In the grand scheme of golf media, Golf Central Magazine can absolutely be described as having a folksy, down-home, and unpretentious spirit—especially when compared to corporate giants like Golf Digest.

A “For the People” Mission: (Not to be confused with the #1 Personal Injury Law Firm) I started the publication (originally Florida Golf Central) with the explicit goal of creating unique heartfelt, fun, and non-intimidating features for both avid players and absolute beginners.

A “Motley Crew” Personality: The staff explicitly describes themselves as a “motley crew” who enjoy well-timed jokes and storytelling, rejecting the stuffy new money attitudes who have something to prove.

Deep Regional and Charitable Roots: Instead of just focusing on multi-million dollar PGA Tour contracts, the magazine shines a massive spotlight on local charity tournaments, military golf events, and regional community heroes up and down the Eastern Seaboard.

A Love for the Land: My background working on my grandparents’ farm in Eastern Tennessee inspired me to launch Turf Life (the magazine’s sister brand). This focus celebrates the actual turf, the agricultural side of the sport, and the golf course superintendents (GCSAA) who wake up at dawn to prepare these beautiful playing fields.

There has been a shift in the Publishing Model. The traditional “print-first” subscription model has transformed entirely. Today, golf publishers survive and thrive on a diversified ecosystem, so we changed too! On line subscriptions are our biggest readership numbers and thanks to hyper links we can add video content to all our social media platforms.

We are essentially the neighborhood general store of golf magazines—professional enough to survive since 1999, but deeply human, community-oriented, and entirely unpretentious.

The Physiological Edge:

Understanding Stress in Golf PTSD awareness is often discussed in clinical terms, but in highperformance environments like golf, it is vital to understand how the nervous system responds under pressure.

Why is it that a golfer can play flawlessly on the range, yet experience a total mechanical breakdown the moment a scorecard is introduced? The answer lies not in their technique, but in how their nervous system interprets the environment. In high-stakes moments, the system often shifts into a sympathetic nervous system threat response (commonly described as fight, flight, or freeze). When the brain interprets the consequence of a shot or a loss of control as danger, attention narrows, movement loses fluidity, and decision-making becomes rigid.

This is not a lack of skill; it is a temporary loss of access to skill.

Golf is uniquely sensitive to this dynamic. Because the sport is slow, self-directed, and hyperevaluative, players often transition from calm rehearsal to execution in seconds. Frequently, this shift occurs without the player noticing the physiological surge that undermines their mechanics.

stress, but to regulate it. Small, physical interventions can restore access to your best game. A slow, intentional exhale before stepping into a shot can downshift arousal, providing a necessary reset.

Pairing this with an external focus cue—such as a specific target or vivid imagery of the intended ball flight—redirects attention away from internal self-monitoring and back toward execution.

True awareness is about viewing performance through a physiological lens. When athletes understand their own stress responses and learn to regulate them, they gain more than just composure; they gain the consistency and precision required to perform. By respecting the biology of the game, players can move past the “threat” and get back to trusting their swing.

This perspective is central to my work in golf performance psychology, where the goal is to help athletes perform more consistently under pressure by improving their ability to regulate attention and physiological arousal.

cart girl Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a very small town. Pellston, Michigan.

Which group of people did you associate most with in high school?

It was such a small school that each class was pretty tight knit. We all got along and considered everybody friends What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part?

I would say there is nothing I don’t enjoy about being a cart girl, I truly love all aspects of the job. Between the animals I get to see and the people I get to meet, it’s just an amazing job to have.

If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t a cart girl I would probably be a homestead farmer. I just love animals and I already have so many.

What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl?

My most memorable moment I have is probably when I saved a snapping turtle from our parking lot, while golfers hyped me up and cheered me on. It was thankfully 14

very friendly and let me pick it up and move it to the pond safely without snapping once.

Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice?

I don’t think I would change anything about the way we can dress. We have so many options we can chose from pants, shorts, skirts and any color polo with The Highlands logo. I couldn’t ask for a better variety of choices.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I am not sure they are considered hobbies, but I have ducks, geese and goats that I love to watch just be animals. I also love spending time with my little family. We love camping, boating and spending maybe too much time at the beach.

What else would you like for us to know about you?

I am 26 years old and have been working for The Highlands since I was 16 years old. I started out working in the Food Market, which I continue to work in every winter. I have four siblings who also work at The Highlands.

Finally, I am a mom/stepmom to two amazing kiddos.

What began as

an idea during a golf course renovation evolved into an opportunity to reimagine retail at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club.

As Oakridge Golf Course underwent its transformation in 2025, the Club chose not to simply reopen another traditional golf shop. Instead, it introduced Oak & Moss, a boutique offering curated Lowcountry fashion, accessories, gifts, and elevated casual apparel designed to complement the Club’s existing golf retail while reflecting the everyday lifestyle of its members.

“We already offered a strong assortment of golf apparel across our other golf shops, but we had seen a great response whenever we introduced a few fashion-forward lifestyle pieces at our Marshwood Golf Shop.

That showed us members were looking for something different,” said Amber Lynch, Golf Retail Director. “The goal was to give our members a reason to shop onisland, complement our existing golf retail offerings, and create a unique shopping experience that felt fresh while still reflecting the lifestyle of our club.”

