Esta prestigiosa competición, de larga trayectoria, cuenta en 2019 con participantes internacionales de primer nivel y campeones españoles como Sergio García o Jon Rahm.

Como presidente de Mutuactivos me gustaría daros la bienvenida al Open de España de Golf, que por primera vez patrocina Mutuactivos. La edición de este año es muy especial por varios motivos.

En primer lugar, porque, tras muchos años ausente, el Open vuelve a celebrarse en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, sociedad con una historia estrechamente ligada a la ciudad de Madrid y al deporte del golf. Un campo en el que se ha trabajado mucho para esta importante cita y que sin duda sorprenderá a todos los que lo visiten por primera vez. Quiero manifestar nuestro agradecimiento al Ayuntamiento de Madrid, que desde el principio apoyó que el Mutuactivos Open de España de Golf volviera a este campo mítico.

Pero también será un año importante porque Madrid Trophy Promotion asume las riendas del torneo con el objetivo de convertirlo en uno de los eventos deportivos más importantes que se celebran en nuestro país, tal y como ya hicieron con el Mutua Madrid Open de Tenis. Para nosotros, que llevamos años trabajando con ellos, es un placer hacerlo de nuevo y verles poner en marcha, junto a la Federación Española de Golf, este nuevo proyecto.

As president of Mutuactivos, I would like to welcome you to the Open de España golf tournament, which Mutuactivos is sponsoring for the first time. This year’s event is very special for several reasons.

Firstly, because, after many years away, the Open de España is once again being held at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, a club whose history has close ties with the city of Madrid and the sport of golf. A lot of work has gone into the course for this important event and first-time visitors are in for a treat. I would like to thank the Madrid City Council, who have supported the Mutuactivos Open de España’s return to this classic course from the start.

But it will also be a very important year because Madrid Trophy Promotion has taken the reins of the tournament in order to make it one of the biggest sporting occasions in our country, just as they have done with the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament. For us, having worked with them for years, it is a pleasure to do so again and to see them launch this new project, hand in hand with the Federación Española de Golf.

Por nuestra parte, desde la gestora de fondos de inversión y de pensiones que presido, es un honor vincularnos al Open de España de Golf, el primero de los grandes eventos a los que a partir de ahora apoyaremos. For our part, from the mutual and pension fund management entity that I preside, it is an honour to be linked to golf’s Open de España, the first of the large events that we will now be supporting.

Having started our journey as Mutua Madrileña’s financial equity manager of over 30 years ago, Mutuactivos is today the first independent management company in Spain. The Mutuactivos Open de España is a reflection of the success we have enjoyed with the passing of the years and of our desire to continue growing in the future.

As the president of Mutuactivos, but also as a fan of golf, I would like to finish by thanking the international stars who are teeing it up at our tournament this year, the Spanish ones in particular.

a celebración del Mutuactivos Open de España es siempre un motivo de alegría que nos permite ver en directo el mejor golf y disfrutar de nuestros grandes campeones españoles.

El año 2018 vivimos un Open de España muy especial, porque se jugó en el Centro Nacional y tuvo el desenlace soñado por todos gracias al triunfo de nuestro querido Jon Rahm después de una lucha fratricida con Nacho Elvira. Dos jugadores que pasaron por la Escuela Nacional de Golf Blume y que ahora triunfan en el mundo.

En el año 2019 el Open de España vuelve al Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, lo que nos llena de satisfacción porque es un magnífico campo y porque las nueve ediciones anteriores celebradas en el mismo nos traen muchísimos y emotivos recuerdos. Fueron vencedores, entre otros, jugadores tan carismáticos como Colin Montgomerie (1994), nuestro gran Severiano Ballesteros (1995) y Padraig Harrington (1996).

Todo ello va a ser posible gracias fundamentalmente al European Tour, a Madrid Trophy Promotion y a la Real Federación Española de Golf, que juntos organizaremos durante, al menos 5 años, el Mutuactivos Open de España.

he Mutuactivos Open de España is always good reason for celebration as it allows us to watch the best golf in the world in person and to marvel at our great Spanish champions.

In 2018 we witnessed a very special Open de España, because it was played at the Centro Nacional and it produced a dream result for all involved thanks to the triumph of our beloved Jon Rahm after a battle with fellow Spaniard Nacho Elvira.

Both of these players came through the Blume National School of Golf and are now winning around the world.

In 2019, the Open de España is back at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, which we are delighted about because it is a wonderful course and because the nine previous years that it was held here hold many emotional memories for us. Winners here include charismatic players such as Colin Montgomerie (1994), our great Severiano Ballesteros (1995) and Padraig Harrington (1996).

Como bien sabes, desde Madrid Trophy Promotion iniciamos una ambiciosa etapa como promotores de uno de los torneos de golf más prestigiosos del mundo, el tercer open más antiguo del viejo continente tras el British Open y el Open de Francia, con mucha ilusión y ganas.

Como ya hicimos con el tenis cuando pusimos en marcha el Mutua Madrid Open hace 18 años, nuestra intención principal es organizar un evento de primer nivel que tenga repercusión internacional, combinando la parte deportiva con la social. Empezamos este proyecto con muchas ganas y con la intención de implantar nuestro sello en el mundo del golf, y para ello hemos trabajado con fuerza durante el último año.

As you well know, at Madrid Trophy Promotion we are embarking on an ambitious project as the promoters of one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world, the third oldest open on the old continent, behind The Open Championship and the Open de France, and we do so with great excitement.

As with the tennis when we started the Mutua Madrid Open 18 years ago, our main goal is to organise a first-class event of international stature by combining the sporting and social aspects of the tournament. We are hugely excited about this project and we intend to make our mark on the world of golf, something we have been working hard on over the last year.

The Mutuactivos Open de España boasts an impressive list of past champions that includes the likes of Arnold Palmer, Severiano Ballesteros, Bernard Langer, Nick Faldo, Sergio García and Jon Rahm. There is no doubt that this will be a very special year. It is our baptism as organisers of the tournament and we have the usual butterflies that come with preparing an event like this for the first time, however, we are sure that we will meet all of the objectives we have set ourselves.

We have the experience of the Mutua Madrid Open, we have the best players and we have one of the best golf courses in Spain, in terms of both its design and its location in the capital.

n nombre del European Tour, es un placer darte la bienvenida al Mutuactivos Open de España 2019 que se celebrará en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Este es uno de los torneos más antiguos de Europa continental, ya que se jugó por primera vez en 1912, y el comienzo de tres prestigiosos eventos nacionales que coinciden con el clímax de la Race to Dubai de 2019.

A principios de este año, anunciamos una asociación con Madrid Trophy Promotion para ayudar a desarrollar este torneo en los próximos cinco años, y debemos agradecer a su CEO Gerard Tsobanian, y a su equipo, por su compromiso para hacer crecer el torneo.

This is one of Continental Europe’s oldest tournaments, having first been played in 1912, and starts a run of three prestigious National Opens as the 2019 Race to Dubai nears its climax.

Earlier this year, we announced a partnership with Madrid Trophy Promotion to help develop this tournament over the next five years, and we must thank their CEO Gerard Tsobanian and his team for their vision and commitment to growing the Open de España.

Indeed, it is through the Madrid Trophy Promotion’s hard work that we are delighted to welcome Mutuactivos as this year’s title sponsor.

This wonderful country has played an important part in the history of the European Tour, f rom hosting our very first tournament in Girona in 1972 to giving us some of the greatest golfers in history.

Without question the greatest of them all was Seve Ballesteros and it is highly appropriate that this new chapter in the tournament is staged at the venue where the great man won the last of his European Tour titles back in 1995.

Talking of the venue, I want to pay tribute to Mayor of Madrid and Club de Campo President José Luis Martínez Almeida and all the staff and volunteers here for their efforts in staging the 92nd edition of this prestigious event.

ay muy pocos lugares en España donde se respire más golf que en Club de Campo Villa de Madrid y la mayoría de ellos llevan la firma de Javier Arana. Nacido en Getxo en 1905, probablemente, el vasco es el diseñador de campos más conocido de España. El Saler, Golf El Prat o Guadalmina tienen su rúbrica y permiten apreciar aquel mantra que tanto aplicaría a lo largo de su carrera: “Lo fundamental de un hoyo es que debe ser más difícil de lo que parece o parecer más difícil de lo que en realidad es”.

Hijo de Luis de Olibarri, la Federación Española de Golf se fundó en el salón de su casa en 1932 y su propio padre, también fundador de Neguri, fue presidente de la RFEG desde 1934. Licenciado en Derecho y Filosofía por la Universidad de Deusto, el giro inesperado a su pasión por el golf llegaría en realidad con el estallido de la Guerra Civil. Y también con su final.

Mientras su casa familiar, en la llamada 'zona internacional', fue utilizada en los inicios de contienda para acoger a los aviadores llegados desde la Unión Soviética, él se alistó en la V Brigada de Navarra. Su mando era el Teniente Coronel González de Mendoza, un madrileño nacido con el siglo XX que llegó a presidir la Real Sociedad Geográfica e incluso formó parte de National Geographical Society de Washington. De él aprendió las primeras nociones de ingeniería y cartografía que años después le convertirían en el mito que hoy es.

JAVIER ARANA AND THE CLUB DE CAMPO The Federación Española de Golf was founded in the living room of his house in 1932 and his father, Luis de Olibarri, also a founder of Neguri, was president of the RFEG from 1934.

With a degree in Law and Philosophy from the University of Duesto, his unexpected passion for golf was tied to the outbreak of the Civil War, and also to its end.

T

here are few spaces in Spain that live and breathe golf more than at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, and most that do bear the signature of Javier Arana. Born in Getxo in 1905, the Basque is probably the best-known course designer in Spain. El Saler, Golf El Prat and Guadalmina are all his handiwork and they all provide examples of the mantra he would apply throughout his career: “The essential thing for a hole is that it must be more difficult than it looks or look more difficult than it really is”.

The

Early in the conflict, while his family home, in the so-called ‘international zone’, was being used to house aviators arriving f rom the Soviet Union, he signed up to the V Brigade in Navarra. His superior there was Lieutenant Colonel González de Mendoza, a Madrid native born at the turn of the twentieth century who would later preside over the Real Sociedad Geográfica and was even part of the National Geographic Society of Washington. It is f rom him that Arana learned the first notions of engineering and cartography that, years later, would help him become the legend he is today.

Aquellas mismas lecciones y su aprendizaje como jugador profesional le valieron tras 1939 para que la Federación le convirtiera en el principal responsable de la recuperación de aquellos recorridos que los combates habían reducido a cenizas. El primero de ellos, el Club de Campo, un recorrido originalmente diseñado por el mítico Tom Simpson y que la batalla de Ciudad Universitaria había dejado completamente inservible.

Simpson siempre fue considerado un genio y un excéntrico a partes iguales. Tal y como narra Alfonso Erhardt Ybarra en su libro 'Los campos de golf de Javier Arana', Simpson era coleccionista de bastones para caminar y de alfombras persas, aunque también vivía obsesionado por anotar en una agenda cada uno de los vinos que cataba. Peculiaridades que no le impidieron convertirse en uno de los grandes arquitectos de golf de la primera mitad de siglo, especialmente porque sabía con quien asociarse.

Tom Simpson se asoció durante los felices años 20 con Philip MacKenzie Ross -suyo es el rediseño del Ailsa Course de Turnberry-, quien de algún modo influyó en el diseño original del Club de Campo de la misma manera que el propio Simpson influyó en la remodelación del recorrido cuando se asoció con Javier Arana entre 1945 y 1948. Ambos, Simpson y Arana, estuvieron cerca de retocar el diseño original de Herbert Fowler en Lasarte e incluso llegaron a realizar un estudio sobre el diseño de Harry Colt en Pedreña. Trabajo que sirvió para pulir aún más el talento natural del español, quien a partir de 1950 comenzaría su etapa dorada.

En 1952, el Club de Campo abrió un recorrido de nueve hoyos, siete de ellos diseñados por Arana. Cuatro años después llegarían los 18 hoyos completos, cuando Arana logró desarrollar nueve hoyos más y remodeló los 9 existentes. Ya en los años 60, Arana construyó otros nueve hoyos y el recorrido cambió levemente, al convertir los hoyos 15 y 18 en los actuales 7 y 9.

Ya en 1993, Seve Ballesteros completaría el Villa de Madrid con otros nueve hoyos que definirían los actuales recorridos Negro y Amarillo.

El Club de Campo define a la perfección el mito de Javier Arana que, si bien quedó magistralmente retratado en el libro de Erhardt Ybarra, aún no sido puesto en valor ni en el lugar que le corresponde. Al menos el Recorrido Negro es la muestra perfecta de su trabajo y de sus influencias, desde aquel teniente coronel al mando de una tropa de requetés hasta el peso en sus diseños de las lecciones de Simpson y MacKenzie Ross. Y si tienen alguna duda, ahí está el par tres del hoyo 17 para demostrarlo.

These lessons and his experience as a professional player that convinced the Golf Federation to give him the responsibility of restoring the courses that had been reduced to ashes by the f ighting.

The f irst of them was Club de Campo, a course originally designed by the legendary Tom Simpson and later rendered useless by the Battle of Ciudad Universitaria.

Simpson was always considered a genius and an eccentric in equal parts. As Alfonso Erhardt Ybarra explains in his book ‘The Golf Courses of Javier Arana’, Simpson was a collector of walking sticks and Persian rugs and he was obsessed with keeping notes on every single wine he tasted.

However, these peculiarities did not stop him f rom becoming one of the great golf architects of the f irst half of the century, especially because he knew exactly whom to associate himself with.

In the roaring 20s, Tom Simpson teamed up with Philip Mackenzie Ross – the redesign of the Ailsa Course at Turnberry is his-, who in some way had an influence on the original Club de Campo design, just as Simpson influenced the remodelling of the course when he joined forces with Javier Arana between 1945 and 1948.

Both Simpson and Arana came close to revamping Herbert Fowler’s original design at Lasarte and they even made a study of Harry Colt’s Pedreña. This worked served to further polish the Spaniard’s natural talent, and 1950 would mark the start of his golden era.

In 1952, the Club de Campo opened a new nine-hole course, seven of them designed by Arana. The full 18-holes would be open four years later, when Arana managed to develop nine new holes and remodel the existing 9. In the 60s, Arana built a further nine holes and the layout changed slightly, with the 15th and 18th becoming the current 7th and 9th. In 1993 Seve Ballesteros would complete the Villa de Madrid with nine new holes that would complete the current Black and Yellow Courses.

The Club de Campo perfectly defines the legend of Javier Arana, whom, although wonderfully portrayed in Erhardt Ybarra’s book, has never quite been granted the credit and place in history he deserves.

However, the Black Course is the perfect example of his work and his inspiration, f rom that Lieutenant Colonel leading a troop of volunteers to the hints in his designs at lessons f rom Simpson and Mackenzie Ross. In case you are still in any doubt, here is the par-three 17th in all its beauty.

La Armada Española, más invencible que nunca E ste Mutuactivos Open de España 2019 no puede llegar en mejor momento para el golf español, o al menos así ayudan a pensar los datos de los jugadores nacionales a estas alturas de año. Tres españoles en el top-50 mundial y cinco en el top 100, aparte de los ocho que ahora mismo se encuentran entre los 60 mejores de la Race to Dubai, que son los que jugarían la gran final del European Tour.

Pero, lo mejor de todo esto para el público español es que esta semana en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid va a poder disfrutar del mejor plantel de jugadores patrios que jamás haya visto un torneo profesional, pues entre la treintena de nacionales estarán todos los grandes espadas, ya que ninguno ha querido perderse este estreno de un renovado Mutuactivos Open de España.

El otro integrante del ‘big three’ es Rafa Cabrera-Bello, que también vuelve a Madrid en pleno estado de forma, pues el sexto puesto que ha logrado recientemente en el torneo estrella del European Tour le ha vuelto a cargar las pilas, como ocurrió durante el mes de julio, cuando logró tres top-10 consecutivos. Pese a no haber logrado ninguna victoria este año, el canario llega al Mutuactivos Open de España 2019 con la firme intención de olvidar el corte fallado en la pasada edición.

The Spanish Navy, more invincible than ever T he 2019 Mutuactivos Open de España could not have come at a better time for Spanish golf, or at least that is what our national players’ stats so far this year would suggest.

There are three Spaniards in the world’s top 50, five in the top 100 and eight among the top 60 in the Race to Dubai; the players that will be teeing it up in the European Tour’s grand finale.

But the best thing about all of this for the Spanish fans is that this week at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid they will be able to enjoy the best field of home players they have ever seen at a professional tournament, as the more than thirty national players includes the biggest stars, all of whom were quick to add their names to the first edition of the revamped Mutuactivos Open de España.

Jon Rahm is firing on all cylinders as he prepares to defend his 2108 title after a series of stellar performances; the Basque player has been inside the top 15 in every single one of his last nine appearances on the European and

PGA Tours, including a spectacular victory at the Irish Open and two second places, one at Valderrama and recently at Wentworth.

For his part, Sergio García seems to have found the spark he had been lacking in recent months, as evidenced by his stunning victory at the KLM Open a couple of weeks ago. Although it may seem to have been a sub-par season for the player f rom Castellon, he has posted eight top 10s in 2019.

The final member of the big three is Rafa Cabrera-Bello, who is also bringing his A-game back to Madrid, as his recent sixth-place finish at the European Tour’s flagship event seems to have given him a new lease of life, just like in July, when he strung together three top-10 finishes.

