The Journey to becoming Dr. Bell

Growing up in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, I never saw a doctor that looked like me. Always having a desire to pursue medicine in some facet my parents afforded me the opportunity to participate in science and medically geared enrichment programs. These programs continued to spark my interest and provided me with the tools I needed to succeed in math and science throughout high school and undergrad. During my undergraduate matriculation, I took the advantage of every opportunity to broaden my resume. I participated in research, became a member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, modeled, and cheered. My involvement in research propelled me to become the first student in Elizabeth City State University’s history to be awarded the UNCF Merck Science Initiative Award.

The journey to becoming a healthcare professional takes a lot of endurance. Whether you are trying to become a nurse, physician, dentist, physical therapist, or occupational therapist; understand that you are making a huge investment. You are investing your time, money, and energy. You are also sacrificing time with family friends, your freedom to travel and your sleep schedule. It may sound like a lot, but believe me, the reward, is worth the hassle! Accomplishing your goals and helping those who need it most with the skill set you have gained, is priceless! Always remember your why and never give up!

During undergrad, I also had the opportunity to tutor my peers in various subjects, which sparked my interest in teaching. After completion of my B.S degree in Chemistry, I journeyed to Fuquay Varina, North Carolina where I began teaching mathematics at the local high school. While there I also coached the step team, which was an absolute joy. While teaching, I discovered my love for dentistry, and applied to dental school. Leaving my students to begin my academic journey, was one of the toughest things I had to do. At East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine (ECU SoDM), I became highly involved in our clubs and organizations. From the pediatric club to the Student National Dental Association and the American Student Dental Association, I prided myself on being active and being elected into

leadership roles. Being passionate about the progression of minorities in the dental field, I became heavily involved in the Student National Dental Association, holding local and national roles. At ECU SoDM, I served as Vice President and President. While Nationally serving as Corporate Roundtable Representative, President- Elect, President and now Immediate Past President.

Serving SNDA on the local and national level was one of the most rewarding experiences of my dental school career. I made friends that are now like family, found my passion for mentoring and made a host of connections with mentors and colleagues across the United States.

These connections have continued to help me, as I graduated dental school, began residency in Atlanta, GA and now as I am preparing to transition back to North Carolina to begin practicing. Throughout my dental school matriculation and my current residency experience, I have

Knowing the application process and what the admissions committees are looking for is vital. The earlier you start researching the more prepared you will be.

Make a Timeline! A goal without a plan is just a dream.

There a lot of steps to preparing yourself to apply to professional school. A timeline will help to get and keep you focused. It’s never too early to begin planning.

Network and Connect with others on your journey! When I was in dental school my classmates were my favorite people. Together we weathered the storms of dental school and celebrated our wins. Surround yourself with a group of likeminded individuals, that can help propel you as you work towards your goals.

Submit applications early! Applying early to programs is key to your acceptance. The earlier your materials are in, the closer you will be to the front of the line for review. Waiting until the end of the cycle to apply puts you at the end of the batch for interviews. Apply early, interview early, and secure your seat!

Don’t allow a “NO” to deter you!

A few bad test scores, terrible semester or failed entrance exam does not disqualify you from being able to pursue your health care career. Dust yourself off, pray, figure out a new way to study and get back to it. You can do it!

Why did I become a Master Esthetician?

Since 2016 I have been a licensed barber in the state of Washington. In barber school, I made a goal list of all of the dreams I wanted to achieve. Within the first three years of barbering, I achieved every goal I had made for myself. It wasn’t easy however, I was determined. Then one Saturday after a long week, I looked in the mirror and told myself that I wanted to do more.

I chose to further my education and services by diving into the world of aesthetics. I saw a lack of male estheticians nationwide. I viewed that as an opportunity to help bridge the gap and for me to be a

source of information from the perspective of an esthetician that looks like me. I did this not for myself, but for men to see that skin care is not just for women. I service both men and women equally allowing other men to see that taking care of your skin is an essential aspect to add to your everyday regiment.

ife as an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. I say that from a “pull yourself up by your boot-straps, when you still have to figure out how you are going to get boots”, perspective. Do not forget the straps, they come separately. Some days, building a consistent revenue-generating business can seem impossible. Just keep working and then one day you will see fruit from your hard labor. It is important to be smart and consistent. I am a Content Creator on Youtube.

