eja muito bem-vindo à 53ª edição do Rally de Portugal, disputada entre 30 de maio e 2 de junho de 2019, no Norte e Centro do País.

O Automóvel Club de Portugal decidiu levar a Coimbra o WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal, cidade que será o palco da Cerimónia de Partida. O espetáculo do Rally terá lugar na zona da Porta Férrea, dando a possibilidade, sobretudo aos alunos da Universidade, de verem em primeira mão os fantásticos carros que participam na etapa nacional do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis.

Este ano, a prova vai também passar pelos memoráveis troços da Lousã, Góis e Arganil. Na sequência da dupla passagem por essas classificativas, onde se escreveram grandes páginas da história do Rally de Portugal, o primeiro dia termina com a única Super Especial do Rally, que volta a disputar-se no Eurocircuito de Lousada.

Uma edição do Vodafone Rally de Portugal com muitas estreias, mas também a manutenção essencial da base operacional da prova na Exponor, em Matosinhos, e a permanência no programa da maioria das muito competitivas classificativas do Norte.

Assim, o dia de sábado apresenta também algumas alterações, desde logo a classificativa de Vieira de Minho que ganha cerca de 4 km na parte inicial. Os troços de Cabeceiras de Basto e Amarante permanecem inalterados. Depois das duas passagens por estas três classificativas, o segundo dia termina com mais uma estreia: a Gaia Street Stage. Com partida na zona do Cais de Gaia e 2,25 km de extensão, esta classificativa promete levar muita emoção e adrenalina ao público no coração da cidade ribeirinha.

Fafe continua a ser o prato forte do último dia de competição, com a segunda passagem em formato de Power Stage. Montim conta com duas passagens, enquanto Luílhas se disputa uma única vez. A cerimónia de pódio final acontece junto

ao mar, em Matosinhos, para gáudio dos milhares de fãs da etapa portuguesa.

A evolução dos carros e as alterações das equipas, estas últimas com um alinhamento profundamente alterado, são também novidades de peso desta edição e que seguramente vão proporcionar emoções acrescidas aos adeptos do WRC. As alterações no WRC 2, com a divisão em duas categorias - Pro, reservada às viaturas R5 das equipas oficiais e a “normal”, reservada aos privados - prometem também novos motivos de interesse a uma competição já de si emocionante.

O Vodafone Rally de Portugal permanece no calendário do Campeonato de Portugal de Ralis e da Peugeot Rally Cup Ibérica.

Uma palavra de agradecimento para o indispensável apoio dos patrocinadores Vodafone, BP, Hertz e Skoda. Bem como para o empenho e esforço das câmaras municipais de Amarante, Arganil, Cabeceiras de Basto, Coimbra, Fafe, Góis, Lousã, Lousada, Matosinhos, Mondim de Basto, Paredes, Vieira do Minho e Vila Nova de Gaia.

O Rally conta com o envolvimento do Turismo do Porto e Norte e agora também com o apoio do Turismo do Centro.

Por último, um tema fundamental para o sucesso da nossa prova do Mundial de Ralis: a segurança. O enorme entusiasmo que rodeia esta competição deve ser uma imagem de marca do desporto e do turismo nacionais.

W

elcome to the 53rd Vodafone Rally de Portugal, held between May 30th and June 2nd, on the North and Centre of the Country.

The Automóvel Club de Portugal has decided to take the WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal to Coimbra, city in which the Ceremonial Start will be held. The show will take place in the Porta Férrea area, offering the students the possibility of witnessing first hand the cars participating on the national round of the World Rally Championship.

This year the event will also run through the memorable Lousã, Góis and Arganil stages. After a double loop over these tests, in which great pages of the Rally’s history were written, the first day will end in Lousada’s Eurocicuito with the sole Super Special of the Rally.

A Vodafone Rally de Portugal with lots of changes, but also with Exponor, in Matosinhos, remaining as the Rally’s headquarters. At the same time, the majority of the very competitive stages of the North of the country remain on the Rally’s programme.

Therefor, saturday also presents a few changes, starting with the Vieira do Minho test, roughly 4 km longer at the start. The Cabeceiras de Basto and Amarante stages remain the same. After the double loop, the second day ends with another first: the Gaia Street Stage. Starting at the Cais de Gaia and with a length of 2,25 km, the stage should bring lots of adrenaline to the fans all over the city’s downtown.

