KAWASAKI Se dijo que el piloto turco de 32 años se retiraría de la competición al final de la temporada pasada para concentrarse en entrenar y criar a un amplio grupo de jóvenes pilotos de su país natal, los cuales está graduando en la serie junior del paddock World Superbike y más allá. Pero a pesar de que Kenan se rompiera algunos huesos de la mano en un accidente fuera de pista durante una sesión de pretemporada, no es tan fácil dejar la competición, especialmente si lo llevas en la sangre y eres tan rápido y cosechas tantos éxitos como él. Estas son las estadísticas de Kenan a su llegada a Aragón: 116 carreras, 78 podios, 38 victorias (¡con 3 en esta pista!) y 5 títulos mundiales.

Sofuoglu se adentra a su 3ª temporada sobre la italiana ZX–6R de Kawasaki Puccetti Racing, con la cual ha sido Campeón en las dos pasadas temporadas. El resto de la parrilla está rezando para que Kenan tarde en ponerse en forma después de su lesión, pero

Manuel Puccetti trajo al prometedor joven piloto italiano Michael Canducci como compañero de equipo de Kenan tras impresionar la temporada pasada en la clase con sus 19 añitos. Pero Michael competirá ahora bajo la bandera del Equipo Junior de Puccetti, con el respaldo del organizador italiano de la serie, la FMI.

Recientemente, tanto Kenan como Jonathan Rea han persuadido a Kawasaki a darle una oportunidad sobre la moto Puccetti a otro piloto de 19 años, el británico Kyle Ryde. Tras competir con 3 marcas distintas la temporada pasada, ha encontrado estabilidad esta temporada sobre una de las más laureadas motos de peso medio en el paddock. A Kyle se le hicieron las pruebas de pretemporada cuesta arriba, pero cuajaron él y su prototipo ZX–6R justo para la carrera de Australia, demostrando que puede competir cómodamente en la parte delantera de un grupo de pilotos tan competitivo.

En las dos temporadas pasadas, el siempre al límite Gino Rea ha acabado en 6º puesto en esta serie, primero con Honda y la temporada pasada sobre una MV Agusta. Ahora ha fichado para el equipo italiano GoEleven Kawasaki, y busca mejorar la temporada pasada, donde cosechó tres puestos de podio.

En la otra parte del garaje se encuentra el campeón de Japan Superbike GP2 Kazuki Watanabe, que acabó 3º en lo más alto de la clase Superbike de su país natal la temporada pasada. Es consciente de que será un arduo año de aprendizaje, pero el piloto de 26 años tiene mucha experiencia pilotando a nivel nacional y, además, ha salido 5 veces a nivel Grand Prix.

El equipo español Orelac vuelve con la misma formación por segundo año con las ZX–6Rs actualizadas. El piloto malasio Zulfahmi Khairuddin casi ganó la carrera en su país natal la temporada pasada, pero tuvo que conformarse con un 2º puesto, mientras que él y el piloto español Nacho Calero sufrieron distintos problemas cuando mostraban todo su poderío. La consistencia será la clave para el equipo valenciano.

Otro piloto que monta Kawasaki es Lachlan Epis, sobre una Response RE Racing. Tuvo una temporada de debut complicada en esta clase, pero por lo menos acabó el 2016 y comenzó el 2017 con puntos, que es una buena base para su segundo año.

HONDA Con Ten Kate tomándose un descanso de la World Supersport para concentrarse en su nuevo Fireblade en WorldSBK, el foco de atención con respecto a la CBR600RR esta vez será sobre el equipo británico PTR. Este año vuelve al equipo el piloto francés Jules Cluzel, que fue subcampeón en la serie de 2012 con este equipo. Jules pasó un año en Superbike y acabó entre los 10 primeros antes de volver a World Supersport con MV Agusta. Ya de vuelta en Honda, Jules se puso al día con la moto inmediatamente y se encontraba luchando por la victoria en Australia hasta que se vio envuelto en un accidente ajeno. Tendrá ganas de recuperar el terreno perdido en este circuito,

y sorprendentemente, ¡nunca se ha subido al podio!