When I first started my channel, Nathena Antoinette, I focused on beauty and motherhood. As I evolved, I added more personal content to my channel. Evolving is a good thing. I love the healing space that some of my videos have created for others. I want to lean more into those intentions. It is crucial to have a purpose behind your channel. A reason why. Even if the reason is to appease people’s audio sensory palette.

Also known as ASMR. Who would have thought someone could get rich by recording a video with a high-quality microphone and sticking their fist into a bucket of Nutella just to bask in the sound it makes.

Do not be afraid to create content that you genuinely love out of fear that no one will be interested. Yes, you are one in a million but there are about 4.2 billion people who are social media users. This means there are at least 4000 other ones in a million too. Chances are, there is some-

one out there who will find value in what you are putting out. uthenticity is important. The main point is to be honest with yourself throughout your journey. Self-awareness is a major key.

To grow, one must be aware of their shortcomings. Accessing where you are on your journey, making a goal, and putting systems in place to achieve those goals is vital. My last bit of advice is to take advantage of your resources. Watch Youtube videos, attend webinars, read blogs, and submerge yourself in spaces with likeminded individuals. You are going to be amazed at the growth in your journey if you put your all into it. I remember stressing because I was only getting 4 views in two days. Now I sift through emails from companies who want to collaborate with me. While the milestones in my professional journey are worth celebrating, those are not my major highlights. Every time I put myself back together to be better in front of my camera is apotheosis for me.

reetings my fellow business professionals, entrepreneurs, marketers, and consumers. My name is Savion Morris and I am the founder and owner of Jesuis Marketing Firm & EDITS Magazine.

I developed my business from the love of helping others. Early in my career before I even knew I was on my career path I was a everyday sales associate at Ann Taylor, a high-end women’s retail store that sold business and business casual attire. At the time I was a full-time student at the Art Institute of Atlanta working toward my BS in Fashion Retail/Marketing Management.

I also worked as an instructor for Barbizon, USA, a nationwide Talent agency and school or modeling, acting, and personal development. I was completely over worked and still trying to figure out life. As an associate with Ann Taylor is was promoted fairly quickly into management based on my services skills and knowledge. I Then made my way to the merchandising department. With this I executed and assessed store sets and layout. I enjoyed every bit of it. Even fighting with the mannequins as I dressed them. During the same period with Barbizon I was asked to be apart of the scouting team. My roll was to travel and seek potential talent. My humble beginnings started to develop into something. At the Art Institute I was introduced to various people, resources, and opportunities that would help shape my career. Through this I was able to land the role of Creative Director for a plus size clothing line, Fluff Couture. Working with this brand was so rewarding. I learned a lot about myself and business. I also learned that I didn’t know as much as I thought I knew. I was living by this statement “fake it, until you make it”. I said that to my professor in class one day and he replied “No, fake it until you become it”. At that moment that was the most influential statement that anyone had ever made to me. I began to dive deeper into marketing. It was a world I never knew I would love so much.

Growing up I had always had a marketing mind-set. I remember as a child selling all my toys just so I could buy more or other things I desired. After I began to take my marketing career seriously

more opportunities fell in my path. I took on my first PR client Brittany Shakura. Still unaware of my career path I continued to work various jobs in the mix. One day it dawned on me that I was already on my career path I just had to focus. I thought I had everything figured out. I knew I was going to be in the marketing business. I went full force into marketing and just assumed everything was going to go as planned. As time went on I began to realize life had other plans for me. There were a few ups and downs, twists and turns in the road. A few that I thought broke me down.

It is in the face of adversity when you discover your true potential.

Like any business-minded individual I went back to the drawing board. I evaluated where is was in life and business and where I wanted to go. I knew what I wanted to achieve. With an amazing support system and work ethic in April of 2017 Jesuis Marketing Firm was established. I wanted to takeover the marketing world. I found love within helping others and business development. It brings me joy to help others succeed and animate their ideas. As the company grew I realized I needed to streamline my business and focus on a specific target market. While I would love to be able to assist all businesses, brands, and individuals in all areas I simply cannot. I have been fortunate enough to gain the knowledge and experiences that have been presented to me. There are times of reflection that I discover myself thinking “I wish I knew this” or “I wish someone told me that”. Opportunities and knowledge are available to the same individuals. I wanted to share my knowledge that I have gained within the course of my professional career to continue to help those that seek greater knowledge and understanding of business.

I wanted this information to be accessible to everyone. From the young and hopeful to the established professional. EDITS Magazine was designed to just do that. I wanted to create something for the modern business enthusiast. Cultivated to inform and motivate readers with convenient accessibility.
