Com a chegada do calor e a expectativa das férias há que selecionar destinos e traçar a rota para um merecido descanso. A escolha não é fácil, por isso permita-nos uma ajuda. A WINK que tem em mãos revela as novidades do mundo Pestana e recomenda alguns destinos antes de fazer as malas.

Para os aventureiros e amantes da vida selvagem, a nossa sugestão é o “rei” dos parques nacionais da África do Sul. Falamos obviamente do Kruger National Park. Este santuário de vida selvagem, com mais de 19 mil quilómetros quadrados e onde vivem mais de 800 espécies de animais é para muitos a viagem da sua vida. Não é de estranhar. É um dos sítios do mundo com maior probabilidade de encontrar os “ Big 5”, o elefante, rinoceronte, búfalo, leão e leopardo. Criado há mais de um século, este parque é uma homenagem à natureza e um exemplo a conhecer, numa altura em que o risco de extinção de espécies nos faz repensar a forma como lidamos com o planeta. With the arrival of the warm weather and holiday expectations, it’s time to choose destinations and plan the journey for a well-deserved break.

The choice is not easy, so let us help. This edition of WINK brings you news on the Pestana world and recommends some destinations before you start packing.

For the adventurers and wildlife lovers, our recommendation is the “king” of the National Parks of South Africa. We speak, obviously, of the Kruger National Park. This wildlife sanctuary, with an area of more than 19,000 square kilometres and home to more than 800 animal species, is for many, the trip of a lifetime. It’s not surprising. It is one of the places in the world where you are most likely to encounter the “Big 5”, the elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard.

Created over a century ago, this park is a tribute to nature and an example to get to know, at a time when the risk of the extinction of species makes us rethink the way we deal with our planet. For the sake of convenience and being in close contact with nature, just a few meters from the Kruger National Park, is the Pestana Kruger Lodge, a Safari Resort where you will have all the support you need to organize your walks through the park as well as a set of facilities to take care of yourself.

For the more urban travellers, this edition of WINK takes you to Amsterdam. Among the countless other reasons to return to the Dutch capital, now there’s the Pestana Amsterdam Riverside & National Monument which opened in early 2018. This five-star unit was one of the city’s historic buildings, formerly part of the New Amstel City Hall, and later the Archives of the city of Amsterdam. After a profound recovery project, which respected all the historical elements, this hotel was born, representing an important step for the Pestana Hotel Group as this is the first Pestana Collection Hotels unit outside of Portugal.

Arquitectura e luz natural, uma expressão da mente humana e da natureza que funciona na perfeição em cada esquina de Amesterdão, onde as sombras e o sol coabitam com as paredes, tijolos e bicicletas em cada rua. É um diálogo que certamente existirá para sempre. Contudo, isto raramente se verifica em ambientes fechados: paredes e tectos dificultam a entrada dos raios do sol por dentro dos edifícios lindíssimos desta cidade. Independentemente disso, em frente ao rio mais importante de Amesterdão, existe um lugar no bairro de De Pijp onde a arquitectura clássica inspira elegância. Aí sim, as janelas dançam com a luz do sol, tornando qualquer estadia perfeita.

Este é o Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel: um lugar onde a história e o modernismo convergem. Abriu recentemente e trouxe à cidade um sítio para se viverem experiências únicas, luxuosas e confortáveis, dentro de um edifício Neo-Renascentista, criado em 1892 pelo famoso arquitecto holandês Roelof Kuipers. 126 anos depois, a marca portuguesa Pestana Hotel Group transformou o Arquivo da Comunidade de Amesterdão num local onde luz e história vivem lado a lado.

Architecture and natural light, an expression of the human mind and nature that works perfectly in every corner of Amsterdam, where the shadows and the sun dialogue with every wall, brick and bicycle, on every street. It is a conversation that will certainly last forever. However, it rarely works indoors: walls and roofs do not help the sunshine make its way inside the beautiful buildings of the city. Nevertheless, there is a place in De Pijp with an atmosphere of elegance and classical architecture in front of Amsterdam’s most important river, where windows dance with the sunlight, creating the perfect atmosphere for an enjoyable stay.

This is the Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel: a place where history and modernism converge. It was recently opened to give the city a unique, comfortable and luxurious experience in this Neo-Renaissance style building, created in 1892 by the famous Dutch Architect Roelof Kuipers. 126 years later the Portuguese brand, Pestana Hotel Group, transformed the Archives of the Amsterdam Community into a place where light and history live together.

Em segundo lugar, beneficia de um restaurante e bar soberbos, geridos pelo chef holandês Peter Lute, famoso pela sua participação no programa MasterChef e pelos seus sofisticados pratos de autor, muito inspirados nas ervas aromáticas. Delicie-se com o ambiente do ARC, dominado por uma luz esplêndida e por iguarias que tão depressa não vai esquecer. Pratos como o Truffelrisotto, o Ossenstaraart (rabo de boi), o smokey entrecôte e os menus de degustação, incluíndo um vegetariano, já tornaram este espaço numa referência gastronómica imperdível em Amesterdão.

Por último, o Pestana Amsterdam Riverside suscita a inspiração de todas as formas possíveis. Apesar de esta ser uma característica de Amesterdão, o hotel realmente intensifica essa experiência: assim que os convidados abrem os olhos, reparam que cada canto, cada cortinado, cadeira, tapete, janela ou outro artigo decorativo, foi cuidadosamente pensado para inspirar o trabalho e dia-a-dia dos hóspedes. Os momentos passados na cidade tornam-se assim inesquecíveis.