PTR competirá con 3 motos esta temporada, donde además de Jules estará el piloto japonés Hikari Okubo, que vuelve para competir una 2ª temporada, y el piloto suizo Robin Mulhauser, que ya se ha subido al podio en Superstock 600 y ha puntuado en Moto2 GP, también probará suerte en la clase más potente de motos de 600cc.

El piloto británico y residente en España Kyle Smith finalizó 5º en las dos últimas temporadas en la ultra competitiva serie, llevándose un primer puesto para Ten Kate en el 2015 y dos victorias para PTR la temporada pasada. Esta temporada, Kyle competirá con el equipo italiano Lorini, el cual ganó una carrera con Ayrton Badovini de piloto en Malasia. La moto es veloz y el piloto de tan solo 25 años Smith también, por lo que esperad buenos resultados.

Junto a Kyle se encuentra el piloto australiano Aiden Wagner, que estará deseando completar una temporada entera sobre una competitiva moto tras unas temporadas interrumpidas en esta clase sobre varias motos.

Tampoco os perdáis a Christian Gamarino sobre la CBR600RR de Evans Bros. El italiano tiene mucha experiencia en esta clase y la Honda dirigida por italianos demostró la temporada pasada que es capaz de propulsar a su piloto a los puestos de podio.

MV AGUSTA El piloto americano P J Jacobsen ha intercambiado su puesto con el ya mencionado Monsieur Cluzel, cambiando su Honda por el prototipo MV Agusta, que ya está mostrando más velocidad esta temporada que la anterior.

Es sorprendente que solo dos de los 13 podios conseguidos por PJ hasta el momento hayan sido victorias, y vendrá con la intención de mejorar esa estadística esta temporada. Él y su F3 675 mostraron una gran velocidad en Australia, pero la suerte no se encontraba del lado del neoyorquino.

Alex Baldolini está preparando su propio MV y lo está haciendo inmaculadamente, tal y como lo testifica su 8º puesto la temporada pasada. Siempre tan consistente y tan veloz, el antiguo piloto de GP buscará mejorar su rendimiento esta temporada. Alex se ha traído a algún talento fresco al equipo para el 2017. Davide Pizzoli solo tiene 17 años, pero adquirió buena experiencia en la Moto3 World Championship hace dos años, y puede que impresione como debutante líder del año. Roberto Rolfo se ha convertido en un incondicional del paddock Superbike tras tantas temporadas, pero nadie se pensó que fuera a tener un año tan escuálido en resultados como el que tuvo en 2016. Desde los primeros momentos de la pretemporada de pruebas de este año, Roby se ha mostrado en buena forma y muy veloz, y animó a todo el paddock y a su equipo Factory Vamag tras pelear duramente para llevarse una brillante victoria en su debut en esta clase en Phillip Island.

YAMAHA La gran noticia para la WorldSSP es la vuelta de Yamaha con dos equipos de prototipos. El fabricante se alzó con el título en 2009, 2011 y 2013, y ha tenido algún que otro éxito desde entonces. Ahora viene con una nueva máquina. El año pasado el piloto finlandés Niki Tuuli disfrutó de 3 carreras como invitado, se marcó 3 segundos puestos y 3 vueltas rápidas sobre su moto Kallio Race System. Ahora, este piloto de 21 años, vuelve para competir la temporada completa, y seguramente será un aspirante al campeonato.

El piloto sudafricano Sheridan Morais ha sido llamado, para su sorpresa, para pilotar junto con Niki en el equipo dirigido por el piloto de World Supersport Vesa Kallio, hermano del piloto de Grand Prix Mika.

Tras un año compitiendo sobre MV Agustas, el equipo italiano GRT ahora vuelve bajo la marca GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team, un nombre que lo describe a la perfección. Federico Caricasulo es un piloto de 20 años altamente valorado que mostró una buena velocidad en Australia y que tiene un futuro muy prometedor por delante. No os perdáis a su precoz y talentoso compañero de equipo: el francés Lucas Mahias, actual Campeón Mundial de Multienduro. El antiguo especialista de 27 años es otro piloto que ha tenido una carrera muy interrumpida en este paddock, pero parece estar listo para cosechar algunos de los bien merecidos frutos. Logró mostrar su potencial y el del nuevo R6 al casi arrebatarle la victoria a Rolfo en Australia.

