15 years after the conception of a great dream, here comes the 15th edition of the EDP Porto Marathon!

A paixão pela organização do evento fez desta maratona uma prova emblemática a nível nacional e internacional.

The passion for organizing the event made this marathon an iconic competition at the national and international level.

Desde primeira edição da EDP Maratona do Porto, a 17 de outubro de 2004, então com 317 atletas à partida, o evento tem vindo a registar um crescimento exponencial, sendo neste momento a maior maratona de Portugal.

Since the first edition of the EDP Porto Marathon, on October 2004 ,17, which had 317 athletes at the starting line, the event has experienced exponential growth and is now the largest marathon in Portugal.

Este ano, a Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo escolheu a EDP Maratona do Porto como a prova que irá acolher o Campeonato Nacional de Maratona, o que nos deixa orgulhosos e com a certeza que a EDP Maratona do Porto é um evento com credibilidade reconhecido pelas instituições que dirigem a modalidade em Portugal.

Para além desta novidade, o grau Bronze Label Road Race foi atribuído à EDP Maratona do Porto pela International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). A 15ª edição da EDP Maratona do Porto pertence agora ao calendário oficial da IAAF, uma distinção que a coloca como uma das melhores provas no circuito mundial das maratonas.

A maratona portuense é também a única prova homologada pela IAAF e AIMS para tempos de acesso a campeonatos europeus, do mundo e jogos olímpicos.

Queremos oferecer aos participantes as melhores condições para realizarem o sonho de completar os 42,195 km num cenário fantástico que une a frente atlântica num percurso rápido e plano. Correr com o calor humano da cidade, que nestes dias se transforma e vive em clima de festa o desporto.

This year, the Portuguese Athletics Federation selected the EDP Porto Marathon as the competition that will host the National Marathon Championship. We are very proud of this recognition of the credibility of the EDP Porto Marathon by the sport›s governing bodies in Portugal.

In addition to this news, the EDP Porto Marathon was also conferred the title of Bronze Label Road Race by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The 15th edition of the EDP Porto Marathon now has a place on the official calendar of the IAAF, a distinction that ranks it as one of the best competitions on the global marathon circuit.

The EDP Porto Marathon is also the only Portuguese competition approved by the IAAF and AIMS for granting qualifying times to European and worldwide championships and Olympic games.

We want to offer participants the best conditions to achieve their dreams of completing 42.195 km in a fantastic scenario that unites the Atlantic front in a fast and flat course. Running alongside the human warmth of the city, which is transformed by and celebrates the sport during these days.

This event represents sustained growth in the organization, the athletes, the three municipalities involved–Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia–and in the sponsors and partners who always believed in this project. Thank you for your support.

Quero dar as boas vindas a todos quantos participam em mais uma edição, a 15ª, da Maratona do Porto.

I would like to welcome everyone taking part in one more year–the 15th–of the Porto Marathon.

Uma prova que tem lugar de destaque no calendário internacional, este ano com o selo de qualidade da IAAF e o Campeonato Nacional da Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo.

As evidence that it holds a distinctive position on the international calendar, this year it received the seal of quality from the IAAF and the National Championship from the Portuguese Athletics Federation.

Simultaneamente é um acontecimento desportivo que não esquece a família e quem deseja uma prática desportiva menos extensa. A ‘Family Race’ de 15 km e a Mini-Maratona de 6 km cumprem estes objetivos e completam a abrangência que se pretende numa organização desta grandeza: convidar todos os cidadãos, dos mais jovens aos menos jovens, a praticar atividade física e desporto.

São eventos com esta identidade que honram a cidade, a modalidade de Atletismo e, por consequência, o panorama dos eventos internacionais que organizamos.

Esta revista é um importante contributo pelas informações técnicas que disponibiliza aos participantes e que muito contribuem para o sucesso do mesmo.

Devo por isso expressar a minha gratidão a todos quantos se envolvem nesta organização há 15 anos, com especial referência à Runporto, às Câmaras Municipais envolvidas assim como a todos os parceiros.

Por este conjunto de razões, mas também pelo facto da Maratona do Porto ser já um forte motivo para quem nos visita, gostaria de desejar a todos os maiores sucessos desportivos e organizativos para mais esta 15ª edição da Maratona do Porto.

Foi com muito prazer que pude acompanhar e constatar o ambiente e a vibração desta grande manifestação desportiva da cidade e do País, pelo que conto estar presente nesta 15ª edição de 2018!

At the same time, it is a sporting event that is inclusive of families and those looking for a less intensive sport. The 15 km Family Race and the 6 km Mini Marathon meet these objectives and achieve the desired reach for a competition of this size: to invite everyone, from the youngest to the not-so-young, to take part in physical and sports activities.

It’s events like these that honor the city, the sport of athletics and, consequently, the panorama of international events that we organize.

This publication is important for the technical information it provides to participants, greatly contributing to the success of the same.

I am very grateful to everyone who has been involved in organizing this event over the last 15 years, especially Runporto, the involved city councils and all the partners.

For all these reasons, and because the Porto Marathon is already a major draw for visitors, I would like to wish everyone, participants and organizers, the greatest success in this 15th Porto Marathon It was with great pleasure that I was able to attend and witness the atmosphere and excitement of past editions of this great sports event for Porto and Portugal, so I plan on being present for the 15th edition in 2018!

Rui Moreira Presidente da Câmara Municipal do Porto Mayor of Porto O desporto tem um papel incontornável na vida das cidades, não só por ser um instrumento vital na melhoria da qualidade de vida dos seus cidadãos, como, também, por se constituir hoje – e cada vez mais – como uma extraordinária ferramenta de inclusão social, pela forma como consegue unir pessoas de diferentes origens, culturas, gerações e estratos.

De facto, esta capacidade de atrair, integrar e aproximar os cidadãos e as suas comunidades prova que o desporto é uma ferramenta poderosa de mudança social, imprescindível na construção de uma cidade que se quer cada vez mais humana, inclusiva, plural, moderna e sustentável.

Os eventos desportivos que temos vindo a apoiar e a realizar no espaço público da nossa cidade constituem excelentes oportunidades para potenciar e estimular esta relação entre o cidadão e a prática desportiva, bastando pensar nos dias de treino que exigem a preparação de uma prova como a Maratona do Porto.