Secondly, it boasts a superb restaurant and bar, run by the Dutch chef Peter Lute, famous for his participation in the MasterChef TV programme and for his sophisticated signature dishes inspired by aromatic herbs. Indulge in the ambience of the ARC, dominated by splendid lighting and delicacies that won’t be easy to forget. Dishes such as the truffel risotto, the Ossenstaraart (oxtail), the smokey entrecôte and the tasting menus, including a vegetarian one, have already made this place a gastronomic landmark not to be missed in Amsterdam.

Finally, there’s an inspiring vibe throughout the Pestana Amsterdam Riverside. Even though this is the main characteristic of Amsterdam, this hotel intensifies the experience when guests open their eyes and realize that every corner, curtain, chair, carpet, window and decoration have been carefully thought through to provide guests with a perfect break, inspiring their work, life or just making the experience unforgettable.

É impossível não me lembrar do grande poeta holandês Hendrik Marsman, que seguramente se inspirou neste edifício dos Arquivos da Comunidade de Amesterdão, juntamente com a arquitetura da cidade e todo o seu ambiente. Assim como é inevitável sentir todo o poder da história inscrito neste edifício onde ficaram depositadas as cartas de Darwin a Gandhi, onde se arquivaram queixas famosas, como a do desaparecimento da bicicleta de Anne Frank, e tantos outros documentos que sobreviveram ao tempo para confirmarem toda a riqueza de Amesterdão.

It’s impossible not to remember the great Dutch poet Hendrik Marsman, who was probably inspired by the Archives Building of Amsterdam, along with the city’s overall architecture and atmosphere. It’s also inevitable not to feel the power of history embedded in this building, where letters from Darwin to Gandhi were archived, where police reports were filed, such as the one about the theft of Anne Frank’s bicycle and so many other documents that have survived the passage of time to affirm all the richness of Amsterdam.

Amesterdão é conhecida por esse mundo fora como cidade na vanguarda da tolerância, uma das principais razões para viajar até este sítio maravilhoso. Apesar de muitos viajantes ficarem surpreendidos, é bastante comum ver duas ou três pessoas na mesma bicicleta enquanto o condutor olha para o seu telemóvel... e a polícia nada faz quanto a isso. Neste caso, a paisagem absolutamente plana torna-se uma vantagem.

Regra principal: “Faz o que te apetecer, desde que não incomodes os outros.” O mesmo se aplica às drogas, à prostituição e a quase tudo o que se passa na cidade. Quando se pergunta a um local de onde vem esta atitude, a tendência é sorrir e responder: “Não somos tolerantes, somos homens de negócios”. E aí lembramo-nos que uma das igrejas mais antigas se encontra no centro da cidade, no Red Light District, onde os padres vendiam o perdão aos inúmeros marinheiros que aqui chegavam.

The idea of Amsterdam being the avant-garde of tolerance is widespread and well-known and is one of the main reasons why people travel to this extraordinary place. Much to the surprise of some travellers, it is common to see three or more people on the same bike, while the driver checks his cell phone... and the police do nothing about it. The flat landscape helps in this case.

Main rule: “Do whatever you want, as long as you do not bother anyone”. Same applies to drugs, prostitution and almost anything that happens in the city. When you ask a native Amsterdammer where this attitude comes from, they tend to smile and answer: “We are not tolerant, we are businessmen” and then one thinks of the oldest church of the city, placed in the middle of the Red Light District, where priests would sell forgiveness to the many sailors who arrived here.

The centre of this fascinating and diverse city reminds us of the shape of a heart, encircled by the everflowing canals named according to their hierarchal royal positions: starting from the outer Prince-canal, followed by the Knight-canal and ending with the powerful, inner most, Lord-canal. These canals are the platform for many activities, depending on the season.

da primavera, os canais tornam-se um campo de batalha amigável na luta pela melhor festa num barco. Nos dias mais frios do inverno, os canais gelados enchem-se de crianças radiantes, os seus pais atentos e de turistas deslumbrados por estarem a andar sobre a água. Os amesterdaneses, esses, sentam-se no seu sítio habitual, à beira de um canal, desfrutando de uma bebida quente e quiçá um cigarro.

During the coldest winter days the frozen canals are a playground for happy children and their onlooking parents, tourists in awe of the fact that they are walking on water and the local Amsterdammers sitting at their usual spot at the edge of the canal enjoying a warm drink and maybe a cigarette.

O clima contribuiu decisivamente para o ambiente de camaradagem que se sente na cidade. A viagem curta de ferry desde o Norte até à estação central é o momento perfeito para as pessoas se juntarem ora sob a chuva interminável ora sob os raios de sol.

Os parques da cidade, esses, encontram-se cheios de grupos, grandes ou pequenos, e das suas mantas coloridas, petiscos e copos de vinho rosé. Ao que parece, assim que o sol brilha, toda gente mete baixa.

