avier Montes teve a sorte de nascer numa cidade que o inspira. O escritor, foi escolhido, em 2010, pela Granta, uma das mais prestigiadas revistas literárias do mundo, como um dos melhores jovens escritores de lingua espanhola. Atualmente, trabalha numa biografia da escritora e naturista brasileira Luz del Fuego. Javier Montes conta-nos, na primeira pessoa, porque, apesar de ter morado e visitado diversas cidades que lhe trouxeram tanta aprendizagem, o seu coração permanece madrileño.

avier Montes was lucky enough to have been born in a city that inspires him. In 2010, this writer, was chosen by Granta, one of the most prestigious literary magazines in the world, as one of the twenty best young Spanish language authors. He is currently working on a biography of the Brazilian writer and naturist Luz del Fuego. Javier Montes tells us, in person, that despite having visited and lived in several cities where he learnt so much, his heart remains madrileño.

DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE

Eu sou uma pessoa bastante matutina. Tudo começa depois de um primeiro café, indispensável. Se estou no processo de escrita de um livro, escrevo durante toda a manhã, até ao almoço tardio em casa - não gosto nem de almoçar com amigos, nem a “trabalho”. Em Espanha, isso quer dizer que às seis da tarde ainda estás à mesa e ligeiramente bêbado. As tardes são para as funções menos trabalhosas, como artigos, correspondências, palestras, apresentações ou amigos. Em Madrid, como disse um escritor um pouco esquecido do século passado, “às sete da tarde ou dás uma palestra ou te dão uma a ti”. À noite, gosto muito de ir ao cinema, jantar e encontrar os meus amigos, sempre que posso ou podem.

Nos fins de semana, saio para a noite e vou com tudo, mas tenho feito isso cada vez menos.

I’m quite a morning person. It all starts after the indispensable first coffee. If I’m in the process of writing a book, I write all morning until I have a late lunch at home - I don’t like having lunch with friends or “work” lunches. In Spain, this usually means that you end up sitting at table and slightly drunk, at six in the afternoon.

Afternoons are for less laborious activities such as writing articles, correspondence, lectures, presentations or seeing friends. In Madrid, as a somewhat forgotten writer from the last century put it, “at seven o’clock in the afternoon either you give a lecture or you’ll be given one.” At night, I really enjoy going to the cinema, going out to dinner and meeting up with friends whenever we can. On weekends, I go out partying and I’m up for anything although I have been doing that less and less nowadays.

O QUE TE INSPIRA?

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Histórias que me contam por aí, notícias diferentes em jornais, personagens que eu descubro em viagens ou leituras e sobre as quais gosto de imaginar desenvolvimentos possíveis ou resultados improváveis. As ideias amadurecem muito tempo na minha cabeça, quase sem perceber, até depois de anos de aprimoramento, torna-se quase inevitável escrever sobre elas. Agora, por exemplo, termino um livro sobre a formidável “guerrilha urbana” e a pioneira feminista Luz del Fuego, que escandalizou o Brasil nos anos cinquenta e sobre quem ouvi falar casualmente enquanto vivia no Rio, há alguns anos.

Stories people tell me, unusual newspaper articles, characters I discover on trips or who I read about and about which I like to imagine possible developments or improbable results.

Ideas take a while to mature in my mind, almost without realizing it, until years later, after perfecting them, it becomes almost inevitable to write about them. Now, for example, I’m finishing a book about the formidable “urban guerrilla” and pioneer feminist, Luz del Fuego, who scandalized Brazil in the 1950s and whom I heard being casually discussed when I lived in Rio some years ago.

ESPAÇO PREFERIDO PARA ESCREVER?

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE RITUAL OR PLACE WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING?

Trabalho bem em casa, em geral. Eu sou um procrastinador patológico (a palavra perfeita para não dizer preguiçoso por natureza) e nos momentos de maior esforço, às vezes, mudo de lugar para mudar de ideia, vou às bibliotecas ou para uma pequena casa no campo, em Soria, uma imensa província, bela e próxima de Madrid, que é o grande desconhecido do que hoje chamam de “La España Vacía”. Lá, eu encontro o silêncio e a concentração que Madrid às vezes me dificulta.

In general, I work well at home. I am a pathological procrastinator (the perfect way to avoid saying lazy by nature) and in times of greater effort, I sometimes change places to change my mind, I go to libraries or to a small house in the countryside, in Soria, a huge beautiful province close to Madrid, which is the great unknown and what is today known as “The Empty Spain”. There I find the silence and concentration I need that sometimes Madrid makes difficult.