Anthony West estará presente con su propio R6, con la cual se subió al podio la temporada pasada en Australia, su país natal. West está compitiendo en estos momentos carrera a carrera, pero nunca deja de darlo todo.

TRIUMPH Otro piloto que empezó en 2016 sobre una moto y acabará sobre otra es el antiguo campeón de la British Supersport, Luke Stapleford. Empezó la temporada pasada sobre una Honda, se perdió esta ronda y llegó a Assen posicionándose en la pole sobre una Triumph 675 Daytona, de su país natal y la cual usó para hacerse con el título británico. Los resultados que cosechó el resto de la temporada no fueron los que se esperaba, pero ahora vuelve para competir toda la temporada sobre una nueva Triumph, y esta vez debería de encontrarse más cerca de los puestos de cabeza.

El compañero de equipo de Luke esta temporada será Stefan Hill, que viene del equipo PTR Honda, lo que significa que habrá dos máquinas Profile Racing en la parrilla este 2017.

ESS Esta carrera da el pistoletazo a la segunda temporada de la clase European Supersport Championship, que se encuentra dentro de la serie principal WorldSSP, y está pensada para pilotos y equipos que confinan su actividad competitiva en Europa. Alessandro Zaccone, que compitió sobre una Kawasaki la temporada pasada, empieza esta campaña como firme favorito sobre su prototipo MV Agusta, mientras que PTR Honda ha apostado por la experiencia del piloto japonés Hiromichi Kunikawa.

El piloto holandés Rob Hartog llega de la Superstock 1000 con su equipo Team Hartog – Jenik – Against Cancer Kawasaki, y no os perdáis al equipo italiano RSV Phoenix Suzuki, que competirá con un par de GSX–R600s pilotados por el neozelandés Connor London y el italiano Jacopo Cretaro. WorldSSP

KAWASAKI It had been suggested that the 32-year-old Turkish rider would give up racing at the end of last year to concentrate on coaching and nurturing a whole phalanx of young compatriot riders who he is bringing through the junior series in the World Superbike paddock and further afield. But even though Kenan suffered broken bones in his hand in a pre-season training session off-road accident, racing is not that easy to get out of the blood, especially when you are as fast and as successful as he is. These are Kenan’s racing stats coming here to Aragón… 116 races, 78 podiums, 38 victories (including three at this track!) and those 5 world titles.

Sofuoglu is now into in 3rd season on the Italian Kawasaki Puccetti Racing ZX–6R, the bike on which has been Champion for the past two seasons. The rest of the grid will be hoping that Kenan takes time to get up to speed after his injury, but it would be churlish to think that he will not be racing every bit as hard as he is renowned for.

Manuel Puccetti had brought in promising young compatriot Michael Canducci to partner Kenan, the 19 year old having impressed in the class late last year. But Michael will now race under the banner of the Puccetti squad’s Junior Team and with backing of the Italian series organiser, the FMI.

More recently, both Kenan and Jonathan Rea have persuaded Kawasaki to give a full works chance on the senior Puccetti bike to another 19 year old, Briton Kyle Ryde. After campaigning 3 different makes of machine last year he has found stability this season on one of the most prized middleweight racing bikes in the paddock. Kyle struggled in pre-season testing but gelled with the works supported ZX–6R in time for the race in Australia and showed that he can comfortably race at the front of what is a very competitive field.

For the past two years elbow-scraping Gino Rea has finished 6th overall in the series, firstly with a Honda and last season on an MV Agusta. He now lines up for the Italian GoEleven Kawasaki squad and is looking for an even better year than 2016 when he got on the podium 3 times.

Lining up on the other side of that garage is 2012 Japan Superbike GP2 Champion Kazuki Watanabe, who was also 3rd in the top-flight Superbike class last year in his homeland. He knows it will be a tough learning year, but the 26 year old has plenty of experience in national racing and has had 5 starts at Grand Prix level.