Oak & Moss’s location has also helped shape its identity. Situated alongside the Oakridge Golf Course, clubhouse, and Wellness Center, the boutique naturally attracts a broader cross-section of the membership. Its proximity to the Wellness Center encourages visits from members who may not have otherwise shopped in one of the Club’s golf shops, creating a lifestyle retail experience that extends beyond the game.

As members became familiar with Oak & Moss, the team shifted its focus beyond retail to creating memorable experiences. Holiday shopping events featuring beverage offerings, permanent jewelry pop-ups, color analysis sessions, and bouquetmaking classes have transformed the boutique into a social gathering place where members can shop, connect, and discover something 16

new. Pop up Oak & Moss shopping experiences are a common sight at major Club events and a variety of golf events throughout the year.

Even as Oak & Moss has expanded its audience, the boutique has remained intentional about serving golfers as well.

“While Oak & Moss is a lifestyle boutique, we still wanted it to resonate with our golfing members.

We carry brands like Collars & Co. and Duck Head that bridge the gap between performance and everyday style, offering polished polos, shorts, and elevated casual pieces,” said Lynch. “Our goal is to provide clothing that’s just as appropriate after a round as it is for dinner at the club— comfortable, versatile, and reflective of the country club lifestyle. It complements our traditional golf shops while giving members more options beyond the course.”

Although I was born in Memphis, I consider Covington, TN to be my hometown. It’s where I learned how to break a horse, graduated high school, and found my love of BBQ! What do you do for a living? I’m currently retired, but made a living in the restaurant industry which is where I found passion for cooking and great food.

Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? I enjoy spending time with my children, cooking on my smoker and watching Gator football.

Steak, chicken, or seafood? While I love them all, I have been known for my time in the steakhouse and I’d like to think I can still cook a steak very well (but preferably not well-done, ha).

Name the three most important things to you in this world. My family, my health, and my friendships.

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? If I could go back in time, I’d Like to play golf with Chi Chi Rodriguez, Frank Sinatra, and Fuzzy Zoellor.

Being the father of my two children, they have both grown up to be happy healthy and successful in their own right and I could wish nothing more for them.

Favorite charity to support? Lewis Family Cancer Fund, not only is the Lewis family near and dear to my heart, the golf tournament and cocktail party is a weekend to be remembered!

Adaptive Open Championship is the USGA’s 15th national championship, spotlighting the world’s best golfers with disabilities and truly giving the adaptive golf community a national stage to compete and pursue their dreams.

For the second straight year at Woodmont Country Club, Kipp Popert, Men’s Overall Champion, and Kim Moore, Women’s overall Champion, dominated the U.S. Adaptive Open Championship, winning by a wide margin and further cementing their status as the event’s defining players through its first five years.

golf bachelorette Where were you born? Did you grow up there?

I was born in Buffalo, New York, but traded snowstorms for sunshine when my family relocated to Florida during my high school years. Moving with my parents and two siblings was a big change, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the Florida lifestyle. Between the warm weather, beaches, and year-round outdoor activities, it quickly felt like home, and I’ve been here ever since.

What do you do for a living?

After 17 years in marketing with a Fortune 100 healthcare company, I decided it was time to pursue a career that aligned more closely with my passions and purpose. Today, I work in the golf industry and own Kona Ice of West Clearwater, combining my entrepreneurial spirit with a strong commitment to community involvement. This new chapter has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to serve others, support local charities, and create memorable experiences that bring joy to people of all ages.

What would you like to do for a living?

I would love to be playing on the LPGA Tour. Golf has always been a true passion of mine since the age of 8, and it’s something I genuinely enjoy both competitively and recreationally.

I admire the dedication and skill it takes to compete at the LPGA level, and I love the idea of being fully immersed in a sport I’m so passionate about.

Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?

Outside of golf, I really enjoy staying active and trying new things. I started playing pickleball a few years ago and absolutely love the competitive side of it. I also enjoy discovering 26

new places, whether it’s trying a new restaurant or exploring somewhere I haven’t been before. For relaxation, I love simple things like watching movies, mini golfing, bowling, biking, a day at the beach and working out at the gym.

How did you start playing golf and at what age?

My grandfather was the person who first introduced me to golf at Elma Meadows Golf Course in Elma, New York. I still remember the first time he took me out on the course, and by the age of eight, I was already asking my parents to sign me up for golf lessons. He always believed in me, encouraged me, and patiently taught me the game, even while trying to enjoy his own round of golf. From that moment on, golf became a major part of my life. I played competitively throughout high school, earned a college golf scholarship, and spent several years working at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Trinity, Florida. During those years, I was on the course nearly every day, either practicing or playing. What I enjoy most about golf is that there is always room for improvement. The game continually challenges me, and I love the opportunity to What achievement are you most proud of?

I published my first children’s book back in 2021. I love reading and writing and I’ve always wanted to publish a children’s book. I’m working on my next book right now, and I’m excited to share it with readers when it’s published.

Tell us about your last Staycation.

I spent a day at Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida and it was such an unforgettable experience. Swimming with dolphins was incredible and something I’ll always remember. I also loved spending time with the flamingos, being able to feed Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 4

them and walk alongside them throughout the park made the experience even more special. It was the perfect day of fun, relaxation, and creating memories I’ll never forget.

Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know.