QUEM FOI A SUA PRIMEIRA FONTE DE INSPIRAÇÃO?

WHO WAS YOUR FIRST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?

QUAL A VIAGEM QUE MAIS TRANSFORMOU A SUA PERCEÇÃO DE MUNDO? São duas: a minha primeira estadia solitária e independente, com pouco dinheiro e muita fome (em todos os sentidos) como estudante de Erasmus, aos 20 anos, em Paris (os espanhóis, como bons latinos, levam séculos para se tornarem independentes das suas famílias). E aos 25, um ano que trabalhei como professor em Malabo, na Guiné Equatorial. Isso foi um banho de realidade e uma abertura para o vasto mundo, inesquecível.

Like 99% of the writers I know, I began as a voracious reader without any criteria and as a teenager I copied vilely and imitated, without much originality, the writers I admired (many of my greatest influences were and continue to be, female writers). Reading is always the greatest source of encouragement and inspiration for me. I do not separate what I read about from what is conventionally called “real life,” which is often more unreal and absurd than any moment of happiness that can be found in reading.

WHICH JOURNEY TRANSFORMED YOUR PERCEPTION OF THE WORLD MOST? There are two of them: my first trip alone and totally independently, with little money and very hungry (in all senses), as an Erasmus student, at the age of 20 in Paris (Spaniards, like all good Latinos, take centuries to become independent from their families). Then at the age of 25, when I worked as a teacher in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. This was a real eyeopener to the vast world, unforgettable.

Como 99% dos escritores que conheço, comecei como um leitor voraz sem qualquer critério e em adolescente copiei vilmente e imitei sem muita originalidade os escritores e escritoras que eu admirava (muitas das minhas grandes influências são e foram escritoras mulheres). A leitura é sempre a maior fonte de encorajamento e inspiração para mim. Não distingo entre uma vida de leitura e o que se convencionou chamar “vida real”, que muitas vezes é mais irreal e absurda que qualquer momento de felicidade que a leitura aporta.

Gosto de viajar, mas acima de tudo gosto de “viver” fora do meu país. Passei longos períodos em Lisboa, no Rio, em Itália e em Buenos Aires, com casa própria, com amigos e novas rotinas. Eu gosto do processo gradual de imersão noutras culturas, quando a pouco e pouco aprendo, juntamente com a nova linguagem, os novos códigos, as nuances sociais e culturais mais subtis, que um viajante apressado nem sequer consegue adivinhar.

WHAT DOES TRAVELLING MEAN TO YOU? I like travelling but above all I like to “live” outside my country. I spent long periods of time in Lisbon, Rio, Italy and Buenos Aires, with my own house, with friends and new routines. I like the gradual process of immersion into other cultures, as I slowly learn not just a new language but new codes, the subtler social and cultural nuances that a hurried traveller cannot even imagine.

DE TODOS OS LUGARES NO MUNDO, ONDE SE SENTE MAIS EM CASA? Sempre disse que se tivesse que emigrar ou exilar-me (e para um espanhol, como demonstra a azeda história do país, presente e passada, essa possibilidade está sempre próxima, ainda que seja no inconsciente. Um espanhol tem sempre mentalmente as malas feitas) só poderia sobreviver em três esferas socioculturais: Portugal, Itália ou a imensa América Latina.

Eu já vivi nas três e acho que poderia ser razoavelmente feliz em qualquer uma delas. Numa cultura anglo-saxónica, por exemplo, depois de um ano ou dois, eu pararia de comer e iria definhar e morrer como uma planta mal regada ou uma princesa triste e "brega".

OF ALL THE PLACES IN THE WORLD, WHERE DO YOU FEEL MOST AT HOME? I have always said that if I had to emigrate or become an exile (and for a Spaniard, as the present and history of the country has shown, this is always a real possibility even if it is an unconscious one). I could only survive in three similar socio-cultural spheres: Portugal, Italy or the vast Latin America. I’ve lived in all three and I think I could be reasonably happy in any of them. After a year or two in an Anglo-Saxon culture, for example, I would stop eating and would fade away and die like a poorly watered plant or a sad and tacky princess.

PORQUE ESCOLHEU MADRID PARA VIVER?