Despite not having produced any victories this year, the Canary Islander comes to the 2019 Mutuactivos Open de España determined to forget the cut he missed last time around.

Los otros dos españoles que están en el top-100 son Jorge Campillo y Adriá Arnaus, ambos logrando sus mejores temporadas como profesionales. Campillo ha conseguido, por fin, en este 2019 su primera victoria en el European Tour, lo hizo en el Trophee Hassan II de Marruecos. Seis son los top-10 que ha cosechado en 2019, los mismos que en toda la temporada anterior, algo que ha permitido al extremeño asentarse entre los mejores de Europa.

En el caso de Adriá Arnaus, su primera temporada en la élite del golf europeo está dejando asombrados a propios y a extraños. Aunque siendo ambiciosos como él, se puede decir que falta el broche de la victoria, el catalán ha logrado tres segundos puestos y dos participaciones en ‘majors’, el US Open y el Open Championship.

cuatro años de ausencia, y eso que su última actuación fue un gran segundo puesto en el Real Club de Golf de El Prat. En el caso de Jose María Olazábal son cinco los años de ausencia, desde 2014, por lo que son muchas las ganas de volver a ver al vasco en un Open nacional, torneo que no ha ganado nunca pero en el que ha tenido muchas grandes actuaciones. Sus dolencias físicas, esas que lleva arrastrando ya muchos años, le van a permitir volver a jugar el torneo en el que debutó como profesional en 1985.

En cuanto al resto de la Armada Española, hay que estar atentos a otros grandes jugadores que siempre rinden bien en suelo español como pueden ser Pablo Larrazábal, Nacho Elvira, Álvaro Quirós o Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, este último con la peculiaridad de ser el único jugador del torneo que es socio del Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, aunque reconoce que hace tiempo que no va y no conoce los últimos cambios que ha suf rido el campo.

En definitiva, estamos ante el Mutuactivos Open de España más importante para el golf español, no sólo por la nueva apuesta en su organización, sino por el nivel de los jugadores que apoyan este apasionante proyecto.

The other two Spaniards in the top 100 are Jorge Campillo and Adriá Arnaus, both of whom are enjoying their best seasons as professionals. 2019 saw Campillo finally pick up his first European Tour victory at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco. He boasts six top-ten finishes in 2019, just as he did last season, earning the player from Extremadura a place among Europe’s best.

In Adriá Arnaus’ case, his first season among Europe’s elite is certainly turning heads. Although, if we allow ourselves to be as ambitious as he, we could say he is lacking one thing; victory.

But the Catalonian player has racked up three second places and two participations in majors (US Open and The Open Championship).

Two of the biggest names in the history of our country’s sport, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Jose María Olazábal did not hesitate to add their names to the field for this great event. Although they now mostly ply their trade on the Senior Tour rather than the European Tour, they will be leading the Armada just as they have for decades. ‘El Pisha’, who is still producing solid performances at first-class events, is back at the Mutuactivos Open de España after a four-year absence, and he actually finished second at the

Real Club de Golf de El Prat last time he played in the event. In the case of Jose María Olazábal, it has been five years since his last appearance in 2014, so plenty of fans will be keen to get a glimpse of the Basque player at his national open, a tournament that he has never won but has often performed well at. The physical ailments that have hampered him for many years are currently not bothering him enough to prevent him f rom returning to the tournament where he made his professional debut in 1985.

As for the rest of the Spanish Armada, there are plenty of players who always do well on Spanish soil to keep an eye out for, such as Pablo Larrazábal, Nacho Elvira, Álvaro Quirós and Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, who will be the only player at the tournament this year who is a member of the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, although he admits that it has been a while since he has been there and he is not familiar with the latest changes made to the course.

he 2019 Mutuactivos Open de España will be the stage of a historic event for Spanish golf; it will be the f irst time this tournament has been able to boast the presence of three Spanish players in the world’s top 50, a position currently enjoyed by Jon Rahm, Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Sergio Garcia.

In fact, it will be the f irst time that Spain’s current leading three golfers have come together to play a tournament on Spanish soil, as no more than two of them have never previously done so, be it at the Open de España or in any other event in our country, such as the Valderrama Masters in recent years.

It is a fact that Spanish golf is currently in wonderful health, as demonstrated by Sergio Garcia’s Masters victory two years ago, the meteoric rise of Jon Rahm since he turned professional in 2017 and the nine victories by Spanish golfers on the two main tours in the last two seasons.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 1

Alfonso Piñero, asesor del equipo de mantenimiento y dirección del Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, nos hace una guía exhaustiva de los 18 hoyos del diseño de Javier Arana. ¿Cómo ha de jugarse este campo? ¿Qué trucos tiene? Hoyo a hoyo vamos a conocer sus trucos: Hoyo 1 (par 4): Tee 20 metros más atrasado que dificulta la caída del drive, ahora la referencia pasa a ser el búnker de la izquierda. Debe jugarse al ‘fade’ con driver o madera 3, dejando un segundo golpe que va del hierro 6 al wedge. Green estrecho y pequeño cuya bandera más complicada será arriba a la derecha.

Hole 1 (par 4): The tee has been moved back 18 yards, making the landing area more difficult for the drive, bringing the left-hand bunker into play.

The shot requires a fade with a driver or a 3-wood, leaving a second with anything from a 6-iron to a wedge. A narrow and small green where the most difficult pin position will be the back-right.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 2 Hoyo 2 (par 4): El tee también se ha retrasado 23 metros, así que entran en juego los búnkers de la izquierda (270 metros). Segundo golpe similar al hoyo 1, entre hierro 7 y wedge, a un green más franco, cuya posición de bandera fácil es corta y la complicada es medio-derecha.

Hole 2 (par 4): This tee has also been moved back, 21 yards in this case, now the left-hand bunkers (300 yards) are a factor. The second shot is similar to the one on the first, between a 7-iron and a wedge, to a more level green, with an easy pin position at the front and the most difficult in the middle on the right.

Hole 3 (par 3): The front flag is the most difficult because of how narrow it is, and if you miss on either side there is a good chance of a bogey or double. The long pin is more accessible because if you miss there is more room for recovery.

Alfonso Piñero, the maintenance and management team advisor at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, gives us an exhaustive guide to Javier Arana’s 18-hole layout. How should you play the course? What are its secrets? We take a hole-by-hole look at it: Hoyo 4 (par 5): Se han ganado 10 metros en el tee que permiten tener la caída de la calle a 260 metros. Con viento en contra se complica mucho, pero de lo contrario será un hoyo claro de birdie. El rough de la parte derecha va a ser muy complicado para el Open, pero si evitan esa zona no tendrán problemas. Con la bandera larga y a la izquierda hay que tener cuidado, porque veremos varios tripateos.

Hole 4 (par 5): 10 yards have been added to the tee, allowing the use of a landing zone at 285 yards. It becomes much more difficult into the wind, but otherwise this is a clear birdie chance. The rough on the right will be very tough during the Open de España, but if they avoid that area they won’t have any problems. The back-left pin is one to be wary of, we will see several three-putts there.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 5 Hoyo 5 (par 4): Hoyo estratégico, pues los jugadores pueden optar por salir con hierro o con driver, dependiendo de lo complicado que esté el rough de la izquierda. Tendrán un segundo tiro de hierro 7 hasta uno de los wedges, depende de la estrategia. Un green no muy complicado, pero mucha atención a la bandera larga-derecha.

Hole 5 (par 4): A strategic hole because players can opt for an iron or the driver off the tee, depending on how tricky the rough on the left is. They will have a 7-iron to one of their wedges to the dance floor, depending on their strategy. A very tricky green, watch out for the back-right flag.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 6

Hoyo 6 (par 4): Lo normal es jugar hierro 2 o híbrido de salida para quedarse corto del arroyo, aunque alguno optará por jugar driver a pasarlo, pero no compensa mucho. Como en la mayoría de greenes, la bandera corta del piano es la más sencilla, pero la del fondo es muy complicada.

Hole 6 (par 4): Normally a 2-iron or hybrid from the tee to stay short of the stream, although some will opt for the driver to carry it, but this doesn’t reap much reward. As with most greens, the pin short of the tier is the simplest, but the back is very tricky.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 7 Hoyo 7 (par 5): Es un hoyo de recuperación cuyo tee “nuevo” de hace tres años deja el búnker a 270 metros, pero que los pegadores podrán volar sin problemas. Habrá que tener cuidado con el rough espeso que hemos dejado en la parte izquierda, pues si la bola bota en cuesta abajo pueden tener problemas. Las banderas del fondo de green son las complicadas por todas sus caídas, de hecho es la gran defensa de este hoyo. Pero seguro que se ven muchos birdies y algún eagle porque podrán tirar a green con hierro.

Hole 7 (par 5): A recovery hole whose “new” tee from three years back leaves a bunker at 300 yards, but the big hitters will carry it without difficulty. They will have to be careful of the thick rough we have left on the left-hand side, as if the ball bounces on the downslope they could run into trouble. The pin positions at the back of the green are difficult because of all the undulations, which is in fact this hole’s biggest defence. There will certainly be a lot of birdies and the odd eagle here because they can hit the green with an iron.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 8 Hoyo 8 (par 4): El hoyo más sencillo del campo, aunque los problemas están si se falla el drive por la derecha, ya que hemos dejado el rough muy agresivo. La bandera larga-centro es la más compleja, aunque no deberían sufrir mucho.

Hole 8 (par 4): The simplest hole on the course, although there is trouble if the drive leaks right, as we have let the rough grow very long there. The middle-back pin is the most complex, although it should not present too much difficulty.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 9 Hoyo 9 (par 3): No deberían pegar más de un hierro 7-8. El piano lateral que divide el hoyo hace que la bandera difícil sea corta-derecha, pero si ponen la bandera fácil (parte izquierda), el jugador que se quede en el piano de arriba tendrá muy presentes los tres putts.

Hole 9 (par 3): They shouldn’t be hitting more than a 7 or 8-iron here. The lateral tier that splits the green makes the short-right pin position the difficult one, but if they are playing to the easy pin (left-hand side) and finish on the top tier, they will have to be very careful not to three-putt.

avid Gómez es conocido por muchos en el mundo del golf como ‘el hombre milagro’, pues consigue hacer maravillas con los campos en los que se disputa cada año el Open de España. Es el responsable de la ‘Green Section’, comité de la Real Federación Española de Golf que se encarga del mantenimiento y asesoramiento de campos de golf en España. avid Gómez is known by many in the world of golf as ‘the miracle man’ because every year he works wonders with the course the Open de España is being played on. He is the head of the ‘Green Section’, the Real Federación Española de Golf’s committee responsible for course maintenance and consultation at golf clubs in Spain.

Having been one of the heroes, together with his amazing team, at the 2018 edition at the Centro Nacional, much is expected of him in 2019, but now he has a couple of aces up his sleeve; more time to prepare and Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, a gem of a course to work with.

P- ¿Cómo está el campo en estos días previos al Mutuactivos Open de España?

P- How is the course looking in the days leading up to the Mutuactivos Open de España?

R- Lo mejor que se puede decir del campo ahora es que tiene hierba, y es que cuando vinimos hace un año por primera vez, sabíamos que había que acometer una serie de cambios importantes y así llegar al torneo con hierba suficiente en el campo. Históricamente, la climatología de estos meses es la peor para Madrid, porque nuestra hierba es idónea para el invierno, pero en los meses posteriores al verano suf re, aunque tras los cambios que hicimos estoy tranquilo porque los greenes están muy sanos, hay hierba suficiente y sólo nos queda definir y cortar para tenerlo listo.

R- The best thing you can say about the course right now is that it has grass, because the fact is that when we came here a year ago for the first time, we knew that we’d have to make a series of significant changes in order to have enough grass on the course when the tournament came round. Historically, the climate in these months is the worst in Madrid, because our grass is ideal for the winter, but in the post-summer months it suffers, although after the changes we made, I’m happy because the greens are very healthy, there is enough grass and all that we have left is definition and cutting to get it ready.

P- Un año preparando el torneo, ¿esa es la principal diferencia respecto al del año pasado que se tuvo que preparar a la carrera?

P- One year preparing for the tournament, is that the main difference compared to last year, when it had to be prepared quickly?

R- Exacto, en 2018 apenas tuvimos siete semanas para preparar el Centro Nacional, y en esta edición contamos con un año entero. Desde el día que vinimos el octubre pasado, nos marcamos un plan de cinco puntos que eran vitales para tener una preparación óptima del campo:

R- Exactly, in 2018 we only had seven weeks to get the Centro Nacional ready, and this time we had a whole year. From the moment that we came here last October, we set out a plan of five vital points in order to prepare the course optimally:

1. Aumentar la calidad del agua de riego, algo que ha hecho el CCVM desde un absoluto compromiso con la sostenibilidad.

1. Increase the quality of the water for watering, something that the CCVM has done with complete commitment to sustainability.

2. Cambio de maquinaria, pues hemos traído máquinas específicas para este tipo de preparación, más manuales, que nos permiten dejar el campo más bonito.

2. Machinery change; we have brought in specific machines for this type of preparation, they are more manual and allow us to make the course more beautiful.

3. Un programa de pinchado y recebo del campo muy agresivo y así cambiar el perfil del suelo para que esté más firme y mejor.

3. An aggressive hollow-tining and sanding programme for the course in order to change the soil profile so that it is better and firmer.

4. Apoyo del personal, pues nos hemos complementado con los trabajadores del campo para suplir vacaciones, bajas y demás… Y así tener siempre gente trabajando para el objetivo del Open.

4. Support from the personnel; we have used the services of the course employees to fill in for holidays, sickness, etc. That way we always have people working on the Open.

5. La parte agronómica también se ha trabajado entre CCVM y nuestra ‘Green Section’, con gente nuestra metida en el día a día del campo y así poder sacarlo adelante entre todos.

P- ¿Cuánta gente está trabajando en preparar el campo lo mejor posible para el Mutuactivos Open 2019?

P- How many people are working to prepare the course as well as possible for the 2019 Mutuactivos Open?

R- El Club de Campo, ahora mismo, tiene su plantilla para los dos campos y el Pitch&Putt, y nosotros les hemos unido a parte de nuestro equipo. En total, hablamos de unas 30 personas, aunque obviamente el personal del CCVM no está en exclusiva para el recorrido del Open, pues hay otros dos campos que atender.

R- Club de Campo, right now, has its staff for the two courses and the pitch and putt, and we have added them to part of our team. In total, we’re talking about roughly 30 people, although obviously the CCVM personnel are not working exclusively on the course for the Open, as there are other courses that need looking after.

P- ¿Cuáles son las mayores dificultades que te has encontrado para la preparación de este torneo?

P- What are the biggest difficulties you have found in the preparation for this tournament?

R- Sin duda, la climatología. Ha sido un año muy seco, y eso ha sido un lastre, pero debo decir que lo hemos suplido con creces gracias a la actitud de todo el equipo de trabajadores, porque están siempre abiertos y dispuestos a que les ayudemos.

R- The weather, without a doubt. It has been a very dry year, and that has been a problem, but I have to say that we have passed the test with flying colours thanks to the attitude of the whole team of workers, because they are always open and happy for us to help.

P- ¿Qué beneficios tiene que sea una sede fija para cinco años?

P- What are the benefits of having a fixed venue for five years?

R- Para mí, es un beneficio total, porque podemos planificar todo con una idea de futuro. De hecho, ya estamos pensando en qué cosas vamos a hacer para el año que viene, como por ejemplo un plan de mejora en la construcción de los búnkers, seguir siendo agresivos con el pinchado y recebo… En definitiva, este año no va a estar perfecto, pero sí que cada año nos vamos a ir acercando más a esa perfección, a unos estándares de calidad altísimos.

R- For me, it’s a huge benefit because we can plan everything looking to the future. In fact, we’re already thinking of what we are going to do for next year, such as, for example, an improvement plan for the construction of bunkers, continuing to be aggressive with the tining and sanding… Ultimately, this year is not going to be perfect, but we will be getting closer to that perfection and to some extremely high quality standards every year.

P- Si tuvieras que pedir unas condiciones climatológicas para estos últimos días previos al torneo, ¿cuáles serían?

P- If you could ask for better weather conditions for these final days in the run up to the tournament, what would they be?

R- Pues cuando mejor y más sanas crecen la poa y la festuca es con una media de 22-23 grados durante el día y 14 por la noche. Y si no es mucho pedir, algo de lluvia, pero no mucha, que sino me destroza los búnkers.

R- Poa and fescue grow at their best and healthiest with an average of 22-23 degrees during the day and 14 at night. And if it’s not too much to ask, a little rain, but not too much, otherwise it’ll destroy my bunkers.

P- Cuando llegan este tipo de eventos en los que el campo está bajo mil miradas y se habla mucho de ti, ¿tienes más miedo a la crítica general o a la tuya propia?

P- When these types of events come around, and there are thousands of pairs of eyes on the course and people talk a lot about you, are you more worried about the general criticism or your own?

R- Sin duda, a la mía y la de mi equipo, que somos demasiado autoexigentes. Personalmente, yo me exijo mucho, porque el departamento está muy comprometido con llevar el Open de España a lo más alto, y no se puede fallar. Además, ya no es únicamente la Federación Española, hay otros agentes involucrados como el Club de Campo oMadrid Trophy Promotion, que han confiado totalmente en nosotros, y si les fallamos la hemos fastidiado. Lo único que espero es que tengan la paciencia de saber que este campo va a ir creciendo con el tiempo y con las inversiones que se hagan. La crítica nos la hacemos nosotros, como por ejemplo el año pasado, que aunque se hablaba de que el rough no era del nivel del European Tour, se buscaba que fuera ‘El Open de todos y para todos’, y eso creo que lo conseguimos.

