HOW DOES A MotoGP™

Official Programme

FRIDAY Friday is the day that you come through the gates and take your seats – or find the best place to watch from – as track action gets underway! For MotoGP, FP1 in the morning is a session to get familiarised with track conditions and see where the level is at. It’s the same for Moto2 and Moto3, before the even more important stuff fires up in the afternoon. For MotoGP, it’s a 60-minute session to decide the top ten, of whom move through automatically to Q2 qualifying on Saturday morning. Those who don’t make the cut get a second chance to move through in Q1, where the top two will join the already selected ten for the pole position shootout. So Practice is a big finish to Friday. Moto2 and Moto3 follow the same format as MotoGP, with Friday afternoon’s Practice session deciding the top 14 that are automatically in Q2. The rest are in Q1.

There’s another session of free practice – so essentially, track time – before qualifying starts. The Q1 session gives the riders in it a second shot at moving through to Q2 and the pole position shootout. The top two in Q1 move through. The rest have their grid positions decided, from P13 down.

Hay otra FP, para acumular más tiempo en pista, antes de que comience la clasificación. La sesión de Q1 da a los pilotos una segunda oportunidad para pasar a Q2 y luchar por la 'pole'. Los dos mejores de la Q1 ascienden. El resto tendrá sus posiciones de parrilla decididas, desde la 13º hacia atrás.

Then it’s time for Q2 at the fight for pole. It usually goes to the wire, and riders will usually do two runs. They’ll head out on a lap to warm up their tyres, go for a hot lap, and then a cool down lap on the way back in. The top three at the end are the front row starters, and they’ll head for parc ferme to celebrate.

Then, Moto3 and Moto2 qualify, before it’s Sprint time. The MotoGP Sprint is the first race action in the premier class, and half distance in comparison to the main Grand Prix on Sunday. The grid is the same for the Sprint and the GP race, and the action is just as spectacular. Seeing the lights go out twice on one weekend adds two huge spikes of awesome adrenaline to the event.

Sunday begins with MotoGP Warm Up, a ten minute session to basically check things over ahead of the main race. Maybe check a setup, just get dialled in. Then it’s parade time, where riders head out on an open top bus to do a lap of the track and greet the fans in the stands – this is LIVE on YouTube and features interviews throughout!

Every MotoGP weekend offers fans a chance to get closer to their heroes than ever before thanks to the Fanzone, Hero Walk and Rider Parade.

The MotoGP™ Fanzone is exactly how it sounds: a host of different fan activities all in one place. From on-stage entertainment – including the chance to hear from many of the riders – to music, merchandise, interactive shows and more, the Fanzone is the centre of the offtrack action. At many Grands Prix, it also hosts the podium ceremony for the Tissot Sprint! Along with seeing and hearing from the riders during a race weekend, there are a host of food and merch stands where you can find the best official MotoGP™ merchandising, as well as the attire worn by your favorite riders and teams. 2021 MotoGP™ World Champion Fabio Quartararo is a fan of the Fanzone. “The Fanzone has been a very positive experience for the fans and the riders. It lets us share very good moments

with the fans who come to see us live at the circuits and who want to see us more closely!” Meanwhile, the Hero Walk provides a chance to meet your favourite riders even more closely than that. MotoGP™ riders normally descend on the fan favourite area on Sunday morning, while emerging talents in the Moto2™ and Moto3™ classes make a trip down the Hero Walk earlier in the weekend. The Hero Walk is normally close to or within the MotoGP™ Paddock and is often the best bet for a selfie! If you can’t make it to the Hero Walk though, don’t fear – the riders will come to you. Or near enough! The Rider Parade every Sunday morning sees the MotoGP grid head out on an open top bus round the track to say hello to the fans in the stands, talk a little shop, and often give out some merchandise. And all before the lights go out a little later for the most exciting sport on earth.

Martin The reigning Champion will race with the #1 in 2025, and he’ll do it on a different bike. After duelling Francesco Bagnaia to the end in 2023 and coming up short, Martin won the rematch in 2024 – and that even after he took his future into his own hands and signed with Aprilia. That ended the speculation of Martin or Marc Marquez moving to partner Bagnaia at Ducati, and it sets up a mouth-watering 2025 as the #1 pits out from the Aprila garage instead. Everything – or nearly everything – that proved a chink in Martin’s armour since his impressive but then injury-hit MotoGP debut in 2021 seems to have been whittled way, with consistency and a lack of unforced errors playing a large part in how he took his maiden MotoGP crown. Now he’ll look to keep that going and prove another point in 2025 – that he can do just the same in his new home, Aprilia Racing.