Poderíamos, ainda, refletir no crescimento exponencial deste evento, que na sua primeira edição, em 2004, juntou pouco mais de 300 atletas à partida, mas que na sua última edição superou já os 6.000, em representação de quase 70 nacionalidades. E este número diz apenas respeito aos inscritos na clássica distância de 42,195 metros, uma vez que, no conjunto das três vertentes (Maratona, Family Race e Fun Race), a participação excedeu as 15 mil pessoas.

São números impressionantes e que consolidam a Maratona do Porto não só como a maior prova do género em Portugal, como também um dos acontecimentos que mais diretamente contribuem para o crescente entusiasmo da população pela prática desta modalidade e, consequentemente, pela adoção de hábitos de vida saudáveis.

Felicito, pois, todos quantos aceitaram o desafio de participar, uma vez mais, neste evento único que perpassa e une as três cidades (Porto, Matosinhos e Vila Nova de Gaia) que compõem a Frente Atlântica do Porto, num cenário difícil de igualar em qualquer outra parte do mundo.

Sports play an essential role in the life of cities, not only as a vital instrument in improving citizens› quality of life, but also because they increasingly constitute an extraordinary tool for social inclusion, uniting people from different origins, cultures, generations and classes.

In fact, this ability to attract, integrate and bring people and communities together proves that sports are a powerful tool for social change, fundamental in building cities that are ever more human, inclusive, plural, modern and sustainable.

The sporting events that we have been supporting and holding in Porto’s public spaces constitute excellent opportunities to strengthen and stimulate this relationship between the citizen and the practice of sports, as is evidenced by the sheer amount of training required to prepare for a competition such as the Porto Marathon.

We might also reflect on the exponential growth of this event, which had just over 300 athletes at the starting line for the first edition in 2004; last year, in 2017, there were over 6,000 athletes representing nearly 70 nationalities. And this number refers only to those registered to run the classic distance of 42,195 meters—overall participation in all three events (Marathon, Family Race and Fun Race) exceeded 15 thousand people.

These are impressive numbers that establish the Porto Marathon as not only the largest competition in Portugal, but one of the events that most directly contributes to the growing enthusiasm for the sport of running and, consequently, for adopting healthy life habits.

So, I congratulate all those who have accepted the challenge of participating once again in this unique event that runs through and unites the three cities (Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia) that make up the Atlantic Front of Porto, against a backdrop that would be difficult to match in any other part of the world.

Aproveito igualmente para felicitar a Runporto por mais esta iniciativa e pelo empenho e profissionalismo que sempre empresta à sua organização. Que esta edição seja mais uma grande festa do desporto.

Luísa Salgueiro Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos Mayor of Matosinhos Longe vão os tempos, felizmente, em que os municípios procuravam afirmar-se de costas voltadas uns para os outros, muitas vezes duplicando desnecessariamente equipamentos (e investimentos) que faria mais sentido serem concertados e partilhados. O paradigma mudou e a Maratona do Porto é um excelente exemplo disso.

Matosinhos, Gaia e o Porto têm, de há cinco anos para cá, apostado no trabalho conjunto e na organização partilhada de iniciativas e eventos que, pela sua dimensão e escala, efetivamente ultrapassam as fronteiras formais dos concelhos, dirigindo-se, antes, a um público mais vasto e metropolitano. Temo-lo feito em domínios como a dança, a arquitetura ou o desporto, mas também, numa rede mais alargada, em domínios tão decisivos para a qualidade de vida das nossas cidades como os transportes públicos, em que o planeamento estratégico tem, de facto, de ser não apenas supramunicipal, mas também suprapolítico e livres das contingências dos ciclos eleitorais, da mesquinhez paroquial ou das amarras do curto prazo.

Esta décima quinta edição da maratona não deve, pois, ser vista apenas como um evento cuja organização e percurso é partilhada por diferentes municípios. Constituindo um estímulo à prática do exercício físico e à adoção de comportamentos mais saudáveis, esta prova é também, e sobretudo, uma forma de contribuir para a melhor qualidade de vida da população, cujos efeitos se notarão amanhã, decerto, mas também no decurso dos anos que aí virão.

Gone are the days, fortunately, when municipalities sought to make a name for themselves by turning their backs on each other, often unnecessarily duplicating equipment (and investments) that would have made more sense being coordinated and shared.

The paradigm has shifted and the Porto Marathon is an excellent example of this.

Over the past five years, Matosinhos, Gaia and Porto have invested in working together and in the shared organization of initiatives and events that, due to their size and scale, actually exceeded the formal frontiers of the municipalities. Instead, they have aimed at a broader and more metropolitan audience. We have done this in areas such as dance, architecture and sports, but also in a wider network of areas that are so decisive to the quality of life of our cities, such as public transportation, in which strategic planning must, in fact, rise above parochial narrow-mindedness or shortterm bonds.

This fifteenth edition of the marathon should not, therefore, be seen only as an event whose organization and course is shared by different municipalities. This competition stimulates physical exercise and the adoption of healthier behaviors, which means it is also, above all, a means of contributing to improving peoples’ quality of life. These effects will certainly be seen not only tomorrow, but also over the coming years.

Estamos perante uma prova de nível internacional, de inabalável notoriedade e que se tornou, ao longo de todas as edições, num dos acontecimentos que melhor tem sabido colocar a região no mapa desportivo, mostrando a nossa cidade, a nossa região e as nossas potencialidades a quem nos visita.

Vila Nova de Gaia’s connection with the 15th edition of the EDP Porto Marathon is now substantial. This is an international-level competition with an unshakable reputation, having become one of the main events to put this region on the sports map, displaying our city, our region and our potential to all those who visit.

Aos atletas deixo a minha admiração. Aos que correm pelo desporto, por amor à camisola ou pelo convívio salutar entre participantes, o meu «obrigado» por serem um exemplo e por nos ajudarem a fazer com que esta prova seja, a cada ano que passa, única e singular à sua maneira. Acredito que esta corrida continuará a ser uma prova incontornável no calendário do atletismo e será sempre uma meta de muitos atletas que trabalham arduamente, ao longo do ano, para conseguirem superar os seus objetivos pessoais.