A cena alternativa da cidade encontra-se ligeiramente afastada do centro, como consequência direta do movimento de contracultura que surgiu nos anos setenta. Juntamente com Berlim, os dissidentes da Europa do Norte sentiam-se em casa em Amesterdão. Hoje em dia, encontramos refeições vegan e uma diversidade de atividades nesse tipo de sítios, apesar dos pequenos cafés tradicionais e as suas paredes de madeira, tão acolhedoras, permanecerem como relíquias dos tempos antigos. Esta velha Amesterdão oferece sítios para se conversar, beber uma cerveja e reencontrar-se com o passado. Estes são também os sítios favoritos dos vários artistas que viajam desde os quatro cantos do mundo para viver nesta fantástica cidade.

The weather strongly contributes to the feeling of camaraderie in this city. The short ferry-ride from the North to the Central Station is a perfect moment to feel togetherness in the never-ending rain showers or sunshine. The city parks are full of large and intimate groups, on their coloured rugs, snacking and drinking glasses of Rosé. It seems that everyone calls in sick the minute the sun starts to shine. Slightly removed from downtown, the city also boasts an alternative scene, a direct consequence of the counterculture movement of the seventies. Along with Berlin, Amsterdam was where the Northern European mavericks felt at home.

Now, vegan meals and an infinite variety of activities are offered in these cities but somehow the small, cosy, wooden-walled traditional bruin cafés are remnants from past times. This Old Amsterdam offers places to chat, have a beer and encounter the past. These are also the favourite places of many artists who come from all over the world to live in this tremendous city.

De Pijp é um dos bairros da moda, onde os visitantes poderão encontrar gastronomia de todo o mundo, representando as 180 nacionalidades que existem em Amesterdão. No coração de De Pijp encontra-se o famoso mercado Albert Cuyp, um dos maiores da cidade e onde praticamente tudo se encontra à venda, desde bicicletas a jóias, roupa e livros usados. O bairro Jordaan também merece ser visitado. Outrora um local para marujos e operários, hoje é o pólo da vida boémia. Os moradores mais idosos de Jordaan parecem estar sempre dispostos a contar as suas histórias aos passantes, que por lá se aventuram.

De Pijp is one of the trendiest neighbourhoods where visitors can find cuisine from all over the world, representative of the 180 nationalities that we can find in Amsterdam. In the heart of De Pijp is the famous Albert Cuyp Market, the city’s largest and a house for everything, from bikes and jewellery to clothing and secondhand books. The Jordaan is also not to be missed. Once the place for sailors and factory workers, it is now the centre of bohemia. The elderly inhabitants always seem willing to share their mysterious stories with any passerby.

Annika Kappner & Giacomo Garziano Entrevista e fotos Interview & photos Juliana Gómez

Durante 10 anos, Annika e Giacomo têm vivido intermitentemente em Amesterdão, onde se conheceram em 2011. Annika cresceu em Berlim e no Sul da Alemanha, viveu em Milão, Roterdão e em Nova Iorque por um curto período de tempo. Giacomo, por seu lado, nasceu no Sul de Itália e mudou-se para a Holanda, após concluir os seus estudos em Florença e Paris. Giacomo gere um estúdio de arquitectura e design, o GG-loop, enquanto que Annika é uma artista plástica. Ambos trabalham num contexto internacional e juntamente com um grupo de amigos fundaram o colectivo artístico multidisciplinar ‘Elephants and Volcanoes’ (Elefantes e Vulcões), unindo criativos desde Lima, Nova Iorque, Zurique e Amesterdão.

Annika and Giacomo have been living on and off in Amsterdam for almost 10 years where they met in 2011.

Having grown up in Berlin and Southern Germany, Annika has also lived in Milan, Rotterdam and briefly in New York. Giacomo was born in the South of Italy and after his studies in Florence and Paris moved to the Netherlands. Giacomo runs GG-loop, an architectural and design studio, Annika is a visual artist. Both work internationally and share their love for collaborations, cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary projects. Together with a group of friends they co-founded the multi disciplinary artist collective “Elephants and Volcanoes” that unites creatives from Lima, New York, Zurich and Amsterdam.

O que vos inspira? Nomeiem uma das vossas primeiras fontes de inspiração.

(AK) O Monet foi o meu primeiro amor - os Nenúfares.

Hoje em dia, o que mais me inspira é a beleza infinita e a inteligência da natureza, sobretudo no que toca às plantas e à vida marinha. Adoro ver documentários sobre a natureza e entusiasmo-me com todo o tipo de organismos vivos, tanto à escala micro como macro. Adoro todas as cores, tenho uma relação de amor-ódio com a moda. Adoro arquitetura, cinematografia, culturas ancestrais, cosmologia...

(GG) O meu trabalho baseia-se sobretudo na música e na ciência. Para mim, a Natureza consiste na união entre os dois. A minha primeira revelação foi Platão, quando fala sobre o reino das ideias e o conceito do conhecimento. Ah, não, afinal essa foi a minha segunda revelação. A primeira de todas foi quando vi o videoclip ‘Innuendo’, dos Queen. A música já é uma viagem em si e uma combinação perfeita com imagens torna a experiência fora deste mundo.

Lembro-me de sonhar com esse clip durante anos.

What inspires you? Name one of your earliest inspirations.

