Esta nueva edición de Opium Magazine pretende reflejar los distintos aspectos de Costa Este, desde nuestra evolución empresarial a perfiles de personajes relevantes en nuestra organización, pero sobre todo quiere conectar contigo con artículos que reflejen nuestra filosofía y estilo de vida.

This latest edition of Opium Magazine aims to reflect the different aspects of Costa Este, covering the evolution of our business as well as profiling key people in our organization. But above all we want to connect with our readers via articles that reflect our philosophy and lifestyle.

A pesar de que este año ha sido particularmente difícil, en especial para todos aquellos que estamos relacionados con el turismo, hemos materializado diversos proyectos que perseguíamos hace tiempo, entre ellos el más relevante la apertura de un nuevo Opium en Londres. También un Beach Club en Marbella que supone una diversificación de nuestras líneas de negocio y por último la apertura de un Bling Bling en la madrileña plaza de Colón .

Although this year has been particularly difficult, especially for those of us who are in sectors related to tourism, we have brought to fruition many projects that we have been working on for some time. The most relevant are the opening of a new Opium in London, in Piccadilly, the opening of a Beach Club in Marbella that will lead to the diversification of our lines of business and finally the opening of a Bling Bling in the Plaza de Colón, Madrid.

Fruto del esfuerzo realizado se nos ha concedido el Premio al mejor Grupo Empresarial 2017, galardón que nos fue concedido en el Congreso Nacional de Ocio Nocturno que tuvo lugar en Valencia en el mes de abril.

As a result of these efforts we have been recognized as the best Business Group 2017, a prize that was granted to us at the National Night Leisure Congress that took place in Valencia in April.

Queremos destacar asimismo nuestra apuesta por la convivencia vecinal que ha dado como fruto la creación de la AFM, una asociación de operadores del Front Maritim de la Barceloneta cuyo objetivo es realizar acciones dirigidas al bienestar de los vecinos.

We also want to highlight our commitment to neighborhood coexistence. This has resulted in the creation of the AFM, an association of operators from Barcelona's Front Maritim whose objective is to carry out actions which will improve welfare for local residents.

En la misma línea y, también fruto de nuestra concienciación en cuanto a la seguridad tanto en el interior como en el exterior de nuestros locales y el control de nivel acústico, hemos obtenido los correspondientes Distintivos de Seguridad otorgados por la International Nightlife Association.

Along the same lines, and also as a result of our awareness of safety both inside and outside our premises and the control of noise levels, we have been certified with a Safety Distinction issued by the International Nightlife Association.

También apostamos por mejorar este magazine en cada entrega con nuevos creativos como Alejandro Brito, nuestro fotógrafo de portada, cuya sesión realizada en Opium Barcelona ha cnseguido reflejar la atmosfera Opium. Todo ello como parte de muchos otros contenidos sobre la actualidad del mundo de la noche, las tendencias, la gastronomía y el espectáculo.

We're also making an investment in improving this magazine with each issue by bringing on board new creative talent such as Alejandro Brito, our cover photographer.

His session at Opium Barcelona has done a great job of reflecting the atmosphere there. All that forms part of our overall content which spans the world of nightlife, trends, gastronomy and entertainment.

Por Patricia Castán Muchos de los clientes que una noche cualquiera llenan las pistas de Opium Barcelona ni siquiera habían nacido cuando una generación de barceloneses y visitantes olímpicos descubrieron la magia nocturna de una carpa de verano que se convirtió en el lugar donde había que estar en las noches del 92. Su artífice era en aquel entonces un incipiente grupo, Costa Este, llamado a conquistar la oferta de ocio nocturno local en una expansión sin tregua ni pausa.

Aquellas noches de verano en La Chatarra y Torre Melina se alternaron con inviernos reconfortados en las barras de Jimmyz, otro referente. Eran tiempos en que los 'discjokeys' abarrotaban pistas desde el anonimato y el consumo vivía momentos dorados. Los jóvenes y no tan jóvenes salían mucho y las propuestas de los hermanos Bordas, al frente del pujante imperio, hacían siempre bingo. Creadas o gestionadas por ese prolífico tándem, salas como Opium, Astoria, Universal, Bling Bling, Nuba o Pacha Barcelona, entre otras muchas, se convirtieron en escalas obligatorias de decenas de miles de noctámbulos.

En medio de esa red que a día de hoy abarca desde la gastronomía a algunas de las zonas VIP más cotizadas en una discoteca local, Opium viene a ser como la capital de un reino donde una buena copa, los decibelios y los DJ de primera línea mundial configuran un idioma universal. Es la joya de su corona, que exhibe poderío con la terraza más grande que se asoma al litoral barcelonés y el mayor despliegue de pistas, reservados y barras donde sucumbir a la noche, sea cual sea tu nacionalidad.

Pero más allá del continente… Opium es puro contenido: la opción de disfrutar de su hedonista terraza y restaurante acompañado de un buen arroz, un pescado fresco, o un solomillo al foie y rematar el homenaje con un cóctel con el Mediterráneo por único horizonte. O saltar a su ‘terreno de juego’ a entregarse al baile sin más maestro de ceremonias que quien preside la cabina: del residente Frank Caro a superstars como David Guetta, Bob Sinclair, Armin van Buuren o Tiësto. Otras generaciones, otras caras, pero la misma energía.

By Patricia Castán Many of the clients who, on any given night, fill the Opium Barcelona dance floors were not even born when a generation of Barcelona residents and Olympic visitors discovered the nocturnal magic of a summer tent that became the place to be in the nights of 1992. Behind this burgeoning scene was a fledgling group, East Coast, which felt itself called to meet the challenge of offering local nocturnal leisure without letting anything stand in their way.

Those summer nights at La Chatarra and Torre Melina alternated with comforting winters at the Jimmyz bars, another landmark. They were times when the DJs played tracks from behind the shelter of anonymity and when the concept of consumption seemed to be enjoying a golden moment. The young and not-so-young came out in their droves and the new nightlife proposition offered by the Bordas brothers, at the head of a fledgling empire, seemed always to strike gold. With that prolific duo at the helm either as creators or managers, rooms such as Opium, Astoria, Universal, Bling Bling, Nuba or Pacha Barcelona, among many others became compulsory roosting points for tens of thousands of night owls.

In the midst of a network that today features an offering ranging from gastronomy to some of the most sought-after VIP areas around, Opium is like the capital of a kingdom, a kingdom where a good drink, loud decibels and top-notch DJs form a common language. It is the jewel of its crown, showing off the largest terrace overlooking the Barcelona coast and the largest display of tracks, booths and bars to help you succumb to the night, whatever your nationality.

But beyond the continent ... Opium is pure content: giving the option of enjoying its hedonistic terrace and restaurant while partaking of one of the region’s signature rice dishes, fresh fish, or a sirloin with foie gras and finishing off with a cocktail, the Mediterranean providing a unique backdrop. The other option is to take the dance floor with none other as master of ceremonies presiding over the booth than resident Frank Caro or superstars like David Guetta, Bob Sinclair, Armin van Buuren or Tiësto. Generations and faces, may have changed but the energy remains the same.

Parada obligatoria de los amantes de la noche madrileña, no tardó Opium desde que abrió sus puertas en convertirse en uno de los enclaves más sofisticados y divertidos de la capital. Un mes después de su apertura, ya era el place to be en la ciudad: los personajes del momento de la crónica social engrosaron la lista VIP de este club con aires neoyorquinos y los paparazzi se agolpaban en la entrada con la intención de ver salir al famoso de turno a las tantas de la madrugada con cara de haberlo pasado bien.

Desde entonces, y pese a su corto recorrido en la capital, Opium se ha convertido en un clásico que no decepciona, un lugar donde muchos periodistas del corazón no perdonamos una noche de nuestra semana, sabedores de que quizá podamos destapar un nuevo romance o una noche de juerga de algún famoso.

By Angie Calero From elite athletes to actors and familiar faces from the small screen, Opium is the nerve centre of the capital’s nocturnal scene.

It did not take Opium long from opening its doors to become one of the most sophisticated and entertaining enclaves of the capital and a mandatory stop for lovers of the Madrid night scene. A month after its opening, it was already the place to be in the city. Bold-faced names swelled the VIP list at a club which had an air of New York about it and the paparazzi crowded at the entrance with the intention of seeing a famous face flit away the early hours of the morning with the air of having had a good time.

Since then, and despite its relative infancy in the capital, Opium has become a classic that does not disappoint, a place which has become a go-to point for journalists covering the comings and goings of the rich and famous. They know that there perhaps they can uncover a new liason or be alerted to a riotous party.

Porque Opium viene a ser ese híbrido entre restaurante y sala de baile que te permite pasar ahí la noche entera, y que tiene a pie de pista sus reservados, con sus elixires premium de cinco litros acompañados con bengalas y alguna botella de champán. Un club del más alto nivel donde sus parroquianos acuden a ver y dejarse ver, pero también buscan divertirse en un ambiente selecto y discreto, sobre todo, discreto. Esto es precisamente lo que buscan Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerard Piqué, Mario Suárez, Isco Alarcón o James Rodríguez cuando deciden marcarse unos bailes a ritmo de reggaeton, house o música rock. Porque ya lo dijo James, que con Kevin Roldán “empezó todo”.

Because Opium is a hybrid between a restaurant and a dance hall, it allows you to spend the whole night within its premises.

There is the option of enjoying one of its premium five-litre elixirs accompanied by flares and a bottle of champagne at the foot of the dance floor. Denizens come to see and be seen at a club of the highest level but they also seek to have fun in a high-end and discreet environment. The latter is especially important. This is precisely what Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerard Piqué, Mario Suárez, Isco Alarcón or James Rodríguez want when they decide to bust some dance moves to the rhythm of reggaeton, house or rock music. Because James already said that with Kevin Roldán "everything began".

That said, elite athletes with a reputation for revelry are not the only ones who frequent Opium. Businessmen, socialites and familiar faces from the world of TV can also be found at Number 56, José Abascal. Alongside actor Mario Casas and singer Juan Peña one might also rub shoulders with Alba Carrillo, Kiko Matamoros and Fonsi Nieto. To them and many others this Madrid club has given great moments and unforgettable nights.

Cars have often been the true protagonists when it comes to the silver screen. Models from all classes and times have made unforgettable appearances ranging from the classic James Bond Aston Martin that evolved with the franchise and was even replaced in some titles by models of other brands such as BMW, Lotus, Ferrari or Audi to the Ford Mustang that Steve McQueen drove in "Bullitt". El Interceptor V8 de 'Mad Max' no podría faltar en esta lista. El Ford Falcon Coupe XB GT de 1973, un coche exclusivo para el mercado australiano y del que se fabricaron menos de mil unidades, fue el elegido por Byron Kennedy y George Miller para la primera película de la saga 'Mad Max'. Para la segunda entrega, le hicieron algunas modificaciones y le añadieron unos enormes depósitos supletorios sobre el maletero. El Interceptor estuvo en el Museo Nacional del Motor de Australia hasta en 1993, cuando pasó al Cars of Stars Museum, en Keswick, Reino Unido.