To the athletes, I express my admiration. To those who run for sport, for the love of running or for the healthy camaraderie shared between participants, I would like to say thank you, for setting an example and for helping us make this race unique and special in its own way, year after year. I believe that this run will continue to be an important race on the world athletics calendar and will always be a goal for many athletes who work hard throughout the year to achieve their personal objectives.

15 years organizing an international marathon like yours is simply exceptional, and the value of this achievement is greater when it has been managed even thru one of the worst economic crisis we have been suffering in Europe. My deepest congratulations to the whole organization team.

As maratonas são exercícios difíceis, onde os atletas devem definir os seus planos de acordo com os desejos de desempenho e manter a força física e mental em direção ao seu objetivo. É isso que os organizadores também fazem, com a dificuldade adicional de terem de cuidar não apenas de si mesmos, mas também de todos os aspetos que envolvem o evento.

Isto é o que vocês fazem há 15 anos com a vossa maratona, assim como todos nós, trabalhando também para quebrar ambos os recordes da prova, 2:09:51 nos homens e 2:26:58 nas mulheres, o sonho de todos os organizadores; acreditem em mim, vocês tem o conhecimento e a experiência para fazerem o melhor possível para alcançá-lo.

Marathon races are tough exercises where athletes must define their plans in accordance with their performance wishes and keep their physical and mental strength towards their target. This is what organizers also do, with the additional difficulty that they have to take care not only about themselves but also about every single aspect surrounding the event.

This is what you guys do for 15 years at your marathon, and as we all do, working also towards breaking both, men 2:09:51 and women 2:26:58 records, the dream of all organizers; believe me, you have the knowledge and the expertise to make the best possible surrounding to achieve it.

A great marathon in a great city.

A 15ª edição da Maratona do Porto é o resultado do esforço e da competência de uma grande equipa liderada por Jorge Teixeira. Só um evento com a qualidade organizativa da Maratona do Porto pode reunir uma quantidade tão elevada de participantes. A Maratona do Porto tem feito jus à nossa modalidade, uma modalidade de recordes. O máximo de praticantes inscritos tem vindo a ser batido anualmente.

The 15th edition of the Porto Marathon is the result of the effort and expertise of a great group led by Jorge Teixeira. Only an event with the organizational quality of the Porto Marathon could bring together such a large number of participants. The Porto Marathon has lived up to our sport, a sport that has set records. We surpass our maximum participant numbers annually.

Desde a primeira edição, com um registo de 317 atletas inscritos, o número de atletas tem crescido e, também, tem evoluído a qualidade das performances. Estes factos não são alheios à longa tradição da corrida no norte do país, em especial na cidade do Porto.

Since the first edition, when 317 athletes registered, the number of athletes has grown and performance quality has evolved. These facts do not escape the long tradition of running in the North of the country, especially in the city of Porto.

À desinibição de cada vez mais pessoas que decidem correr a sua primeira maratona, não é estranha a tradição de participação nas diversas corridas organizadas pela Runporto.

Muitos terão começado pelas caminhadas, passaram pelas meias-maratonas, tornando lógico este último passo de correr a distância olímpica, mítica, da maratona, os 42,195 Km.

The uninhibited manner in which more and more people have decided to run their first marathon is not foreign to the tradition of participation in the various runs organized by Runporto. Many begin with walks, moving on to half-marathons, then taking the logical next step to running the mythical Olympic distance of 42.195 Km.

Correr esta distância tem um significado que vai muito para além do número de km percorridos. Percorrer esta distância, num evento oficial de maratona, garante a entrada no “clube” restrito daqueles que CONSEGUIRAM repetir o feito inicial do soldado grego Pheidippides.

Running this distance has a significance that extends well beyond the number of kilometers traveled. Traveling this distance in an official marathon event guarantees entry into the restricted “club” of those who have SUCCEEDED in repeating the original achievement of the Greek soldier Pheidippides.

Para além daqueles que, no grupo de elite, lutam pelos lugares de pódio, está a grande massa daqueles que, simplesmente lutam pela superação da distância ou do seu recorde pessoal. Terminar uma maratona coloca a pessoa no clube restrito dos chamados maratonistas. Aqueles que terminam a maratona tornam-se pessoas diferentes. Como afirmei em mensagens anteriores estes são os atletas que “transcendem os seus limites. Abrem novas fronteiras. De algum modo sentem-se únicos. Sentem-se capazes. Percebem que o esforço compensa, resulta. Vivem, na sua mente e no seu corpo, a experiência de transformação. Percebem melhor que não estão confinados aos limites que se auto-impõem”.

Along with those who, in the elite group, fight for spots on the podium, is the great mass of those who simply fight to conquer the distance or their own personal record. Finishing a marathon places someone in the exclusive club of the so-called marathoners. Those who finish a marathon become different people. As I’ve said before, these are the athletes who “transcend their limits. They open new frontiers. In some ways, they feel they are unique. They feel capable. They know the effort is worth it, and brings results. They live, in mind and body, the experience of transformation. They, more than anyone, understand that they are not confined to self-imposed limits”.

Como é usual nas grandes maratonas, nesta edição da Maratona do Porto encontrarse-ão atletas da melhor elite mundial, alguns dos melhores atletas nacionais e, ainda, a grande massa de atletas informais, praticantes da nossa modalidade.

As is usual with great marathons, in this edition of the Porto Marathon you will find some of the world’s most elite athletes, some of the best national athletes, as well as the great mass of informal athletes, practitioners of our sport.

Esta edição da Maratona do Porto foi escolhida pela Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo como palco do Campeonato Nacional de Maratona.

Located in the heart of the city of Porto and on the banks of the Douro river, the Alfândega do Porto Conference Center displays a surprising blend of traditional and modern architecture. In 1994, restoration work on the building began, led by Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the Pritzker prize, who highlighted the unique architecture of the building within the urban landscape of the city.

O principal objetivo do projeto «Egoísmo Positivo» (www.egoismopositivo.com) é o de integrar, através da corrida, pessoas com deficiência no mundo do desporto.