The Spanish Orelac team is back with the same squad for a 2nd year with updated ZX–6R bikes. HONDA With Ten Kate taking a break from World Supersport to concentrate on their new Fireblade in WorldSBK, the focus on the CBR600RR this time around will be with the British PTR squad. This year sees the return to the team of French rider Jules Cluzel who was runner up in the 2012 series for the same team. Jules spent a year in Superbike and finished the year in the top 10 before dipping back into World Supersport with MV Agusta. Now back on the Honda again, Jules was immediately up to speed on the bike and was challenging for victory in Australia before he unfortunately got caught up in someone else’s accident. He will be determined to make up for lost ground here at a track where, remarkably, he has never even been on the podium!

PTR will run 3 bikes this year with Japanese rider Hikari Okubo back for a 2nd season, while Swiss rider Robin Mulhauser, a podium man in Superstock 600 and a points finisher in Moto2 GP, also gets to try his hand in in the most powerful of all the 600cc racing classes.

Spanish-domiciled Briton Kyle Smith has finished 5th for the past two seasons in the ultra-competitive series, taking a victory for Ten Kate in 2015 and two wins for PTR last year. This time around, Kyle will be with the Italian Lorini squad, who themselves had a race win last year with Ayrton Badovini in Malaysia. The bike has speed and so does the still only 25-year-old Smith so expect some strong results.

Alongside Kyle is Australian rider Aiden Wagner who will be looking forward to a full season on a competitive motor cycle after having a stop/start few years on various different bikes in this class.

Also look out for Christian Gamarino on the Evans Bros CBR600RR. The Italian has a lot of experience in the class now and the Italian-run Honda showed it could propel its rider to podium placings last year.

Roberto Rolfo has been a stalwart of the Superbike paddock for many seasons now, but few would have expected the Italian to have had such a lean year as he did in 2016. That was mostly down to niggling machine issues, however. From the very start of testing this season, Roby has looked neat and very fast and many in the paddock as well as his entire Factory Vamag team cheered as he took a hard fought and brilliant debut victory in the class at Phillip Island.

YAMAHA The big news for WorldSSP is the return of Yamaha with two works-backed squads. The manufacturer took the title in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and has had sporadic success since then, and now has a new bike to show. Last year young Finnish rider Niki Tuuli had 3 wildcard rides, took 3 runner-up spots and 3 fastest laps on his Kallio Race System bike. This time the 21-year-old is back for a full season and will surely be a contender.

South African Sheridan Morais gets a surprise call up to partner Niki in the team run by former World Supersport rider Vesa Kallio who is the brother of Grand Prix rider, Mika.

After a year running MV Agustas the Italian GRT team now returns branded as the GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team, which describes everything perfectly. Federico Caricasulo is a highly rated 20 year old who won brilliantly in Thailand and has a great future ahead. Look out for his precociously talented teammate, though: Frenchman Lucas Mahias, the current World Endurance Rider Champion. The 27-year-old former stuntman is another who has had a stop-start career so far in this paddock but looks set to reap some much-deserved rewards. He showed his and the new R6’s potential by almost beating Rolfo to the line in Australia.

Anthony West will be here on his self-run R6, the bike on which he podiumed at home in Australia. West is running very much on a race-by-race basis at the moment but he never ceases to give it his all.

63 ZULFAHMI KHAIRUDDIN

TRIUMPH Another to start 2016 on one bike and end up on another is former British Supersport Champion Luke Stapleford. He started last year on a Honda, missed this round and then arrived at Assen on the home-run Triumph 675 Daytona he used to secure his British title and popped it onto pole. The results for the rest of the season didn’t work out the way he planned but he is back for a full season on a new Triumph and should be much nearer the front.

Luke has a team mate this year in Stefan Hill who moves over from the PTR Honda squad meaning there will be two Profile Racing machines on the grid in 2017.

This race sees that start of the second season of the European Supersport Championship class within the main WorldSSP series for riders and teams confining their racing to the Europe. Alessandro Zaccone, who raced a Kawasaki last year, starts this campaign as firm favourite on his works MV Agusta, while PTR Honda have gone for experience with Japanese rider Hiromichi Kunikawa.

Dutch rider Rob Hartog moves over from Superstock 1000 with his Team Hartog – Jenik – Against Cancer Kawasaki squad, while look out for the Italian RSV Phoenix Suzuki team who will be campaigning a brace of GSX–R600s for New Zealand rider Connor London and Italian Jacopo Cretaro. WorldSSP