R- Mine, without a doubt, and that of my team, because we are highly self-demanding. Personally, I am very demanding on myself, because the department is very committed to taking the Open de España to the top, and failure is not acceptable. In addition, it’s not just the Federación Española now, there are other parties involved such as the Club de Campo and Madrid Trophy Promotion, who have put all of their trust in us, and if we fail them we have let them down. The only thing I hope for is that they are patient and realise that this course is going to grow with time and with the investments that are being made. We are our own critics, such as, for example, last year, when although there was talk of the rough not being up to the standards of the European Tour, the goal was for it to be ‘everyone’s Open, for everyone’, and I believe we achieved that.

P- Si hablaras con los jugadores, ¿para qué les dirías que vengan preparados? ¿Qué se van a encontrar?

P- If you were to speak to the players, what would you tell them to prepare for? What can they expect to find?

R- En este torneo creo que la clave va a estar en los tiros a green, porque estos greenes no son muy grandes, y los vamos a poder tener muy firmes y bastante rápidos. Hay posiciones de bandera muy complicadas y la gran defensa de este campo son las escapatorias alrededor de green, que las estamos preparando a conciencia. Así que, si no picas bien la bola en green con los segundos tiros, va a ser complicado hacer pares.

R- In this tournament, I think shots into the greens will be key, because these greens are very big, and we’re going to be able to get them very firm and pretty quick. There are very difficult pin positions and this course’s greatest defence are the drop-offs around the greens, which we’re preparing with great care. So, if you don’t find the green with your second shot it’ll be difficult to make par.

P- El diseño de Arana está muy pensado bajo el lema de ‘riesgo-recompensa’, ¿cómo se gestiona eso en la preparación del campo?

R- Efectivamente, los diseños de Javier Arana, influidos también por Colt y Simpson, tienen esas situaciones de ‘riesgo-recompensa’ en todos los hoyos.

Hay hoyos que dejan muy clara esa estrategia como son el 1, el 5 o el 13, donde si te la juegas y sale bien, sacas mucha renta. Nosotros hemos cuidado eso al máximo y por eso creo que los jugadores deben venir muy finos en los segundos golpes si quieren ganar. Y el rough va a estar bastante puñetero, pero estos chicos son muy buenos… Aunque si no van a calle, ya digo que el tiro a green se complica.

The

P- Arana’s design was very much conceived with ‘risk-reward’ in mind, how do you manage that in the preparation of the course?

R- Exactly, Javier Arana’s designs, also influenced by Colt and Simpson, have ‘risk-reward’ situations on every hole. There are holes where the strategy is very clear, such as 1, 5 and 13, where if you take the risk and it comes off, you will profit greatly from it. We’ve taken great care to maintain that and that’s why I believe that the players will need to have their irons dialled in if they want to win. And the rough is going to be pretty tough, but these guys are very good... Although, if they don’t hit the fairway, I can assure you the shot to the green will get tricky.

E

l Mutuactivos Open de España 2019 será testigo de un regreso muy importante para el golf español como es el de Sergio García a Madrid tras nueve años de ausencia, pues su última participación en un torneo profesional en la capital fue en 2010, cuando el de Castellón jugó el Madrid Masters en el campo de la Real Sociedad Hípica.

En aquella ocasión, García no pudo completar las cuatro vueltas al fallar el corte, por lo que esta vez vendrá con muchas ganas de hacer un buen papel ante el público madrileño, ya que nunca ha ganado un evento del European Tour en esta ciudad.

SERGIO GARCÍA, BACK IN MADRID NINE YEARS LATER

T

he 2019 Mutuactivos Open de España will bear witness to a very important return for Spanish golf, with Sergio García making his comeback to Madrid after a nine-year absence. His last participation in a professional tournament in the capital came in 2010, when the Castellon native played in the Madrid Masters at the Real Sociedad Hípica course.

Then, García was unable to complete all four rounds as he fell victim to the cut, this time therefore he will be keen to play well in front of the Madrid fans, as he has never won a European Tour event in this city.

Para este Mutuactivos Open de España 2019, Sergio García cuenta con un aliado, y no es otro que el campo, y es que este maravilloso recorrido del Club de Campo Villa de Madrid es el lugar en el que el jugador de Borriol ha cosechado su mejor resultado como profesional en Madrid, y fue en el año 2003, en un Turespaña Open de Madrid, en el que quedó sexto clasificado con -11. Pese a que tuvo un inicio espectacular con una primera jornada de 64 golpes, que le sirvió para estar a un golpe de su buen amigo Paul Casey, García no pudo luchar por la victoria el último día ya que ni la segunda ni la tercera ronda fueron buenas como para darle esa opción. Finalmente, un gran sprint final de 67 golpes el domingo le aupó hasta la sexta posición, terminando a tres golpes del campeón, Ricardo González.

Su otra buena actuación en suelo madrileño fue hace justo 10 años, en 2009, cuando el Madrid Masters se celebró en el Centro Nacional de Golf y García jugó realmente bien, llegando incluso a ser líder tras las dos primeras jornadas. El fin de semana no se dio todo lo bien que él esperaba y terminó cayendo hasta la 17ª posición con un resultado total de -15.

En cuanto a Opens de España disputados en Madrid, y que hayan contado con la presencia de Sergio García, hay que remontarse hasta el siglo pasado, cuando el ganador del Masters 2017 todavía era jugador amateur. Fueron dos Peugeot Open de España, en 1996 y 1997, y eran de las primeras incursiones que García hacía entre profesionales.

El de 1996 se disputó, precisamente, en el Club de campo Villa de Madrid, y con apenas 16 años logró una gran actuación, pues fue capaz de superar el corte y quedar en el puesto 49, empatado ni más ni menos que con el gran Severiano Ballesteros. De hecho, su gran primera vuelta del jueves, 68 golpes, le sirvió para colocarse en cuarta posición, mostrando a las primeras de cambio sus credenciales de gran jugador. Aunque esa fue su única vuelta bajo par del torneo, le sirvió como carta de presentación ante un elenco de jugadores de primer nivel mundial.

His other solid performance on Madrid soil came exactly 10 years ago, in 2009, when the Madrid Masters was held at the Centro Nacional de Golf and García played spectacularly well, he was even leading after the f irst two rounds. However, the end of the week did not go as he had hoped and he dropped down to 17th position with a total of -15.

As for Spanish Opens played in Madrid, to f ind one that included Sergio García, we have to go back to the last century, when the 2017 Masters champion was still an amateur. He took part in two Peugeot Opens de España in 1996 and 1997, García’s f irst outings among professionals.

In 1996, it was played here at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, and at just 16 years of age, he produced a brilliant performance, making the cut and f inishing 49th, tied with none other than the great Severiano Ballesteros. In fact, his f irst round on Thursday, 68, put him in fourth position, immediately demonstrating his credentials as a great player. Although it turned out to be his only under-par round at the tournament, it served him as an introduction to a number of f irst-class players.

For this year’s Mutuactivos Open de España, Sergio García has an ally in the course, as the wonderful Club de Campo Villa de Madrid track was the stage on which the player from Borriol produced his best professional result in Madrid, at the 2003 Turespaña Open de Madrid, finishing sixth on -11. Despite a stunning start, carding 64 in the first round, putting him one shot behind his good friend Paul Casey, García was not in the battle for the title on the final day because his second and third rounds were not good enough to put him there. In the end, a final sprint of 67 strokes on Sunday catapulted him up the leaderboard into sixth position, three shots behind the champion, Ricardo González.

En esta ocasión, el desarrollo del torneo fue diferente, pues el castellonense sufrió para pasar el corte, pero lo logró justo en el límite con dos primeras rondas de 71 y 73 golpes. Ya en el fin de semana, una de cal y otra de arena, ya que pudo sacar su mejor vuelta el sábado, 70 golpes, pero repitió el resultado de 73 golpes el último día, lo que le dejó en el puesto 47, mejorando en dos posiciones su actuación de 1996. Jugadores como Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman o los españoles Olazábal, Jiménez y Garrido vieron en estos dos torneos que había un joven con mucho desparpajo que les había empezado a poner las cosas difíciles. Y, más de 20 años después, no se han equivocado, pues Sergio García llega un año más al Mutuactivos Open de España como uno de los claros favoritos. ¿Logrará su primer triunfo en la capital? LOS SECRETOS DEL CAMPO. ASÍ SE JUEGA EL CCVM

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 10

Alfonso Piñero, asesor del equipo de mantenimiento y dirección del Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, nos hace una guía exhaustiva de los 18 hoyos del diseño de Javier Arana. ¿Cómo ha de jugarse este campo? ¿Qué trucos tiene? Hoyo a hoyo vamos a conocer sus trucos:

Hoyo 10 (par 4): Un búnker a 270 metros difícil de volar porque el rough va a estar muy complicado, por lo que es muy importante asegurar calle.

Es un green muy movido, cuya bandera difícil es centro-fondo, pegada al búnker. Si no ajustas el palo, ese búnker te complica lo que puede parecer un hoyo sencillo por ser corto.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 11

Hole 10 (par 4): There is a bunker at 300 yards that is difficult to carry because the rough will be very thick, therefore it is important to hit the fairway here. The green is very undulating and the difficult flag is centre-back, tight to the bunker. If you misclub, that bunker will make what seems a simple, short hole more complicated.

Hoyo 11 (par 3): La bandera fácil es abajo corta-izquierda, pero si intentan ajustar demasiado y no coronan en green, el escape que hemos puesto les llevará la bola muy para abajo. Cuidado con la bandera larga y en el centro, sus caídas comprometen incluso los putts muy cortos.

Hole 11 (par 3): The easy pin is front-left, but if they try to get too cute with it and miss the green, the drop-off we have made will take the ball a long way down. Careful with the middle-back flag, its contours will make even the shortest of putts difficult.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 12 Hoyo 12 (par 4): El búnker de calle se vuela sin problemas, pero la encina del centro de calle puede dificultar el segundo tiro. Si fallan por la izquierda, tendrán problemas por otra encina rodeada de rough alto a la caída de drive. El jugador debe pensar mucho desde el tee, porque la estrategia y el acierto son claves, ya que si clavas el drive te queda un tiro muy corto, pero si lo fallas, el par se complica. La bandera complicada es justo en el centro, la que está sobre una pequeña plataforma.

Hole 12 (par 4): The fairway bunker is an easy carry, but the holm oak in the middle of the fairway could hamper the second shot. If they miss left, they will have problems with another holm oak surrounded by high rough in the landing area. Players will have to use their heads on the tee, because strategy and accuracy are key, as if you nail your drive you will be left with a short shot, but if you miss it, it is a difficult par. The trickiest flag is bang in the middle, on top of a small platform.

THE COURSE SECRETS. HOW TO PLAY THE CCVM

Alfonso Piñero, the maintenance and management team advisor at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, gives us an exhaustive guide to Javier Arana’s 18-hole layout. How should you play the course? What are its secrets? We take a hole-by-hole look at it:

Hoyo 13 : Tee nuevo 15 metros más atrás, similar al del 1 que invita a jugar un golpe exigente al ‘fade’. El segundo golpe dependerá de lo seca que esté la calle, pero no será más de un hierro 7 a un green muy movido con la bandera complicada atrás y en el centro. Las caídas deben leerlas muy bien porque muchas no se ven a simple vista.

Hole 13 : New tee, 14 yards back, like the 1st it demands a fade. The approach will depend on how dry the fairway is, but it will be no more than a 7-iron to a very uneven green with difficult pins at the back and in the middle.

This green must be read carefully because it is often hard to see the breaks at a glance.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 14

Hoyo 14 (par 5): Golpe de salida bastante sencillo a una calle ancha, aunque deben ajustar por la parte izquierda, incluso llegando a volar el búnker, ya que si caen en el rough de la derecha será difícil que lleguen a green. El green está en diagonal respecto a la calle, casi obligando a entrar con un golpe de ‘fade’, o de lo contrario lo normal es que visiten uno de los búnkers. No es un hoyo claro de eagle, pero sí de birdie, aunque el peligro del green está en la parte centro-izquierda.

Hole 14 (par 5): Quite a simple tee shot to a wide fairway, although they should hug the left-hand side, and even carry the bunker, as if they land in the rough on the right it will be difficult to hit the green.

The green sits diagonally to the fairway, almost forcing them to hit a fade, otherwise they will often find themselves in the bunkers. Not a clear eagle opportunity, but it is a birdie chance, however middle-left area of the green can be dangerous.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 15

Hoyo 15 (par 4): Otro hoyo corto como el 8, con el peligro también en el rough de la derecha. Si consiguen acertar con el drive de salida, los únicos problemas que pueden encontrar son en la parte centro-derecha de green, cuyas caídas van a dar que hablar.

Hole 15 (par 4): Another short hole like the 8th, the danger here also lies in the right rough. If they hit a good tee shot, the only difficulty they may find is on the middle-right of the green, where the slopes will create a lot of problems.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 16 Hole 16 (par 4): We’ve recovered an old tee here which is 21 yards further back, putting the bunker 300 yards away.

We’ve created an area of very thick rough by that bunker, so the bail will be on the left, although that is where the ball will bounce the least. The second shot will be a little longer, possibly a 6-iron to a pitching wedge. The green is very narrow and the tricky pin is back-left.

Hoyo 16 (par 4): Hemos recuperado un tee antiguo que está 23 metros más retrasado, lo que deja el búnker a 270 metros de vuelo. Junto a ese búnker, hemos creado una zona de rough muy agresiva, por lo que la zona de escape sería la izquierda, aunque es donde menos bota la bola. El segundo golpe será algo más largo, pudiendo ir desde el hierro 6 al wedge. El green es muy estrecho, y la bandera complicada es fondo-izquierda.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 17 Hoyo 17 (par 3): También hemos alargado 20 metros el hoyo y el golpe ahora es muy exigente, porque hablamos del green más pequeño del campo. Jugarán hierros entre el 6 y el 8 buscando green, y la bandera más compleja será la del fondo-derecha, porque son caídas realmente difíciles las que se ven en esa zona.

Hole 17 (par 3): We have also lengthened this hole by 19 yards and it is now a very demanding shot, because we’re talking about the smallest green on the course. They will be playing between a 6 and an 8-iron and the toughest flag will be backright because of the really tricky undulations in that area.

HOYO ⁄ HOLE 18 Hoyo 18 (par 4): El hoyo más rompecabezas para los jugadores, porque además hemos dejado un rough muy alto en toda la calle. Tendrán que pensar si quieren jugar corto, medio o incluso los más pegadores podrían llegar de uno. El problema de las banderas cortas en ese hoyo es que si no dejas la bola en green o llevan mucho ‘backspin’, su bola puede coger el escape frontal y terminar a 40-50 metros de green.

Hole 18 (par 4): The most strategic hole for the players, because we have let the rough grow up around the whole fairway. They’ll have to decide whether they want to play short or medium, or the big hitters may even go for it in one. The problem with the front flags on this hole is that if you don’t hit the green or get too much backspin, your ball could be swallowed up by the front drop-off and end up 45-55 yards away.

P- ¿Cómo estás viviendo esta temporada de ensueño?

P- How has this dream season been for you?

R- Disfrutándola a tope, voy semana a semana con una línea de aprendizaje muy buena, creciendo como jugador y siempre sumando. Eso es lo importante, que la línea siempre es ascendente.

R- I’m enjoying it so much, I’m on a huge learning curve every week, growing as a player and always getting better. That’s the important thing, that the curve is always on the up.

P- Tu nombre suena entre los grandes favoritos a llevarse el premio a ‘rookie del año, ¿cuál es el secreto para esa tremenda ascensión?

P- Your name is being mentioned among the hot favourites to take the ‘rookie of the year’ award, what’s the secret to your meteoric rise?

R- Cuando llegué al Tour, mi objetivo era sacar cosas positivas de cada semana, y eso se está cumpliendo.

Cada semana estoy más cómodo, me siento que soy cada vez más profesional con todo, y eso me lleva a estar en la lucha por ese trofeo. Hay grandes jugadores con los que compito, pero ojalá tenga un buen final de temporada y a ver si consigo ese título de mejor ‘rookie’.

R- When I arrived on Tour, my goal was to take positives from every week, and I am doing that. Every week I feel more comfortable, I feel increasingly professional at everything, and that has put me in the frame for that trophy. I’m competing with some great players, but hopefully I can have a good end to the season and see if I can win the title of best rookie.

P- ¿Has tenido tiempo de pararte a pensar en que los últimos meses están siendo espectaculares?

P- Have you had time to stop and think about how spectacular your recent months have been?

R- Creo que los momentos buenos sí que se pueden definir como espectaculares, y eso está siendo una gozada, porque estoy muy contento de que mi equipo y yo estemos haciendo las cosas tan bien. Pero creo que me conocéis, soy muy exigente y sé que hay bastantes cosas que todavía se pueden perfilar y hacer mejor, así que no tengo tiempo más que para mirar esos detalles y conseguir ser más consistente y sólido en el futuro.

R- I think that the good moments can be described as spectacular, and that’s wonderful, because I’m very happy that my team and I are doing things right. But I think you know me, I’m very demanding and I know that there are quite a lot of things that can still be finetuned and improved, so I only have time to look at those details and to try and be more consistent and solid in the future.

P- Has pasado por todas las fases previas antes de consolidarte en el Circuito Europeo, ¿notas mucha diferencia entre Alps Tour, Challenge Tour y European Tour? ¿Crees que está muy lejos el PGA Tour?