El Paseo de Gracia esconde varios iconos modernistas que se perciben a simple vista. El más visible son las baldosas hexagonales con motivos florales que conforman el pavimento de la avenida. En 1997 se reeditaron a partir del relieve original del mosaico hidráulico que Antonio Gaudí creó en 1904 y que fabricaba Escofet. Otro ornamento indispensable son las 32 farolas-bancos que se diseñaron expresamente en 1906 por el arquitecto barcelonés Pere Falqués i Urpí y que siguen la misma estela estética.

Paseo de Gracia hides several modernist icons in plain sight. The most obvious are the hexagonal tiles with floral motifs that make up the pavement of the avenue. In 1997 they were remade from the original relief of the mosaic tile created by Antonio Gaudí in 1904 and produced by Escofet.

The other indispensable ornaments are 32 lampposts-benches that were designed to order in 1906 by the Barcelona architect Pere Falqués i Urpí and follow the same aesthetic lines.

Será el momento top de este verano. El rey mundial del pop estará el 12 de Julio en Opium Barcelona presentando su nuevo disco en vivo!

Michael Jackson, el indiscutible rey del pop, quería ser blanco, y por eso transformó tanto su imagen y pasó tantas veces por el quirófano. Justin Timberlake, en cambio, sólo quería ser como Michael Jackson: cantar igual de bien, bailar con la misma flexibilidad y ser una estrella del espectáculo al más alto nivel. Tenía a su favor que ya era blanco –aunque con el alma negra–, pero en todo lo demás ha tenido que esforzarse y luchar a brazo partido para ganarse la credibilidad de un público que, al principio de todo, era escéptico con este joven rubio del sur. “Cuando sabes que tienes talento dentro, pero todo el mundo te ve como un producto, comprendes que tienes que luchar el doble para alcanzar tus sueños”, le confesaba a Rolling Stone a principios de la década pasada.

Timberlake comenzó como estrella adolescente en el famoso Disney Channel –de ahí también surgieron Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera y la que fuera su primera novia, Britney Spears–, y al poco tiempo entró a formar parte de la boy band *NSync. Era el líder natural: tenía los mejores movimientos, la mejor voz, el mejor pelo. Pero las bandas de chicos son una trampa de la que difícilmente se sale: te encasillan como un ídolo para adolescentes, como una marioneta sin personalidad al servicio de un productor desalmado. La única manera de romper el círculo vicioso es por la fuerza: Justin decidió romper con *NSync, emprender una carrera en solitario, y volver a luchar como si empezara de cero.

“Fue un momento duro”, explicaba en la misma entrevista. “Todo el mundo tenía ganas de decir que yo era un cero a la izquierda”.

Pero publicó su primer álbum, Justified (2002), y cambió la historia del pop moderno. Aquel disco sonaba a Michael Jackson porque muchas canciones habían sido escritas expresamente para el rey del pop por el dúo The Neptunes. Jackson no las quiso, y cayeron en manos de Timberlake, que vio potencial en números funk tan pegadizos como Rock your body. Además, se acompañó de Timbaland, el productor más avispado del momento, el revolucionario del R&B que entendió que el futuro comercial del género pasaba por hacer buenos discos con artistas blancos. En pocas semanas, Justin era un artista nuevo: un sex symbol sin compromiso –había roto hacía poco con Britney–, un Michael Jackson blanco, una máquina de bailar y de facturar. El nuevo ídolo que necesitaba el mercado americano.

Desde entonces, Justin Timberlake no se ha bajado del pedestal.

Ha tenido momentos de gloria y momentos polémicos –entre los primeros, su segundo disco FutureSex/LoveSounds, una fantasía de pop futurista memorable, o su matrimonio con la actriz Jessica Biel; entre los segundos, el famoso caso del pezóngate en la final de la SuperBowl de 2004, cuando accidentalmente destapó un pecho de Janet Jackson-, pero en conjunto se le reconoce como una de las estrellas más grandes del siglo, el equivalente masculino a Rihanna y Beyoncé. No ha sido hasta hace poco que le han salido competidores de verdad, en su caso Bruno Mars. “En este mundo nada es para siempre”, le explicaba al New York Times, “pero es gratificante estar tanto tiempo haciendo música al más alto nivel y recibir el amor de la gente. Ojalá esto dure lo máximo posible”.

No sólo música: Justin es un actor con recorrido –ha tenido papeles en películas de David Fincher y Woody Allen, y compuso la canción del éxito infantil Trolls–, un artista en permanente renovación y un líder de tendencias. Su último disco, Man of the Woods (2018), busca el encuentro entre R&B y folk, entre la música rítmica y futurista de toda su carrera y su origen rural en el estado de Tennessee, pues nunca ha dejado de ser un chico de campo. Tiene 37 años, un pasado impresionante, y un futuro todavía por escribir. Su huella en la industria del entretenimiento va a ser profunda.

Michael Jackson, the undisputed king of pop, wanted to be white which is why he transformed his image so much and went through surgery so many times. Justin Timberlake, on the other hand, just wanted to be like Michael Jackson: sing just as well, dance with the same flexibility and be as big a star. He had in his favor the fact he was already white - although with black soul - but in everything else he had to work hard and fight to win the credibility of an audience that, at the beginning of everything, was sceptical about this young blonde from the south. "When you know you have talent inside, but everyone sees you as a product, you understand that you have to fight twice as hard to achieve your dreams," he told Rolling Stone at the beginning of the last decade.

Timberlake began his career as a teen star on the famous Disney Channel – the same talent factory which also produced Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera and his first girlfriend, Britney Spears - and soon he joined the boy band *NSync. He was the natural leader: he had the best movements, the best voice, the best hair. But boy bands are a trap that is hard to escape from: they pigeonhole you as a teen idol, as a puppet without a personality in the service of a heartless producer.

The only way to break the vicious circle is by force: Justin decided to break with * NSync, start a solo career, and fight again as if starting from scratch. "It was a hard time," he explained in the same interview.

"Everyone wanted to say that I was a nobody."

But he released his first album, Justified (2002), and changed the history of modern pop. That album sounded like Michael Jackson because many songs had been written specifically for the king of pop by the duo The Neptunes. Jackson did not want them, and they fell into the hands of Timberlake, who saw potential in funk numbers as catchy as Rock Your Body. In addition, he was accompanied by Timbaland, the most savvy producer of the moment, the R&B revolutionary who understood that the commercial future of the genre was to make good albums with white artists. In a few weeks, Justin was a new artist: a sex symbol without commitments - he had recently broken with Britney - a white Michael Jackson, a machine for dancing and earning.

Por Isidre Estevez Nacido y criado en la isla de Oahu, este surfista hawaiano aprendió desde niño a vivir en calma y comunión con la naturaleza. Cuando descubrió su inclinación por el arte siendo adolescente, ya no pudo parar. Pronto se trasladó a Nueva York, donde su doble pasión por el arte y el océano le cambiaron la vida.

Sus murales pintados en lugares abandonados y parcialmente sumergidos bajo el agua le han convertido en uno de los artistas emergentes más prometedores. Autodidacta, pinta en la naturaleza (principalmente en espacios abandonados y donde hay agua), retrata figuras de mujeres y utiliza pintura no tóxica y biodegradable. Sabe que su arte será efímero. Hula hace magia y la hace con unos murales inesperados en los que el agua interactúa con la composición.

Sus retratos son casi siempre de mujeres. Una fijación que él explica así: “Disfruto capturando emociones y sentimientos que no puedo expresar con palabras, y las formas suaves y delicadas del cuerpo femenino me ayudan a proyectar esas sensaciones y a conectar personalmente con mi obra.”

Algunas de sus obras más llamativas son una serie de murales que representan a mujeres semisumergidas, y cuyo aspecto varía según la altura de las mareas. “Fue una idea que me vino a la cabeza mientras trabajaba en otro proyecto. Cuando estaba haciendo las sesiones de fotos para estas pinturas, me di cuenta de cuánto me gusta estar en el agua mientras uso mi creatividad, y estos murales pretenden representar la relación que tengo con la naturaleza”, expresa

Donde el común de los mortales vemos un barco a medio hundir, Hula atisba el lienzo en el que la protagonista de su próxima creación alargará una mano al cielo para no ahogarse. Donde uno percibe un muro vacío al filo de una cascada, Hula descubre el fondo perfecto para que una mujer se agarre tenazmente a la cuerda que le impedirá caerse. Y así, ad infinitum, una capacidad sin límites para devolver la vida a espacios abandonados.

“Como crecí en Hawai, siempre he disfrutado encontrando lugares escondidos, como senderos abandonados o playas perdidas donde surfear”, actividad a la que dedicaba gran parte de su tiempo hasta que, a punto de cumplir los 20 años, descubrió el grafiti y los tatuajes.

Dada la presencia del océano en su vida, muchos de esos lugares tienen una vinculación con el agua, lo que le llevó a crear murales parcialmente sumergidos utilizando para ello una tabla de surf.

Fueron precisamente estas obras las que le dieron a conocer en el mundo del street art allá por 2015.

“Empleo figuras femeninas con la naturaleza porque creo que encajan bien con los entornos.

En diferentes culturas y mitos, se considera que la naturaleza es femenina. Además, creo que algunos de los lugares que encuentro son misteriosos y que incluir un personaje femenino siempre produce emociones únicas en la obra”, explica.

La propia ubicación de sus obras, expuestas a los elementos, hacen que sean efímeras, y desaparecen a los pocos meses de ser pintadas. “Al principio era realmente duro dejar marchar mis obras. Estaba acostumbrado a que mis pinturas duraran para siempre en el estudio, donde están seguras en unos lienzos en los que se pueden preservar fácilmente”, recuerda.

The artist known as Hula in the world of Street Art and who draws in unusual places, mixes surf with graffiti to seduce the world.

By Isidre Estevez Born and raised on the island of Oahu, this Hawaiian surfer learned from childhood to live peacefully and in communion with nature. When he discovered his inclination for art as a teenager, he could not stop. Soon he moved to New York, where his double passion for art and the ocean changed his life.

His murals painted in abandoned places and partially submerged under water have made him one of the most promising emerging artists. Self-taught, he paints in nature (mainly in abandoned spaces and where there is water), portrays women's figures and uses non-toxic and biodegradable paint.

He knows that his art will be ephemeral. Hula does magic and does it with unexpected murals in which the water interacts with the composition.

His portraits are almost always of women, a fixation he explains by saying: "I enjoy capturing emotions and feelings that I can not express in words, and the soft and delicate forms of the female body help me to project those sensations and connect personally with my work."

Some of his most striking works are a series of murals depicting semi-submerged women, whose appearance varies according to the height of the tides. "It was an idea that came to mind while working on another project. When I was doing the photo sessions for these paintings, I realized how much I like to be in the water while using my creativity, and these murals are meant to represent the relationship I have with nature. "

Where common mortals see a ship half sinking, Hula peeks at the canvas in which the protagonist of his next creation will stretch out a hand to the sky so as not to drown. Where one perceives an empty wall at the edge of a waterfall, Hula discovers the perfect background for a woman to hold on tightly to the rope that will prevent her from falling. And so, ad infinitum, an unlimited capacity to restore life to abandoned spaces.