(AK) Monet was my first love - the Nymphéas. Today one of the most inspiring things for me is the infinite beauty and intelligence of nature, especially in plant and marine life. I’m a fan of nature documentaries and get very excited about all sorts of living organisms, from micro to macro scale. Colour in all its forms. I have a love/hate relationship with fashion. I love architecture, cinematography, ancient cultures, different cosmologies…

(GG) My work is mainly influenced by music and science, with nature being for me, the union of these two. My first revelation was Plato, when he talks about the realm of ideas and the concept of knowledge. Oh no, that’s actually my second one. My first one was the video clip of “Innuendo”

by Queen. The music is a journey in itself and the perfect combination with the imagery makes the experience so outerly. I remember dreaming of that clip for years after.

Porque escolheram Amesterdão? É geograficamente muito central, tem um tamanho humano; o facto de poder ir a todo o lado de bicicleta é um luxo; as pessoas envolvem-se nas coisas, são empenhadas no que fazem. Ainda restam alguns elementos peculiares dos anos 60 e 70 por aí escondidos. Amesterdão tem uma cena criativa internacional muito activa e inovadora.

A brief summary of the places you have been and the experiences you have had, the big and important changes.

Why Amsterdam?

It is very centrally located, it is human in size; the fact that you can do everything by bike is a great luxury; people are engaging and caring. It still has some 60s and 70s quirkiness hidden away here and there. Amsterdam has a very active, innovative and international creative scene.

Where do you live? In the Jordaan.

How often do you travel and why?

On average, one short trip every month, often workrelated.

Em média, fazemos uma viagem curta uma vez por mês, muitas vezes relacionada com trabalho.

What does travelling mean to you?

Movement, meeting new people, reconnecting with friends, new impressions, new ideas, colours, atmospheres - different light, different skies, tastes, habits, etc.

O que significa viajar para vocês?

Movimento, conhecer novas pessoas, voltar a relacionar-se com amigos, novas impressões e ideias, cores, ambientes, luzes diferentes, céus diferentes, gostos, costumes, etc.

What was the most beautiful place you visited together, where do you find beauty?

Venice in autumn, especially in November. Magical, incredibly beautiful and nostalgic. At that time of the year the city is usually flooded, the cityscape is mirrored on the ground and the air is thick and moist. It feels like the city envelops you and enters your body. That exact feeling is very well expressed in the movie Casanova by Federico Fellini.

Qual foi o sítio mais bonito que visitaram juntos? O que veêm de bonito nele?

Veneza no outono, especialmente em Novembro. Mágica, incrivelmente linda e nostálgica. Nessa altura do ano, a água sobe muito e quase inunda as ruas, a cidade fica espelhada na água e o ar fica denso e húmido. Parece que a cidade te envolve e entra para dentro de ti. O filme Casanova, de Federico Fellini, transmite bem essa mesma sensação.

Onde se sentem mais em casa?

(Risos) A nossa casa é onde está o nosso coração. Esta é uma pergunta muito difícil. Sentimo-nos em casa quando estamos perto de amigos íntimos, dos nossos entes queridos, em geral pela Europa...

Where in the world do you both feel most at home?

(Laughter) Home is where the heart is. This is a very difficult one, close to friends, loved ones, Europe at large...

Favorite places or cities?

(AK) The dry forest of the Chaparri Ecological Reserve, Lambayeque a beautiful natural reserve in the North West of Peru, Venice in November, the small grottos of the Island of Ustica, the area around the Lingyun Mountain, Leshan in Switzerland.

(GG) Monopoli and Piazza Duomo in Pistoia in Italy, Hyde Park in London, Place Dauphine in Paris, the dry forest of Chaparri in Peru.

What are your favorite places in Amsterdam?

The Eye (Film Museum & Restaurant), cycling through Vondelpark, De School (restaurant and bar), De Uitkijk (Movie Theater), Café Tabac for the view and walking through the Jordaan.

Quais são os vossos rituais quando viajam?

(GG) Levo a minha mala do Darth Vader, para que a força esteja comigo (risos), e garanto que levo comigo o meu caderno preferido, a minha caneta preferida, os meus dois cristais Rose Quartz e Malachite e a minha camera 360.

What are your rituals when travelling?

(GG) I take my Darth Vader suitcase so that the force is with me (laughter) and make sure my favourite notebook, my favourite pen, my two Rose quartzs and Malachit crystals and the 360 camera are in there.

O que te agrada mais na experiência de ficar num quarto de hotel?

(AK) A brancura impecável dos lençóis da cama (risos).

(GG) Eu adoro quando algo os torna especiais, diferentes de outros quartos de hotel. Não me importo assim tanto com o conforto, importa-me mais sentir que estou num sítio onde gostaria de voltar. Pode depender apenas da vista que tem, por exemplo.

What do you love most about being in a hotel room?

(AK) The crisp white bed sheets (laughs).

(GG) I love it when there is something that makes it special, different from other hotel rooms. I don’t care much about the possible comfort, I care about feeling that it’s somehow a place I’d like to go back to. It can simply be the view out of the windows, for example.

Qual a primeira coisa que fazem quando chegam a um quarto de hotel?

(AK) Desfaço a mala e organizo as minhas roupas, livros, produtos de beleza... torno cada sítio a minha casa.

(GG) Eu viajo sempre com o mínimo de coisas possível, desfaço a mala rapidamente, tomo um duche para me refrescar da viagem e parto à descoberta da cidade ou sítio.

What’s the first thing you do when you reach a hotel room?

(AK) I unpack my suitcase and organize my clothes, books, toiletry, etc. - I make myself at home.