P- You’ve been through all the tiers before establishing yourself on the European Tour, can you see a big difference between the Alps Tour, the Challenge Tour and the European Tour? Do you the PGA Tour is a long way off?

R- Creo que en los tres circuitos de Europa sí se nota un paso considerable entre cada uno de ellos, tanto en nivel de los jugadores como en la preparación de los campos, especialmente entre Challenge y European Tour. Pero llega un punto en el que empiezas a estar con los mejores de cada circuito y es solo cuestión de detalles que estés en uno o en otro. Y, en cuanto al PGA Tour, creo que se trata de seguir haciendo las cosas bien, seguir poniendo mi nombre arriba cada domingo y pienso que puedo estar allí compitiendo pronto.

R- I think that on the three European Tours, there is a considerable step between each one, both in terms of the players and the preparation of the courses, especially between the Challenge and the European Tour.

But it comes to a point where you start to be among the best on each tour and it’s just a question of the finer details that puts you in one or the other. And, in terms of the PGA Tour, I think it’s a question of continuing to do the right things, continuing to put my name up there every Sunday and I think I can be there competing soon.

P- Hablabas de la importancia de tu equipo, principalmente en la figura de Nacho Garrido, tu entrenador. ¿Cómo es vuestro día a día y la planificación de temporada y torneos importantes?

R- Obviamente, súper agradecido a Nacho, a su dedicación y a todo este tiempo que hemos pasado juntos aprendiendo cada día. Empezamos a trabajar juntos a principios del 2018 con importantes cambios técnicos que pronto dieron resultados, pero sabíamos que era un trabajo a largo tiempo, y poco a poco vamos perfilando detalles y seguimos mejorando. A día de hoy, se trata de echar un ojo de vez en cuando a que las cosas siguen por el buen camino y hacer pequeños ajustes, pero principalmente de lo que más me nutro es de su experiencia, me ayuda a ir más preparado a muchos torneos. Las semanas que pensamos que son más importantes, Nacho se acerca y me ayuda con la preparación, la estrategia… Un ejemplo claro fue el US Open, donde había un par de golpes que no había pegado en mi vida con ese rough tan alto y él me pudo ayuda.

P- You were talking of the importance of your team, mainly of Nacho Garrido, your coach. What is a day in your life like for your season preparation and at important tournaments?

R- Of course, I’m so grateful to Nacho, for his dedication and all this time that we have spent together learning every day. We started working together early in 2018 with significant technical changes that soon bore their fruits, but we knew that it was a long-term project, and little by little we are fine-tuning the small details and we’re still improving. At the moment it is a question of occasionally taking a look at the things that are going well and making small adjustments. But the main thing that I thrive on is his experience, it helps me arrive at the tournaments better prepared. In weeks that we consider more important, Nacho will come up to me and help me with the preparation, the strategy... A clear example was the US Open, where there were a couple of shots I’d never hit in my life with such high rough and he was able to help me.

P- Siguiendo con tu equipo, en la última temporada has cambiado bastantes veces de caddie, pero ahora parece que has encontrado la estabilidad con otro gran ex jugador como Pedro Linhart, ¿crees que es el definitivo?

P- Staying on the subject of your team, last season you changed caddie quite a lot, but now you seem to have found stability with another great ex-player in Pedro Linhart, do you think he will stay with you for good?

R- Sí, aunque es cierto que no hay nada definitivo, puedo decir que estoy con un gran profesional del golf, que es lo más importante en un caddie, que lo haya vivido y haya estado en situaciones similares. Con Pedro ya nos conocíamos de mis etapas amateur en los equipos nacionales y nos llevamos muy bien, así que ahora estamos empezando lo que espero sea una larga carrera juntos.

R- Yes, although of course nothing is permanent, I can say that I’m with a great golf professional, which is the most important thing in a caddie, that he has experienced it and been in similar situations. With Pedro we already know each other from my time as an amateur in national teams and we get on really well, so now we’re starting what I hope will be a long career together.

P- Quedan muchos de los torneos más importantes del año en el European Tour, ¿cuáles son tus objetivos de aquí a final de temporada?

P- Many of the most important tournaments of the year are still to come on the European Tour, what are your goals from here to the end of the season?

R- Desde principio de año, uno de mis principales objetivos era hacer top-30 en la Race to Dubai, así que el primer paso es terminar de materializar eso. Y, por supuesto, ganar, porque he estado cerca de la victoria varias veces este año, así que ojalá pueda hacerlo en este final de temporada.

R- From the start of the year, one of my main goals was to be top-30 in the Race to Dubai, so the first step is to finish that job off. And, of course, to win, because I’ve been close to victory on several occasions this year, so hopefully I can do it at the end of this season.

P- En cuanto al Mutuactivos Open de España, has jugado únicamente el del 2018 y no pudiste superar el corte, ¿con qué expectativas llegas a esta nueva edición?

P- In terms of the Mutuactivos Open de España, you have only played in the 2018 edition and you missed the cut, what are your expectations this year?

R- Es un torneo marcado en rojo en el calendario, voy con mucha ilusión y tengo ganas de que llegue ya y poder disfrutarlo porque jugar en casa siempre es especial. El año pasado aún estaba casi todo por hacer, aún así fue una semana muy chula, pero este año voy con mucha ambición, con la intención de ganar y ojalá se pueda cumplir, pues muchos amigos y familia se van a acercar a verlo y sería especial ganar frente a ellos.

R- It’s a hugely important tournament on my calendar, I’m really looking forward to it and I can’t wait for it to arrive and to be able to enjoy it, because playing at home is always special. Last year I was still not quite ready, even so it was a really cool week, but this year I’m really ambitious about it, I intend to win and hopefully I can do that, as many friends and family are going to come and see it and it would be special to win in front of them.

P- Sobre el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, ¿lo has jugado alguna vez?

P- Have you played at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid before?

R- Hace poco más de un mes me acerqué a visitarlo y apenas pude jugar algún golpe porque estaban en plena preparación, pero me sirvió para estudiarlo y reconocer algunos de sus secretos. Por suerte, tanto Nacho como Pedro lo conocen mucho y seguro que eso me ayuda a interiorizarlo mejor.

R- Just over a month ago I went to see it and I was only allowed to hit a few shots because they were in the middle of preparations, but I was able to study it and find out some of its secrets. Luckily, both Nacho and Pedro know a lot about it and I’m sure that’ll help me to learn it better.

P- Se da la curiosidad de que estuviste un tiempo federado por Madrid, ¿qué significa para ti volver a jugar en la capital?

P- Interestingly, you were a member of the federation in Madrid, what does it mean to come back and play in the capital?

R- Es muy especial, me siento muy acogido en Madrid, de hecho, voy mucho por allí a entrenar con Nacho, a Somosaguas. Siempre estoy a gusto jugando en Madrid y ojalá eso se note en una semana tan especial como la del Open de España.

R- It’s very special, I feel very welcome in Madrid, in fact I go there a lot to train with Nacho, at Somosaguas. I’m always happy playing in Madrid and hopefully you will see that at the Open de España, which is such a special week.

El Mutuactivos Open de España por televisión Hay algo que siempre me saca una sonrisa cuando viajo: ver que están retransmitiendo golf por televisión. En el hall de un hotel, en un bar… Incluso a veces inmortalizo ese momento de placer infantil haciendo fotos que terminan olvidadas en el carrete del teléfono móvil. Y es que en tiempos de omnipresente modernidad tecnológica, me sigue pareciendo que tiene encanto ver en directo un putt que está sucediendo a miles de kilómetros.

Para que suceda la magia, hay muchos elementos detrás de las cámaras. Pongamos por ejemplo el Mutuactivos Open de España 2018. Las imágenes de las hordas de aficionados que celebraban el triunfo de Jon Rahm se vieron en 150 países, con un público potencial de casi 500 millones de hogares. Para ello, la división televisiva del circuito, European Tour Productions, desplazó 10 camiones de retransmisiones y más de 50 trabajadores. Una vez acabado el torneo, tres de ellos se quedaron hasta el martes recogiendo los 30 kilómetros de cable que recorrían el Centro Nacional.

Estas cifras se vuelven más mareantes en un evento como la Ryder Cup, donde se llegan a emplear 140 cámaras de televisión y 80 micrófonos por el campo para que el aficionado que está en su casa sienta hasta el más mínimo detalle.

Presenciar un torneo de golf in situ es una sensación increíble.

Te permite vivir esa transición que va del más mínimo silencio hasta el estallido decibélico que causa una bola cayendo en el hoyo. Sin embargo, el golf supone una particularidad desde el punto de vista del espectador.

acción. En nuestra disciplina favorita, es imposible. Ahí es donde la televisión acude como aliado.

Durante media hora, analizaremos lo ocurrido en el diseño de Javier Arana con especial atención a la situación de los españoles y a los momentos más destacados del día.

Aunque nos separe una pantalla, ojalá seamos capaces de compartir con ustedes toda la emoción e ilusión que nos produce este torneo.

The Mutuactivos Open de España on TV There’s something that always makes me smile when I’m travelling; seeing that they are showing golf on TV. In the foyer of a hotel, in a bar... I even sometimes immortalise that moment of childish pleasure by taking photos that end up lost somewhere in my mobile’s memory.

The fact is, in these times of omnipresent technological modernity, I can still delight in watching a live putt that is happening thousands of kilometres away.

And in order for this magic to happen, there is plenty going on behind the cameras. Let’s use the 2018 Mutuactivos Open de España as an example. The images of the hordes of fans celebrating Jon Rahm’s victory were seen in 150 countries, with a potential audience of 500 million homes. For this, the tour’s television department, European Tour Productions, used 10 broadcasting trucks and over 50 staff. Once the tournament was over, three of them stayed until Tuesday to pick up the 30 kilometres of cable laid all over the Centro Nacional.

These f igures become even more dizzying at an event like the Ryder Cup, where they use as many as 140 television cameras and 80 microphones for the course so that the fans at home can appreciate all the f iner details.

al f rom the point of view of the spectator. In most sports, going to the venue provides you with a perfect view of the action. In our favourite pastime, that is impossible. Which is where television comes in.

Are you unsure whether to visit the Club de Campo or watch the Mutuactivos Open de España on TV? There is no debate. The opportunities to see Jon, Sergio, Rafa and company at arms’ length are few and far between.

Go to the course! But if you can’t, Movistar Golf has a solution for you. As you would expect, Movistar+ channel 59, we are showing special coverage of the event, with 20 hours of live television.

During the f irst two days we are providing pictures both in the morning and afternoon sessions (f rom 12:00 -14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00). On Saturday we’ll be connected to the Club de Campo f rom 13:30 until the end of play.

The start pistol on the f inal day will be provided at 13:00 by our colleague Javier Pinedo with his traditional “hello and welcome”.

By his side, of course, will be professional Nacho Gervás.

As we did with the 2018 Mutuactivos Open de España, at the end of each day we will have the chance to hear the real stars of the tournament speak: the players. Madrid Trophy Promotion, la empresa promotora del Mutua Madrid Open de Tenis, anunció el pasado mes de abril que asumía el mando de la organización del Mutuactivos Open de España hasta 2023. El continuo éxito con el que cada año celebra uno de los eventos deportivos más importantes del mundo es aval más que suficiente para creer que su apuesta por el golf es firme y tienen confianza máxima en relanzar este torneo hasta cotas similares a las del tenis.

El European Tour, ha jugado un papel fundamental en los momentos duros de los últimos años, cuando la supervivencia del torneo estaba bajo interrogantes. Y, por último, pero no por ello menos importante, el quinto pilar es el que ejerce de sede para este gran evento. El Club de Campo Villa de Madrid cuenta con una de las instalaciones de golf más prestigiosas de España por su diseño y ubicación en la capital. Su recorrido negro, diseñado por el arquitecto Javier Arana, ha acogido innumerables pruebas del European Tour, en nueve ocasiones el Open de España y en otras nueve el Open de Madrid, además de ser sede de otros tantos campeonatos federativos.

For this pleasure, that Madrid will be able to enjoy the best golf in the world until 2023, we can thank five main players who have joined forces in order to make this tournament one of the biggest in Continental Europe.

Mutuactivos, Grupo Mutua Madrileña’s mutual and pension fund management entity, will be the main sponsor of golf’s Mutuactivos Open de España. After 14 years of providing its support as the main sponsor of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, which takes place in the Caja Mágica in May, Mutua Madrileña has reaffirmed its commitment to sport through the Mutuactivos Open de España, one of the oldest (since 1912) and most prestigious tournaments in the world.

Madrid Trophy Promotion, the company responsible for promoting the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, announced in April that it was taking over the organisation of the Mutuactivos Open de España until 2023. The repeated success every year of one of the biggest sports events in the world is more than enough evidence that their commitment to golf is a solid one and they are fully confident that they can take this tournament to similar heights as the tennis.

Gerard Tsobanian, president and CEO of the Mutuactivos Open de España, spoke of his satisfaction at the deal: “We’ve been working hand in hand with Mutua Madrileña at the Mutua Madrid Open for 14 years and it has become one of the most important tournaments on the calendar. Therefore, the fact that we are now coming together again for the golf is the best news possible. Another of the fundamental pillars for the viability of the agreement has been the help of the Real Federación Española de Golf. And, last but not least, the fifth pillar is the one that provides the venue for this great event. Club de Campo Villa de Madrid has one of the most prestigious golf facilities in Spain, both in terms of its design and its location in the capital. Its Black Course, designed by architect Javier Arana, has hosted countless European Tour events; the Open de España nine times and the Open de Madrid on a further nine, as well as being the venue for a number of federation championships.

THE 2018 OPEN DE ESPAÑA WAS A TURNING POINT FOR SPANISH GOLF

The 2018 edition of the Open de España turned out perfectly, exceeding even the most optimistic of expectations. This is all the more impressive when you realise that two months before the tournament we were unsure if it would even take place.

The ingredients required for this cake to be baked to perfection were; the rapid work of David Gómez and his team to get the Centro Nacional up to scratch for a European Tour event, the union of the RFEG and the Federación de Madrid de Golf, the presence of almost all the Spanish players and, finally, the more than 50,000 people who packed

the course for the four days, which was a first for our golf.

But every cake needs a cherry on top, and Jon Rahm put it there with his victory after four days of astonishing golf and a nail-biting finish involving another Spaniard, Nacho Elvira.

As with all epic stories, the rain also stole some of the limelight, but this did nothing to dampen people’s spirits, because having Jon Rahm in Madrid for the first time in his professional career meant thousands of fans followed him, many of whom were at their first golf tournament.

El lema del torneo ‘El Open de todos’ se cumplió a la perfección, porque tanto federados como aficionados o, simplemente, amantes del deporte, tuvieron la oportunidad de disfrutar de un evento de primer nivel en el que Jon Rahm no defraudó a nadie y logró poner su nombre en un palmarés de lujo.

A partir de ahí, el golf español comenzaba a vivir una revolución, empezando a las 21:00 horas de ese mismo domingo, cuando Jon Rahm abría el telediario de TVE en directo… ¡EL GOLF ABRIENDO EL TELEDIARIO DE LA 1!

El jugador vasco visitaba los estudios de Televisión Española para ser la primera noticia del informativo, algo que jamás había sucedido en la historia de nuestro golf y que, salvo que hablemos de fútbol, rara vez ocurrió con otros deportes.

Para que algo así ocurra, han de unirse muchos factores, pero el buen talante de Jon Rahm favorece mucho para este tipo de situaciones, pues sabe que ahora mismo es un pilar fundamental para relanzar el golf en España, es consciente de lo importante que es y del ejemplo que representa para muchos niños que sueñan ser como él.

El propio Jon, ganador de varios torneos mucho más importantes (tanto en dinero como en prestigio), asegura que esta fue la victoria más importante de su carrera. Y si para él fue un Open de España que cambió la historia, para el golf español también.

The promise behind the tournament’s slogan, ‘The Open for everyone’, was perfectly fulfilled, because both the federation members and fans, or even just sports lovers, had the chance to enjoy a first-class event at which Jon Rahm delivered the goods and managed to get his name in a prestigious winners’ circle.

From that moment, Spanish golf started to experience a revolution, beginning at 21:00 that Sunday, when Jon Rahm was up first on the live TVE news... GOLF WAS THE FIRST ITEM ON THE CHANNEL 1 NEWS! The Basque player visited the Televisión Española studios for the first news item on the programme, something that had never happened in the history of our golf and that, except in the case of football, rarely occurs in any other sports.

Many facets have to come together for something like that to happen, but Jon Rahm’s enormous talent is a huge factor, and he knows that right now he is a fundamental pillar for the relaunching of golf in Spain, and he is aware of how important it is and that he is a role model for many children that dream of being like him.

Jon himself, who has won several much more important tournaments (both in terms of money and prestige), says that this was the most important victory of his career. And if for him it was an Open de España that changed history, then it did for Spanish golf too.

EL último rey del Club de Campo C

orría el año 2008, concretamente el mes de octubre, cuando Madrid daba a luz a un nuevo torneo del European Tour, el Madrid Masters, y lo hacía en una sede idónea para el golf de alta competición como es el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Con Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño como anf itrión y organizador, el ‘Open de Madrid’ tomaba un nuevo rumbo, una nueva dimensión, pues el jugador madrileño ya era por aquel entonces un jugador consagrado en el Circuito Europeo, pues había ganado ya cuatro torneos, el último apenas dos semanas antes de este Madrid Masters.