"As I grew up in Hawaii, I have always enjoyed finding hidden places, such as abandoned trails or lost beaches where I could go surfing", he said. This was an activity to which he dedicated much of his time until he was about to turn 20 and discovered graffiti and tattoos.

Given the presence of the ocean in his life, many of these places have a connection with water, which led him to create partially submerged murals using a surfboard. It was precisely these works that made him known in the world of street art back in 2015.

"I use female figures with nature because I think they fit well with the environments. In different cultures and myths, nature is considered to be feminine. Also, I think some of the places I find are mysterious and that including a female character always produces unique emotions in the work."

The very location of their works, exposed to the elements, make them ephemeral, and disappear after a few months of being painted. "At the beginning it was really hard to let my works go. I was used to having my paintings last forever in the studio, where they are safe on canvases where they can be easily preserved," he recalls.

Juan Antonio Bayona nació en Barcelona el 9 de mayo de 1975, en el seno de una familia humilde del barrio de Trinitat Vella. Su relación con el cine se remonta a su más tierna infancia: “El primer recuerdo que tengo en mi vida es el plano en el que aparece Christopher Reeve vestido de Superman volando. Yo tenía tres o cuatro años y era en el cine Urgell de Barcelona. Desde entonces intenté hacer cine. Hacía dibujos en las esquinas de las libretas y pasaba rápido las hojas, ahí ya había una intención de hacer cine.”

Un sueño que parecía imposible para un niño de barrio barcelonés, pero que del que él nunca dudó. “Recuerdo una conversación con un amigo de toda la vida. Le dije que me iba a apuntar a la escuela de cine, me dio una colleja y me dijo que tenía muchos pájaros en la cabeza. Y mi reacción a eso fue de extrañeza, de pensar cómo puede este tío dudar de que no voy a dedicarme a lo que me voy a dedicar. Siempre lo tuve muy claro”, asegura.

Tan claro que lo acabó haciendo realidad. Para Bayona, que ha protagonizado su propio sueño, “hay que estar convencido de que uno lo va a conseguir, sobre todo en una profesión tan difícil como esta uno no se puede permitir dudar.” Algo que, paradójicamente, no le impide mantener un punto de inseguridad: “Es que a mí aún me cuesta creerme que soy director de cine, ¿eh? A mí, cuando me preguntan ¿a qué te dedicas?, ahora ya empiezo a decir: soy director de cine.”

Estudió en la Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC) y empezó a trabajar dirigiendo anuncios de televisión y vídeos musicales para artistas españoles como Raphael, OBK, Enrique Bunbury, Nena Daconte o Camela. También realizó varios cortometrajes,. Su debut en la dirección de largometrajes llegó con 'El orfanato' (2007), su primera película, que le valió el premio Goya del cine español al mejor director novel. Una historia de terror protagonizada por Belén Rueda que acabaría generando versiones en Estados Unidos e incluso en Japón.

Su segunda película fue 'Lo imposible' (2012), un largometraje protagonizada por Ewan McGregor y Naomi Watts que recreaba la experiencia de una familia en un tsunami, y por la que obtuvo una nominación a los Oscar. Esa película, que tenía un presupuesto de 30 millones de dólares, consiguió recaudar 200 millones, lo que le abrió de par en par las puertas de la industria internacional del cine. En 2016 estrenó 'Un monstruo viene a verme', adaptación de la novela homónima de Patrick Ness, coprotagonizada por Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones y Liam Neeson. La película narra la historia de un joven (Lewis MacDougall) que debe cuidar a su madre (Felicity Jones), enferma de cáncer. Para superar esta situación, el joven entabla amistad con un monstruo (Liam Neeson). Con esta película, Bayona ganó nada menos que nueve premios Goya, y cerró su personal trilogía sobre las relaciones madre-hijo, tema que ya abordó en sus películas anteriores.

Entre sus proyectos cinematográficos, Bayona ha tenido tiempo también para hacer sus pinitos televisivos: dirigió los dos primeros episodios de la serie “Penny Dreadful”, producida por Showtime.

Para un chico de Barcelona que se colaba en los pases de prensa del Festival de Sitges haciéndose pasar por periodista, el cambio ha sido brutal. Ahora pisa los festivales, de Toronto a San Sebastián, sabiéndose deseado. Consiguió recaudar 200 millones de dólares con una película que costó 30, como 'Lo imposible', lo que le abrió de par en par las puertas de la industria internacional del cine. World: El reino caído', una superproducción de 260 millones de dólares que le consagra como el primer director español a cargo de una película de semejante presupuesto.

Tras arrasar en taquilla con 'Jurassic World', Chris Pratt y Bryce Dallas Howard se pusieron en manos de Bayona en esta secuela que acaba de llegar a nuestras pantallas y en la que sus protagonistas regresarán a la Isla Nublar. Una oportunidad que ha permitido al director español trabajar codo con codo con Steve Spielberg, creador de la franquicia.

Para Juan Antonio Bayona, admirador del cine de Spielberg, trabajar junto al maestro y creador de la saga ha sido “uno de los mejores recuerdos de mi carrera. Las expectativas estaban muy altas cuando has crecido con su cine y has aprendido casi con sus películas y de repente te sientas y empiezas a hablar con él de la historia y escuchas la cantidad de ideas que se le ocurren. Es maravilloso y siempre te hace sentir importante, que tú eres el director, no te impone ninguna idea".

Hace unos meses recibió el Premio Retrospectiva en el último Festival de Málaga, en el que también presentó 'I hate New York', un largometraje documental dirigido por Gustavo Sánchez, del que es productor ejecutivo.

A pesar del salto a Hollywood, tiene claro que él vive con un pie en el cine español, y ya augura que le apetece volver a rodar aquí y en su lengua, ya que hace diez años que no lo hace, desde 'El orfanato', una película realizada con el apoyo de Guillermo del Toro y que le puso en la órbita de un cine español que tiene que empezar a dar a conocer a sus nuevos talentos "Hay directores muy importantes que no son conocidos en el extranjero y eso es una asignatura pendiente, dar a conocer nuestro cine y estrechar lazos con el cine que se hace internacionalmente”, manifiesta.

“In This Job You Can’t Afford to Have Doubts.”

Juan Antonio Bayona was born in Barcelona on May 9, 1975, within in a humble household in the district of Trinitat Vella. His very earliest childhood memories illustrate his relationship with cinema: "The first memory I ever had was that shot where Christopher Reeve appears flying, dressed as Superman. I was three or four years old at the time and I was at the Urgell cinema in Barcelona.

Since then I’ve done whatever I can to make movies. I used to make drawings in the corners of the notebooks and flick the pages over quickly - there was already part of me that was a filmmaker even in those days. " It seemed an impossible dream for a child from a relatively rough part of Barcelona, but he never had any doubts. "I remember a conversation with a lifelong friend. I told him that I was going to sign up at film school. He gave me a slap and told me I had my head in the clouds. And my reaction to that was strange, to wonder how this guy could doubt that I was going to do what I was going to do. I was always very clear about where I was going. " So clear that the dream came true. Bayona, who sometimes seems to have written the script of his own life, says: "You have to be convinced that you're going to make it, especially in a profession as difficult as this. One can’t allow oneself to have doubts." It's something that, paradoxically, does not prevent him from feeling insecure sometimes. "You know, I still have a hard time believing that I'm a film director. When I'm asked what do I it’s only now I'm starting to say: ‘I'm a film director.’ " He studied at the Higher School of Cinema and Audiovisuals of Catalonia (ESCAC) and got his start directing television commercials and music videos for Spanish artists such as Raphael, OBK, Enrique Bunbury, Nena Daconte and Camela.

He also made several short films, and his feature film directing debut came with the Orphanage (2007), his first film, which earned him the Goya prize in Spanish cinema for best new director - a horror story starring Belén Rueda that would end up inspiring American and even Japanese versions.

His second film was The Impossible (2012), a feature film starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts that recreated the experience of a family in a tsunami, and for which he picked up an Oscar nomination. That film, which had a budget of $30 million, managed to make €200 million, numbers which opened wide the doors of the international film industry. In 2016 he premiered A Monster Calls, an adaptation of the Patrick Ness novel of the same name, co-starring Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones and Liam Neeson. The film tells the story of a young man (Lewis MacDougall) who must take care of his sick, cancer-stricken mother (Felicity Jones). To overcome this situation, the young man befriends a monster (Liam Neeson). With this film, Bayona won no less

than nine Goya awards, and returned once again to one of his pet topics, mother-child relations.

Aside from his film projects, Bayona has also had time to take his first steps in television: he directed the first two episodes of the series "Penny Dreadful", produced by Showtime.

For a guy from Barcelona who sneaked himself into the Sitges Festival posing as a journalist, the change has been radical. Now he takes his place at festivals from Toronto to San Sebastian knowing he's in demand. He managed to raise $200 million dollars with a film that cost $30 million, as The Impossible, which opened wide the doors of the international film industry. More recently he has released Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom, a $260 million production that makes him the first Spanish director to be in charge of a movie with such a large budget.

After sweeping the box office with Jurassic World, its stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard have found themselves in Bayona’s hands in the sequel which has just arrived on our screens and in which its protagonists return to Nublar Island. It’s an opportunity that has allowed the Spanish director to work hand in hand with Steve Spielberg, creator of the franchise.

For Juan Antonio Bayona, an admirer of Spielberg's cinema, working with the maestro and creator of the series was "one of the best memories of my career.

The expectations are very high when you have grown up making movies and you have learned on the job. Suddenly you sit down and start talking with him about narrative and you listen to the amount of ideas that come forth. It's wonderful and it always makes you feel important, that you are the director, that you don’t have ideas imposed on you," he explains.

A few months ago he received the Retrospective Award at the last Malaga Festival, in which he also presented "I Hate New York", a documentary directed by Gustavo Sánchez, of which he is an executive producer.

Despite the jump to Hollywood, it is clear that he lives with one foot in the world of Spanish cinema and it appears he wants to come back to his native land and film in his own language again. The last time he did so was when he made The Orphanage, with the support of Guillermo del Toro, a work that catapulted him into the higher echelons of Spanish cinema. It is a world that has to start making its new talents become better known abroad.

"There are very important directors who are not known internationally and that is a subject we have to address, to spread the word about our films and to strengthen ties with cinema from around the world ".

El delantero del Tottenham Hotspurs y de la selección inglesa se perfila como una de las grandes estrellas del próximo Mundial de Rusia pero no está solo.

En 2017 Harry Kane se coronó como máximo realizador del año con 57 goles, superando a Messi y Cristiano Ronaldo. Una hazaña que no está al alcance de cualquiera, y que pone a Kane en el punto de mira como uno de los jugadores a seguir en el próximo Mundial de Rusia. Aunque el palmarés de títulos de Kane aún está muy lejos de los de Messi y Ronaldo, su fulgurante trayectoria ya ha despertado el interés de grandes clubs, como el Real Madrid. De momento, Kane se quedará en el Tottenham Hotspur al menos una temporada más, cuando su club estrenará un nuevo y flamante estadio.

Nacido el 28 de julio de 1993, surgió de la cantera de su club y fue fichado para el Tottenham Hotspurs el 1 de julio de 2009.