(GG) I always travel with as little as possible, so I unpack my suitcase quickly, then shower to refresh after the travelling and I set off to explore the city or place.

What is your earliest travel memory?

(AK) Skiing in the Italian Dolomites when I was four. The white gleaming snow, dark green pine trees and homemade pappardelle con sugo with a nut of butter dissolving on top, evaporating delicious smells - all these are mixed together in a wonderful warm sensation.

(GG) Summer holidays at a Southern Italian beach with my large family. The smell of sunscreen, watermelons, salt on the skin, colourful striped shirts, cycling and singing, the sound of the frogs and the wind in the trees.

Qual é a primeira vossa memória de viagem?

(AK) Fazer ski nas Dolomites em Itália, quando tinha quatro anos. A neve estava tão branca que reluzia, os pinheiros eram verde escuro e lembro-me de massa pasta papardelle caseira com molho e uma noz de manteiga a derreter por cima, o cheiro que de lá se evaporava era absolutamente delicioso - a todas estas memórias se junta uma sensação maravilhosa, quente e familiar.

(GG) As férias numa praia no Sul de Itália, com a família alargada. O cheiro do protetor solar, as melancias, o sal na pele, uma t-shirt às riscas colorida, cantar e andar de bicicleta, o som dos sapos e do vento nas árvores.

Where in the world have you felt happiest?

(AK) In quiet places close to the water or on a boat on the Mediterranean.

(GG) When I saw the sunrise on the rocks next to the sea, in the Porto Selvaggio Natural Reserve in Puglia, Italy.

Onde no mundo se sentiram mais felizes?

(AK) Em sítios calmos, perto do mar ou num barco no mar mediterrâneo.

(GG) Quando vi o pôr do sol nas rochas perto do mar, na reserva natural do Porto Selvaggio em Puglia, Itália.

How does travelling affect your work and creative process?

What places inspire you most?

Travelling helps gather new insights as it creates both a physical and mental distance. Cities and nature alike, for different reasons. It depends on the mood and circumstances. Right now we are in Switzerland and can’t wait to go hiking in the Alps, to breathe in the clean air and be in touch with nature.

De que forma é que viajar afeta o vosso trabalho e processo criativo? Que sítios vos inspiram mais?

Viajar ajuda a absorver novos conhecimentos, porque cria distância tanto mental como física. As cidades e a natureza ajudam nisso, cada uma da sua forma. Depende do estado de espírito e do contexto. Neste momento, estamos na Suíça e mal podemos esperar por ir caminhar pelos Alpes, respirar o ar puro e estar na natureza.

É para muitos a viagem de uma vida, e basta chegar ao Pestana Kruger Lodge para perceber porquê. Mal chegamos ao hotel, de cinco estrelas, sentamo-nos num dos sofás do grandioso deck, enquanto somos recebidos com uma cerveja gelada. De imediato, sentimo-nos acolhidos num autêntico Éden. A natureza, no seu esplendor, agarra-nos todos os sentidos e tudo o que queremos é parar o tempo. Sem conseguirmos desprender o olhar deste cenário perfeito, lembramo-nos que a água tónica é ideal para prevenir as picadas dos mosquitos e é o pretexto perfeito para um gin tónico. À nossa frente, o final da tarde chega e transforma o Crocodile River num autêntico jacuzzi de elefantes. Na margem do rio, tímidas e atentas, as impalas, tal como nós, matam a sua sede.

A chegada dos hipopótamos, em época de acasalamento, perturba a paz do rio, apenas por breves instantes. O silêncio da savana volta e é a pauta perfeita para uma melodia de sons da natureza no seu estado mais puro.

For many, it’s a trip of a lifetime and you’ll soon realize why when you get to the Pestana Kruger Lodge. As soon as we arrived at the five-star hotel, we sat down on one of the couches on the grandiose deck and were greeted with a cold beer. We immediately felt welcomed into this Eden.

Nature, in all its splendour, grabs us all by the senses and all we want is for time to come to a standstill. Unable to take our eyes off the perfect scenery, we remember that tonic water is ideal to prevent mosquito bites and is the perfect excuse for a gin and tonic. Before our eyes, sundown transforms Crocodile River into an authentic elephant Jacuzzi. On the banks of the river, timid and attentive, the impalas quench their thirst just like us. The arrival of the hippos, in the midst of their mating season, disturbs the river’s peace, just briefly. The silence of the savannah returns and is the perfect intro for a melody of sounds of nature in its purest state.

O sol vai-se despedindo por hoje. O nosso olhar, cada vez mais treinado, começa a perceber que o que parece um tronco é afinal um crocodilo, e as pequenas pedras no rio são afinal os olhos dos crocodilos à espera da próxima refeição. Entrar nesta dimensão da natureza é uma viagem interior que nos remete para a nossa insignificância. O céu alaranjado. Todo o cenário muda, e quando achamos que aquele momento é que é o perfeito, vem outro a seguir, com nova paleta de cores, mais perfeito ainda. Todos os nossos sentidos despertam nesta viagem.

The sun bids us farewell for the day. Our increasingly astute eyes begin to realize that what looks like a log is in fact a crocodile and what we think are small stones in the river are in fact crocodile eyes waiting for their next meal.