I’d say one thing only my closest friends really know is that I have a very competitive side when it comes to sports and games! On the surface I’m easygoing, but once I’m in a game of pickleball, golf, or anything competitive, I’m all in and play to win. I think it surprises people sometimes because of my laidback personality, but I love to win!

What are some of your great accomplishments?

Being a great mom, publishing my first children’s book, starting my own business, working my way up the corporate ladder and helping others through community service and in my everyday life. Helping other people makes me feel fulfilled and puts a smile on my face.

Favorite charity to support?

My favorite ‘charities’ to support are really the ones that allow me to give back directly to the local community in a hands-on way. Through my Kona Ice franchise, I love being able to bring a smile to someone’s face and brighten their day. It feels good to be able to show up at community events and support families, schools, and organizations in a simple but meaningful way.

I also have a special place in my heart for organizations like Metropolitan Ministries, where I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer and see firsthand the impact of helping families in need.

a head for Kate Korngold, an accomplished junior golfer in New York. She had just returned from yet another golf retail shop that offered little or no choices in the way of apparel for junior girls So, the 13-year-old decided to do something about it.

She approached her Mom and Dad with the idea of designing her own golf clothes and creating an apparel company that focused on junior girls and women golfers.

A short three years later, Featherie Golf is a flourishing female apparel company that recently completed its third showing in the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando among dozens of other apparel companies. It also was a presenting sponsor at the ING Spring Forum at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club in Savannah earlier this month.

“Featherie started from a frustration I had as a competitive junior golfer-- I couldn’t find apparel that combined high performance with a modern, flattering feel,” said Korngold.

Lakefront Texas Hill Country Destination Enters Its Golden Era For more than 50 years, Horseshoe Bay Resort has been a fixture on Lake LBJ in the Texas Hill Country, roughly 45 minutes from Austin.

With 54 holes of championship golf, a golf academy, water recreation, racquet sports, fine dining, and a lively sports bar, the 7,000-acre property has long offered guests plenty to do. What’s changed is how much attention it’s about to receive — and how sharp its golf product has become.

This August, Golf Channel’s long-running competition series Big Break returns for a season filmed entirely at Horseshoe Bay, in partnership with the popular golf-influencer collective Good Good Golf. The show will spotlight all three of the resort’s Robert

He described the resort as having spent years as a well-kept secret, and expects the show to establish it as a legitimate national golf destination. The season of Big Break X Good Good on Golf Channel is designed to bridge Big Break’s loyal legacy television audience with Good Good’s younger, fast-growing following from YouTube.

The made-for-TV moment didn’t happen by accident. It

grew out of last June’s Good Good Lone Star Shootout, a 12-hole event pairing Good Good creators with celebrity athletes, including Reggie Bush and Matt Ryan, in two-man team competition — part exhibition, part concert. The variety of golf and surrounding amenities reportedly left a strong impression, and comfort between the two sides made the bigger production feel like a natural next step. This season’s Big Break field will include a pair of Good Good members alongside ten additional male competitors, with the winner earning a berth in the Good Good Championship on the PGA Tour, set for this November in nearby Austin.

Apple Rock and Ram Rock underwent substantial renovations in 2018 and 2019 — expanded greens complexes, rebuilt retaining walls, updated cart paths, refreshed fountains, and releveled tee boxes — following similar work on Slick Rock in 2015. The refinements continue: bathroom renovations on Apple Rock and Ram Rock, driving range upgrades, a new cart barn roof at Slick Rock, roughly $100,000 in tree-trimming for turf health, and fresh bunker sand are all underway. Looking further ahead, Slick Rock and Ram Rock are slated for complete irrigation overhauls in 2027, with additional bunker work and tee box leveling; Apple Rock will receive the same treatment four years after that.

Consistency matters as much as individual upgrades. All three resort courses share bentgrass

The resort’s new 3,000-square-foot Golf Academy, led by Director of Instruction Bobby Steiner, features indoor and outdoor lesson bays along with eight covered practice bays equipped with Toptracer Range technology. Beyond clinics and schools, it’s become a hub for member association events, introductory classes for new players, and VIP group experiences — and a persuasive selling point for prospective members touring the property.

The golf isn’t the only thing evolving. Recent additions across this 7,000-acre lakefront oasis include a new dining yacht, an onwater obstacle course, a playground, and the 10,000-square-foot Live Oak Pavilion near the Whitewater Putting Course, adjacent to the resort’s 250room tower hotel — a versatile space suited to everything from award ceremonies to family gatherings.

With talk already circulating about a possible new tour-level championship course and a shorter layout for resort guests, Horseshoe Bay shows no signs of settling into its moment in the spotlight.

Annual Tournament Proves the Greatest Victories Never Appear on the Scorecard The sun rose over Alaqua Golf Club on a picture-perfect Monday morning as golfers gathered for the 9th Annual Legacy Youth Sports Golf Tournament. Under clear blue skies, players made their way to assigned carts before the shotgun start, eager for a day of competition on one of Central Florida’s top tier courses.

Alaqua was in exceptional condition. The fairways were lush, the greens rolled true, and every hole presented golfers with both challenge and reward. As if on cue, nature reminded everyone

that golf in Florida is as much about the surroundings as it is the scorecard. Deer quietly grazed near the tree line, hawks circled overhead, an alligator claimed his usual spot along the water’s edge, and the snake crossing a cart path became another memorable story from the day.

