SBEM-VINDO

WELCOME

Welcome to the WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal, once again held in he northern and central regions of the country, between the 11th and 14th of May.

Following the success of previous years, the 56th edition of the Rally Portugal, included in one of the main championships in the world of motorsport – World Rally Championship (WRC) – will certainly be the sporting and touristic event which will contribute the most to the positioning of the country as a tourist destination and to the cohesion of the territory.

After the success of the last year’s introduction of a new era of cars in the WRC, with the more eco-friendly hybrid Rally1 cars which combine a 100W electric motor with the internal combustion engine working with a sustainable fuel, seeking to create the conditions to enter a new era of cleaner and more sustainable Rallies. With the headquarters at Exponor, in Matosinhos, the Automóvel Club de Portugal, has, yet again, elected Coimbra as the starting point of the rally, with the traditional Ceremonial Start and Figueira da Foz will held a Super Special Stage on Friday.

The WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal – 2022 had an excellent impact on promoting the Image of Portugal through the Media at an international level with a total broadcast time of 894h30m, growing 18.7% compared to the 2021 edition, and an accumulated audience of over 59,488 million viewers. This dimension is very relevant in absolute terms and, simultaneously, of the country’s extreme promotional efficiency in pursuing the 2027 Tourism Strategy, with the event placing in four strategic markets in its Top 9 audiences (France, United Kingdom, France and Scandinavia ), three growth markets (Italy, Belgium and Poland), also reaching betting markets (USA) and selective performance markets (USA).

As a whole, the volume and characteristics of the exposure through TV, online media and the press, allowed the WRC Rally de Portugal 2022 to generate an Advertising Equivalent Value amount of 77,741,339 euros for the country, mainly influenced by the broadcast time and accumulated audience (TV), and the increasing weight of digital channels.

In addition to the full coverage of the race by the WRC Promotor, the 2023 edition of the WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal has already secured five live international television broadcasts during the four days of competition. The WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal is eligible for the World Rally Championship with the Rally 1 cars, for the

WRC2 championship with the Rally2 cars and also, like last year’s for the Peugeot Rally Cup Iberica with the Peugeot 208 Rally4.

The rally is also eligible for the Portuguese Rally Championship. A word of appreciation is due to all the Municipalities involved in the itinerary of the event and for the essential support of our sponsors – Turismo de Portugal, Turismo do Porto e Norte, Turismo do Centro, as well as Vodafone, BP, Hertz, KontraProduções, Via Verde – and a special recognition to the various entities involved in the safety of the rally, without them it will be impossible to run it: Guarda Nacional Republicana, Polícia de Segurança Pública, Proteção Civil and INEM. According to the Environmental Certification Framework, the ACP (Automóvel Club de Portugal), while organiser of the Rally de Portugal has been certified since 2017 with the accreditation Achievement of Excellence by the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile).

The Portuguese National Olympic Committee elected, in 2019, the WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal as the first case of environmental sustainability success in Motorsport, through his environmental accreditation program. The Automóvel Club de Portugal is committed to the FIA Sustainability Program in order to proceed with the improvement work and minimize the environmental impact of the event, continuing the implementation of the necessary measures which have resulted in this level accreditation.

Last but not the least, a reference to a very relevant issue for the success of event: the spectators safety. The huge popular enthusiasm stirred by the Rally Portugal should always be an added value to national sport and tourism. Only with the commitment of all the WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal will be crowned with success.

CRAIG BREEN A PAIXÃO ATRÁS DO VOLANTE

Obrigado, Craig.

CRAIG BREEN

THE PASSION BEHIND THE WHEEL

The Vodafone Rally de Portugal community praises the passion and joy that Craig Breen has always shown, for rallying, the sport that unites us and with so many fans in Portugal.

The Irish driver was, from the very first kilometers at the wheel of a rally car, the paradigm of what it is loving and living the sport. Be it in a stage or was at the service park, Craig Breen always carried with him an aura of enthusiasm, pleasure, and dedication to rallying, whether in a round of the World Rally Championship, such as the Vodafone Rally de Portugal, or in a smaller event. After all, what counted was fulfilling the distance in the

shortest possible time and offer the greatest possible show to all those who attended the rally.

Thanks, Craig.

EQUILIBRIUM AND EMOTION

The Vodafone Rally de Portugal is the fifth race out of 13 of the 2023 World Rally Championship.