Madrid é que me escolheu, por conta do evento puramente aleatório do meu nascimento. Fisicamente, é uma cidade que te deixa fazer a fotossíntese com luz solar abundante, durante 80% do ano. Tem um clima invejável (salvo em julho) e um tamanho fácil de manejar; é fácil ir aos lugares, ver coisas e improvisar encontros com os amigos. Moralmente, Madrid deixa respirar, é uma cidade descomprometida, largada, algo punk, inclusive, que não se esforça por parecer amável, tampouco é snobe, e que não exige grandes testemunhos de adesão, grandes devoções, que não pergunta de onde vens. Essa indiferença geral para mim é fundamental. Nenhum de nós é de Madrid, quase não conheço ninguém que não seja "madrileño" de segunda ou terceira geração. Ninguém daria a vida por Madrid. Creio que nos limitamos a usá-la como melhor nos convém, sem grandes ilusões nem paixões perigosas e pesadas para o forasteiro. O equilíbrio entre o que te oferece e o que te exige é muito razoável, à diferença de grandes cidades com um mapa impossível ou devoradoras como Londres, Paris, Nova York, São Paulo, Hong Kong ou Berlim.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE IN MADRID? Madrid chose me due to the purely random event of my birth. Physically, it’s a city that allows you to photosynthesize in abundant sunlight for 80% of the year. It has an enviable climate (except in July) and is a manageable size; it’s easy to get around, see different things and improvise get togethers with friends.

Morally, Madrid lets one breathe, it is a city that is cool, relaxed and even somewhat punk, making no effort whatsoever to be polite, yet it is not snobby either, never demanding great approval or devotion, neither asking where you are from. This general indifference is fundamental for me. None of us are from Madrid, I hardly know anyone who is not second or third generation "madrileño". No one would give their life for Madrid. I think we just limit ourselves to using it to best suit our needs, without any great illusions or dangerous and heavy passions for an outsider. There’s a good balance between what if has to offer and what it demands of you, unlike other big cities, with an impossible map, that devour us, like London, Paris, New York, São Paulo, Hong Kong or Berlin.

Bem no coração de Madrid, na mais icónica praça da capital espanhola, acaba de inaugurar o Pestana Plaza Mayor Madrid. Este hotel de luxo resulta da reconversão de dois edifícios históricos, onde no passado funcionou o depósito geral de carne, que alimentava os mercados locais, daí serem chamados, até hoje, a Casa de la Carnicería. Toda a traça original dos edifícios do século XVII foi mantida, integrando apenas alguns apontamentos contemporâneos.

A decoração pretende ser uma homenagem à memória do edifício, aliando elementos decorativos de traço imperial com peças coloridas inspiradas nos pintores expressionistas, padrões e cores da praça e de Madrid, integrando ainda linhas contemporâneas que relembram as origens portuguesas do grupo, quer através dos painéis de azulejos, quer através da calçada.

The Pestana Plaza Mayor has just been inaugurated, right in the heart of Madrid, in the most iconic square of the Spanish capital. This luxury hotel results from the reconversion of two historic buildings, which were previously a general facility from which meat was supplied to the general stockpile of meat that fed the local markets, hence the name “Casa de la Carnicería” (Slaughter House).

The original 17th century layout of the buildings has been entirely maintained, with the addition of just a few contemporary touches. eza a lenda que havia uma princesa que morava num castelo de pedra tão grande e tão lindo que ninguém lhe ficava indiferente.

Os habitantes da região vinham de propósito para admirar tão belo castelo e a sua princesa.

Era uma rapariga encantadora, de faces rosadas, olhos claros e de longos cabelos loiros com duas tranças. Mas a princesa era tímida e sempre que pressentia alguém escondia-se. Mas um dia, a princesa apaixonou-se por um rapaz, que vivia no outro lado do rio, e vinha à janela para o ver.

O jovem rapaz, também ele apaixonado, sempre que a via à janela ficava tão contente que gritava para que todos o ouvissem: “Vi a Ana! Vi a Ana do Castelo!”. Tantas vezes o jovem apaixonado repetiu a frase que passaram a chamar “Viana do Castelo” à cidade onde a princesa morava.