Bagnaia If taking pressure and looking calm doing it were a person, it would probably be Francesco Bagnaia. But that’s not to say the two-time MotoGP champion hasn’t shown plenty of fire on his way to becoming one of the benchmarks in the sport. Just like his well-controlled, lights-to-flag wins aren’t the only way he’s arrived with two top class crowns, Bagnaia gets his elbows out like the best of them, and in doing so has played a memorable part in some of the best recent races – and best races ever. In 2025, it will be interesting to watch his approach. He’s not defending the #1, that’s gone to Aprilia with Jorge Martin. Will that see him go on the attack more? Or will the opposite be true? Marc Marquez arrives in the box 2025, and only one of the two will come out on top at Ducati. Whatever happens, if it’s a close rivalry it will prove only one thing: the quality of each.

Marquez Does Marc Marquez need an introduction? He arrived with a bang in 2013, rewrote some history, set out his stall as one side of a sport-defining rivalry and wrote some more history. And then it suddenly all changed and an arm injury threatened to end his career. But it didn’t. He came back, rolled the dice again on a switch to an Independent Team and a year-old Ducati, and came out swinging in 2024. He won again. And now he’s moving to the factory squad alongside Francesco Bagnaia. We’ve already seen fireworks between the two. We’ve also seen some truly incredible racing. As we said of Bagnaia, whatever happens, a close rivalry only proves the quality of each rider. For Marquez it’s also chance at a crown with a second manufacturer – something not many have ever achieved. Game on.

Like some others on the GP23 last season, it was a tougher run for Alex Marquez in 2024 – but not without highlights, including a slice of history at the German GP as he and brother Marc Marquez made it a double podium for the team. But after Sprint wins the year before, say to say he’ll have wanted more. And he will again in 2025. The GP24 this year is the defending champion as a motorcycle, and it’s yet to be seen what the step up may be to the GP25, of which there will only be three on the grid this year. Can Alex Marquez get back towards the podium again and fill out that position as team leader, now joined by rookie Fermin Aldeguer on the other side of the garage?

Then he decided to take a new turn and join Honda for a completely different challenge: leveraging his impressive technical knowhow to bring the giants back to the top. In 2024 his approach was mileage mileage mileage, but some points started to come in towards the end of the season. In 2025 the goal will be many more of them.

The 2020 MotoGP Champion has had a tougher time since joining Honda, with the project struggling to find its feet just as he had started to establish himself as a frontrunner in MotoGP. Since then, there have been some ups and downs, but the hard work behind the scenes for Honda is clear. Mir, for his part, signed up to remain with the project and keep pushing to take them back towards the top. The key goal will likely be more consistent finishes as HRC chip away at moving forward again, as well as some solid hauls of points as Mir looks to edge out teammate Luca Marini and the now-experienced Johann Zarco in the Honda rivalry.

Zarco It took a long run of podiums, poles and impressive performances from 2017 to late 2023 when Johann Zarco finally stood atop a MotoGP rostrum as a race winner. But not for lack of trying. Fresh from two Moto2™ titles, he made a splash on his debut with the independent Tech 3 team, then with Yamaha in 2017, to an ill-fated stint at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing before they were near the front. Then he landed at the Ducati-fielding Pramac team and the stars finally aligned. From there, Zarco made the move to Honda and the LCR team to make a second attempt at playing a bigger role in developing a bike. Since, he’s been a standout performer for the Japanese factory in qualifying and race trim, taking their best finish of 2024. Can he continue the trend in 2025?

Quartararo ‘El Diablo’ went from hyped Moto3 youngster to Moto2 back of the grid despair within the blink of an eye. But his talent remained clear, and after he got back on top in Moto2 he was given a roll of the dice to debut in MotoGP in 2019. When he did, he was soon duelling reigning champion Marc Marquez. Hype isn’t hype if it turns out to be real. The Frenchman soon took first podiums, first wins and then his maiden MotoGP title with a stunning charge in 2021, establishing himself as one of the biggest characters in the sport in the process. Since, it’s been a tougher one at Yamaha but the #20 decided to stay with the project and work towards bringing them back to that glory. With some standout results, as ever, he remains the leader of their charge.

After 2023 started with incredible glory as he won at COTA with Honda, making them the second factory he’d won in MotoGP with, Rins then suffered a broken leg at Mugello that derailed the campaign and nearly his career. He moved to Yamaha for 2024 and impressed the engineers, and he remains part of the project as they look to move forward. Not yet quite on the level with Fabio Quartararo, Rins will be looking for more in terms of his own results too. With two more Yamahas joining the grid as well, Rins’ experienced adds to that of his teammate in showing the lay of the land to new arrivals Miguel Oliveira and Jack Miller.