Ya está entre los diez mejores goleadores de la historia de su club, y ganó la Bota de Oro como máximo goleador de la Premier League en las temporadas 2015-16 y 2016-17. Ya tiene un puesto indisputable en la selección, con la que ha marcado una docena de goles. Fue el capitán de Inglaterra por primera vez frente a Escocia en junio de 2017, y aunque se lesionó en marzo, se ha recuperado rápidamente y estará listo para el Mundial. En los Spurs tiene una cláusula de rescisión de 172 millones de libras, todo un récord para un jugador surgido de la cantera y por el que no se pagó traspaso.

Pero su trayectoria no ha sido un camino de rosas: “Dedico casi todo mi tiempo al fútbol. Llegas, te entrenas, juegas, te recuperas y descansas. Ésa es la vida de un futbolista. No me quejo. Es algo que me encanta hacer. Pero pierdes quizás la parte social de tu vida. No todos los jugadores hacen lo que yo. Algunos jugadores salen, van a cenar... ese tipo de cosas. En mi caso, para sacar lo mejor de mí, prefiero ir a casa, descansar, recuperarme, pasar tiempo con mi familia y no cometer ningún exceso”. Kane controla al máximo su dieta: “No se trata de quitarse de toda la mala comida, sino de cuándo comer qué, qué días necesitas más hidratos de carbono o más proteínas. Y eso es lo que me ayuda a recuperarme bien”.

La espectacular evolución de Kane nunca se vio venir, lo que añade atractivo a su figura; sus primeros años en el Tottenham no fueron muy gloriosos. Mientras jugaba cedido en otros equipos no obtuvo grandes números, aunque su persistencia y determinación han acabado por convertirle en un auténtico atleta. Ya ha superado la barrera de los 100 goles marcados en la Premier League (superando los 84 que marcó en su día Cristiano Ronaldo), y solo tiene 24 años.

Fan del Tottenham desde niño, y formado en la cantera local, Kane se ha convertido en la gran esperanza del fútbol inglés, que lleva décadas sin brillar demasiado en la máxima competición mundial. Entre sus pocas aficiones conocidas destaca el golf, un deporte en el que también destaca. “Tengo un handicap de 4, así que no juego mal. Durante la temporada es difícil encontrar tiempo, pero aprovecho las vacaciones para hacerlo”.

“Los sueños tienes que llevarlos a cabo tú mismo”

Kane es un luchador, y tuvieron que pasar muchos años para que se revelara como el fenómeno futbolístico que es hoy en día. “El fracaso es algo extraño cuando eres un niño. Me acuerdo como si fuera hoy de un día en que jugaba en un parque detrás de mi casa en Chingford, adonde iba con mi padre y mi hermano cada día a jugar al fútbol. Nunca marcaba y el campo no era ninguna maravilla, pero yo era feliz. Tenía 8 años, jugaba en los equipos infantiles del Arsenal. Un día mi padre me dijo que tenía algo que decirme...” La revelación de su padre era que el Arsenal había decidido prescindir de sus servicios, algo que el pequeño Kane no entendía muy bien qué significaba. Pero su padre no le criticó, y tampoco se

quejó de la decisión del equipo. Simplemente le dijo: “No te preocupes, Harry.

Trabajaremos más duro y te encontraremos otro club, ¿de acuerdo?”.

Tras salir del Arsenal, un ojeador le fichó para el Watford. Y fue en un partido contra el Tottenham cuando le ofrecieron fichar por la escuela infantil de su actual equipo. “Viéndolo en perspectiva, probablemente fue lo mejor que me ha pasado en la vida, porque aquel reto me proporcionó una determinación que no tenía antes”. Cuando el Tottenham le cedió durante dos años, inició un periplo por varios clubs y a menudo se preguntaba si conseguiría marcar un solo gol en la Premier League. Unos años sin gloria pero que Kane recuerda con humildad: “Aprendí muchas cosas. Recuerdo cuando fui al Millwall en 2012, y estábamos luchando contra el descenso. Los fans del club son muy apasionados. Era uno de mis primeros partidos, y el árbitro cometió un error. Solo uno. De repente, los fans empezaron a lanzar todo tipo de objetos al campo. Cualquier cosa, y en grandes cantidades. Se tuvo que detener el partido durante cinco minutos, hasta que la gente se calmó. La temporada avanzaba, el club no salía de la zona de descenso y algunos de sus compañeros empezaban a desesperarse. Si bajaban de categoría, sus salarios se reducirían a la mitad, o simplemente les despedirían. Eran jugadores curtidos, muchos con familias a las que mantener. Eso le dio a Kane una nueva perspectiva del deporte: “Para muchos de aquellos jugadores no se trataba simplemente de jugar al fútbol, sino que aquello era su único sustento. En el Millwall aprendí que en el fútbol todo aquello por lo que has luchado puede desaparecer en un momento. Me di cuenta de que ya no podía ser un niño. Al final conseguimos no descender, y aquella experiencia me ha dejado una gran conexión con los seguidores del Millwall. Los adoro, aunque a veces están un poco locos”.

Tras su paso por el Millwall Kane esperaba haber hecho méritos suficientes para regresar al Tottenham, pero no fue así. Le volvieron a ceder, esta vez al Leicester City. Ni siquiera allí podía conseguir plaza de titular, así que sus esperanzas de jugar para los Spurs en la Premier League parecían evaporarse. Las dudas empezaron a corroerle, y sus ánimos estaban por los suelos, pero de nuevo el apoyo de su padre y su familia consiguieron mantenerle a flote. Siguió entrenando duramente y esperando su oportunidad.

In 2017 Harry Kane was crowned top scorer of the year with 57 goals, beating Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It's not the kind of feat that just anyone can achieve and it puts Kane in the spotlight as one of the players to follow in the next World Cup in Russia. Although Kane's stack of titles is still far from those of Messi and Ronaldo, his brilliant career has already aroused the interest of big clubs like Real Madrid. For now, Kane will stay at Tottenham Hotspur for at least one more season, when his club will open a brand-new stadium.

Born on July 28, 1993, he emerged from the youth programme of his club and was signed by Spurs on July 1, 2009. He is already among the ten best goal-scorers in his club's history, and won the Golden Boot as Premier League top scorer in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. He already has an undisputed place in the national team, in which he has scored a dozen goals. He was England's captain for the first time against Scotland in June 2017, and although he was injured in March, he has recovered quickly and will be ready for the World Cup. His first years in Tottenham were not covered in glory. When Tottenham put him out on loan for two years, he began a tour of several clubs and often wondered if he would score a single goal in the Premier League. A few years without glory came and went but that Kane remembers with humility: "I learned many things. I remember when I went to Millwall in 2012, and we were fighting against relegation. The fans of that club are very passionate. It was one of my first matches, and the referee made a mistake. Only one. Suddenly, the fans started throwing all kinds of stuff onto the field. Anything, and in large quantities.

The match had to be stopped for five minutes, until people calmed down. I was only 18 years old, I was looking around and I thought it was all crazy."

The season progressed, the club did not leave the relegation zone and some of his teammates began to despair. If they went down, their salaries would be reduced by half, or they would simply be let go. These were seasoned players, many with families to support. That gave Kane a new perspective on the sport: "For many of those players it was not just about playing football, it was their only livelihood. At Millwall I learned that in football everything that you have fought for can disappear in a moment.

I realized that I wasn't a kid anymore. In the end we managed to avoid the drop, and

that experience has left me with a great connection with Millwall fans. I adore them, although sometimes they are a little crazy. " After his stay at Millwall, Kane hoped to done enough to return to Tottenham, but it was not to be. They reloaned him, this time to Leicester City. Even there he could not get a place in the starting line up, so his hopes of playing for Spurs in the Premier League seemed to be evaporating. The doubts began to eat away at him, and his spirits were in tatters, but again the support of his father and his family managed to keep him afloat. He continued training hard and waiting for his chance.

When he finally returned to Tottenham, he met the manager, André Villas-Boas. He wanted to loan Kane again to some team in the English lower leagues. Kane refused point blank.

His dream was to play in the Premier League. He went to the coach and said: "I'm going to prove that I deserve a position on the pitch. Every week you can tell me before the game that I do not deserve to be in the starting line-up, and I will accept it. But I do not want to leave this club." Villas-Boas agreed to train with the first team. Kane saw his dream within reach, but soon he realized something: "I was waiting for someone to help me fulfill my dream. But life does not work like that. You have to make dreams come true yourself."

Kane trained himself to the brink, but he could not get a start. Only when Tim Sherwood entered as coach did his luck change. "He gave me a chance, and the rest, as they say, is history. I scored three goals in my first three matches as a starter, and that feeling was incredible. But in reality, what made me who I am was what happened before that."

When Mauricio Pochettino took over the club in 2014, everything changed at Tottenham. "No one has had more impact on my career than Mauricio, not only because he brought a fantastic philosophy as a coach, but because he managed to unite the team." Pochettino has a reputation for helping his players, although if he detects a lack of commitment or an iota of laziness his hardness is also legendary.

"One of my best memories is when I scored a hat trick several seasons ago. Pochettino called me at his office. I did not know what he wanted. I opened the door and found him with a glass of red wine, a Malbec, I suppose, sitting at the table. He had a big smile on his face. He greeted me and said: 'Come in, let's take a picture'. So he hugged me and we took a picture. So I thought he was a fantastic guy. I respect him as a coach and as a boss, and now I can say that we are also true friends."

Kane is a humble and grateful type of person, one who values above all the support of those around him. In addition to your own talent, who else should you thank your achievements, he asks? He doesn’t hesitate to make a list of thanks: "My girlfriend Kate, who always supports me, especially when the results are not the best. To my father and my family, who knew how to comfort me when I had low moments in my career. To my brother Charlie, who trained hand in hand with me for thousands of hours. Also to my teammates, especially the ones who trained with me when I was not a starter and gave me encouragement. That always meant a lot to me. And, of course, Mauricio Pochettino, who has known how to make the best of me as a striker."

“You have to make your own dreams come true.”

He can't forget, of course, the Tottenham fans: "I dreamed of playing with Spurs since I was a kid. For a long time, I closed my eyes and imagined myself scoring against Arsenal in the Premier League. Now, however, other things motivate me. I dream of lifting the Premier League trophy and going far with the England team, for the joy that it would give my teammates and the fans. I would trade my next hundred goals to get that."

What is your least known talent? Being an actress. I studied at Nancy Tuñón in Barcelona and at Juan Carlos Coraza in Madrid. I have had two movie roles.

What is your least admissable habit? Every 2 years I change my life around. Just when I am more or less calm, I complicate everything again.

Where did the soccer players that appear in Love come from? We produce Love in anticipation of the World Cup. So we really wanted the music video to be something special. Los restaurantes gastronómicos florecen allende los mares y es necesario poner orden en el caos.

Listas como la The World's 50 Best Restaurants o las estrellas Michelin son un intento de poner las ideas en orden, pero la vida es imprevisible y salvaje y muchas veces sorprende con aportaciones inesperadas. Si uno se pregunta cuáles son los templos del manjar de hoy en día le vendrán a la cabeza numerosos restaurantes, mediáticos, conocidos y hasta cercanos.