The Fafe stage continues to be the main test of the Rally’s last day, Sunday, with the second passage held as Power Stage. Montim will be run twice, while Luílhas will see the WRC action just once. The podium ceremony will take place by the sea, in Matosinhos, for the joy of all the fans.

The evolution of the cars and teams changes, the later with great line-up changes, are other novelties in this year’s edition and will surely offer extra thrills to the WRC fans.

The changes to the WRC 2, with the split into two categories – Pro, reserved to R5 cars from official teams, and the “normal” one, reserved to private entrants – will bring added interest to an already exciting competition.

The Vodafone Rally de Portugal remains on the Portugal Rally Championship, as well as on the Peugeot Rally Cup Ibéria.

A word of appreciation for the essential support of the sponsors – Vodafone, BP, Hertz, and Skoda. Likewise, a recognition for the commitment and effort of the municipalities of Amarante, Arganil, Cabeceiras de Basto, Coimbra, Fafe, Góis, Lousã, Lousada, Matosinhos, Mondim de Basto, Paredes, Vieira do Minho e Vila Nova de Gaia.

This edition of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal will also count with the involvement of the Turismo Porto e Norte, and now also with the support of the Turismo do Centro.

At last but not least, a very relevant issue to the success of the Rally de Portugal: the safety of the event and, particularly, the safety of spectators. The huge popular enthusiasm stirred by the Rally de Portugal should always be an added value to national sport and tourism.

Aquele que é um dos ralis fundadores do WRC e que já foi considerado cinco vezes o “Melhor Rali do Mundo”, tem como pano de fundo a história e a paisagem de Portugal, num esforço coletivo das Entidades Regionais de Turismo, Turismo Portugal e dos Municípios, comprometidos com os resultados de anos anteriores, recebendo a visita de mais de 1 milhão de adeptos, tendo um impacto mediático bem acima das mil horas por edição, e gerando 138 milhões de euros, 29 milhões dos quais em impostos.

One of the founding rallies of the WRC, and which has been already considered five times as the “Best Rally in the World”, has as background, the history and landscape of Portugal, in a collective effort of the Regional Entities of Tourism, Tourism of Portugal and the Municipalities, committed by the results of previous years, receiving the visit of more than 1 million fans, achieving a media impact way above the thousand hours per edition, generating 138 million euros, 29 million of which in taxes.

POLÍTICA AMBIENTAL DO VODAFONE RALLY DE PORTUGAL

VODAFONE RALLY DE PORTUGAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

No âmbito do Quadro de Certificação Ambiental FIA, o Automóvel Club de Portugal, enquanto organizador do Vodafone Rally de Portugal, irá enveredar todos os esforços para revalidar a acreditação Achievement of Excellence para o Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis, em 2019.

Within the FIA Environmental Certification Framework, Automóvel Club de Portugal, as organizer of Vodafone Rally de Portugal, will make every effort to revalidate the Achievement of Excellence accreditation for the World Rally Championship in 2019.

É objetivo da organização continuar a melhorar o trabalho no sentido de minimizar o impacte ambiental do evento, prosseguindo e alargando a implementaçãodemedidasemconformidadecomoprogramadesustentabilidade da FIA. Sendo uma das provas do WRC com mais espectadores, o Vodafone Rally de Portugal procura constituir um exemplo em termos de política ambiental quer a nível nacional quer em termos internacionais.

Neste contexto, a organização vai continuar o seu trabalho de parceria com o Ministério do Ambiente, através da Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente, de forma a reduzir os impactos ambientais causados pela prova. Assim, o Vodafone Rally de Portugal irá, de forma consciente, levar a cabo todos os esforços para que o impacto ambiental seja minimizado colocando em prática as seguintes ações: a) Respeitar todas as leis e regulações ambientais e outros requisitos, bem como o Quadro de Certificação Ambiental da FIA. b) Divulgar e promover o conhecimento ambiental junto dos diferentes agentes (organização, pilotos e todas as equipas envolvidas, e espectadores); c) Levar em linha de conta o trabalho ambiental e o impacte ambiental na escolha de parceiros e fornecedores e procurar produtos e serviços que garantam um bom desempenho ambiental; e) Reduzir, tanto quanto possível, o impacte ambiental no que respeita aos transportes, incentivando o Car Pooling e o Car Sharing, bem como a utilização de transportes públicos ou outros; f) Preferir, sempre que possível, fontes de energia renováveis; g) Continuar a implementar medidas e estabelecer parcerias para aumentar e melhorar a recolha seletiva do lixo, bem como a eliminação correta e adequada do mesmo; h) Fomentar e melhorar as nossas responsabilidades ambientais com base em tarefas estruturadas e planeadas; i) Envolver todas as autoridades locais das zonas de passagem do rali. j) Continuar a reduzir ao máximo o número de documentos impressos em papel, privilegiando a utilização e consulta de documentos em formatos digitais; k) Fomentar a redução do uso de plástico e de produtos descartáveis, dando preferência a produtos recicláveis e reutilizáveis; l) Fomentar o uso de água da rede pública, que em Portugal é de elevada qualidade.