Entering this dimension of nature is an inward journey that reminds us of our insignificance. The sky is orange. The whole scene changes and when we think that the moment is a perfect one, another one follows, with a new palette of colours that are even more perfect. All our senses are awakened on this journey.

Ao chegar ao quarto, uma grande varanda sobre o Éden compete com o conforto das camas, e ficamos indecisos… a varanda ganha. A savana, com outro ritmo agora, segue cheia de vida e a nossa alma de explorador tenta descortinar o que acontece para lá da escuridão. Não fosse o compromisso de acordar às cinco da manhã, para o nosso primeiro safari, e a noite seria passada a ver estrelas e este documentário do National Geographic em direto.

When you reach your hotel room, a large balcony overlooking Eden competes with the comfortable beds and we are undecided ... the balcony wins.

The savannah, now in another rhythm, is still full of life and our explorer spirit tries to unveil what is going on beyond the darkness. If it weren’t for our commitment to wake up at five in the morning, for our first safari, the night would be spent star gazing and watching this live National Geographic documentary.

Não podiam ser mais intensos e felizes os primeiros momentos no Pestana Kruger Lodge. E é só o início.

Daqui a nada, depois de saborearmos os conhecidos pequenos-almoços na cama, saímos à real aventura. A esperança é realizar o sonho de encarar o leão, o elefante, o rinoceronte, o búfalo e o leopardo, os chamados Big Five. Afinal aqui é possível. Mesmo que não aconteça, está realizado o sonho de provar o Éden.

Our first hours at the Pestana Kruger Lodge could not have been more intense and happy. And it’s only just begun. In no time at all, after savouring the famous breakfast in bed, we are off on a real adventure.

Our hope is to realize the dream of looking at each of the so-called Big Five, the lion, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard, straight in the eye. It’s all possible here and even if it doesn’t happen, the dream of getting a taste of Eden has been fulfilled.

Pousada Convento Vila Viçosa

É absolutamente encantador o amanhecer em Vila Viçosa.

Mal abre as vidraças do quarto, na Pousada Convento de Vila Viçosa, uma orquestra de pássaros dá-lhe os bons dias e um inebriante perfume a jasmim e flor de laranjeira lançam um convite para se perder pelas ruas ladeadas de laranjeiras e repletas de história. Mas antes de se perder pela pacífica vila, descubra a Pousada instalada no antigo Convento Real das Chagas de Cristo, um monumento de 1514. Neste convento se recolhiam as jovens nobres do reino que ingressavam na vida religiosa, muitas delas nascidas de relações extra-conjugais da nobreza. Chegou a ser um dos mais ricos e opulentos conventos do país.

A nobreza das monjas explica porque é que, ainda hoje, alguns quartos têm dois pisos, o inferior era destinado às aias que acompanhavam a nobre noviça. Nesta pousada, inspirados pelas lendas e histórias locais, existem onze quartos temáticos, entre eles o do astrónomo, o quarto do professor ou do botânico.

The dawning of the day is absolutely enchanting in Vila Viçosa. As soon as you open the hotel room’s windows, at the Pousada Convento de Vila Viçosa, a bird orchestra wishes you a good morning and an intoxicating scent of jasmine and orange blossom invite you to get out and about on the streets lined with orange trees and laden with history.

But before you get lost in this peaceful village, discover the Pousada located in the former Royal Convent of the Chagas de Cristo, a monument dating back to 1514. It was at this convent that young women of the kingdom’s nobility, who entered into religious life, came together, many of them born of extramarital affairs of the nobility. It came to be of the richest and most opulent convents in Portugal. The nobility of the nuns explains why some rooms still have two floors; the lower one was for the ladies in waiting who would accompany the noble novices. At this Pousada, inspired by local legends and stories, there are eleven themed rooms, among which the astronomer’s, teacher’s and botanist’s rooms.

Pousada Convento Vila Viçosa

A constante presença de frescos do século XVI nas paredes, alguns deles em excelente estado de conservação, são um passaporte para viajar no tempo.

Com o silêncio por companhia, percorra os longos corredores do Convento, relaxe na sala da lareira, na sala do piano ou sinta o radioso sol nos claustros, enquanto se delicia com o som da água a correr. Nos meses mais quentes, a grande piscina exterior garante refrescar-lhe o corpo e a alma. E para que não interrompa momentos de plena felicidade, sobretudo aos mais novos, que sempre se recusam a sair da água, a equipa do hotel, liderada pelo diretor Sérgio Dias, organiza churrascos ao longo do dia, onde predominam os produtos locais. Esta preocupação em oferecer produtos locais da mais elevada qualidade está bem reflectida na carta de autor, assinada pelo Chef Nuno Marques, que lidera o restaurante instalado no antigo refeitório do convento. Entre as especialidades imperdíveis está o cação frito com um creme de coentros, a carne de porco preto com migas de espargos ou o típico Manjar das Chagas, uma sobremesa feita originalmente com peito de frango, mas posteriormente substituído por carne de coelho. Devido ao facto de esta ser uma tapada real, onde o rei e os nobres faziam caçadas, o convento recebia inúmeras peças de caça e assim a carne de coelho entrou na receita até hoje. De resto, os elementos ligados à caça e a cavalaria estão bem presentes na decoração do hotel e um pouco por toda a Vila. Basta começar a passear pela serena Vila Viçosa para sentir o ambiente de outrora.