Pero el Olimpo de la comida es confuso y así lo será siempre: una especie de quimera inalcanzable, imposible de abrazar de una sola vez, porque cuando se está pronunciando el nombre de un cocinero enseguida su discípulo está superándole y le adelanta por la derecha mientras escribimos estas líneas. Así, señalando que el caos es el verdadero orden y que las listas son creaciones humanas para darnos un falso control sobre las cosas, nos atrevemos a proponerle lo que en estas precisas horas (no sabemos en las siguientes) son los mejores de los mejores restaurantes del planeta Tierra.

Gastronomic restaurants are flourishing to such an extent that somehow one must try to bring order to the chaos. Lists like The World's 50 Best Restaurants or Michelin's star system are an attempt to bring a semblance of order to the hierarchy of eateries.

But life is unpredictable and wild and often surprises us with unexpected contributions. If we stop to ask ourselves to single out the high temples of today's gastronomy many high-profile and well-publicised restaurants come to mind, but deciding which is the one true Olympus of food is confusing and always will be.

It's a kind of mirage, a chimera that disappears when it gets too close. That's because as soon as the name of a cook starts to be frequently mentioned you can bet that this person's understudy is surpassing and overtaking them even as we write these lines.

Therefore, while pointing out that chaos is the true order and that the lists are human creations which only serve to give us a false sense of control, we're going dare to propose those which, at this exact moment (who knows what will come next?) are the best of the best restaurants on planet Earth.

La cocina de Mauro Colagreco propone precisamente por su situación frente al Mediterráneo un viaje entre el mar y la tierra con platos sutiles llenos de originalidad.

Central, Lima (Perú) Virgilio Martínez es el alma de este restaurante-homenaje a Perú en una búsqueda de los ingredientes más tradicionales de la rica gastronomía peruana.

Su viaje a los orígenes tiene como base un taller de investigación sin tregua.

Mirazur, Menton (France) Located on the French Riviera, this double starred restaurant comes fourth on the list of the best in the world and holds the title of best establishment in France, which is no small thing. The cuisine of Mauro Colagreco proposes, precisely because of its location in front of the Mediterranean, a trip between sea and land with subtle dishes full of originality.

Central, Lima (Peru) Virgilio Martínez is the soul of this restaurant-tribute to Peru which constantly goes in search of the most traditional ingredients from Peru's rich gastronomy.

Asador Etxebarri, Axpe (Spain) As they say in the restaurant, "far from the madding crowd", the Asador Etxebarri has an almost mythological presence at the foot of Mount Anboto. Using ancestral techniques of fire, this restaurant has been distinguished as one of the 50 best on the planet, coming sixth on the list. Thanks to its use of different types of firewood, this restaurant revolves around an innovative, traditional kitchen that uses the magic of the grill to extract numerous and surprising possibilities from ingredients, always respecting the identity of each of the products.

Gaggan, Bangkok (Thailand) Thai hospitality reaches its apotheosis at this restaurant, one of the best in the world - specifically the seventh - according to The World's 50 Best. As a matter of fact it is also the top Asian restaurant in the ranking. Chef Gaggan Anand has developed a series of suggestions that talk to each other and to the diner. As an added extra, diners receive first a list of emojis that prepares them for a trip consisting of a range of sensations.

THE BEST CASUAL CUISINE IS SPANISH The top three positions in this year's Opinionated About Dining Top 100+ Gourmet Casual Restaurant list are held by Spanish restaurants. Estimar and El Quim, both Barcelona-based, occupy first and second place respectively, while last year's winner, Ganbara, has moved to third place. In this list, the Spanish presence is notable not only on the winning podium but also among the top 50, of which 24 restaurants are Spanish. The OAD Gourmet Casual list celebrates Europe's regional culinary scene, a melting pot of different styles of cuisine, both traditional and progressive.

“Soy eficaz, creativa, exigente, ordenada, responsable, con capacidad de liderazgo, con don de gentes y muy resolutiva”. Alba no se anda por las ramas cuando le preguntas cuáles son sus mejores virtudes como bartender. Y, después de probar sus creaciones y charlar un rato con ella, entiendes que igual no está exagerando y que, además de su llamativo peinado, hay que tener muy en cuenta a esta joven profesional que manda en las barras de Nubar, porque dará mucho que hablar.

She doesn't beat around the bush when you ask her about her skills as a bartender. "I’m effective, creative, demanding, orderly, responsible. I have leadership skills, people skills and I'm also very decisive." After trying her creations and chatting to her for a while, you understand she isn't exaggerating. There is more to her than just a striking hairstyle. She's a young professional who gives the orders in the Nubar bars and should be taken seriously. People are likely to be talking about Alba for some time.

Maleada laboralmente en Costa Este, trabajó en locales como Cachitos Diagonal, Astoria, Pacha Barcelona y, finalmente Nubar, local que abrió hace unos meses en el Paseo de Gracia de Barcelona y que se ha convertido en uno de los restaurantes y bar de copas más de moda de la zona. “Fue en Pacha donde me dejaron aprender y dar el salto a la coctelería y crecer como professional en el sector”, nos matiza al tiempo que nos da las claves para ser un buen bartender: “Hay que tener creatividad, delicadeza, carisma, organización y limpieza, entre muchas de las habilidades, y desde luego, empatía con el cliente para ofrecer justo lo que busca”. En su opinión los españoles están aprendiendo a entender de coctelería poco a poco pero aún hay mucho esnobismo y , en este terreno, nos ganan de calle los italianos y americanos en conusmo y sabiduría.

Having got her start in Costa Este she has worked in places like Cachitos Diagonal, Astoria, Pacha Barcelona and finally Nubar, a place that opened a few months ago in Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona and that has become one of the most fashionable restaurants and cocktail bars in the area. "It was in Pacha where they let me learn and make the leap to cocktails and grow as a professional," she tells us while outlining the keys to being a good bartender: "You have to have creativity, delicacy, charisma, organization and be clean, among many other skills and of course you have to empathise with the client to offer just what they are looking for".

In her opinion Spain is coming to understand cocktails little by little but there is still a lot of snobbery in the field and in this area the Italians and Americans are streets ahead in terms of knowledge.

Acerca de su especialidad también lo tiene muy claro: la coctelería clásica, piña colada, Cosmopolitan, Old Fashioned... Y se nos va con una sonrisa en la boca a atender a otro cliente que espera en la barra.

Alba says the latest trend in the sector are culinary cocktails "such as Manhattan with infusion of foie gras and salted caramel, or even a cocktail version of a pizza margherita" and confesses that she has a special place in her heart for the Paradise and the Dry Martini. When it comes to her specialities she is very clear: the classic cocktails, Piña Colada, Cosmopolitan, Old Fashioned. And with that, she leaves us, smiling brightly, to attend to another client who waits at the bar.

La revolución femenina llega al 'dance' y además de demostrar con su telento que pinchan tan bien como ellos, las mujeres reclaman respeto e igualdad Por Javier Blanquez

“Ser mujer en este mundillo nunca ha sido fácil”, explicaba Olivia Nervo a la revista DJ Mag. “A muchas nos ha ocurrido que, antes de mirar la música que llevas en el ordenador, se fijan en cómo vas vestida, cómo te has peinado, si llevas falda o no” asegura.

Junto a su hermana Miriam, Olivia es una de las muchas mujeres beneficiadas tanto por las corrientes feministas en la música de club como por la comprensión de buena parte de la escena.

“Tenemos que hacer el esfuerzo por conceder más terreno, invitar a las chicas a pinchar con nosotros, a dejar más espacio en los festivales para ellas”, decía hace poco Steve Aoki, quien se considera un “feminista y un aliado de corazón”.

“Con el machismo hay que convivir. A mí, por ejemplo, muchas veces me han presentado como la novia de Dimitri Vegas”, explicaba la belga Mattn en el portal Resident Advisor. “¿La novia de quién? ¿Y por qué no presentan a Dimitri como mi novio?

Por suerte, cada vez hay más promotores y un público más concienciado de que somos personas, no objetos” Seguramente, en 2018 no sería posible una operación de marketing como la que protagonizó en 2015 la marca de gafas de sol Hawkers, que compró espacios de privilegio en el cartel de varios festivales importantes para presentar a una artista, Madds, que en realidad sólo era un anuncio –en su caso, también una mujer florero–.

Incluso algunas DJs que han triunfado en la EDM después de trabajar como stripper o en la industria del porno, como Jade Laroche o Carter Cruise, han conseguido que se les valore por su selección, y no sólo por su físico.

“Es muy duro que al principio sólo te presten atención por tu cuerpo”, decía Laroche. “Pero yo soy así, es mi naturaleza. ¿Debo mostrarme menos atractiva porque a alguien le pueda molestar? ¿Soy menos buena por ser guapa?”. Al final, el atractivo físico no es un factor decisivo, porque aunque al principio pueda ayudar, y ser un catalizador de bookings, el público en los festivales reacciona ante la música, no ante las fotos de promoción. “Pinchamos en escenarios enormes y tenemos a miles de personas delante. ¿Quién me va a ver a mí? Si soy una figura minúscula ahí a lo lejos”, contaba Mattn. “Si alguien se cree que es mi aspecto lo que cuenta en ese momento, es que no ha estado nunca en una fiesta. Es mi música la que vuelve loca al público, no mi maquillaje o mi ropa” reclama.

Lo que justifica el enfado de The Black Madonna al que aludíamos al principio: si después de haber trabajado una técnica y reunir una cantidad de música que defina una personalidad propia alguien viene a menospreciar tu trabajo sólo por ser mujer, es que algo sigue fallando en la escena. Y aunque no se han destapado casos de abusos, acoso o violaciones en la familia dance, los comportamientos despectivos todavía siguen ahí. Cada vez más arrinconados, cada vez más marginales. “Lo que somos nos lo hemos ganado con nuestro esfuerzo”, sostienen las hermanas Nervo. “Nos hemos dejado la piel. Vale, cuidamos nuestro aspecto, nos gustan las buenas marcas de ropa, queremos sentirnos guapas, pero cuando pinchamos eso no importa, porque sudamos, se nos ensucia todo y se nos corre el maquillaje. La gente quiere que te vaya la vida concluyen en lo que haces, y en eso estamos”.

El año pasado, la música de baile empezó a rebelarse como nunca contra el machismo en la escena. El detonante fueron unas declaraciones de Konstantin, un DJ alemán asociado al sello Giegling, cuando dijo en una entrevista que ninguna mujer podía pinchar mejor que un hombre. Las respuestas más enérgicas no se hicieron esperar: The Black Madonna, una de las nuevas estrellas del house de Chicago, se erigió portavoz de la dignidad de las mujeres DJ's y le dio un rapapolvo muy serio al hombre de la barba. Fue un gesto importante porque años antes, cuando buena parte del público criticaba a la DJ rusa Nina Kraviz por bailar en el escenario y hacerse fotos sexys, casi nadie salió en su defensa. Ahora ya nadie se calla, empezando por Björk y continuando por las nuevas figuras que han tomado al asalto las cabinas y los mejores slots en festivales de todo el mundo: Lena Willikens, Charlotte de Witte o Helena Hauff son la vanguardia de una corriente –la de las mujeres superestrella, tanto en el underground como en el mainstream– que ha venido para quedarse. The feminine revolution has come to dance and female DJs are demanding respect and equality as well as the chance to show off their musical talents.