Para ver Viana subimos ao topo do Monte de Santa Luzia e entramos na Pousada Viana do Castelo, distinguida este ano com o prémio “Best Pousada” dos Pestana Awards. Não podemos garantir que veja a bela princesa Ana, mas é certo que se vai deslumbrar com esta cidade minhota que encanta a cada recanto. Até os nomes maiores das literatura se rendem aos seus encantos. Foi o caso de José Saramago, vencedor do Nobel da Literatura, que não resistiu a bordar para a memória um texto, que retrata o que sentiu ao alojar-se na Pousada Viana do Castelo.

egend has it that there was once a princess who lived in a stone castle so large and beautiful that no one was indifferent to it. Locals would come specifically to admire the beautiful castle and its princess. She was a lovely girl with rosy cheeks, pale eyes and long blond hair in two plaits. The princess, however, was timid and whenever she sensed somebody near her, she would hide. Then one day, she fell in love with a boy who lived on the other side of the river who she would watch from her window.

Whenever the young man, who was also in love with her, saw her at the window he would joyfully shout “Ví a Ana! Ví a Ana do Castelo” (“I saw Ana! I saw Ana from the Castle!").The enamoured young man would repeat this so often that the city where the princess lived was named "Viana do Castelo".

We cannot guarantee you’ll see Ana, the beautiful princess, but you are sure to be dazzled by the “Minhota” town where every nook and cranny is quite simply, enchanting.

Inaugurada em 1921, a Pousada nasceu da remodelação do antigo Hotel de Santa Luzia, desenhado por Miguel Ventura, autor do Templo de Santa Luzia. Talvez receie, também, uma decepção, a luz entra pelas frinchas, coada e aqui se aperta o coração do viajante: Estará nevoeiro? Salta da cama indignado com a simples ideia da miserável desfeita que seria ver coberta de nevoeiro a paisagem de Santa Luzia, e num repente abre a primeira janela, a que dá para o mar, e fica iluminado de gosto e de pasmo diante do esplendor das águas, a costa brumosa, o encontro do rio e do oceano, o cordão de espuma das vagas que vêm do largo e se desfazem na praia. A outra janela faz ângulo reto com essa, o quarto á de esquina, vida e boa sina, há mais paisagem a espera. E para esta não vão chegar palavras, nem pinturas, nem música. Sobre o largo vale do Lima paira uma névoa luminosa que o sol faz reverberar por dentro como um esplendor.

A água do rio, correndo, cinge as múltiplas ilhas e nessa margem direita, que melhor se distingue do alto, há braços líquidos que entram pela terra e refletem o céu, e campos verdes cortados por altas árvores ruivas e sebes escuras. Das chaminés das casas sobe o fumo matinal, e muito ao fundo, por essa vez contribuindo para a geral beleza da hora magnífica, fumegam em glória as chaminés das fábricas. O viajante tem muita sorte: duas janelas para o mundo e este momento de luz única, a frescura do ar que envolve o corpo. Em boa hora veio a Viana do Castelo, em boa hora chegou estando a noite fechada e resolveu subir ao Monte Santa Luzia para dormir.”

It´s a bright morning but the traveller still hasn´t got out of bed. He´s delaying the moment when he´ll draw the curtains on the two windows in his room. He´s postponing the end of a pleasure he has had since arriving at the hotel in the depths of darkness. Perhaps he also fears a degree of disappointment. Light filters through the chinks and the traveller feels a weight on his heart: “Perhaps it´s cloudy…?” He leaps out of bed, indignant at the mere prospect of how depressing it would be to see the countryside around Santa Luzia blanketed in clouds, and reveals the first window, overlooking the sea, with a single swish. The cold morning air hits him full in the face and he feels radiant with pleasure and surprise at the watery splendours of the misty coast, a meeting point for river and sea in a single cordon of spray from waves crashing in from the high seas onto the beaches.

The other window is at right-angles to the first, the room has many corners, and - oh fine and splendid destiny - there´s more countryside out there waiting. Words don´t suffice to describe it nor paintings, nor music...

A luminous mist suspended over the Valley, the sun resplendent within it like a convector. The river, encircling numerous islands, flowing now towards the right bank, is easily distinguished from above, its liquid arms pushing into the earthy heartland and reflecting back the sky, between green fields bisected by coppery trees and dark verges. The morning smoke rises from house chimneys and greatly enhances the general beauty of a magnificent hour, against the gloriously smoky factory chimneys.

The traveller is a lucky man: two windows on the world at a unique moment of light, the fresh air embracing his body. He clearly came to Viana do Castelo at the right moment, arriving as night drew in, and deciding to climb the mountain of Santa Luzia for a good night´s sleep.