The main objective of the “Egoísmo Positivo” project (www.egoismopositivo.com) is to integrate, through running, people with disabilities into the world of sport.

Em suma, queremos que as pessoas com deficiência possam desfrutar de todas as coisas que as pessoas sem deficiências podem viver numa corrida onde participam amadores e profissionais: nervos antes da corrida, pessoas apoiando, aplausos, gritos, alegria, sofrimento... ou seja, incluí-los numa atividade desportiva que não é exclusiva para eles, mas sim aberta a todas pessoas que queiram participar.

In summary, we want people with disabilities to be able to enjoy all the same things as people without disabilities, in a race where both amateurs and professionals take part: nerves before the race, people supporting them, applause, shouting, joy, suffering, i.e., including them in a sports activity that is not exclusively for them, but open to anyone who wants to take part.

A primeira prova oficial em Portugal foi na “XII Meia Maratona do Porto Sport Zone” que teve lugar a 16 de setembro e a 4 de novembro iremos participar nos 15km da Family Race da “15ª EDP Maratona do Porto”.

Em Portugal queremos ir mais além e, a seu tempo e de forma sustentada, alargar as áreas de atuação do Egoísmo Positivo. Todavia, a corrida será sempre o coração do Egoísmo Positivo e a participação na Maratona do Porto é um marco importante na afirmação do movimento e na sua capacidade de fazer chegar a mensagem de integração a milhares de atletas e apoiantes do atletismo e do running nacional e internacional.

The first official competition in Portugal was the XII Sport Zone Porto Half Marathon which was held on September 16. On November 4, we will take part in the 15km Family Race of the 15th EDP Porto Marathon.

In Portugal, we want to go further, broadening the operating areas of Egoísmo Positivo in due course and in a sustained way. However, running will always be at the heart of Egoísmo Positivo, and our participation in the Porto Marathon is an important milestone in strengthening the movement and its ability to spread the message of integration to thousands of athletes and supporters of athletics and running, both nationally and internationally.

A organização da EDP Maratona do Porto está muito preocupada com a segurança e saúde de todos os participantes. São largas dezenas de pessoas envolvidas no apoio médico, quer durante a prova, quer no final da corrida, junto à meta e logo depois no Posto Médico Avançado (PMA). Os operacionais da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa (CVP), dos Bombeiros Voluntários do Porto e dos Bombeiros Sapadores de Gaia estarão em vários pontos do percurso. A estes juntam-se três equipas médicas (médico e enfermeiro) que, transportadas por experientes motociclistas, tentarão chegar o mais rapidamente possível ao local do sinistrado. Estas estão identificadas com polos que dizem Medical Team. Se as vir passar de modo rápida nas motas, não proteste, colabore: há alguém, a precisar de ajuda rápida. Haverá, assim, uma ajuda médica básica a que se associa a ajuda médica mais diferenciada.

As ambulâncias estarão disponíveis na prova para transporte dos sinistrados para o PMA ou para um hospital diferenciado, no Porto, em Vila Nova de Gaia ou em Matosinhos. Haverão também as ambulâncias de “fecho de prova” que acompanharão os últimos participantes e que serão utilizadas aquando da desistência.

Entretanto, os que querem desistir, e que vão mais à frente, deverão fazê-lo de preferência junto de um posto de abastecimento de água ou de apoio médico. Nestes deverão informar a sua condição de desistente e aguardar transporte se assim o desejarem. Refira-se, no entanto, que nem sempre será possível fazer o transporte no momento que o participante o desejar, pelo que se apela à paciência e à compreensão.

A sua ajuda a) Mais de uma dezena de rádios serão entregues às equipas para facilitar as comunicações, mas, contudo, toda a ajuda adicional na informação e localização do sinistro é bem-vinda. Os postos de abastecimento de água, o polícia, o bombeiro ou o mero assistente da corrida poderão dar uma ajuda.

Para além da solicitação de ajuda médica da organização, deve ser feito contacto também para o INEM (112) nos casos de grande gravidade, como seja a perda de consciência, a desorientação, as alterações do comportamento a indiciarem desidratação ou hiponatremia (à frente esclarecida). b) No caso da inconsciência é importante para quem presta o socorro saber os antecedentes médicos da vítima (doenças, alergias, medicamentos, etc.) e os contactos a estabelecer. Recomenda-se vivamente que esta informação seja escrita no verso do “dorsal”. Lembre-se que se estiver inconsciente não nos poderá ajudar para ser ajudado. c) Entretanto, se encontrar um atleta inconsciente coloque-o em Posição Lateral de Segurança (ver foto), vigie a vítima e peça ajuda. Indique o km de corrida ou um ponto de referência. É normal que o corredor termine a Maratona exausto, pelo que logo que termine a corrida haverá operacionais da CVP disponíveis para ajudar, optando-se pelo transporte na cadeira de rodas sempre que necessário. Depois, ali ao lado, estará o PMA onde os mais necessitados terão à sua disposição um “mini-hospital”, com médicos, enfermeiros e outros colaboradores, apoiados por aparelhos de monitorização dos sinais vitais, onde a primeira abordagem médica e tratamento correspondente pode ser iniciado (soros, reposição do açúcar no sangue, oxigénio, etc.).

The organizers of the EDP Porto Marathon are very concerned with the health and safety of all participants. There are dozens of people helping to provide medical support both during the race and at the end of it, both next to the finish line and just after it at the Advanced Medical Station (AMS). Members of the Portuguese Red Cross, the Porto Volunteer Fire Department and the Gaia Fire Service will be positioned at several points along the course. They will be joined by three medical teams (comprised of a doctor and a nurse) who will be transported by experienced motorcycle drivers to reach the location of any accidents as quickly as possible. They will be identified with polo shirts that read “Medical Team”. If you see them passing by quickly on their motorcycles, don’t complain, collaborate: someone needs help, fast. Basic medical assistance will therefore be supported by more specialized health care.

Ambulances will be standing by at the race to take any injured people to the AMS or to a specialized hospital in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia or Matosinhos. There will also be ambulances to “close the race”, which will follow behind the last runners in the event any of them drops out.