It is the organization’s aim to continue to improve work to minimize the environmental impact of the event by continuing and extending the implementation of measures in accordance with the FIA’s sustainability program.

As one of the WRC events with more spectators, Vodafone Rally de Portugal seeks to set an example in terms of environmental policy both nationally and internationally. In this context, the organization will continue its work in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, through the Portuguese Environment Agency, to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the event. Thus, Vodafone Rally of Portugal will consciously make every effort to minimize the environmental impact by putting into practice the following actions: a) Respect all environmental laws and regulations and other requirements, as well as the FIA Environmental Certification Framework. b) Disseminate and promote environmental awareness among the different agents (organization, drivers and all teams involved, and spectators); c) Consider environmental work and environmental impact in choosing partners and suppliers and look for products and services that guarantee a good environmental performance; e) Reduce, as far as possible, the environmental impact regarding transport by encouraging Car Pooling and Car Sharing as well as the use of public or other transport; f) Prefer, whenever possible, renewable energy sources; g) Continue to implement measures and establish partnerships to increase and improve the selective collection of waste as well as the correct and appropriate disposal of waste; h) To promote and improve our environmental responsibilities based on structured and planned tasks; i) Involve all local authorities in the rally crossing areas. j) Continue to reduce the maximum number of paper documents by giving priority to the use and consultation of documents in digital formats; k) Encourage the reduction of the use of plastic and disposable products, giving preference to recyclable and reusable products; l) Promote the use of public water, which in Portugal is of high quality.

Ogier quer “isolar-se” na história

O

atual Campeão do Mundo de Ralis, Sébastien Ogier, chega ao Vodafone Rally de Portugal na luta pela conquista de novo título mundial mas tem a possibilidade de inscrever o seu nome em mais um feito único na história do WRC. O piloto da Citroën já venceu a prova do Automóvel Club de Portugal em cinco ocasiões (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 e 2017), tantas como o finlandês Marku Allen. Inscrito na edição de 2019, o gaulês pode triunfar pela sexta vez e tornar-se no mais vitorioso da prova portuguesa que se realiza pela 53ª vez em 2019.

Apesar de tudo, Ogier não chega a Portugal com um registo tão dominante como noutros anos. Nesta época já venceu por duas ocasiões, mas tem sentido, em particular por parte de Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) e Ott Tanak (Toyota) forte réplica. Ainda assim, é, de longe, o mais consistente de toda a lista de inscritos – terminou sempre no pódio com exceção da Suécia e chega a Portugal na liderança do campeonato. Tal facto pode ser uma desvantagem para o primeiro da classificação. Vai abrir a estrada no dia de arranque do Vodafone Rally de Portugal.

Nas contas dos candidatos ao título, Ott Tanak apresenta-se como o piloto com mais argumentos para fazer frente a Ogier. De regresso da América do Sul, onde venceu o Rali do Chile, o estónio é segundo do campeonato, a dez pontos do primeiro, e está apostado em encurtar a distância para o rival da Citroën.

Se vencer, Tanak dará à Toyota novo triunfo na ronda lusa. Tal não acontece desde 2002, quando Didier Auriol colocou o Corolla WRC no lugar mais alto do pódio.

Menos bem está Thierry Neuville. O belga da Hyundai caiu de primeiro para terceiro no campeonato depois do abandono no Chile e procura recuperar terreno para os adversários mais bem classificados.

Contudo, a luta promete ter mais um interveniente de peso com o regresso do nove vezes Campeão do Mundo de Ralis a Portugal. Sete ano depois da sua última participação no Vodafone Rally de Portugal, Sébastien Loeb vai estrear-se nos troços do Norte do País com um Hiunday i20.