Os artificies em Portugal destacaram-se pela perícia com que assimilaram esta arte, que consegue transformar um simples grama de ouro em cerca de mil metros de fio, que em seguida é delicadamente enrolado, entrelaçado e soldado, desenhando incríveis obras de joalharia. Há provas de que já no século VII os artífices em Portugal usavam esta técnica, que acabaria por se tornar em imagem de marca de Viana do Castelo. Cada uma das peças de filigrana está cheia de significado e representa sobretudo a natureza e a religião. O mar é representado por peixes, conchas, ondas e barcos. A natureza aparece na forma de flores, dos trevos e grinaldas. Nos motivos religiosos, encontramos as cruzes e os relicários.

O famoso coração de Viana, ao contrário do que se pensa, não é um símbolo do amor, mas um culto ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus. Foi a rainha D. Maria I que, grata pela “bênção” de lhe ter sido concedido um filho varão, mandou fazer um coração em ouro. Com o passar do tempo, o coração acabou por ficar relacionado com o amor. Tornou-se tão popular que as cornucópias e as linhas do Coração de Viana começaram a ser reproduzidas em lenços e bordadas em todo o tipo de tecidos. Tão famosos como o coração de Viana são os brincos rainha, que surgiram no reinado da Rainha Dona Maria I, mas viriam a ficar famosos um século mais tarde, quando a Rainha Dona Maria II os usou numa visita a Viana do Castelo.

Símbolo de riqueza e status social, os brincos rainha representam a fertilidade feminina, um círculo mais pequeno ligado à peça principal, de forma aparentemente frágil, simboliza a ligação do filho ao ventre da mãe, do qual se irá libertar. Entre as peças mais conhecidas há ainda as arrecadas, os brincos das classes mais humildes, e os colares de contas. As contas de Viana descendem das contas gregas, são ocas por dentro, o que as torna leves, e perfeitamente esféricas. Distinguem-se, no entanto, pelo fio em filigrana e por um pequeno ponto ao centro. Surgiram pela dificuldade em comprar um colar inteiro em filigrana, assim as mulheres iam comprando conta a conta até conseguir fazer um fio inteiro.

Artisans in Portugal were renowned for the skill with which they assimilated this art that is capable of transforming a simple gram of gold into about one thousand metres of thread that is then delicately rolled, intertwined and soldered into incredibly designed pieces of jewellery.

There is evidence that, as far back as the 7th century, artisans in Portugal were already using this technique, which would eventually become Viana do Castelo’s brand image. Each filigree piece is full of symbols representing, above all, nature and religion. The sea is represented by fish, shells, waves and boats. Nature appears in the form of flowers, clovers and garlands. Religious motifs include crosses and reliquaries.

Contrary to popular belief, the famous Viana heart is not a symbol of love, but of a Sacred Heart of Jesus cult. It was D. Maria I, grateful for having been blessed with the birth of her son, who ordered the heart of gold. Over time, the heart eventually became related to love. It became so popular that the cornucopias and lines of the Viana heart started being reproduced on scarves and embroidered on all type of fabrics. Just as famous as the Viana heart are the Queen earrings, which first appeared during the reign of Queen Dona Maria I but didn’t become famous until a century later when Queen Dona Maria II wore them during a visit to Viana do Castelo. A symbol of wealth and social status, the Queen earrings represent female fertility. A small circle attached to the main piece, in an apparently fragile way, symbolizes the attachment of the child to the mother’s womb, from which it will break free. Among the most well-known pieces are the “Arrecadas”, the earrings of the lower classes, and the beaded necklaces. Viana's beads, which descended from Greek beads, are hollow, making them lighter and perfectly spherical. They can be recognised by the filigree thread and the small dot in the centre. They came about as it was difficult to buy a complete filigree necklace so women would buy the beads one by one until they made up a complete string.

Para ajudar a entender melhor a riqueza desta arte abriu, em 2007, o Museu da Ourivesaria Tradicional Portuguesa, que passado pouco tempo foi alvo de um furto que levou ao desaparecimento de grande parte do valioso espólio de 800 peças antigas. A Ourivesaria Freitas, responsável pela criação do museu, não baixou os braços e, apesar da enorme perda, reabriu o museu em 2008. A par do ouro também a riqueza dos trajes típicos de Viana vale uma visita a outro museu. Situado em pleno centro histórico da cidade, o edifício do antigo Banco de Portugal, alberga, desde 2004, o Museu do Traje que dá a conhecer a riqueza etnográfica dos trajes vianenses. O espólio exposto inclui utensílios utilizados na confeção artesanal de peças de vestuário.