By every measure, it was a successful golf tournament.

Yet, for Legacy Youth Sports founder Ozell Martin, the day’s greatest victories had nothing to do with birdies, pars, or trophies.

“When we started the Legacy Youth Sports Golf Tournament nine years ago, our goal was simple,” Martin reflected. “We wanted to create opportunities for young people who otherwise might not have access to organized sports and positive mentorship.”

That vision has grown far beyond athletics. Today, Legacy Youth Sports develops the whole

child through youth sports, mentorship, educational support, scholarships, and community outreach. While sports remain the foundation, the organization’s mission is to build confidence, character, and opportunity for every child it serves.

Martin says there was never one defining moment that inspired the foundation. Instead, it has been shaped by countless young lives.

“I’ve seen children who lacked confidence become leaders, students improve academically, and families find support during difficult times,” he said. “Watching young people discover their potential reinforced that this work is more than a program, it’s a calling.”

The golfers who filled Alaqua’s fairways may have come for a day on a beautiful golf course, but their participation carries an impact that extends throughout the year. Tournament proceeds provide scholarships, uniforms, equipment, transportation, facility rentals, academic enrichment programs, and community initiatives. The organization also supports families through back-toschool drives, holiday assistance, and programs designed to ensure that financial hardship never prevents a child from participating.

Martin believes organized sports provide lessons that shape lives long after the final whistle.

and resilience,” he said. “Those qualities prepare young people to become successful students, employees, parents, and leaders.

We’re not just developing athletes, we’re developing responsible young men and women.”

“Their support sends a powerful message to young people that they matter,” Martin said. “Every sponsorship, every foursome, and every donation removes barriers

and creates opportunities.”

Perhaps Legacy Youth Sports’ greatest accomplishment isn’t measured by championships but by the young people who return years later as mentors, coaches, and role models for the children following in their footsteps.

Looking toward the future, Martin hopes the organization’s legacy will be defined by lives transformed rather than programs offered.

“If the next generation grows up knowing they are valued, equipped to succeed, and inspired to give back,” he said, “then we’ve accomplished our mission.”

As the final scores were posted and golfers gathered for lunch and awards, it became clear that the day’s greatest success wasn’t recorded on a leaderboard. The true winners were the children whose futures will be shaped by the generosity displayed at Alaqua Golf Club.

Because while every golfer hopes to leave the course with a memorable round, the 9th Annual Legacy Youth Sports Golf Tournament proved that the most meaningful investment isn’t made with a golf swing, it’s made in the life of a child.

Looking Back: My Open Championship Experience From the Early '80's

Like any golf fan, I always enjoy

following the action associated with the sport’s four major tournaments – The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and the (British) Open Championship.

It’s always interesting watching the drama unfold as the world’s golfing heavyweights battle for top honors in the game’s four premier events. To date, the winners of the first three majors are Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (The Masters), England’s Aaron Rai (PGA Championship), and the USA’s Wyndham Clark (U.S. Open). Who will win The Open Championship?

That remains to be seen.

This year, July 16-19 will be very special days for all golfers since the (British) Open Championship will be contested on those four days. This year’s Open is being held at the historic Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.

Based on history, many Americans have won Open Championships at Royal Birkdale. The most recent U.S. winner at Royal Birkdale was Jordan Spieth back in 2017.

Every Open Championship is a very special one for me because I attended the Open 43 years ago when it was held at Royal Birkdale (July 14-17, 1983). As this year’s Open Championship rolls along, I will be reminded of my own Open Championship experience more than 40 years ago.

To attend a major golf tournament is one thing, but to attend an Open Championship is a unique experience. Please join me as I walk down ‘memory lane’…...

The ’83 Open attracted a record number of spectators – more than 140,000 – but that number was broken the following year at St. Andrews.

Like all golf tournaments, it all boils down to what happens on Sunday. The ’83 Open was no different. That Sunday began with four strokes separating the top ten players on the leaderboard. Those ten players, who hailed from four different countries, had won a total Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 4

of 21 major championships, to date.

Australia’s Graham Marsh, nicknamed Swampy, was the biggest story of the day. He started the round at level par -- eight shots off the pace and more than two hours in front of Tom Watson and Craig Stadler, who played in the final group. Marsh played spectacular that day.

By the time he had finished, he was leading the tournament with a fourday total of 277 (sevenunder-par), thanks to a Sunday 64. That score looked tough to beat.

Just as Marsh was leaving the 18th green, the bright, blue skies that had been with us since Thursday’s opening round were giving way to a fresh breeze off the nearby Irish Sea and a dark, grey sky. Would the barrage of Americans – featuring Lee Trevino, Andy Bean, Hale Irwin, Ray Floyd, Fuzzy Zoeller, Watson, and Stadler – fall by the wayside and allow the Australian to win?

Trevino, who started the day three shots behind. He jumped into the lead with an eagle on 13, but could shoot no better than a 70 and finished three strokes behind the eventual winner. South Africa’s Harold Henning, a 48-year-old journeyman with a great short game, started holing putts and climbed to within one shot of the lead, but couldn’t get any closer.

Irwin and Bean both shot 67s and finished one better than Marsh.