At a time when almost a quarter of this year’s calendar is fulfilled, the round organized by the Automóvel Club de Portugal will be the scene of a diabolical clash between several drivers and cars of various brands, but with emphasis on five. The top five crews in the World Championship standings are Sébastien Ogier/Vincent Landais, Elfyn Evans/Scott Martin, Kalle Rovanpera/ Joanne Halttunen, Ött Tanak/Martin Järveoja and Thierry Neuville/Martin Wydaeghe. They are separated by only 11 points and the top two are even tied for the lead. However, that is something which is about to change, as Ogier won’t be participating. A fact which should affect the expected competitiveness of the Portuguese round.

Toyota remains the strongest manufacturer in the WRC, but Ford and Hyundai want to meddle in this quasi-monopoly already in Portugal. Ott Tanak, who this year competes at the wheel of a Puma prepared by M-Sport, who already won in 2023 at Rally Sweden. The Estonian likes the Portuguese stages and knows that if he wins, he can jump to the command of the championship. This would leave Malcolm Wilson (owner of M-Sport) beaming.

On the other hand, Hyundai has also shown that it has the speed and ability to win rallies again. The Korean

team failed to dedicate the much-desired triumph to Craig Breen at the Rally Croatia, but wants to win in Portugal to be able to pay tribute to its former driver.

In addition, the team currently has Esapekka Lappi gaining momentum and the fast and veteran Thierry Neuville as well as Daniel Sordo.

Among those registered for the Vodafone Rally de Portugal, there are three drivers who have already won past editions and present themselves, in 2023, as candidates for victory. The first is Sébastien Ogier. The second is Ott Tanak who seeks this year to repeat the feat achieved in 2019. Finally, Kalle Rovanperä must be taken into account. The young Finn is the winner of the 2022 edition and the current World Champion.

In addition to the headliners, it is expected that the Vodafone Rally de Portugal will have many more reasons for interest. One will be to understand the performance of drivers who, usually, orbit around the biggest names in the sport. At Toyota, for example, Takamoto Katsuto.

The Japanese has already shown that he can be very fast and relies on the strong structure led by Tommi Makinen to support him.

WRC 2

MAGO DO ASFALTO PROCURA

2

ASPHALT WIZARD SEEKS TO DOMINATE IN PORTUGAL

The WRC2 is being dominated by Yohan Rossel who, having completed the first four rounds of the championship, already has two victories under his belt.

The French driver, who drives a Citroën C3, was the strongest in the two asphalt rounds of the year, Monte Carlo (which is a very specific rally because of the ice and snow) and Croatia. Emil Lindholm, in Skoda Fabia, is second in WRC2, result of a very consistent performance at the beginning of the season. The Finn has yet to win but, in the three events in which he has participated, he has achieved two podiums and a seventh place. Oliver Solberg is still trying to follow his father’s footsteps and for now is third in WRC2. The Norwegian was in Croatia where he focused on adding kilometres, only. He did not choose this event to score in the championship and arrives in Portugal with much higher confidence levels. Solberg hopes to make the most of his Fabia Rally2 and equal Rossel in number of wins, having already won in Sweden.

Also noteworthy, Nikolay Gryazin, who aspires to reach the victory after being second in the two rallies he has competed, Monte Carlo and Croatia, and for Gus Greensmith. The Briton went down a notch in 2023 and

swapped the Ford Puma WRC for a Skoda Fabia Rally2, but he can’t complain. On his debut, at Rally Mexico, he won. It remains to be seen if the English is capable of being as competitive on the Portuguese gravel as he was on Mexican.

The WRC2 in 2023 is comprised mostly of European teams. Among the top ten of the championship, only Bolivian Marco Bulacia prevents the Europeans from monopolizing the classification. Despite this, everything indicates that it will be the drivers from the Old Continent who will discuss the top positions of the WRC2 at the Vodafone Rally de Portugal.

WRC 3 DOMINGUEZ IN THE COMPETITION’S CROSSHAIRS

The WRC3 competition has as its main attraction at the Vodafone Rally de Portugal the fact that Diego Dominguez is the man to beat.

Unlike the WRC and WRC2, where European crews dominate, in WRC3 it is a Paraguayan who is at the front. In this championship the cars are all the same - Ford Fiesta - and, after the first four races, Dominguez leads with nine points ahead of the second and third placed, William Creighton and Tom Ressonnet.

The rallies have been quite disputed, but everything indicates that, in Portugal, it will not only be the virtuosity of the riders that will prevail. Given the signs of the

events that opened the season, it will be very important to preserve the mechanics for the teams to be successful. Thus, more than going fast and forward, it is necessary to manage the cars so that the lack of reliability does not jeopardize a good result.

Everything indicates that the 2023 edition of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal will have many interesting elements as far as WRC3 competition is concerned. The leader might have already a nine point advantage, but the following four are separated by only three points Since no one will wants to lose ground, it will be necessary to do everything possible to stop Dominguez from getting much further ahead.