The constant presence of 16th century frescoes on the walls, some of which in excellent condition, transport you back in time. In the company of silence, go down the Covent’s long corridors, relax in the fireplace room, in the piano room or feel the radiant sun in the cloisters, while delighting in the sound of running water. In warmer months, a dip in the large outdoor pool is guaranteed to refresh your body and soul. So as not to interrupt moments of pure joy, especially for the younger ones, who always refuse to get out of the pool, the hotel team, led by the Director Sérgio Dias, organizes barbecues which last all day, where local products predominate. This concern to provide local products of the highest quality is well reflected in the menu created by Chef Nuno Marques, who heads the restaurant installed in the convent’s former refectory. Among the specialties which ought not to be missed is the fried dogfish shark in a coriander cream, black pork with an asparagus crust or the typical Manjar das Chagas, a dessert originally made with chicken breasts which were later replaced with rabbit. Due to the fact that this was a royal hunting ground, where the King and nobles hunted, the convent was often given some of the game hunted and that is why rabbit meat became part of the recipe until this day. Moreover, hunting and cavalry themes are well represented in the hotel’s decoration and throughout the village. You just have to stroll through serene Vila Viçosa to sense the atmosphere of bygone days.

Entre o casario pintado de branco com barras amarelas ou azuis destacam-se casas apalaçadas que nos lembram que esta é terra de reis e rainhas, de caçadas reais e de alguns momentos marcantes na história portuguesa. Foi aqui que a 1 de Dezembro de 1640, D. João IV depositou a sua coroa real aos pés da Nossa Senhora da Conceição.

Consagrou-lhe o país e desde então nenhum outro Rei português voltou a usar coroa. Histórias que vai descobrir ao longo da viagem pelos principais monumentos.

Inevitavelmente, dada a proximidade com o hotel, vai cruzar-se com a imponente fachada de mármore de 110 metros do Paço Ducal. Chegou a ser residência permanente da família real portuguesa e foi aqui que o Rei D. Carlos e o príncipe herdeiro passaram a sua última noite antes de serem assassinados em Lisboa, em 1908.

Among the white houses painted with yellow or blue stripes, palatial houses stand out reminding us that this was once a land of kings and queens, royal hunts and some notable moments of Portuguese history. It was here that on December 1st, 1640, D. João IV placed his royal crown at the feet of Our Lady of the Conception. Assim bem como caminhar pelas muralhas do castelo medieval, conversar com os simpáticos capicolenses (nome dado aos habitantes de Vila Viçosa), visitar as inúmeras igrejas e mosteiros ou sentar-se num banco de jardim e ler a dor da grande poetisa Florbela Espanca, que aqui nasceu. A caça, a arqueologia, a agricultura, a etnografia, o mármore e a arte sacra ganharam estatuto de museu e podem ser visitados de terça a domingo, na sua maioria. Devido à localização central da Pousada pode desfrutar caminhando por toda a vila.

The implementation of the Republic in 1910 brought troubled periods to the village, with the republicans wishing to erase history, but in the 1940s, thanks to the importance of the great marble quarries, Vila Viçosa was reborn to display its ancient beauty. The Doge’s Palace, filled with tiles, frescoes, works of art, jewellery and even coaches, is a journey back in time that ought to be relived. Also, take a walk along the walls of the medieval castle, talk to the friendly Capicolenses (as the inhabitants of Vila Viçosa are known), visit the numerous churches and monasteries or just sit on a garden bench and read the pain of the great poet Florbela Espanca, who was born here.

Hunting, archaeology, agriculture, ethnography, marble and sacred art have gained museum status, most of which can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday.

PONTOS DE INTERESSE O Parque Natural da Arrábida, servido de uma biodiversidade ímpar em termos europeus, dispõe de oferta para pedestrianismo, BTT, trail running e escalada, com ponto de partida nos centros GOarrábida, localizados no Parque Urbano de Albarquel e junto das Piscinas de Azeitão. Na faixa costeira de Setúbal pode frequentemente observar-se golfinhos (roaz-corvineiro), um dos ex-líbris faunísticos da região.

Ponto de visita obrigatório é o Mercado do Livramento, considerado pelo jornal americano “USA Today” como um dos mercados de peixe mais famosos do mundo.

Mas um périplo pelo concelho não fica completo sem uma passagem por Azeitão. Durante séculos, a região foi uma das prediletas da aristocracia portuguesa que deixou um vasto legado de edifícios e monumentos de significativa importância histórica, justificando por si só uma visita. A gastronomia, com os queijos, vinhos e doçaria tortas e “esses” - em destaque, o artesanato e as habitações floridas convidam a um passeio a pé.

EVENTOS Os festivais gastronómicos, realizados ao longo do ano, promovem, sob a sigla “Setúbal Terra de Peixe”, produtos do mar e pratos típicos, como o choco frito e a caldeirada, a sardinha assada e o carapau manteiga, o alcorraz e as ostras.

A Feira de Sant’Iago, o principal certame a sul do Tejo (decorre entre a última semana de julho e a primeira de agosto) é um dos grandes eventos de verão, com 400 mil visitantes a desfrutarem de espetáculos musicais todas as noites, divertimentos, gastronomia e mostras de produtos, entre outras atividades. Destaque também para o Festival de Música de Setúbal, um fenómeno cultural único que junta em palco artistas mundialmente aclamados e a comunidade local.