Zoeller, Floyd, and Stadler wilted on the final day and weren’t able to mount a charge. But, Watson remained in the mix all day.

In the end, it all boiled down to the final group on the 72nd hole of the Open. Watson stood on the 18th tee at nineunder-par, holding a one-shot lead over Irwin and Bean. Watson faced one of the most difficult finishing holes in golf, a 473-yard dogleg to the right par-four. To make matters worse, there was a swirling wind whipping off the nearby Irish Sea.

A par four would give him a fifth Open crown, a bogey five meant an 18-hole playoff with both Irwin and Bean the following day, and anything worse wasn’t worth contemplating.

With a driver in his hands, Watson split the fairway, but he still had more than 200 yards to the flagstick. His ensuing two iron to the green was struck perfectly, as it landed a few feet from the pin and stopped 15 feet past the hole.

After Watson’s approach shot, controlled pandemonium unfolded before my very eyes, as the 18th green was ringed with people. The final link in the circle came when thousands of fans from both sides of the 18th fairway rushed to form a line across the 18th fairway. The only thing that stopped the fans – and I was one of them – from getting any closer to the green was a line of British police officers who formed a human retaining wall.

When Watson finally made it through the crowd, the spectators gave him an ovation that even gave me goosebumps. What followed was rather academic. He had two putts for the championship, which he converted without trouble.

Watson repeated as the Champion Golfer of the Year – 67, 68, 70, 70; nine-under-par 275. Rather elementary, my dear Watson!

club food and beverage has long included a regular rotation of burgers, hot dogs, club sandwiches, a reliable-yet-uninspired Friday night prime rib, and an operation expected to break even at best.

Enter Ray Whitlock. As the Director of Culinary Experiences at Bobby Jones Links, one of the golf industries leading club management firms, he is stepping entirely out of the traditional golf world and firmly into the modern restaurant arena. Tasked with crafting menus across the company’s diverse portfolio of golf properties, Whitlock treats each club as a standalone culinary destination. “It’s all about the members,” Whitlock says. “When they start seeking elevated dining, we begin running specials.

If we start selling a bunch of steaks, then it’s time to make a (more permanent) change.

So, it’s essentially memberdriven. We really have to know our clients and community.”

Before heating up a single skillet, Whitlock maps out the local dining ecosystem, examining what popular restaurants are doing within a 10-mile radius of the club. The goal isn’t to force-feed fine dining where it doesn’t belong. It’s about meeting members exactly where they are and then raising the bar. If a community won’t support a $45

sea bass or Wagyu steak, Whitlock instead finds creative ways to elevate staples like burgers and hot dogs or utilize alternative cuts like flank steak to keep prices aligned with local expectations.

Live Oaks Golf Club in Jackson, Miss. is undergoing an aesthetic rebranding complete with trendy colors and lux new furniture. To match the fresh vibe, Whitlock deployed what he calls his culinary safety net: a “555 menu” consisting of five appetizers, five salads, and five entrees. By restricting the size of the initial menu, the kitchen can focus strictly on sourcing the highest quality local ingredients. At the club’s standalone restaurant, Roosevelt’s, the menu leans into the area’s rich Southern heritage and local love for seafood, complemented by a homemade chocolate chess pie. To test the waters for future growth, Whitlock will use July to run unlisted steak and scallop

specials. If the members bite, those items earn a permanent spot. If not? The safety net holds, and the menu evolves organically.

When Whitlock seeks inspiration, he looks at successful, high-quality, casual-upscale restaurant concepts. The objective is to merge top-tier restaurant service with the welcoming, familiar atmosphere of a private club. Nowhere is this hybrid model more evident than at Boone’s, located at the Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta. The restaurant boasts a dedicated mixologist and curated plateware and glassware – amenities rarely seen at a standard golf course eatery. Then, there’s the food. Boone’s features a dish that Whitlock admits he still thinks about while driving around: a legendary duck burger featuring Berkwood bacon, blue cheese, smoked blueberries, and whole grain mustard. “A lot of clubs won’t do a duck burger with Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 4

blueberry compote, but it’s one of Boone’s top sellers,” says Whitlock.

This shift from a standard amenity to a legitimate culinary hotspot isn’t just about prestige; it’s about the bottom line. In the modern era, Whitlock believes all avenues must lead to profit, which can then funnel directly back into the club for better kitchen equipment and enhanced facilities.

Every dining experience undergoes Whitlock’s scrutiny. He obsesses over dietary restrictions, lighting, background music, and service styles, deciding whether a venue requires a casual walk-up window or full-blown French service with polished silverware. Even menu typography and materials are fair game, with Whitlock currently favoring a modern landscape layout printed on an innovative, wipeable plastic paper that’s trending in the restaurant industry.

captured titles at the 2026 Srixon South Florida PGA Junior Tour’s fourth major championship of the 2026 season, the South Florida Junior PGA Championship, contested June 22-23 at Stonebridge Country Club. The 36-hole championship featured 75 junior golfers competing across two divisions, with Klein and Koduru emerging as champions.

Boys 13-18 Division Kenny Klein of Palm Beach Gardens opened the championship with a 2-under-par 70, trailing first-round leader Tristan Rhodenizer of Palm Beach Gardens by two strokes. Klein delivered a strong performance in the final round, carding four birdies and fourteen pars to finish at 6-under par and claim his first South Florida PGA Junior Major title.