The trigger point came from a statement by Konstantin, a German DJ associated with the Giegling label, when he said in an interview that no woman DJ could outdo a man. It didn’t take long for the outrage to erupt. The Black Madonna, one of the new stars of Chicago house, became the first person to represent female DJs and to slap down the bearded accuser. It was an important gesture because years before, when a large section of the public criticized the Russian DJ Nina Kraviz for dancing on stage and taking sexy photos, almost no one came to her defence. Now it seems almost nobody is silent, ranging from Björk to the new figures who have led the assault on the booths and best slots at festivals around the world. Lena Willikens, Charlotte de Witte or Helena Hauff are at the vanguard of a current of superstar women, both in the underground and in the mainstream, which has come to stay. The MeToo movement also occupies the dance floor.

"Being a woman in this world has never been easy," Olivia Nervo explained to DJ Mag magazine.

"It happens to all of us all the time. Before looking at the music on your computer, you check to see how you are dressed, how you have brushed your hair, if you’re wearing a skirt or not. " Along with her sister Miriam, Olivia is one of the many women who are benefitting both from feminist currents

in club music and from the understanding which now exists within a good part of the scene. "We have to make the effort to grant more room, invite the women to play with us, to leave more space in the festivals for them," said Steve Aoki, who considers himself a "feminist and an ally at heart".

"When it comes to sexism, we have to live together.

For example, many times I have been introduced as the girlfriend of Dimitri Vegas," explained the Belgian Mattn on the portal ResidentAdvisor.

"Whose girlfriend? Why don’t you introduce Dimitri as my boyfriend? Luckily, there are more and more promoters and a public increasingly aware that we are people, not objects." You would think that in 2018 it would not be possible to have a marketing operation like the one in 2015 that featured sunglasses brand Hawkers, which bought premium poster space at several important festivals to present an artist, Madds, only to show off her looks. Even some DJs who have triumphed in EDM after working as a stripper or in the porn industry, such as Jade Laroche or Carter Cruise, have managed to be valued for their track selection, and not just for their physique.

El gran salto que ha emprendido Costa Este con sus recientes aperturas en Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella y Londres, cuentan con la firma de Ramón Bordas Jr., un fichaje estratégico dentro de la familia para pilotar esta fase de crecimiento. Sus cuatro años trabajando para JP Morgan como especialista en fusiones y adquisiciones lo avalan como una persona sobradamente preparada para el puesto.

The big leap that Costa Este has undertaken with its recent openings in Madrid, Barcelona and, in addition, Marbella and London, bears the signature of Ramón Bordas Jr, a strategic signing from within the family who will take the wheel behind this phase of growth. Historias para no dormir

Tras su primer éxito en la Chatarra del campo del Español, Costa Este vivió unos años de varios cambios de ubicación hasta conseguir un asentamiento estable en Torre Melina.

DE LA CHATARRA A TORRE MELINA La gran acogida que tuvo el primer año de la Chatarra en el antiguo Campo del Español (1990) puso a Costa Este en el mapa de la noche de Barcelona y presagiaba tiempos de tranquilidad para su promotores después de superar una larga carrera de obstáculos. Pero pronto quedó claro que la estabilidad tardaría en llegar cuando casi al año justo de abrir puertas el Ayuntamiento, les denegó el permiso para continuar.

Todo ello y a a pesar de la gran inversión que se tuvo que hacer allí y con un contrato firmado por varias temporadas con el RC Español. Los hermanos Bordas se vieron obligados de la noche a la mañana a trasladar el negocio a una nueva ubicación que encontraron finalmente en la zona universitaria, con la promesa de poder seguir allí mucho tiempo.

Sería la segunda vida del proyecto que esta vez llamaron Chatarra de la Universidad. Allí, tras su apresurado traslado que no terminó hasta primeros de julio, instalaron su enorme y emblemática carpa y una gran gama de chiringuitos que servían comida y copas con músicas para todos los gustos en un horario que se estiraba hasta las 5 de la madrugada. El negocio volvió a funcionar como un tiro y a atraer a la juventud de la zona alta, convirtiéndose, junto al Up and Down, en el lugar de encuentro por excelencia durante los Juegos Olímpicos. Atletas e ilustres visitantes aparecían cada noche luciendo sus medallas o en sus increíbles limusinas, como el Príncipe Alberto, Magic Johnson, Serguei Bubka, Epi, Fermín Cacho y otros muchos que lo convirtieron en su lugar de diversión de aquellas mágicas e inolvidables noches. Pero la suerte volvió a serles esquiva y al cabo de dos años desde su asentamiento tuvieron que buscar nueva ubicación por el antojo del gerente de la universidad, el sr Josep Roig, que renunció al importante ingreso para su institución que suponía

el alto canon que pagaba Costa Este. Esta vez sería en los campos del antiguo Canódromo de la Diagonal donde entraron con nuevo equipo.

Ramón y Javier pensaron que a la tercera seria la vencida pero el propietario del espacio, el "Doctor Radi", tras acordar una ocupación de tres años, lo redujo el día de la firma a un contrato por solo seis meses, dando su palabra de prorrogarlo hasta el plazo pactado. Sin alternativa posible decidieron firmar y cuidar todos los detalles al máximo para mantener la plaza. En aquel momento ya apostaban por unas Carpas que estuvieran abiertas todo el año y no solo en verano como hasta la fecha, volvieron a recuperar su público y a demostrar que tenían la fórmula del éxito.

Todo parecía ir por buen camino hasta que Oriol Regás, tras su sonado fracaso en el Tropical y necesitado de un éxito rehabilitador, se interpuso en su camino. Conocedor por el director del Canódromo y antiguo trabajador suyo, de la buena marcha del complejo, consiguió arrebatarles la concesión al término del semestre pactado. Los hermanos recibieron un fax el mismo día 31 de diciembre a última hora, rescindiendo el contrato sin mayor explicación. Aquello parecía el fin, después de tres mudanzas consecutivas en tan poco tiempo. Pero lejos de echarse atrás volvieron a buscar espacios por la ciudad y esta vez el destino se alió con ellos encontrando una nueva ubicación muy cerca del Hotel Juan Carlos I. Eran los terrenos de Torre Melina que dieron nombre a su nuevo proyecto, un gigantesco espacio lúdico al aire libre, donde se quedarían diez años y desde el que volvieron a reinar en la noche, haciendo la competencia a su viejo rival que iba languideciendo en el que en su día fue un lugar de éxito.

Stories to keep sleep at bay

After the early success of Chatarra in the old Español stadium, Costa Este spent several years undergoing several changes of location until settling in Torre Melina.

FROM LA CHATARRA TO TORRE MELINA The great reception that Chatarra saw in its first year at the old Español stadium back in 1990 put East Coast on the nightlife map of Barcelona and it looked like its promoters could relax after completing a long obstacle course. But soon it became clear that stability would take longer to arrive when almost a year after opening doors the City Council denied the club permission to continue. This was despite the great investment that been made there and the contract signed for several seasons with club itself. The Bordas brothers were forced to move the business overnight to a new location they finally found in the university area, with the promise of being able to stay there for a long time. It would be a second life for a project that this time would be dubbed University Junk (Chatarra de la Universidad). There, after a hasty transfer that did not end until the beginning of July, they installed their huge and emblematic tent and a wide range of beach bars that served food and drinks with music for all tastes until 5 in the morning. The business once again worked like clockwork and, attracting the youth of the uptown Barcelona, it became, together with the Up and Down, the meeting place par excellence during the Olympic Games. Athletes and illustrious visitors appeared every night wearing their medals or arriving in their incredible limousines. People such as Prince Albert, Magic Johnson, Serguei Bubka, Epi, Fermin Cacho and many others made it their place of entertainment during those magical and unforgettable nights. But luck was again elusive and after two years the brothers once again had to find a new location due to the whim of the manager of the university, Mr. Josep Roig, who was prepared to forgo the important income that the high fees Costa Este paid meant for his

institution. This time it would be in the fields of the old Dog Racing stadium in Diagonal where they placed new equipment. Javier and Ramón thought that it would be third time lucky but the owner of the space, after agreeing on a three-year occupation, reduced it on the day of signing to a contract to only six months, giving his word to extend it until the agreed term. Without any alternative the brothers decided to sign and do what they could to keep the location. At that time, they decided to bet on tents that were open all year, not only in summer, and they regained their public and showed that they had the formula for success.

Everything seemed to be on track until Oriol Regás, after his resounding failure with Tropical and in need of a rehabilitative success, got in the way.

Known to the director of the Dog Track, a former colleague, he managed to snatch the concession at the end of the agreed period. The brothers received a fax the same day, December 31, at the last minute, rescinding the contract without further explanation. That seemed to be the end, after three consecutive moves in such a short time. But far from backing down they went back to look for spaces around the city and this time destiny helped them find a new location very close to the Hotel Juan Carlos I. They were near to Torre Melina and this space gave the name to their new project, a gigantic playful outdoor location where they would stay for ten years and from which they reigned again at night, competing with their old rival who was languishing in a place which had once housed a success.

Términos como criptomoneda o blockchain se han convertido en poco tiempo en las palabras de moda en el mundo de las finanzas. Con conocimientos económicos o no, la gente está empezando a darse cuenta de que Bitcoin y Ethereum pueden ser un filón.

Invertir y comerciar con monedas electrónicas está convirtiéndose en la última novedad en cuanto a las criptomonedas y, aunque todavía no es tarde para subirse al tren, encontrar el modo de hacerlo puede resultar una tarea ardua.

Para hacerte una idea: un bitcoin (la criptomoneda más en boga actualmente) llegó a cotizarse a más de 17.000 dólares a finales de 2017, y a lo largo de este año ha fluctuado entre los 66.000 y los 14.000. Es decir, está en una fase de alta volatilidad. Aunque la tecnología de cadena de bloques o blockchain aún está en pañales, pronto se convertirá en algo que todo el mundo usará sin saber muy bien cómo. Para mucha gente será como volver a 1994, cuando Internet o el correo electrónico todavía estaban en desarrollo. ¿En qué consiste la inversión y el comercio con criptomonedas?

Emma Poposka, directora general de la empresa de gestión de criptomonedas BronTech, explica lo diferente que es la inversión y el comercio en lo que respecta a las criptomonedas y su gran punto en común: cada vez están más extendidas por todo el mundo: “El significado literal de invertir en criptomonedas, en términos sencillos, es comprar un determinado número de criptomonedas y esperar hasta que su valor aumente. El comercio con criptomonedas es similar al comercio con divisas tradicionales (Forex): los agentes operan con divisas por Internet”, resume Poposka.

En otras palabras: si compras una criptomoneda con la esperanza de que aumente su valor para obtener beneficios cuando la vendas, eres un inversor. En cambio, si lo que quieres es intercambiar criptomonedas (bitcoins por ether, por ejemplo) con la esperanza de mantener el mayor valor posible acorde con la especulación del mercado (como sucede en bolsa), eres un agente y estás comerciando. ¿Qué criptomonedas puedes adquirir?