El Club de Campo Villa de Madrid volvía al calendario del European Tour tras un parón de tres años, el torneo contaba con la presencia de la ‘Armada Española’ prácticamente al completo y algunos jugadores de talla mundial como el alemán Martin Kaymer, el argentino Ángel Cabrera, o el que terminaría llevándose el triunfo, el sudaf ricano Charl Schwartzel, que unos años más tarde terminaría llevándose el Masters de Augusta.

La relación de amor entre Schwartzel y la ciudad de Madrid había comenzado el año anterior, cuando se impuso en el Open de España 2007, que se celebró en el Centro Nacional de Golf, por un golpe de ventaja sobre el indio Jyoti Randhawa.

El mes de octubre, Madrid y Club de Campo mantienen un idilio ya de varias ediciones y, como todos sabemos, la cambiante climatología de los meses de otoño suele tener mucho poder de decisión en lo que suceda durante estos torneos. Precisamente, en el Madrid Masters 2008, la última jornada se vio muy afectada por la lluvia, pero no por la que cayó durante el juego, sino por la espectacular tromba de agua que recibió el campo durante la madrugada del sábado al domingo.

Esta situación hizo que Schwartzel, líder tras unos fantásticos primeros tres días, no tuviera que suf rir demasiado para llevarse el título, pues el campo estaba muy asequible y los greenes receptivos, dos elementos que, para un tiralíneas como es el jugador sudaf ricano, fueron claves en el domingo. Como dato, indicar que, durante los cuatro días, el jugador nacido en Johannesburgo alcanzó más del 80% de los greenes, algo nada sencillo de hacer en este gran diseño de Javier Arana.

Aquel 12 de octubre, España celebraba su día nacional, por lo que la situación ideal para todo el público que se dio cita en el Club de Campo era la victoria de Pablo Larrazábal, que partía a tres golpes de Schwartzel. Pese a que el barcelonés lo intentó, alentado por los miles de personas que abarrotaban el partido estelar, no fue suf iciente para recuperar un título casi maldito para el golf español, pues el último en ganarlo había sido Severiano Ballesteros en 1995.

Victoria al más puro estilo Schwartzel, y es que, pese a tener 24 años por aquel entonces, el sudaf ricano ya daba muestras de ser un jugador muy f iable de tee a green, una verdadera maza para sus rivales. Tras la primera ronda, ocupaba el noveno puesto, pero un gran segundo día de 64 golpes le aupó hasta un liderato que ya no soltó en toda la semana. Apenas dio signos de flaqueza, llegando a desesperar a todo aquel que osara a atacarle con birdies, como el argentino Ricardo González que terminó segundo a tres golpes, y de esa forma logró la que era su tercera victoria en el principal circuito continental.

t was October 2008, Madrid was introducing a new tournament to the European Tour, the Madrid Masters, and it was doing so at a perfect venue for first-class golf, the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

With Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño as the host and organiser, the ‘Open de Madrid’ set out on a new path, and with a new dimension, as the Madrid golfer was already a well-established player on the European Tour, having won four tournaments, the last just two weeks before that particular Madrid Masters.

The Club de Campo Villa de Madrid was back on the European Tour calendar after a three-year absence, the tournament enjoyed the presence of practically all of the Spanish contingent as well as some worldclass players such as Martin Kaymer, the Argentinian Angel Cabrera and the player who would eventually take the spoils, South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, who a few years later would win a green jacket at the US Masters at Augusta.

The month of October, Madrid and the Club de Campo have shared several successful editions together and, as we all know, the changeable weather in the autumn months often plays a significant role in what happens during these tournaments. Specifically, at the 2008 Madrid Masters the last day was affected by the rain, and not just that which fell during the round, but also the spectacular downpour that hit the course the previous night.

The situation meant that Schwartzel, the leader after an outstanding first three days, was not asked many questions en route to the title, as the course was very accessible and the greens were receptive, two facets that, for an accurate player like the South African, proved key on Sunday. The Johannesburg-born player hit 80% of the greens in regulation over the four days, no mean feat on this great Javier Arana design.

On that 12 October, Spain was celebrating its national day, therefore the ideal result for the fans at Club

de Campo would have been a victory for Pablo Larrazábal, who started three shots behind Schwartzel.

However, despite the Barcelona native’s best efforts, cheered on by the thousands of people packed around the final match, it was not enough for a victory that would have removed a thorn from the side of Spanish golf, as at the time the last home player to win in Madrid was Severiano Ballesteros in 1995.

It was a typical Schwartzel win, and at just 24 years of age the South African was already showing signs of being a highly consistent player tee to green who looked sure to give his future rivals something to think about. After the first day, he sat in ninth place, but a delightful second-round 64 helped him climb to the top of the leaderboard, and there he would remain for the rest of the week. He showed no signs of weakness, much to the frustration of those who dared challenge him with their birdies, such as the Argentine Ricardo Gonzalez, who finished three shots back in second place, and so he sealed his third victory on the continent’s biggest tour.

Hitos, personas y momentos que han marcado la historia del Open de España Durante el Open de España de 1974 en La Manga Club me encontraba trabajando en la recepción de jugadores cuando llegó Manolo Ballesteros y me dijo: “Este chavalín es Seve, mi hermano pequeño, cuídale y estate atenta porque será un gran jugador y dará mucho que hablar”. El tiempo le dio la razón.

La Manga Club (Cartagena, Murcia) albergó el torneo de 1973 a 1977. Gracias a la amistad de su propietario Gregory Peters con Mark McCormack, fundador de IMG, asistió la flor y nata: Gary Player fue segundo en 1974 y al año siguiente se impuso Arnold Palmer, componente del famoso triunvirato junto a Nicklaus y Player. “Fui a jugar el Open de España ¡y gané! Tenía que hacer eagle en el último hoyo y lo conseguí. Guardo muy buenos recuerdos de aquel torneo y de La Manga Club, un gran campo. Me invitó Greg Peters, que era un tipo muy simpático”.

Un hito marcó el Open de 1979 en Torrequebrada (Benalmádena, Málaga). El torneo, considerado entre los mejores del Continente, recibió con entusiasmo la llegada del primer patrocinador, Benson & Hedges, cuyos dirigentes se llevaron un gran

disgusto al fallar Seve el corte. Venció Dale Hayes y fue decisivo para Miguel Ángel Jiménez, que tenía 15 años y trabajaba allí como caddie y bolero, y al ver en acción a Seve, Lyle, Jacklin, Langer, Torrance… decidió hacerse profesional. Fue precisamente Sam Torrance quien venciera en 1982 en el Club de Campo con aplastante superioridad por ocho golpes de ventaja.

Seve ganó dos Open de España en Cataluña, donde se sentía muy querido. Había fallado dos cortes y sumaba cinco tops ten incluyendo un segundo puesto en Escorpión (Valencia) en 1980, y al año siguiente se resarció en el antiguo recorrido de El Prat (Barcelona). En 1985 en Vallromanes (Barcelona) volvió a ganar un Open no exento de dificultades: el sábado diluvió y se anuló la vuelta, el domingo se estableció otro corte a 50 jugadores que disputaron 36 hoyos. En la rueda de prensa previa al torneo Seve dio la alternativa a José Mari Olazábal en su debut profesional; dos años más tarde formaban la mejor pareja de la historia de la Ryder Cup. “¡Esto está que arde!”, la frase más repetida en Las Brisas (Marbella, Málaga) en 1983, perma-

neció muchos años como chascarrillo entre los organizadores. El campeón fue Eamonn Darcy pero Manolo Piñero (2º), José María Cañizares (3º) y Manolo Montes (4º) pusieron la emoción: cada vez que un español se ponía líder, los voluntarios de la Federación Andaluza comunicaban los datos con entusiasmo desbordante: “Prensa, prensa, ¡esto está que arde!”. Fue el año de la aparición del fax que nos facilitó mucho la forma de trabajar, hoy ya en desuso.

juego y los bajos resultados, aquella fue la gota que colmó su poca paciencia. “Avisa a los periodistas, quiero hablar”. Me eché a temblar. Se avecinaba tormenta cada vez que él convocaba a la prensa o llevaba unos folios, que yo sabía que no estaban escritos por él. “¡No reconozco mi campo! Han destruido Pedreña. Deberían tener más respeto y no prepararlo tan fácil. ¡Intolerable! ...”, y así continuó sin necesidad de preguntas, ofreciendo titular tras titular.

El nombre de Bernhard Langer permanecerá unido al Campo de Golf Parador El Saler (Valencia), donde triunfó en dos ocasiones. Firmó 62 golpes en la cuarta jornada en 1984, batió el récord del campo y sentenció el torneo. Dicho récord sigue imbatido. Después de una difícil temporada que casi le hizo abandonar por culpa de los yips, regresó con su putt “escoba” en 1989 “a uno de los mejores campos del mundo, que me devolvió la ilusión y confianza en mi juego”. Se impuso con tres de ventaja sobre José Mª Cañizares y Paul Carrigil. Olazábal fue cuarto.

Rodger Davies venció en 1990 en el Club de Campo con un golpe menos que Faldo, Peter Fowler y Langer. En 1991 en el mismo escenario, Eduardo Romero y Seve protagonizaron uno de los playoffs más largos del European Tour: siete hoyos extra. Memorable. Jugaron el hoyo 18, el 17, volvieron al 18… y continuaban igualados; 17, 16, 17… hasta que por fin se impuso “el Gato”. Les pedí que acudiesen juntos al Centro de Prensa donde el argentino hizo un comentario de mucha repercusión: “Estoy muy contento porque he derrotado al mejor del mundo, y a la vez me siento muy triste por haberle ganado a Seve, mi ídolo de toda la vida y un gran amigo”. Vijay Singh completó el podio, Langer fue cuarto.

En el 87 de nuevo en Las Brisas, otro hito marcó el devenir del torneo: el patrocinador, Peugeot, instaló por primera vez una carpa de hospitalidad. Dos personajes ‘revolucionaron’ aquella edición. Jack Nicklaus se encontraba en Europa diseñando un campo y llegó a recoger a su hijo Jack que falló el corte. Le pedí que compareciese ante los medios de comunicación, fue muy interesante y tuvo enorme repercusión. En la entrega de premios del Pro-Am en aquella carpa que entonces nos pareció gigantesca, actuó la gran Lola Flores; al día siguiente recibimos quejas de residentes cercanos al campo que no pudieron conciliar el sueño a causa del cante y singular taconeo de ‘la Faraona’. Los periodistas británicos se hicieron eco de otro hecho para ellos relevante: Olazábal, que ya ostentaba dos títulos y había fallado el corte, se ofreció y jugó como marcador el sábado. Ese año debutó en la Ryder Cup. Seve ya había logrado cuatro de sus cinco Grandes y el Open desembarcó en ‘su casa’ en el 88 para rendirle homenaje, envuelto en polémicas.

Diez días antes de su celebración el Gobierno de España prohibió la participación de jugadores sudafricanos; distintas competiciones se vieron afectadas por culpa del “apartheid” en muchos países. Durante las dos primeras jornadas se entregaron vueltas de 63 golpes, entre ellas la del campeón Mark James; en la tercera ronda Faldo firmó 62 y Wayne Riley 61. Para Seve, que llevaba días rumiando su malestar por la lentitud del

El deseo de Peugeot era mantener el torneo en el Club de Campo, pero una huelga del personal de restauración meses antes de la edición de 1992 obligó a trasladarlo al R.A.C.E., allí se disputaron dos ediciones que se saldaron con sendos tops ten de relumbrón, sobre todo en 1993 cuando dominó Joakim Haeggman seguido por Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, José Mari Olazábal e Ian Woosnam.

En 1994 regresó al Club de Campo donde Colin Montgomerie logró el quinto de sus treintaiún títulos. Langer, Els, Ballesteros y Olazábal se colaron en el top ten. ¡Lo más granado!

El 21 de mayo de 1995 fue uno de los días más felices en la vida de Seve. Fue un Open especial por varias razones: Seve y Chema venían de ganar el ‘Perrier por equipos’ en Francia, eran la máxima atracción y compartieron las primeras vueltas; el expresidente del Gobierno, Adolfo Suárez, jugó el Pro-Am con Olazábal; se acreditaron más periodistas que en ediciones anteriores; asistió más público que nunca; junto a Seve subieron al podio Nacho Garrido y Pepín Rivero.

El domingo Seve empezó con tres bogeys e hizo birdie en el cuatro; el liderato cambiaba constantemente de mano entre Seve, Nacho, Pepín y Gordon Brand Jr. (qué tristeza su reciente pérdida, era un tipo genial y le volvía loco nuestro país). Seve firmó sendos birdies en el 12 y el 15

para ponerse en cabeza y así llegó al 18, ante un público deseoso de verle ganar. Pegó hierro uno al centro de la calle, “aprochó” a metro y medio y brindó el birdie a la galería. “La clave de la victoria estuvo en ser paciente y en el apoyo del público”, reconoció. Llevaba años pasándolo mal y los últimos meses habían sido frustrantes: su juego había empezado a abandonarle y se agravaron los dolores de espalda. Seve nunca olvidaría aquella soleada tarde en el Club de Campo con el público subiendo por la calle del hoyo 18 y el green abarrotado, imagen que con frecuencia le gustaba recordar.

Del 2003 en Costa Adeje (Tenerife), a pesar del playoff a tres bandas para decidir al ganador, Kenneth Ferrie, lo primero que me viene a la memoria es la imagen sonriente de Pablo Martín Benavides. El malagueño, de 17 años, asombró a todos por su simpatía y espontaneidad, y acaparó los titulares al convertirse en el primer amateur en co-liderar una prueba del European Tour después de 54 hoyos. Concluyó vigesimosegundo empatado. Cuatro años después daría el salto internacional: fue el primer amateur en ganar un título del Tour al conquistar el Open de Portugal.

Aunque Padraig Harrington (capitán de la Ryder Cup 2020) alzó el trofeo en 1996, el protagonista de la primera jornada en el Club de Campo fue Sergio García, tenía 16 años e hizo 68 golpes. Cuando le pedí que me acompañase a hablar con los periodistas me miró asustado, “no te preocupes, estaré a tu lado para ayudarte”, le tranquilicé. Era la primera vez que se sentaba en la sala de entrevistas, miraba a todos los lados con los ojos bien abiertos y muy sorprendido. Aquel Open suf rió varios retrasos por tormentas y fue el de los teléfonos móviles; por primera vez se colocaron carteles rogando evitasen usarlos, ¡y eso que todavía no incorporaban cámaras!

Tras el periplo de 2002 a 2004 por las Islas Canarias, la Federación Española y Reale tomaron las riendas del Open en 2007 y lo llevaron al Centro Nacional (Madrid), donde Carlos Rodiles mantuvo en jaque al ganador, Charl Schwartzel, empeñado en un imposible: que aprendiésemos a pronunciar su nombre.

En 1997 en La Moraleja 2 (Madrid) Mark James se impuso en el tercer hoyo de playoff a Greg Norman, que vino invitado por Seve y fue la atracción del torneo. El “gran tiburón blanco”, que en múltiples ocasiones se ha declarado un forofo de España -“este país ha sido muy importante en mi carrera”- y de nuestras costumbres, cogió su avión el martes después de entrenar y se marchó a Burgos a una corrida de toros, que presenció en barrera.

El Open volvió al antiguo recorrido de El Prat dos años seguidos. Thomas Björn venció en 1998 con Olazábal a un golpe. Jarmo Sandelin se hizo con el título en 1999, y Nacho Garrido, Miguel Ángel Jiménez y Paul McGinley compartieron la segunda posición; sin embargo, otros dos españoles suscitaron toda la atención aquella semana.

El miércoles fue un día grande gracias a sendas ruedas de prensa de campanillas: Olazábal, que acababa de conseguir su segunda chaqueta verde, y Sergio García que debutaba como profesional. Tres años después, el castellonense se proclamó campeón en El Cortijo (Gran Canaria) donde un jovencísimo Rafa Cabrera-Bello lograba el cuarto puesto siendo amateur.

De las ediciones celebradas en el Real Club Sevilla Golf, hubo dos emocionantes. Nacho Garrido volvía a quedarse a las puertas del triunfo en 2008. En la segunda jornada batió el récord del campo y cayó en playoff ante Peter Lawrie, quien, en la recogida de tarjetas, vio en televisión el “purazo” de 10 metros de Nacho para empatar. Saldaron el primer hoyo del desempate con birdie y jugaron el 18 por tercera vez: Lawrie se fue al bunker, Garrido cogió calle, pero el segundo golpe botó en green… y al agua. El público tuvo que aplaudir el triunfo del irlandés.

El abrazo con la familia en el green del 18 siempre es emotivo, pero uno de los más emocionantes que he visto en mi vida fue el de Álvaro Quirós con sus padres y con María, su novia entonces y hoy madre de sus dos hijos, cuando en 2010 se impuso en Sevilla a James Morrison. Quirós y Alejandro Cañizares (3º) hicieron vibrar a los miles de espectadores. “Ganar el Open de España fue muy grande, cumplí un sueño que tenía desde que era un niño”, declaró el de Guadiaro. Morrison se quitó la espina al vencer en El Prat en 2015.

Pocos recordarán que el ganador de 2011 en el actual recorrido de El Prat fue Thomas Aitken y Pablo Larrazábal tercero. Aquella triste edición quedó marcada por el fallecimiento de Seve; cuando conocimos su gravedad, todo lo demás pasó a un segundo plano. Las imágenes del minuto de silencio en memoria de Ballesteros dieron la vuelta al mundo.

El listado de periodistas acreditados se duplicó a partir del viernes: todos los medios, nacionales y extranjeros, querían entrevistar a los compañeros de Seve y glosar su figura.

