Presentation of the book Dogs and cats represent the exception among the animal kingdom. They are our number one house pets, and have become so important in developed countries that they are considered core members of the family. They live with us in exchange for affection. The benefits from this symbiosis to pet owners’ health have been described in literature.

Therefore, the longevity of the pets’ lives directly benefits the lives of their “guardians”.

In the middle of the 19th century, the first commercial foods for pets were developed.

Currently, estimates show that there are more than one thousand two hundred manufacturers of pet food around the world. Feeding these two species (cats and dogs) is unique within animal nutrition. Their nutrition needs have not been established according to any productive criteria, however, they have been based on the prevention and improvement of the quality of their lives, from the very first stages. In fact, specific foods are available for the treatment of certain pathologies. The nutrition of these two species integrates science and clinical practice. These circumstances have led to greater wellbeing and increased life expectancy of our small animal friends. This way, we close the circle.

In veterinary medicine, we are not used to understanding the importance of nutrition in the health of the patient. But, unlike humans, our patients accept our recommendations, more or less enthusiastically, and the results are usually satisfactory. However, most veterinarians that work with dogs and cats are not especially interested in nutrition.

There is abundant literature on nutrition and feeding, biochemistry, physiology, and veterinary anatomy regarding pets. We have tried, with the most recent information available, to create a book that is easy to use and that can serve as a tool for daily clinical practice. For this reason, all recommendations should be taken into account at this moment as the science of nutrition continues to advance.

I have been lucky enough to share my life with a small four-legged, whisker-baring family and learn from them. I believe I owe them a lot. This is my small contribution to the endless hours of gratuitous love that they have given me.

We hope and desire that this book will help to stimulate veterinarians’ interest in this area of knowledge.
