per l’abbigliamento. La risposta è ovviamente sì poiché, mai come in questo momento, la contaminazione tra moda e accessorio è forte, nonché determinante l’influenza del mondo abbigliamento sulle tendenze di prodotto calzatura e pelletteria. Inoltre, soprattutto in ambito tessile, sempre più aziende, un tempo focalizzate sui tessuti “moda”, hanno adattato le proprie produzioni anche ad ambiti differenti. Ma quali sono le caratteristiche delle singole fiere? Vediamole in dettaglio.

PITTI FILATI, which at chronologically is always the first of the trade fair cycle, is important to understand the major imprinting in the sector and to carry out research especially in the field of textures and colours.

PITTI FILATI, che a livello temporale è sempre la prima del ciclo fieristico, è importante per capire i maggiori imprinting del settore e per compiere una ricerca soprattutto in ambito texture e colori.

If your field of research also involves companies from the Far East, especially Chinese firms, INTERTEXTILE in Shanghai (or its smaller version, TEXWORLD in Paris) are an excellent reference.

The approach of these fairs is different from the previous ones. The focus on quality remains, but volumes gain importance, in fact minimum order values tend to be higher.

Se il vostro ambito di ricerca coinvolge anche aziende del Far East, soprattutto cinesi, l’INTERTEXTILE di Shanghai (o la sua versione in scala minore, la TEXWORLD di Parigi) sono un ottimo riferimento. L’approccio di queste fiere è diverso rispetto le precedenti. Rimane il focus sulla qualità, ma acquistano importanza i volumi, infatti i minimi d’ordine sono tendenzialmente più alti.

The most complete offer in the sector is provided, instead, by PREMIÈRE VISION of Paris, which involves the whole chain in the event. Given that the fair is increasingly a showcase for textile manufacturers and brands, it is important to carefully select which companies to visit through a selection of different thematic areas. The “yarns” area dedicated to yarns and the “knit” area related to knitwear innovations are interesting.

L’offerta più completa del settore è fornita, invece, dalla PREMIÈRE VISION di Parigi, che coinvolge nell’evento tutta la filiera. Dato che la fiera è sempre più una vetrina per produttori e brand del tessile, è importante selezionare con cura quali aziende visitare attraverso una selezione delle diverse aree tematiche. Interessante l’area “yarns” dedicata ai filati e l’area “knit” legata alle innovazioni sulla maglieria.