Além da exposição permanente “A lã e o linho no traje do Alto Minho”, o Museu do Traje realiza inúmeras exposições temporárias tendo como tema o traje e etnografia Vianenses. Aproveitando a passagem pelo centro histórico, descubra a Igreja Matriz medieval, os Antigos Paços do Concelho, a quinhentista Casa da Misericórdia e o Chafariz do mesmo século. As ruas e ruelas do centro histórico, um dos mais belos e bem conservados do país, chamam a atenção pelas belas fachadas armoriadas e pelos preciosos painéis de azulejos. Para os apaixonados por azulejaria é imperativa uma passagem pelo Museu de Artes Decorativas, que alberga um espólio único de azulejos portugueses e hispano-árabes. Instalado numa distinta mansão senhorial do século XVIII, o Museu Municipal de Viana do Castelo possui uma das mais importantes e valiosas coleções de faiança antiga portuguesa dos séc. XVII a XIX, que inclui diversas peças da famosa Fábrica de Louça de Viana. Para além de um importante acervo de pintura, desenho e peças de arte sacra, destaca-se a bela coleção de mobiliário indo- português do século XVIII.

The collection includes the utensils used in the handmade confection of garments. In addition to the "Wool and Linen in the Alto Minho Costume" permanent exhibition, the Costume Museum features numerous temporary exhibitions on the theme of typical “Vianense” costumes and ethnography.

Whilst you are in the historic centre, discover the medieval Mother Church, the Old Town Hall, the 16th century “Casa da Misericórdia” and the fountain built in the same century. The streets and alleyways of the historic centre, one of the most beautiful and well preserved in Portugal, are striking thanks to the beautiful armoured facades and the precious tiled panels. For tile lovers, a visit to the Museum of Decorative Arts, which houses a unique collection of Portuguese and HispanoArab tiles, is imperative. Installed in a distinguished 18th century manor house, the Municipal Museum of Viana do Castelo has one of the most important and valuable collections of ancient Portuguese faience dated from the 17th to the 19th century which includes several pieces from the famous “Fábrica de Louça de Viana”.

In addition to an important collection of paintings, drawings and sacred art pieces, the beautiful collection of 18th century Indo-Portuguese furniture, stands out.

Aos 62 anos, Laurinda Figueiras continua apaixonada pela terra que a viu nascer.

Apesar de se ter reformado da carreira como professora, continua a ocupar o seu tempo com inúmeras atividades para levar mais longe a cultura de Viana do Castelo. Além de presidir o Centro Social e Cultural Meabela, lidera o grupo folclórico Ronda Típica da Meabela e é presidente da Casa do Povo. Dizem que o gosto não se discute e quando se conhece uma pessoa como a Marina Saldanha, percebe-se que realmente não se discute, bom gosto é bom gosto! Sem dúvida é cultura, é um sentido estético que corre nas veias e a Marina tinha, com certeza, entre tantas outras, essas duas qualidades bem apuradas. Era uma apaixonada pela fotografia, pela vida e pelas viagens. Sem nunca se ter apresentado como maravilhosa fotógrafa que era, deixou com certeza milhares de belas imagens que captou ao longo da sua vida, em cartões por descarregar...

Para Marina a prioridade sempre foi viver, apreciar e inspirar quem estava perto. Tivemos a sorte e a honra de nos ter acompanhado e contribuído com o seu olhar em muitas das nossas viagens, aqui fica a homenagem a esta inesquecível personalidade que nos acompanhará para sempre, nas nossas lembranças, no nosso espírito e no nosso gosto. It is when you get to know someone like Marina Saldanha that you fully understand the meaning of this Latin maxim and realise that there really is nothing to dispute, good taste is good taste! It is, without any doubt, an innate sense of aesthetics that runs in the veins and which Marina undoubtedly had, as well as countless other qualities. She was passionate about photography, life and travelling. Without ever having revealed her talent by showing her striking photography work, she is sure to have left us thousands of the beautiful images she captured throughout her life, in cards yet to be downloaded. Marina’s priority was always to live, love and inspire all those who were close to her. We were honoured and fortunate enough to have had Marina accompany us and contribute, with her keen eye, on many of our trips.