Meanwhile, runners who wish to drop out further ahead should preferably do so at one of the water points or medical assistance stations. Runners should state that they are dropping out and wait for transportation, if they want it. However, we ask participants for their patience and understanding, as it’s not always possible to arrange for transportation at the exact time they want it.

Your assistance a) More than a dozen walkie-talkies are going to be handed out to the teams to make communication easier. However, any additional assistance with reporting and locating incidents will be very welcome. The water stations, police officers, fire fighters and race stewards are all able to provide help. In addition to requesting medical assistance from the organizers, the ambulance service (112) should also be contacted if injuries are very serious, for example, if a runner loses consciousness, is disoriented or demonstrates changes in behavior that suggest dehydration or hyponatremia (explained below). b) It is very important for those assisting an unconscious person to know the victim’s background (illnesses, allergies, medication, etc.) and who should be contacted. It is highly recommended that runners write this information on the back of their running bibs. Remember, if you are unconscious, you will not be able to help us help you. c) If you find an unconscious athlete, place him or her in the Lateral Safety Position (see photo), monitor the victim and seek assistance. Indicate the kilometer marker of the race or a reference point.

Runners are often exhausted at the end of the marathon, so as soon as they finish the race, members of the Portuguese Red Cross will be waiting to help, using wheelchairs if necessary. The AMS will be located just ahead, providing a “mini-hospital” for anyone who needs it, complete with doctors, nurses and other assistants and instruments for monitoring vital signs. Here, an initial medical assessment can be made and relevant treatment can begin (IV fluids, replenishing blood sugar, oxygen, etc.).

Também está prevista a massagem para os corredores que medicamente estão bem, embora fatigados, mas que querem aliviar a tensão muscular e iniciar o processo de recuperação passiva dos seus músculos. Vários operacionais e marquesas estarão disponíveis, mas a ordem de “tratamento” é feita na base da ordem de chegada: os primeiros a chegar, serão os primeiros a serem servidos.

Importa realçar que nunca se deve terminar uma corrida abruptamente e os corredores devem caminhar ou correr mais lentamente depois de passarem a linha da meta. Este período transitório é importante para o reequilíbrio do aparelho cardiovascular, para que o sangue se distribua por todo o corpo como na situação de repouso e dê tempo para que o coração desacelere, bata cada vez mais devagar e com menos força. Evita-se que se “encharquem” os pulmões com sangue ou que este se acumule nas pernas e falte aos órgãos vitais. A sensação de tontura, de fraqueza ou de má disposição pode indicar que chega insuficiente sangue ao cérebro. É o momento de pedir ajuda.

A hidratação é importante para prevenir a desidratação, a qual surge como consequência da prevenção da hipertermia. O processo de sudação-evaporação consome muita água e evita que a temperatura corporal se eleve em demasia. Todos os corredores têm a noção que devem ingerir líquidos ao longo da prova: não querem ficar desidratados. Contudo, esta obsessão pode ser prejudicial se a ingestão de água (simples) for em excesso, de tal modo que o sódio no sangue fica diluído e causa a perigosa hiponatremia.

Curiosamente são os corredores mais lentos, que têm mais tempo para parar nas bancas e beberem água, aqueles que correm maior risco. Para além desta diluição, a perda de sódio pelo suor agrava o quadro clínico. A prevenção passa por não beber apenas água e ingerir as bebidas desportivas, controlar o consumo excessivo de água e ingerir algum sal, que não fará mal e não causará hipertensão arterial. Pode salgar o jantar na véspera: vai precisar desse sal na corrida e perderá mais do que o que ingeriu na véspera. Quando bebe em excesso o corredor paradoxalmente acaba com mais peso que o que tinha antes do início da corrida e corre o risco de originar esta condição médica muito grave. Deve-se, então, beber com moderação e de acordo com as condições atmosféricas. Estas até serão boas, pois a temperatura de 15º a 18º não é perigosa e o risco de choque térmico é mínimo. Já agora, refira-se que até 60% do calor se perde pela cabeça, pelo que também a hipertermia cerebral deve ser evitada. Molhar a cabeça com a água que sobrou da garrafa é uma boa medida, mas não se deve abanar muito a cabeça para que ela não caia no chão.

Acredita-se que a maioria dos participantes na Maratona o faz por gozo, convívio social e algum desafio pessoal. É um teste individual à resistência e chegar ao fim da corrida é motivo de grande satisfação. Como em qualquer evento desportivo, de competição ou de recreação, o consumo de substâncias ou uso de métodos dopantes não deve ser usado. É desleal e faz perigar a saúde. Por outro lado, qualquer participante pode ser sujeito a controlo de antidopagem no final da corrida, mesmo que não seja um atleta federado.

Finalmente apresenta-se um check-list com catorze mandamentos que devem ser considerados antes e durante a corrida: 1. O corredor tem de ter a absoluta certeza de que não possui contra-indicações médicas para correr. A aptidão deve ser atestada por um médico após a realização do respetivo exame; 2. Ver a previsão do tempo atmosférico para que se possa fazer acompanhar com o tipo e quantidade de roupa adequada; 3. Aumente a ingestão de sal no dia anterior. Na corrida vai perder mais do que este que ingeriu; 4. Não use um par de sapatilhas novas na corrida. Use-as durante alguns treinos e não faça a estreia na corrida;

Massages will also be provided for runners who are medically fine but tired and want to relieve muscle tension and begin the passive recovery process of their muscles. Several therapists and massage tables will be available, with “treatment” being given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Runners should never stop a race suddenly; they should continue walking or running slowly after they cross the finish line. This transition period is important for restoring balance to the cardiovascular system and allowing the blood to return to a “resting” distribution throughout the body. It is important to give the heart time to slow down and beat more slowly and with less strength. This prevents the lungs from becoming “saturated” with blood, and the latter from pooling in the legs when it’s needed in the vital organs. If you feel dizzy, weak or unwell, it may be a sign that not enough blood is reaching the brain. That means it’s time to ask for help.

Hydration is important for preventing dehydration, which is in turn important for preventing hyperthermia. The sweat-evaporation process uses a lot of water and stops body temperature from getting too high.