Morbidelli Class of the field in his Moto2 title winning year in 2017, Morbidelli has impressed in MotoGP too – but will want to rekindle some of his earlier form in the class. After coming second in the 2020 title fight with Yamaha, fortunes waned for both and he joined Pramac on a GP24 in 2024. But after a big crash in training before pre-season even began, he was sidelined from all of it and only back up to speed after a few race weekends. There were flashes of brilliance thereafter and a Sprint podium, but a new start at VR46 promises more. Back to full fitness and up to speed, he also stays on the GP24 – looking to leverage that experience as he joins the team fielded by the academy he’s been part of since his early career.

When ‘Diggia’ headed to the grid for the 2023 Qatar GP race, he didn’t have a ride confirmed for the following season. Knowing what we do now – that he went out and straight up defeated eventual champion Francesco Bagnaia to take his maiden MotoGP win – that seems even crazier than it did then. But he got a ride with the VR46 team and he’s retained it for 2025, now also getting only the third GP25 on the grid this season alongside Bagnaia and Marc Marquez in the factory squad. It’s quite a trajectory and one that’s proven both popular and deserved. After missing the last couple of race weekends of 2024 for shoulder surgery too, ‘Diggia’ aims to be more or less back at 100% fitness for lights out at Buriram. Can he add to that so far lonely MotoGP victory in 2025? If he does, it’ll likely be another instance of “everyone liked that”, just as it was for that stunning debut win.

When the lights went out for Acosta’s MotoGP career to begin, safe to say there was some expectation. It’s also safe to say the rookie fulfilled it. First podiums, first poles, and a first duel with Marc Marquez in his very first race… Acosta most definitely arrived in 2024. Just as he did in Moto2 before that and Moto3 before that. Now he’s moving to the factory squad alongside Brad Binder, there’s little doubt he’ll be incredible to watch once again. Can he bring some glory back to the orange squad? It’s been a tougher run and a dry spell without Grand Prix wins, and Acosta will definitely back himself to try and end that ASAP. A whole lot of fans will back him too, with the rookie sensation already having established himself as a big crowd favourite ahead of his sophomore season. And not without reason.

The Stewards let it stand. Now it’s a new challenge for Bastianini as he joins Red Bull KTM Tech3 and take on a different bike. He’s always seemed able to surprise, despite his impressive CV, so can he do it again?

Everyone thought Ai Ogura would challenge for the 2024 Moto2 crown, but few probably put money on him winning it before the season started. But win it he did, and with some brilliant performances on the way alongside impressive consistency. With that, he’s the first Asia Talent Cup alumnus to take a World Championship, and the first Japanese Grand Prix champion since Hiroshi Aoyama in the 250cc class in 2009. Ogura’s form last year, coupled with what we’ve already seen and his showings in Moto3, speak to a quality rider and Trackhouse agreed as they signed him up for the premier class. How will he settle in on MotoGP machinery?

So, what’s new for 2025? Beyond the lineup, the Desmosedici GP25 is an evolution of the groundwork done previously and Gigi Dall’Igna has been quoted in the media that the bike has small evolutions rather than a revolution of the step made from 2023 to 2024. What’s clear is the manufacturer that took their 100th premier class win last year and possesses a 25% win rate from all starts will once again have a target on their back.

A line-up that has all the prospects of success, it’s been a long-time without a dry Grand Prix win for the Austrian brand. In the postseason test in Barcelona, KTM brought a new set of exhausts and have been trying to work on their throttle connection and make the power smoother and more usable to limit wheelspin. The exhausts featured an exhaust valve them for the first time, perhaps aiming to improve braking.

Despite the highlights of the COTA win and Sprint success, it was a challenging season overall for Aprilia, who secured the bronze medal in the manufacturers’ standings. Already, the 2025 RS-GP is a step forward, with Jorge Martin transitioning over and hailing the front-end feeling, helped by new downwash ducts. It’s early stages but after the acquisition of tech guru Fabiano Sterlacchini from KTM, the Italian manufacturer seek an improvement and to lead the charge against the Ducati onslaught.

Martin’s move likewise brings a new face and fresh ideas to the technical side: Daniele Romagnoli, a long-time Ducati crew chief, follows ‘The Martinator’ to Aprilia and with that, a wealth of knowledge. That combined with existing RSGP insight by Bezzecchi’s crew chief Francesco Venturato, ex-KTM and Ducati engineer Sterlacchini and the same team management of Paolo Bonora, will promise much to give in 2025. Bezzecchi’s recent performances have showed Aprilia is very close to being at Ducati’s level.

Yamaha’s history in the sport is a glorious one, with 245 wins and over 500 races on the podium, although their last win was in Germany three years ago. Whilst it’s a far cry from the past and even 2022, the Japanese manufacturer face their challenges head on and that’s also true behind the scenes. Lin Jarvis has vacated his long-time role and is replaced by Paolo Pavesio.