“It was great to come away 46

with a win, and it felt like I played some really good golf out there today,” said Klein.

Klein also earned a spot in the 2026 National Junior PGA Championship with his victory.

“I’m really excited. This was something I was looking forward to trying to qualify for this year. I’ve never been to Texas, so I’m excited to go there and see the course,” he said.

The victory additionally secured Klein a place in the inaugural Cameron Young– Justin Thomas South Florida PGA Junior Challenge Cup. “When it was first announced, it sounded amazing, and hearing more about it as it gets closer is really exciting. It’s going to be great to see Cam Young and Justin Thomas out there, and from what I hear, it will be an incredible experience,” Klein added.

Girls 13-18 Division In the Girls 13-18 Division, Nirvika Koduru of Boca Raton opened the tournament with an even-par round, sitting one stroke behind first-round leader Jolie Pastorick of Sarasota.

Koduru remained steady throughout the final round, posting a 1-over-par 73 to finish the championship at 1-over par and capture her first South Florida PGA Junior Major title.

The victory adds to an impressive resume that includes fifteen top-10 finishes since joining the South Florida PGA Junior Tour in 2023.

“I was really looking forward to playing here and qualifying.

It was one of my goals this year, and I’m super excited that I made it!” said Koduru.

Koduru’s win also secured her place in the 2026 Junior PGA Championship.

(Nico Escobar), Associate PGA of America Professional at Capital City Club earned his first Georgia PGA Section victory on Tuesday.

Escobar completed a dramatic come from behind victory defeating Director of Instruction at Crystal Lake, Jabir Bilal, PGA, in a three-hole playoff to win the 2026 West Pines Classic at West Pines Golf Club in Douglasville.

Trailing late in the final round, Escobar produced one of the championship’s defining moments, closing with birdie, eagle, birdie over his final three holes to finish at 9-under-par and force a playoff with Bilal. The pair, who played together in the penultimate group, each carded 5-under 66 in the final round before returning to the course for the playoff.

After matching pars through two playoff holes on No. 18, the championship shifted to the par-3 third hole. Escobar carded a bogey 4 to secure the West Pines Classic title.

“I made the birdie putt on 18 and thought I was one short of the playoff, so I didn’t really celebrate because I thought I lost by one,” said Escobar. “I finished great and closed out good, so I just wanted to ride that momentum into the playoff.”

Earlier this month, he finished tied for eighth at the Yamaha Atlanta Open and will carry his momentum into next month’s Georgia Open at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, where he competed throughout his collegiate career at Georgia Southwestern State University before graduating in 2025.

“We have a great role model at Capital City with Francisco Bide playing in the PGA Championship,” Escobar said.

“That’s what we all aspire to do.”

Monday’s opening round belonged to Matt Sanders, PGA, Head Golf Professional at West Pines Golf Club, who carded a 5-under 66 to take a oneshot lead into the final round.

Playing on his home course, Sanders set the early pace before the leaderboard tightened throughout Tuesday’s play.

Among the biggest movers during the final round was Francisco Bide, PGA, Head Golf

Professional at Capital City Club.

After opening with a 1-over 72, Bide fired a tournament-low 7-under 64 to climb into sixth at 6-under-par, finishing three shots behind the playoff. Assistant Golf Professional at West Pines Golf Club, Chad Thomas, PGA, also made an impressive charge with a blistering 6-under 30 on the front nine before ultimately finishing tied for third.

The West Pines Classic is one of six Georgia PGA that award Player of the Year points throughout the season. Those standings help determine eligibility for several of the Section’s premier opportunities, including a berth into the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic and qualification for The Drew, the Georgia PGA’s $50,000 season finale at East Lake Golf Club.

The Georgia PGA extends its appreciation to the City of Douglasville, West Pines Golf Club, Chris Cartwright, PGA, the club staff, volunteers, and all partners who helped make another successful championship possible.

The North Florida PGA Celebration of Members welcomed the NFPGA Hall of Fame Class of 2026 and the 2026 NFPGA Award Winners on May 31st at Evermore Orlando Resort!

On May 31st,

the North Florida PGA held its Celebration of Members at Evermore Orlando Resort. The evening included welcoming three new Hall of Fame inductees: Duke Butler III, PGA, John Hughes, MPGA and Bill Hughes, MPGA. The night also included recognizing the 2026 NFPGA Award Winners for their outstanding accomplishments in the Section.

NFPGA Hall of Fame Class of 2026 Duke Butler III, PGA Duke Butler III has dedicated his life to the advancement of golf through leadership, service, and volunteerism at both the national and local levels.

A former standout at Texas A&M and PGA TOUR professional, Butler served as Executive Director of the Houston Golf Association and Tournament Director of the Houston Open for more than a decade, where he helped elevate one of the TOUR’s premier events while expanding its charitable reach. He later joined the PGA TOUR, rising to Senior Vice President, where he played a key role in tournament operations and contributed to initiatives that generated significant charitable impact across the country.

Since relocating to North Florida, Butler has become a highly influential leader within the regional golf community. As President of the Jacksonville Area Golf Association, he has helped strengthen the organization’s role in promoting and supporting the game at all levels. His leadership has led to the creation and growth of several impactful local initiatives, including junior golf instruction programs, high school competitions, and familyfocused events designed to increase participation and accessibility.