All runners are aware that they should drink liquids throughout the race: they don’t want to get dehydrated. However, this obsession may be harmful if they drink so much (plain) water that the sodium in the blood becomes diluted and causes dangerous hyponatremia. Curiously, it is slower runners, who have more time to stop and drink water, who are at the highest risk. Besides this dilution, the loss of sodium in sweat makes the situation worse. This can be prevented by drinking sports drinks and not just water, monitoring excessive consumption of water, and ingesting some salt, which won’t do any harm or cause high blood pressure. You can add salt to your dinner the night before, as you will need it when running and you will lose more of it than you ingested the night before. When runners drink too much, they paradoxically finish the race heavier than when they started it and risk developing this serious medical condition. Runners should, therefore, drink in moderation and according to the weather. The weather conditions should be good, since temperatures of 15 to 18ºC (59 to 64ºF) aren’t dangerous and the risk of thermal shock is low. You should also remember that 60% of body heat is lost through the head, so hyperthermia of the head should also be avoided. Dampening your head with water left over in the bottle is a good way of doing this, but you should try not to shake your head too much or the water will drip onto the ground.

Most people who take part in marathons do so for fun, to socialize and as a personal challenge. It is a personal test of endurance, and reaching the end of the race is extremely satisfying. As in any sporting event, whether recreational or competitive, no doping substances or any other doping methods may be used. This practice is unfair and poses a health risk. Any participant may be subject to an anti-doping test at the end of the race, including non-federation athletes.

Finally, we have a checklist of Fourteen Commandments that runners should remember before and during the race: 1. You must be absolutely certain you don’t have any medical conditions that mean you shouldn’t run. Fitness to run should be certified by a doctor after he/she has performed an examination; 2. Check the weather forecast to ensure you bring the right type and amount of clothes; 3. Increase your salt intake the day before. You will lose more of it during the race than you ingested; 4. Don’t wear a new pair of sneakers for the race. Break them in during training and don’t wear them for the first time at the race;

5. If it’s a sunny day, bring a baseball cap (turned forwards) and sunglasses with UV protection.

6. Fill out the back of your running bib – the information could be important if you need medical assistance; 7. If you have a medical condition, and if you have been cleared by your doctor to run, notify the organization in advance, indicating your bib number; 8. During the race, keep track of how much water you drink – not too much, not too little – as well as sports drinks; 9. Keep the right pace from the start of the marathon. Even though you’ll feel you have a lot of energy, remember that running too fast at the beginning means you will run too slowly later on; 10. If you feel unwell, dizzy, disoriented, short of breath or have chest pains, slow down and seek help immediately at the nearest place available; 11. Cramps could be your biggest adversary. If you feel them coming on, place a bit of salt on your tongue and don’t swallow. It doesn’t taste good, but it’s good for you. Carry a few packets from home in your pocket; 12. If you are very tired, remember that walking uses less energy than running at a slow pace (light trot); 13. Be contactable and tell us who to contact. Give your contact details to a fellow runner so that a member of your family or anyone else can contact them in the event of an emergency. We may also need to contact your family member in such an event, so put their telephone number on the back of your running bib; 14. Help any runners who are in difficulty or feel unwell. Raise the alarm. Then protect them from the sun or rain. If they are unconscious, place them in the recovery position – see the photo. If you suspect a head or spine injury, do not move them: hold their head with your hands. Then, wait for assistance – we’ll be there in a matter of minutes.

5. Se for um dia de Sol leve um boné de pala comprida (virada para a frente) e óculos de sol com capacidade de filtrarem a radiação ultravioleta; 6. Preencher a parte de trás do “dorsal” pois essa informação é relevante e pode ser determinante na eventualidade de apoio médico; 7. Se tiver algum problema médico, e se tem autorização do seu médico assistente para correr, informe previamente a organização indicando o número do seu “dorsal” 8. Durante a corrida controlar a ingestão de água, nem de mais, nem de menos, e ingerir também bebida desportiva; 9. Manter a passada certa logo desde o início da Maratona, apesar de ainda se sentir com muita força, não esquecer que se correr depressa de mais no início irá correr devagar demais lá mais para a frente; 10. Se se sentir mal, maldisposto, tonto, desorientado, com excessiva falta de ar ou com dor no tórax abrandar o ritmo de corrida e procurar de imediato ajuda no primeiro local disponível; 11. As cãibras poderão ser o seu maior adversário. Logo que tenha a perceção que irá senti-las, coloque um pouco de sal na boca e não engula. É desagradável, mas faz bem. Leve uns pacotinhos e casa no bolso; 12. Se vai muito cansado, lembre-se que caminhar gasta menos energia do que correr em passo lento (trote ligeiro); 13. Seja contactável e digam-nos a quem contactar. Dê o seu contacto a um colega de corrida para que um familiar ou outro possa contactar o seu colega em caso de emergência. Também nós poderemos ter necessidade de contactar o seu familiar nestes casos, pelo que coloque no verso do dorsal esse número para telefonarmos; 14. Ajude o corredor que está em dificuldade e a sentir-se mal. Dê o alerta. Depois proteja-o da chuva e da radiação solar. Se estiver inconsciente, coloque-o em posição lateral de segurança (PLS) – ver foto. Se suspeitar de traumatismo do crânio ou cervical, não mexa muito: segure-lhe apenas a cabeça com as mãos. Depois … espere por ajuda, pois dentro de poucos minutos nós estaremos lá.

Parque da Cidade do Porto O maior espaço verde do Porto e o maior parque urbano do país tem uma superfície de 83 hectares que se estendem até ao oceano atlântico por entre árvores e uma série de percursos que fazem as delícias dos amantes de desporto ao ar livre. Vale a pena uma visita!

Anémona – She Changes Da autoria de Janet Echelman, a estrutura em rede, com cerca de 50 m de altura, denominada “She Changes”, é uma homenagem à comunidade piscatória de Matosinhos. O seu esplendor permite-lhe ser encarada como um dos mais emblemáticos cartões-de-visita do concelho de Matosinhos, bem como obra referência não só ao nível nacional, mas também internacional.