Hay miles de criptomonedas diferentes, con mayor o menor valor y popularidad, y cada día hay nuevas opciones. Dicho esto, hay que destacar las dos divisas digitales más extendidas y rentables: Bitcoin y Etherum Bitcoin Bitcoin es un tipo de criptomoneda nacida y sostenida de forma electrónica. Nadie la controla. No se imprimen como los dólares o los euros: la genera la gente, y cada vez más las empresas y ordenadores de todo se dedican a la minería de bitcoins, lo que requiere una alta capacidad de computación.

Como moneda digital, Bitcoin fue la primera y la más importante que utilizó la tecnología de blockchain, lo cual quiere decir que está descentralizada, sin que ninguna persona o institución la pueda manipular, y basa la verificación de las transacciones en la interacción entre iguales. Aunque la cotización del bitcoin alcance los miles de euros por unidad, son muy divisibles, así que no hace falta gastarse tanto. Bitcoin,

como primera gran criptomoneda, se diseñó como alternativa a las divisas tradicionales de monedas y billetes (dinero fiduciario) y, en principio, solo iba a ser utilizada para realizar compras por Internet.

Lo que el creador de Bitcoin, Saitoshi Nakamoto, pretendía hacer es crear una criptomoneda que no pudieran manipular los bancos centrales ni ningún otro banco, que estuviera completamente descentralizada. Su propósito inicial era servir como divisa, una alternativa al dinero fiduciario. Es un sistema de contabilidad simple que puede servir de sustituto del sistema de contabilidad actual, el del dinero físico.

Ethereum Aquí las cosas se complican un poco. Aunque Ethereum esté catalogado como una criptomoneda al estilo de Bitcoin, Lachlan Feeney, desarrollador de blockchain en Civic Ledger, una empresa que emplea esta tecnología para solucionar problemas del sector público, asegura que es mucho más que eso.

Según explica, Ethereum puede describirse como el siguiente escalón de Internet basado en tecnología de blockchain, una herramienta que permitirá a la gente desarrollar de forma completamente descentralizada sus propias aplicaciones, negocios y proyectos en los que podrán invertir los usuarios. "Ethereum es muy complicado de definir, es más bien un tipo de tecnología.

La gente lo llama criptomoneda, porque es el término general que se usa para referirse a este tipo de cosas, pero Ethereum no está aquí para quitarle el sitio a los dólares", comenta. "Ethereum es el siguiente escalón de Internet, el salto de las aplicaciones centralizadas a descentralizadas. Ethereum es un concepto muy amplio, porque no sirve solo para una cosa. Es una base y una plataforma sobre la que la gente puede desarrollar, programar y producir la próxima ola de aplicaciones", afirma el experto.

Es decir, que Ethereum está clasificado como un tipo de criptomoneda, pero tiene más que ver con las herramientas y la tecnología que ofrece para que todo aquel que lo desee pueda crear básicamente lo que le apetezca. En esencia, es como cuando se em-

plea Internet como base para crear páginas web como Facebook, salvo que con Ethereum las posibilidades son mucho más amplias: desde un proyecto de casino en línea hasta digitalizar proveedores eléctricos.

En resumidas cuentas, la tecnología de Ethereum ofrece tres posibilidades: invertir dinero tradicional en su criptomoneda (conocida como Ether) igual que en Bitcoin, adquirir negocios o proyectos elaborados con su tecnología interna a través de lo que se conoce como Oferta Inicial de Monedas (ICO en inglés) o crear algo tú mismo. ¿Qué riesgos tiene?

El riesgo principal a la hora de invertir y comerciar con criptomonedas es la volatilidad de los mercados actuales. Tampoco hay que olvidar los riesgos de seguridad que hay en torno a los monederos digitales, así como el hecho de que el valor de las criptomonedas puede fluctuar enormemente, con repentinos picos y caídas, dependiendo de múltiples factores.

"El mercado es altamente volátil, y eso es lo primero que tenemos que tener en cuenta. Hay multitud de riesgos. En el pasado, el principal riesgo fue la piratería, que llegó a tomar el control de carteras de usuarios y de los mercados que las guardan. Otro asunto distinto es la volatilidad del mercado. Suele haber periodos de enorme volatilidad e importantes depreciaciones de la divisa de un país debido a sucesos importantes. Por ejemplo, con el Brexit, la libra bajó mucho y Bitcoin experimentó un pico de valor", advierte. ¿Qué es un monedero digital?

Los monederos digitales funcionan exactamente del mismo modo que un monedero físico: sirve para guardar criptomonedas, solo que están digitalizados mediante códigos y también te permiten guardar otros archivos.

La mayoría de los monederos digitales funcionan mediante tecnología de cadenas de bloques, vienen en forma de aplicaciones para móviles y funcionan de un modo similar a la banca digital actual, pero sin la necesidad de un organismo centralizado que lo controle, en este caso, un banco.

Existen dos tipos principales de monederos digitales: un tipo son los monederos en frío, que no se

almacenan en la red, sino en una dirección única de criptomonedas que vinculas a otra dirección única, tu monedero digital, y que puedes almacenar en un disco duro sin conexión. Y los monederos calientes que se usan en línea, por ejemplo, a través de aplicaciones para móviles, que se emplean para comerciar.

Ambos tipos de monederos tienen sus riesgos, ya que los monederos calientes suelen ser más susceptibles de robo digital, pero también se han perdido monederos en frío porque los han tirado sin querer o porque se ha estropeado el dispositivo. ¿Qué es una Oferta Inicial de Monedas (ICO)?

En pocas palabras, las ICO son campañas de crowdfunding creadas por futuros empresarios o fundadores de proyectos para recaudar los fondos que necesitan para sacar al mercado sus proyectos. El proceso conlleva enviar criptomonedas, como bitcoins o ether, a un proyecto sustentado por la tecnología de blockchain a cambio de créditos digitales relacionados con el proyecto. Estos créditos pueden emplearse para involucrarte en el proyecto una vez que esté en marcha o para obtener diversos tipos de participación, pero no garantizan una participación accionaria.

Las ICO son inversiones altamente especulativas, prácticamente sin ningún tipo de regulación y el riesgo de perder el capital invertido es alto. ¿Merece la pena arriesgarse?

Al final, depende del criterio de cada inversor o agente. Nadie debería invertir un dinero que no podría permitirse perder. Igual que en el mercado de valores, las cosas pueden salir mal, y estos son nuevos negocios y nuevas iniciativas.

La gente percibe la fiebre del oro que estamos viviendo con la criptomoneda y está llevando a cabo mucha especulación y asumiendo muchos riesgos, y muchas de las nuevas monedas han resultado ser estafas. Se trata de un territorio inexplorado para todos. Aún estamos tratando de descubrir qué es lo que hace que funcione y ante qué reacciona, pero hablando a largo plazo, es un avance muy emocionante. La capitalización de

mercado de Bitcoin ya supera a la de Goldman Sachs y Morgan Stanley. El dinero del futuro ya está aquí.

La tecnología es una fuerza que no se puede detener. De aquí a 10 o 15 años, siga existiendo Bitcoin o no, la tecnología de blockchain tendrá un enorme impacto sobre la economía y el modo en que funcionan los negocios. Las cadenas de bloques cambiarán el mundo, entiendas la tecnología o no, pero va a hacer falta un tiempo hasta que la gente lo empiece a aceptar.

OTROS USOS DE LA TECNOLOGÍA BLOCKCHAIN

Carrefour acaba de anunciar que sus tiendas en Francia van a valerse del blockchain para mejorar los controles sobre la procedencia de productos perecederos. La cadena francesa prevé poner en marcha esta medida a finales de año, con la que podrá registrar de forma inmediata la cadena de producción de estos productos y mejorar así su trazabilidad. Otras grandes distribuidoras alimentarias como Nestlé o Unilever han anunciado planes similares.

De Beer, gigante del sector de los diamantes, también ha hecho acto de fe en las nuevas tecnologías, y pretende lanzar este año el primer proyecto en el sector de las piedras preciosas para registrar cada momento en el que las gemas cambian de manos, empezando por su extracción inicial y acabando en el punto de venta. En Estonia, el Gobierno se enorgullece de usar la cadena de bloques para registros públicos tan relevantes como el del sistema sanitario, judicial y legislativo; y planea ampliar su aplicación a otras áreas como la ciberseguridad. El año pasado, la filial estonia de Nasdaq desarrolló un sistema para que los accionistas de la compañía votaran a través de blockchain. Y hace tiempo que en otros países se discute sobre la posibilidad de aplicar esta tecnología a votaciones internas de partidos o elecciones convencionales.

Terms such as cryptocurrency or blockchain have rapidly become buzzwords in the world of finance. It isn't just limited to those in the know: people are beginning to realize that Bitcoin and Ethereum could be a gold mine.

To get an idea: a bitcoin (the cryptocurrency most in vogue today) came to be quoted at more than $17,000 at the end of 2017, and throughout this year it has fluctuated between $66,000 and $14,000. Essentially, it is in a phase of high volatility. Although blockchain or blockchain technology is still in its infancy, it will soon become something that everyone will use without really knowing how. For many people it will be like going back to 1994, when the Internet or email was still in development.

What is the investment and trade in cryptocurrencies?

Emma Poposka, general director of the cryptocurrency management company BronTech, explains how investment and trade are different when it comes to cryptocurrencies and sets out what they have in common: that they are becoming more widespread all over the world: "The literal meaning of investing in cryptocurrencies, in simple terms, is to buy a certain number of cryptocurrencies and wait until their value increases. Trading with cryptocurrencies is similar to trading with traditional currencies (Forex): agents operate currencies through the Internet," Poposka says. What cryptocoins can you buy?

There are thousands of different cryptocurrencies, with varying value and popularity, and every day there are new options. That said, there are two clear front runners when it comes to the most widespread and profitable digital currencies: Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Bitcoin Bitcoin is a type of cryptocurrency born and maintained electronically. Nobody controls it. They are not printed like dollars or euros but are generated by people and more and more companies and computers are dedicated to bitcoin mining, which requires a high computing capacity. As a digital currency, Bitcoin was the first and the most important in terms of using blockchain technology, which means that it is decentralized, without any person or institution being able to manipulate it, and it bases the verification of its transactions on peer interaction. Although the price of bitcoin reaches thousands of euros per unit, they are easily dividible, so you do not have

to spend that much. Bitcoin, as the first large cryptocurrency, was designed as an alternative to the traditional currency currencies and banknotes (hard cash) and, originally was only going to be used to make purchases over the Internet.

What the creator of Bitcoin, Saitoshi Nakamoto, intended to do was create a cryptocurrency that could not be manipulated by central banks or any other bank, that was completely decentralized.

Its initial purpose was to serve as a currency, an alternative to fiat money. It is a simple accounting system that can serve as a substitute for the current accounting system, that of physical money.

Ethereum Here things get a little complicated.

Although Ethereum is listed as a bitcoin-style cryptocurrency, Lachlan Feeney, blockchain developer at Civic Ledger, a company that uses this technology to solve public sector problems, says it is much more than that.