Since Marc Marquez left Honda at the end of 2023, a shift in mentality has been required at Honda HRC, with 2024 being a challenging year and the manufacturer looking to the future. Like fellow Japanese manufacturer Yamaha, they’ve been overthrown from their chair at the top in recent years by the return to force of the European manufacturers but that doesn’t mean Honda HRC are down and out completely. 2020 World Champion Joan Mir, Luca Marini, Johann Zarco and Thailand’s Somkiat Chantra will work intensely to deliver results, of which their best in 2024 was a P8 by Zarco at Buriram. But work is being undertaken behind the scenes; Honda have poached ex-Aprilia technical director Romano Albesiano, who was part of the Noale brand in that role since 2013, replacing Gigi Dall’Igna who moved to Ducati. This time, Albesiano replaces Ken Kawauchi, who moves to the test team, which also

But the Spaniard couldn’t envision the mental strength that would be required to recover from four separate injuries. The third of those came in a crash in Qatar when he was seriously injured and left doubting his future.

No cabe duda de que 2025 ha sido un año difícil para Jorge Martín. El Campeón del Mundo de MotoGP™ del año pasado sabía que le esperaba una dura adaptación a la moto de Aprilia tras cuatro exitosas temporadas con Ducati. Pero el español no podía imaginar la fortaleza mental que necesitaría para recuperarse de cuatro lesiones distintas. La tercera de ellas llegó tras un accidente en Qatar, en el que resultó gravemente herido y le hizo dudar de su futuro.

“You are never prepared for being close to dying,” Martin admitted when he came back from injury in July. “In life you always have different situations, but sometimes there are situations that you don't expect, and then they arrive, and it's really tough to accept. And Qatar was one of them. I was in a really bad situation. And for me to be here today, it demonstrates to me the courage that I have and it gives me more motivation.”

His comeback from there was impressive. He was seventh in his first race back at Brno and an incredible fourth in his third. And a test at Misano in September helped him get even more comfortable aboard the RS-GP.

“I think the most important thing is the handlebars. I felt super good. I feel more stability in braking, more control, and more handling also in change of direction. And the bike is less physical. I can go throughout all the race with less effort. So if I need to push a bit more, like for example, time attack, I can do it.”

A further crash at Motegi put him out for four further rounds. But Martin is still upbeat and believes Aprilia have caught up to Ducati. “Now we are really, really close to Ducati. We struggle much more when we go to a different track. (But) I think we are building a lot for next season. Because every time we go on a track, the bike is different to last season. So all the electronics is the main issue.

The Tissot Sprint isn’t the only racing fans can enjoy on a Saturday. At seven European Grands Prix in 2025, the grandstands on site and viewers around the world get the chance to watch not one, but two races for the MotoE™ World Championship.

MotoE started as a Cup with mostly single-race rounds, and now it’s grown into a World Championship comprising solely double headers – seven of them in 2025. It’s now with Ducati machinery too, with the V21L breaking records when it debuted as the bike for everyone on the MotoE grid in 2023. As from its inception in 2019, MotoE races on Michelin rubber with an impressive amount of recycled and sustainable materials in them. The combination makes some of the most spectacular racing action of a Grand Prix weekend.

In terms of the competitors, reigning Champion Hector Garzo returns with Dynavolt Intact GP, 2023 champion Mattia Casadei is back with the LCR E-Team, and former Cup winners Jordi Torres (Aspar Team) and Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE) also return. They’re joined by the likes of perennial frontrunner Eric Granado (LCR E-Team) from Brazil and 2024’s revelation Oscar Gutierrez at MSI… as well as some interesting rookies like Moto2™ race winner Lorenzo Baldassarri (Dynavolt Intact GP).

There’s also a new track debuting this year as MotoE goes to Hungary for the first time. The season is set to be a stunner and runs longer than any before: the world-famous Le Mans kicks us off before the classic TT Circuit Assen, then it’s a trip to the modern classic of the Red Bull Ring. From there, that debut trip to Hungary beckons for Round 4 at Balaton Park.

Durante el sábado y el domingo del fin de semana de carreras, los invitados tienen acceso a las parrillas de Moto3™, Moto2™ y MotoGP™ y al paddock, ¡e incluso pueden acceder a la ceremonia del podio! En 2024 entregamos 61 motocicletas a Gambia. A través de nuestro nuevo proyecto "Gift a Motorcycle" también recaudamos fondos para 22 motocicletas más que se entregarán en 2025 como parte de un proyecto vital de reposición de la flota. La formación a menudo puede ser tan vital como el equipamiento. En noviembre, Two Wheels pudo pagar la visita del experto Gary Taylor al programa de Lesoto de la organización asociada Riders for Health para mejorar las habilidades de nuestro propio equipo de formadores.