Porto de Leixões e Ponte Móvel Construída no início dos anos 60, a ponte móvel foi, recentemente, substituída por uma nova infra-estrutura. Esta ponte móvel faz a ligação da cidade de Matosinhos e Leça e integra-se no Porto de Leixões, a maior infra-estrutura portuária do Norte de Portugal que desempenha um papel primordial ao servir diversas atividades industriais e comerciais na sua área geográfica.

Fort São Francisco Xavier Built in the 17th century to defend the coastline from the incursions of pirates from North Africa. It is also known as the Castelo do Queijo (“Cheese Castle”) since, according to legend, it was built on a rounded granite rock, similar in shape to a wheel of cheese.

Parque da Cidade of Porto The largest green area in Porto and the largest urban park in the country covers 83 hectares, extending to the Atlantic Ocean with plenty of trees and a series of paths that will delight those who love to run outdoors. It’s worth a visit!

Anemone – She Changes Designed by Janet Echelman, the netted sculpture is approximately 50 meters high and known as “She Changes”, paying homage to the fishing community of Matosinhos. Its splendor allows it to be seen as one of the most iconic calling cards of the municipality of Matosinhos, as well as a national and international work of reference.

Port of Leixões and Movable Bridge Built at the start of the 1960s, the movable bridge was recently replaced with a new infrastructure. This movable bridge connects the city of Matosinhos and Leça, and is part of the Port of Leixões, the largest port structure in the North of Portugal, which plays an important role in serving the various surrounding industrial and commercial activities.

The Foz to Ribeira trajectory is one of the most beautiful running paths you will find in the city of Porto.

Forte de São João Baptista - Castelo da Foz Mesmo na foz do rio Douro vai encontrar o Forte de São João Baptista.

Mandado edificar no final do séc. XVI para defesa da costa e da entrada do rio Douro, o Forte de São João Baptista é um belo exemplo de arquitectura militar. Está classificado como imóvel de Interesse Público, desde 6 de junho de 1967.

Tendo o rio Douro como pano de fundo em que ele se junta ao mar, vai encontrar uma paisagem que o vai deixar encantado. A unir as cidades do Porto e Vila Nova de Gaia existem seis pontes. Ao longo do percurso da maratona vai encontrar seis delas, avistar a Ponte do Freixo (a última a montante) e atravessar a Ponte D. Luís I. Ponte da Arrábida A Ponte da Arrábida, projetada por Edgar Cardoso, com um vão de 270 m, foi durante algum tempo o recorde mundial para pontes em arco de betão armado. Inaugurada em 1963, atinge 70 m acima do nível médio das águas. Esta ponte liga a zona do Campo Alegre, no lado do Porto, à zona da Arrábida, no lado de Vila Nova de Gaia. É uma obra classificada como monumento nacional.

Centro de Congressos da Alfândega do Porto Situado no coração da cidade do Porto e sob a margem do rio Douro, o Centro de Congressos da Alfândega do Porto surpreende pela sua emblemática arquitetura que alia a tradição à modernidade. Este edifício iniciou a sua reabilitação em 1994 por Eduardo Souto de Moura – vencedor do prémio Pritzker, que fez destacar a arquitetura singular deste edifício dentro da paisagem urbanística da cidade.

Ribeira Considerada uma das mais antigas praças, mencionada já em 1389, é de origem medieval. Zona de intenso comércio, com tendas de venda e lota do peixe, não passou despercebida a João de Almada e Melo que, no séc.

XVIII, a reformulou.

As obras realizadas neste século pela Junta das Obras Públicas, sob influência de John Whitehead, foram financiadas pelas rendas do vinho. Do plano original apenas foram concretizadas as frentes norte, com a monumental Fonte da Praça da Ribeira e a poente. A sul, a muralha acabou por ser derrubada em 1821 e a nascente, as construções medievais sobrevivem até hoje. Intervenções arqueológicas na década de 1980 puseram a descoberto, no centro da praça, um chafariz do séc. XVII. Reconstruído no seu local de origem, este foi coroado por uma peça escultórica da autoria de José Rodrigues, conhecida vulgarmente por “Cubo da Ribeira”.

Fort of São João Baptista – Castelo da Foz Right at the mouth of the Douro river you will find the Fort of São João Baptista.

Ordered to be built at the end of the 16th century to defend the coast and the entrance to the Douro river, the Fort of São João Baptista is a beautiful example of military architecture. It has been classified as a structure of public interest since June 6, 1967.

Having the Douro river where it meets the sea as a backdrop, you will find a breathtaking landscape.

There are six bridges uniting the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

You will see six of them during the course of the marathon, glimpsing the Freixo bridge (the last one to be built) and crossing the D. Luís I bridge.

Da Foz até à Ribeira é um dos percursos de corrida mais belos que vai poder experienciar na cidade do Porto.

Arrábida Bridge The Arrábida Bridge, designed by Edgar Cardoso and with a span of 270 meters, held the world record for reinforced concrete arch bridges for some time after its construction. Inaugurated in 1963, it rises 70 meters above the average water level. This bridge links the Campo Alegre area on the Porto side with the Arrábida area on the Vila Nova de Gaia side. This structure is classified as a national monument.

47 Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre Located in the heart of the city of Porto and on the banks of the Douro river, the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre displays a surprising blend of traditional and modern architecture. In 1994, restoration work on the building began, led by Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the Pritzker prize, who highlighted the unique architecture of the building within the urban landscape of the city.

Ribeira Having been mentioned all the way back in 1389, this is considered one of the oldest squares, being medieval in origin. As it was an area of intense commerce with stalls for the sale and auction of fish, it did not go unnoticed by João de Almada e Melo, who redesigned it in the 18th century.

The work done in this century by the Public Works Office, under the influence of John Whitehead, was financed by wine revenue. Of the original plans, only the northern face, with the monumental Praça da Ribeira Fountain, and the western face, were completed. The southern wall was torn down in 1821, while the Medieval construction to the east has survived

Ponte D. Luís I Projetada pelo Eng.º Teófilo Seyrig, discípulo de Eiffel, foi inaugurada em 1886 e é constituída por dois tabuleiros em ferro sobrepostos. Tem 395 metros de comprimento e 8 de largura, sendo o seu arco ainda hoje considerado o maior arco do mundo em ferro forjado.