En 2014 Miguel Ángel Jiménez se mostró exultante y “como pez en el agua” en el PGA de Catalunya (Girona). El “Pisha”, que sabe disfrutar de la vida como pocos, comenzaba cada rueda de prensa detallando las cenas en sus restaurantes favoritos de la zona. “¿Mi secreto? Comer bien, fumar puros, aceite de oliva, una copa de vino… y un poquito de gimnasio. Hago lo que me gusta en la vida, y jugar al golf es lo que verdaderamente me llena”, admitió al conseguir el trofeo a sus 50 años. No lo tuvo fácil: empatado con Richard Green y Thomas Pieters, el torneo se decidió en el primer hoyo de playoff.

El Real Club Valderrama encumbró en 2016 a Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston, uno de los ganadores más populares del Open, que en aquella edición contó con la colaboración del European Tour y la Federación Española; Sergio García ejerció de anfitrión a través de su Fundación.

Jon Rahm defenderá el título que conquistó el año pasado. Me vienen a la memoria varias imágenes del Centro Nacional: la fuerza y determinación de Jon al afirmar el martes “he venido a ganar”; la hora larga que cada día dedicaba a firmar autógrafos y hacerse fotos con los más pequeños; el volcado apoyo del público a todos los españoles; Nacho Elvira y Diego Suazo enarbolando nuestra bandera en el 18; y el campo abarrotado como nunca antes habíamos visto.

Me quedo con esa última imagen que espero volver a ver en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

During the 1974 Open de España at La Manga Club, I was working on player registration when Manolo Ballesteros approached me and said “This kid is Seve, my younger brother, look after him and pay attention because he’s going to be a great player and will do great things”. Time would prove him right.

La Manga Club (Cartagena, Murcia) hosted the tournament from 1973 to 1977. Thanks to its owner Gregory Peters’ friendship with Mark McCormack, the founder of IMG, the crème de la crème was there; Gary Player finished second in 1973 and the following year the victor was Arnold Palmer, a member of the famous ‘great triumvirate’ alongside Nicklaus and Player. “I went to play the Open de España, and I won! I had to eagle the final hole and I did. I have great memories of that tournament and of La Manga Club, a great course. Greg Peters invited me, he was a real nice guy”.

The 1979 Spanish Open in Torrequebrada (Benalmadena, Malaga) was something of a milestone.

The tournament, considered one of the best on the continent, enthusiastically welcomed the arrival of its first sponsor, Benson & Hedges, whose directors were greatly displeased when Seve missed the cut. Dale Hayes won and it was a decisive year for Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who was 15 years old and working as a caddie and ball collector; after seeing Seve, Lyle, Jacklin, Langer, Torrance, etc. in action he decided to become a professional. It was Sam Torrance who would win in 1982 at the Club de Campo with an astonishing eight-shot victory.

Seve won two Opens de España in Catalonia, where he was always well-loved. He had missed two cuts and collected five top-tens, including a second position at Escorpin (Valencia) in 1980, and the following year he did one better at the El Prat old course (Barcelona). In 1985, at Vallromanes (Barcelona), he won another Spanish Open, but not without difficulty; there was a huge downpour and the day’s round was cancelled, so there was a further cut on Sunday, when 50 players played 36 holes. In the press conference before the tournament, Seve took José María Olazábal under his wing on his professional debut; two years later they would form the best partnership in the history of the Ryder Cup. “Things are hotting up!”, the phrase was heard so frequently at Las Brisas (Marbella, Malaga) in 1983, that it became something of an inside joke

The champion was Eamonn Darcy but Manolo Piñero (2nd), José María Cañizares (3rd) and Manolo Montes (4th) were the source of all the excitement; every time a Spaniard took the lead, the volunteers from the Andalusian Federation communicated the details with great enthusiasm: “Press, press, things are hotting up!”. It was the year when the advent of the fax made our work much easier, now of course it has completely fallen out of use.

The name Bernhard Langer became permanently associated with the Parador El Saler Golf Course (Valencia), where he won twice. He signed for a 62 in the fourth round in 1984, breaking the course record to win the tournament. His record is still unbeaten today. After a difficult season where he almost had to retire because of the yips, he returned with his broom-handle putter in 1989 “to one of the most difficult courses in the world, which gave me back my passion and trust in my game”. He won by three strokes over José María Cañizares and Paul Carrigil. Olazábal was fourth.

In ’87, back at Las Brisas, we saw another milestone for the tournament; the sponsor, Peugeot, installed a hospitality tent for the first time. Two players ‘revolutionised’ that year’s event. Jack Nicklaus was in Europe designing a course and he came to collect his son Jack, who had missed the cut. I asked him to appear before the press, it was extremely interesting and it received a lot of coverage. At the prize-giving for the pro-am, in that tent that used to seem so huge to us, the great Lola Flores performed and the next day we received complaints from residents close to the course that they could not get to sleep because of the singing and the unusual foot-tapping of ‘la Faraona’. The British press reported another incident that was relevant to them; Olazábal, who by now had two titles to his name and had missed the cut, volunteered to play as a marker on Saturday. Later that year he would make his Ryder Cup debut.

Seve had already won four of his five majors and the Open de España was held at his home course in ’88 as an homage to him that was steeped in controversy. Ten days before the tournament, the Spanish government prohibited the participation of South African players; various competitions were affected because of the “apartheid” in many countries. There were rounds of 63 on the first two days, including that of the champion Mark James; in the third round Faldo signed

for 62 and Wayne Riley produced a 61. Seve, who had been speaking of his discontent at the slow play and the low scores, reached the end of his tether. “Tell the journalists that I want to speak to them”. I started to shake. A storm would brew every time he called on the press or had some sheets of paper with him, which I knew he hadn’t written. “I don’t recognise my own course!

They’ve destroyed Pedreña. They should be more respectful and not make it so easy. It’s unacceptable!”, and so he continued, there was no need to ask him questions as he reeled off headline after headline.

In 1991, on the same stage, Eduardo Romero and Seve produced one of the longest playoffs on the European Tour; seven extra holes. It was certainly memorable. They played the 18th, then the 17th, then back to the 18th... and they were still level; 17, 16, 17... until finally “el Gato” had his way. I asked them to attend the Press Centre together and the Argentinian made a comment that appeared in all the papers: “I’m very happy because I defeated the best in the world, but I’m also very sad because I beat Seve, my life-long idol and a great friend”. Vijay Singh completed the podium, while Langer was fourth.

Peugeot wanted to keep the tournament at Club de Campo, but a strike by the catering personnel months before the 1992 edition forced it to be moved to the R.A.C.E., where it stayed for two years that produced a pair of star-studded leaderboards, particularly in 1993, when Joakim Haeggman won with Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, José María Olazábal and Ian Woosnam snapping at his heels. In 1994, the event returned to Casa de Campo, where Colin Montgomerie claimed the fifth of his thirty-one titles. Langer, Els, Ballesteros and Olazábal, the superstars of the day, were all in the top ten.

The 21st of May 1995 was one of the happiest days in Seve’s life. It was a special Spanish Open for many reasons; Seve and Chema (Olazábal) had just won the Perrier team event in France, they were the star attraction and played together in the first two rounds; the ex-president of the Spanish government, Adolfo Suárez, played in the pro-am with Olazábal; more journalists were accredited than in previous years; more fans attended than ever before; Seve shared the podium with Nacho Garrido and Pepin Rivero. He started Sunday with three bogies and made a birdie on

the fourth; the leadership constantly changed hands between Seve, Nacho, Pepin and Gordon Brand Jr. (his recent passing was so sad, he was a wonderful man and he was crazy about our country). Seve made birdies on the 12th and 15th to go back to the top of the leaderboard, where he stayed until he reached the 18th, in front of a crowd that wanted to see him win. He hit an iron to the middle of the fairway, dispatched his second to inside six feet and rewarded the gallery with a birdie. “The key to the victory lay in being patient and in the support from the crowd”, he recognised. He had been having a hard time for years and the recent months had been frustrating; his game had started to desert him and his back pain was getting worse. Seve would never forget that sunny afternoon at the Club de Campo with the fans swarming down the 18th fairway and crowding round the green, it is a moment that he often liked to remember.

Although Padraig Harrington (the 2020 Ryder Cup captain) lifted the trophy in 1996, the star of the first day at Club de Campo that year was Sergio García, he was 16 and he shot 68. When I asked him to come with me to talk to the journalists he looked at me frightened, “don’t worry, I’ll be by your side to help you”, I said to calm him.

It was the first time he had sat in the interview chair, he was looking all around him, wide-eyed and stunned. That Open de España suffered various storm delays and it was the first one with mobile phones; for the first time there were signs up asking people not to use them, and they didn’t even have cameras yet!

In 1997, at La Moraleja 2 (Madrid), on the third hole of the playoff Mark James beat Greg Norman, who was invited by Seve and was the tournament’s biggest attraction. The ‘Great White Shark’, who has frequently declared himself a lover of Spain – “this country has been very important in my career” – and our customs, boarded his plane after Tuesday’s practice and left for Burgos, where he attended a bull fight, watching from the front row.

The event returned to the old El Prat course for the next two years. Thomas Björn won in 1998 with Olazábal one stroke back. Jarmo Sandelin took the title in 1999 and Nacho Garrido, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Paul McGinley shared second place; however, two other Spaniards stole the limelight that week. Wednesday was a big day because of two important press conferences; that of Olazábal, who had just won his

second green jacket, and Sergio García, who was making his debut as a professional. Three years later, the player from Castellon won the title at El Cortijo (Gran Canaria) where a very young Rafa Cabrera-Bello finished fourth as an amateur.

From 2003, at Costa Adeje (Tenerife), despite a three-way playoff to decide the winner, Kenneth Ferrie, the first thing that comes to my mind is the image of a smiling Pablo Martín Benavides.

The 17-year-old Malaga native stunned everyone with his wit and spontaneity and stole the headlines by becoming the first amateur to co-lead a European Tour event after 54 holes. He finished tied twenty-second. Four years later, he would make his international breakthrough by becoming the first amateur to win on the Tour when he captured the Open de Portugal title. (We really miss you Pablo!).

After spending 2002 to 2004 in the Canary Islands, the Federación Española and Reale took the reins for the 2007 Spanish Open, bringing it to the Centro Nacional (Madrid), where Carlos Rodiles made things difficult for the winner, Charl Schwartzel, who was determined to do the impossible; teach us how to pronounce his name.

Of the editions held at the Real Club Sevilla Golf, there were two particularly emotional ones. Nacho Garrido was close victory once more in 2008.

On the second day he beat the course record and eventually lost a playoff against Paul Lawrie, who, watched from the scoring hut as Nacho drained a 30-foot putt to tie him. They both birdied the first playoff hole and then played the 18th for a third time; Lawrie found the bunker, Garrido the fairway, but his second ball bounced from the green into the water. All the fans could do was applaud the Scot’s victory.

The family hug on the 18th green is always an emotional moment, but one of the most moving I have seen in my life was that of Álvaro Quirós with his parents and María, his then girlfriend, now the mother of his two children, when he won in Seville in 2010 beating James Morrison.

Quirós and Alejandro Cañizares (3rd) gave the hordes of spectators plenty to get excited about.

“Winning the Open de España was huge, I realised a dream that I have had since I was a kid”, said the player from Guadiaro. Morrison would redeem himself at El Prat in 2015.

Few people will remember that the 2011 winner at the new El Prat course was Thomas Aitken, with Pablo Larrazábal in third. That sad year will be remembered for the passing of Seve; when we heard about his condition, everything else took a back seat. The images of the minute’s silence in memory of Ballesteros were shown around the world. The list of accredited journalists doubled on Friday; all the media agencies, national and international, wanted to interview Seve’s peers and remember the great man.

In 2014, Miguel Ángel Jiménez was exultant as he took to the PGA de Catalunya (Girona) like a duck to water. “Pisha”, who knows how to enjoy life like few others, started every press conference by describing his dinners at his favourite restaurants in the area. “My secret? Eat well, smoke cigars, olive oil, a glass of wine... and a little bit of gym.

I do what I like in life and playing golf is what really satisfies me”, he admitted when he stole the crown at 50 years of age. It was not straight forward though, after finishing tied with Richard Green and Thomas Pieters, he put the tournament to bed on the first playoff hole.

The Real Club Valderrama crowned Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston in 2016, one of the most popular winners at the tournament, which that year was run by the European Tour and the Federación Española; Sergio García hosted through his foundation.

Now John Rahm will bid to defend the title he claimed last year. Several images of the Centro Nacional come to my mind; Jon’s strength and determination when he said on Tuesday “I have come to win”; the long hour he spent signing autographs and taking photographs with the children every day; the strong support of all the Spanish players from the home fans; Nacho Elvira and Diego Suazo flying our flag on the 18th green; the course packed with more fans than I’ve ever seen. And I’ll leave you with the latter, which I hope to see again at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

on tiempos de cambio e ilusión en el golf español con el Mutuactivos Open de España, torneo con solera que ha incorporado este año un nuevo equipo de trabajo con la expertise del Mutua Madrid Open de Tenis. No es momento de entrar en comparaciones entre dos especialidades cuyo carácter individual y el germen de club ha hecho que se asociara con frecuencia. Consolidar un torneo de tenis es más sencillo que uno de golf. Sobre todo, por la facilidad que tiene el tenis para construir héroes a través de los éxitos.

Las estrellas de la raqueta ganan, como mínimo, un 80 por ciento de sus desafíos, de partidos. El golf, por naturaleza, está lleno de sinsabores. Se pierde más que se gana. El mejor Tiger Woods de la historia sumó un sobresaliente registro de un 30 por ciento de victorias.

En siete de cada 10 torneos no ganó. Difícil gancho para los profanos. También complicado magnetismo de un deporte al que se le ha etiquetado de elitista desde un prisma miope.

El comienzo está bien construido. Se ha escogido un escenario dentro de la ciudad, el Club de Campo, algo inusual en los grandes circuitos, también en el Grand Slam, donde los escenarios, por lo general, se alzan en pequeñas localidades de una historia centenaria o en soberbios resorts. Uno de los recorridos más emblemáticos de Madrid, seguramente el que más, alberga un torneo que pretende crecer progresivamente. En eso el golf también

se separa del tenis. Una gran bolsa en premios no asegura un gran cartel internacional.

El torneo lo tuvo en otra era cuando los Seve, Langer, Faldo y compañía se hacían favores entre ellos y elevaban el caché de sus torneos nacionales, en varios de los cuales eran incluso promotores.

Por eso hay que aplaudir el compromiso logrado por los tres principales golfistas españoles, que apoyarán con su presencia el torneo. Jon Rahm, Sergio García y Rafa Cabrera, el trío que combina el European Tour con el PGA Tour cada temporada, han arrimado el hombro. Y ese será el punto de partida para que el golf vuelva a expresar que es un deporte de masas. En realidad, por licencias, ya lo es; falta confirmar que en consumo también resulta.

Un primer episodio exitoso, en el que el envoltorio va a ser sobresaliente -en eso el equipo de Gerard Tsobanian no tiene oposición-, acarreará nuevos retos cuya meta no es otra que situar al Open de España en el segundo torneo más importante del continente después del Open Británico. Escribirlo es más fácil que culminarlo.

Especialmente Rahm ha acelerado la recuperación del volumen de atenciones en el golf en España, que recibió asistencia artificial con la chaqueta verde

de Sergio García en 2017. Habían pasado 18 años sin títulos en los grandes, el termómetro que en medio de la feroz competencia deportiva es lo que mide el gran público. El golfista de Barrika, defensor del título, vuelve a Madrid convertido en una referencia mundial después de un verano prodigioso en el que logró más top 10 que ningún otro jugador mundial y una victoria en el Abierto de Irlanda. El golf tiene que aprovechar este momento: la oferta es realmente interesante. Ojalá la demanda responda.

hese are times of change and of dreams in Spanish golf with the Mutuactivos Open de España, a tournament of some pedigree, which has this year incorporated a new team with the expertise of tennis’ Mutua Madrid Open. This is not the place to enter into comparisons between two disciplines whose individual nature and club culture mean they are often associated with one another. Establishing a tennis tournament is much simpler than a golf tournament, above all because of the ease in tennis of creating heroes through success stories.

The stars in tennis win at least 80 percent of their challenges, or matches. Golf, by nature, is full of heartache. You lose more than you win. At his historic best, Tiger Woods produced an outstanding 30 percent victory rate. He failed to win seven of every 10 tournaments. This makes it difficult to reel in the layman. It is also difficult make a sport attractive when it has short-sightedly been labelled elitist.

The foundations are well laid.

A stage in the centre of the city has been chosen, Club de Campo, somewhat unusual on the big tours, and among the majors, where the venues are generally found in small towns with centuries of history or in haughty resorts. One of the most emblematic courses in Madrid, if not the most, is hosting a tournament that intends to grow progressively. Golf also differs from tennis is this regard. A large purse does not guarantee an all-star international field. The tournament had that in a bygone era when Seve, Langer, Faldo and company would do one another favours to increase the pull of their national tournaments, for which they were often even promotors.

This is why we should applaud the commitment garnered from Spain’s biggest three golfers, who will

be supporting with their presence at the tournament. Jon Rahm, Sergio García and Rafa Cabrera, the trio that juggles the European and PGA Tours every season have come together. And that could be the turning point for golf to express itself as a sport for the masses once more. In reality, in terms of the number of licences, it already is; its consumption just needs to catch up. A successful first chapter, in which the packaging will be outstanding –Gerard Tsobanian’s team is unrivalled in this regard-, will entail new challenges whose goal is none other than making the Open de España the second most important tournament on the continent after The Open. Easier said than done.