A sardinha é a estrela e os azulejos das paredes admiráveis. Perto dali, a Casa da Cultura é outro espaço a merecer uma paragem. Trata-se de um polo dinamizador da atividade artística desenvolvida no concelho, conciliando diferentes valências.

Piet-Hein Bakker O Pestana Palace foi o palco escolhido para um breve encontro com o mais famoso holandês em Portugal. Pontualmente, à hora marcada, Piet-Hein Bakker, 53 anos, entra pelos portões do palácio. O conhecido produtor de televisão chega sorridente e começa por partilhar as suas memórias do espaço. A festa de um dos seus casamentos foi aqui.

Sentamo-nos à mesa, um café faz a ponte para a conversa com Piet-Hein, um advogado que sonhou com o glamour da vida de ator, mas acabou como bem-sucedido produtor de televisão. O seu rico percurso de vida está retratado no livro “Ladrão de Bicicletas”, editado em 2006. Piet-Hein revela como na juventude, com um amigo, roubava bicicletas em Amesterdão para depois as arranjar e vender, fazendo assim uns trocos. Histórias partilhadas neste livro autobiográfico, onde conta tudo o que lhe passou pela cabeça quando chegou a Portugal, em 1994. A convite de Joop van Den Ende e John de Mol, veio fundar a Endemol Portugal, uma das produtoras que revolucionaram a televisão neste país, numa altura em que as televisões privadas davam os primeiros passos. PietHein, conhecido como “o patrão da Endemol”, viria a ser responsável por sucessos de audiência como Chuva de Estrelas, Big Brother, Masterplan, a série Médico de Família, ou a gala Globos de Ouro. Em 1996 casa com a famosa atriz portuguesa Alexandra Lencastre, com quem teve duas filhas e em 2007 casa com a atual mulher, Patrícia Silva, com quem tem mais duas filhas. Profissionalmente, ainda fundou outra produtora, em 2008, a CBV Produções Televisivas, e atualmente dirige o entretenimento na produtora SP Entertainment, um cargo que o envolveu na organização do Festival Eurovisão da Canção e que viria a confirmar a sua capacidade de abraçar grandes desafios. Amante de carros e cães, conhecido no meio televisivo como um líder nato de equipas, Piet-Hein aceitou revelar-se um pouco mais e enfrentou o nosso questionário WINK.

The Pestana Palace was the chosen stage for a brief meeting with Portugal’s most famous Dutchman. 53-year-old PietHein Bakker enters the Palace’s gates, right on time. Smiling, the renowned TV producer starts by sharing his memories of this hotel. The party of one of his weddings was held here.

We sit down at a table and over coffee, we chat with PietHein, a lawyer who had always dreamed of the glamour of an actor’s life but ended up as a successful television producer.

His life is portrayed in the book “Bicycle Thief”, published in 2006. Piet-Hein reveals how he and a friend used to steal bicycles in Amsterdam when they were young, fix them up and then sell them to make some extra cash. Stories shared in this autobiographical book tell us everything that came to his mind when he first came to Portugal in 1994. Upon invitation

by Joop van Den Ende and John de Mol, he founded Endemol Portugal, one of the production houses that revolutionized television in this country, at a time when private television was in its early days. Piet-Hein, known as “the Endemol boss” was responsible for high-rated TV shows such as “Chuva de Estrelas”, Big Brother, Masterplan, the “Médico de Família” series and the Gala of the Golden Globes Awards. In 1996 he married the famous Portuguese actress Alexandra Lencastre, with whom he had two daughters and in 2007 he married his current wife, Patrícia Silva, with whom he has another two daughters.

Professionally, he also founded another production house in 2008, “CBV Produções Televisivas” and currently heads entertainment at SP Entertainment, a position that got him involved with the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest, confirming his ability to embrace great challenges.

A lover of cars and dogs, known in television as a born team leader, Piet-Hein agreed to reveal a little more about himself and answered our WINK questionnaire.

O que é para si a felicidade perfeita?

São momentos. Pode ser em casa com a família, o mais frequente, a passear os cães numa tarde em que me vim embora mais cedo do escritório, a criar um novo projeto televisivo, tudo depende das minhas expectativas no momento. Quanto maiores são as expectativas mais difícil é atingir a felicidade.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

They are moments. It can be at home with my family (the most frequent ones) walking the dogs on an afternoon when I leave the office early, creating a new television project, everything depends on my expectations at the time. The greater the expectations, the harder it is to achieve happiness.

What is your greatest fear? Death, of course.

Qual a característica que mais gosta em si mesmo?

Alguma diplomacia, talvez.

What trait do you like most about yourself?

A certain amount of diplomacy, perhaps.

Barack Obama, pelo lado humano, pelo sentido de humor, pelo que fez para equilibrar forças no mundo (parece uma frase de uma Miss, mas é verdade).

Barack Obama, for his human side, his sense of humour, for what he did to make the world a fairer place (this sounds like something a Miss World would say but it’s true).

O que considera ser a sua maior extravagância?

Já fiz alguns disparates com a compra de carros desportivos.

Mas estou a comportar-me bastante bem neste domínio, nos últimos anos!

What do you consider to be your greatest extravagance?

I have done some nonsense in the past, buying sports cars but I’ve been behaving better in recent years!

I go through several states of mind throughout the day...