Ogier trying to make history

T

he World Rally Champion, Sébastien Ogier, arrives at the Vodafone Rally de Portugal fighting for another world title, but has also the possibility of making history in the WRC, yet again. The Citroën driver has already won the Automóvel Club de Portugal’s Rally for five times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017), just like the Finn Marku Allen. One of the favourites in this year’s edition, the French might get his sixth win and become the most successful driver in the Vodafone Rally de Portugal.

However, Ogier is not arriving in Portugal as dominant as in other editions. This season he has already won twice, but his face strong opposition from Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) and Ott Tänak (Toyota). Even so he is, by far, the most consistent driver in all the entry list – he’s been on the podium in all rallies so far, except for Sweden, and arrives in Portugal at the top of the WRC drivers classification. That might be a disadvantage, since he will be opening the roads at the start of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal.

As far as the fight for the championship goes, Ott Tänak presents himself as the driver with the best arguments to make life hard for Ogier. The Estonian is second in the championship after his victory at the Rally Chile, ten points adrift from the leader, and is set to reduce the deficit for Ogier. Should he win, Tänak will be giving Toyota another victory in Portugal. That would also go down on the history books since the make’s last win in Portugal goes back to 2002, when Didier Auriol drove the Corolla WRC to the first place.

Thierry Neuville doesn’t appear to be as strong. The Belgium Hyundai driver lost the lead of the WRC after a huge crash in Chile and will be looking to recover some ground to the top of the classification.

But the fight promises to have another prestigious intervenient. The nine times WRC Champion Sébastien Loeb is making his come back to Portugal seven year after his last participation at the Vodafone Rally de Portugal. The French will be making his debut on the stages of the north of the country with a Hyundai i20.

Leadership up for grabs

Com o líder da classificação Gus Greensmith (Ford - 73 pontos) ausente, a liderança da mais recente categoria criada pela FIA, a WRC2 Pro (reservada a pilotos inscritos no WRC2 pelas equipas de fábrica) vai ser disputada entre Mads Ostberg (Citroën - 68 pts), Lukasz Pieniazek (Ford - 62 pts) e Kalle Rovanpera (Skoda - 61 pts).

Com resultados semelhantes nas provas já disputadas, apostar no vencedor e novo líder da geral não é tarefa fácil. Ostberg é o mais experiente dos três, com duas vitórias este ano e o único que pode dizer que já venceu em Portugal (2012). Pieniazek regressa à competição depois de ter falhado as presenças na Argentina e no Chile e espera repetir os triunfos do México e França, enquanto Rovanpera entra para a sétima ronda do calendário com a motivação em alta, depois do triunfo na prova chilena. Já para Jan Kopecky será a primeira prova do ano, fazendo dupla com Rovanpera na Skoda.

O WRC2 vai estar ao rubro no Vodafone Rally de Portugal. Com 22 inscritos, Benito Guerra é o nome maior do lote na medida em que chega a esta ronda do campeonato na frente da classificação. O mexicano do Skoda Fabia R5 tem 61 pontos, mais 13 do que o segundo classificado, Takamoto Katsuta (Ford). Se os principais pilotos da categoria dizem presente à prova organizada pelo Automóvel Club de Portugal, destaque, também, para a forte presença lusa. Armindo Araújo (bicampeão do Mundo de Grupo N e campeão nacional em título) vai enfrentar os rivais estrangeiros. Prova pontuável para o Mundial, o Vodafone Rally de Portugal também marca pontos para o campeonato português. Aí, Ricardo Teodósio chega na primeira posição.

O algarvio venceu dois dos três ralis já realizados e tem uma vantagem confortável para a concorrência. Ainda assim, sabe que não terá tarefa fácil. Entre os principais adversários, Teodósio tem vários pilotos com títulos já conquistados. Entre os quais, destaque para Armindo Araújo que já venceu o Vodafone Rally de Portugal em três ocasiões. Além do campeão em título, destaque para Bruno Magalhães, no regresso aos ralis nacionais, José Pedro Fontes e Pedro Meireles. Destaque, também, para alguns pilotos que, embora não tenham vencido qualquer campeonato, têm crescido na modalidade e apresentam-se cada vez mais competitivos. É o caso de Miguel Barbosa (Skoda), que é terceiro no campeonato.

The Vodafone Rally de Portugal is also a points scoring round of the Portuguese Rally Championship. A competition in which Ricardo Teodósio is the leader. The Algarve born driver has won two of the three events so far and has a comfortable advantage over the competition. Even so, he knows the task ahead is not an easy one. Amongst the main rivals, Teodósio has several Champions to beat. Amongst them, Armindo Araújo, who has won the Vodafone Rally de Portugal for three times. But he’s not the only one.