In recognition of his commitment to growing the game, Butler was honored with the PGA of America’s National Junior Golf Leader Award in 1990.

Butler remains deeply engaged at the grassroots level, volunteering his time to mentor junior golfers, support aspiring collegiate players, and provide instruction through community-based programs.

His lifelong commitment to service, player development, and charitable giving continues 50

John Hughes, MPGA John Hughes, PGA Master Professional, and North Florida PGA Past President, has devoted more than 25 years to advancing the game of golf through education, mentorship, and leadership, leaving a lasting impact on the North Florida PGA. One of the Section’s most dedicated volunteer leaders, Hughes has been an impactful leader within the Section, serving in numerous roles at both the Chapter

and Section levels, including longstanding service on the North Florida PGA Board of Directors and leadership roles across education, finance, and governance.

In 2013, he was honored with the PGA of America’s National Professional Development Award, recognizing his contributions to education, mentorship, and the advancement of PGA Professionals.

William (Bill) Hughes, MPGA William (Bill) Hughes, PGA Master Professional, has built a distinguished career in golf operations and club management spanning more than four decades, including a significant and lasting impact within the North Florida PGA Section. After beginning his career as a Head Golf Professional and club owner in Ohio, Hughes joined the PGA TOUR’s TPC Network, where he held leadership positions at several premier facilities nationwide. His tenure culminated with his role as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of TPC Sawgrass, one of the most recognized venues in golf.

During his time at TPC Sawgrass, Hughes oversaw transformative capital projects, including the completion of the clubhouse and extensive renovations to both championship courses, while also directing operations for THE PLAYERS Championship. His leadership helped further establish the facility’s global reputation and reinforced North Florida’s position as a premier destination for the game.

Beyond his operational leadership, Hughes has made meaningful contributions to the Section through mentorship, professional development, and community engagement. He has guided and influenced numerous PGA Professionals throughout his career, while also supporting a wide range of charitable initiatives and local organizations. His continued leadership, most recently serving as General Manager and COO of Glenn Kernan Club in Jacksonville, established the club as one of the nation’s most refined golf and lifestyle communities.

Drive, Chip and Putt Local Qualifiers are a big success thus far in the NFPGA In 2026, the NFPGA will host 12 Drive, Chip and Putt Local Qualifiers, two Subregional Qualifiers, and a Regional Qualifier. The local qualifiers schedule will wrap up in the middle of July. For these events alone, the NFPGA is on track to see approximately 1,500 juniors participate at the local level! The turnout has been tremendous, the Host Professionals have provided a great opportunity for these juniors to compete at a variety of courses, and each facility has created a welcoming atmosphere. The Section had two new local qualifier host sites for 2026: Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, FL and Clearwater Country Club in Clearwater, FL. The Subregional Qualifiers will be hosted at Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate on Saturday, August 8th and at The Conservatory at Hammock Beach on Sunday, August 16th. The Regional Qualifier will be hosted at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday, September 12th. All terrific host sites!

The Science Behind the Playing Surfaces

As the FIFA World Cup 26 comes

to a close on July 19, one story has emerged alongside the tournament’s unforgettable moments: the science behind the natural grass playing surfaces.

In 2021, FIFA selected the University of Tennessee, in collaboration with Michigan State University, to lead a fiveyear research project focused on developing consistent, highperforming natural grass playing surfaces for the tournament’s 16 host stadiums across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

This year’s historic tournament spans three countries, multiple climates and elevations, and a variety of stadium designs (five of the stadiums are domed, while eight others required laying the new field over an artificial surface).

Despite those differences, FIFA’s goal was to provide players with consistent playing experiences from match to match.

Researchers at UT and MSU evaluated every aspect of

natural sports turf performance, including grass selection, rootzone construction, irrigation management, mowing practices, traffic tolerance and athletesurface interactions. Over the course of the collaboration, the teams conducted more than 170 research trials and developed

new testing methods to better understand field performance and player traction.

The research informed FIFA’s recommendations for field construction and management leading up to the tournament and supported preparations for competition at every host venue.

With athlete safety of the utmost importance, the natural surface required testing, but the right machine to do so didn’t exist.

UT’s John Sorochan, distinguished professor of turfgrass science, and

Kyley Dickson, associate director of UT’s Center for Athletic Field Safety, invented the fLEX Device, which mimics the rigors of game play by using a cleat and accurate sensors to ensure that surfaces meet FIFA’s industry standards.

Miami, Mexico City, or Vancouver— they shouldn’t feel any difference underfoot. Likewise, when the ball strikes the surface and reaches them, it should behave consistently.

The findings are expected to influence natural grass management for professional and collegiate sports venues while advancing research on sports field performance, sustainability and athlete safety, leaving a lasting legacy that will benefit millions long after a champion has been crowned and the tournament has concluded.

GCSAA Names Nicole Poell Editor-in-Chief of GCM

Experienced sports journalist will lead GCSAA’s flagship publication Nicole Poell,

an award-winning sports journalist with more than three decades of experience, has been named editor-in-chief of GCM and director of publications for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

In her role, Poell will oversee the writing, editing and overall production of GCSAA’s monthly award-winning publication, including the management of GCM’s digital version and social media properties. She takes over the position from Andrew Hartsock, who is retiring this month.