He explains that Ethereum can be described as the next step of the Internet based on blockchain technology, a tool that will allow people to develop their own applications, businesses and projects in a completely decentralized way, where users can invest: "Ethereum is very complicated It's more of a kind of technology. People call it cryptocurrency because it's the general term used to refer to this kind of thing, but Ethereum is not here to take the place of dollars," he says.

"Ethereum is the next step on the Internet, the leap from centralized to decentralized applications, Ethereum is a very broad concept because it does not do only one thing, it is a base and a platform on which people can develop, program and produce the next wave of applications," he adds. That is to say, Ethereum is classified as a type of cryptocurrency, but it has more to do with the tools and technology it offers so that anyone who wants to can basically create whatever they want.

In essence, it is like when the Internet is used as a base to create web pages like Facebook, except that with Ethereum the possibilities are much broader: from an online casino project to digitizing electrical suppliers.

What risks do you face?

The main risk when it comes to investing and trading in cryptocurrencies is the volatility of current markets. Nor should we forget the security risks that surround digital wallets, as well as the fact that the value of cryptocurrencies can fluctuate enormously, with sudden spikes and drops, depending on multiple factors.

"The market is highly volatile, and that's the first thing we have to take into account, there are a lot of risks. In the past, the main risk has been piracy, which has led to pirates taking control of user portfolios and users. There are usually periods of enormous volatility and significant depreciation of a country's currency due to important events, for example, with Brexit the pound sank and Bitcoin experienced a peak of value," he says.

What is a digital wallet?

Digital wallets work in exactly the same way as a physical wallet: they are used to store cryptocurrencies but are only digitized by codes allow you to save other files. In short, ICOs are crowdfunding campaigns created by future entrepreneurs or project founders to raise the funds they need to market their projects. The process involves sending cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoins or ether, to a project supported by blockchain technology in exchange for digital credits related to the project. These credits can be used to get involved in the project once it is underway or to obtain different types of participation, but they do not guarantee an equity share.

ICOs are highly speculative investments, practically without any regulation and the risk of losing the invested capital is high.

Is it worth the risk?

In the end, it depends on the criteria of each investor or agent. Nobody should invest money that they can’t afford to lose. As in the stock market, things can go wrong, and these are new businesses and new initiatives. People are seeing the gold rush that is seizing the world of cryptocurrency and are indulging in speculation and taking many risks, and many of the new currencies have turned out to be scams. It is an unexplored territory for everyone. We are still trying to find out what makes it work and what makes it react, but looking at the long term, it is a very exciting prospect.

The market capitalization of Bitcoin already surpasses that of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. The money of the future is already here. Technology is a force that cannot be stopped. In 10 or 15 years from now whether or not Bitcoin still exists, blockchain technology will have a huge impact on the economy and the way business works. Blockchains will change the world, whether you understand technology or not, but it will take time for people to start accepting it.

Al mando del flamante nuevo Opium Londres, Eamonn Mulholland está un gran conocedor de la noche londinense que nos da las claves del nuevo local

El paso mas importante en la historia de Costa Este debía también ir acompañado de un fichaje de campanillas para llevar las riendas del proyecto. Ese es Eamonn Mulholland, un tipo elegante y discreto, nacido en Belfast, instalado hace veinte años en Londres y curtido en los mejores locales nocturnos, como el Mnky Hse en Mayfair.

“Me considero una persona muy práctica y enfocada en su trabajo, pero también me gusta desconectar a veces, e ir a montar a caballo con mi familia”, nos comenta el manager de Opium, que no ha podido disfrutar de mucho tiempo libre últimamente con la locura de la apertura.

El nuevo Opium, situado en pleno Picadilly Circus, es una discoteca pensada para unas 600 personas, con un restaurante con capacidad para 100 comensales y Dj propio. Los dos ambientes están unidos por un comedor privado. ”Hubo una nueva tendencia en Londres durante el año pasado de tener un restaurante que evoluciona hasta convertirse en club. En Opium podemos expandir esto, al brindarle al cliente dos ambientes completamente diferentes que le permiten moverse entre ambos sin tener que abandonar el lugar” explica. La decoración es Estrella Salietti y Pepe López de Futur 2, el prestigioso tandem que suele encargarse del interiorismo de Costa Este. “Esperamos atraer a un grupo importante de gente de 20 en adelante con una apuesta musical diferente de la que se repite en la ciudad y con la calidad de nuestro restaurante. Queremos que estén tan a gusto que no deseen salir en toda la noche de aquí.” explica.

“Finalmente, las reglas del éxito están claras: buena música y un lugar espectacular donde la gente se sienta a gusto para ver y ser vistos, y eso se lo vamos a dar. Londres, es junto a Miami, Las Vegas, Hong Kong e Ibiza la ciudad más importante de la noche en el mundo y esperamos que Opium sea pronto uno de los clubs mas relevantes del mundo también” afirma Mulholland.

It's only right that the most important step in the history of Costa Este should also be accompanied by a major signing brought in to take the reins of the project. That man is Eamonn Mulholland, an elegant and discreet native of Belfast, who settled twenty years ago in London and earned his spurs in the best nightspots like the Mnky Hse in Mayfair.

"I consider myself a very practical person and focused on my work, but I also like to disconnect at times and go riding with my family" says the Opium manager, who has not been able to enjoy much free time lately due to the opening.

The new Opium, located in Piccadilly Circus, is a nightclub designed for 600 people and has a restaurant with a capacity of 100 diners and its own DJ. The two environments are linked by private dining room. "We started to see a new trend in London last year of having a restaurant that evolves into a club. At Opium we can expand this idea by giving the customer two completely different environments that allow him to move from one to the other without having to leave the place." Decor is by Estrella Salietti and Pepe Lopez from Futur 2 - the same prestigious duo that is usually tasked with interior design by Costa Este. "We hope to attract an important group of people age twenty onwards with slightly different music to the kind you hear over and over again across the city and with the quality of our restaurant. We want people to be so comfortable that they want to stay here all night."

He already knows which notes have to be hit to triumph in the world of nightlife: "The rules of success are clear: provide good music and a spectacular place where people feel comfortable to see and be seen.

What is about masks that fascinate us so much? Since its inception electronic music has toyed, as an underground product, with anti-marketing. Nacido en Bassani, Italia, combina elementos del EDM y el ElectroHouse con el hardcore y el punk, escenas de las que proviene. He has collaborated with formerly masked Burial.

De 0 a 100 en sólo dos años. El alemán Redshape apareció como un huracán allá por 2006 y, desde entonces, se ha convertido en uno de los artistas de referencia de la escena techno berlinesa. La calidad y buen gusto de sus producciones y remixes se puede deducir de la selecta lista de sellos en los que ha publicado: MAS, Delsin, Music Man... ¿sus shows? Una apisonadora.

Redshape From 0 to 100 in just two years. The German Redshape appeared as a hurricane back in 2006 and since then has become one of the mainstays of the Berlin techno scene. The quality and good taste of his productions and remixes can be deduced from the select list of labels in which he has recorded: MAS, Delsin, Music Man ... His shows? A steamroller.

En cada empresa hay personas que, a pesar de moverse en un segundo plano, son casi imprescindibles. Como ese medio centro de un equipo de fútbol que hace el trabajo oscuro que poca gente reconoce, pero que el entrenador siempre necesita y alaba. Ése sería el papel de Mohamed en Costa Este. Llegó a Barcelona, procedente de Marruecos a finales de los 80 y, tras un tiempo de trabajar para su tío, conoció a Ramón Bordas una noche de 1999. Fue en una fiesta de Jack Daniels, en la Chatarra, donde organizaban un concurso premiado con 25.000 pesetas para la persona que aguantara mas tiempo subida a un toro mecánico. Todos los concursantes salían disparados a los pocos segundos. Pero ahí llego Mohamed, necesitado de aquel dinero, se aferró como un poseso al caballo y no hubo forma de tirarlo. “Me quedé hasta sin uñas pero gané el premio” . Esa noche su vida cambió.

Ramón lo llamó al dia siguiente para ficharlo como jefe de obras. Necesitaba reformar el Regine’s para convertirlo en el Jymmyz en el Hotel Reina Sofía. Mohamed reunió a su cuadrilla y completó la obra en un tiempo récord con lo que se ganó la confianza para siempre de los Bordas y se convirtió en el artífice de los grandes locales que vinieron después: Torre Melina, Astoria, Universal, Búcaro etc. Recuerda con risas la reforma del Baja Beach, que se convirtieró en el primer Opium, trabajando con el local abierto al público y consiguiendo que nadie se incomodase.

Every company has people who, despite moving in the background, are almost essential. Like that centre half in a football team who quietly carries out the unheralded work few spectators recognize, but that the coach always sees and praises, that would be the role of Mohamed at Costa Este. He arrived in Barcelona from Morocco in the late 80's and, after working initially for his uncle, met Ramón Bordas one night in 1990. It was at a party thrown by Jack Daniels, in Scrap, which was currently holding a contest with a 25,000 peseta prize for the person who could hold on for the longest to a mechanical bull.

All the contestants were thrown after a few seconds. But then came Mohamed, in need of the money, who was prepared to cling to the bull like a madman and refused to throw it away.

"I lost my fingernails but I won the prize." That night his life changed. Ramón called him the next day to sign him as head of works. He needed to reform what was then Regine's to turn it into the Jymmyz at the Reina Sofía Hotel. Mohamed got his crew together and completed the work in a record time - a move which won him the Bordas' trust forever and he became the architect of the great venues that came after: Torre Melina, Astoria, Universal, Búcaro etc. Remember with laughter the reform of Baja Beach, which became the first Opium, working with the premises open to the public and making sure nobody was uncomfortable.

“Mi posición en la empresa es el corazón de la misma.

Cuando estoy las cosas van rápidas y van bien. Las fechas de apertura las doy yo, no Ramón" nos dice sin borrar esa sonrisa que lleva siempre puesta. “Creo que mi éxito se debe a que siempre hago bien el trabajo que me piden. Me considero un tipo legal y directo que ayuda siempre a la gente que me ayuda. En las inauguraciones siempre conseguimos que todo parezca mucho mejor de lo que está y nadie se da cuenta de si hay un defecto aquí o allá. Mi local favorito es el Opium Barcelona, el emblema de la casa” Moha reconoce que por culpa de su trabajo se ha perdido momentos importantes de su vida familiar y de nuevo entre risas cuenta que la mujer de Ramón siempre dice que éste pasa más tiempo con él que con ella”. A pesar de ello se siente feliz de estar en esta casa “Me siento uno de ellos” dice con satisfaccion.

"My position in the company is at the heart of it. When I'm doing things, they move fast and they go well. The opening dates are given by me, not Ramón," he says without erasing the smile that always seem to be on his face. "I think my success come down to the fact that I always do the job they ask me to do well. I consider myself a straightforward and direct type that always helps the people who help me. At the openings we always make everything look much better than it is and nobody realizes if there is a defect here or there. My favorite place is Opium Barcelona, the flagship." Moha recognizes that because of his work he has missed important moments in the life of his family and again laughing he says that Ramón's wife often says that he spends more time with her husband than Ramón does with her. Despite this he feels happy to be where he is: "I feel one of them," he claims with satisfaction.