Atualmente o tabuleiro superior é ocupado por uma das linhas do Metro do Grande Porto, ligando a zona da Catedral no Porto, ao Jardim do Morro e à Avenida da República em Vila Nova de Gaia.

Cais de Gaia Situado num local privilegiado da Zona Histórica de Vila Nova de Gaia, Património da Humanidade, o Cais de Gaia foi traçado a pensar no conforto e bem-estar de quem procura momentos de tranquilidade e lazer, com a família e amigos.

O teleférico liga a cota alta e baixa da cidade de Gaia, numa viagem de 6 minutos. O terminal à cota baixa está localizado no Cais de Gaia, na cota alta o terminal está implantado junto ao Jardim do Morro e à estação do Metro Jardim do Morro, posicionando-se também como meio de acesso para a visita ao Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar. Esta viagem proporciona uma vista magnífica do Porto, do rio Douro e das suas pontes e das caves do Vinho do Porto.

Afurada O percurso entre a Ponte D. Luís I e a Afurada, uma terra de pescadores, permite disfrutar de uma das mais belas paisagens sobre a cidade do Porto. A Reserva Natural Local do Estuário do Douro, situado na zona arenosa do Cabedelo é um ótimo local para descansar depois da corrida ou caminhada e ainda pode aproveitar a esplanada da Douro Marina.

Ponte do Infante Batizada em honra do Infante D. Henrique foi inaugurada em março de 2003. É da autoria do engenheiro Adão da Fonseca e foi construída para substituir o tabuleiro superior da ponte D. Luís I, entretanto reservado para a Linha Amarela do Metro do Porto. Liga a zona das Fontainhas, no Porto, à freguesia de Oliveira do Douro, em Vila Nova de Gaia.

Ponte Maria Pia A primeira grande obra de Gustavo Eiffel, em colaboração com Theóphile Seyrig, inaugurada em 1877, e tendo sido utilizada durante 114 anos. Tem um arco biarticulado que suporta o tabuleiro ferroviário de via simples através de pilares em treliça. Foi classificada em 1982 como Monumento Nacional e em 1999 foi internacionalmente

until today. Archaeological excavations in the 1980s uncovered a fountain from the 17th century in the center of the square. Rebuilt in its original location, it was crowned with a sculpture by José Rodrigues, commonly known as the “Ribeira Cube”.

D. Luís I Bridge Designed by the engineer Théophile Seyrig, a disciple of Eiffel, it was inaugurated in 1886 and consists of two stacked iron decks. It is 395 meters long and 8 meters wide, and even today its arch is considered the largest wrought iron arch in the world. Currently, the upper deck is occupied by one of the lines of the Greater Porto Metro, which links the area of the Cathedral in Porto to the Jardim do Morro and the Avenida da República in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Gaia Quay Located in the most prestigious area of the Historic Zone of Vila Nova de Gaia, a World Heritage Site, the Gaia Quay was designed for the comfort and well-being of those seeking moments of tranquility and leisure with family and friends.

The cable car links the upper and lower part of the city of Gaia in a 6-minute journey. The terminal in the lower part is located in the Gaia Quay, while the upper part of the terminal is built next to the Jardim do Morro and at the Jardim do Morro Metro Station, which also makes it a means to access the Serra do Pilar Monastery. This journey provides a magnificent view of Porto, the Douro river and its bridges and the Port Wine cellars.

Afurada The route between the D. Luís I Bridge and this fishing village provides the athlete with some of the most beautiful views of the city of Porto. The Local Natural Reserve of the Douro Estuary, located on the sandy coastline of Cabedelo, is a wonderful location to rest after running or walking, and you can also enjoy the esplanade of the Douro Marina.

Infante Bridge Named in honor of Henry the Navigator (in Portuguese, Infante D. Henrique), it was inaugurated in March 2003. It was designed by engineer Adão da Fonseca and was built to replace the upper deck of the D. Luís I Bridge, which had been earmarked for the Yellow Line of the Porto Metro. It links the Fontainhas area in Porto to the parish of Oliveira do Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Ponte São João Esta estrutura ferroviária, de autoria de Edgar Cardoso, liga a estação de Campanhã, no Porto, a todos os destinos em direção a sul, sendo a primeira estação a de General Torres em Vila Nova de Gaia. A inauguração dá-se a 24 de junho de 1991, dia de S. João.

Igreja Conventual de S. Francisco de Assis É o principal templo em estilo gótico existente na cidade, cuja construção se iniciou no século XIV. É uma das mais importantes obras do Barroco, pelo seu interior em talha dourada, dos séculos XVII e XVIII. De destacar a Árvore de Jessé, bem como o Cemitério Catacumbal. É Monumento Nacional desde 1910 e Património Cultural da Humanidade - UNESCO desde 1996.

Este grande momento vai ser vivido no Queimódromo, com uma reta da meta mítica que apenas vai ser percorrida por aqueles que terminam este desafio. Do primeiro ao último, todos são especiais!

Maria Pia Bridge This bridge, in collaboration with Theóphile Seyrig, was the first great work of Gustavo Eiffel, and was inaugurated in 1877, having been used for the next 114 years. It has a bi-articulated arch that supports the single lane railway deck with trellised pillars. It was classified as a National Monument in 1982 and internationally recognized in 1999 as an historic landmark of civil engineering, thanks to its innovative nature. It has been deactivated since 1991.

São João Bridge This railroad structure, designed by Edgar Cardoso, links the Campanhã station in Porto to all railway destinations to the south, the first station being that of General Torres in Vila Nova de Gaia. It was inaugurated on June 24, 1991, the day of the feast of St. John (São João).

S. Francisco de Assis Convent Church This is the main Gothic-style temple existing in the city, the construction of which began in the 14th century. It is one of the most important works of the Baroque style, due to its gilded wood interior from the 17th and 18th centuries. Of special interest is the Tree of Jesse and the Catacomb Cemetery. It has been a National Monument since 1910 and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1996.

Finish line at Queimódromo The emotion of finishing a marathon is a feeling that only someone who has experienced it can understand. This great moment will be lived at the Queimódromo, with a mythical finish line that will only be crossed by those who finish this challenge. From the first to the last, they are all special!