Bruno Magalhães is back in the championship, while José Pedro Fontes and Pedro Meireles are names to take into strong consideration. But one can not forget another name. Despite not having win yet this year, Miguel Barbosa, third in the charts, might also have a word to say.

O mundo desconhecido do Vodafone Rally de Portugal

O universo da organização de uma prova do Campeonato do Mundo de ralis, em particular o Vodafone Rally de Portugal, não é infinito. Mas a sua dimensão é impressionante. Se ao longo de quatro dias, os melhores pilotos e máquinas se fazem à estrada para serem os mais rápidos, o Automóvel Club de Portugal há muito que está no terreno para que tudo corra na perfeição.

Os números são muito grandes. Tão grandes que os concorrentes e as viaturas de competição não são mais do que uma minoria.

Para garantir a segurança do evento, o ACP conta com a colaboração das mais diversas autoridades. À cabeça destacam-se os elementos da Guarda Nacional Republica que são mais de 1100. Estes utilizam “apenas” 400 viaturas. Além disso, a Polícia de Segurança Pública também entra em ação, para assegurar o normal funcionamento da prova nos centros urbanos. São 120 agentes e 30 viaturas.

O desporto motorizado implica riscos. Para que a segurança de pilotos e público esteja garantida, o INEM e os bombeiros também estão muito ativos. Além do número de técnicos devidamente preparados, estão disponíveis mais de 20 viaturas de emergência médica, quase de 50

ambulâncias, 23 viaturas de combate a incêndios e 30 carros de desencarceramento.

Nos troços, existem elementos separados por uma distância pré-definida. O ACP vai ter quase 500 pessoas no papel de marshal e dispõe de perto de 300 viaturas para a organização. Há quase três dezenas de reboques e o número de seguranças privados é superior a uma centena. Os números são fastidiosos. E não acabam aqui. Para fazer as marcações dos troços, são utilizadas 22 toneladas de estacas, ou seja, são mais de 20.000 unidades. Para os mais de 300 quilómetros de especiais, há 30 km de rede balizadora.

O Vodafone Rally de Portugal tem sido uma das referências no que respeita à preocupação com o ambiente.

Para isso, volta a apostar em força e disponibiliza 40 mil sacos para a reciclagem.

A tudo isto juntam-se ainda os meses de trabalho na estrada e muitos milhares de quilómetros para que tudo corra na perfeição. É que para escolher os melhores percursos e saber exatamente onde colocar todos os meios são precisas muitas visitas aos vários locais do Rally. Um trabalho que começa praticamente no dia após o final do Rally do ano anterior, mas que arranca a todo o gás cerca de seis meses antes de cada edição.

The Vodafone Rally de Portugal’s unknown world The world behind the organising of a WRC event, in particular the Vodafone Rally de Portugal, is not infinite. But it has a huge dimension. While the best WRC drivers and cars compete during four exciting days, the Automóvel Club de Portugal has been in the road much longer to ensure all runs perfectly.

The numbers are impressive. So impressive, that, by comparison, the participants and their cars are but a minority.

This because, to choose the best routs, and to know where exactly to place all the safety teams, many technical visits are required. A work that starts almost the day after the end of the previous year’s Rally, but which gets into high gear about six months before each edition.

To ensure the events safety, the ACP relies on the cooperation of several authorities. The Guarda Nacional Republicana stand at the top of the list with more than 1,100 personnel. Adding to this a “mere” 400 cars. But they are not the only ones, with the Polícia de Segurança Pública ensuring the normality in the city centres with 120 agents and 30 vehicles.

Motorsports imply risks. To guaranty drivers and spectators are safe, INEM and fire fighters are also on call.

Besides the technicians, there are more than 20 medical emergency vehicles, almost 50 ambulances, 23 fire fighting cars e 30 extrication vehicles.

On the stages, staff is spread at predefined distances.

ACP will have almost 500 people working as marshals and there are about 300 cars at the organiser’s disposal. Towing trucks are almost 30 and the private security personnel is over 100. The numbers are tiring. And they don’t end here. To mark the stages are used 22 tons of stakes, which is another way of saying more than 20,000 stakes. There are also the 30 km of net used to mark part of the 300 km of stages.

And since the Vodafone Rally de Portugal has also a great environmental concern, the ACP uses 40,000 recycling bags.

To all this, one has also to take into consideration the months of work on the road and the thousands