Prior to GCSAA, Poell was deputy sports editor for USA Today, where she spent eight years. That followed sports editor roles at Fox Sports, the Kansas City Star and the San Jose Mercury-News. She has earned multiple Associated Press Sports Editors awards.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., and studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. “We are extremely fortunate to have such a decorated sports journalist as Nicole join our team,” GCSAA Chief Executive Officer Rhett Evans said. “Her knowledge and experience will enhance GCM, which is such a trusted and crucial source of information for the golf course management industry.”

Poell began her position on July 6.

“I’m so honored to join the respected GCSAA team, and I look forward to meeting our members whenever possible,” Poell said.

Poell’s team includes veteran GCSAA staff members Phil Cauthon, managing editor; Howard Richman, associate editor; Darell Pehr, science editor; Abby Olcese, GCMOnline editor; and Roger Billings, senior manager, creative services.

GCSAA announces winners of 2026 Legacy Awards Scholarship program assists children and grandchildren of association members The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has awarded 20 college scholarships as part of its Legacy Awards program. To be eligible, applicants must be a child or grandchild of a GCSAA member. Each grant is for $1,500 and is funded by the GCSAA Foundation.

“GCSAA remains steadfast in its mission to serve our members, in this case, by providing financial assistance to association family members seeking to further their education. We congratulate the latest GCSAA Legacy Award winners and wish them well in their academic pursuits,” said GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans.

The awards are based on academic achievement, community involvement, extracurricular activities and leadership skills.

Applicants must be enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning, or for high school seniors, accepted at such an institution for the next academic year.

Erin Wilder Awarded the FTGA Wreath of Grass The Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) has announced that Erin Boyd Wilder will be honored with the FTGA Wreath of Grass award.

Distributed annually since 1960, this award is FTGA’s highest honor and recognizes individuals who have shown outstanding service to the association and the turfgrass industry. The award will be presented at the Annual Florida Turfgrass Conference on October 7, 2026, during the Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

Erin is from a sixth-generation farming family in north Florida.

She graduated from Florida State University, and after graduation, she returned to Boyd Sod Farm as the Marketing Representative from 2003-2006. For two decades she has worked for Sod Solutions; she has served on many industry boards, and graduated from Wedgworth Leadership Institute for Agriculture and Natural Resources Class VII. “Erin's career in the Florida turf industry has always been marked by a genuine desire to help others and the determination to use her abilities for the good of the industry.

Her remarkable career, along with her remarkable character, made her a natural choice for the Wreath of Grass,” says Betsy McGill, former Turfgrass Producers of Florida executive director.

She has always stepped up when we needed representation, especially when it was needed at the split of a moment. A Turf _Pirate's_ Journal $ Milestones $ Winning the GCSAA President's Award For Environmental Stewardship

Greetings Turf Pirates

and welcome to the mid-summer edition of A Turf Pirate’s Journal.

I hope the weather in your area has not been too hot and that timely rain events have found your course. If you are a faithful reader of our column then you know that we are in the final stages of building a new shop at the River House that will among other things be the Galactic headquarters for the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirate’s and very soon we will send out some photos of the project. However, it was determined that no photos should be released until the new lawns have been sodded (Tahoma Bermuda) and that those Turf Life pictures should by Legacy be the first out. The sod is scheduled in two weeks so be patient Turf Pirates the wait is almost over. It seems appropriate to say, “Green Side Up” as we prep for the sod.

That said, I have been unpacking a few things and drifting down memory lane and found a few milestone moments that I wanted to share with you, so I guess this month’s spin is a throw-back Thursday sort of spin. Let’s go back to San Diego 2010 and the GCSAA Conference and Show.

This was a big week for the team and I as we were awarded GCSAA’s highest environmental honor, The President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship. The picture this month is of the award presentation with me and GCSAA President in 2010 Mark Khuns, the angle is awesome capturing the stage and the media photographer also taking a photo. That moment was a lifetime in the making with many wins and challenges along the way. It is the example I often use to define LINKED goals when I 58

teach goal setting. Now that I am in the later part of my career, I see these photos and mementos in a deeper and more defining way. I am grateful and blessed to have had the career I have had and work with the amazing people that have helped me along the way. The call out this month Turf Pirate’s is this, make sure that you dream big and never let the size of your budget limit your aspirations.

Fill your days with guided effort chasing the best and biggest our industry has to offer and be sure to celebrate the wins and jump over the setbacks. There will come a day when there is more life behind you than there is in front of you and as Turf Pirates one of our guiding principles is to have, “No Regrets.”

Choose your way carefully but boldly as the best part of life is our ability to truly live. Make the most of this summer and the balance of

2026 Turf Pirates because you are worth it! I have a few dozen more boxes of stuff to go through as we move into the new office so I am sure that we will find a few rare moments of Turf Pirate lore. It has also been great to have so many of my former interns, Assistants and superintendents stop by and lend a hand on the project. THANK YOU ALL. To answer a quick Appalachian Trivia question yes, the porch ceilings at the new shop are painted hant-blue. IYKYK. I wanted to make sure we sent a huge thank you to Terrie and Shannon the First Ladies of Golf Central Magazine for giving us a chance to tell these tales and so many others.