In particular, Rahm has accelerated the recovery in the volume of interest in golf in Spain, with a little help from Sergio’s green jacket in 2017. It had been 18 years since the last major title, the barometer that in the midst of ferocious sporting competition serves as a reference to the general public. The golfer from Barrika, also the defending champion, is back in Madrid as a global superstar after a prodigious summer in which he recorded more top 10s than any other golfer on the planet plus a victory at the Irish Open.

Golf has to make the most of this moment; the product on supply is truly interesting, let’s hope the demand responds.

ás de 100 años de historia contemplan al Open de España, lo que lo convierten en el tercer torneo más antiguo de Europa, tan sólo por detrás del Open de Francia y del Open Británico, el único ‘major’ que se disputa en el Viejo Continente.

En estas 95 ediciones ha dado tiempo a que este torneo vea un poco de todo, desde nacimiento de estrellas como Sergio García (su primer torneo profesional fue el Open del 99), hasta triunfos de jugadores como Arnold Palmer, ‘el Rey del Golf’, pasando por la última victoria del gran Severiano Ballesteros. Hacemos un repaso de todas ellas: Viajamos hasta el año 1984 para disfrutar de un hecho histórico, el espectacular récord del campo que estableció Bernhard Langer en el Parador de El Saler para terminar imponiéndose por dos golpes al inglés Howard Clark. 62 golpes fueron los que necesitó el jugador alemán para completar su última vuelta y culminar así una gran remontada el domingo. Precisamente, El Saler es un diseño del gran Javier Arana, como también lo es la sede de este Open de España 2019, ¿veremos otro récord del campo este año?

El campo valenciano de El Saler fue también testigo en 2013 de un playoff histórico, el que disputaron el chileno Felipe Aguilar, el alemán Max Kieffer y el francés Raphael Jacquelin, con victoria para este último tras nueve hoyos de desempate. Este playoff fue, junto con el del Dutch Open en 1989, el más largo de la historia del European Tour, superando las dos horas de duración.

En la década de los 70, destacamos dos fechas por encima del resto, la primera es la de 1972, año que cambió la historia de este torneo el pasar a formar parte del calendario regular del European Tour. El torneo entraba en otra dimensión, las grandes estrellas empezarían a venir, y el estreno del nuevo palmarés fue para Antonio Garrido. El golfista madrileño conquistó en el Golf de Pals (Gerona) su único Mutuactivos Open de España en playoff ante, el también español, Valentín Barrios.

El otro año que luce más en el historial de este torneo es 1975, pues ahí nos encontramos con uno de los ganadores más ilustres que ha tenido el abierto nacional, Arnorld Palmer. El hombre que muchos piensan modernizó el golf visitó España, concretamente el imponente campo de La Manga (Murcia), y se impuso con enorme claridad en el torneo. Fue el único jugador en bajar del par del campo (-5), aventajando en cinco golpes al segundo clasificado, John Fourie, y en siete al anteriormente citado Valentín Barrios.

Ya en los años 90, hay una parada obligada, y es que, en 1995, precisamente en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, se vivió uno de los momentos más emocionantes del golf español, puesto que Severiano Ballesteros logró su última victoria como jugador profesional, y lo hizo ante una de las mayores cantidades de público que se recuerdan en un torneo disputado en suelo español. El de Pedreña levantaba pasiones, había descubierto el golf para muchos españoles, y esa semana, ya en la recta final de su carrera, dejó su última perla,

consiguiendo su tercer Open de España, algo que nadie más ha logrado en la etapa moderna. Vivió un precioso duelo ante Ignacio Garrido, al que terminó venciendo por dos golpes.

Una vez terminaba la era Seve Ballesteros en el golf español, arrancaba la de Sergio García, que antes de ganar el Open de España 2002, jugó los años 1996, 1997 y 1998 pero todavía como jugador amateur. No fue hasta 1999 cuando el de Castellón hizo su debut como jugador profesional en el Open de España que se disputó en el recorrido catalán de El Prat, logrando un 25º puesto.

Precisamente, El Prat, fue testigo del Open de España con recuerdo más triste para el mundo del golf, pues durante el torneo de 2011 nos dejó Severiano Ballesteros tras muchos meses de lucha contra el cáncer. Aquella semana fue un continuo recuerdo al golfista cántabro, la competición era lo de menos, pues nadie terminaba de creerse lo sucedido. El hombre que cambió la historia de este deporte fallecía en plena semana de su Open de España.

En los años anteriores a la entrada del European Tour, 1972, el Open de España tuvo varios nombres muy importantes, como el de Ángel De La Torre, campeón de este torneo hasta en cinco ocasiones (1916, 1917, 1919, 1923 y 1925), o el de Mariano Provencio, que lo ganó cuatro años, o los que se llevaron tres ediciones, como Marcelino Morcillo o Gabriel González.

También cabe destacar que este torneo lo han conquistado dos jugadores amateurs, el brasileño Mario González en 1947, y el Conde de Lamaze, jugador francés que ganó en 1955.

he Open de España has over 100 years of history, making it the third oldest tournament in Europe, only behind the French Open and The Open, the only major played on the Old Continent.

Its 95 editions have provided time for this tournament to witness something of everything, f rom the birth of stars like Sergio García (his f irst professional tournament was the 1999 Spanish Open, to victories f rom the likes of Arnold Palmer ‘The King’ and the late great Severiano Ballesteros’ f inal triumph. Let’s take a look back at all of them: A trip back to 1984 allows us to enjoy a historic moment, Bernhard Langer’s spectacular course record at the Parador de El Saler to beat Englishman Howard Clark by two shots. 62 strokes were all the German needed to complete his f inal round and an astonishing Sunday comeback. El Saler is a Javier Arana design, as is the venue for the 2019 Open de España, will we see another course record this year?

The Valencian course in El Saler also witnessed a historic playoff in 2013, between Chilean Felipe Aguilar, German player Max Kieffer and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin, in which the latter was victorious after nine extra holes.

The Madrid player was victorious at Golf de Pals (Gerona), winning his only Mutuactivos Open de España in a playoff against fellow Spaniard Valentin Barrios.

Once Seve Ballesteros’ era in Spanish golf was over, so began that of Sergio Garcia, who before winning the 2002 Open de España played in 1996, 1997 and 1998 when he was still an amateur. It was not until 1999 when the boy f rom Castellon made his debut as a professional at the Open de España, which that year was played on Catalonian course El Prat, where he f inished 25th.

Another notable year in the history of this tournament was 1975, where we f ind one of the most illustrious winners of our national open, Arnold Palmer. The man who many credit with modernising golf came to Spain, more specif ically to La Manga (Murcia), and cruised to victory. He was the only player under par (-5), f ive shots ahead of the second-placed John Fourie, and seven ahead of the above-mentioned Valentin Barrios.

The same El Prat course witnessed undoubtedly the saddest Open de España for the world of golf, as during the 2011 tournament Severiano Ballesteros passed away after a long battle against cancer.

That week was a continuous reminder of the Cantabrian golfer, the competition was merely a sideshow, as nobody could quite process what had happened. The man who changed the history of this sport had passed away during the week of the Open de España.

The 90s provided us with a shoe-in for the list, as 1995, here at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, fans witnessed one of the most emotional moments in Spanish golf, as Severiano Ballesteros sealed his f inal professional victory before one of the biggest crowds ever seen at a tournament on Spanish soil. The man f rom Pedreña roused the people’s passions, he had made golf accessible to many Spaniards, and that week, in the f inal stretch of his career, he left them with one f inal touch of magic, winning his third Open de España, something that nobody else has done in the modern era. He produced an enthralling duel against Ignacio Garrido, eventually beating him by two shots.

In the years before it formed part of the European Tour, in 1972, the Open de España produced many important champions, such as Angel De La Torre, champion of the tournament on f ive occasions (1916, 1917, 1919, 1923 and 1925), Mariano Provencio, who won it four times, and those who claimed a hat trick of crowns, such as Marcelino Morcillo and Gabriel González.

It is also worth mentioning that this tournament has been won by two amateurs, the Brazilian Mario Gonzalez in 1974, and Frenchman Conde de Lamaze, who claimed the title in 1955.

THE BENEFITS OF A FIXED VENUE

The 2019 Mutuactivos Open de España will mark a turning point in the history of the tournament, one of the most prestigious in European Golf. Not only because of presence of the entire Spanish contingent, but also because of the fact that the new organisers have chosen the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid as the fixed venue for the next 5 years.

The Spanish Open has had plenty of issues in the last 40 years that have not exactly contributed to its stability. But that should all be history now and 2019 is the beginning of a new phase, and to kick it off, Madrid Trophy Promotion’s first decision was to establish a fixed venue. A fixed venue is essential for that, as all the great tournaments have one and they stick in the memories of the fans, like the Masters at Augusta, or the majors with their exclusive rotations. It is also the case of Wentworth at the PGA, the French Open, since setting itself up at the Le Golf National and the Tour Championship in Atlanta. Fans associate the course with the tournament and that is fundamental.

En el caso que nos afecta, además de ser un espectacular diseño de Javier Arana, el diseñador español por excelencia, hablamos de un campo muy cercano a la ciudad, al que se puede ir en transporte público y que cuenta con todo tipo de facilidades y actividades para los aficionados. El Open 2018 fue un éxito gracias, en parte, a que el Centro Nacional tenía esa accesibilidad para el público, pero creo que con el CCVM la situación incluso mejora.

In our case, as well as being a spectacular design by Javier Arana, the Spanish course designer par excellence, we are talking about a course that is very close to the city, can be reached by public transport and boasts numerous facilities and activities for the fans.

The 2018 Open de España was a success, thanks in part to the Centro Nacional being so accessible to the public, but I believe this aspect can be even better at the CCVM.

A Lee Westwood se le empañaron los ojos tímidamente. Durante un segundo de nuestra entrevista, quizás ni eso, el hombre que peleaba con Luke Donald por el número uno del mundo y que minutos antes había torcido el gesto por la enésima pregunta sobre la salud de Tiger Woods, se emocionó. Era el 18 de mayo de 2011, diez días después de la muerte de Severiano Ballesteros, y 'Westy' afrontaba aún apenado el Volvo World Match Play en Finca Cortesín (Málaga), quizás el Mundial más gris de la historia por la tristeza que impregnaba el ambiente. “Lo conocí en un Benson & Hedges. Estaba dando bolas y... Era maravilloso verlo”.

En la marca de tabaco Benson & Hedges —¡a quién se le ocurriría hoy día!— aún celebran haber patrocinado el Open de España entre 1980 y 1985. De aquellos seis torneos Severiano Ballesteros ganó dos encaramado a la cresta de la ola para prolongar su idilio con el abierto nacional, el torneo de su debut internacional, el torneo que supuso su última victoria profesional, el lugar donde dejó la última perla de su magia.

Lee Westwood’s eyes were welling up. For a second of our interview, maybe not even that, the man who was battling it out with Luke Donald to be the world number one and a few minutes before had frowned at the umpteenth question about Tiger Woods’ health, became emotional. It was the 18th of May 2011, ten days after the death of Severiano Ballesteros, and ‘Westy’, still grieving, was competing in the Volvo World Matchplay at Finca Cortesín (Malaga), perhaps the darkest edition of the competition due to the sadness that hung in the air. “I first met him at a Benson & Hedges. He was hitting balls and... It was incredible to watch”.

At the cigarette brand Benson & Hedges –who would even dream such a thing today?!- they still celebrate having sponsored the Open de España between 1980 and 1985. Of those six tournaments, Severiano Ballesteros won two, riding the crest of a wave to extend his love affair with his national open, the tournament where he would enjoy his final victory, the place where he left us with one last display of his magic.

DEBUT INTERNACIONAL 'Manitas de plata'. Así llamó Seve al sudaf ricano Gary Player. Primero en el verano de 1973, cuando lo conoció mientras ejercía de caddie en el pro-am donde el actor Sean Connery o el tenista Manolo Santana dieron por inaugurado el campo de La Manga Club en Murcia. Y un año después en lo que supondría su estreno en el Circuito Europeo en el Open de España disputado en aquel campo.

Corría 1974 y el cántabro no era más que un chaval de 17 años y 8 días -el debutante más joven de la historia del European Tour en aquel momento- que con dos vueltas de 83 y 75 se fue 15 golpes por encima del par y ni siquiera pasó el corte. A una distancia considerable de su admirado Gary Player (-3), a años luz de Jerry Heard, aquel estadounidense que justo un año después fue alcanzado por un rayo junto al mítico Lee Trevino en el Western Open y que se embolsó algo menos de 5.000 euros de hoy día por su victoria en La Manga con nueve bajo par.

INTERNATIONAL DEBUT ‘Manitas de plata’ or 'Silver hands’ was what Seve used to call South Af rican player Gary Player. First in the summer of 1973, when he met him while working as a caddie at the proam where the actor Sean Connery and tennis player Manolo Santana were inaugurating the La Manga Club in Murcia. And then one year later, during his European Tour debut at the Open de España, which was played on the same course.

It was 1974 and the Cantabria native was just a kid at 17 years and 8 days of age, the youngest rookie in the history of the European Tour at the time. With rounds of 83 and 75 he failed to make the cut at 15 over par. This was a considerable distance behind Gary Player (-3), the man he so much admired, and light years behind Jerry Heard, the American who, just a year earlier, was struck by lightning together with the legendary Lee Trevino at the Western Open and would now pocket the equivalent of just under 5,000 euros for his nine-under par victory at La Manga.

Pocos aquel día imaginarían que la leyenda del de Pedreña ya había comenzado y que el mundo le guardaba apodos mucho más jugosos que 'Manitas de plata'. Quizás sólo él lo sabía. Bueno, él y Manolo Piñero, el primer testigo del mundo profesional de la ambición del cántabro.

Apenas unos meses antes de su presentación en sociedad en La Manga, Seve afrontó su debut profesional en Sant Cugat durante un Campeonato de España cuando aún tenía 16 años. Terminó en 20ª posición y tras la última vuelta se quedó en el vestuario, mascullando, medio llorando y maldiciendo su suerte. Piñero se acercó a ver qué sucedía. “Había venido a jugar”, le dijo Seve. “No le había visto dar ni un golpe, pero cuando me contestó así supe que estaba ante un jugador que iba a dar mucho de qué hablar”, relató Piñero años más tarde. Y no se equivocó.

At the time, few could have imagined where the road that the legend f rom Pedreña had started out on would lead and that the world would bestow him with far more complimentary nicknames than ‘Silver hands’. Perhaps he was the only one who knew. Although Manolo Piñero, the f irst in the professional world to witness the Cantabria natives ambition, had a fair idea.

Just a few months before his baptism of f ire at La Manga, Seve played his professional debut at Sant Cugat in the Campeonato de España when he was just 16. He f inished 20th and after the f inal round he sat muttering to himself in the locker room, on the verge of tears and cursing his luck. Piñero approached him to see what the matter was. “I came to win”, Seve told him. “I had never seen him hit a single shot, but when he answered me like that, I knew that this was a player that would give us a lot to talk about”, remembered Piñero years later. He was not wrong.

ÚLTIMA VICTORIA PROFESIONAL Pasaron 21 años de aquel debut en La Manga hasta el que sería último triunfo de Seve. Fue en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid y, obviamente, se produjo durante el Open de España, aunque aquella victoria no sería ni mucho menor el bálsamo que necesitaba Ballesteros para enderezar su carrera cuando ‘sólo’ contaba 38 años en el DNI. Seve salió en el partido estelar de la última jornada junto al escocés Gordon Brand Jr. y aunque comenzó con tres bogeys seguidos, el cántabro se recompuso para sumar tres birdies en los últimos cinco hoyos e imponerse a Nacho Garrido y Pepín Rivero por dos golpes de ventaja. “El birdie del 14 me puso con los líderes y de repente parecía que tuviera alas”, bromeó al final de la jornada, aunque él ya sabía que no era así.

Aquel golpe desde el parking en el Abierto Británico de 1979, la madera tres desde el bunker en la Ryder Cup de 1983 o el que el Circuito Europeo califica como uno de los mejores de la historia del golf: aquel de 1993 en Crans-sur-Sierre, en Suiza.

Aquellos fueron sus grandes hits, los éxitos que le hicieron inmortal, los que movían masas y llenaban las calles de sus partidos de público. Como sucedió en 2005, diez años después de su última victoria. Obviamente en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. Igual que en aquel Trophée Lancôme de 1997 en SaintNom-La-Breteche, con un árbol por delante y un larguísimo tiro a green.

Seve llevaba casi dos años sin competir y ya enfilaba el final de su carrera. Volver al lugar donde tantas veces fue feliz era su forma de preparar el gran adiós en el Abierto Británico. Desde luego entre bogeys y ‘doblatas’ nadie se fue decepcionado. Fiel a su tradición, el drive de Seve, errático, se fue por la izquierda en la salida del 1, justo detrás de un pino, hundida y a más de 170 metros del trapo. Seve, sin embargo, no lo dudó: agarró el hierro seis, se arrodilló ante la bola y comenzó a hacer swings de práctica. Aquel día, su caddie era el argentino Cristian Iglesias, quien recordó en Golfclick como el cántabro le dijo “¿Ves el árbol que molesta?

Pues ya no va a molestar más”. Él mismo se fue hasta la bolsa, cambió el hierro por una madera cinco y recuperó su posición arrodillado.

Los libros de historia y los anales del golf no concederán ninguna posición de honor para un golpe que apenas vieron unos cientos de aficionados, pero lo cierto es que aquella madera imposible fue su firma única y personalísima a un torneo y a un campo que nunca hubieran sido lo que son hoy sin él. Igual que todo el golf en España.

Those gathered around the 10th tee of the same black course that will host the 2019 Open de España this October, were just hoping to witness a flash of genius, to be able to boast at having seen the great Severiano Ballesteros play the game.

Those were his greatest hits, the success stories that earned him immortality, moved the masses and packed the fairways with fans every time he played.

And he would do it again in 2005, ten years after his f inal victory, once again at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. Just like at that 1997 Trophée Lancôme in Saint-Nom-La-Breteche, with a tree in f ront of him and huge distance left to the green.

Of course, in between the bogeys and doubles, nobody was disappointed. As ever, Seve’s driving was erratic, he went left f rom the f irst tee and found his ball behind a pine tree, sitting down and more than 190 yards f rom the hole. Seve, however, did not hesitate: his took his six iron, knelt before the ball and started to make practice swings. His caddie that day was the Argentinian Cristian Iglesias, who remembered on Golfclick how the Cantabrian told him “See that tree in the way? It’s not going to be in the way now”. He then went to the bag himself and swapped the iron for a f ive wood and got back down on his knees.

It had been almost two years since Seve had last competed and his career was coming to an end.

Playing again where he so often found happiness was his way of preparing for his big goodbye at The Open. Nobody was expecting victory and neither were they surprised at his 77 in the f irst round or his third-f rom-last f inish, with just, coincidentally,

The history books and the annals of golf will have no place for a shot that only a few hundred fans were lucky enough to witness, but the fact is that impossible fairway wood was his unique and personal gift to a tournament and a course that never would have been what they are today without him.

For that matter, nor would Spanish golf itself.

ra viernes. 14 de octubre de 2005. Nunca olvidaré esa fecha. Fue un día grande para mí. Yo no soy de los que ha tenido la fortuna de mamar el golf desde crío. Era un deporte que no se estilaba en mi casa. Se veían las hazañas, los Masters de Olazábal, por supuesto, pero ni se practicaba, ni se veía en la tele más allá de la Ryder Cup. La de Valderrama, por ejemplo, pasó por mi vida de soslayo, lo que caía en algún Telediario y poco más.

Aquel 14 de octubre de hace catorce años vi por primera vez en directo a Seve Ballesteros.

Aún no jugaba al golf, pero ya lo seguía semana a semana. Mi querido amigo David Durán se había encargado de meterme el vicio en vena. Aquel viernes, segunda jornada del Open de Madrid, me caí definitivamente del caballo y se iniciaba una relación que ha terminado convirtiendo al golf en mi vida.

No sólo era la primera vez que veía en directo a Seve, también fue mi estreno en un torneo profesional y, aunque me puede bailar este recuerdo, posiblemente también fue mi bautizo de fuego en un campo de golf. Yo venía del fútbol y del baloncesto, los deportes de

los que habitualmente escribía cuando estaba en Marca, antes de iniciar mi aventura en Ten Golf, y lo que vi me impresionó.

Acostumbrado a los recintos acotados, aquello me pareció inabarcable. Me preguntaba, como periodista, lo difícil que debía ser, si no imposible, informar de un torneo de golf en el campo. No hay manera de verlos a todos ni de saber qué está pasando. Lo mismo estás siguiendo un partido y lo más importante está ocurriendo a varios kilómetros de distancia.

Profesionalmente, qué cosas, me pareció una odisea. Claro que entonces no conocía las carpas de los torneos llamadas ‘Media Centre’ y el incansable trabajo que realizan los equipos de prensa (ay, la gran María Acacia López Bachiller) para facilitar las cosas a los intrépidos y, en ocasiones, muy perdidos escribanos.

Lo siguiente que me impresionó fue Severiano. Habíamos ido al torneo sólo y exclusivamente ese día para ver al genio cántabro los 18 hoyos. Cómo no. Yo lo estaba descubriendo, como un paleto, rodeado de aficionados que me daban mil vueltas en conocimiento y pasión. Más allá de su juego, que por aquel en-

tonces no estaba precisamente en plenitud, ni yo tenía los conocimientos mínimos para enjuiciarlo, me asombró su personalidad, su manera de andar por el campo y, sobre todo, el modo con el que los aficionados que lo seguían más allá de las cuerdas lo miraban. Era interés y admiración, pero también mucho más que eso. Lo que desprendían era devoción.

Como si fuera una aparición divina. Es la misma sensación que tuve un año después cuando vi por primera vez en directo a Tiger Woods en la Ryder Cup del K Club de Dublín. Parecía que el tiempo se detenía…

Todo aquello sucedió en el Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, el mismo escenario donde se juega este renovado y revitalizado Mutuactivos Open de España.

Por desgracia, ya no tenemos con nosotros al gran Seve, pero si por un casual es la primera vez que viene a ver un torneo de golf, le recomiendo que siga 18 hoyos a Jon Rahm. Si se fijan en los ojos de los aficionados verán una devoción muy parecida y, entonces, le embargará la sensación de que el tiempo, otra vez, se ha detenido.

I

t was Friday the 14th of October 2005. I will never forget that date. It was a huge day for me. I’m not one of those lucky enough to have been brought up on golf from a young age. It was not a sport that was played in my home. We would see the great victories, like Olazábal’s Masters wins, of course, but we didn’t play, it wasn’t on the TV apart from the Ryder Cup. I was barely aware of the one at Valderrama, for example, I just saw it mentioned on the news, little more.

On that 14 October, fourteen years ago, I saw Seve Ballesteros for the first time in the flesh. He wasn’t playing his best golf anymore, but I followed him week after week. My dear friend David Durán was responsible for my addiction. That Friday, the second day of the Open de Madrid, I finally opened my eyes and a relationship began that eventually made golf my life.

It was not only the first time I saw Seve live, it was also my first time at a professional tournament and, if memory serves, it was also my first time on a golf course. I came from a background of football and basketball, the sports I normally wrote about when I was at

Marca, before starting out on my venture with Ten Golf, and I was amazed by what I saw.

Accustomed to enclosed venues, it seemed unsurmountable to me. I thought to myself, as a journalist, how difficult it must be, if not impossible, to report on a golf tournament from the course. There is no way of seeing everyone, or of knowing what is going on. Maybe you are following one match and the most important one is taking place a few kilometres away. From a professional point of view, these things seemed indomitable. Of course, then I discovered the so-called ‘Media Centre’ tents and the tireless work carried out by the press teams (ahh, the great María Acacia López Bachiller) to facilitate the work of the intrepid and occasionally clueless scribes.

The next thing to amaze me was Severiano. We’d gone to the tournament solely that day to see follow the genius from Cantabria for 18 holes. Of course. I was just finding out about him, like an ignoramus, surrounded by fans whose knowledge and passion were light years ahead of mine. Apart from his game, which at this point was

not exactly at its peak, and which I was not knowledgeable enough to judge, I was stunned by his personality, the way he walked around the course and, above all, the way the fans following him from outside the ropes gazed at him. It was interest and admiration, but also, much more than that. What I saw in them was devotion. As if he were a divine apparition. It’s the same feeling I had a year later when I saw Tiger Woods live for the first time, at the Ryder Cup at the K Club in Dublin. It felt like time was standing still...

All of this took place at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, the same stage where the revamped and rejuvenated Mutuactivos Open de España is being held. Sadly, our great Seve is no longer with us, but if a casual spectator is at a golf tournament for the first time, I would recommend they follow Jon Rahm for 18 holes. With a look at the fans’ eyes they will see a very similar devotion and, then, they will be overcome by the feeling that time, again, is standing still.

Por señalar los datos más relevantes de ese estudio independiente, el golf en nuestra comunidad da sustento a más de 1.800 familias, y a más de 300 fuera de los límites de la Comunidad de Madrid; suponen 235 millones de euros del PIB, a los que sumar los más de 36 millones de euros en bienes y servicios, o los más de 10 millones de euros de inversión que se realizaron la temporada pasada, y eso sin que el Open de España entrara en el cómputo de sus activos.

To highlight some of the most relevant figures f rom that independent study; golf in our community supports more than 1,800 families and more than 300 outside the limits of the Community of Madrid; it adds 235 million euros to the GDP, on top of 36 million euros in goods and services, and more than 10 million euros in investments that were made last season, all before the Open de España entering into the calculation of assets.

Además, del millón de vueltas que se disputaron en los campos madrileños el año pasado, un diez por ciento correspondieron a jugadores venidos del extranjero y del resto de comunidades del país, con lo que el potencial de poder incrementar el valor turístico de las instalaciones de golf y demás servicios que of rece Madrid es importantísimo -a lo que, sin duda, un torneo de estas características, con algunos de los mejores jugadores del mundo, la ventana al mundo que supone, ayudará notablemente a dinamizar esas cifras-.

Más información: Los campos de golf de la Comunidad de Madrid consumen el 1,4 por ciento del total de recursos hídricos, usando aguas no potables para el riego, siendo del mayor cliente de agua regenerada del Canal, además de, comparado con el sector agrícola, ocupar sólo el 0,007 de la superficie agraria al tiempo que genera 3,4 veces más ingresos y 53 veces más empleo.

Suponen, además, un pulmón capaz de absorber CO2 equivalente a 15 parques de El Retiro, refugio de flora y fauna y, cuando es necesario, sus lagos y balsas son de capital ayuda en la extinción de incendios.

In addition, of the one million rounds that were played on Madrid courses last year, ten percent of them corresponded to players f rom overseas and the rest f rom national communities, meaning that the potential to increase the tourist value of the golf facilities and other services offered by Madrid is huge –to which, without a doubt, a tournament of this type, with some of the best players in the world and the global showcase that it is, will help significantly to boost these figures-.

Further information: The golf courses in the Community of Madrid consume 1.4 percent of the total water resources, using non-potable water for irrigation, it is the biggest client of Canal’s reclaimed water, as well as, compared to the agriculture sector, occupying just 0.007 percent of the agricultural land while generating 3.4 times the income and 53 times more employment.

They are also lungs capable of absorbing the same amount of CO2 as Madrid’s El Retiro Park 15 times over, a refuge for flora and fauna and, whenever necessary, their lakes and ponds are a significant help in putting out fires.

Pero no puedo parar aquí, en un par de semanas se celebrará en el Centro Nacional el Abierto de Madrid de Golf Adaptado, con más de cien inscritos, el mayor torneo de Europa. Un modelo de integración y superación que supone un orgullo para el golf madrileño.

But I cannot stop quite yet; in a couple of weeks, the Centro Nacional will host the Madrid Open for Adaptive Golf, with more than one hundred entrants, the biggest tournament in Europe. It is a model of integration and achievement that is a great source of pride for Madrid golf.

El golf es, además, uno de los deportes más solidarios. Sólo en lo que va de año, se han celebrado más de 150 pruebas en los campos de nuestra comunidad en los que los ingresos van destinados a cusas sociales y recursos a la investigación de enfermedades e integración y ayuda a personas con necesidades. Un deporte solidario como pocos.

As a sport, golf does a huge amount for charity. So far this year, more than 150 events have been held on the courses in our community whose proceeds went towards social causes, resources for research against diseases and integration and support for people with special needs. It does for charity what few other sports do.

Pero también un deporte familiar y social del que sus practicantes son los mejores prescriptores y beneficiarios. Si usted es golfista, enhorabuena, puede decir bien alto: ¡Yo soy golfista!

But it is also a family and social sport and those who play it are its best influencers and benefactors. If you are a golfer, congratulations, you can say loud and proud: “I am a golfer!”.

Y si conoce a alguien que no lo practica, muéstrele el camino, en breve se lo agradecerá.

TRES NIÑOS PRODIGIO SE CUELAN EN UNA FIESTA DE MAYORES

lejandro Del Rey, Víctor Pastor y Koen Kouwenaar son los tres jugadores amateurs que han recibido una invitación para participar en este Mutuactivos Open de España 2019.

Han hecho méritos de sobra para tener la oportunidad de disfrutar de un torneo profesional de primer nivel mundial, aunque no será el primero para los españoles, pues ya saben lo que es debutar en el European Tour siendo amateurs.

Tanto Alejandro Del Rey como Víctor Pastor tienen cada vez más cerca el final de su exitosa etapa amateur, pues ambos están en los últimos años de sus carreras universitarias, por lo que la Real Federación Española de Golf ha decidido premiarles con esta oportunidad, sabedores de que hay otros muchos jugadores que podrían disfrutar de este premio, pero que lo harán en próximos años.

Precisamente, tanto Víctor Pastor como Alejandro Del Rey pudieron disputar el Open de España 2018 que se disputó en el Centro Nacional de Golf, aunque corrieron diferente suerte, pues Del Rey no pudo superar el corte, mientras que el malagueño Pastor consiguió deslumbrar a todo el mundo con un soberbio 12º puesto.

Sin duda, fue la semana de Jon Rahm, pero si alguien consiguió robarle algo de protagonismo fue, precisamente, Víctor Pastor, que llegó incluso a liderar el torneo el primer día junto al jugador vasco. “Fue una experiencia muy positiva de la que aprendí mucho, ya no sólo de los días en los que jugué bien, sobre todo aprendí de los días en los que jugué de forma regular, pero luché para sacar adelante el resultado,” afirmaba Pastor sobre su primera incursión entre profesionales.

3 YOUNG GUNS ARE CRASHINGTHE BIG BOYS’ PARTY

They have done more than enough to earn the opportunity to experience a first-class professional tournament, although it will not be the first for the Spaniards, who have already competed on the European Tour as amateurs.

Alejandro Del Rey and Victor Pastor are drawing near to the end of their successful amateur careers, as they are both in the final years of their university studies, which is why the Spanish Golf Federation has decided to reward them with this opportunity, in the knowledge that there are many other players who would be able to enjoy an invitation, but who will do so in years to come. tor Pastor and Alejandro Del Rey both competed in the 2018 Open de España at the Centro Nacional de Golf, although they enjoyed mixed fortunes with Del Rey missing the cut and the Malaga native Pastor surprising everyone with an astonishing 12th place finish.

Without a doubt, the week belonged to Jon Rahm, but if anyone managed to steal a little of his limelight it was certainly Victor Pastor, who even led the tournament on the first day alongside the Basque player. “It was a very positive experience and I learnt a lot from it, not just from the days when I played well, above all I learnt from the days when I played average, but I battled to get a result”, said Pastor regarding his first outing among the pros.

Por su parte, el madrileño Alejandro Del Rey es el veterano de los tres en estas lides, pues con esta presencia en el Mutuactivos Open de España firmará su particular hat-trick en el European Tour, ya que participó en la edición del año pasado y en el Valderrama Masters de este 2019. El Campeón del Mundo Amateur en 2018 buscará pasar su primer corte en un torneo profesional, ya que no tuvo sus mejores semanas de juego en las dos participaciones anteriores. “Estoy muy contento con volver a jugar el Mutuactivos Open de España, me hace mucha ilusión jugar otro torneo del tour en mi país, tengo ganas de hacerlo bien y demostrarme a mí mismo que lo puedo hacer bien en un campo difícil contra los mejores. Le tengo que dar las gracias a la RFEG por la invitación, porque sé que no es fácil repartir invitaciones a amateurs, pero quiero que sepan la ilusión que nos hace jugar este tipo de semanas a los amateurs y lo mucho que nos ayudan a la hora de prepararnos para

ser profesionales. Es una semana de aprendizaje para compararte con los mejores y ver en qué aspectos tenemos que mejorar. No puedo describir las ganas que tengo de que llegue esa semana,” aseguró el joven madrileño, que estudia en la misma universidad que lo hiciera Jon Rahm, Arizona State.

For his part, Madrid native Alejandro Del Rey is the more experienced of the three in these surroundings, as his appearance at the Mutuactivos Open de España will be his third on the European Tour, having played last year’s competition as well as the Valderrama Masters earlier this year.

The 2018 Amateur World Champion will be bidding to make his first professional cut, as he did not have his best weeks on the course in previous participations. “I’m very happy to be playing in the Mutuactivos Open de España again, I’m really excited to play another tournament in my country, I really want to play well and show myself that I can do well on a difficult course against the best. I’d like to thank the RFEG for the invitation, because I know it’s not easy to give out invitations to amateurs, but I want them to know how exciting it is for us amateurs to play in weeks like this and how much it helps us when it comes to preparing to be

professionals. It’s a week of learning where you can compare yourself with the best and see where you have to improve. I can’t describe how excited I am for that week to arrive”, said the young player from Madrid, who studies at the same university as Jon Rahm did, Arizona State.

Y, por último, el holandés Koen Kouwenaar jugarásu segundo torneo del European Tour tras haber debutado hace unos días en el KLM Open de su país, y lo hará gracias a haberse ganado el derecho con su triunfo en la pasada Copa de S.M. El Rey, disputada el pasado marzo en Las Colinas Golf & Country Club (Orihuela Costa, Alicante). Este Campeonato Internacional de España Amateur Masculino es uno de los torneos más prestigiosos del calendario amateur europeo, como demuestra su espectacular palmarés, que cuenta con nombres como José María Olazábal, Darren Clarke, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño o Sergio García.

And, finally, the Dutch Koen Kouwenaar will be making his debut in a professional European Tour tournament having won the right to do so with his victory at the last Copa de S.M. El Rey, held last March at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club (Orihuela Costa, Alicante). This Men’s Amateur International Championship of Spain is one of the most prestigious on the European amateur calendar, as demonstrated by its stellar list of winners, which includes names such as José María Olazábal, Darren Clarke, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and Sergio García.
